Corriere, Mauro. "Effects of okadaic acid and dinophysistoxins on swimming and metabolic fitness of marine fish." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2019. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/18164/.

Full text
Abstract:
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are natural occurrences that can severely impact marine communities. Depending on the species, they can produce a wide array of toxins, which may elicit devastating effects on marine life. Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) is a specific type of food poisoning, characterized by severe gastrointestinal illness due to the ingestion of filter feeding bivalves contaminated with a specific suite of toxins such as okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxins (DTXs). OA and DTXs are lipophilic and heat-stable compounds that frequently accumulate in bivalve mollusks along European coasts. It is established that organisms such as bivalves accumulate these toxins in their tissues, mostly in the digestive gland, through their filter feeding behavior acting therefore as a vectors for other organisms such as planktivorous fish. Here, for the first time, the time course of accumulation and elimination of Diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) in juveniles of Zebra seabream (Diplodus cervinus) was assessed during an experimental period of 15 days. It was shown that fish present a high excretion rate and low toxin conversion, in fact no other compounds except for DTX-1 were found. Then fish aerobic metabolism and swimming performance were investigated, exposing individuals to OA group of toxins via dietary route during 3 days, after which fish were challenged with increasing swimming velocity trials using a swim tunnel respirometer. Results show that OA impaired on metabolic performance, assessed both during the standard metabolic rate (SMR) and during the maximum metabolic rate (MMR) as an oxygen consumption increment. Moreover, from critical swimming speed (Ucrit) analysis, significant differences among the two tested groups were observed. In conclusion, these studies show that fish can act temporary as a vector and, although a high elimination rate was found, at the same time toxins ingestion was able to impair their fitness.

Indiana, Arnaud. Thesis, Angers, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014ANGE0009/document.

Full text
Abstract:
During the early stages of the infection, pathogenic bacteria such as Xcc must detect favorable sites and ingress into host plant tissues to colonize and multiply in the apoplast or the xylem vessels. Chemotaxis is the mechanism used by bacteria to detect attractants and repellents and adapt in consequence its direction. The aim of this work is to understand the roles of chemotaxis and flagellar motility in the fitness of xanthomonads. We showed that flagellar motility is not a general feature of xanthomonads. About 5 % of tested strains lost this ability without major impact on their fitness in planta. A chemotaxis sensor, named Hsb1, probably acquired by horizontal transfer shows a group of alleles that are specific of X. campestris. In Xcc ATCC 33913, a mutation in hsb1 resulted in a decreased penetration of this strain in the host plant tissues combined with an increase penetration in the non-host plant tissues. Hsb1 sense a signal from wounds of cabbage leaves. In vitro, a glucosinolate, the sinigrin, and an amino acid, the L-phenylalanine are detected by Hsb1 but are not metabolized. Further work is needed to identify the signal detected by the sensor and to design control methods based on confusion

Shulika, Kateryna. "The significance of swimming skills in Sweden : An analysis of Swedish Physical Education syllabi in regard to swimming ability in compulsory and upper secondary schools." Thesis, Örebro universitet, Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:oru:diva-94325.

Abstract:
Introduction: In Sweden, it is vital that children acquire swimming ability at an early age because of the easy access to the sea, rivers, lakes, and swimming pools. Swimming ability is a life skill necessary for conducting outdoor life safely and using nature as an arena for recreation both near and in the water. Therefore, over the past century, swimming and water safety have been an essential part of the Swedish Physical Education (PE) subject to increase the likelihood that students will be able to save themselves and others from drowning. Aims: The aim of this investigation is to provide a greater understanding of the ways in which swimming ability has been described in Swedish PE syllabi for compulsory and upper secondary schools from 1962 to 2020.  Materials and methods: Discourse analysis (DA) has been used to analyze the Swedish PE syllabi from 1962 to 2020. Theoretical framework: This study is inspired in a Foucauldian genealogy perspective.  Results: Two main result categories were constructed from the analysis. (a) Swimming education has been present in all PE syllabi for compulsory school since 1962. These syllabi note that outdoor life, lifesaving, and swimming skills overlap and reinforce one another and suggest that swimming is an important part of Swedish culture. However, since 1994, the Physical Education and Health (PEH) syllabus for upper secondary school omits swimming skills from its content. (b) Swimming ability has a prominent position in the most recent (2011) PEH syllabus for elementary schools. Nevertheless, it is excluded from the 2011 PEH syllabus for upper secondary schools.Discussion Even though swimming ability is vital for safely conducting outdoor life and using nature as an arena for physical activity, as shown in the latest PEH syllabus, it has been excluded from current upper secondary education. Conclusion: The exclusion of swimming ability from upper secondary school syllabi may mean that some students, such as newly arrived students who migrate to Sweden, are denied opportunities to learn to swim and be safe close to and in the water.

Abstract:
Aim The aim of this study is to form a descriptive picture of Swedish national elite (SNLE) swimmers blood glucose (BG) levels in relation to their nutritional intake.  - Do SNLE swimmers have BG level in a normal range of ≥3.9 mmol/L when measured during a six-day period? - Is there a relationship between the SNLE swimmers blood glucose levels and how often or when they eat, and how they perceive their workout effort? Method Four test subjects, three females and one male, were recruited based on their competitive level, National Championship qualifying cut, geographical location, in Stockholm, and amount of swimming workouts completed weekly, seven on average. The test subjects wore a Continuous Glucose Monitor for a week and in addition a brief meal journal and perceived effort (ranking) of each workout was recorded. The data gathered was analyzed based on three main variables; time spent LOW (blood glucose level below 3.9mmol/L), amount of meals, and ranking. Results This study found that three out of four test subjects had occurrences of a LOW during the week. The test subjects spent on average 1.75 ±1.26 days with a LOW, the average time spent with a LOW per day was 37.3 ±29.7 minutes, the average amount during the whole week was 224 ±177 minutes, and the percent of the whole week spent with a LOW was 2.59 ±0.02%. In addition to this a correlation was found between (total) time spent LOW and (total) amount of meals with an R-value of 0.99, an R2 of 0.979, and P-value of 0.044. Conclusions The results showed that three test subjects spent time with a LOW and indicates similar results should be found in the general population of SNLE swimmers, however, this is definitely in need of further research. The results also indicated that there is a relationship between the amount of meals ingested and the BG level over the full six-day period but not on a daily basis. A regression analysis between (total) time spent LOW and (total) number of meals showed correlations with statistical significance, however, there was too small of a data sample (N=4) to draw conclusions based from this. This study forms a descriptive picture of the situation, which could serve as a platform for further research in this field, and give a first glance at the possible potential use of CGM systems within the sports nutrition field.

Eriksson, Madeleine. "The effect of Post activation potentiation on triceps brachii and latissimus dorsi on the aerobic performance of elite freestyle swimmers."

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Competitive swimming is a sport that require high muscle strength to overcome the forces in the water. A phenomenon called post activation potentiation (PAP) is known to acutely increase power output. PAP can be defined as an increase in muscle performance after muscle contraction. Previous research on PAP has shown positive effects on different sports, including swimming. However, a limited amount of studies exists on PAP associated with swimming and distances longer than 100 meters. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate if PAP for triceps brachii and latissimus dorsi with elastic bands can improve the aerobic performance, V4-speed, of elite freestyle swimmers. Methods: 13 elite swimmers participated in this study (mean ±SD: age 18 ±1.15). The participants performed three test sessions on two different days. The first occasion evaluated aerobic performance, V4-speed, where the participants performed a 400-m freestyle swim race and lactate and time were collected. At the second occasion, a 10-repetition maximum (RM) elastic resistance band test was done to get the right resistance band for each individual participant for the PAP exercise. At the third occasion, a PAP exercise, that mimics freestyle swim, with elastic resistance band was performed with 10 repetitions in two sets. After, a rest of six minutes was performed and then the same 400-m freestyle swim test as the first occasion. A paired samples t-test was used to evaluate significant differences between the swim test performed with and without a PAP exercise. Results: The study showed no statistical difference between the V4-speed with or without PAP exercise (p=0.93). An increase in lactate was seen after the PAP exercise (p=0.02). Conclusion: This study could not ensure an improvement of the aerobic performance, V4-speed, of elite swimmers when a PAP exercise, similar to a freestyle stroke, was performed before a 400-m submaximal freestyle swim race with elastic resistance band. Further research must be done in this area before coaches and athletes can apply this in training programs.

Abstract:
Aim The aim of this study was to ascertain the effect of resisted sprint training in swimming on maximal swimming velocity and performance characteristics. The aim was also to examine how maximal swimming velocity is related to maximal swim power and maximal dry-land power. Method Eighteen competitive national level swimmers (9 male and 9 female; age: 18.3 ± 2.3 years, body mass: 72 ± 8.3 kg, height: 177.2 ± 4.6 cm, mean ± SD) were recruited to this study. Subjects were assigned to either resisted sprint training (RST) or unresisted sprint training (UST). Sprint training was performed two times per week during 6 weeks as 8x15m with a 2min send-off interval. RST performed sprint training using individualized load corresponding 10% of maximum drag load (L10), UST performed sprint training with no added resistance. A test-battery including dry-land strength assessment; maximal strength (MxS) and explosive strength (ExS), a timed 25m front-crawl swim and in-water force-velocity profiling was performed prior and following the training intervention. Maximal swim power (Pmax), maximum drag load (F0), theoretical maximum velocity (v0) and slope of force-velocity curve (SFv) was computed though force-velocity profiling. Results No significant within group differences occurred in neither RST nor UST following the 6-week intervention period in: swimming velocity, MxS, ExS, Pmax, F0, v0, and SFv. Strong correlations were found between swimming velocity and MxS (r = 0.75), ExS (r =0.82) and Pmax (r = 0.92). Conclusion Resisted sprint training in swimming using L10 did in the present study not elicit any improvements in maximal swimming velocity or examined performance characteristics. Resisted sprint training does not appear to be a superior method of improving swimming performance compared to unresisted sprint training. MxS, ExS and Pmax can be used as robust predictors of swim performance, however only Pmax was found to be casually related to swimming velocity.

Vaičaitis, Ignas. "Sport migration in a Global World: A Case study of Lithuanian Swimmers migration to the United States." Thesis, Malmö universitet, Malmö högskola, Institutionen Idrottsvetenskap (IDV), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-43266.

Abstract:
In this master's thesis, I studied the migration of Lithuanian swimmers to the United States. This study covered the period from 1990 when Lithuania regained its independence from the Soviet Union to 2004 when it joined the European Union and opened up to the free labor market movement.  In the 20th century, sports activity grew into a global and multi-billion-dollar industry. Currently, research into the sports migration process is becoming increasingly important in the scientific discourse of sports science. However, it is still a relatively rare occurrence.  Various research and insights into this phenomenon can only be discovered in the context of professional sports such as football, basketball, hockey, rugby, and other popular sports. However, in the area of non-revenue sports, migration is a relatively unexplored area. In this way, my master's study analyzing migration in swimming will be one of the first steps in further research. This master's study tried to fill the gap in the academic discourse by deepening and gaining data on the narrow field of Lithuanian swimmers. As swimming is not a commercially successful sport, the United States was the only destination to migrate for Lithuanian swimmers. Research by Bale (1991) showed that the one main reason for the migration of international student-athletes to American universities is academic sports scholarships, which provide free participation in sports and higher education. This study will help strengthen prior findings and unveil other factors and reasons affecting the migration of international students to U.S. universities. The findings of this study contributed to a deeper understanding of the situation and motivation of migrants athletes in non-revenue sports. The study results also provide insights and context for a better understanding of the reasons for migration from the small post-Soviet country. The research showed that most Lithuanian swimmers recognized better conditions to improve abroad than in Lithuania. The quality of most of their sports training conditions was poor or insufficient. The recruitment process and contacts played an essential role in establishing connections with university coaches; only after establishing relationships with coaches in America, Lithuanian swimmers opened their way to the United States.  The study utilized a qualitative case study methodology, including twelve semi-structured interviews. Eight interviews were done with swimmers who went to the United States to compete in sports and receive education, and four interviews were done with athletes who remained to develop their talents in Lithuania. All the interviews were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. This master's thesis applied world-systems theory (Wallerstein, 1974) as a framework for exploring and understanding the experiences and motivations of research participants from their experienced perspective.

Abstract:

It is characterised as a descriptive cross sectional study. The sample was composed of 119 swimmers (males) that were divided among the stages of sexual maturation, from 7 to 17,9 years of age. They were associated to a local federation, the Confedera??o Brasileira de Desportes Aqu?ticos. The tests used were: genetic markers dermatoglyphics; Anthropometry body mass, stature, arm span, fat percentage and somatotype; physical qualities speed tests (25 meters crawl), strength (vertical jump) to inferior limbs, verarm throwing arremesso of a 2kg medicineball to superior limbs and abdominal), resistence (12 minutes to swimming), agility (he multistage 20-meter shuttle run test), flexibility (sit and reach test ) and coodination (stroke index); power of swimming (mean velocity in 25 meters mutiplied by body mass) and the self assessment of the sexual maturation supervised by a pediatric specialist. In the analyses we used the test normality of Shapiro-Wilk, then, we used ANOVA- one way followed by Post-Hoc test of Scheff?. The data showed in dermatogliphics a genetic tendence to velocity (L>W) with a predominance of the meso-ectomorphic somatotype profile; in relation to the physical qualities there was an evolution of the results in every stage due to the antropometric variables, except in the coordination tests. There were no significative differences between the stages. We conclude that swimming in Para?ba is composed of a signicative number of velocists with a mesomorph somatotype profile and low fat percentage, and that made it posssible to us to recomend that the trainings must be individual and according to personal characteristics of each athlete, and that the used variables must be specific for every region of the country. There is no knowledge of aggression levels in these sports in a Swedish context. Method Quantitative method was used for data collection in the study and 66 questionnaires were distributed to men and women in swimming, thaiboxing and slalom skiing. A validated questionnaire, The Aggression Questionnaire (AQ), was translated into Swedish. The factors that were investigated in the questionnaire were verbal aggression, anger, hostility and physical aggression and the questionnaire included 29 statements. In total, 65 participants answered the questionnaire and the response rate was 98 %. Descriptive statistics were used to investigate differences in aggression levels, gender, age and sport. The age of the participants was divided into three categories, under 20, from 20-29 and over 30. Results The results showed that there were significant differences in aggression levels between the different sports. The aggression levels were highest in slalom and lowest in swimming. In addition, the results showed that there is a gender difference between women and men and men had higher aggression. In total, the men in slalom had the highest levels of aggression while the women in swimming had the lowest levels. The women in thaiboxing had the highest levels of aggression among all women. Finally, the results showed that the aggression levels were lowest among those over 30 years. Conclusions This study shows that there are differences in aggression levels among sports swimming, thaiboxing and slalom, and that there are gender differences. Men in slalom skiing had the highest levels of aggression while the women in swimming had the lowest. The conclusion is that in sports with high level of aggression it is beneficial to discuss and learn how to deal with the aggression.<br>Syfte och frågeställningar Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka om aggressionsnivån skiljer sig mellan de olika sporterna simning, thaiboxning och slalom.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine former elite swimmers experience of sports high school and understand the process of drop-out from the elite sport. To answer this question the study gathered data from twelve interviews with elite swimmers who were part of a sports high school but chose to drop out during high school or within two years after graduation. Furthermore, this is analyzed using two theoretical frameworks, Ebaugh's decision-making process and the push/pull/anti-push/anti-pull model. The results show that the swimmers experience of the sports high school is unique. Furthermore, it is emphasized that the decision-making process is started for reasons such as a change of coach, social reasons outside of sports, the pandemic covid-19 and reduced enthusiasm. During that time, the swimmers sought long-term alternatives through further studies or work. The decision to drop out then appears to be multifaceted and complex, with one to seven different factors together constituting the decision. These factors include: dissatisfaction with coaches; lack of development; performance anxiety; time consuming; social reasons in sport; illness; economic shortage in sports; decreased motivation; social reasons outside of sports; other priorities. After the dropout, the swimmers experience an identity crisis, whereupon it was easier to handle it with a focus outside of swimming and a planned drop-out. The study emphasizes a holistic view of the individual athlete, the community and the role of the coaches as valuable in the process of the decision.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Projektet har varit en övning i nya program för hur man projekterar arkitektur, samt loggar sin arbetsprocess.<br>Stockholm City needs to expand the capacity of their public baths and sports facilities. In addition, the renovation need is great for all bathhouses. The popular bath in Västertorp covers a large area but needs to be demolished due to its poor condition. Instead appartments will be built on the site and the bath will move to the southern tip of the park Mellanbergsparken to become a noise barrier between the highway (E4/E20) and the park that the city wants to start programming. The new bathhouse will be a nice end to the park and will also include two full-sized sport halls, fitness center and group training rooms hence the name "Sports Center". The sports center is thus divided into three volumes, consisting of the sport halls, a fitness part and the bath-house. The location of the center will have an increased availability through the highway and thus avoiding burdening the area's existing traffic. I have designed a new roundabout that will solve today's difficult traffic situation and reduce speed in the neighborhood. There are also two new bus stops in both directions. The site's existing swimming-pool should not be integrated into the plan as it is only used for three months during the year and should continue to remain with free entrance. Otherwise, the proposal is based on guidelines from the Sport Management department of the municipality. The function of the program has been shaping the outer volume. Analyses from the area has defined the project and the concept of the mesh facade is to represent water and speed. The facade has four basic ideas: to provide an exciting internal play of light, protect from the sun's direct rays, absorb the noise and become a spectacle for the cars on the highway day and night. The focus was to solve the program logistically while getting exciting aesthetic solutions in materials and light. In addition, there are solutions to how the bath house can be kept clean through easy design methods. The challenge was to fit all the functions on the relatively small plot. The project has been an exercise in new programs on how to project architecture, and logging the work process.

Abstract:
Mellanbergsparkens sydöstligaste del, invid E4:an, föreslås som tomtmark. In the valley between Västertorp and Hägerstensåsen in southern Stockholm you will find Mellanbergsparken. It is an elongated nature area with large natural variations in topography and landscape. The area is dominated by a tall and steep ridge, which runs along the park's northern side. The park's eastern part is bordered by the highly busy E4, which cuts right through the landscape creating a disturbing traffic barrier. Mellanbergsparken is a well-used park by the inhabitants of Hägersten. It works both as a recreational area, activity area and as commuter routes between the various districts. Today, most of the surface is undeveloped, and is aside from the football fields, mini golf course, outdoor swimmning pool and preschool almost untouched. A few dwellings have been built next to the metro station in Hägerstensåsen, which can be seen as an indication of future plans to develop the area. Västertorp's current swimming center, which is incorporated in the residential area, is timeworn and needs to be demolished. A new combined swimming and sports center will be built, which is planned to receive visitors from all the Hägersten area. Suggested location is the southeastern part of the park, next to the E4. The intention is to let the new sports and swimming center serve as a noise-canceling protection from the expressway since it is believed that a silencing can add value to the nature area. With my project I am strongly questioning the reasons for the sports and swimming center's placement and the benefit of allowing the building to act against noise. Instead, I am focusing on the interaction between building and park and what happens if one chooses to include urban elements - such as disturbing expressways - instead of cutting them off.

Abstract:
The theme of the dissertation titled the Centre of Sport and Leisure Time in Brno is a design of a relaxing and sport site „Centrum Lužánky“. The subject of this project is architectonic-city-planning study, which deals with elaborating a concept of a sport centre behind Lužánky in Brno-Ponava. This dissertation contains details of the facility and the area of the current swimming pool Lužánky. The current state of the facility built in 1979 doesn’t meet requirements of visitors and sportsmen anymore. The main aim of this project is the reconstruction of the current fifty-meter swimming pool, a design of a new swimming pool placed under the ground floor of the current building, which will provide space for organizing international competitions, trainings of professional sportsmen, etc. At the same time the busyness of the current swimming pools would be lowered by building a new indoor and outdoor waterpark, especially for the group of recreational visitors. The attractiveness of the facility will be increased by the newly designed park relaxing area and proposed multipurpose area, used as a sports field in the summer and as an ice ring in the winter. Additional value of the facility is comprised by an indoor and outdoor café and large relaxing area on the roof of the waterpark. The whole area increases the community facility availability by a proposed wide range of services for health, relax and sport. The advantage of the whole concept is the mutual connection of all facilities. The entrance to the area is shortened by a designed pedestrian bridge, accessible from the south and north busy areas. The whole project is enhanced by increased number of new parking places, located particularly along the access road, the street Sportovní, going through a green zone. The road and parking places are proposed in the design of residential streets, respecting walking pedestrians. The area has a very rich sport history, which is dated back to 1922. The experiment was intended for children (n=36) suffering from asthma stage 1 or stage 2, with age 8.84± 1.11 years, height 130.96 ± 9.31cm and weight 31.01 ± 9.37kg, who were divided into two 18-member groups, experimental group and control group, then allow children in former group to attend 8 week swimming training, while in contrast, those in control group neither to attend the training nor to engage in any exercises involving swimming. The subjects, the said asthmatic children, received physical fitness test, FEV1 test, and blood specimen analysis before and after receiving the swimming training and then all test data are subjected to 1-Way ANCOVA. The experiment results demonstrate the follows: 1. In Physical Fitness After having completed the 8-week swimming training, the asthmatic children demonstrate major difference (p<.05) in their Physical Fitness , excluding explosive strength. These reveal that an 8-week swimming training indeed enhances the BMI, flexibility, muscular endurance and cardio- respiratory endurance in the asthmatic children. 2. In Pulmonary Function and Respiratory Inflammatory Mediators After having completed the 8-week swimming training, the asthmatic children demonstrate significant difference only in FEV1, but not in the three blood biological values: eosinophil, IgE, and ECP. These indicate that an 8-week swimming training indeed improves largely the lung performance in the asthmatic children. 碩士<br>臺北巿立體育學院<br>運動科學研究所<br>91<br>The purpose of this study was to study the effect of regular swimming exercise on body composition, blood lipid, and physiological fitness in elder men. In total 40 subjects participated in the research, twenty of them were in the experiment group (average age: 53.35 ± 3.47) and the other twenty were in the control group (average age: 55.00 ± 3.09). The experiment subjects swim at least 3 times per week, for more than 3 years, and all subjects swim at least 30 minutes each time of exercise. Body compositions, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), strength, and flexibility were measured. Results indicated that total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol of the experiment group were significant lower than the control group. However, scapular fat, grip strength, and flexibility did not show significant difference between the experiment group and the control group. Data suggested that regular swimming exercise is beneficent on cardiopulmonary function and blood lipids. Swimming can improve living quality, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In conclusion, regular swimming exercises provide beneficial effect on cardiopulmonary function, which is very important to the elderly health. To build well fitness, elders should do several kinds of exercise regularly.

Abstract:
碩士<br>育達科技大學<br>資訊管理所<br>103<br>This research investigates the effect of physical fitness on swimming efficiency as reference for swimming instructions. The subjects are high school students who have yet to learn how to swimming. The purpose of this research is to identify the relationships between different physical fitness indicators and swimming ability. After compiling known physical fitness data and swimming performance scores, analysis with artificial neural network is used as a research method. Body mass index (BMI) is unsuitable and eliminated as an input variable; it is a standard range, unable to be representative of advantages or disadvantages. Four physical fitness indicators are inputs and swimming performance is the output in a predicative model with training results as control for comparison. The four indicators are tested by (1) ignoring a certain indicator (2) individual indicators adjusted by an increase or decrease of 10% or 20% and inputting each combination into the model (with only one indicator altered in each) and swimming performance as output. Training is done accordingly to find the indicator with the best correlation to swimming performance. Predicative model results indicate that within all the physical fitness indicators, cardiovascular fitness is most predicative of swimming performance. These results can be utilized in the next physical education courses to improve cardiovascular fitness of the students by at least 10% prior to the start of swimming courses. Their swimming scores along with fitness indicators can be inputted into the model and compared with predicted values. This research can prove that improving cardiovascular fitness can improve the efficiency of swimming lessons, such training can become widespread in school lessons by emphasizing cardiovascular training prior to swimming lessons. This can decrease the time required for students to learn how to swim and improve efficiency allowing more students to learn how to swim. This will achieve the Department of Education's goals of promoting swimming and physical fitness in its education policies. Keywords:Physical fitness, Swimming ability, Neural Network

碩士<br>國立臺灣體育學院<br>體育研究所<br>96<br>This research is studying the elderly physical fitness status, compare and find out the physical fitness difference relations of the elders who have exercise habits in the morning and who don’t have exercise habits. To compare the physical futness of different exercise habits in middle-aged, three groups of subjects were recruted: (A)The elders who have regular 30 mins swimming exercise at least 3 times per week for 3 years. (B)The elders who have regular morning exercises. At least 3 times morning exercises per week. (C)The elder who have not any exercise habits. The physical fitness status werer measured by body composition (body composition, muscle-resistant power, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness level, VO2max). The data were processed by descriptive statistics, chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, and compare with Sport Affair Council physical fitness norm patterns. The results were as follows: 1. The age distribution of three froups should be no significant difference. 2. The drerage “F value” testing in body mass index, sitting in the former bends (flexibility), one minute sit-ups (muscular endurance) exhibited no obviously difference. 3. With significant difference of agerage of “F value” testing in three minute-step test, the cardiopulmonary function index of A groups was much better than B & C groups. 4. With significant difference of agerage of “F value” testing in O2max test, the cardiopulmonary function index of A groups was much better than B & C groups. 5. There are positive correlation ship between three minute step test & the O2max test (r=.735;<.05). 6. With the reliability test of all physical fitness test items, post-test and pre-test are completely relevant. In conclusion, the cardiopulmonary functions of middle-aged people with swimming exercise at morning were better than with land exercise at morning.

Abstract:
碩士<br>真理大學<br>休閒遊憩事業學系碩士班<br>99<br>This study focuses on elementary school students who are engaged in sports associations of community activities to observe their physical fitness developments for six months. The hypothesis of this study is that students participating in community activities would change their physical fitness. In this study, there was one physical fitness test in the beginning of the semester and the second physical fitness test was performed after six months of continuous engagements, and comparison of the two physical fitness tests was made. Research purposes described as following: 1. To understand the students’ raw scores and percentile rankings of sit-bend, sit-ups, 800-meter run-away, standing-long-jump pre-test and post-test. 2. To understand the relationship between the frequencies of students’ participation of physical fitness and the progress. 3. To understand the relationship of the frequencies of students’ participation and performances in post-test. The results showed that: 1. Improvements of subjects’ performance in sit-bend, sit-ups, standing-long-jump and 800-meter run-away tests after six months of group activities. 2. The p value of sit-bending was higher than 0.05 leading to no significant difference between the pre- and post-tests. The p values of 60 seconds sit-ups, standing long jump, 800-meter run-away part were lower than 0.05, therefore, there were significant differences between the pre- and post-tests. 3. There was no correlation between subjects’ participation times and improvements. 4. There was no correlation between subjects’ participation times and performances in the sit-forward-and-bend part, however, there were medium and high correlations in sit-ups, standing-long-jump and 800-meter run-away parts. 5. There was a high positive correlation of subjects' participation and swimming speed. 6. There was a high positive correlation between the subjects' swimming speed and performance on 60 second sit-ups.
