Full textWireless communications have evolved rapidly over the past twenty years. The design of these systems face some challenges: production cost, components integration techniques, size reduction, etc. Since many years, monolithic technology and specifically the manufacturing processes of silicon circuits (CMOS and BiCMOS) offer an opportunity to overcome such difficulties. Nowadays, they allow the integration of several RF and mixed functions on a single chip. However, the design of some RF functions is still a problem. This is the case of RF filters which constitute the essential elements of GSM telecommunications system. The demanded requirements by these filters lead to study solutions of active filters because passive structures (cavity, dielectric or SAW - Surface Acoustic Wave) do not allow better performance in term of insertion losses, selectivity, size reduction and frequency tuning. In this thesis, supported by an ANR contract (SRAMM project - Systèmes de Réception Adaptatifs Multimodes Multistandards), we were interested in the study of a new topology for active LC filter using Q-enhanced inductors. Our research analysis also consisted in defining a methodology for modeling three coupled inductors and using it to implement tunable LNA filter circuit useable in GSM3G system

Full textFirst, we describe the concept of a WST-SSB filter. This is based on dynamic Bragg gratings generated inside an InP:Fe photorefractive crystal. The device's input signal is an optical carrier modulated at a radio frequency (RF) whose spectrum is double sideband (DSB). The gratings filter this DSB signal into a single sideband signal (SSB). In addition, since the DSB input signal controls the device by generating the dynamic Bragg gratings itself, the filter is wavelength-self-tunable. Second, we propose a model for the spectral response of a WST-SSB filter. Third, devices are built and characterized at both microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies. The results of these experiments confirm the filter's principle and experimental data are in good agreement with simulations. In addition, the compensation of chromatic dispersion effects is achieved thanks to WST-SSB filters. These validations are obtained by using SSB signals corresponding to 16 GHz as well as 31,5 GHz RF modulated input DSB signals. Finally, hybrid fiber-radio experiments implementing a WST-SSB filter result in eye diagram and bit error rate measurements that prove good transmission performance

Full textThis PhD Thesis presents the work that has been done to design and build, along with the evaluation of the radiometric performance, of a radiation pyrometer based on acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF). Part of this work has been given to the characterization of the acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF); however, the other part has been dedicated to the development and the optimization of the radiation pyrometer.Unlike conventional pyrometers whose spectral selection is obtained an interference filters, the AOTF that has been used in this work enables direct calibration of the radiation pyrometer using laser sources without any interference effects. This in turns allows direct calibration of the pyrometer against the cryogenic radiometer or through trap detectors with lower uncertainty levels. The spectral range selected by the AOTF is adjusted by changing the frequency applied to the filter without any mechanical movement, which is an advantage compared to grating-based systems. One of the main limitations in using AOTF is the existence of diffraction lobes which appear beyond the in-band spectral range. These lobes result in significant deterioration in the blocking capabilities of the filter, and thus an increased out-of-band signal levels are obtained. However this has been solved by using a double-pass optical configuration, which has reduced these diffraction lobes and kept them within insignificant levels. The resultant out-of-band signal levels have been found within 10-5 of the in-band signal. The reproducibility of wavelength calibration is within 0.01 nm, yet with 0.1 % reproducibility in the amplitude of the in-band signal over a course of one week. The stability of wavelength is comparable to that found in high quality monochromators. This in turns allows the use of our pyrometer in metrological applications that require high level of accuracy. The instrument spectral coverage can be tuned over a wide spectral range, between 600 nm and 950 nm. The pyrometer is also transportable as its mass is less than 20 kg and with dimensions of 90 L x 20 H x 30 W cm. The performance and metrological characterization of the pyrometer have been validated by measuring the thermodynamic temperature of the freezing point of the copper, which was in a very good agreement with that value defined by the International Temperature Scale (ITS-90)

Full textThe rapid growth of the telecommunications industry has led to a significant increase in the number of allocated frequency bands and a growing need for terminals providing access to an increasing number of standards while offering maximum services. The miniaturization of these devices combined with the implementation of additional functions has become a real challenge for the industry. The use of tunable microwave functions (filters, antennas, amplifiers ...) appears as a solution to this issue. In this way, three main technologies are mainly used: variable capacitors, tunable materials and RF MEMS. Within the scope of this thesis work, our investigations focused on tunable microwave devices like filter and antenna. The first part of our study focused on the realization of tunable planar filters in MEMS RF and SOI Technology. We made two tunable bandpass filters. The first one is a center frequency tunable bandpass two using RF MEMS switchers and the second one using tunable capacitor in SOI technology. In a second part, we focused on the realization of tunable Planar Inverted F Antenna PIFA in MEMS RF. Finally, we discussed follow-up to give to this work and outlooks

Full textWe describe theoretically different physical means for the tunability of thin film DWDM filters. We calculate the influence of the stack formula on the effective shift of the central wavelength. We emphasize on thermal, piezoelectric, electro-optic (BaTiO3 and LiNbO3) and mechanically induced strain effects. We first focus on evaporated Ta2O5 layers' microstructure (XRD and MEB analysis) with respect to substrate's temperature during EBD process. We study the link between layer's crystallinity and piezoelectric activity measured with an EFPI interferometer. We also experiment the mechanical tuning of classical DWDM filters loaded by a uniform compressive force. We finally deposit thin-film mirrors on both sides of a thin mono-crystalline LiNbO3 plate surrounded by ITO transparent electrodes, and evaluate the central wavelength shift. We conclude on an average relative shift for all physical means of about 0. 1 percent

Full textWe developed a singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator (SRO) based on a nonlinear crystal of 5%-ppMgCLN congruent lithium niobate chip and pumped at 1064 nm by an extended cavity diode laser widely tuneable from 1050 to 1070 nm injecting a 10 W Yb-fiber amplifier. It generates an idler wave between 3 and 4 µm and a signal wave between 1450 and 1650 nm. The SRO cavity is stabilized to the top of a Fabry-Perot transmission fringe. We then demonstrated a mode-hop-free idler tuning range of 500 GHz. This broad continuous tunability could be used for multi-species high resolution spectroscopy in the mid-infrared. Moreover, we have revisited the plane waves SRO theory, whose analytical solutions were given for the first time in 1969 by Kreuzer in the form of a transcendental equation, using a very powerful perturbative method which takes into account the depletion of the pump. We were able to determine the input-output relations of SRO in the form of very simple explicit relationships, showing that the output powers are proportional to the cubic root of the pump power

Full textIn communication systems, smart antennas with large frequency tunability (agility) have been gaining worldwide attention over the past few years due to the proliferation of global wireless communication standards in close proximity to one another. However, conventional solutions use electronic components which induce additional costs and make the system more complicated. Moreover, the electronic devices have moved from rigid to flexible dielectric substrates to reduce the cost and to obtain stretchability and conformability properties. The goal of this thesis is to put together these two topics. The chosen original approach consists of the mechanical reconfiguration of antenna patch printed on a soft membrane substrate with electrostatic actuation in X band, at around 10 GHz. Moreover, a new polymeric substrate was employed in this structure, the polyurethane (PU). Firstly, the technological processes required to realize the antenna patch on the PU substrate were developed. Then, the dielectric properties of polyurethane films were measured on a large frequency band in order to define the antenna patch dimensions using high frequency simulations. Finally, the first antennas patch realized and characterized have a figure of merit Frequency tunability/Voltage higher than the state of the art. Preliminary studies were also carried out to explore various feasible ways for improved the antenna systems performances

Full textThis work is concerned with MEMS optical filters and interferometers. Micromachined Bragg mirrors over SOI and silicon substrates are investigated for this purpose. The micromachined Bragg mirrors are realized by anisotropic etching of silicon using Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE), thus producing multiple vertical interfaces between silicon and air. The Bragg mirrors application to three different configurations is studied. First, we propose an all-silicon based add-drop filter. The proposed configuration employs a tilted Bragg mirror (45o), integrated with fiber grooves, where the mirror behaves as a wavelength selective reflector. Second is a tunable Fabry-Pérot cavity composed of two micromachined Bragg mirrors, where tuning is achieved by moving one of the mirrors using electrostatic MEMS actuation. A tuning range covering the telecom C-band (1525 – 1560 nm) is achieved. A high-resolution electrostatic actuator design is proposed for the accurate tuning of the cavity. A novel fabrication process is proposed where the quality of the DRIE process is enhanced in terms of sidewall surface roughness, anisotropy, loading effects and minimum under etching. The enhanced process involves a mix of Cryogenic and Bosch DRIE processes. An ultra-compact MEMS Michelson interferometer utilizing silicon Bragg reflectors over SOI is studied for the first time. Interferometer area is 150 μm X 150 μm. . A novel beam splitting technique is proposed, where a single interface is encountered during beam splitting. The proposed technique enables the realization of highly robust MEMS interferometers that are well suited for industrialization

Full textThis thesis concerns the design of tunable filter devices that can switch theirs characteristics from one standard to another in order to reduce the congestion of emission/reception chain of multi-standard systems. The most commonly used filters are acoustic filters. Indeed, these filters are difficult to be integrated in silicon technology and they remain one of the most bulky passive devices of the RF front-end. In addition, they don’t achieve good performance in insertion loss, frequency selectivity and tunability. Therefore, alternative solutions are at the origin of this thesis. An active filter is considered with the possibility of adjusting the resonance frequency: the resonant frequency of the Wifi system and the resonance frequency of the Zigbee system. Moreover, another solution is proposed in the last chapter, which consists to achieve a dual band structure of integrated active filter. This solution has the advantage to simultaneously collect data provided from the operating systems located in the two specified frequencies bands. Simulations and measurements validate the results of the realized circuits

Full textAntenna miniaturisation is a major issue, especially in the VHF band whose wavelengths are significant. Amongst the solution in the litterature, a recent theoretical technique relies upon the electrostatic resonance of negative permittivity (ENG) subwavelength spheres. In this work, the use of a plasma discharge as ENG medium is under consideration. Plasma indeed suggests new potentialities for this kind of small antennas, such as stealth and frequency agility. Firstly, several analytical models are developed to study the electromagnetic response of subwavelength realistic plasma spheres. These models further allow to derive accurate numerical representations that fit commercial electromagnetic solvers. A working prototype that comprises a plasma ignition system within the antenna structure without altering its operation is then designed. It is used to both characterize the plasma discharge and the electromagnetic behavior of the plasma spherical resonator. Finally, this work is extended to the case of planar circuits by integrating a plasma discharge inside microstrip resonators. The design, the modeling and the experimental studies of these resonators highlight the ability of the plasma to tune the resonant frequency

Full textThis thesis is split into two parts. The first part deals with the estimation of the optimum combiner. Traditionally, the optimum combiner is estimated through the estimation of both the desired signal channel and the covariance matrix of interference plus noise. In this first part, we propose to estimate the optimum combiner by estimating two separate filters, namely a filter which assumes that the transmission is noiseless (taking into account the interference but not the noise) and a filter which assumes that the transmission is no interfered (taking into account the noise but not the interference). However this method of estimation is optimal only in the case where the receiver has two antennas and/or transmission undergone a single source of interference regardless of the number of antennas. The case of a transmission with a receiver equipped with two antennas and interfered by a single source of interference, is simulated and implemented on a fixed-point DSP target in 16 bit format. The second part is dedicated to the blind channel estimation where two methods are proposed. Both methods are based on the higher order moments. The first method can be viewed as an extension of the Viterbi & Viterbi algorithm, with inter subcarrier ambiguity solving, for the case of an OFDM waveform. The second method is built around the principle of self deconvolution. In this section, an extension to MIMO systems based on a space-time pre-coding and postcoding is introduced. Finally a case of application of this extension, for a MIMO transmission system based on the IEEE 802.11 standard, is analysed and simulated

Full textRecent developments in microwave systems lead to drastic constraints on the size and cost of components, and in particularly on Passband Filters (BPF). The aim of this thesis was to provide innovative solutions for low band compact broadband filtering. We proposed two topological solutions of compactness. The first solution focuses on improving the compactness of the resonator thanks to the multisections resonator. This topology has been theorized and modeled to optimize it. The compactness provided by the multi-sections resonator has been shown by the realization of interdigital filters. The second solution is a new topology of the combline filter, electrical coupling combline filter (ECC).We have also shown that these topological solutions are compatible with other technological solutions of compactness (multilayer ...).These solutions solve the size and integration problems of current filters with equivalentelectrical performance

Full textThis work presents MEMS component applications for radio frequency and millimeter wave circuits. These components have been used for the realization of switch functions and also integrated to "classic" RF circuits, resonators and filters, in order to obtain frequency tunable circuits. Several circuits have been presented, low loss capacitive switches in Ka band, capacitive switches for high power applications and finally tunable resonators and filters. A particular study has been made so as to demonstrate microstrip tunable circuits. The measurements obtained on a two pole tunable filter using four MEMS variable capacitors show the potential of micro electromechanical components to realize high quality factor circuits

Full textThis thesis is dedicated to new frequency synthesizer architectures study, located in radio frequency emission and reception chain. The frequency synthesizer generates a frequency allowing the received or emitted signal frequency displacement (by mixer) for its treatment or its emission. There is several type of frequency synthesizer but we will focus on phase locked loop (PLL). The PLL based frequency synthesizer performances are defined by its settling time, noise, consumption and silicon area. This work is broken up into three parts: a new architecture of frequency synthesizer, composite PLL, is presented in the first part. This new architecture aims to increase the frequency synthesizer band-width in order to minimize the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) constraints in terms of noise. In the second part of the study, a new phase comparator is introduced to obtain a reference frequency higher than the synthesis step with an integer divider. This circuit is designed and measured in STMicroelectronics BiCMOS 0. 25µm technology. Into the third part, the non integer order filter is study to answer, as well as possible, the three major PLL constraints : the band-width, the phase margin and the high frequencies rejection (speed, stability and spectral purity) or to allow the filter silicon integration for the process spread immunity

Full textSince few years, the MEMS technology for microwave applications has grown up with the potential to improve the circuit and device performances. Several components have been designed and demonstrate an important reduction of loss and a higher linearity than their main counterparts: the semi-conductor components. This work investigates the MEMS switches design and their integration in tunable microwave systems. Thus, we first present a state of art of this MEMS technology and the MEMS microwave devices. The micromachined switches operation is investigated. The main advantages, drawbacks and some applications where these components could improve the performances are discussed. The second part of this work is dedicated to the mechanical and electromagnetical design of a DC contact switch. The main objective of this work was to realise a reliable component which present good performances. The switch optimisation is presented and discussed with the corresponding mechanical and electric measurements. The last part of this memory addresses the development of new switchable microwave circuit topology including DC contact micro relays. Three applications are discussed; some tunable filters are developed with a high tuning in frequency (22% for the first one and 44% for the other). We also present how to preserve the device losses to a low level, and keep high the quality factor of these systems

Full textThis work is concerned with the H∞ filtering problem in a finite frequency domain for different types of dynamic systems, such that uncertain systems, nonlinear systems via TS fuzzy model, time delay systems and systems with communication constraints. The main contribution is the development of new H∞ filter analysis and design approaches which reduce the conservatism of results found in the literature. The filter stability and design problems, for different classes of dynamic systems, are formulated as optimization problems with Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI). Simulation examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and the less conservatism of the proposed approaches in comparison with other solutions that appear in the literature

Full textThis thesis is directed at the study of the C02-pumped Mid-Infrared NH3 Chapter 1 gives some spectroscopic data for the ammonia molecule. The influence of an electric field on its rotation-vibration spectrum (Stark effect) is recalled. Chapter II which concerns the off-resonance pumping of NH3 and the development of powerful Raman sources is divided into two parts: In part A the 12 μm local gain is analyzed as a function of the main parameters. The sudy, realization and optimization of a ring CW 12 m Raman laser are described. In part B, a CW Raman amplifier is studied. A first simplified, but analytical propagation model is developed. A second numerical model is elaborated which includes both the transverse intensity profiles (Raman and pump) and the heating effects. Experiments carried out on a 12. 08 μm oscillator-amplifier system confirm the validity of this model. Scaling laws are established for high power systems. Chapter III is related to the frequency tunability of an NH3 laser with population inversion (on-resonance pumping). A rate equation model is established for the small signal gain. Results on Multiline operation and bidirectional emissions are briefly reported. The frequency tunability of the pressure-broadened emissions is inverstigated using a Fox-Smith laser cavity. The Stark tuning of the laser and the realization of a hybrid waveguide are then described. A simple line shape model is developed to interprete the experimental results

Full textOn-frequency repeaters are a cost-effective solution to extend coverage and enhance wireless communications, especially in shadow areas. However, coupling between the receiving antenna and the transmitting antenna, called radio frequency echo, increases modulation errors and creates oscillations in the system when the echo power is high. According to the communication standards, extremely weak echoes decrease the transmission rate, while strong echoes damage electroni ccircuits because of power peaks. This thesis aims at characterizing the echo phenomenon under different modulations, and proposing an optimized solution directly integrated to industry. We have turned to digital solutions especially the adaptive because of their high convergence rate and their simplicity to be implemented. The programmable circuits are chosen for their attractive price and their flexibility. When implementing echo cancellation solution, we proposed several reliable solutions, showing that digital processing is much more beneficial. For this reason, digital solutions are generalized, and the new generation of repeaters is fully digital
