Abstract:
The following is a case study of the Northeast Fisheries Project, in Northeast Thailand, carried out jointly by the Canadian International Development Agency, its implementing agency and the Thai Department of Fisheries from 1986 to 1990. The formulation and events surrounding the project will be reviewed, with special emphasis on an experimental extension program which was pivotal to the project's success. Overall, the project did not succeed in meeting its objectives, and the purpose of this study is to examine the role of Thai values, social structure and bureaucracy, in contributing to this failure. Specifically, we will consider Thailand as a 'bureaucratic polity', the history and dynamics of patron-client relationships, and how these factors interact in the context of development projects and programs.

Islam, Mohammed Mehrul. "An analysis of the role of extension methodology on poverty reduction : a comparative study of aquaculture extension programmes in the Northwest Fisheries Extension Project (NFEP) command area, Bangladesh." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/29559.

Full text
Abstract:
The current deficiencies of extension interventions in aquaculture in Bangladesh, in particular, in the North-west have been examined. The importance of the inclusion of a social dimension in development interventions has been reviewed. Aquaculture, extension, social development and poverty are defined in the context of the study and a model of their interactions is proposed and used to elucidate the role of aquaculture in poverty reduction. Research questions were generated to examine the contention that ‘Aquaculture Extension Approaches that fail to substantially address social development will lead to no more than a superficial reduction of poverty’. The study approach chosen was comparative case study (the first use of its' kind in this context). Within the study, communities representing four different aquaculture extension approaches and a, null-case, control were selected and then engaged in the research process. The findings that emerged from the study were matched and linked to the proposed model to establish patterns and linkages between aquaculture and poverty; extension and aquaculture; aquaculture and social development; social development and poverty; extension and poverty. The study suggests that all these aspects go hand in hand within communities, and that it is the degree of marginalisation that defines the success of any intervention as much as the intervention approach itself. The study indicates that aquaculture could be an entry point for a poverty alleviation strategy but the inclusion of a social dimension, together with the chosen technical intervention, is essential in achieving higher impacts on a sustainable basis. A number of recommendations for greater poverty impact through aquaculture intervention as an entry point are put forward, including the targeting of women as well as men, emphasise a learning approach, and the building of networks through forming community producers groups, fish clubs, Fry Traders and fingerling producers groups.

Adeegbe, Abiose Olanike. "Women's role in development : the case of fisheries in Nigeria." Thesis, University of Portsmouth, 2000. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.369434.

Full text
Abstract:
Women playa vital role in the agricultural sector of many developing economies. However, their efforts have been largely taken for granted, their needs ignored, and their work remains statistically invisible. Since statistics are supposed to function as tools in planning, this has widespread consequences - the continued neglect of women's activities especially as this relates to development. Although the importance of the role of women in development has of recent been acknowledged, the approach at a planning and operational level has been minimal. This has led to questions about the limitations of focussing on women in isolation and instead examining ways of focussing on gender which is the core of this research. In view of this, this research provides a framework for integrating women into the mainstream of development activities without treating them as a homogenous group, using a case study approach of women in the fisheries sector in Igbokoda fishing community, Nigeria. This study uses primary data collected through a household survey from a sample of 300 women over a period of 5 months. The survey covers three major areas - the gender division of labour and time allocation to activities; the gender allocation of responsibilities (responsibility for household expenditure by gender); and access and control of men and women to productive resources. Another aspect that is important to this research concerns development projects - past and present - and the impact these have on women. The overall purpose of this study is to demonstrate that gender roles constitute a key variable in the socioeconomic condition of any country - one that can be decisive in the success or failure of development plans. The major results of the study suggest that women in this community (as in many agricultural communities of developing economies) are working longer hours than men. They spend on average about 13% more time on income-earning activities and 9% less on leisure than men. They also spend on average 70% of their earnings on household food and basic needs. Only about 3.3% of the women studied had access to modem technology and extension services/literacy and training programmes. This research argues that women's work is critical to the survival of their families, they are key actors in the economic system, and their neglect in development plans has left untapped a potentially large economic contribution.

Abstract:

Aquatic macrophytes are important components in structuring aquatic communities because they provide physical and biological functions that contribute to the stability of the ecosystem. Macrophytes provide the basis for the aquatic food-web and also provide habitat and refugia for aquatic fauna. In systems that lack macrophytes, anthropogenic re-establishment may be a feasible management approach to improve aquatic ecosystems. Understanding environmental factors that regulate colonization, dispersal, and persistence of aquatic macrophytes is pertinent to re-establishment efforts. The purpose of this study is to test hypotheses regarding success of macrophyte re-establishment efforts in Little Bear Creek Reservoir, Alabama using different macrophyte species, water depths, plant patch size and protection against herbivores at planting sites. In addition, a deductive GIS model is used to predict suitable areas to focus re-establishment efforts. Knowledge generated from hypothesis testing and application of GIS modeling provides novel information and tools for managing aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:
Zoo officials have for many years participated in ex situ conservation activities. Recently however, a growing number of zoos have shown an interest in becoming involved with in situ conservation projects. One such zoo is the North Carolina Zoological Park (NCZP) in Asheboro, NC. NCZP officials have committed to several of these projects and are aware of their importance. However, little is known about how visitors regard these activities. The two research questions asked were: 1) Are visitors aware of the NCZPâs involvement in in situ conservation efforts? and 2) Do patronsâ of the NCZP support those efforts? Three hypotheses were identified. These included: H1: visitors with an increased awareness of the zooâs involvement in in situ conservation would provide a greater amount of support for these projects, H2: membership status would not affect a visitorâs level of declared support for in situ conservation, and H3: membership status would affect a visitorâs level of monetary support for in situ conservation. A survey instrument was developed using a cross-sectional design. The survey focused on four key elements including contributions (monetary support), declared support for local and international projects, understanding of in situ conservation, and visitor relationships with the zoo. The survey was conducted on-site at the NCZP in June and July 2007. Tests of statistical significance and measures of association indicated that awareness played a statistically significant role in how much declared support a visitor had for a project, but had little to no role in how much money visitors contributed on an annual basis. Findings also indicated that membership status was not related to declared support and therefore this relationship was not statistically significant. Finally findings indicated that the relationship between membership status and annual monetary contributions was statistically significant. Recommendations for the NCZP were made based on the studyâs findings.

Abstract:
This research was conducted in Praia do Forte, located in City of Mata de São João, Bahia State, where it operates one of the three research bases of the Tamar Project, since the end of 1982, (FUNDAÇÃO PRÓ-TAMAR, 2000), the time when the place was a modest fishing village, who had the habit of hunting, fishing and consuming sea turtles and their eggs.Tamar Project is a Brazilian conservation project dedicated in preserving sea turtle species extinction threats. The motivation of development this research was the realization that before the Tamar Project, knowledge about sea turtles, especially in Brazil, were the property of the fishermen, and that they were the ones who guided the Tamar group on the behavior of these animals on the spot. This research aims to identify how the Community of Fishermen of Praia do Forte contributed, through the transmission of their traditional knowledge, for the Tamar Project conservation actions with the turtles. The methodology was qualitative, the method of oral history, through semi-structured interviews applied to the older fishermen from Praia do Forte and representatives of the Tamar Project. As a result of this research we can say that the traditional knowledge of Praia do Forte fishermen contributed to the conservation of the Tamar Project, especially in relation to the reproduction mode, spawning seasons and habits of these species on the Brazilian coast, until then unknown by project technicians

Davydov, Vladimir. "People on the move : development projects and the use of space by Northern Baikal reindeer herders, hunters and fishermen." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2011. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=185649.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about the mobility of northern Baikal hunters, reindeer herders and fishermen and their engagement with living in the world through the structures they build and use in the context of numerous development projects and innovations. This work suggests a shift from the ‘static perspective’ where local people’s spatial practices were analysed through the prism of their relationship to a particular stationary structure, such as a village or a hunter’s base to a dynamic one where a structure is interpreted as embedded in a complex network of movements connecting a number of locations. The houses or hunting log cabins that local people use within their routine do not exist separately from other practices. Therefore, this thesis approaches northern Baikal hunters and reindeer herders as people settled neither in the village nor in the forest, but rather as people moving in-between structures, which are not necessarily concentrated in one particular place. It analyses some spaces that are intensively used and others that are used occasionally or seasonally without creating a dichotomy. The way of life of northern Baikal hunters, reindeer herders and fishermen demonstrates a certain continuity. They always combined the use of stationary and mobile architecture as well as movements of different length with their daily tasks. Local people’s everyday practices were always based on intensive movements between numerous locations which functioned as points of constant return. Local people managed to incorporate numerous innovations and development projects by means of movements and for the purpose of movements. Hence, movements can be interpreted as a creative process which serves as an expression of local people’s own ideas and views. This is a thesis about people for whom to move means to live.

Smith, Patrick W. "Response of Fishes to Restoration Projects in Bayou St. John located within the City of New Orleans, Louisiana, including Hydrological Characterization and Hydrodynamic Modelling." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2015. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2110.

Full text
Abstract:
Quantifying the impacts of restoration on coastal waterways is crucial to understanding their effectiveness. Here, I look at the impacts of multiple restoration projects on urban waterways within the city limits of New Orleans, LA, with an emphasis on the response of fishes. First I report the effects of two projects designed to improve exchange down estuary on the hydrologic characteristics of Bayou St. John (BSJ). Within BSJ, flow is dominated by subtidal wind driven processes. Removal of an outdated flood control structure did not appear to alter exchange in BSJ, but removal combined with sector gate openings did. I also refined a three dimensional hydrodynamic model of this system to have accurate predictions of velocity and elevation. Temperature and salinity were difficult to constrain with this model. Solutions of this model were used to compare flow metrics, along with linearly interpolated temperature, and other variables to Red Drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) activity and movement patterns. Relationships between Red Drum activity and velocity suggested a response to subtidal, wind driven flow. Overall, high Sedentariness, a measure of inactivity, was found suggesting high levels of site fidelity. Higher mean Sedentariness during the night was also found. I also used a pseudo-BACI design to analyze the fish assemblage response to removal of an outdated flood control structure and the impacts of sector gate openings on fish guild species richness in BSJ. Limited differences were found when comparing fish assemblages before and after removal, but these differences were likely due to a decrease in salinity not restoration efforts. No significant differences in Freshwater or Estuarine fish guild species richness was observed for any of the control or impact sites. Marine fish species richness was found to be higher immediately following sector gate openings at the site closest to the structure, suggesting an initial pulse of young marine organisms is provided via these events. The findings here can be used to optimize management of exchange flow in coastal impounded waterways.

Kinuthia, Wanyee. "“Accumulation by Dispossession” by the Global Extractive Industry: The Case of Canada." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/30170.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis draws on David Harvey’s concept of “accumulation by dispossession” and an international political economy (IPE) approach centred on the institutional arrangements and power structures that privilege certain actors and values, in order to critique current capitalist practices of primitive accumulation by the global corporate extractive industry. The thesis examines how accumulation by dispossession by the global extractive industry is facilitated by the “free entry” or “free mining” principle. It does so by focusing on Canada as a leader in the global extractive industry and the spread of this country’s mining laws to other countries – in other words, the transnationalisation of norms in the global extractive industry – so as to maintain a consistent and familiar operating environment for Canadian extractive companies. The transnationalisation of norms is further promoted by key international institutions such as the World Bank, which is also the world’s largest development lender and also plays a key role in shaping the regulations that govern natural resource extraction. The thesis briefly investigates some Canadian examples of resource extraction projects, in order to demonstrate the weaknesses of Canadian mining laws, particularly the lack of protection of landowners’ rights under the free entry system and the subsequent need for “free, prior and informed consent” (FPIC). The thesis also considers some of the challenges to the adoption and implementation of the right to FPIC. These challenges include embedded institutional structures like the free entry mining system, international political economy (IPE) as shaped by international institutions and powerful corporations, as well as concerns regarding ‘local’ power structures or the legitimacy of representatives of communities affected by extractive projects. The thesis concludes that in order for Canada to be truly recognized as a leader in the global extractive industry, it must establish legal norms domestically to ensure that Canadian mining companies and residents can be held accountable when there is evidence of environmental and/or human rights violations associated with the activities of Canadian mining companies abroad. The thesis also concludes that Canada needs to address underlying structural issues such as the free entry mining system and implement FPIC, in order to curb “accumulation by dispossession” by the extractive industry, both domestically and abroad.

Oyeleke, Babawale Sowemimo. "Assessment of productivity and supply chain of aquaculture projects in Gauteng Province for sustainable operation." Diss., 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/23118.

Full text
Abstract:
The main aim of the study is to assess the productivity and supply chain of aquaculture projects in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The research adopted the use of quantitative method; and collected data and information from the five regions that make up the province. Both primary and secondary data were collected. The study used correlation analyses to determine the perfect fit or negative fit of some variables to supply chain as well as the consumers‟ reactions to the questionnaires. Gross margin analysis as well as gross profit margin ratio was used to determine the profitability of aquaculture production in the province. Findings of the study revealed underutilization of production capacities of the established fish farms. The fish farmers in the study are currently using 36% of the capacities of the established aquaculture projects in the study area. The profit margin was in excess of 40% in all the projects surveyed. The study further revealed lack of proper, effective and efficient supply chain for aquaculture projects which adversely affect aquaculture growth and sustainability in Gauteng Province

In order to play a more useful role in modern soclety, adult have to be able to absorb new knowledge continuously. However, because they have already finished formal education, it is important for them to participate in vocational training, especially for the under-educated farmers and fishermen. This study is based on the project about the subsidiary skill for farmers and fishemen which examlnes the factors that in-fluence the effectiveness of vocational training. Using adult learning theory as a basis, we attempt to find out the motivation of participants, the teaching style, the currlculum deslgn, the learning of participants and the learnlng effec-tiveness of the training, and also the causal relationship of those factors. One would hope that the findings can provide some suggestions for improving the training programs. The results of the research revealed, that although the participants showed weak learning motivation, however, the majohty fully partlcipated. Although the participants had positive comment regarding the teaching style and curriculum design, it was also indicated that "the total training period ", "the adjustment of curriculum content" and "the supporting equipment" had to be improved. The effectiveness is not good enough, because only 12% of participants are able to utilize the new skills to find additional employment. Analysis of variance showed that participants with different skills had different learning motivation, learning and learning effectiveness, also had different satlsfaction of teaching skill, varying curriculum adjustment and utility of the curriculum. The participants of make-up skill were more satisfied with teaching skill, curriculum adjustment and the utility of the curriculum, the participants of plumbing and electric skill had higher motivation, learnlng and learning effectiveness. Path analysis showed that learning motivation and curriculum design had both of positive and significant ifluence on learning. Learning motivation. teaching style and learning had positive and significant influence on learning effectiveness, too. The result highlinghts that learning motivation, teaching style, curriculum design and learning are all important factors that influence learning effectiveness. Therefore, we suggest that the agencies that develop the programs should encourage only those whose motivation is congruous with the training objectives, and offer the suitable training period and supply enough learning materials. If the teachers, based on the need of participants, can adjust their curriculum content, then they can induce the learning of the participants and therefore improve learning effectiveness.

Jamali, Hafeez Ahmed. "A harbor in the tempest: megaprojects, identity, and the politics of place in Gwadar, Pakistan." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/30322.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to understand the ways in which Pakistani government’s attempts to initiate large-scale infrastructure development projects in Balochistan Province have transformed its social and political landscape. Ethnographically, the study focuses on Gwadar, a small coastal town in Pakistan’s western Balochistan Province to show how colonial and postcolonial projects of progress and development suppress or subsume other kinds of lived geographies and imaginations of place. Keeping in mind the centrality of everyday experiences in generating social forms, this dissertation describes how development, transnationalism, and ethnic identity are (re)configured. It is based on ethnographic encounters that foreground the lived experiences and imaginations of fishermen from Med kinship and occupational group who occupy a subaltern position within the local status hierarchy in Gwadar. On the one hand, the promise of becoming modern citizens of the future mega city incites new desires and longings among those fishermen that facilitate their incorporation into emergent regimes of labor and entrepreneurship. On the other hand, Pakistani security forces have tightened their control over the local population by establishing a cordon sanitaire around Gwadar Port and the town. These mechanisms of control have disrupted local fishermen`s experiences of place and intimate sociality and introduced elements of exclusion, fear, and paranoia. By interrupting the fishermen`s expectations of their rightful place in the city, it compels them to think of alternate ways to confront the state’s development agenda, including peaceful protest and armed struggle. The dissertation concludes, tentatively, that the imposition of political violence by state authorities that accompanies the structural violence of mega infrastructure projects tends to create a mirror effect whereby the victims of development adopt a language of violence and a different idiom of identity.
