Abstract:
Social scientists treat stone-throwing as a non-violent act or argue that protest movements may be primarily non-violent despite stone-throwing. However, this study of an iconic example, the first intifada (Palestinian uprising, 1987–1993), demonstrates that stone-throwing is better characterized as unarmed violence. Definitions of violence underscore that throwing rocks is a violent act. Moreover, informed observers and data collected on stone-induced injuries during four years of the intifada illustrate the bodily harm caused by stones. The throwing of stones was central to the intifada and its identity and definition. Stone-throwing was the most visible tactic Palestinians used in the first intifada. Lastly, most scholars emphasize the protestors’ perceptions when it might be that the targets’ perceptions matter more for understanding definitions of (non-)violence and subsequent policy changes. These findings challenge important social science work and the mainstream Israeli and Palestinian narratives about the first intifada.

Abstract:
The main causes of rock degradation in stone buildings are discussed and the current methods of recovering damaged stones are summarized. The Alkaline Activation seems to present a great potential to deal with particular cases of damaged stones resulting mainly from fracture incidents provoked by physical actions, where the global substitution of the stone itself is not considered. A practical case of recovering granite on the windows frames of a beautiful chalet to be intended for the Municipal Archives at Vila Real is described, in what is considered to be the first experiment of this technique in recovering building stone.

Abstract:
Background. Laparoscopic ureterolithotomy has become an alternative to open surgery for removing large stones that is not amenable to endoscopic treatment. In most of the published literature, laparoscopic ap- proach for lower ureteric stone is described to be less successful than middle and upper ureter. Identifica- tion in anatomical landmarks and exposing the distal ureter has been the major boundaries in establishing laparoscopic distal ureteral stone. We hope to provide clarity and feasibility that may increase our knowledge in laparoscopic ureterolithotomy for large distal ureteral stone. Aim. The obbjective is to share our experience in laparoscopic ureterolithotomy for large distal ureteric stone with transperitoneal approach Methods. A 37 years old male has been diagnosed with a right hydronephrosis due to proximal ureterolithiasis and stone at left calyx inferior, first and stone migrated to right distal ureter on 12 hours prior surgery. He underwent laparoscopic ureterolithotomy with transperitoneal approach. Results. We successfully perform laparoscopic ureterolithotomy with transperitoneal approach on a 37 y.o male patient who diagnosed with a a right hydronephrosis due to distal ureterolithiasis and stone at left calyx inferior. Duration of operation was 45 minutes. Patient was discharged at 2nd postoperative day without any complications. Conclusion. A Transperitoneal laparoscopic ureterolithotomy for distal ureteric stone is a safe and feasible technique that should be an options on every patients who plan to undergo distal ureterolithotomy especially large stone

Abstract:
This interdisciplinary study critically revisits the Australian print media???s engagement with Helen Garner???s controversial work of ???non-fiction???, The First Stone (1995). Print news media engagement with the book, marked by intense discursive contestation over feminism, has been constituted both by feminists and other critics as a significant cultural signpost. However, the highly visible print media event following the book???s publication raised a plethora of critical questions and dilemmas that remain unsatisfactorily addressed. Building upon John Fiske???s work on media events as sites of maximum visibility and discursive turbulence (Fiske: 1996), this study re-theorises the public dialogue following The First Stone???s publication in terms of four constitutive elements: narrative, celebrity, audience, and history and conflict. Through an analysis of these four diverse yet interconnected aspects of the media event, I create a critical space not only for its limitations to emerge but also the frequently overlooked possibilities it offers in terms of the wider feminism and print media culture relationship. As part of its central aim to refigure The First Stone media event, this thesis argues against prior characterisations of the debate as constitutive of either a monologic articulation of conservative, antifeminist voices or an unmitigated attack on its author by a homogenous feminism. In particular, I use this media event as indicative of the sophistication and complexity of media engagement with contemporary feminism, despite both continued derision and overly simplistic celebration of this relationship. Texts subject to analysis here include: The First Stone, various ???mainstream??? media representations and self-representations of three ???celebrity feminists??? (Helen Garner, Anne Summers and Jenna Mead), letters to the editor of newspapers and magazines, ???popular??? feminist books by Kathy Bail and Virginia Trioli, and a number of media texts in which those claiming a feminist subject position and those sympathetic to feminism act as either news sources or columnists/commentators. Although Garner???s narrative is throughout identified to be deeply problematic, I argue that the media event it precipitated provides valuable insights into both the opportunities and the constraints of the print media-feminism nexus in 1990s Australia.

Taking into consideration that tasks have been playing a central role within the fields of second language acquisition and language pedagogy, this qualitative study aimed at investigating 9th grade students' perceptions regarding the implementation of a cycle of tasks. The tasks were designed under Skehan's (1996, 1998) frameworks for task analysis and implementation, and their respective teaching procedures, which followed the pedagogical principles of the task-based approach (Ellis, 2003), with the purpose of preparing students to read the first chapter of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' (Rowling, 1999). Furthermore, the tasks also took into consideration the themes brought in PCNLE(1998), the concept of focus on form (Ellis, 2012; Long,1991), which lies at the core of task-based lessons, Long's (2015) needs analysis concept, and the elements of planning by Fosterand Skehan (1996; 1999) and repetition by Bygate (2001). The seventeen teenage EFL learners from Colégio de Aplicação, who attended fourteen classes, answered post-task questionnaires at the end of each class and took part in an interview in the end ofthe task cycle. All data collected was submitted to qualitative analysis. The results showed that, for this group of teenage EFL learners, TBA was perceived as effective in promoting learning opportunities, and that the cycle of tasks was indeed successful in leading them to read the first chapter of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". Moreover, participants' perceptions reflect the teaching principles of TBA as well as the elements, procedures and concepts of the theoretical frameworks used to guide the development and implementation of the cycle of tasks, such as focus on meaning and tasks' resemblance to real world. Results also showed that (1) Skehan's frameworks are resourceful in balancing the task level of difficulty and the learners' attention between meaning and form; (2) adding games to the cycle of tasks was motivational and important in students' perspective; and (3) planning and repetition should be seen in more dynamic ways than what it is proposed within the frames so as to meet the needs and demands of the complexity of the classroom environment. Finally, this study indicates that designing and implementing a cycle of tasks can promote improvement in teacher understanding of the learning and teaching processes, and contribute to a teacher's education.

Bainerman, Corey. "First Impressions of Manager Fairness: Set in Stone or Revision-Prone?" Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/5457.

Full text
Abstract:
Manager fairness matters to employees and has important work outcomes. The current research explored whether differences exist in the rate of revision (change) of first impressions of a manager’s interactional and procedural fairness/unfairness. After observing impression-inconsistent information, participants’ initial impressions of interactional fairness/unfairness were hypothesized to exhibit greater amounts of impression revision than impressions of procedural fairness/unfairness. A 2 (fairness type: interactional vs. procedural) x 2 (initial behaviour: fair vs. unfair) x 2 (time of rating: initial vs. revised) experimental design involving 165 participants was implemented. Results show that the rate of change in ratings of interactional fairness over time was significantly greater than the rate of change in ratings of procedural fairness in the unfair initial-impression condition, as predicted. This was not true for the fair initial-impression condition. Unexpectedly, first impressions of fairness in general did not exhibit more revision than unfair first impressions. Implications are discussed.

Abstract:
Punishment and the proper means of rehabilitating and reforming criminals stand at the forefront of public concern in American society. This dissertation examines the historical precedents of the modern debate over imprisonment by considering power, work, and the manner in which they were negotiated within the world of the nineteenth-century reform institution. The primary case study derives from historical archaeological investigations of Rhode Island's first State Prison in Providence. Constructed in 1838, the prison was enlarged and rebuilt in several phases before its abandonment in 1877 and its demolition in 1893. Other case studies include the Smithfield (Rhode Island) Town Farm and Asylum (1834–1870), established to meet the local need for poor relief, and the various orphanages, asylums, and juvenile reform structures at the State Farm in Howard, Rhode Island. Archaeological and architectural analyses of these complexes address different aspects of the questions raised in this dissertation about the relationship between landscape, labor, and power in the milieu of industrial capitalism.

Abstract:
The official mandate of the National Gallery of Canada's is to "develop, maintain, and make known, throughout Canada and internationally, a collection of works of art, both historic and contemporary, with special, but not exclusive, reference to Canada." 1 The broad inclusiveness of this mandate notwithstanding, it was not until 1986 that the National Gallery acquired its first contemporary Aboriginal work of art, Carl Beam's (1943-2005) The North American Iceberg (1985). This thesis outlines the National Gallery's history concerning the collection, display and dissemination of contemporary Aboriginal art. Its title refers to a speech made in 1994 by a member of the Society of Canadian Artists of Native Ancestry, the driving force behind the inclusion of Aboriginal art in the National Gallery's permanent collection and exhibition schedule. An outline of criticisms toward Canada and its art museums from the 1950s to the 1980s highlights the lack of dissemination and display of Aboriginal cultural production. An analysis of the current state of Aboriginal art at the National Gallery and the changes undergone by the institution question whether or not it has been successful in being more inclusive of the artistic production of Canada's First People. Questioning the National Gallery's motives in terms of Irit Rogoff's notions of strategies of compensatory visibility, the enactment of loss, and the staging of cultural encounters will bring to light the institution's apparent success or failure. Institutional change can be influenced by many factors--individuals such as curators, politics and world events. This thesis highlights key factors that affected change at the National Gallery concerning their ambiguous relationship with Aboriginal art. 1 National Gallery of Canada, "About the NGC," http://www.gallery.ca/english/91.htm

This study investigated the relationship among job stress, emotional labor, and job burnout, in department store counters. A questionnaire was used to collect data from staff working at, the counters of a department store in Hsinchu, from December 2018 to January 2019. A, total of 250 copies were distributed, with 249 copies collected, and 220 valid questionnaires were received with a recovery rate of 88%. A series of statistical analyses were conducted via the statistical software SPSS20.0 and SmartPLS, including descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and structural equations modeling. Subjects of this study were mostly females, single, aged 21 to 30. Their, working hours were over 8 hours but no more than 10 hours, and they had been working for more than one year but fewer than three years. The results of Pearson correlation showed that job stress of counter staff was positively related to emotional labor. Job stress was positively related to job burnout. Emotional labor was positively related to job burnout. Consistent with previous studies, when job stress increases, emotional labor increases. When job stress increases, job burnout will also increase. According to the results of SmartPLS statistical analysis, job stress, job burnout and emotional labor will all affect job overload negatively. The counter staff need to work for long hours everyday and interact with customers respectfully. They are not able to express their true emotions, which leads to emotional and physical exhaustions. In order to solve these problems, corporations should provide education and training for these staff. Moreover, corporations should listen to the voices of the counter staff to reduce their emotional and physical stress and for them to provide better performance.

Abstract:
AbstractA systematic theory of structural limits for finite models has been developed by Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez. It is based on the insight that the collection of finite structures can be embedded, via a map they call the Stone pairing, in a space of measures, where the desired limits can be computed. We show that a closely related but finer grained space of measures arises — via Stone-Priestley duality and the notion of types from model theory — by enriching the expressive power of first-order logic with certain “probabilistic operators”. We provide a sound and complete calculus for this extended logic and expose the functorial nature of this construction. The consequences are two-fold. On the one hand, we identify the logical gist of the theory of structural limits. On the other hand, our construction shows that the duality-theoretic variant of the Stone pairing captures the adding of a layer of quantifiers, thus making a strong link to recent work on semiring quantifiers in logic on words. In the process, we identify the model theoretic notion of types as the unifying concept behind this link. These results contribute to bridging the strands of logic in computer science which focus on semantics and on more algorithmic and complexity related areas, respectively.

This chapter relates the first decades of colonial interpretation of Dighton Rock after its markings were first described in 1680, mainly by John Danforth and Cotton Mather. It places the interpretation of the rock in the context of dispossession of Indigenous lands following the rebellion known as King Philip’s War. Erasure of Indigenous peoples from the history of colonial New England is discussed. It introduces contemporary theories rooted in Biblical hermeneutics of human migration and the relationship of Indigenous people to the rest of humanity, including ideas that they were descendants of Tartars, Canaanites, or the Lost Tribes of Israel. The author’s concept of White Tribism is explained.

Abstract:
Despite recent innovations in lithotripter design and technology, the first generation Dornier HM-3 electrohydraulic lithotripter remains the most effective clinical, non-invasive modality for comminuting stones. Understanding the fundamental differences between the HM-3 and more clinically practicable lithotripters is critical to achieving meaningful improvements in future models. This study aims to further clarify the role of the second, weaker pulse of the HM-3 in stone comminution by introducing a similar pulse in the pressure profile of an electromagnetic lithotripter. Additionally, this study investigates the potential for this tandem shock technique to improve comminution in electromagnetic lithotripters through optimization of the interpulse delay time.

Lippert, David, Marshall Thompson, and Charles Wienrank. Performance of Interstate Rubblization in Illinois. Illinois Center for Transportation, July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36501/0197-9191/21-005.

Full text
Abstract:
In Illinois, hot-mix asphalt overlaid concrete pavements typically exhibit reflective cracking of joints and cracks from the pavement below, resulting in shortened life and maintenance issues. Over the years, various patching, fabric, and crack and seat techniques were attempted with few positive results. This led to more aggressive techniques to eliminate the slab action of the concrete pavement where the pavement would be broken or rubblized into pieces typically less than 12 inches. Since the first rubblizing project in 1990, policy, procedures, and specifications have evolved to the point that rubblization is the mainstream option in dealing with problematic concrete pavements. This report summarizes the performance of several interstate rubblizing projects in Illinois by analyzing available data in Illinois Department of Transportation’s pavement management system. Condition rating survey data allowed the serviceability of these projects to be evaluated by surface mix types and asphalt performance grades. Traffic in the form of 18,000 lb equivalent single axle loads was determined for the projects to evaluate fatigue and rutting as well as compare section performance to the design procedure. The research team reviewed plans, design procedures, and specifications to determine best practices and identify where improvements might be made. Data showed that the use of stone matrix asphalt surface mixtures and mixes using PGXX-28 asphalt binders provides improved performance. Overall, rubblizing has shown good to excellent performance. To provide additional life with improved performance, recommendations include adopting softer asphalt grades, increasing the use of stone matrix asphalt, and improving procedures for protecting culverts.

León, Carlos. The dawn of a mobile payment scheme: The case of Movii. Banco de la República, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32468/be.1157.

Abstract:
Mobile wallets replicate physical wallets on a mobile device, in which users can store different payment instruments (e.g., cards, transfers) to make mobile payments. As the mobile wallet is adopted, a mobile payment scheme emerges, with its users as elements in a network of transfers. In this article, I study the mobile payment scheme of Movii— the first fintech firm in Colombia operating under a financial non-banking license for electronic deposits and payments. Based on a unique dataset of bilateral transfers between Movii’s mobile wallet users, I build, visualize and analyze Movii’s network, daily from November 18, 2017, to November 25, 2020. Besides the anticipated increase in the number of users and the value of transfers, the visual and quantitative complexity of the network of transfers increases over time. This increase in complexity is likely to be linked to the adoption of Movii’s mobile wallet, which results in users finding new ways to use mobile payments beyond person-to-person transfers, including person-to-business and business-to-business. Also, results suggest the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the evolution of Movii’s mobile payments scheme.
