Reynolds, Yvonne Margaret. "Measurement and measurement-related competences of five to eight-year-old children in a British primary school." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10020634/.

Full text
Abstract:
Measuring with units requires underlying conceptual competences as well as practical and numerical abilities. The social context, notably in relation to language, undoubtedly plays its part in their acquisition. Existing research had investigated conceptual, practical, numerical and social aspects of the acquisition of measurement, but rarely together, or by the same group of children. The present research united both in a conceptually coherent structure, enabling a picture to be presented that was both broad and detailed. There was a specific focus on conceptual difficulties children may face that are identified in the psychological and educational literature. Eighty-three five- to eight-year-old children were interviewed about their knowledge of measurement and participated in a comprehensive set of tasks designed to test their understanding of its language and concepts, their accuracy in making visual estimates, and their ability to measure length. Results showed the children to have a lively appreciation of the importance of measurement, good understanding of its everyday language and concepts, and good ability to estimate length. Yet they were poor measurers. This unevenness in their accomplishments indicated underlying conceptual insecurity that was manifested in ineffective deployment of measurement instruments, but went beyond it. There was some evidence that ability in language and estimation were associated for the younger children, while estimation and measurement ability were associated for the older. An agenda for further investigation of the disjunctions identified by this research was outlined.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge about how teachers use Favorite Mathematics in teaching to promote students' knowledge of the five abilities. The purpose was also to get an idea of how the teacher relates to the teaching if the teaching aid is not enough. We chose to conduct qualitative interviews via zoom with F-3 teachers. The sample consists of six experienced teachers who have worked with mathematic teaching in primary school for at least 4 years. In our result, it appears that the teachers use the teaching aid to a large extent, but that they need to supplement this with exercises and extra material.

Abstract:
Prehension is a fundamental skill usually performed as part of a complex action sequence in everyday tasks. Using an information processing framework, these studies examined the effects of task complexity, defined by the number of component movement elements (MEs), on performance of prehension tasks. Of interest was how motor control and organisation might be influenced by age and/or motor competence. Three studies and two longitudinal case studies examined kinematic characteristics of prehension tasks involving one-, two- and three-MEs: reach and grasp (low-complexity); reach, grasp and object placement (moderate-complexity); and reach, grasp and double placement of object (high-complexity). A pilot study established the suitability of tasks and procedures for children aged 5-, 8- and 11-years and showed that responses to task complexity and object size manipulations were sensitive to developmental changes, with increasing age associated with faster movements. Study 2 explored complexity and age effects further for children aged 6- and 11-years and adults. Increasing age was associated with shorter and less variable movement times (MTs) and proportional deceleration phases (%DTs) across all MEs. Task complexity had no effect on simple reaction time (SRT), suggesting that there may be little preprogramming of movements beyond the first ME. In addition, MT was longer and more on-line corrections were evident for the high- compared to the moderate-complexity task for ME1. Task complexity had a greater influence on movements in ME2 and ME3 than ME1. Adults, but not children, showed task specific adaptations in ME2. Study 3 examined performance of children with different levels of motor competence aged between 5- and 10-years. Increasing age was associated with shorter SRTs, and MTs for ME1 only. A decrease in motor competence was associated with greater difficulty in planning and controlling movements as indicated by longer SRTs, higher %DTs and more on-line corrections, especially in ME2. Task complexity affected movements in all MEs, with a greater influence on ME1 compared to Study 2. Findings also indicated that performance in MEs following prehension may be especially sensitive to motor competence effects on movement characteristics. Case studies for two children at risk of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) revealed two different patterns of performance change over a 16-17 month period, highlighting the heterogeneous nature of DCD. Overall, findings highlighted age-related differences, and the role of motor competence, in the ability to adapt movements to task specific requirements. Results are useful in guiding movement education programmes for children with both age-appropriate and lower levels of motor competence.

Andersson, Sarah, and Mathilda Brandin. "”It’s not a term that I’ve ever used” - Teachers’ Interpretations of Interculturality in EFL-teaching."

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this degree project was to investigate teachers’ conscious and unconscious interpretations of interculturality. We interviewed five teachers from different schools in order to analyse how intercultural their teaching of culture in EFL is. We investigated how their schools encourage cultural diversity, whether intercultural aspects are incorporated in their EFL-teaching and how they interpret the term interculturality. The Swedish national curriculum (Skolverket 2011a), Byram’s (1997) five savoirs and Sercu’s (2006) IC-teacher profile provided us with the theoretical background for the analysis. Our findings suggest that there are teachers who do not incorporate intercultural aspects into their EFL-teaching, as well as teachers who include some aspects. Among our five teachers there is an uncertainty concerning interculturality and how it should be a part of their teaching. Our conclusion is that since it is no longer optional in Swedish schools to incorporate interculturality into EFL-teaching, it is necessary to raise an awareness of the term among principals, teachers and teacher students.

Wilson, Ella. "Flow and Performance Competency in Modern and Ballet Dancers." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2016. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/725.

Full text
Abstract:
A qualitative investigation is proposed to examine flow experiences in professional ballet modern dancers in order understand the nature of this psychological experience. It is not well understood where and when professional dancers experience flow, and whether or not their subjective experience is correlated to what an audience evaluates in a dancer’s performance. The study of performance quality and subjective experience of the dancer has not been studied within the dance movement analysis literature. This is an important topic to research to further understand what factors facilitate or debilitate a professional dancer’s well-being. This study aims to determine any facilitating and mediating factors of flow experiences in professional ballet and modern dancers. Additionally, it aims to address whether a dancer’s performance is perceived as being competent, and if the dancer’s experiences of the performance matches the levels of competency. Two hundred professional ballet and modern dancers (100M, 100F) will participate in this study. These participants will be recruited from the professional companies based in the United States. This study will also analyze the relationship that the reported flow scores have with evaluations of performance competency. Each participant will be interviewed to determine their personal experiences of flow, if they have had any. Following the interview, they will complete the Activity Experience Scale – 2 (DFS-2). A researcher will observe a rehearsal and a performance to evaluate each participant using the Performance Competency Evaluation Measure. Following the rehearsal or performance, the participant will complete the Event Experience Scale-2 (FSS-2). The mean scores from the FSS-2 will be analyzed using a two-by-two factorial ANOVA to determine if modern dancers experience significantly higher levels of flow in performance with no effect across gender. The effects of performance competency evaluations between the style of dance and mean flow scores were examined using mediation analysis and Sobel’s test. Additionally, it is predicted that the number of hours of rehearsal and performances will be established as a mediating factor between the style of dance and mean flow scores. The same methodology will be used for mediation analysis to test this hypothesis.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to describe how teachers in primary class up to grade 3 works with the five competencies that the curricula in mathematics are based on, to support pupils' learning. The study was conducted with individual qualitative semi-structured interviews with six primary school teachers. The collected data has been transcribed and sorted into five categories linked to the research questions. The data were then analyzed from the theoretical perspective of the study, which is the didactic contract and beliefs. The result shows that teachers have different views and show uncertainty about the five competencies in the mathematics curricula. Textbooks dominate teachers' planning and teaching in mathematics. Furthermore, it was found that the assessment is mostly summative, based on completed diagnoses where the teachers don’t always consider all five competencies. The conclusion of this study is that teachers have good knowledge and perceptions of what mathematics is and how students learn mathematics, but despite this, teachers find it difficult to convert it into mathematics education to support all pupils' learning.

Henry, Richard S. "“Even Five Years Ago this Would Have Been Impossible:” Health Care Providers’ Perspectives on Trans* Health Care." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6094.

Full text
Abstract:
Trans* studies and issues have recently increased in coverage by the media and popular press. With recent changes in the DSM-5 (APA, 2000; APA 2013) and insurance law (HHS, 2014), trans* healthcare has been under increasing scrutiny. While a small number of studies (Bradford, Reisener, Honnold, & Xavier, 2013; Grant et al., 2011; Rounds, McGrath, & Walsh, 2013; Tanner et al., 2014) have documented discrimination and lack of cultural competencies from the perspective of trans* patients, little research exists that examines the training, support, and decision-making processes of medical professionals who treat trans* patients (Snelgrove et al., 2012, p. 2). The goal of this research study is to explore the training and cultural competencies of healthcare professionals in treating trans* patients by surveying and interviewing healthcare professionals about their experiences of trainings, familiarity with practices/protocols, and attitudes toward treating trans* patients. A survey of 35 health care professionals and nine interviews were conducted. These health care professionals, while generally accepting of trans* individuals, still had some reservations about working with trans* patients and suggested that there were many barriers and challenges to providing trans* health care. A majority of health care professionals had little or no familiarity with treatment protocols or diagnoses for trans* patients, and very few had received any type of training (formal or informal) before or after starting working in the health care about trans* patients. While there are many areas in which there perceived challenges and barriers to care, several participants did observe that there has been a shift in health care recently that is moving towards being more inclusive and responsive to trans* patients.

The following research presents an exploration on the role that competency assessments and competency reports play in child sexual abuse cases. This research is informed by forensic social workers in practice within the Gauteng Province. The respondents work both within government organisations and non-government organisations. This research uses a mixed methodology approach to explore practices around competency assessments and competency reports. The respondents completed two forms of data collection namely a survey and were part of a focus group which was conducted by the researcher. The findings therefore presents both quantitative and qualitative data, and are discussed to further elaborate on practices within the Gauteng Province. Conclusions and recommendations were made by both the researcher and the respondents, which are supported by the findings of this research and existing literature in the field.

Introduction -- Conceptual frameworks: language competence and the acquisition of modality -- Generic frameworks: speech, writing and electronic communication -- Linguistic frameworks: modality and related concepts -- Research design and methodologies -- FTDs in the ACAD and BB corpora -- Learner's use of FTDs in discoursal context and their individual repertoires -- Conclusions and implications.
While natural interaction is one of the important components that lead to successful language learning (Vygotsky 1978, 1986), communication in classroom practice in Thailand is mostly teacher-centered and not genuinely interactive. Online group communication is different because it allows learners to exercise interpersonal communicative skills through interaction and meaning negotiation, as in reciprocal speech situations. At the same time it gives learners time to think and produce language without having to face the kind of pressure they feel in face-to-face classroom discussion. The language learner's competence is thus likely to be enhanced by opportunities to communicate online, and to be more visible there than in academic contexts, although there is a dearth of experimental research to show this. One way of investigating the pedagogical potential of bulletin board discussions is to focus on the interpersonal linguistic devices used in textual interactions (Biber 1988). -- The purpose of this research is to find out whether students communicating online in bulletin board writing will exercise their repertoires of linguistic fine-tuning devices (hedges, modals, and intensifiers) more extensively than when writing academic essays. This was expected because hedges, modals and intensifiers are likely to be found in interactive discussions (Holmes 1983), while academic tasks do not create such an environment. Though hedges and modal devices are also found in academic genres (Salager-Meyer 1994, Hyland 1998), those used tend to be academic in function rather than communicative. -- In order to compare the frequency and variety of the fine-tuning devices used by learners in the two mediums, data was gathered from 39 Thai students of English at Kasetsart University, from (1) their discussions in online bulletin boards and (2) their academic essays. Tasks were assigned on parallel topics in three text types (narrative, explanatory, argumentative) for both mediums. The amount of writing was normalized to create comparable text lengths. Measures used in the quantitative analysis included tallying of the types and tokens of the experimental linguistic items, with the help of the AntConc 2007 computer concordancer. Samples of written texts from the two mediums were also analyzed qualitatively and compared in terms of their discourse structure (stages, moves and speech acts), to see which functional segments support or prompt particular types of pragmatic devices. -- The findings confirm that in electronic bulletin boards the students exercise their repertoires of fine-tuning devices more frequently, and use a greater variety of pragmatic functions than in academic essays. This is probably because online discussion fosters interactions that are more typical of speech (Crystal 2006), and its structure allows for a series of interpersonal moves which have no place in academic tasks. Text-type also emerged as a significant factor: writing argumentative texts prompted greater use of modals and intensifiers than the narrative and explanatory ones. Thus students' communicative competence showed itself most fully in the argumentative online assignments, and was not so evident in academic and expository essays. Frequent use of modal and intensifying elements was also found to correlate with the students' English proficiency grades, and how regularly they wrote online. This incidentally shows the importance of exposure to L2 in language acquisition, and that lower-proficiency learners need more opportunities to exercise their L2 resources in interactive discourse, in order to develop competence in using them. -- These research findings support Long's (1996) 'Interaction Hypothesis', that learners learn best in situations that cater for interaction; and Swain's (1985) 'Output Hypothesis', that learners need the chance to exercise their language naturally in a variety of contexts -through academic tasks as well as social interactions, which are equally important for language education. Extended performance opportunities undoubtedly feed back into the learner's communicative competence.

Atwater, Paul A. "Force Protection for Fire Fighters : Warm Zone Operations at Paramilitary Style Active Shooter Incidents in a Multi-Hazard Environment as a Fire Service Core Competency." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/6764.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
Paramilitary-style active shooter attacks in a multi-hazard environment are an emerging threat against the U.S. homeland. Lessons learned from previous paramilitary style attacks demonstrate the breaking points of the fire service policy of standing by until law enforcement declares that the scene is secure. When followed, the standby policy prevents fire fighters from taking calculated risks to accomplish the fire service mission of saving lives and protecting property. It is likely that the standby policy will be ignored when immediate action is required to save lives or mitigate hazards in areas of the incident in which the potential for violence, but no active threat exists. The optimal fire service response policy to save lives and mitigate hazards during paramilitary style attacks in a multi-hazard environment is a force protection model in which law enforcement officers accompany and protect fire fighters in the warm zone. This model is an adaptation of the successful escort model used by law enforcement and fire fighters during civil unrest incidents. As has occurred many times in the past, the fire service must incorporate a new core mission competencywarm zone operations at paramilitary style attacks.

Abstract:
According to attachment theory, the establishment of an attachment bond to a caregiver not only provides the infant with protection from danger, but also many other resources presumably beneficial to the child’s general psychological development. Although there is substantial empirical support for a link between attachment security and social functioning in childhood and adolescence, less is known about whether childhood attachment contributes to social functioning beyond adolescence. Similarly, attachment has been found predictive of broad aspects of a person’s functioning, but few attempts have been made to link attachment to the currently dominating perspective on personality, the Five Factor Model (FFM). Results in Study I partially supported our expectations, by showing prospective links from middle childhood security to various aspects of social functioning in young adulthood. Further, security contributed to developmental change in social functioning from middle childhood to young adulthood. In Study II, middle childhood security was found to predict some of the FFM personality traits (primarily extraversion and openness) concurrently and prospectively, partially supporting our expectations. The third aim of this thesis was to address whether attachment disorganization, which has usually been found predictive of maladaptive phenomena, may predict also other, non-pathological outcomes. In Study II, we found that higher levels of disorganization in young adulthood were concurrently associated with more openness and lower conscientiousness. Furthermore, in Study III disorganization was shown to be concurrently associated with more New Age spirituality and more absorption in adulthood. In addition, absorption was, in accordance with our expectations, found to statistically mediate the link between disorganization and New Age spirituality. Hence, these findings supported our assumption that disorganization might be expressed in other life domains besides specifically maladaptive ones. Taken together, we suggest that attachment spreads its influence to a broad set of life domains through its continuous influence on general psychological components such as cognitive representations and self-regulation abilities. However, the modest strength of our results indicates that attachment is only one among several factors involved in the development of social functioning, personality traits, and spirituality.

Abstract:
Altered flow regimes following river regulation can result in significant changes in river bed geomorphology and subsequent negative ecological impacts caused by re-suspended sediments deposited on the riverbed. This study aimed to evaluate the consequences of implementing an ecological flow regime on sediments accumulated within the regulated river Juktån. Sediments were sampled and analysed for particle size distribution to estimate sediment stability. Flow alteration following the ecological flow regime was analysed with HEC-RAS unsteady flow simulation serving as a basis for calculations of forces acting to erode or retain deposited sediments. Additional analyses regarding critical flow were made with HEC-RAS steady flow simulation. Results show that 4 out of 15 cross-sections analysed would have the potential to erode and re-suspend sediments. The estimated average critical flow for when sediments become unstable with potential to re-suspend is 17 m3/s. The total sediment inventory of the studied reach is ~25000 ton, with ~3000-ton sediments potentially eroding into re-suspension. This is approximately 3% of river Umeälvens annual 100 000 ton suspended sediments before being regulated. Results indicate that river bed heterogeneity in river Juktån could benefit from implementing the ecological flow regime while not mobilizing such amounts of fine sediments that would cause clogging effects downstream the site of interest. The study also introduces the erosion rate equation which compares the annual erosion between two different flow regimes.

Abstract:
The present dissertation, carried out within the scope of the Master in Education and Society, accompanied the implementation of a pilot educational project at the Pedro Arrupe College in Lisbon in the academic year 2017/2018. We wanted to see if the project objectives were achieved according to the perspectives of its most direct educational agents, students and teachers. Has the student been transferred to the role of the class in a more active, participatory, critical and responsible role? Have they been able to develop the collaborative work through the various projects developed during the school year or did they show any difficulties? Have the new technologies been useful tools in the proper functioning of the classes or is the use of school textbooks still considered essential? On the other hand, the relation between several disciplines will be a point to take into account for the construction of knowledge? We present a brief history of the college and the pedagogical line followed, as well as the Nine To Five project. As a way of answering the questions raised, we conducted a survey of students and interviews with teachers. Data were analyzed using the methodology presented, but also the information collected through observation. The results reflect the success of the project, but lead to the need for other studies due to some instabilities in the course of the present study.

The main purpose of this study was to explore the gender differences in five-subject basic competence test for junior high school students and the influential mechanism. In order to reach the purpose, I used the data of Taitung Educational Panel Survey and compared with the ninth graders’ Basic Competence Test, including Chinese, English, Math, Science, and Society. After controlling background variables, I used regression analysis to analyze the influence of gender on total scores of basic competence test for junior high school students and individual subject scores through cultural capital, social capital, and financial capital. I found that girls’ average total scores were higher ten scores than boys’. Girls’ average English scores were higher six point five six scores, and average Chinese scores were higher three point two four scores than boys’, which resulted from the gender differences on Basic Competence Test for Junior High School Students. There was not any difference on math, science, and society. However, after controlling three capitals, there was not significant gender difference on Chinese, but girls’ English scores were higher three points zero six scores than boys’, and boy’s scores were significant superior to girls’ on math, science, and society. Regarding the indirect influence of scores through three capitals, girls were superior to boys. Girls were less engaged in some culture habitus, such as dancing Hip-Hop, visiting temple fair, eight household generals, and computing. Moreover, girls had higher parents’ expectations than boys, and owned more reference books so as to increase the total scores of the Basic Competence Test. Furthermore, these variables have similar influence on each subject.

Taiwan public fine Arts museums have always been regarded as “temples of Taiwanese arts”, but Taiwan public fine Arts museums directors are usually dereliction of duty. In the other hand, enterprises take competencies as key factors in competitive advantage. In consideration of the trend in “New Public Management”, there is no government around the world that hadn’t emulated the spirit of business management to improve their service efficiency. Taiwan Directorate-General of Personnel began to establish core competencies which are involved management and professional competencies for middle and senior supervisors at 2004.The director of Taiwan public fine arts museums is a vital role to direct their staff members to reserve, exhibit, educate and collect through art objects; His / her professional competencies must be highly relevant to the developments and functions in fine arts museums. However, there is still not any indicator about them. In the past, the discussions of Taiwan public fine arts museums directors were concerned about political and administrative. There is no research about the change of public fine arts museums directors’ role in new trend, exploring their professional competencies. This research is consists of the two parts. The Part 1 is due to establish a hypothesis for “the required professional competencies of public fine arts museums director. By analyzing different kinds of documents about “fine arts museums management”, comparing with the public fine arts museums directors’ qualifications of America and French, and using the analyzing construct of “Iceberg model”, to conclude what the professional competencies are the director of public fine arts museum is needed. The Part 2 is collecting the opinions of the directors and all of the outside members who concern about public fine arts museums’ activities. Finally, to compare these two dimensions of opinions for proposing the conclusions and suggestions. The conclusions of Part 1 research are as following: the first is comparing Taiwan public fine arts museums directors’ professional competencies with the qualifications of America and French, the required professional competencies of public fine arts museums director in Taiwan are not completely;second, providing a concentric circles model of Taiwan public fine arts museums directors’ professional competencies, which were taken into consideration on the nowadays trends in museum; third, with “Iceberg model” to propose the dimensions and items of the directors’ professional competencies in Taiwan fine arts museums for reference. The suggestions and findings of Part 2 research are as following: The first is that in the director’s professional competency categories of public fine arts museums in Taiwan, which must be contented the four dimensions that had been proposed by this essay. The second, the order of the directors’ professional competency categories of public fine arts museums in Taiwan, which should be like “the director’ professional competencies concentric circles diagram of public fine arts museums in Taiwan”. And, taking arts (or fine arts) history and theory as the necessary requirement of directors’ professions;Taking the experience and skills of fine arts museums administration as the major requirement of directors’ competencies; In accord with the trend of public administration and museum management nowadays, the Taiwanese cultural authority could take some important competencies of business management into consideration as requirements in directors’ professional competencies; In extend competencies, although this aspect is not necessary, if the director of public fine arts museums in Taiwan has those requirements, there is the opportunity to lead the public fine arts museum management become better and better. The last one is that for our national fine arts museum has steady development, expecting our cultural or educational authority, as soon as possible, to complete an employment, promotion and cultivation talent system for Taiwan public fine arts Museums.

Under the impact of global financial storm, all enterprises face the pressure of cutting manpower resources. In particular, IT employees often need to do overtime work for a living, and due to the logical complexity of its job-characteristics, not every IT employees can withhold their original enthusiasm and loyalty if they do not have adequate professional skills and self-cognition. Personality traits have been widely discussed in human resources, and here we study what kinds of personality traits have significant influences in the IT working environment. The subjects of this study are graduates from MIS department or IT employees. We first choose the sample according to our convenience sampling, and then perform a formal questionnaire survey. There are 174 valid questionnaires returned, and the effective rate is about 74.68%. In addition to the basic background information, we focus mainly upon the differences among five personality traits, career choices, competency cognition, and self-efficacy. This study shows that there is significant difference between workers with high conscientiousness and low conscientiousness. And, for IT employees, interactions among occupation type, academic background, and extraversion or openness of personality traits, relative to competency cognition, are significant. Also, due to the career discrepancy, there are significant differences in self-efficacy and competency cognition for different occupational categories of the IT industry. For workers with high and low openness, their personality traits in self-efficacy and competency cognition are different. In addition, people with different academic background also have significant differences in self-efficacy in their jobs. In summary, the analysis demonstrates that there are significant differences among personality traits, competency cognition, and self-efficacy. So people who wish to work in the information industry should consider their own personality to decide whether they are suitable or not.

Human resources are the most important capital of an organization as well as the key to its success. The traditional selection system emphasizes the candidate’s past performance that cannot be used to estimate the candidate’s potentiality and his or her competency for future tasks. Therefore, an ideal selection system should be based on an assessment that evaluates both the candidate’s past performance and the competency required for the target position. This study started with literatures reviews. Then, based on the job analysis and subject matter experts’ judgments collected through face-to-face interviews, a competency and task list for local fire department supervisors was developed. To examine reliability and validity of this list, a survey to local fire department supervisors was conducted. After confirming the management competency of the tasks of the target position, and collecting the fire department supervisors’ lead tasks and methods of handling those tasks, this study developed a Work Inventory for Supervisors in Fire Departments. After determining the grading level, this study conducted the examination to verify the reliability and validity, and received the following findings for fire service supervisors: 1. The core competency includes eight items: communication and coordination, leadership, problem solving, judgmental analysis, interpersonal relationships, execution, emotional stability, and stress tolerance. 2.The critical tasks include eight items: being proficient at handling the emergency medical technique and rescue procedure; comprehending each basic emergency aid skills; promoting the emergency guidance, such as CPR and Hemilich maneuver; managing subordinates’ daily work; coordinating and assisting the chief; operating rescue equipment; assisting with commanding and deploying at the scene of fires and other emergency situations; and advocating emergency guidance to organizations, schools and communities. 3. Besides a few services, the results of the opinions received from lieutenants from different backgrounds (different age, serving seniority, unit characteristic) do not have observable differences. 4. The main purpose of the written situational test is to assess the candidates' capacity for communication and coordination, problem solving, and judgmental analysis. The results of the written examination confirmed that the Work Inventory is effective. The group of superior lieutenants who scored higher points than the group of common lieutenants also had shown superior work performance. 5. The main purpose of the oral situational test is to assess the candidates' capacity for judgmental analysis, problems solving, and leadership. The content of the test is simulated from real tasks and the assessors were all senior officers who are good at interacting with candidates during the assessment, which confirm the true fairness in government promotion system that recognized by civil servants.

Lane, India F. "Faculty Perspectives on the Importance and Place of Nontechnical Competencies in Veterinary Medical Education at Five North American Colleges of Veterinary Medicine." 2008. http://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_graddiss/560.

Abstract:
Successful veterinary practice requires a unique combination of medical competence and other professional skills that include empathy, communication skills, business and management skills. Results of two recent national studies have indicated that many veterinarians possess the medical knowledge, but not the ancillary skills, that can determine their economic success. Furthermore, growth in non-practice veterinary careers and changes in food animal production medicine have accentuated the need for veterinarians with exceptional teamwork, management and leadership skills. These nontechnical competencies pose a challenge to veterinary educators, who have traditionally focused on transfer of biomedical knowledge and have had limited involvement in these policy issues. In this study, veterinary faculty from five veterinary colleges were surveyed regarding the importance of nontechnical skills for veterinary graduates, where nontechnical skills should be taught, and their own role and level of preparation in cultivating such skills. Faculty respondents uniformly agreed that nontechnical competencies are important for veterinary graduates and should be cultivated across the spectrum of preveterinary, veterinary and postgraduate education. The support is greatest for critical thinking and intrapersonal competencies and less for management and business competencies. Basic science, nonveterinarian and junior faculty tend to more strongly appreciate the importance of nontechnical skills. Large animal faculty and midcareer faculty exhibit a more reserved level of support. Women faculty are more likely to support the development of nontechnical competencies across the continuum of education. Junior faculty, though supportive of the importance of such skills, are less likely than other faculty to view veterinary clinical education as a primary time for their development. Junior faculty are also less likely to perceive a personal role in the cultivation of nontechnical competencies in veterinary students. Faculty members’ view of the role and composition of preveterinary and preclinical veterinary education, and their perceptions of personal ability in the cultivation of nontechnical competencies, may be unique to an institution. Institutional and professional leaders should tailor faculty development and curricular discussions with these disciplinary and career stage differences in mind. Educational leaders should also work toward building integrated methods of training veterinary students in business, management, coaching and leadership skills.

The present research involved gauging preschoolers’ understanding of a key arithmetic concept, the addition-subtraction inverse principle (e.g., 4 + 3 – 3 = 4), using the missing addend task adapted from the one designed by Gilmore (2006). Forty-eight 5- to 6-year-old Taiwanese children with gender and SES balanced from three public preschools participated in the study. Participants were clinically interviewed for the understanding of inversion and basic number competence with concrete stimuli manipulated. Results showed that six year olds outperformed their counterparts of 5 year olds, whereas no gender and SES effect was found. Children began to fully grasp the understanding of inversion around six year olds. Among four types of inverse problems, the missing outcome was the easiest while the missing start, the hardest. On top of that, participants’ mental RSS (Representational Set Size) was highly correlated to their understanding of inversion. Future study can be done to investigate how preschoolers at 7 year olds or older performed in our inversion tasks and when the comprehensive understanding of inversion is fully achieved.

This study is aimed to investigate the relationship between children’s ability of delay gratification, emotional competence, and, children’s background variables such as genders, socio-economic status (SES) and Intelligence Quotient (IQ) . The judgment sampling was adopted by this study. Subjects of the study were five to six-year-old children from one public day-care center, two subsidiary kindergartens of elementary schools, along with a private kindergarten. Four participated classes were located in Taitung city, Taitung County and Pintung city. There were 35 boys and 35 girls, with a total of 70 children participated in this study. The process of the delaying gratification experiment was about 30 minutes for all participated children in all four classes. The results were analyzed from the aspects of gender, families’ SES and IQ of individual participants and their ability of delay of gratification. Correlation analysis were used to observed the relationship between children’s emotional competence and the ability of delay of gratification. The findings of the current research are as following: 1. There is not statistically significant difference between Children’s gender and the ability to delay of gratification; in addition, the two variables are not associate to each other. 2. There is a positive relationship associated between Children’s families’ socio-economic status and the ability to delay of gratification. 3. Child’s IQ is not associated with the ability to delay of gratification. 4. Children emotional compentence is associated with the ability to delay gratification. In addition, an association was found between “emotion awareness and recognition” as well as “emotion regulation”. On the other hand, there was no relationship between “emotion understanding” and “emotional expression”. 5. The analysis of prediction on the childrens’ delay of gratification and the emotional competence can effectively explained children’s competence of emotion. 6. The analysis of prediction on the children’s’ emotional competence and the ability of delay of gratification can effectively explained children’s ability of delay gratification. Based on four different categories of child’s emotional competence, the variable of “emotion regulation” can successfully predict the ability to delay gratification.

Abstract:
The Department of Library and Information Science, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, in association with UNESCO, completed a research study to measure information literacy competency and reading habits amongst the urban and semi-urban habitants in a metropolitan city in India. UNESCO releases a report on this research entitled Information Literacy Competency and Readership Study of Five Specific Localities in Urban, Industrial and Semi-Urban Areas of Kolkata Metropolitan City. The study sought to identify and critically examine the information literary competency and reading habits of mixed habitants, having contrasting professions or vocations. More particularly, the study had the following objectives: * to assess the readership of people from different social strata of five specific localities of Kolkata metropolitan city; * to measure the encroachment of different media on people's reading habit; * to find out the probable causes behind the difference in pattern of the reading habits of people in different localities of Kolkata; * to assess the role played by public libraries in promoting reading habits; and * to map the information literacy level of people living in urban, industrial and semi-urban areas of Kolkata. This study illustrates information seeking behaviour of diverse groups of habitants, including youths, women, industrial workers and elderly persons. The report concludes that the number of men who do not read regularly far exceeds the number of women in the same category, and that women are more prone to use libraries for satisfaction of their reading needs. Among the non-print media, television attracted most respondents. The study also demonstrated that, despite the electronic media boom, reading still survives. The public libraries in the city play wider role to inculcate reading habits amongst youths and neo-literates. This study suggests that information literacy competency and lifelong education can also be imparted to marginalised groups through public library networks in the country.

On average, there are more than 300 chemical accidents every year in Taiwan. Every time, you can see the firefighters moving through the emergency sites and perform the rescue operation at the same time. However, in addition to dealing with chemical disasters, firefighters get other tasks to perform, such as Emergency Medical Service、mountain accident rescue、drowning accident rescue、Fire-fighting inspection、cracking down on firecrackers and so on.React to the different types of tasks, firefighters follow different safety precautions. Among the tasks, the type of life-saving rescue requires more sophisticated equipment and intensive training courses.Hence, according to the chemical disasters rescue task, National Fire Agency schedules basic and advanced courses of chemical disasters rescue , and chemical disasters rescue commanding officer. Through hands on operations outside and inside in NFA training center, firefighters own comprehensive thinking of logic. Further, they could protect life of colleagues. This research is based on planning chemical disasters rescue training by literature review. Besides, we could understand the current situation of the professional ability of dealing with chemical disasters of one branch in Pingtung by the questionnaire. In the past few years, rank-and-file police men have faced a shortage of manpower. From the 100 years of the Republic of China, a large number of fourth-class police special examinations have been recruited. Until this year, the police stations were gradually replenished, but a large number of special recruits were recruited. After entering the police workplace, there is always a high turnover rate. The police work is no more than normal work, with high working hours, unfixed duty hours, and high-risk situations when performing duties. These must be actually experienced before real experience of what is real police work; even worse, police work is varied. The challenges and problems faced in each service are not the same. The common sense and knowledge required are more than other tasks. Many people have entered the police work and are self-supporting because of the legendary high salary, but they come in. Only then did I know that this salary was hard to come by. Therefore, while recruiting the grassroots police manpower, although the amount of grassroots manpower has been substantially supplemented at the beginning of this year (2019), whether it can be improved in terms of quality; the quality requirements are nothing but organizational identity and The improvement of work competency is based on the basic research of grassroots police personnel. The quantitative research method of questionnaire survey is adopted, and the answering website is sent to the grassroots police who are familiar to the researchers by snowballing, and then expanded to the same service. The grassroots police of the unit collected a total of 322 valid. The research results show that from the analysis of the situation of team identification, normative identification, peer relationship and professional cognition, duty ability, duty attitude, etc., work experience has a negative impact on organizational identity, work experience and organizational identity are all work competencies. With positive impacts, it is recommended to the police manpower selection unit and the police unit. It is expected that the recruitment of grassroots manpower in the future will be slightly adjusted to eliminate discrepancies or cognitive differences in police work as early as possible. People, reduce the turnover rate, while saving training funds.

Background and Purpose: The quantity of cough syrup has soared in recent years, which is also one of the severely drug abuse in Taiwan. However, in terms of cough syrup usage, no studies have been reported on the self-medication behavior among adults. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the self-medication behavior, medication cognition, perceived risk and attitude towards correct medication use of cough syrup among adults. The results of this study could be used as a reference for drug education to advocate and promote medication safety. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used in this study. Participants over the age of 20 were recruited from pharmacies in New Taipei City from February to March 2013. The number of participants totaled 313. The research tool used was a self-made questionnaire which consisted of five parts: basic data, five core competencies of correct medication use, cognition of cough syrup, perceived risk of cough syrup, and cough syrup-taking behavior. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and general linear model analysis were analyzed using SPSS statistical software. Results: The five core competencies of correct medication use, the cognition of cough syrup, and the perceived risk of cold syrup showed significant correlation ( P<0.001). In addition, results found that participants on cough syrup medication scored lower in the five core competencies of correct medication use, the perceived risk of cold syrup, and the cognition of cough syrup than those not on cough syrup medication. Furthermore, results also showed that the five core competencies of correct medication use, the cognition of cough syrup, and the perceived risk of cold syrup were influenced by the age and education levels of the participants. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the five core competencies of correct medication use have a significant positive correlation with the self-medication practices of participants, the cognition of cough syrup, and the perceived risk of cold syrup. However, it could also be affected by age and education levels. In participants on cough syrup medication, their knowledge on the uses and dosage of cough syrup are inadequate. Each community pharmacy should implement guidelines for the five core competencies of correct medication to enhance medication safety.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent studies confirm that personality tests are widely used for selection in North American organizations and that their frequency of use continues to grow (Boudrias, Pettersen, Longpre & Plunier 2008; Rothstein & Goffin, 2006 ). However, research shows that the predictive relationship between personality and overall job performance is generally weak and that it remains similar to the initial results on the subject (Morgeson et al, 2007b;. Dzieweczynski & Murphy, 2005). This thesis aims to determine whether an improvement in the predictive relationship between personality and job performance could be achieved by modifying the way data obtained from personality inventories is used and by specifying the criteria to predict. To do so, the predictive ability of an approach centered on the criterion, that is to say, the use of compound variables of personality, is compared with the traditional approach centered on the predictor, in this case, the five factors (Big five). Moreover, job performance is operationalized in terms of job competencies, which makes it possible to differentiate the criteria and to increase its specificity. Hypotheses specifying the personality factors that should predict each competency are tested. In addition, hypotheses specifying the personality traits used to create the compound variables are also tested. Finally, a hypothesis comparing the predictive power of the two approaches is tested. The sample consisted of 225 employees occupying various jobs in a large Quebec organization. These employees have completed a work-contextualized personality inventory through the selection process of the organization. Their immediate supervisor conducted an assessment of their competencies and of their performance at least six (6) months after being hired. Thus, the design of this research is predictive and the method used is based on a confirmatory strategy, which is similar to the normal practices of testing used by industrial and organizational psychologists. Results indicate that the competencies are better predicted by a predictor-centered approach. Indeed, only three hypotheses pertaining to the relationship between personality factors and competencies proved partially supported. The results of additional statistical analyzes, performed in order to better understand the initial results, suggest the presence of moderating variables, including, in particular, the situational characteristics. In conclusion, it seems, at this time, much more likely for researchers to find a structured method for creating compound variables that would provide stronger predictive relationship, than to discover new compound variables that would be predictive of performance in every job and every organization. In addition, we encourage practitioners to pay attention to the way they use personality data. For the moment, it seems that personality factors predict, in part, future job performance. However, empirical evidence on the effectiveness of alternative approaches is relatively rare, and insufficient to accurately guide practitioners through the choice necessary for their use.
