Abstract:
The world has seen some rather significant changes in recent years, and with it the way we interact and relate to it. The advent of social media has given rise to a phenomenon in which the invoking of the spreading culture of fitness has allowed a behavior consisting of the publication of increasingly sexually explicit and provocative material to take hold and become normalized among Swedish youth. The purpose of this study is to explore the drive and reasoning governing the concept of personal expression and the publication of personal material in the modern digital age of social media. I aim to do this by combining the perspectives outlined in the works of Thorstein Veblen and Jean Baudrillard respectively, with the three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis as created by Norman Fairclough. This methodological approach, combining theory and methodological guidelines, will then be applied to the modern Swedish phenomena surrounding fitness and its emanation and expression on the popular social media platform Instagram. By studying the images and their related captions the aim was to decipher the discursive relations and conditions that maintain and sustain this behavior and allow it to be normalized. The resulting interpretations indicate the occurrence of a discursive masking of the underlying strive for social validation through the acquisition of social capital. By invoking fitness as a legitimizing factor the discourse transforms the reality of these publications from something which would otherwise be frowned upon, into a behavior more in line with existing social norms.

Abstract:
Fitness landscape is a concept, which describes the dependence of phenotype on genotype. It was proposed almost a hundred years ago but only recent burst of technologies finally allowed exploring it. We studied different aspects of fitness landscape applying both: computational and experimental approaches. Using mammalian mitochondrial tRNAs we proved that evolution can proceed not only along the ridges of high fitness but also cross the low fitness valleys. Functional analysis of more than 56 000 mutants of green fluorescent protein from Aequorea victoria (avGFP) allowed us to describe local fitness landscape around a particular fitness peak. In addition to this we studied a case of population being on a slope – genetic code is undergoing changes in Methanosarcina making them stay in sub-optimum.

Abstract:
Lack of physical activity is a major problem contributing to diseases and poor health. Nowadays, mobile fitness apps serve in important roles in encouraging and facilitating people to do more physical exercise. Many apps focus primarily on individual behavioral strategies, such as displaying individual steps to encourage physical activity. Such strategies help evoke one's internal motivation such as peer recognition and competition achievement. However, such apps usually de-emphasize or ignore interpersonal behavioral strategies, such as team rank. And group-based strategies are very important in aspects such as peer recognition and can facilitate more physical activity. This research explores the design strategies of group-based dynamic approaches for encouraging physical activity in small-size groups. The development effort takes into account the different roles of mobile devices and laptops and the evaluation explored the effectiveness of the design.

Lack of physical activity is a major problem contributing to diseases and poor health. Nowadays, mobile fitness apps like Fitbit and Runkeeper help encourage people to exercise. Many apps focus primarily on things like steps for each person. However, this research shifts the focus to small team goals and motivations, such as team rank and team progress toward an overall goal. This research explores ways to get people motivated through showing them information on their mobile phone or a web site. Several different visual displays were created and evaluated.

Ylinen, S. (Senja). "”Fitness-urheilija koulumaailmassa”:opiskelijoiden ja opettajien kokemuksia fitness-urheilijan elämäntavan toteuttamisesta koulumaailmassa." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2017. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201712013252.

Full text
Abstract:
Tämän empiirisen tutkimuksen aineistonkeruumenetelmänä on käytetty kirjoitelmia. Kirjoitelmat ovat fitness-urheilijoiden (n=8) kirjoittamia, joissa he kuvaavat kokemuksiaan kilpaurheilun ja koulumaailman kohtaamisesta. Kyseessä on laadullinen tutkimus, jonka tutkimusmenetelmänä on käytetty fenomenografista tutkimusotetta. Aineiston analyysimenetelmänä on käytetty sisällön analyysiä. Tutkimuksen toteutuksessa on huolehdittu eettisyyden hyvästä toteutumisesta. Tutkimusaineistoa on käsitelty kunnioituksella ja tutkittavien identiteetti on ehdottomasti säilytetty. Tutkimukselle olisi mahdollista tehdä jatkotutkimuksia suuremmalla otannalla ja käyttää kenties haastattelua aineistonkeruumenetelmänä.

Abstract:
Objectives To assess physical fitness in pregnancy and to evaluate its effect on perceived health, back pain, blood pressure and duration of gestation. Also, to evaluate the effect of serum relaxin levels on blood pressure and duration of gestation. Material and methods A prospective cohort of 520 pregnant women were examined in early pregnancy and five months postpartum with regard to socio-demographic characteristics and estimated peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2 peak, est.). Serum concentrations of relaxin were carried out in early pregnancy. Physical exercise, possible back pain and blood pressure were measured repeatedly throughout pregnancy. Results Absolute V̇O2 peak, est. in early pregnancy was positively correlated to perceived health, which was lower during than after pregnancy. The average absolute V̇O2 peak, est. in early pregnancy of 2.4 l/minute was 0.02 l/minute less than the V̇O2 peak, est. postpartum, while regular physical exercise decreased throughout pregnancy. Absolute V̇O2 peak, est. in early pregnancy was not associated to the incidence of any low back pain location in pregnancy or postpartum, but inversely to intensity of back pain and diastolic blood pressure and positively with duration of gestation. Elevated serum relaxin levels were associated with decreased diastolic blood pressure and higher duration of gestation among women with miscarriage. Conclusions Perceived health, diastolic blood pressure and duration of gestation were positively affected by physical fitness while no effect was shown on the incidence of back pain. The effect of physical fitness on duration of gestation and diastolic blood pressure might have clinical implications as well as the increased serum relaxin levels on miscarriages.

Wesche, Philipp L. "Fitness variance and sex." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/11543.

Full text
Abstract:
I present a thorough investigation of the meaning of fitness variance in the context of conditional sex expression, followed by a comprehensive analysis of a weak maternal effects model of conditional sex expression. This includes a consideration of the effects of different sex expression strategies on the population genetics and conservation ecology of species. I focused on three questions: What is the meaning of fitness variance in the context of conditional sex expression? Under what conditions can conditional sex expression evolve? How can we detect conditional sex expression in natural populations, given new findings on its population genetics and the significance of fitness variance? Findings include the following: 1. Fitness variance is not a useful metric to detect conditional sex expression. 2. Conditional sex expression evolves when selection is greater on one sex than the other; this holds true for a wide range of parameter values. This corroborates existing theory. 3. In the first known model including sexual selection and conditional sex allocation, this combination is shown to produce faster adaptation than sexual selection alone. 4. Conditional sex expression has the potential to increase population longevity, and may additionally spread through clade (or group) selection. 5. Conditional sex expression can be reliably detected using a combination of allele frequency trajectories through time and cross-sectional allele frequency data from polymorphic loci; this combination is necessary to avoid false positives from loci under balancing selection.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the alternative value created by EVOLuSION Fitness. EVOLuSION Fitness is a fitness facility that provides a holistic approach to wellness. Through group fitness, nutrition, and accountability classes, and accountability emails and texts, EVOLuSION Fitness is able to motivate individuals suffering from maintainable chronic conditions to exercise and make healthier lifestyle decisions. EVOLuSION Fitness creates social, experiential, and environmental alternative value. This is because clients can potentially improve their quality of life and even potentially increase their life expectancy. Furthermore, as individuals increase their activity, their bodies create endorphins, which in turn improves their mood and self-confidence. Because EVOLuSION Fitness is not like the typical gym, in that it does not have rows upon rows of cardio machines, its carbon footprint is relatively small. Overall, this company is revolutionizing the fitness and health industry.

Full text
Abstract:
Metaheuristics are approximation optimisation techniques widely applied to solve complex optimisation problems. Despite a large number of developed metaheuristic algorithms, a limited amount of work has been done to understand on which kinds of problems the proposed algorithm will perform well or poorly and why. A useful solution to this dilemma is to use fitness landscape analysis to gain an in-depth understanding of which algorithms, or algorithm variants are best suited for solving which kinds of problem instances, even to dynamically determine the best algorithm configuration during different stages of a search algorithm. This thesis for the first time bridges the gap between fitness landscape analysis and algorithm configuration, i.e., finding the best suited configuration of a given algorithm for solving a particular problem instance. Studies in this thesis contribute to the following: a. Developing a novel and effective approach to characterise fitness landscapes and measure problem difficulty with respect to algorithms. b. Incorporating fitness landscape analysis in building a generic (problem-independent) approach, which can perform automatic algorithm configuration on a per-instance base, and in designing novel and effective algorithm configurations. c. Incorporating fitness landscape analysis in establishing a generic framework for designing adaptive heuristic algorithms.

Abstract:
Regular aerobic exercise has a wide range of positive effects on health and cognition. Exercise has been demonstrated to provide a particularly powerful and replicable method of triggering a wide range of structural changes within both human and animal brains. However, the details and mechanisms of these changes remain poorly understood. This thesis undertakes a comprehensive examination of the relationship between brain plasticity and aerobic exercise. A large, longitudinal experiment was conducted in which healthy but sedentary participants were scanned before and after six-weeks of monitored aerobic exercise. Increases in the volume of the anterior hippocampus were observed, as previously reported in an older cohort after a longer exercise intervention. Multimodal imaging methods allowed an in-depth exploration of the mechanisms underlying this volume change, which proved to be dominated by white matter changes rather than the vascular changes that have been previously reported. A surprising global change in the balance of CSF, blood, and brain tissue within the cranial cavity was also observed. Cross-sectional differences in memory and brain structure associated with fitness were also observed. The volume of the anterior hippocampus was shown to correlate with a measure of working memory. Higher cerebral blood volume throughout the brain was found to correlate with greater fitness and better working memory. Focal associations between fitness and magnetic susceptibility, a measure of iron content, were also observed in the basal ganglia. These findings demonstrate that aerobic fitness is associated with improved cognition and brain structure throughout the lifespan rather than simply acting to mitigate age related brain atrophy or accelerate brain development. Finally, a new pipeline was developed for analysing hippocampal morphometry using high-resolution, 7 Tesla scans. Striking variability in the convolution of the hippocampal surface is reported. This technique shows promise for imaging the precise nature of the change in hippocampal volume associated with aerobic exercise. This thesis adds to the evidence that aerobic exercise is a potent catalyst for behavioural and brain plasticity while also demonstrating that the mechanisms for those plastic changes are likely different than previously supposed. Future work will refine these measurement techniques, perhaps to a point where brain changes can be monitored on a single subject level. This work will provide an important tool to understand how best to utilize aerobic exercise to facilitate adaptive behavioural changes, mitigate the negative effects of ageing and disease on the brain, and maximize the benefits of active lifestyles.

Abstract:
Mobile communication has become a vital part of modern communication. The cost of network infrastructure has become a deciding factor with rise in mobile phone usage. Subscriber mobility patterns have major effect on load of radio cell in the network. The need for data analysis of subscriber mobility data is of utmost priority. The paper aims at classifying the entire dataset provided by Telenor, into two main groups i.e. Infrastructure stressing and Infrastructure friendly with respect to their impact on the mobile network. The research aims to predict the behavior of new subscriber based on his MOSAIC group. A heuristic method is formulated to characterize the subscribers into three different segments based on their mobility. Tetris Optimization is used to reveal the “Infrastructure Stressing” subscribers in the mobile network. All the experiments have been conducted on the subscriber trajectory data provided by the telecom operator. The results from the experimentation reveal that 5 percent of subscribers from entire data set are “Infrastructure Stressing”. A classification model is developed and evaluated to label the new subscriber as friendly or stressing using WEKA machine learning tool. Naïve Bayes, k-nearest neighbor and J48 Decision tree are classification algorithms used to train the model and to find the relation between features in the labeled subscriber dataset

Abstract:
Research suggests that individuals who have increased fitness knowledge via health education are more likely to be physically active and fit. In addition, an individual’s health literacy is suggested to play a substantial role towards the acquisition of health knowledge. However, literature delineating the relationship between health knowledge, health literacy, and the components of health-related physical fitness is scarce and inconsistent. The Canadian Physical Activity, Fitness and Lifestyle Approach (CPAFLA) represents a series of standardized fitness testing procedures developed by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. In addition, the CPAFLA provides important health-related information to individuals intended to promote healthy lifestyle activities. To-date, the influence of the CPAFLA on health-related physical fitness knowledge and the components of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) regarding physical activity has yet to be examined. One large study examining two distinct sub-questions was conducted. The first question examined objectively the relationship between health-related physical fitness knowledge, health literacy, and health-related physical fitness in 34 participants (18 F, 16 M; 19-49 years). Knowledge was examined using the FitSmart, while health literacy and physical fitness were assessed via the Newest Vital Sign and the CPAFLA, respectively. Results indicated that knowledge was a significant correlate (r=O.40, p

Lee, Patrick Quinn. "Essays in occupational fitness and absenteeism." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25151.

Abstract:
Occupational fitness programs have enjoyed enormous popularity over the course of the past decade. Their continuing penetration into all sectors of the business community coupled with the rapid growth of organizations serving professional fitness personnel, suggests that their presence may be permanent. A major reason for the popularity of occupational fitness programs, is the claim that fitness programs can reduce employee absenteeism. Two important issues at this time are: (1) the role of physical fitness in mediating sickness absence behavior, and, (2) the role of participation in occupational fitness programs as a way of enhancing worker attendance motivation. These issues fit in well with the Steers & Rhodes (1978) Process Model, a conceptual framework which deals with employee absenteeism from the standpoints of ability to attend (ie. high fitness) and motivation to attend (ie. high morale). The Steers & Rhodes theoretical model was chosen as an appropriate vehicle to guide this study. Part I reviewed the claim that physical fitness as a physiological state, is inversely related to sickness absence among employees. The literature review suggested that fit employees would miss fewer days from work than unfit employees. The prediction that physical fitness and sickness absence will be inversely related, formed the core of the hypotheses generated in Part I. In addition, hypotheses were also developed concerning the possible effects of gender, age, length of service and company affiliation. Correlational analyses were performed on several physiological and absence variables obtained from a sample of employees from the years 1979 through 1984. Modest but significant inverse correlations were found to exist between MVO₂ and a number of different absence measures. The magnitude of these correlations disappeared in some cases when the groups were controlled for gender. Significant correlations were also found between variables such as length of service and absence or age and absence. Absence patterns for males and females and management and classified employees also showed significant group differences. These results point to the need to consider these personal and socio cultural variables when attempting to describe any relationships between occupational fitness and absenteeism. Part II chose the Steers & Rhodes concept of motivation to attend. Based on the review of literature, it was expected that participants in the company fitness program would report positive changes in a number of attitudinal and personal variables. A simple questionnaire was developed to assess this change, and the entire population of a very large (n=1076) corporate fitness program was polled. Respondents in the main, indicated a significant improvement in their personal perception of a number of different attitudinal variables. The magnitude of this improvement was significantly related to the length of time they have been members of the program and their degree of participation in the program

Abstract:
Environments are changing rapidly, which renders many local populations susceptible to extinction unless they can adapt to these changes. Studies of rapid adaptation commonly document the evolution of individual traits. Overall adaptation however, is a function of fitness itself, rather than the individual traits that contribute to fitness. Although numerous studies provide evidence for the evolution of specific traits on contemporary time scales, no published studies of wild animal populations have examined the evolution of a major fitness component following environmental change. My research demonstrates that an introduced population of guppies (Poecilia reticulata) has adapted to its new environment in less than ten years (13-26 generations). This adaptation consists of several phenotypic traits that have changed in the expected direction. Most critically, the introduced population now has higher survival than its ancestral source population when both are tested together in the introduction site. These results show that important components of fitness can evolve rapidly in populations, and that this evolution might influence the persistence of populations in the face of environmental change.

Newer products such as the Cybex Arc Trainer are vying to replicate this success, but are only slowly gaining acceptance. Most companies that have tried to succeed with unique products or heavy telemarketing, have failed in leaving any lasting or notable mark. Abstract:
Summary Aim. The purpose of this study was to examine age and gender differences in muscular strength and flexibility among primary school children and to compare the findings with data for school-going children from other countries. Method. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2 015 primary school children in Makurdi, Nigeria (N.=979 boys; N.=1 036 girls) aged 9-12 years, who performed the FITNESSGRAM (CIAR, 2000) physical fitness tests. Results. A non-significant difference in flexibility was found between boys (mean: 27.1±4.4 cm) and girls (mean: 26.9±4.6 cm) (P=0.851; P>0.05). ANOVA test indicated no significant sex main effect on flexibility test scores (F(1, 2007)=0.027; P>0.05), whereas this yielded a substantial age main effect (F(3, 2007)=3.407; P<0.05). On average, boys had a slight, but significantly superior push-up performance (9.1±3.9) compared to girls (8.6±3.5) (P=0.04; P<0.05). Results also indicated substantial age difference in push-up scores among boys and girls (F(1, 3)=11.1; P<0.05). There were no significant age/ sex interaction effect (F(3, 2007)=1.396; P>0.05) and sex main effect in the sit-up performances for the boys and girls (P=0.188; P>0.05). Boys had significantly (P<0.05) higher mean sit-up values, at ages 10 and 12, whereas no statistically significant sex main effect was found regarding the children’s sit-up scores (F(1, 2007)=1.134; P>0.05). Conclusion. Whereas the study showed non-significant sex and age differences in flexibility between boys and girls, marked age- and gender- related discrepancies were found regarding muscular strength. The muscular endurance component showed inconsistent results across age groups.

Marshall, Tristan C. "Inbreeding and fitness in wild ungulates." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/12574.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I examine inbreeding and its fitness consequences in two species of wild ungulates, red deer (Cervus elaphus) and Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx). The long term study of red deer on the Isle of Rum has included profiling of individuals at polymorphic protein and microsatellite loci. I developed a likelihood- based method for large-scale paternity inference and implemented it via the computer program CERVUS. The system allowed genetic inference of paternity with 80% confidence for 536 red deer calves. I used these data to construct pedigrees and found that 11% of calves were the offspring of matings between paternal half sibs; however most inbreeding coefficients were zero. Microsatellite-based measures of inbreeding and outbreeding, individual heterozygosity and mean d2, were calculated using data from nine microsatellite loci. Among stags born 1982-1986, neither individual heterozygosity nor mean d2 influenced survival to reproductive age, while mean d2 but not individual heterozygosity positively influenced stag lifetime mating success among males which reproduced. Arabian oryx went extinct in the wild in 1972 and were reintroduced to Oman and Saudi Arabia after several generations of breeding in captivity. In reintroduced Arabian oryx in Oman no relationship was found between inbreeding coefficient and juvenile survival. However individual heterozygosity was positively related to juvenile survival while mean d2 was negatively related to juvenile survival, implying simultaneous inbreeding and outbreeding depression. Genetic, environmental and anthropogenic factors all influence the survival of reintroduced Arabian oryx, but despite the joint influence of these factors, the Omani population is growing rapidly.

Abstract:
In today’s neoliberal climate, a burgeoning health consciousness pervades American society. Health and fitness discourses are increasingly framed through neoliberal ideologies, contributing to the rise of “healthism”. This theory prescribes that health should be taken up as an individual responsibility and moral obligation. Healthism, coupled with societal pressure to adhere to certain cultural bodily ideals, propels individuals to take ownership of their health and well-being. More specifically, Americans are encouraged to strive towards cultivating a “healthy” body, which is a fit body, because the physical body has come to symbolize health and morality. With the phenomenal growth of the health and fitness industry, gyms have become an increasingly popular venues where individuals go to address their health and fitness needs. However, class status plays a critical role in Americans’ capacity to pursue health-promoting knowledge and resources. Structural barriers related to economic inequalities alienate individuals of low-socioeconomic status from mainstream health practices, including gym participation. The current project draws upon ethnographic fieldwork in a commercial gym in the Boston, Massachusetts area. Through a qualitative investigation of Planet Fitness, I seek to contribute to the empirical base of knowledge surrounding gyms, specifically, and health and fitness discourses, at large. Planet Fitness, a hugely successful gym franchise across the United States, has developed a unique brand that recognizes the various economic and social barriers that prevent and discourage gym participation. Findings reveal that by dramatically lowering the price of memberships, developing an inclusive environment, called the “Judgment Free Zone”, and offering the convenience of nearly 700 locations nationwide, Planet Fitness makes health and wellness more affordable and accessible for Americans.

Nowadays, organizations are facing changing requirements. Dynamic capability is playing a critical role in helping organizations survive in rapidly changing environments. However, what kind of organizational orientation can enhance dynamic capability? Prior research proved that program orientation can coordinate projects appropriately and respond changes quickly. This research tries to explore the relationship between program orientation and dynamic capability, and we divide dynamic capability in two parts, technical fitness and evolutionary fitness which represent internal dynamic capability and external dynamic capability individually. We also discuss shared vision and social integration that may effects program orientation individually. This research collects empirical data from 125 manufacturing firms in Taiwan and analyzes the data with SmartPLS. The result shows that shared vision and social integration have positive impact on program orientation, and program orientation are positively associated with technical fitness and evolutionary fitness.
