Abstract:
In order to reduce the costs of aircraft, the weight of the fuselage has to be reduced. This master thesis, collaboration between the Royal Institute of Technology and Airbus Group, aims to optimize a new aircraft fuselage under development. This new fuselage design, called FISST, consists of a sandwich panel to stiffen the structure instead of the stringers used in baseline fuselage. Apart from the goal of reducing the weight, the new design also has advantages during maintenance and repairing. During this project the FISST-concept has been optimized, by modeling using the Finite Element Method, in order to fulfill given requirements. The design has been evaluated for buckling, strains and displacements. Furthermore modeling methods have been validated in order to ensure that the results are accurate enough. This report shows that the FISST-concept fulfills the given requirements better than the baseline.

Abstract:

When firms are doing business it is important to meet the customer’s expectations. It is often in the first impression (the first time the parties meet in a sales encounter) that the seller fails to do this, sometimes resulting in the prospective customer dropping the whole thought of a business deal and no further relationship is established. The first impression results from the first image and understanding a seller creates in a potential customer: here the latter gets a brief insight into the former’s organization, credibility and overall quality. Each encounter or meeting is an opportunity to achieve trust and build a relationship, but also contains the risk of reducing credibility and losing all chances of a relationship. The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyse the importance of the first impression when creating and building a business to business relationship and to describe the factors which influence this process. The theoretical framework is based on theories regarding the concept of first impression and the implications of two-way communication during the first encounter. These include the seller’s preparation and categorisation of the customer before each encounter. Other variations of communication concerns verbal and non-verbal communication, generalizations, cultural differences and circumstances where a failure can turn into an advantage. The present qualitative case study is based on interviews with five highly competent respondents with long experience of business relationships. They were chosen after discussions with Walter Carvajal, owner and MD of City Guest Service. The results showed that the first impression was very important in creating a business relationship. Some variables, e.g. gender, had less significance. Generally, the first impression included the small things a person perceived and interpreted during the first encounter. Combined, they determined whether a person chose to do business with the counterpart in question. All aspects of verbal and non-verbal commu-nication formed a basis for judging the other person. Cultural differences increased the acceptance level, reducing the risk of failure, when the parties were from differ-ent cultures.

Abstract:
The film is about a newly arrived Japanese student's initial period of adjustment at the University of North Texas. This observational documentary film follows the student and witnesses the student's first reactions to various social environments. The purpose of this creative thesis project was to depict the difficulties that international students encounter at the beginning of their stay in America. The initial goal of the video was to provide useful visual research material to people who are interested in the acculturation of foreign students. Because of its realistic character, the video can give its audiences a more immediate and vivid picture of foreign students than existing written literature. By giving an authentic portrait of the students' hardship and adjustments, the ultimate goal of this video was to increase the American people's appreciation of the difficulties encountered by foreign students who come to this country equipped with limited social assistance and resources. An accompanying production report describes the research process, the pre-production, production, and post-production stages.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to examine the motivations and attitudes first-generation college students held toward classroom interventions and written assignments. This classroom research took place during one semester in a single English 120 College Composition II class that included fourteen enrolled students with three students self-identifying as first-generation college students. The study was composed of two separate qualitative surveys: a pre-survey and a post-survey and all surveys. The pre-survey was distributed to all fourteen enrolled students during week three of the semester. The post-survey was distributed to all students during the final week of the semester. Based on the findings of this survey, and previous research conducted on first-generation college students, this study argues for three pedagogical interventions that can best engage the needs of first-generation college students. The pedagogical interventions include creating structured peer review groups, creating an empathetic space, or safe space, within the classroom, and demonstrates the importance of teaching genres that open up pathways for an emotional discourse in the classroom. These three pedagogical interventions best benefit first-generation college students, but may also benefit the learning of all students.

Abstract:
Due to immigration the non-Hispanic White population continues to decrease and the population continues to change in regard to the ethnic and racial make-up. As these demographic changes take place higher education institutions will face increasing pressure from stakeholders to create environments that facilitate degree completion among mounting numbers of populations who are at risk in terms of academic success. First generation status denotes one group of students who are at risk in terms of persistence towards a bachelor's degree. The purpose of this study was to examine what factors predict the academic success of first year, full-time first generation students. Furthermore, this study examined whether there is a relationship between race, gender, financial need, and language ability and factors used to predict the academic success of first generation students. Factors were defined as variables measured by the 2002 Your First College Year Survey (YFCY) data (HERI, 2004a). Factors fell into five main areas: Student Background Characteristics, Agents of Socialization, Structural Characteristics, Institutional Environment, and Student Effort (Pascarella & Terenzini, 1991). The study was based on secondary analysis of the 2002 YFCY data provided by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. A combination of descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and logistic regression was used for this study. Findings revealed there are significant differences between academically more successful FGs and FGs who are academically less successful in relation to three factors: Institutional Environment, Student Effort, and Agents of Socialization. FGs are more likely to experience academic success in regard to variables associated with the factor Institutional Environment. There is a greater likelihood FGs will be academically less successful in relation to variables associated with the factors Student Effort and Agents of Socialization. When considering demographic variables in relation to the three significant institutional factors, FGs who are Asian American are more likely to experience academic success. Alternatively, FGs have greater odds of being academically less successful if they are male, African American, Mexican American, and non-native speakers of English.

Abstract:
Person-first language is often labeled as the gold-standard method for writing about and addressing people who have disabilities. The goal of person-first language is to put a person before their disability and emphasize other aspects of who a person is beyond their disability. This goal offers a more appropriate option in lieu of using some of the insensitive and offensive terminology that often has been used to describe individuals with disabilities. Though thought of as a neutral and respectful method of referencing individuals with disabilities, there are still many flaws and objections to its use. A different method, disability-first language, involves calling someone a “disabled person” rather than a “person with a disability.” This method of reference contends with person-first language as many people with disabilities feel that it reflects the fact that their impairment is part of who they are. Preference between person-first and disability-first language varies across disability groups. The debate remains whether people should opt to use person-first language or disability-first language. No preference has been documented yet amongst people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, but interviews conducted in this study show that person-first language might be an appropriate option to use in general with this population.

Abstract:
It is argued that reference in first-person thought is distinct from reference in other thoughts about objects. This difference is located in the lack of acquaintance required for first-person thought. In order to be in the position to think about and refer to other objects, a subject must be acquainted with them. It is this acquaintance relation which enables him to think about a particular object. In contrast, a subject can think about himself without being acquainted with himself because he is the subject of his thought. No acquaintance relation is required in order for him to be in a position to think about himself - he is in this position already. Part I of this thesis sets out the problem of first-person thought, and introduces a distinction between subjective and objective first-person thought. Part II explores singular thought, and what it is for a subject to have a thought about a particular object. It is argued that a subject's acquaintance with an object is necessary for him to be able to think about and refer to an independent object. This means that for a subject to think about an independent object that object must in some way be present to him. In Part III it is argued that for a subject to think first-personally the object - himself - need not be present to him. The subject has experiences from the first-person perspective, grounding his subjective first-person thoughts. Because he has such experiences he can refer reflexively. He is at the centre of his scheme of reference. And it is because he can refer in subjective first-person thoughts that he can refer in objective first- person thoughts.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of cooking as a tool for personal health and community building, as well as for larger social change of the American food system. It looks at the decline of cooking in mid-20th century America, due to changes in technology, women's movement into the workforce, and the rise of fast and processed food. It then examines three distinct efforts going on today that are bringing cooking to the forefront of what they do--one in community gardening, one in food access programs, and one in food education. Each demonstrates the unique ability that cooking has to give immediate satisfaction. The lens is then widened to understand how this immediate satisfaction can, in turn, create waves in the way our food is currently produced on a much broader scale.

In this thesis, I present an action-first theory of knowledge and belief. We have a mutual interest in the successful action of our peers, and the significance of belief and knowledge stems from their role in promoting this success. Knowledge states tend to guide successful action, in an appropriately systematic manner. Belief states systematically guide our attempts to achieve our goals, and would lead to success if all went well. In defending the action-first account, I draw on a kind of pragmatism: we should look to the practical role of belief and knowledge attribution, in a social setting, to determine the nature of belief and knowledge themselves. The action-account states that the role of knowledge attribution is to identify and promote successful agents. This implies that knowledge itself is a state that tends to guide successful action. Similarly, the role of belief attribution is to help us predict how people will attempt to achieve their goals, and correct them to avoid failure where necessary. This implies that beliefs are action-guiding states that may not be success conducive - these are states that are apt to become knowledge given the appropriate evidence or argument. A final point is that the role of our ascriptions of rationality (and irrationality) is to promote practices that tend to lead to knowledge. This gives us a unified account of our concepts of knowledge, belief and rationality, founded in a cooperative society's interest in mutual success. Granting the action-account leads to significant consequences in epistemology and philosophy of mind. It gives us reason to reject various accessibility principles, and accept intellectualism with regard to know-how. All states that lead to successful action in a systematic manner, even if we do not consciously endorse their content, fit with the rationale of the action-account. Further, the account suggests a new way to model conflicted mental states, and suggests rethinking the role of the Bayesian ideal in our conception of rationality. These consequences, in turn, provide motivation for the action-account itself on pragmatic grounds: it opens up promising new lines of inquiry in philosophy.

En la actualidad, Lima Metropolitana, como capital del Perú, viene sufriendo un aumento exhaustivo de criminalidad, en especial en los robos de vehículos. Como consecuencia, en el peor de los casos, arrastra con muertes de personas que opusieron resistencia ante estos delitos. Por ello, este trabajo de investigación, brinda la solución ante esta problemática, éste es un dispositivo GPS, que será instalado en cualquier unidad vehicular motorizada. Además, con la función de monitorear en tiempo real el vehículo desde cualquier Smartphone o PC, con la posibilidad de apagar la unidad con un comando especial enviado desde estos dispositivos. De esta manera, se evita llegar a la confrontación con el criminal a la hora de salvaguardar la inversión del cliente, ya que solo se tendrá que usar cualquier celular o pc para bloquear el vehículo. El dispositivo GPS, será importado desde China y EEUU, de esta manera se aprovecharán los TLC vigentes. Actualmente, se cuentan con todos los permisos necesarios de las entidades correspondientes para su importación. Por ello, se brindará un equipo y servicio a bajo costo y único pago. Por consiguiente, éste llega a ser un producto muy competitivo a comparación de la competencia, ya que estos ofrecen servicios semejantes pero con pagos fijos mensuales. Finalmente se estima que la utilidad generada será del 75% por cada dispositivo vendido. Esta es una solución eficaz ante la delincuencia, que ofrece un uso personalizado, autónomo y a un bajo precio.
Currently, metropolitan Lima, as the capital of Peru, has been suffering an exhaustive increase in crime, especially in vehicle thefts. As a consequence, in the worst case, it leads to deaths of people who opposed resistance to these crimes. Therefore, this research work provides the solution to this problem, this is a GPS device, which will be installed in any motorized vehicle unit. In addition, with the function of monitoring in real time the vehicle from any Smartphone or PC, with the possibility of turning off the unit with a special command sent from these devices. In this way, you avoid getting confronted with the criminal when it comes to safeguarding the client's investment, since you only have to use any cell phone or PC to block the vehicle. The GPS device will be imported from China and the US, thus taking advantage of the current FTAs. Currently, they have all the necessary permits from the corresponding entities for their importation. Therefore, a team and service will be provided at a low cost and with a single payment. Therefore, it becomes a very competitive product compared to the competition, since they offer similar services but with fixed monthly payments. Finally, it is estimated that the generated profit will be 75% for each device sold. This is an effective solution to crime, which offers personalized, autonomous use at a low price.

Abstract:
The world of Byzantium is under-represented in historical fiction written in English, a fact that reflects a general negativity or even absence of Byzantium in the non-academic, cultural traditions of the Anglophone world. Sir Walter Scott’s penultimate novel Count Robert of Paris (1832), set in Constantinople at the time of the First Crusade (1096), is an interesting late work of Scott’s whose ambivalent stance towards Byzantium both asserts and refutes this fact and hints at its possible causes, at the same time offering interesting insights on how to read historical fiction meaningfully. This thesis, comprising a critical essay and a novel, explores ways of reading and writing Byzantium in historical fiction. The critical essay titled ‘Reading and writing Byzantium and the First Crusade in historical fiction: a reading of Sir Walter Scott’s Count Robert of Paris (1832)’ uses Marxist, gender, reader-response, and postcolonial theory as tools to decode Scott’s artistic strategies in the representation of Byzantium and at the same time to propose a theoretical approach to reading historical fiction. The novel titled A Secret Fire, inspired by and conversing with Scott’s Count Robert, employs the characters of a cross-dressing female crusader and a Byzantine eunuch in order to signpost the ambivalent position of Byzantium in regards with the European west at the time of the First Crusade and to subvert stereotypes of power and domination. Written in the current context of the Greek financial crisis and subsequent discussion on the position in Greece within the European Union (and the questioning of the EU in general), the thesis aims to contribute to the historical imaginary and to open up a discursive space for engaging with Byzantium and Greece beyond received ideas and negative representations.

In the billion years following the big bang, the first stars and galaxies fundamentally transformed the universe. They polluted the universe with the first heavy elements, and they produced high energy photons that reionized the intergalactic medium. Understanding this early era is at the frontier of modern astrophysics and cosmology, but it takes place so long ago that direct observations are challenging. An alternate approach is to study local relics that have survived from ancient times. Indeed, the old dwarf galaxies that orbit our Milky Way galaxy today have descended from the first galaxies and contain stars that retain a remarkably detailed record of their past. In this thesis, I use the chemical abundances of stars in old dwarf galaxies to open a window into the era of first stars and galaxies. I begin by exploring theoretical models for interpreting the chemical signatures preserved in these relic stars. Then, I help run a suite of simulations that can trace the first star forming systems to their present day locations in the Milky Way. Finally, I use high-resolution spectroscopy to measure the chemical abundances of stars in three ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (Bootes II, Reticulum II, and Tucana II) that are relics from the early universe. The most important result is a serendipitous discovery with important implications for the origin of the elements. Seven of nine stars I observed in the galaxy Reticulum II display extremely enhanced r-process abundances 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than in other ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. The r-process abundances imply that the neutron-capture material in Reticulum II was synthesized in a single prolific event, likely a neutron star binary merger. This discovery has helped address a 60-year-old question about the astrophysical origin of r-process elements.

Abstract:
Many students find their first year of college to be the most difficult moment of their educational careers. Along with college acceptance comes new expectations, a rigorous curriculum, and the usual growing pains of young adulthood. Because of these challenges, many college students find it difficult, if not impossible to make it past their first year. Limited research has been conducted to address the overall efficiency of first year programs that colleges and universities have put in place to support these students. Considering the trials faced by first year students, it is important that we identify the organizational structures that will increase student success outcomes and lead to the completion of degree programs. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between college sophomore students’ academic motivation, academic self-efficacy, their perceptions of the support they received during their first-year advisory program, and their satisfaction with the advisement they received. The target population is students who completed their first year of college and returned to the college as sophomores. This quantitative study used the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, the Academic Motivation Scale, and the Inventory of Academic Advising Functions-Student Version to measure academic self-efficacy, academic motivation, and student satisfaction; 526 freshmen students were contacted and invited to participate in the study. Responses from 57 participating students were used to answer five research questions. The study revealed that students who had high to moderate levels of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation displayed higher levels of satisfaction as it related to the academic counseling they received during their FYE. The study also revealed that only a small group of students felt that their first-year experience program led to them having a stronger sense of self-efficacy. As a result of the study, the researcher was able to find support in previous research that FYE programs have led to creating positive perceptions of about their overall college experience and their ability to do well.

Abstract:
This case study research explores the experiences of five beginning teachers within four Catholic secondary schools in Australia. The research employs a qualitative approach framed within an interpretative paradigm, drawing on perspectives of symbolic interaction to interpret interview and journal data. These perspectives are used, in conjunction with a conceptual framework derived from the relevant literature, to interpret the experiences of five new teachers against the relevant data. The literature typically investigates the stages of teacher development, where the first year is often seen by researchers as a survival year. Key literature themes include the development of self image and the impact school culture has on beginning teachers. There are two other features less often present in the literature but central in this research. One is the life history of the beginning teacher. A second, which is the major notion employed in this study, is that of professional identity and specifically how identity develops once the novice teacher is immersed within the school organisation. Each teacher was interviewed several times during their first year and each kept a journal. The discussion includes matters of comparison and contrast between the five teachers' experiences. The symbolic interactionist framework seeks to identify the meanings individuals construct of their experiences. These meanings are located from the journal and interview data gathered. Each text is examined both independently, in relation to other texts and in the light of the conceptual framework. A key procedure is to identify critical events which are then analysed and connections made to the experience of other teachers and literature themes. The key findings of the research include developing a new model for understanding the experience of beginning teachers. The research suggests that the current literature on beginning teachers is limited.;It neglects beginning teacher individuality and in particular agency and competency and centrally the dynamic and complex interaction between culture and identity. This research seeks to add significantly to the beginning teacher literature.

Tebello Nyokong, who holds a research chair in medicinal chemistry and nanotechnology at Rhodes University, has become the first South African scientist to win the L’Oreal-UNESCO award for women in science, in the physical sciences. Only one laureate is selected from each of five world regions, and Nyokong is the 2009 laureate for Africa and the Arab states. She and the winners from the other four regions travel to Paris in March to each accept the award and a generous prize of close to R1 million. Nyokong now heads the new Nanotechnology Innovation Centre for medical sensors: the biggest single research investment in the history of Rhodes. Linked to other nanotechnology centres in the country, it is designed to bridge the gap between research and the market.

Abstract:
This paper identifies America's first Great Moderation, a period from 1841-1856 of unbroken economic expansion and low volatility comparable to the Great Moderation of the 1980s-2000s. This moderation occurred despite a lack of central banks, low governmental spending, and barriers to interstate commerce during the antebellum period. I demonstrate this moderation in industrial production and stock market indexes and compare the first Great Moderation with the second in these economic factors. These results also call into question the conventional wisdom of the National Bureau of Economic Research business cycle chronology that the antebellum period was volatile and fraught with recessions. I then identify several possible causes of this stable growth in the effects of cotton prices, technological revolutions such as railroads, and wage and interest rate integration during the period, among other factors. Understanding these factors helps develop our understanding of the American antebellum economy and the causes of economic growth and stability, especially during these Great Moderations.

Larger-first partial parsing is a primarily top-down approach to partial parsing that is opposite to current easy-fzrst, or primarily bottom-up, strategies. A rich partial tree structure is captured by an algorithm that assigns a hierarchy of structural tags to each of the input tokens in a sentence. Part-of-speech tags are first assigned to the words in a sentence by a part-of-speech tagger. A cascade of Deterministic Finite State Automata then uses this part-of-speech information to identify syntactic relations primarily in a descending order of their size. The cascade is divided into four specialized sections: (1) a Comma Network, which identifies syntactic relations associated with commas; (2) a Conjunction Network, which partially disambiguates phrasal conjunctions and llly disambiguates clausal conjunctions; (3) a Clause Network, which identifies non-comma-delimited clauses; and (4) a Phrase Network, which identifies the remaining base phrases in the sentence. Each automaton is capable of adding one or more levels of structural tags to the tokens in a sentence. The larger-first approach is compared against a well-known easy-first approach. The results indicate that this larger-first approach is capable of (1) producing a more detailed partial parse than an easy first approach; (2) providing better containment of attachment ambiguity; (3) handling overlapping syntactic relations; and (4) achieving a higher accuracy than the easy-first approach. The automata of each network were developed by an empirical analysis of several sources and are presented here in detail.

This doctoral dissertation presents a comprehensive computational approach to describe quantum mechanical systems embedded in complex ionic media, primarily focusing on the first-principles representation of catalytic electrodes under electrochemical conditions. The accurate electrostatic description of electrified metal-solution interfaces represents a persistent challenge for ab-initio simulations and an essential requisite for predicting the electrical response of electrochemical convertors-i.e., the correspondence between the macroscopic voltage and the microscopic interfacial charge distribution. The approach consists of controlling the electrode voltage via its conjugate extensive variable, namely, the charge of the system. As a preliminary to the study of electrified interfaces in ionic media, we analyze charged slabs in vacuum subject to periodic boundary conditions. We show that the corrective potential (defined as the difference between the exact open-boundary potential and the periodic potential obtained from a Fourier transform) varies smoothly over space, allowing for its determination on a coarse mesh using optimized electrostatic solvers. Because this scheme takes into account exact open boundary conditions, its performance is considerably superior to that of conventional corrective methods. Extending this computational scheme, we present an efficient approach to model electrochemical systems under realistic conditions, based on a first-principles description of the interface region and on a continuum representation of the ionic solvent.

We demonstrate that the ionicsolution contribution to the electrostatic potential-the ionic solvent reaction field--can be computed independently at low cost simultaneously using fast Fourier transforms and multigrid techniques, and highlight the importance of adopting adequate electrochemical boundary conditions to correctly predict the electrical response of electrode-electrolyte interfaces. In order to probe and validate the electrochemical model, we study the vibrational Stark effect-i.e., the influence of the applied voltage on the vibrational properties-for carbon monoxide adsorbed on transition metal surfaces, a phenomenon whose description requires an accurate representation of the interfacial electric field. We start out the analysis by examining the vibrational properties of CO adsorbed on clean and ruthenium-covered platinum substrates. The calculated C-O stretching frequencies are found to be in excellent agreement with experimental measurements despite the frequent qualitative failures of local and semilocal exchange-correlation functionals in predicting adsorption energies for CO on transition metals. We then introduce an orbital-resolved force analysis to clarify the electronic origins of the C-O red shifts, and present a sensitivity analysis to assess the influence the HOMO and LUMO hybridizations on the calculated frequencies, thereby establishing the remarkable accuracy of conventional density-functional theory methods in determining the vibrational properties of adsorbed CO. Based on these results, we apply the electrochemical model to provide the first comprehensive ab-initio description of the vibrational Stark effect for CO on transition metal surfaces, finding excellent agreement with spectroscopic measurements.

As related projects, we have implemented a molecular-dynamics algorithm for metallic systems and developed a self-interaction correction method to rectify the tendency of density-functional theory calculations to overestimate binding energies. The present computational electrochemistry toolkit open promising perspectives for the application of first-principles methods to assist the microstructural engineering of electrochemical convertors.

Jouvence of FLUOR (JouFLU) is a major overhaul of the FLUOR (Fiber Linked Unit for Optical Recombination) beam combiner built by the Laboratoire d’études spatiales et d’instrumentation en astrophysique (LESIA) and installed at the CHARA Array. These upgrades improve the precision, observing efficiency, throughput, and integration of FLUOR with the CHARA Array as well as introduce new modes of operation to this high-precision instrument for interferometry. Such high precision observations with FLUOR have provided the first unambiguous detections of hot dust around main sequence stars, showing an unexpectedly dense population of (sub)micrometer dust grains close to their sublimation temperature, 1400 K. Competing models exist to explain the persistence of this dust; some of which suggest that dust production is a punctuated and chaotic process fueled by asteroid collisions and comet infall that would show variability on timescales of a few years. By re-observing stars from the exozodiacal disks survey we have searched for variations in the detected disks. We have found evidence that for some stars the amount of circumstellar flux from these previously detected exozodiacal disks, or exozodis, has varied. The flux from some exozodis has increased, for some the flux has decreased, and for a few the amount has remained constant. These results are intriguing and will be no doubt useful for future modeling of this phenomenon. Furthermore, long-term monitoring is suggested for some of these objects to confirm detections and determine the rate of variation.

Chapter 1 provides a general introduction on the role of bioisosterism of fluorine aiming to improve the pharmacokinetics properties of lead compounds. GABAA receptors specifically, synaptic GABAA receptors, extrasynaptic GABAA receptors and GABAA rho receptors are then presented. Compounds that exhibit agonist and partial agonist effects at these receptors are also discussed. The applications of some compounds as GABAA receptor PET radiotracers are also described. Chapter 2 details the synthesis of two fluorinated analogues of muscimol, fluoromuscimol and trifluoromethylmuscimol. Fluoromuscimol was obtained from the lithiation of a Boc-protected isoxazole followed by in-situ fluorination using NFSI, whereas trilfuoromethylmuscimol was obtained from the coupling of a heteroaryl iodide with trifluoromethylcopper species, which was generated in-situ from MFSDA in the presence of CuI. Fluoromuscimol and trifluoromethylmuscimol were assessed on human synaptic, (α₁β₂γ₂), extrasynaptic, (α₄β₂δ) and ρ₁ subunits of the GABAA receptor. The biological results show that fluoromuscimol exhibits greater maximum response in comparison to GABA at the extrasynaptic GABAA receptors (α₄β₂δ), but lower overall potency, whereas trifluoromethylmuscimol was inactive at all the tested GABAA receptors. Chapter 3 discusses the synthesis and late stage fluorination of diaryliodonium salts as precursors to fluoromuscimol. Application of iodonium salts as precursors for nucleophilic fluorination in PET studies are also highlighted. The last part of this chapter focuses on the synthesis of iodomuscimol as a potential alternative SPECT radiotracer to fluoromuscimols in probing GABA binding sites on GABAA receptors.

Abstract:
This thesis is a work of creative fiction accompanied by a critical/reflective essay. The dissertation is a novel (Be There First Thing) comprising thirteen chapters, each in the style of a short story, that give glimpses into the life of the protagonist, Lily Sled, beginning when she is eleven-years-old and ending when she is near thirty-years old. The first seven of these chapters are set in southern Ontario, Canada, while the last six are set in and around Swansea, Wales, employing a juxtaposition of place and the theme of the foreigner via linguistic and cultural similarities. The structure of this novel is similar to a Composite Novel, as it consists of story-like chapters, yet these stories are not autonomous, thus it is more closely aligned with the Bildungsroman genre, employing the technique of vignettes to illustrate the coming of age of the protagonist, while functioning as a novel of development. The accompanying essay seeks to analyse both the writing process and the literary significance of the novel itself.
