Lu, Guanzhou. "Characterising fitness landscapes with fitness-probability cloud and its applications to algorithm configuration." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2014. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4756/.

Abstract:
Metaheuristics are approximation optimisation techniques widely applied to solve complex optimisation problems. Despite a large number of developed metaheuristic algorithms, a limited amount of work has been done to understand on which kinds of problems the proposed algorithm will perform well or poorly and why. A useful solution to this dilemma is to use fitness landscape analysis to gain an in-depth understanding of which algorithms, or algorithm variants are best suited for solving which kinds of problem instances, even to dynamically determine the best algorithm configuration during different stages of a search algorithm. This thesis for the first time bridges the gap between fitness landscape analysis and algorithm configuration, i.e., finding the best suited configuration of a given algorithm for solving a particular problem instance. Studies in this thesis contribute to the following: a. Developing a novel and effective approach to characterise fitness landscapes and measure problem difficulty with respect to algorithms. b. Incorporating fitness landscape analysis in building a generic (problem-independent) approach, which can perform automatic algorithm configuration on a per-instance base, and in designing novel and effective algorithm configurations. c. Incorporating fitness landscape analysis in establishing a generic framework for designing adaptive heuristic algorithms.

Regele, Amanda Colleen. "Effects of Online Media Applications on Fitness Compliance." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/297732.

Abstract:
Two significant trends are overcoming today’s society: the growth in obesity rates and health concerns as well as the rise of the technology era and use of social media. The purpose of this study is to analyze the overlap between these two powerful forces and determine whether modern media applications that are geared toward health and fitness play a significant role in helping that user achieve their goals and thus help address the United States’ obesity problem. Findings from this study show that people who use fitness applications are likely to run more frequently within a given week, signifying higher adherence to exercise. Additionally, across all categories, those who track workouts showed greater improvement and higher motivation than those who do not. On top of this, those who track and also collaborate with others within the application showed greater improvement than those who tracked without collaborating. While past research indicates that only intrinsic motives lead to long-term compliance, fitness applications, amidst being focused on mainly extrinsic factors, achieve a similar result by fostering enjoyment within the user by offering social interaction, competition, expertise, and satisfaction from continual tracking. This study shows how social media can be used to foster long-term fitness compliance, which is ultimately the only way to truly combat the mounting obesity problem within our nation. In essence, technology doesn’t have to make you lazier- it can do the opposite.

The main subject of this dissertation is captology, an area of study that comprehends the overlap of computer technology and persuasion. The research proposes a comparison between earlier suggested and the current development trends of persuasive technology. The study begins with a contextualization addressing the relation between society and computer technologies. It approaches the interaction design, with focus on the user, analyzing design approaches for the area with emphasis, at first, in user centered design, and then in experience design. In addition, the realm of ubiquity is presented as an important factor, when it comes to social/cultural, technological and usage views, concerning persuasive technology. A captology concept is then presented, with the ethical issues involved in designing with persuasion and the trends for the area, pointed by B.J. Fogg, one of the pioneers in the study of computers as persuasive agents. Focusing these trends, the research scope is delimited, defining iPhone fitness applications as core objects for the study. The dissertation presents the research, from the browsing and selecting process of applications, as well as interviews with developers, questionnaires with users and predictive evaluation of selected applications, to finally elaborate a comparative analysis between the pointed trends and the achieved results in the present moment, which reflect captology s state of the art.

Abstract:
This study examines the instructing of standardized physical fitness assessment in a mobile environment. The main focus of this research was to determine if the fitness tests can be performed with correct techniques with the aid of a mobile application. Different types of visual aids, instructions and mobile devices were evaluated and compared in relation to usability and prevalence of errors. A prototype of a mobile fitness assessment application, My Energy Test, was used in a 2 x 2 x 3 between-subjects user study with a total of 72 participants. Data was gathered using a postquestionnaire and recording user tests. The questionnaire measured the perceived usability, and video recordings were analyzed for deviations, i.e. errors, from the correct test techniques. Main findings show that the device used did not have an effect on the perceived usability, but influenced the quantity of errors made. Moreover, it was found that audio and text instructions were perceived with equal usability with each other. The visual aid used had a statistically significant effect on the perceived usability score with video and picture series being rated more favorably compared to animation. The best combination of least amount of errors and perceived usability was observed when either video or picture series visual aid was combined with text instructions. It was concluded that standardized physical fitness tests can be carried out with sufficient correctness without the help of a professional instructor
Tämä tutkimus tarkastelee standardoitujen kuntotestien ohjeistusta mobiiliympäristössä. Tutkimuksen pääpaino oli selvittää voiko kuntotestit suorittaa oikeilla tekniikoilla mobiilisovelluksen avulla. Eri visuaalisia apukeinoja, ohjeistuksia ja mobiililaitteita arvioitiin ja vertailtiin käytettävyyden ja virheiden esiintymisen suhteen. My Energy Test -kuntotestisovelluksen prototyyppiä käytettiin 2 x 2 x 3 kohteiden välisessä käyttäjätutkimuksessa, jossa oli kokonaisuudessaan 72 osallistujaa.

Abstract:
Full-body controlled games offer the opportunity for not only entertainment, but education and exercise as well. Refined gameplay mechanics and content can boost intrinsic motivation and keep people playing over a long period of time, which is desirable for individuals who struggle with maintaining a regular exercise program. Within this gameplay genre, dance rhythm games have proven to be popular with game console owners. Yet, while other types of games utilize story mechanics that keep players engaged for dozens of hours, motion-controlled dance games are just beginning to incorporate these elements. In addition, this control scheme is still young, only becoming commercially available in the last few years. Instructional displays and clear real-time feedback remain difficult challenges. This thesis investigates the potential for full-body dance games to be used as tools for entertainment, education, and fitness. We built several game prototypes to investigate visual, aural, and tactile methods for instruction and feedback. We also evaluated the fitness potential of the game Dance Central 2 both by itself and with extra game content which unlocked based on performance. Significant contributions include a framework for running a longitudinal video game study, results indicating high engagement with some fitness potential, and informed discussion of how dance games could make exertion a more enjoyable experience.

Abstract:
Plyometric training has always been a topic of interest in terms of sport perfor-mance enhancement and development. The most relevant and up-to-date data has been reviewed to try to answer the question “what kind of plyometric training to use” to improve ones’ performance. The present study demonstrates the use of re-active strength index (RSI) and force-velocity profiling. In the text there is also a presentations of common jumping tests that help practitioners to establish a profile of an athlete. Main findings of this study are: general strength should be developed alongside reactive strength qualities, plyometric training optimized and guided by RSI is highly effective in improving reactive strength ability, demands of a sport determine the manner in which plyometric exercises should be performed, RSI can be used as a representation of neuromuscular fatigue, force-velocity (F-v) approach may help improve the training practice for performance in explosive push-off ac-tions like jumping, through a more efficient monitoring and understanding of the individual determinants of athletic performance, showing the sensitivity of the F-v profile to specific training programs can result in either maximal force or velocity capabilities improvements (determination of F-v imbalances or FVimb) – which is termed “optimized training” and it has been found that an optimized and individu-alized training program specifically addressing the FVimb is more efficient for im-proving jumping performance than traditional resistance training.

Abstract:
This paper contains the information and output from a inquiry done between January and April 2018. The inquiry was done with the purpose to find out whether there was any correlation between a person’s usage of a fitness application and that person´s perceived motivation, health and general well-being. 14 participants answered the inquiry and where divided into two groups, depending on how they answered when asked if they currently used a fitness application. The inquiries were conducted online through Google Survey in order to collect data about the participants, and literature reviews where conducted in order to support the analysis and discussions we made from the results of the collected data. From the results that we gathered we could, amongst others, form the analysis that individually adapted fitness applications and automated updates of the user’s results where what would get more participants to start using fitness applications.

Weston, Matthew. "Physiological demands of elite soccer refereeing : needs analysis and applications to training and monitoring." Thesis, Teesside University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10149/112680.

Full text
Abstract:
The following thesis investigates contemporary issues within the applied physiology of soccer refereeing. 1) Training performance. The impact of a high intensity training regime was examined in a group of elite-level soccer referees. Following a 16-month training period the referees’ performance on the YoYo Intermittent Recovery Test (level 1) improved by 46.5%. 2) Match Demands. The effect of match standard and referee experience upon the objective and subjective match loads of referees was investigated. Match heart rates (HR) and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were both related to standard of competition, with the match loads being higher on the higher standard of competition. Referee experience had no effect upon the referees’ match responses. Using a semi-automatic, video match analysis system the referees’ match activities and factors affecting these activities were also examined. Physical performances were related in part to the physical performances of the players; whilst the distances covered during the first half were related to second half coverage. 3) Ageing and performance. The effect of ageing upon referees’ fitness levels and physical match performances was addressed. Regression analysis revealed a trend towards an agerelated reduction in physical fitness, as determined by the referees’ fitness tests. Match activity analysis demonstrated a clear age-related decline in physical match performance, although this decline did not impair the referees’ ability to keep up with play. 4) Fitness and match performance. The validity of the FIFA referees’ fitness tests was examined. Interval test HR load was significantly correlated to the referees’ match coverage, both total distance and high intensity running. Sprint test scores also demonstrated a significant relationship with the referees’ match sprinting distances. However, given the strength of the relationships only the sprint test showed appropriate construct validity for the physical assessment of soccer referees.

Pires, Fazion Fernanda. "Role of plasmids of Bacillus cereus group in insect larvae."

Abstract:
Bacillus cereus (Bc) and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are two closely related species. Bc is a pathogenic species responsible for gastroenteritis by food-borne. Bt is an entomopathogenic bacterium, which the lifecycle in insect larvae is controlled by quorum sensing systems, such as Rap/Phr, which regulates processes such as sporulation, biofilm formation and conjugation. The presence of these genes in plasmids has been described, furthermore, plasmids have been involved in bacterial adaptation to their ecological niche. In order to understand the role of the plasmids to these species, two complementary works were carried out. First, insect larvae, a privileged ecological niche of Bt strains, were infected with Bc and Bt strains harboring different plasmid contents. Their fitness were evaluated by vegetative cells and spore counts at four time points. Bt and Bc strains were classified into five groups according to the bacterial fitness. In these groups, the plasmid affects positively or negatively the bacterial fitness. The results demonstrated that for B. cereus group strains, getting a pathogenicity plasmid is not enough to effectively increase bacterial population, colonizing insect hosts. The second study characterized the rap/phr system encoded by the cryptic plasmid pHT8_1. The Rap8 protein inhibited the sporulation process in insect larvae. This protein was directly inhibited by the active signaling peptide Phr8. The Rap8/Phr8 system may allow the bacteria to exert a tight control of the sporulation process in the host cadaver for optimizing the multiplication, the survival and the dissemination of the bacteria. Thus, the results of the second study showed that the plasmids can provide advantages for the adaptation and the evolution of B. thuringiensis in its ecological niche, while the results of the first study indicate that B. cereus group strains must have a suitable genetic background to display a high fitness allowing optimal multiplication and dissemination of the bacterial population within insect larvae

Abstract:
The City of Stockholm’s budget for sports is 1.6% of the total city budget in 2014. About 60,000, licensed (age 15 and up, about 50%) and younger actively played soccer in Stockholm in 2005. That is roughly 24% of the total number of participants in sports activities in Stockholm’s district. There is a need for a location-based application (commonly abbreviated "app") to help people spontaneously meet for different sports activities. The app developed and analyzed in this thesis will address this need and assist potential participants in organizing sports activities, deciding to participate in these activities, make friends, etc. Not only large team sports will be considered, but sports done in pairs such as tennis and other sports as well that you do with others. Consider a person who has moved to a new city and wants to play football (soccer), but does not know people in this city. This app can help this person find others who would like to play in a quick and easy way by looking at a map and seeing where others would like to participate in this sport, for example at a particular soccer field, using location information concerning the potential participants and this specific field. Apps that use location information have become very common with the widespread use of smartphones. Such an app provides a location-based service. This thesis describes the design and implementation of an Android app with a location-based service and how to set up this app, what technology is needed to get the needed location information, and the programming language used. In addition, the thesis considers users’ needs and how the app caters to those needs. An analysis will be done of how well this app communicates with a database server as the number of users increases, scales. Performance and load on both the server and app will be considered. The performance will be analyzed to see how well it matches the users’ expectations. The app developed in this thesis will be for the Android platform and Apple's iOS (but the focus in the thesis is on the Android-version). This app will communicate with a database server running a Linux OS, an Apache HTTP server, a MySQL database, and using a PHP programming web infrastructure (such a setup of services is commonly called by the acronym LAMP). The app will connect to Facebook and Twitter to exchange information (however, that is outside the scope of this thesis).

Abstract:
The development of digital support tools and applications for physical activity is growing quickly, and today there are thousands of mobile applications on the market aimed to support the user’s physical exercise. At the same time, there is a rising trend of a sedentary lifestyle with a lack of exercise which has had a negative impact on the population’s health and wellbeing over the last years. Fitness applications are broadly used today and have shown to have a potential in solving this problem. However, the actual benefit of these tools from a user’s perspective is yet under-studied. This study aims to identify what affects user’s motivation when using a fitness application and how these types of applications can be designed to increase user’s engagement. As a theoretical foundation, Hedonic-Motivation System Adoption Model and previous research in motivation, social influences, and user experience were explored to formulate relevant interview questions and guide the analysis of the empirical data. Through qualitative interviews insights from users with experience of using fitness applications as support in their physical exercise are gathered. The results show that ease of use and usefulness was important for most of the informants and that the users found a high value in tracking their physical exercise and development over time. The empirical data also indicate that gaining help to maintain stability rather than setting up concrete goals was perceived as more valuable. Social functionality such as following and comparing one's physical activity with others is also shown to have a significant impact on one's use and involvement in the application. However, consistent with previous research, the value of social features seemed to be dependent on the relation the user has with the other users. Based on the empirical findings design guidelines for development of fitness apps are proposed.

Abstract:
The evolutionary options of a population are strongly influenced by the avail- ability of adaptive mutants. In this thesis, I use the concept of neutral networks to show that neutral drift can actually increase the accessibility of adaptive mu- tants, and therefore facilitate adaptive evolutionary change. Neutral networks are groups of unique genotypes which all code for the same phenotype, and are connected by simple point mutations. I calculate the size and shape of the networks in a small but exhaustively enumerated space of RNA genotypes by mapping the sequences to RNA secondary structure phenotypes. The qual- itative results are similar to those seen in many other genotype–phenotype map models, despite some significant methodological differences. I show that the boundary of each network has single point–mutation connections to many more phenotypes than the average individual genotype within that network. This means that paths involving a series of neutral point–mutation steps across a network can allow evolution to adaptive phenotypes which would otherwise be extremely unlikely to arise spontaneously. This can be likened to walking along a flat ridge in an adaptive landscape, rather than traversing or jumping across a lower fitness valley. Within this model, when a genotype is made up of just 10 bases, the mean neutral path length is 1.88 point mutations. Furthermore, the map includes some networks that are so convoluted that the path through the network is longer than the direct route between two sequences. A minimum length adaptive walk across the genotype space usually takes as many neutral steps as adaptive ones on its way to the optimum phenotype. Finally I show that the shape of a network can have a very important affect on the number of generations it takes a population to drift across it, and that the more routes between two sequences, the fewer generations required for a population to find an advantageous sequence. My conclusion is that, within the RNA map at least, the size, shape and connectivity of neutral networks all have a profound effect on the way that sequences change and populations evolve, and by not considering them, we risk missing an important evolutionary mechanism.

Abstract:
Despite the compelling evidence that physical activity, especially regular physical activity plays a key role in enhancing health and well-being, many people remain physically inactive. To promote physical activity among the general adult population, identifying possible correlates is essential. In this regard, self-determination theory (SDT) with its motivational perspective may provide useful insight. This research examined the collective effect of the sub-theories of SDT (causality orientations theory, basic psychological needs theory, and organismic integration theory) on physical activity behavior explanation among Chinese adults. Given the lack of a measure for causality orientations in the context of physical activity behavior, an attempt was firstly made to develop and validate a psychometrically sound tool, namely the causality orientations scale for physical activity (COS-PA). The COS-PA was developed and validated in multiple phases. First, a scenario/item pool was created from multiple sources. Second, the pool was subjected to face validity, content validity, clarity, readability and comprehensibility appraisal. Adjustments were then made to finalize the initial scale. Third, the factorial, convergent and discriminant validity of the initial COS-PA were assessed via a series of exploratory factor analyses (EFAs), and correlated-trait, correlated-uniqueness analysis in the multi-trait, multi-method approach with two independent samples. The nomological validity of the scale was assessed by correlation analysis with theoretically linked constructs. In addition, the potential effect of social desirability bias of participants’ response to the COS-PA was checked. Fourth, the COS-PA’s reliability was evaluated using multiple methods, including Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, composite reliability and test-retest reliability. Subsequently, the proposed SDT process model (established based on the tenet of SDT and previous findings) was examined for physical activity explanation in an independent sample. Overall, the COS-PA exhibited sufficient validity and reliability in the multi-phasic tests. The proposed SDT process model, describing a motivational sequence whereby causality orientations and perceived autonomy support independently explain basic psychological needs satisfaction and behavioral regulation, which in turn explains PA behavior was partially supported. Moreover, potential indirect effects in the SDT model were examined. Although scale validation is an on-going process, these findings provide evidence for the COS-PA’s adequate psychometric properties and value for future use. Furthermore, the findings lead to a deeper understanding of the explanatory efficacy of the macro-SDT framework (i.e. the SDT process model) for physical activity explanation among the Chinese population. The findings highlight the positive roles of autonomy causality orientation and perceived autonomy support for basic psychological needs satisfaction, self-determined behavioral regulation and physical activity behavior.

Abstract:
Many combinatorial optimization problems are hard to solve and in many cases, exact approaches are impracticable. Among partial search algorithms, metaheuristics are generic algorithms, widely studied in the literature. Their ability to find good solutions varies in function of the problems’ nature et data composing problem instances, and studying efficiently the dynamics of such algorithms is challenging, especially for large instances. We restrain our metaheuristic study to local search algorithms. Basic mechanisms are studied to improve their understanding and assess their ability to find good solutions. We abstract optimization problems into fitness landscapes, thanks to a neighborhood relation between solutions, in order to analyze the dynamics of methods in function of several landscapes characteristics. We study the navigation on these landscapes, firstly by constraining moves to be strictly improving. In particular, we propose the expansion criterion to guide the search process and assess its relevance to guide climbers through good solutions. Variants approximating this principle are proposed and studied, leading to many trade-offs between the ability to find good solutions and the computational cost making them integrable into more complex metaheuristics. Last, we study partial neighborhood local searches, which accept deteriorating moves. In this context, experiments show that simple pivoting rules are sufficient to attain good trade-offs between intensification and diversification and thus reaching good solutions

Abstract:
The Balanced Scorecard for the CrossFit Affiliate will provide unprepared or inexperienced managers with the necessary information to make informed operational decisions. The Balanced Scorecard incorporates financial data, customer satisfaction, internal operations, and future growth to create a series of cause-and-effect relationships that illustrate how decisions in one aspect of a business affect others. The Balanced Scorecard particularly benefits inexperienced managers leading small businesses. As overall small business growth increased, the boutique fitness industry expanded. The CrossFit brand rose in conjunction, but because corporate leaders insist on a hands-off licensing model, affiliate owners do not receive assistance from CrossFit corporate headquarters. In addition, the high frequency of affiliate owners without business education or management experience contributes to the likelihood of failure. Until CrossFit corporate actively guides its licensees, owners need a tool to promote business success. The Balanced Scorecard for the CrossFit Affiliate, comprised of data from one successful and four unsuccessful affiliates, will assist affiliate managers. Profitability, market share, retention, and the introduction of new services are the main drivers of the Balanced Scorecard and augment the analysis of relationships between the financial, customer, internal, and growth perspectives.

Hurst, Christopher. "Combined exercise training in older adults : application of a hydraulic resistance machine for multicomponent fitness improvement." Thesis, Teesside University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10149/621728.

Full text
Abstract:
Ageing is associated with declines in cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness; yet for older adults the ability to perform the basic tasks of daily living is partly dependent on upperand lower-body fitness. Exercise training is an effective approach to counteract these age associated declines, with combined exercise training and high-intensity interval training (HIT) capable of eliciting improvements in cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness simultaneously. Recently, a new hydraulic resistance exercise machine (Speedflex) has been developed with potential to be a viable training mode for older adults allowing users to perform high speed movements with upper- and lower-body muscles. Accordingly, the aim of this thesis was to evaluate the potential effectiveness of Speedflex as a training strategy in older adults. Initially, this work sought to determine the feasibility of performing exercise training using Speedflex in older adults by quantifying the acute training responses to 1) HIT and 2) strength training and comparing these against criterion exercise modes. Here, the observed physiological and perceptual responses demonstrated that Speedflex is a feasible mode of exercise training in older adults, capable of inducing a high-intensity training stimulus. Following this, a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to quantify the effects of same-session combined exercise training in older adults with results demonstrating possibly small to possibly large beneficial effects on measures of fitness. As muscle power appears to be a critical determinant of physical functioning in older adults, chapter five evaluated the reliability of the Nottingham leg extensor power rig, finding it to be reliable both short- and long-term, thereby confirming its suitability as a primary outcome measure for the final study and providing data for sample size estimation. Finally, chapter six evaluated the effects of a 12-week combined upper- and lower-body HIT intervention using Speedflex on physical fitness in older adults. Clear beneficial improvements were observed for participants in the intervention group compared to those in the control group for maximal oxygen uptake (~8%), muscle power (~10%) and muscle strength (~6%). The findings presented in this thesis demonstrate that both same-session combined training and HIT performed using Speedflex are capable of simultaneously improving cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness in older adults.

Abstract:
Abstract Background:  Both the fitness and gamification industry are booming with no signs of slowing down in the near future. Gamified applications are entering the markets, attempting to induce gameful elements into tedious environments to enhance intrinsic motivation. The same goes for the gym sector, as market leaders, such as the Swedish gym chain Nordic Wellness, are increasingly implementing gamification elements into their business models.   Problem: The true effectiveness of gamification on intrinsic motivation remains underdeveloped. Literature highlights the necessity of adapting gamification design towards the end-user, by considering the different effects from the individual game elements and the context. However, the gym context has been completely neglected, even though gamification has become increasingly utilized in this sector.     Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the body of knowledge on how extrinsic mechanisms such as gamification can influence intrinsic motivation. This study utilizes the context of a gamified gym application for Nordic Wellness to determine the motivational potential of game elements. Thereby, the research team attempts to add to the body of literature by expanding on the effectiveness of gamification on intrinsic motivation, while also contributing through entering a currently undiscovered domain of gamification in the gym context.   Method: A qualitative approach with fifteen semi-structured interviews has been conducted on young Swedish adults attending the Swedish gym chain Nordic Wellness.   Results: The findings suggest Self-Determination Theory as a valid framework to examine the effects of gamification on intrinsic motivations. Through connecting the identified themes and theory, a framework is proposed for the evaluation on the effectiveness of game elements on intrinsic motivation. From evaluating the discussed game elements through this framework, recommendations are made for a gamified gym application that is argued to positively satisfy the psychological needs and therefore enhance the intrinsic motivations in a gym context.

Tam, Ka Man. "Application of the social cognitive theory to an electronic activity monitor system-based Physical Activity Intervention for working adults." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2020. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/750.

Abstract:
Adults in Hong Kong show relatively low participation in physical activity. In the wake of technological advancements, it has become necessary to promote physical activity in an innovative approach. To that end, this study aimed to investigate the effect of an application of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) under an eight-week electronic activity monitor system (EAMS)-based intervention on changes in physical activity (PA) as well as its associated SCT constructs of self-efficacy, social support and self-regulation for working adults in Hong Kong. A series of studies were performed: Study 1: In order to assess the validity of the step count output of two popular electronic activity monitor system (EAMS) model, Fitbit Charge HR and Xiaomi Mi Band 2, healthy adult (N=30) worn both EAMS and walked at five predetermined speeds on a treadmill. Two-factor (step x speed) repeated measures ANOVAs was performed to compare the output of devices with manual step count. Result: there was no significant mean difference (p> 0.05) in step count among the Fitbit Charge HR and Mi Band 2 activity monitors and the criterion in all treadmill speeds. Both of them are valid devices for step count in the laboratory setting. Study 2: As to assess the validity of step measurement of Mi Band 2 in the free-living environment, 31 healthy adults were invited for wearing both Mi Band 2 and ActiGraph GT9X Link on their dominant hands wrist for 7 consecutive days. Paired sample t-tests and Pearson correlation were conducted to compare the average steps per day between Mi Band 2 and ActiGraph GT9X Link. Result: there was no significant mean difference (p >0.05) and high positive correlation in step count between the Mi Band 2 and Actigraph. The Mi Band 2 is a valid device for step count in the free-living environment. Study 3: To examine the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of PA related self-efficacy, self-regulation and social support in Hong Kong Chinese adults. There were 230 healthy adults aged 19-63 years recruited. The factorial validity of the scales was assessed by the Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) while criterion validity was assessed by correlating measured constructs with self-reported PA. The internal consistency and scales test-retest reliability were evaluated by Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient, respectively. Result: indicators of CFA supported the one-factor structure while all PA correlates were significant (p<0.01) associated with self-reported PA. All scales demonstrated acceptable internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The results provided psychometric support for using the Chinese version of the scales to measure PA correlates among Hong Kong adults. Main Study: A two-armed randomised controlled trial took place to investigate the effect of an EAMS-SCT intervention on changes in PA and its associated SCT constructs for working adults in Hong Kong. Sixty-four (26 males, 38 females, mean age = 39.98, SD =7.06) participants were stratified based on their job nature and randomly assigned to the control, EAMS only group (n = 33) and the treatment, EAMS-SCT group (n =31) after data screening. Both groups received an EAMS, whereas the EAMS-SCT group received SCT elements in the eight-week intervention, which comprised of one physical activity advisory session conducted by a certified personal trainer and four WhatsApp delivered sessions conducted by the researcher. Outcome measures: Measures of PA (by IPAQ MET score) and SCTs constructs (by the scale of Exercise Self-efficacy, Social Support for Exercise and Physical Activity Self-regulation) of two groups at three times of measurement. 2 x 3 (Group x Time of Measurement) mixed ANOVA and mixed MANOVA were conducted respectively for PA and SCTs constructs for detecting group difference. Results: The interaction effect between different groups (EAMS only and EAMS-SCT) on the participants' score on IPAQ, across three times of measurement (pre-intervention, post-intervention and 4-week follow-up) was significant. The mean IPAQ MET scores of participants in both groups (EAMS only, from 957.64 to 1235.82, EAMS-SCT group from 883.49 to 1420.86) increased and statistically significant difference from its scores than that of the pre-intervention. However, there was no statistically significant difference in IPAQ MET scores between the groups. There was a statistically significant multivariate effect of SCT constructs across the interaction between the groups and time of measurement: F (6, 57) = 7.267, p = .000, with large effect size. Post-hoc analysis revealed that the score of exercise self-efficacy, social support for exercise and physical activity self-regulation from pre- intervention to post-intervention were significantly higher in the EAMS-SCT group. There was no significant difference in the score of physical activity self-regulation between the EAMS only group and the EAMS-SCT group. Meanwhile, there was a significant mean difference in exercise self-efficacy and social support for exercise at Week 8 and social support for exercise at Week 12 between EAMS only and EAMS- SCT group. Conclusion: The participants in the EAMS-SCT group show a significant increase in physical activity level and all three related SCT constructs. Both the EAMS only and the EAMS-SCT groups have an increase in the IPAQ MET score and the score of the scale of physical activity self-regulation after the 8-week intervention. Participants in the EAMS-SCT group exhibit higher scores in the scales of exercise self-efficacy and social support for exercise than participants in the EAMS only group after the 8-week intervention.

Abstract:
The thesis aims at building mathematical models to study the dynamics of pneumococcal strains transmission in the community. The phenomenon of emergence and diffusion of resistant bacteria in populations involve microbial, individual and population scales simultaneously. That makes them complex and difficult to anticipate. In that context, modelling, which allows formalisation and simulation of the different scales, can help in analysing, predicting and understanding better the spread of bacteria. Three main issues are raised. What would be the impact of antibiotic exposure changes on resistances distributions? What would be the effects induced by the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on the distribution of strains? Do viral respiratory infections and antibiotic consumption play a role in pneumococcal meningitis infections? Four compartmental models are developed to answer these questions. The results of our simulations reinforce the idea that antibiotic exposure is a major factor in the selection of antibiotic resistant bacteria. More precisely, they show that the choices of prescribed drugs and doses at the individual level could have a strong impact on the distributions of resistances in the community. Moreover, our results suggest that respiratory viruses, antibiotic consumption and resistance associated-fitness could explain part of the dynamics of pneumococcal meningitis in the community

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: The PRECEDE-PROCEED Model is an effective and adaptable program planning tool that has been widely used in the design, implementation and evaluation of health promotion programs. Objective: To retrospectively apply the constructs of the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model to a community-based youth fitness and nutrition summer camp program (Champ Camp) and to identify and describe how the program can be improved based on the findings of the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model evaluation. Design: A systematic application of the nine phases of the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model applied retrospectively to evaluate and improve the Champ Camp program. Setting: Children participating in Champ Camp offered through a seven-week summer camp coordinated by Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront of Burlington, Vermont. The summer camp served as a licensed childcare program for children entering first through fifth grade. Measures: Improvements in nutrition knowledge and fitness scores measured biweekly. Additionally, the retrospective application of the planning model determined valuable demographic, behavioral, environmental, and policy information about the community. Statistical Analysis: A repeated measures analysis of variance was conducted to determine if there was a statistically significant change over time in nutrition knowledge and physical fitness. Statistical analysis was also performed to determine if there were potential correlations between nutrition knowledge and performance on each fitness assessment individually. Results: The Champ Camp program significantly improved nutrition assessment scores for males. Additionally, there were statistically significant improvements in the fitness assessment scores for the ball throw within third through fifth grade males and females across the seven-week program. The retrospective application of the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model proved to be successful in identifying the demographic, behavioral and environmental influences, and resources and invested parties of the target population. Most importantly the model emphasized the use of SMART program goals and objectives within successful health promotion programs. The model also stressed the necessity for appropriate and validated nutrition and fitness assessment tools that would offer more generalizable data. Moreover, the model also emphasized the need for stronger program evaluation by including more process evaluative measures and defining the determinants in which the programs' effectiveness and efficiency would be measured. Conclusions: The unique application proved to be a valuable and fruitful method for evaluating and identifying areas for improvement within a community-based youth fitness and nutrition summer camp program. This research not only serves to improve the existing Champ Camp program but to highlight the importance of program planning models and the critical components of successful health promotion programs.

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to develop a design concept to manage this large amount of health data, with the help of concept-driven design research. The goal of the concept is to create an opportunity for individuals to manage and access their generated health data, in order to use it for something meaningful.  With the aid of a methodological guide, the concept has been developed, to create theoretically anchored qualities and to compile them into a concept in the form of a model. To get external criticism of the concept, ten users were involved, which in turn led to revision and contextualisation of HealthLab. In the result, a final concept model is presented of HealthLab. The concept will serve as a multiplatform whose purpose is to collect external health data so that users can get several aspects of their training, which in turn will contribute to a better training experience. The final result of HealthLab is intended to be a vision for the future to guide and awaken new ways of thinking among researchers and designers.

Abstract:
A rule context in the field of environmental impact assessment of anthropogenic chemicals and specifically ecotoxicological risk to the aquatic environment, requires strengthening the assessment tools and refine knowledge of their predictive value. As such, the study of biomarkers of genotoxicity should be choose, given the central role of DNA in living organisms function and trans-generational effects could lead to a genetic load affecting populations exposed to a contaminated environment . In this context, and after defining the problem at the end of a literature review, this thesis has developed a biomarker of genotoxicity in the stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), model species in ecotoxicology, using the measurement primary DNA damage by the comet assay under alkaline conditions. It aimed to: i) provide additional information in a battery of biomarkers used in biomonitoring in this species, 2) provide some understanding of the predictive value of a genotoxic effect on the germinal tissue of aquatic organisms exposed to chemical stress. On the first point, the results underline the importance of this biomarker of genotoxicity developed on blood tissue in the laboratory, its high sensitivity leading to a significant discriminating power under multiparameter approaches taken in a second time on the ground. Regarding the study of the ecotoxicological significance of this biomarker of genotoxicity, the aim was to explore the relationship between DNA integrity in germ cells of the fish and the quality of the offspring. The results of this work show an original way the majority of the paternal genome contribution to the transmission of a deleterious genetic information that result in abnormal survival and development measured on the offspring. They allow you to have a predictive element relevant evaluation of the effect of genotoxic potential contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, in a context of growing interest in understanding the decline of fish populations identified universally

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of participation in a single sport small-sided games (SSG) programme compared to a multi-sport SSG programme on the physical fitness, gross motor coordination, soccer skills and application of tactics during soccer games of grade four children from a disadvantaged community. Two intact classes of boys and girls (n= 39 and n=40) participated in a six-week, 2x per week intervention programme. One class specialized in soccer and the other engaged in a diversified programme where they sampled hockey and team handball along with soccer. In terms of pedagogy, both classes followed a deliberate play model with its focus on intrinsic learning and non-intervention by a coach. Data were collected during pre-, post- and retention test periods. Both boys’ groups achieved significant improvements in their muscle endurance-push-ups, power and aerobic endurance on the retention test. Only the boys who participated in the multi-sport SSG programme achieved a significant improvement on their muscle endurance-sit-ups. The girls from both groups showed significant improvements in all physical fitness variables, with the exception of the girls in the muti-sport programme who did not achieve a significant improvement in their speed. Significant improvements were experienced by all groups for gross motor coordination and soccer skills. The boys in the soccer SSG programme demonstrated improvements in both offensive and defensive tactics while the boys in the multi-sport SSG programme improved in the application of their defensive tactics only. The girls who participated in the soccer SSG programme also improved in their defensive tactics while the girls who participated in the multi-sport SSG programme achieved improvements in their application of both offensive and defensive tactics. The results of this study support proponents of the Developmental Model of Sport Participation as presented in current sport pedagogy literature, who claim that the physical and tactical benefits pre-pubescent children derive from participation in a diversified games programme will be similar to those benefits derived from participation in a specialized sport-specific game programme, providing the sports involved are late specialization sports. These results support the conclusion that it is not necessary for pre-pubescent children to specialize in a late specialization sport such as soccer in order to progress in their ability to play soccer. They can make similar progress if they participate in a diversified games programme that provides them with a broader experience with sports that have similar physical and tactical requirements.

Abstract:
Physical activity (PA) (30 minutes of accumulated moderate intensity PA on most days) can protect against and enhance physical and mental ill-health. Despite this, 60% to 75% of the Scottish population do not meet the current PA recommendations. Those living in socially and economically deprived communities are particularly susceptible to chronic diseases related to sedentary lifestyles. Three studies were conducted as part of this research. Study One - Aim: To develop a reliable, valid, self-assessing, British, 7-day recall measure of occupational and leisure PA. Study Two - Aim: To pilot the procedures necessary to conduct the main study. Study Three - Aim: To assess the effects of a fitness assessment compared to a control intervention and an exercise consultation compared to a control intervention on PA, SOC and POC over 1 year in a community population high in social and economic deprivation. Methodology Three thousand residents of 2 socially and economically deprived communities were invited to volunteer for a fitness assessment or exercise consultation. Fitness assessment volunteers were randomly assigned into an experimental or control group (receiving PA information only) as were exercise consultation volunteers. This produced 4 groups; fitness assessment experimental (FAE, N=112) and control (FAC, N=113) and exercise consultation experimental (ECE, N=73) and control (ECC, N=72). Results For those not regularly active (contemplators and preparers), leisure PA initially increased and was maintained to 6 months before falling at 1 year post test. There were few group differences. Only the ECE group reported significantly higher levels of leisure PA at 1 year compared to baseline. SOC mirrored PA, with baseline contemplators and preparers mostly progressing into action, maintaining this to 6 months before regressing back to baseline SOC at 1 year for those not regularly active at baseline. Exercise consultations offered the best chance of study adherence and long-term SOC maintenance.

Abstract:

As the rising awareness of national health, the number of people who do exercises and work out increases year after year. The rapid development of sports and fitness industries leads to competition among them. To enhance their competitiveness, the industries must continuously expand, transform and promote their Competence Set, to effectively solve the problems and encounter the challenges. Mobile applications are extensively used nowadays; If they could have combinations with sports and fitness industries, perhaps this innovative change could catch consumers’ attention and even meet their needs. By Competence Set Analysis, this research aims to investigate what consumers’ needs for fitness applications are and the relationship between the applications and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This research adopts the way of online questionnaire. The respondents are people who keep a habit of exercise and gym trainers. Except for invalid responses, there are 282 adoptable responses, from all 314 responses in total. The result of the questionnaires indicates that consumers reckon that fitness applications should have 7 functions. Particularly, they think that the function of sports and health record is the most significant. According to related analysis, the correlation coefficient between “convenience” and “perceived usefulness” is 0.846; the correlation coefficient between “attitude” and “intentions” is 0.826. That is, both statistics illustrate high-positive correlation. Also, regression analysis reveals that “entertainment” and “sense of identity” have influence on fitness applications. Through Competence Set Analysis, we can know what functions fitness applications should have; besides, by the analysis of TAM, we can know more clearly what consumers’ needs are. To satisfy fitness trainers and the public demand for fitness apps, it’s possible to develop a fitness app in the future which presents different function pages by creating a function of targeting at different identity login. The result of this research could be taken as reference not only for developing fitness applications also another new product. When research and development has encountered difficulties in the future, they can make good use of Competence Set,thorough intopotential domains to promote their Competence Set, to effectively solve the problems and encounter the challenges, and created more economic value of better and more effective.

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) means to detect human pulse waveform and to estimate the heart rate in a non-contact way by means of a digital camera. Human cardiac activity causes periodic physiological signals in the human body, e.g., the blood volume fluctuation in the micro vessels beneath the skin, leading to the absorbance changes of the incident light. rPPG then extracts this physiological signal by analyzing the pixel intensity variations within the skin region. The major challenges of this technique so far include illumination changes and motion interference. In the past two decades, researchers have proposed numerous approaches to deal with these challenges and have found significant success in various applications such as telemedicine, face detection, sleep monitoring, etc. This thesis first addresses the relationship between pulse extraction and video compression, and then deals with its application to the fitness exercise. First, an algorithm is proposed to extract pulse waveform on the compressed video. Based on the analysis of the impact of popular video compression methods on the rPPG measurements, a single-channel pulse extraction approach is proposed to compensate for the quality loss of rPPG signal induced by the video compression methods. Second, a physiological signal preserving compression method is proposed such that existing rPPG extraction algorithms can be applied directly on the compressed video without modification and equivalent results can be achieved. Finally, we address the problem of extracting heart rate when the subject is performing fitness training. Furthermore, a novel concept of heart rate feedback control is proposed to promote the efficiency of the training. The proposed algorithms have been validated on several self-established dataset. A prototype hardware system based on modified treadmill is established to support the concept of heart rate feedback control. This thesis exploits the knowledge of rPPG technique with respect to video compression and contributes to the application of extracting heart rate during fitness exercise. The author hopes to provide some insights to the subsequent researchers in this field.

Abstract:
In this paper we present general results on aggregation of variables, specifically as it applies to decomposable (partitionable) dynamical systems. We show that a particular class of transition matrices, namely, those satisfying an equitable partitioning property, are aggregable under appropriate decomposition operators. It is also shown that equitable partitions have a natural application to the description of mutation-selection matrices (fitness landscapes) when their fitness functions have certain symmetries concordant with the neighborhood relationships in the underlying configuration space. We propose that the aggregate variable descriptions of mutation-selection systems offer a potential formal definition of units of selection and evolution.

Abstract:

Understanding the protein fitness landscape is important for describing how natural proteins evolve and for engineering new proteins with useful properties. This mapping from protein sequence to protein function involves an extraordinarily complex balance of numerous physical interactions, many of which are still not well understood. Directed evolution circumvents our ignorance of how a protein’s sequence encodes its function by using iterative rounds of random mutation and artificial selection. The selection criteria is based on experimental measurements, which permits the optimization of protein sequence properties that are not understood. While directed evolution has been useful for exploring protein fitness landscapes, these searches have been relatively local in comparison to the vast space of possible protein sequences. Here, we present several classes of statistical models that map protein sequence space on a larger scale. We use these simple models to interpret data from SCHEMA recombination libraries, understand the evolutionary benefit of intragenic recombination, and design optimized protein sequences. By training on directly on experimental data, these models implicitly capture the numerous and possibly unknown factors that shape the protein fitness landscape. This provides an unrivaled quantitative accuracy across a massive number of protein sequences.

Semmer, Mollie Elizabeth. "Mobile applications for weight loss: a guide for use in the primary care setting." Thesis, 2017. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/26941.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Seven out of every 10 adults in the United States can benefit from weight loss. Overweight and obesity have emerged at the forefront of public health concerns and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Primary care providers have the opportunity to identify overweight/obese patients and initiate weight loss efforts with an efficacious treatment plan that addresses individual challenges and barriers. Modest weight loss of 5-10% can be achieved with referral to a high-intensity, on-site, comprehensive lifestyle intervention program. However, most overweight/obese patients do not enroll in these programs; thus, there is a significant demand for alternative weight loss strategies. Providers can help patients individualize and apply the 3 evidence-based components of lifestyle intervention (reduced calorie diet, increased physical activity, and behavior modification) to create a plan that defines weight loss goals, dietary and physical activity targets, and behavior change strategies. LITERATURE REVIEW: mHealth applications show promise for augmenting weight loss efforts, likely by facilitating behavior change strategies such as self-monitoring. High-quality data is lacking to define the precise role of mHealth apps in weight loss, but a limited number of studies report significant app features and average frequency of use associated with weight loss. PROPOSED PROJECT: Preliminary evidence-based recommendations advise patients to use an mHealth app to log dinner and 1 other meal every day, log all minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and log body weight 2-3 times per week. Wearable sensors can be used to enhance user experience, but should not substitute for manually logging physical activity. Patients should monitor their caloric intake, minutes of physical activity, and body weight frequently with reference to their goals and prescribed recommendations. CONCLUSION & SIGNIFICANCE: Overweight/obesity is a disease that demands attention from the medical profession due to the high prevalence and associated morbidity and mortality. Primary care providers can begin to address the obesity epidemic by propagating patient weight loss efforts. Clinically significant weight loss can be accomplished with lifestyle modification, so providers should be encouraged to prescribe evidence-based lifestyle recommendations for reduced caloric intake, increased physical activity, and behavior change strategies. Patients can actively engage with these recommendations by using an mHealth app with guidance from their providers. Employing pragmatic lifestyle interventions that incorporate evidence-based strategies and encourage longevity may decrease the prevalence of overweight/obesity and its’ associated chronic conditions.

Abstract:
Due to low birth rates and rising life expectancy, the population of developed countries is aging. Concurrently, physical inactivity is an identified major health risk and significantly more prevalent in older adults, who experience the consequences related to inactivity more frequently. Exergames for the elderly are an affordable option to prevent sedentarism and complement traditional exercise training, which can otherwise suffer from low adherence and personalization. They facilitate moderate-intensity physical activity levels and positively impact fitness, health, balance, postural control, mobility, and motivation. However, due to the lack of knowledge of seniors’ game preferences and technology literacy, there are challenges in designing exergames that match the users’ needs and motivators with game elements. While there is an extensive body of research in this field, there are critical gaps: most of the research is done in laboratory environments, is focused on balance and ignore other motor performance domains, use commercial games which are not designed for older adults, and fail to explore the longitudinal effects of exergames. In this thesis, there are three sequential contributions: 1) Develop a technology to facilitate exergaming in the elderly population by integrating easy-to-use full body interaction with large projection displays. Resulting in software for low-cost virtual reality surround screen projection systems, validated through user studies and compared with the conventional alternatives. 2) Leverage the technology and design customized exergames to promote fitness in older adults by: a) Evaluate the capability to automate fitness assessment using gesture detectors by testing their performance in the field with 22 elderly end-users and compare it to traditional methods administered by an expert. Resulting in a high accuracy system, consistent with the traditional fitness assessment method. b) Study older adults’ interaction preferences with floor projection displays by developing and testing two natural user interfaces with 19 elderly participants. The participants’ preference for a feet controlled interface was identified when usability, perceived workload, and performance indicators were assessed. c) Apply human-centered design methodologies in the gamification of fitness training routines by focusing on insights from inquiries to improve game elements and game iterations based on playtesting sessions to produce exergames. Resulting in a set of four exergames created to train the critical functional fitness areas of older adults. 3) Measure the benefits in older adults’ motor performance, quality of life, and physical activity levels during a longitudinal multidimensional training combining custom-made exergames and traditional exercise in a complementary fashion. Achieved through a 12-week long randomized controlled trial of bi-weekly exercise sessions with 31 elderly participants. Outcome measures on fitness, balance, and health-related quality of life were measured at the start, during, and after the intervention, and physical activity levels were measured at each session. This resulted in exergame players having a significant increase in strength compared to control, and both conditions improving balance and the mental component of health-related quality of life, with improvements in the latter being greater for exergame players. Additionally, during exergames’ sessions, participants spent less energy but maintained the recommended physical activity levels for more extended periods. Our results show that integrating personalized exergames designed for multidimensional fitness training in traditional settings can effectively enhance older adults’ motor performance and mental well-being. This technology is a viable low-cost option to be deployed in the context of elderly fitness programs.

Nowadays, the concern of personal physical function and health is getting higher and higher, which driving the nation sport industry simultaneously. Beside some of well-known outdoor sports like jogging, cycling… etc. Weight training has become one of the main exercise selections for some people. To achieve the goals of body shaping, physical fitness and healthy improvement, training continuously is necessary. However, interior factors and exterior factors may lead to expectation unachieved, or even lead to physical damage. Interior factors could be lack of weight training knowledges, improper information received;Exterior factors could be that it’s hard for trainer to monitor their posture during training correctly, and other exterior factor like improper coaching. All that factors could cause mistakes, or even unexpected accidents while training. One of the most common mistakes is weight distribution asymmetry. This will cause the balance of bilateral growth and strength be damaged. To minimize the percentage of accidents happened, self-monitoring is essential in training routine. Therefore, this study committed to apply several digital components to develop a self-monitoring prototype for trainer to monitor posture by themselves. This prototype will detect force value, which trainer presses on fitness equipment, or the force pressed on human body by equipment, then analyze bilateral pressure difference and show out the final result to trainer by LED as an adjustment indication.

Enterprises are in response to changes in today''s business environment, real-time response to customer requirement and they improve overall operating efficiency, one after another into ERP systems. However, the design of large-scale ERP systems are extremely complex, often need to implement these ERP time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, the implementation of ERP systems must be the long-term strategy for consideration, and must be a planned and proper ways to implement. Among the many large-scale ERP developers, SAP software is one of well-known. Most of these software emphasize on modular approach, and built the so-called business best processes. The processes build enterprise reference model of operating activities. Enterprises can implement the best of these so-called processes in accordance with the demand. However, according to past studies have shown that there have a number of reasons can’t improve business performance after implementing the ERP system, and even fail to final project to implement. The important reason is that the operational activities of the enterprises can’t fit functions provided by ERP systems. Some scholars address methodologies to assess fitness between ERP system and target enterprise, and to implement the SAP for the case Note. Past study also mentioned, in addition to systems and functions can’t match, the organization issue is an important factor in the success of the information project. This research is based on past research that developed a methodology of SAP solution with appropriate analysis methods. In addition to the objectives, processes and data outputs and the degree of fitness of the past study take into account, the Organization issues will also be included in the considerations. In the factors of organization, we consider employees’ management concepts, information capacity and the degree of resistance to assess the future resistance that may arise. Finally, this article operates a real case from hospital that can provide the feasibility of the study.

The research design was to investigate the “Application of Flying Puly on Elderly Outdoor Resistance Fitness Equipment”, targeting the senior population, where such fitness equipment is placed in public places, such as parks. To effectively exercise the muscles and bones in human body to prevent deterioration in skeletal muscles and bone density due to aging, a continuous variable transmission system was used, since there was no speed limit ratio and it could allow user to manually adjust accordingly to need. The resistance came from non-contact magnetic force, which was mainly considering the cost of frictional wear. In the experiment, the combination of parameters of the continuous variable transmission system for elderly exercise was: Ply-disc with long bullet-shaped pulley balls of pure lead weight and the variable spring with the minimum spring coefficient of 0.12 kg/cm at a wheelbase of 25 cm, measuring the minimum speed of output shaft of the CVT system at 413 rpm. The speed of the bicycle when stepped upon by human is generally between 33 rpm and 80 rpm. Considering the low speed upon stepping that the CVT system may even lose its momentum, a combination of increasing speed gear at ratio 1:12 was added in the system. The experimental result of system with and without magnetic force as resistance showed that the output shaft speed of CVT without resistance was 460 rpm, while it was 706 rpm for CVT with magnetic force as resistance, yielding a difference of 246 rpm. In the fixed-speed test, the operational balance point speed without additional magnetic resistance was 1133 rpm and 1223 rpm for system with magnetic force as resistance. The Ply-disc exercise system in this study was matched with various parameters and applied with magnetic force as the source of resistance to test and present the trend graphs of its action at each operational point, at each operational point in balance and at the highest rotational speed. By adding an incremental mechanism for treading at low speed by the user, the magnetic force would increase to produce more resistance as speed increased to allow a progressive increase in exercise.
