Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this study was to contribute to the novice music teacher case literature by studying the prevalent themes in the experiences of five first-year teachers. The teachers submitted periodic journal entries and were also interviewed at the beginning of their second semester of teaching. I analyzed transcripts using HyperResearch and submitted them to the participants for both descriptive and interpretive validity checks. Many themes emerged, but those with the highest frequency counts were: Students (behavior), Students (musical). Administrative, Students (personal), Self-evaluation (discipline), and Self evaluation (personal). The five teachers had varying experiences, and all continued in those situations for the following year. Teacher educators must prepare novice teachers for the varying realities of their early experiences, and school administrators must offer effective support during this critical time.

Abstract:
The effectiveness of university academic process depends on how quickly and effectively a first-year student overcomes the challenges of the induction process. Creating conditions for the successful induction of students in the educational process is one of the priorities of higher education. This paper focuses on the literature review devoted to the main directions of current scientific research on the problem of adaptation of first-year students.

Abstract:
In many universities, first year literature courses are required for students in a wide variety of programs, including arts and sciences. These courses are generally focused on teaching transferable skills and strategies, such as critical analysis, essay writing, and research. This article argues that picturebooks are an exceptional teaching tool for these broadly focused first-year courses, because they quickly engage students as learners, encourage participation, and open students to new approaches of critically reading texts while challenging their assumptions and personal biases about children’s literature. Examples of picturebooks, secondary sources, class discussion, and group work activities used in first year literature courses are shared, along with students’ responses to these approaches. The article ends with an explanation of a short, low-stakes assignment that instructors can assign students to help build essential skills with picturebooks, and exercises to do around picturebooks to work on critical thinking skills. Picturebooks are often perceived as being simple and only for children, but many picturebooks are layered texts that make great teaching tools for any literature course.

AbstractIn the period 1986–1991, experiments have been carried out with an introductory course in computer programming, based on functional programming. Due to thorough educational design and evaluation, a successful course has been developed. This has led to a revision of the computer programming education in the first year of the computer science curriculum at the University of Twente. This article describes the approach, the aim of the computer programming course, the outline and subject matter of the course, and the evaluation. Educational research has been done to assess the quality of the course.

Abstract:
The lack of appropriately qualified teachers in South Africa is growing rapidly and debates about the decline in teacher numbers in South Africa are increasing. In this study, the results of an investigation into possible factors that impact on the career choice of teaching students are reported. The reasons why first-year teaching students at the University of Pretoria chose teachings a career were studied by using a non-experimental design (survey design; administering anon-standardised questionnaire). The results revealed, inter alia, that a number of factors influence the career choice of first-year teaching students. Trends that emerged from the current study include the following: many more women than men enter the teaching profession; relatively few African language speaking students choose education as a field of study and the role of parents in helping their children to choose a career cannot be underestimated.

Abstract:
Previous studies have identified that genres and genre knowledge are not only pivotal for the development of writing expertise but also for facilitating writing-related transfer. However, little research concerns issues of teaching genres for writing transfer to first-year English as a second language (L2) writers at universities in the US. This article attempts to develop a genre-based pedagogic framework for L2 transfer teaching, aiming to help first-year L2 students address linguistic, rhetorical, and genre-bound challenges they confront and improve their writing expertise, as well as develop their ability of writing transfer across disciplines. The goals of this article are dual: (a) to address an existing gap in the literature and research on transfer, and (b) provide academic writing instructions for teaching first-year L2 writers at universities in the United States.
