Abstract:
There can be no valorisation of the truffle system without a sufficient awareness of the chain that brings the truffle from the ground to the consumer. This in fact renders explicit the link between the product and the territory of origin, eliminating disparities at the level of information between the consumer and the gatherer/producer/transformer. In this case, the value of the product is increased to the extent that along with it we also acquire the quality of the environment that produces it. The research that is presented in this volume offers valid elements of orientation, both for those working in the sector and for the public sector, to which it offers knowledge useful for the defence of the local product and for guiding sector policies.

Abstract:
The monograph summarizes and systematizes the results of experimental and theoretical studies of thermal insulation systems of building structures, technological facilities, transport facilities, and cold preservation. The criterion for the effectiveness of system insulation solutions is energy efficiency as a criterion for a comprehensive assessment, including both taking into account the direct reduction of energy costs during the operation of insulation shells, and the costs of installation, maintenance of structures in working condition, evaluation of the operational resistance of materials and durability of system solutions as a whole. Modern types of thermal insulation materials based on gas-filled plastics, foamed glass, foamed rubber and products based on mineral fibers are considered: stone wool, glass wool and glass fiber, basalt fiber. It is intended for researchers, specialists in the field of materials science, technologists — developers of new types of thermal insulation materials and constructors, designing products from them, as well as for teachers and university students. It can be useful for a wide range of people interested in construction and energy saving problems.

Abstract:
The book proposes an open and collaborative approach to the production of digital teaching contents and to teachers' professional development. Starting from an initial excursus on the undertakings of the Open Educational Resources movement and on the value of collaboration in and among schools, it deals with the topic of teacher training as a back-up to innovation processes, with particular reference to multimedia whiteboards. The theoretical reflection is integrated with the results of the AMELIS biennial project, carried out alongside a network of schools within the Innovascuola (2008-10) framework, and with a presentation of the digital teaching resources produced by the network. Completing the volume, these resources are also available on-line in the form of files and multimedia materials. Conveying the wealth of the experience, they offer teachers and educators useful resources for their teaching activities.

Abstract:
By studying the archives of the feudal Lords of Southern Italian between the 14th-16th centuries you can understand the real nature of their power and how it was expressed. The volume, which takes into account the most recent historiography, relies on the study and inventory of important documentary collections held in the Archivio di Stato of Naples, such as the Sommaria (Relevi with the files for feudal succession; Dipendenze, I, Conti erariali dei feudi and Diversi, with the seigneurial account books acquired by the State of those lord who had been rebellious or had died without heirs). The authors deal also with the cartularies (‘platee’) of aristocratic dynasties as the Ruffo and the Sanseverino, based in Calabria, and with the parchments of the Albertini from Nola. Thanks to the rich information derived by these archival series and account books, the authors bring new light on the seigneurial powers, the typology of the records produced by and for the Lords, the administration of their estates, the strategy for elaborating the family memory.

Baldini, Michela, and Teresa Spignoli, eds. L'Approdo. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-8453-617-4.

Full text
Abstract:
In December 1945 the "L'Approdo" transmissions were launched at the RAI headquarters in Florence. The radio programme, one of the most important in Italy at the time, went on the air up to 1977, being accompanied from 1952 by a magazine and from 1963 to 1972 by a television programme. The three parallel cultural "enterprises" boasted an impressive number of important collaborators, gravitating around the decisive figure of Carlo Betocchi as leader and organiser. Nevertheless, despite its significance, even the adventure of "L'Approdo" was destined to die. When the transmissions and the publication of the magazine ceased, an entire cultural élite had to come to terms not only with the objective difficulties, but with a crisis of trust and of commitment in the face of what were now irreversible changes in the country. Yet – precisely because "L'Approdo" had battled for an approach that was destined to become minority with the triumph of the new media society – the retrieval of its history and the reconstruction through voices, pages and images of one of the first examples of encounter and mediation between culture and communication appears particularly significant. The methods and the emphatic planning of the entire experience emerge clearly from the first issue of the magazine, produced here in anastatic reprint, and above all from the enclosed CD-Rom which proposes, along with the tables of contents of "L'Approdo", the files and records of the entire correspondence (over 20,000 unpublished pieces) and details of the surviving scripts of the transmissions… In short, we finally have at our disposal material that enables us to reconstruct – through the traces of a programme and a magazine and of the intellectuals who collaborated on them – thirty years of culture and utopia, of compromise and enthusiasm, clustered around the birth, growth and death of an articulated project of "cultural policy".

Shemtov, Noam. Trade Secrets and the Software Industry. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198716792.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the trade secrets regimes in the European Union and the United States, with particular emphasis on how they affect the software industry. Almost every intellectual property right originates in a secret. For example, an inventor keeps his inventive concept secret until he files for a patent. The same may apply to a designer in relation to a new product design until a registered design application or a design patent application is filed. These early stages of conception often require protection against misappropriation. The chapter considers the legal basis for granting trade secrets protection and the relevant conditions for such protection. Next, it discusses the EU and the US legal frameworks governing the misappropriation of trade secrets in relation to software products, with particular emphasis on the treatment of reverse engineering under trade secrets law.

Garrett, Merrill F. Exploring the Limits of Modularity. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190464783.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Psycholinguistic studies of language processing have revolved historically around “modular” and “interactive” accounts of language use. Experimental reports diverge in claims for the penetration of non-linguistic background information on processing for sentence comprehension. Syntactic processing effects can persist despite available contextual constraints that are sufficient to resolve temporary ambiguity or garden path errors. Nevertheless, there are multiple reports of interactive effects between basic sentence processing and both semantic and non-linguistic contextual information. The chapter suggests a rationalization of such conflicting findings in standard psycholinguistic and experimental pragmatic research, relying on interactions between language comprehension systems and language production systems. Production processes are designed to incorporate discourse and environmental constraints on linguistic formulation. These may be used to filter the products of comprehension mechanisms. A key feature of the argument for complementary roles of the two systems is a degree of modular processing for syntax to be found in both systems.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an ethnographic reading of New Deal food writing to understand the centrality of ethnic taste in 1930s sensory economies. Federal Writers' Project workers described ethnic food using well-known keywords such as “the melting pot” or “cosmopolitanism”—given the topic at hand and the pressing need to produce material, these were tempting tropes. Still, New Deal food writing coming from midwestern and western rural and industrial areas updated the paradigmatic metaphors and described a sensory cosmopolitanism where culinary encounters and working-class solidarities combined to create a cultural pluralist version of the melting pot. The chapter focuses on nodes of sensory trade such as workplaces, grocery stores, and ethnic restaurants, from foreign-themed nightclubs to working-class establishments and multiethnic diners.

Full text
Abstract:
The Conclusion links the emergence of boredom to the modernist construction of the individual as the producer of meaning in his or her own life. It explains how imperial boredom differed from domestic forms of boredom, and not only reflected changes in the empire, but was also the product of unmet expectations about personal happiness, professional fulfillment, and financial security. It asserts that expressions of boredom were veiled confessions of discontent with the empire. And, it locates imperial boredom in the ongoing debate about whether the British Empire—and by extension empire more broadly—should be regarded as a force for good in the world, suggesting, as Hannah Arendt did, that the imperial experience was fundamentally banal. It calls into question key assumptions about the British Empire, not least that it was glamorous, glorious, and filled with adventure, excitement, and opportunity. It also hints at the broader applicability of the notion of imperial boredom to empire building in the twenty-first century, as well as to the challenges of finding meaning and engagement in a world increasingly orientated around rapid stimulation.
