Full textMetal Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (MS-SOFCs) have gained significant interest due to their potential advantages (low-cost, tolerance to redox and thermal cycling and so on) over conventional fuel cells. The main objective of this thesis was to develop an intermediate temperature (500-750°C) Solid Oxide Fuel Cell on a porous metal support (MS-IT-SOFC). Two porous metallic supports in the form of compacted fibers (316L steel and FeCrAl, supplied by the local company TIBTECH, were studied in order to evaluate their physical, chemical and electrical stability and to validate their use as support for IT-SOFCs. This study leads to the selection of FeCrAl as a metallic support for IT-SOFC. The decrease of the operating temperature is partly achieved by reducing the cathode polarization resistance. This objective can be achieved either by developing new and better performing materials, or by improving the microstructure or the electrolyte/cathode or surface/interface of known materials. This thesis develops the latter approach, by improving the surface/interface of GDC/LSCF. For this purpose, three cathode architectures have been developed and characterized by impedance spectroscopy: conventional cathode (porous and thick LSCF), cathode with a thin LSCF film at the cathode-electrolyte interface, and cathode with GDC backbone infiltrated by LSCF. The influence of the last two architectures remains remarkable as their ASR is close to 0.1 Ω.cm2 at 600°C and 0.02 Ω.cm2 at 750°C. The complete MS-IT-SOFC cell with a simple cathode and GDC electrolyte has provided 421 and 523 mW/cm2 at 700 and 750°C, respectively. Thus, the goal of a metal-supported cell that can deliver 0.5 W/cm2 is achieved. On the other hand, the use of CGOCB/YSZ/CGOCB electrolyte decreased the power densities to 154 and 219 mW/cm2 at 700 and 750°C, respectively. This decrease in performance is attributed to the use of YSZ oxide, which introduces more losses at intermediate temperatures. However, the integration of a cathode with a CGO backbone impregnated with LSCF allowed to increase these values to 242 and 342 mW/cm2, demonstrating the interest of this type of cathode. All these works allowed to validate our SOFC architecture with a porous FeCrAl metal support, and to define important orientations in the choice of the electrolyte (material, thickness) and the electrodes

Full textIn terms of pipeline design for transportation of mine tailings or paste material, one of the most important rheological parameters that must be measured would be yield stress. There are numerous techniques and equipment that can be used for rheological characterization and specifically for yield stress measurements. Literature review shows that the vane method is one of the best rheometery techniques for determining the yield stress of homogeneous fluids directly.
There is also a method for calculating the yield stress from slump height. Any geometry of slump moulds, cone or cylinder, with different dimensions can be applied in this method. The standard conical slump test is basically used for controlling the workability of fresh concrete. This method was then modified for yield stress and viscosity calculation of cemented mixtures. These slump tests can be categorized as in-situ methods of yield stress measurements.
Several rheometery and in-situ experiments were carried out to measure the yield stress of two mine tailings samples in this study. A rheometer was used in controlled shear rate and controlled shear stress modes for yield stress measurements with the vane method. The results were satisfactory for cemented and non-cemented mixtures. The effect of mixing time on the yield stress of material combined with cement was also assessed using the vane method. No significant difference emerged between increased yield stress of the mixtures after 4 minutes and 12 minutes of mixing.
The accuracy of calculated yield stress values using in-situ methods was also determined by drawing comparisons between these series of data and actual yield stresses measured using a rheometer. Modified conical slump tests overestimated the values of yield stress and did not obtain reliable data for viscosity calculation of the mixtures.

Full textThe camera is the invisible which creates the visible. It is not only the representative of the director’s gaze but also a voyeur, similar to the audience in some way. We can study this invisible camera because we know how the director has used it through the images shown in the film. For analysis, we choose three items - movement, distance and angle - that can be found clearly in the film to reveal the camera. “How does the director express his intention by the camera?” Our hypothesis links the director’s intention and the application of the camera. We analyze two films : "Day for Night" by François Truffaut and "8 1/2" by Federico Fellini. These are their first film on film. We define the films that have the following characteristics as the ‘film on film’ : a fiction film, a film directed by the ‘auteur’, treatment of the process of the film production, presentation of the film in film, and the existence of director’s reflexive character. To introduce and strengthen this approach, we also analyze "Contempt" by Jean-Luc Godard as the third film to analyse in the introduction and the conclusion of the study. This study proceeds in three steps. The first step is the division of the interior world of the film related to the narrative. The second step is the statistics on the use of the camera in every shot of the film. Finally, we interpret these statistics in comparison to the division of the interior world. In this step, we want to reveal the director’s intention in his making of the film

Full textThe study follows the tradition of Cultural Studies, with a special interest in visual culture, and examines how history is being represented in different media, how these representations are interpreted by the audience, and how the outcome functions in the individual knowledge-building about this particular era. Here the notion of what is often called a collective, or cultural, memory, is important; both as a vehicle for a dominant discourse on memory and as a counterpart to individual memory, which might be more or less in agreement or opposition with the dominant. A central theme is the examination of how elements of the mythical enters a historical narrative, how they affect this, and how this is being interpreted by the audience. The media texts examined are mostly films (fiction and docudramas as well as documentaries) and computer games, although there are also some examples from role-playing games and alternative popular music. The audience part of the study consists of 11 in-depth interviews and a number of additional informants.
I propose that the media material indicates a convergence between myth in the traditional, religiously connected sense, and in the secularized sense of Roland Barthes. The former is made visible by the persistent use of elements of a clearly metaphysical nature, while the latter is made clear through the almost omnipresent authoritarian character of the media presentations. The material in its entirety clearly shows the importance of transmediality, transmedia storytelling and knowledge communities (cf Henry Jenkins) within the context. The audience examined expresses a highly critical attitude towards what is considered to be a “mainstream” media representation of World War II and Nazi Germany that – according to them – transforms the gruesome historical reality into cheap thrills and entertainment. Thus, it becomes fundamentally problematic to look upon the media representations of the theme as an expression of collective memory.

Full textThe work presented in this manuscript deals with the optimization of the process of deposition of thin films on a moving stainless steel wire. Two inverted cylindrical magnetrons (ICMs) are used to study different aspects of sputtering. At first, an analytical model allowing the evaluation of the thermal contributions to the heating of the substrate is confronted with series of measurements. The results obtained are conclusive but suffer from the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field, which is responsible for the localized loss of high energy secondary electrons. In order to limit the thermal contribution of the charges on the substrate, auxiliary anodes designed to recover the energy flow, are added to each end of the magnetrons. Their influence on the plasma distribution, the microstructure and the chemical composition of the coatings is then discussed. In a second part, the study of reactive sputter deposition with ICMs highlights the need to homogenize the magnetic field in the cathodes. A discussion is then conducted on the influence of the magnetic field on the distribution of deposition rates within the magnetrons and an analytical model, aimed at reproducing the deposition profiles, is developed on the basis of the results obtained. A parametric study (pressure, target – substrate distance, magnetic field strength) is also performed to determine optimal deposition conditions in an ICM. Finally, finite element modeling using commercial software closes the manuscript

Full textConventional embedded DRAM memory has to cope with miniaturization of access transistor and storage capacitor. Technological solutions proposed today lead to complex manufacturing process and density loss. In this context, emerging solutions appear such as embedded DRAM without additional storage element. These architectures use only one transistor to amplify and store the data. Memory charge is stored in a floating substrate. In miniaturization race, thin film device remains relevant candidate for 22 nm technology node and beyond. This thesis explores thin film transistor potential as capacitorless embedded DRAM. In a first step, electrical characteristics are carried out on FDSOI devices to demonstrate the possible programming mechanisms. Then a modeling is proposed taking into account physical phenomena occurring during memory operations. Based on a charge approach, the model is calibrated with SWB simulations. Main parasitic effects related to miniaturization, Short Channel Effects and Quantum Effects are detailed. The study is following by the modeling of dynamic memory behaviour until data retention. The model is subsequently used throug a Design Of Experiment to evaluate technological parameters impact on memory characteristics like amplitude, data retention, write and erase time. Finally, Independent Double Gate transistor proposed to solve selectivity issue of FDSOI erasing operation is discussed and technological process step are exposed

Full textThis thesis deals with partial differential equations coming from mathematical physics. Particularly, starting from 3D models for ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity, we derive 1D and 2D models via asymptotic processes based on dimensional reduction methods. The 3D model for ferromagnetism was proposed by W.F. Brown in the 40s and it is based on a system introduced by L.D. Landau and E.M. Lifschitz in 1935. About the ferroelectric model, we refer tothe papers of P. Chandra and P.B. Littlewood, W. Zhang and K. Bhattacharya and to the book of T. Mitsui, I. Taksuzaki, and E. Nakamura. This thesis based on three works:At the beginning, we consider micromagnetic energy, with some degenerating coefficients, in a thin wire. After showing the existence of minimizers, we identify the limit energy as the section of the wire vanishes. In the second part, we study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of a time dependent micromagnetic problem in a multi-structure consisting of two joined thin wires. We assume that the volumes of the two wires vanish with same rate. We obtain two 1D limit problems coupled by a junction condition on the magnetization. The limit problem remains non-convex, but now it becomes completely local. In the last chapter, starting from a non-convex and nonlocal 3D variational model for the electric polarization in a ferroelectric material, and using an asymptotic process based on dimensional reduction, we analyze junction phenomena for two orthogonal joined ferroelectric thin films. We obtain three different 2D-variational models for joined thin films, depending on how the reduction happens. We note that, a memory effect of the reduction process appears, and it depends on the competition of the relative thickness of the two films: The guide parameter is the limit of the ratio between these two small thickness

Full textCMOS platforms are heading silicon thin film to face parasitic effects blocking bulk transistor scaling. This technological option is opening the way of new non-volatile memory device architectures. This PhD study deals with thin film technology tuning to turn into dense embedded non-volatile memory working with standard circuit power supply for an easy co-integration on bulk and thin film CMOS platforms. The first proposed SQeRAM cell is based on Silicon-On-Nothing technology process flow added to bulk CMOS core process. The resulting memory point presents charges stored at the opposite interface of inversion layer. This memory device is quasi-non-volatile due to a thin ONO stack allowing 3V only power supply. A semi-analytical model is developed to describe Independent Double Gate transistor considering electrons, holes and doping level. By the association of this approach with a charge-sheet Bulk transistor model, SQeRAM physical phenomena are detailed. In addition technological optimization is discussed to allow double-bit applications. SQeRAM scaling limitations, particularly technological process control, leads me to imagine another new non-volatile memory point built on a pure thin film IDG transistor. Concept, realization and specificities are described. The associated model developed drives physical mechanisms analysis of the main electrical characteristics versus trapped charge density. At last my PhD thesis brings up the guidelines of a new hybrid memory based on silicon thin film device combining non-volatile storage and floating body properties of the 1T-DRAM

Full textFor more than 50 years, microelectronic industry is driven by a race to the miniaturisation of its central element, the MOS transistor, to improve the integration density, the performances and the cost of the electronic integrated circuits. Since the adoption of 100nm node, the only reduction of the dimensions of the transistor is no more sufficient and new technological modules (use of strain, high-k/metal gatestack…) have been introduced. However, conventional MOSFET, even opimized, will soon be unable to reach the specifications, always higher, of new technologies. Then, new structures should be considered to help and, finally, to replace the BULK technology. In this context, the work concerns the study, the fabrication and the electrical characterization of the thin film devices : Localized-SOI (LSOI) and planar gate-all-around (GAA). The obtained resultats point out the interest of such devices which allow the reduction of the leakage current (and thus the consumption), an excellent control of electrostatics and are able to work with an undoped channel while offering very good static performances. Impact of (110) substrates on transport properties in LSOI transistors is also studied. This work focuses on the integration of a full low-power platform, what induces the possibility of an hybrid integration with BULK devices and to offer several threshold voltages, everything on the same chip

Full textThe studied resonator is part of an industrial project carried by NXP Semiconductors. The objective is the realization of a integrable RF MEMS resonator in order to replace quartz in some applications. The compatibility of the manufacturing process with the technologies used by the company and low cost production represent the main challenges of the project. The resonator TFEAR (Thin Film Elongation Acoustic Resonator) is a bar, consisting of a superposition of thin film type Metal/AlN/metal. The piezoelectric properties of aluminum nitride (AlN) are exploited : the application of an alternating electric field, parallel to the thickness of the bar, resulting in propagation of acoustic waves along its length. The sizes of the manufactured resonators correspond to resonant frequencies between 10MHz to 50 MHz. This thesis focuses on modeling and electrical characterization of the TFEAR resonator. The models are developed by 3D numerical simulations and by 1D analytical calculations. The electrical behavior of TFEAR is described by an equivalent circuit which elements are expressed in terms of physical parameters and losses of the constituent materials. A quality factor of 2250 on a 25.79MHz resonant TFEAR which motional resistance is 2.1 kOhms has been noticed. These measurements were completed by the characterization of the physical parameters of the piezoelectric layer. For example, piezoelectric coefficient d33;f values were recorded up to 2.6 pm/V (for a theoretical maximum of 3.93pm/V)

Full textThis thesis discusses the modeling of growth and dissolution of confined crystals. We focus on the dynamics within lubricated (or hydrophilic) contacts and derive a thin film continuum model accounting for diffusion, surface kinetics, hydrodynamics, surface tension and interactions with the substrate (disjoinining pressure). First, we study dissolution induced by an external load (pressure solution). We find the functional form of the disjoining pressure -finite or diverging at contact- to be crucial in determining steady state dissolution rates and morphologies. These forms respectively lead to load-dependent or load-independent dissolution rates, and to flat or pointy surface profiles.Second, we considered crystal growth in the vicinity of a flat wall. We found that a cavity appears on the confined crystal surface. We obtain a non-equilibrium morphology diagram in agreement with experimental observations. When crossing the transition line, a cavity can appear continuously or discontinuously depending on the form of the disjoining pressure (repulsive or attractive). For nanometric film thicknesses, viscosity can hinder the formation of the cavity. Finally, we study the force of crystallization exerted by a crystal growing between two flat walls. We point out the importance of a precise definition of the contact area to define the thermodynamic equilibrium pressure. During growth, the triple-line undergoes a kinetic pinning transition depending solely on the ratio between the diffusion constant and the product of the surface kinetic constant and distance between the walls. After this transition, the crystallization force decreases to zero, and a macroscopic film forms

Full textThis thesis presents a theoretical and experimental work on nanoscale flows of polymer melts. Different leveling dynamics emerge from the analytical and numerical study of the reflow of a polymer film that is first nanoimprinted and then annealed above its glass transition temperature, depending on the initial topography of the film. These concepts were applied to the manufacturing of optical devices from the reflow of complex nanostructures. A method to measure the Newtonian viscosity and the terminal relaxation time of a thin polymer film was also developed. Finally, an exploratory work on a residual-layer-free nanoimprint process based on dewetting is presented. Emphasis was put on the accurate computation of the disjoining pressure in stratified media with the modern Lifshitz theory based on the optical properties of the interacting materials
