Abstract:
The United States film industry is controlled by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and its six signatories--the major productions studios (Sony, Warner Brothers, Universal, Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox, Time Warner), and through this joint-partnership they have monopolized prime production, distribution, exhibition and classification of the U.S film market. The objective of this project is to shed light on biases present in the MPAA rating system's treatment of sex and violence under the X/NC-17 rating in order to demonstrate the lack of viability of the system in today's world.

Abstract:
Traditional documentary films, particularly science and natural history works, presume to authentically or legitimately convey accurate representations of historical events that actually occurred at a prior time. Factual and convincing representations are not necessarily congruent, and a film's merit of authenticity is often based on the perceived validity of the visual content represented. While visual imagery dominates a presentation's general delivery, a film's sound design is a fundamental structural element that is often overlooked or less scrutinized with regard to factual or accurate recounting of these same historical events. The purpose of this thesis is to examine methodologies of sound acquisition and reproduction and to discuss how various acoustic contents are perceived in relation to associated visual elements. While discerning viewers may notice critical discrepancies in picture contents that may invalidate a film's credibility, a complex matrix of sonic elements does not lend itself to deconstruction as easily. Thorough analysis of a science and natural history film must include an examination of its complete sound design. Consideration must be given to the ethical implications of using any synthesized or borrowed audio tracks if such a work is to be considered as "factual" documentary. The standards of acceptance or rejection should be no different than those associated with fabricating unnatural or contrived visual contents, no matter how compelling may be the end product.

Aragón, Pablo. "Characterizing online participation in civic technologies." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/668042.

Abstract:
This thesis constitutes one of the first investigations focused on characterizing online participation in civic technologies, a type of platform increasingly popular on the Internet that allows citizens new forms, on a larger scale, of political participation. Given the opportunities of civic technologies in democratic governance, it should be noted that their design, like that of any online platform, is not neutral. The ways in which information is presented or interaction between users is allowed can greatly alter the results of participation. For this reason, we analyze the impact of different interventions in civic technologies in relation to online conversation views, ordering criteria for ranking petitions, and deliberative interfaces. Since these interventions were carried out by the corresponding development teams, the analyses have required to develop novel computational and statistical methods, while also extending generative models of discussion threads to better characterise the dynamics of online conversations. Results of the different case studies highlight the social and political impact of these interventions, suggesting new directions for future research and the need to develop a paradigm of citizen experimentation for democracy.

The object of this research is to investigate the cinema produced in Goiás specifically in the film by João Bennio (1927-1984) Simeão, o boêmio (1969), from its sociocultural and historical relevance and from interpretations constituted by a discussion group, formed by eight students and three professors of the Social/Audiovisual Communication Course at Universidade Estatual de Goiás. In order to discuss the possible relations between public and film producer, seven meetings with the discussion group have been called and happened in two phases. The first encompassed six meetings organized with the project proposal presentation; film projection and discussion; argumentation with the group based on various images which relate to the film and our trajectories and affection; creation and realization of a visual narrative derived from those images and their interpretations. The second phase consisted of only one gathering intended for presenting the result obtained with the the finalized visual narrative to the discussion group. Considering that the relations between the spectator and the film are part of the social practices in a constant relationship between teaching and learning, the viewer is thought of not as a passive consumer, but as a main character who produces social value and cultural languages, integrating the complexity of the contemporary society complexities. I consider that the histories described in this paper have not been concluded, still they bear some reserve for other possible histories yet to come and many more.

This dissertation is about audio description (AD), a subject included in the field of audiovisual translation (AVT), more specifically in the area of intersemiotic translation. AD is the transformation of image into verbal text, i.e., of visual code into auditory code, and is performed on cultural products in order to make them accessible to visually impaired people, a spectrum that includes congenital blindness, acquired blindness and low vision. Even though AD can occur in different products, this study will be limited to motion pictures, in two different dimensions — one fundamentally theoretical and the other practical — that are interrelated and influence each other. In the first dimension, a discussion about interpreting and describing is triggered by the requirement of limiting interpretation to a minimum. Norms in general establish the search for objectivity in order to prevent manipulation or paternalistic attitudes, thus avoiding subjective choices, usually related to the use of qualifiers. Frequently, both lay people and specialists still conceive describing and interpreting as a dichotomy, and prioritize description, seen as objective, over interpretation, considered as subjective and valuational. The study aims at deconstructing this dichotomy by means of a many-valued logic that acknowledges the empirical need for the terms description and interpretation, but criticizes the absolutizing and excluding senses attributed to them. In the second, more empirical dimension, audio descriptions of characters gestures — understood as mimicry and emotional states — were subjected to reception analysis. Gestures were chosen because there has been little or no study at all about them and because they are quite convenient when it comes to reflecting upon the recommendations of not interpreting or of limiting interpretation to a minimum. The research aimed at determining whether more interpretive audio descriptions may be necessary, or even indispensable, to the enjoyment of motion pictures, and also whether, according to the type of visual impairment, there are different preferences for less or more descriptive or interpretive ADs. The study included two groups, one made up of students from the Benjamin Constant Institute (IBC) and another of members of the Associação dos Deficientes Visuais do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Association of the Visually Impaired of Rio de Janeiro) (ADVERJ). The group of IBC students watched the film O palhaço (The clown), and the members of ADVERJ watched the film Menos que nada (Less than nothing); after that they were individually interviewed and answered a questionnaire with questions pertaining to the comprehension of the film itself and aspects specific to gestures. They also watched four passages of the movies again, one for each type of gesture (substitutive, divergent, simple and complex affect displays); each passage had two AD versions — one more descriptive and another more interpretive, with more adjectives and adverbs —, so that they could choose the version they preferred. The proposal, then, was to test theoretical conclusions in an empirical context of strictly visual information and to reflect upon AD characteristics that may be more adequate to Brazilian audiences in Rio de Janeiro, specially gesture AD. In its initial part, the dissertation presents a historiography of AD both as an activity and as an object of investigation. It also shows how AD came to be present in the different spheres of the media and the academy in Europe, the United States and Brazil.

Abstract:
We study interdependencies in spousal labor supply and the effectiveness of intrahousehold insurance in a sample of married couples, where the husband loses his job due to a mass layoff or plant closure using data from the Austrian Social Security Database. We show that in our sample of relatively young couples the shock hits households at crucial stages of family formation, which requires careful modeling of the wives' counterfactual lifecycle labor market patterns. In our empirical analysis, we propose three independent control groups of unaffected households to identify the causal effects of husbands' displacement on wives' labor supply. Our empirical results show that husbands suffer large and persistent employment and earnings losses over the first 5 years after displacement. But wives' labor supply increases only moderately and they respond predominantly at the extensive margin. The implied participation elasticity with respect to the husband's earnings shock is very small, about -0:04. While the wives' earnings gains recover only a tiny fraction of the household income loss, public transfers and taxes are a more important insurance at least in the short run. In terms of non-labor market related outcomes, we find a small positive effect on the probability of divorce, but no effect of the husband's job displacement on fertility. The presence and ages of children in the household are crucial determinants of the wife's labor supply response. The most responsive group are mothers, who are planning to return to the labor market after a maternity break, while mothers of very young children or wives without children remain unresponsive. We thus conclude that Austria's strong gender identity norms are an explanation for the limited scope of intra-household insurance.

Abstract:
The architectural firm of Pierre and Wright was one of the most important partnerships in Indianapolis during the second quarter of the twentieth century and the firm left a lasting impact on Indianapolis's built environment and physical development. Edward Dienhart Pierre (May 22, 1890-March 27, 1971) and George Caleb Wright (April 25, 1889-February 27, 1973) merged their talents in August 1925. This partnership resulted in a series of substantial commissions which allowed Pierre and Wright to take leadership roles in the Indianapolis construction community. The design contributions of Pierre and Wright to Indiana, particularly to Indianapolis, are significant because of the wide variety of architectural styles in which they worked, the high quality of construction, and the number of structures which remain. The partnership ended in 1944 and both men continued their architectural careers in Indianapolis. Pierre and Wright worked throughout their lives to enhance their profession and their community. The most obvious evidence of their professional work is the many buildings they designed, but more important is the impact Pierre and Wright had on the design and construction professions in Indiana and the country. Examples of their influence include their work for standardized building codes, development of professional ethics and forums for professional networking, and advocacy of comprehensive urban or metropolitan planning.

Smith, Katie. "Liminal Butlers: Discussing a Comic Stereotype and the Progression of Class Distinctions in America." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2007. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1286.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will prove how the male domestic servant shows a conservative evolution of class freedom through early American films. As an individual thrust into a liminal sphere, these characters paradoxically become a character type for both keeping class-consciousness as well as breaking up notions of class, albeit in a slow process. In comedy, domestic male servants have always been on duty to help their masters while also becoming sources of mischief as tricksters. In early American films, these characters embody the anxiety of a classless body of men who become scapegoats, trickster-figures, and mask-wearing sages in order to survive—attracting as many functions as possible in order to help society question notions of class. Although butlers and valets have existed for several centuries, the Victorian era molded the butler into a marginal existence, trapping this servant into a liminal, and therefore unlikable, sphere. Comedic writers in the Victorian era played the anxiety up—presenting butlers and valets as pompous and unintelligent scapegoats placed in texts to make their masters look good while becoming invisible themselves. Yet, by the time the stereotype reached America through P. G. Wodehouse, the butler became a trickster figure—ready to use the Victorian code as a way to gain monetary compensation and control of the private domain. Jeeves does in fact receive his desires, but he resorts back to set codes—becoming a character that subverts and maintains class structure simultaneously. Charlie Chaplin's butler in City Lights does the same in film. As the overly serious foil, Chaplin's butler controls the class hierarchy by keeping Chaplin away from his master; yet, the butler does this by copying his master's actions, putting himself on the same level as his master. It is only through Sturges films that butlers become relatively free from subordination and even more multivalent as these films delve into class reality versus desire. These butlers and valets continue to play the part of the Victorian butler, but they also become the pivotal characters that move plots in their intended course—becoming fatherly and less anxiety-ridden—creating a freedom unknown to their predecessors.

Morawetz, Norbet. "The rise of co-productions in the film industry : the impact of policy change and financial dynamics on industrial organization in a high risk environment." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/3469.

Full text
Abstract:
The main aim of this study is to examine the interrelationship of finance and government intervention in explaining the rise of co-productions in the international film industry in the time period between 1997 and 2004. Mainstream economic geography literature presents the film industry typically as a case study for embeddedness and agglomeration effects, with successful industry clusters drawing their strength from process knowledge, networks and local interaction. However, there is an increasing disparity in the literature between what mainstream theory suggests, and what empirical studies find with respect to the importance of cluster-external relations and dynamics. This, as I will argue, is particularly evident when looking at the picture of the whole film industry production system that emerges from the literature, which fails to include the alternative and complimentary pattern of co-productions. Co-productions are collaborations between film producers from at least two different countries, pooling their resources across distance to produce a feature film project. In the past fifteen years, the number of films made as co-productions has risen continuously in Europe, with co-productions accounting for more than 30 per cent of European film production activity. As a mode of production based on temporary, cross-border collaboration that is supported in its coordination by temporary clusters, such as trade fairs and industry events, the coproduction phenomenon poses a conundrum to economic geography literature and challenges its explanatory framework. As I will argue, in order to arrive at a satisfactory understanding of the phenomenon, it is necessary to look beyond social factors associated with locality, and to examine instead dynamics impacting on the industrial organization of the whole production system. I will argue that in the context of the pervasive demand uncertainty characterizing the film industry, the analytical focus should be on financial dynamics, as production activity and its organizational form are ultimately dependent on finance as an enabling force. Based on a description of the film financing process as the primary process in which the relationship between the economic categories of financial and production capital are played out, I propose that in order to explain the growth of co-productions empirically, it is necessary to examine changes in the film financing environments of the increasingly interrelated European and US film industries. As the State is the most important provider of financial capital in the European film industry through the provision of public aid, the focus will lie in particular on the consequences of a paradigm change in the rationale of State intervention in Europe moving away from funding film for cultural reason, to supporting the industry on economic grounds since the mid 1990s. As will be shown, the most important consequence of this paradigm change has been the introduction of tax incentives to encourage investment into film in a number of European and international countries within a short period of time. As will be demonstrated, this has led to the formation of significant, locally confined capital pools that can dis-embed production; and to the emergence of a distinct capital cycle in international film financing, which has strongly impacted on the productive system of the film industry. Finally, a dynamic explanation for the growth of co-productions in Europe in the time period between 1997 and 2004 will be provided. I will argue that co-productions have firstly grown in order to overcome a lack of finance, but have in the context of a capital cycle based on tax incentives from Germany and the UK, increasingly become driven by the opposite dynamic, namely an abundance of financial capital seeking profitable investment opportunities. The study will conclude with a discussion of policy implications, a summary of contributions to the literature and a brief overview of future research opportunities.

Wonder Woman character is acknowledgedly feminist and figured, along with Superman and Batman, one of DC Comics's top superheroes. She is the female's best-known female superhero. However, it was only in 2017, 75 years after its release, that the character gains a cinematographic work of its own. With the advent of information technology and the appropriation of the spaces of social networking sites, the theme of feminism has been gaining strength and has been widely discussed. This study analyzes the discussion on social networking sites on gender issues, in relation to the Wonder Woman movie release, in four publications on the official Facebook page. We investigated, in the comments on the release of the film, the presence of a debate on feminist issues, in order to identify the topics discussed. The idea is that the film would be able to mobilize discourses about female empowerment. We trace a brief history of how gender issues have been discussed from the 1930s to the present day. We discuss how gender studies are understood today and about the presence of feminism on the Internet. Questions about power and discourse were brought to the fore anchored in the precepts of Bourdieu (1996) and Foucault (2013), who describe elements to be considered in speech production as being a product of power relations in a society. We understand language as a form of naturalizing power through the concept of habitus (BOURDIEU 1989), and we consider it as one of the ways of perpetuating gender inequality. We recourse to Recuero (2012, 2014) to describe computer mediated communication and its relevant aspects for the analysis of this study, understanding it as a social product, capable of simulating elements of oral conversation. We understand, as Herring (2001), that textual communication is part of the discourses that come to construct behaviors. Thus, we use theoretical and methodological contributions of the Computer Mediated Analysis Discourse, developed by Herring (2001, 2004) in an attempt to find patterns capable of indicating the presence of a discussion about female empowerment, as well as to identify other recurrent patterns of discourse.

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the effect of U.S. firms’ geographic location, whether urban or rural, on their corporate disclosure and governance practices. An “urban” firm is one that is headquartered in a large metropolitan area; whereas, a “rural” firm is one that is headquartered some distance from any metropolitan area. Specifically, the study examines whether there are different stock market reactions to urban and rural firms around key event dates relative to the enactment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) on July 30, 2002. Also, the readability and linguistic style in the Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) section of public company’s annual reports (Form 10-K) to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are investigated to determine whether urban and rural firms communicate information differently to investors.

There are times in life when we regret for things we have done due to the wrong decisions made. We always wonder if we could reverse time and make another choice; could the results somewhat differ? Based on this concept, the paper applies “Formalist film theory,” “three-act structure of scripture” and “discourse on restrictions in traveling through time and space” as the theoretical foundation of the paper. Moreover, the paper adopts the concept of “traveling through time and space” to conduct the writing and filming of this micro-film script. The characters of the film use the cognition and knowledge possessed now to change the lamenting results in the past into the results the characters desire today. Nonetheless in spite of the correction made from traveling through time and space, the results were unsatisfying while the same things occurred in the past repeat again. For this reason, there is no cure for regret and opportunity for repetition but creativity is the infinite imaginary world without borders and hence impossibility does not exist in such a world. The artist will uphold to the initial intent and continue to produce works in the creative kingdom of micro-films.

In this study, a simple mechanical model modified from the Stoney formula is presented for the calculation of residual stresses in thin films. The Stoney formula was derived based on the assumption of equi-biaxial residual stress in thin films. According to the experiments in previous researches, this assumption is not always true. In the present analysis, the residual stresses can be different in x-axis and y-axis; thus, a set of new formulas are derived instead of a single Stoney formula. Different thin film structures are investigated to demonstrate the differences between the results obtained by the Stoney formula and those by the present method. The proposed method should be more accurate than the Stoney formula in the stress calculation of such films.

Heat transport in 30–300 nm thick dielectric films is characterized in the temperature range of 74–300 K using the 3ω method, which is a simple method to measure the cross-plane thermal conductivity of dielectric thin films. Dielectric film samples of two kinds, deposited on Si substrates using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and grown by thermal oxidation, were measured in the cryogenics system. The apparent thermal conductivity, intrinsic thermal conductivity, and interface resistance have been analyzed in different environment temperature. The measured data with this method were verified with the measurement results from published data, which showed satisfactory agreement. For this experiment, we discovered the thermal conductivity of PECVD SiO2 films was smaller than the conductivity of SiO2 grown by thermal oxidation, because the porosity of thermal SiO2 is smaller than PECVD SiO2. The apparent thermal conductivity of SiO2 films decreases with film thickness. The thickness dependent thermal conductivity is interpreted in terms of a small interface thermal resistance RI. For SiO2 films, the thermal conductivity decreases if the temperature decreases, because the mean free path of heater carriers increases. 3ω method combined with the cryogenics system could not only measure the thermal conductivity of SiO2 accurately, but also treat the influence of thermal conductivity on different temperature environment. In the future, we could broaden the use of this combination to measure other thin films.

The capital is one of the main issues of film industry in Taiwan. Although the government has practically provided kinds of strategies of capital guidance fund and film companies also have raised funds through different financial ways, there is still a lack of references for the government to operate guidance fund strategies and for investors to make investment when there is not enough realistic investigation of Taiwanese people’s film viewing behavior and film investing behavior. With literature reviews and questionnaire survey, this study is aimed to provide information for the government and investors in terms of Taiwan’s film industry investment. According to the result, most candidates go to see movies about 5 to 7 times of a year. ‘General audience’ prevails in movie rating system, and people’s highest preference is action movies. The main factors considered for watching movies are ‘scripts or plots’, ‘visual effect or incidental music’, or ‘evaluation from professional film review’. According to actual film viewing experiences, most people have seemed a Taiwanese movie ‘Café•Waiting•Love’, and factors of choosing movies are ‘scripts or plots’, ‘types’, and ‘visual effect or incidental music.’ Based on the study, most candidates are willing to invest the film industry, but they do not have experience of investment. Most candidates want to invest a Taiwanese movie ‘Dadaocheng,’ and the factors that affecting their investment behavior are ‘visual effect or incidental music’, ‘evaluation from professional film review’, and ‘box office’. Investors are willing to offer capital support by private equity, and ‘the director’s awareness’, ‘promotion strategies’, ‘actors’ awareness’ might cause them not to make an investment.

It is well known that material prosperities will be different as the material in micro and nano scale. For instance, the effect of interface boundary and the carriers such as phonon and free-electron scattering have become the primary issue in thin film material. In this study, measurements of thermal conductivities of phase change memory material and several dielectric films by 3ω method is investigated. However, the limitation of 3ω method restricts the film thickness under 1 μm. For film thickness of 1um to 1 mm, further studies of pertinent measuring methods such as parallel-strip method and thickness difference method are constructed. Parallel-strip method is suitable for film thickness of 50 nm to 2 μm. The intrinsic thermal conductivities and boundary thermal resistances of three kinds of SiO2 films are measured, in which these specific SiO2 films are fabricated by PECVD deposition, thermal furnace growing and E-bean deposition respectively. In addition, thickness difference method is suitable for thick films where film thickness is in a range of 10 μm to 1 mm. The intrinsic thermal conductivities of three kinds of SU8-3050 thick films are also measured, in which the thickness of these specific SU8-3050 films are 42, 70 and 95 μm respectively. In short, the objective of this work provides three methods which thermal conductivities and boundary thermal resistance of dielectric films are characterized and are verified with the theory and literatures.

Most of the current chatbot's dialogue design do not use a corpus because the cost is very high. When the user asks the chatbot some kind of related keywords, the chatbot usually directly responds with a dialogue answer which has existed in the database even if it is less attractive to consumers. In fact, if the stores can provide the customer service software to chat with the customers in anytime, they will be able to find out the user's preferences. In this paper, PTT movie bulletin board is used as a resource to carry out Natural Language Processing to obtain a film corpus. The web crawler is used to crawl the contents of the movie themes discussed by the netizens. The contents were first processed by the Jieba word-breaking algorithm to produce the film corpus. In order to improve the accuracy of the system, this paper combines the corpus of search and generative architecture. There are two modes. The search model is the default mode. When the user asks about the related movie theme derived from the PTT movie board discussion, the model question-and-answer pairing uses the BM25 applicability judgment method to determine whether to output the corresponding words in the search model corpus. If the condition of BM25 judgment is not met, the Seq2Seq model is adopted and the trained movie question answering module will provide the sentence derived from the generated corpus. In brief, the search-generation architecture dialogue system allows chatbots and users to discuss more movie knowledge topics interactively. Furthermore, compared to the old version of the chatbot in which Dialogflow and wit.ai custom modules are required to produce Q&A, this paper can reduce the setting process about the tedious work of intents and entities rules.

Abstract Aluminum Nitride(AlN) films are highly attractive due to their excellent piezoelectricity, high surface acoustic wave velocity, large energy gap and good temperature stability. It has been a good choice to develop AlN high frequency acoustic wave devices as well as GaN-base MIS-FET with AlN as dielectrics. In addition, since AlN has been the buffer layer between GaN and Sapphire for optoelectronics, to decrease the cost of process and the defects of materials and to integrate photoelectric and electric devices, AlN may be able to play the role of buffer layer for the growth of GaN on Si. The aim of this thesis is to deposit highly quality (002)AlN films on SiO2/Si(100) 、Si(111) and GaN/Sapphire substrates using Helicon sputtering, to accomplish the above mention application. The Helicon Sputtering System is a magnetron sputter system enhanced with an inductivity coupled rf plasma, in which the plasma can be sustained in a gas atmosphere of 10-4Torr. Since the mean free path of the atoms can be increased, using this “MBE like” sputtering process can produce a smooth surface. Highly textured smooth (002)AlN films have been successfully deposited on SiO2/Si(100) 、Si(111) and GaN/Sapphire substrates in low-pressure(1mTorr) of Helicon sputtering system. The FWHM of (002)AlN films are 2.55∘、2.3156∘and 0.9102∘,and the R.M.S. roughness are 9.23Å、4.75Å and 8.79Å, respectively. The deposition process as well as the model of growth mechanism are established and discussed. Keywords: AlN, Helicon sputter, low pressure

In recent years, portable mobile is popular, including smart phones, tablet PCs, it’s a big market value in world. With the development of high-tech electronic products, the quality of parts in mobile is more and more important ,the main film material of flexible printed board in mobile is PI(Polyimide) until now, but the Water absorption and Dielectric properties of PI is poor in high frequency. the other material”Liquid Crystal Polymer” ,it’s Water absorption and Dielectric properties is better than PI,but it’s price is also higher than PI. Cause the molecular structure of LCP is ramdomly and have rigid rod molecular, make LCP have extremely low melt viscosity, this characteristic make LCP difficult to process in film laminating and blowning. Since the molecule of LCP is rigid, the rigid-rod molecules are easily aligned in the same direction of the shear stress, and be strongly oriented in one direction(Anisotropic), Anisotropic make LCP flim strength have a big difference between transverse(TD) and machine direction(MD),therefore, making biaxially-oriented LCP film and stably has became trend. This study use Extrusion to make LCP film, because the Anisotropic, this study use film blowing which processing have transverse direction extension, LCP have extremely low melt viscosity, it’s hard to blowing nd become film, therefore, this study use Three-layer co-extrusion blown film machine, use A/B/A method, let HDPE be inside and outside layer、LCP be middle layer, HDPE has high melt viscosity can carry LCP and support LCP become film, he HDPE layer can reduce the cooling speed of LCP layer, make the processing easy, by the way, LCP and HDPE is incompatible, so the 3 layer film can separate easily, than get the LCP film. This study use Inflate(blowing)、Thermoforming, make the LCP film Biaxially, the result shows Inflate is not very effective,; Thermoforming transform the orient angle, the bigger of the angle, the MD tensile strength smaller, the TD tensile strength bigger,if the orient angle become 90∘,MD and TD tensile strength close to the same。

In this thesis, through the short animation film The Dooor, it is going to explore how to use the symbol "door" for animation creation. Via Semiotics and Film Semiotics , we could understand, analyze, and categorize other art works that also use "door" as symbol, learning how to convert the symbol into the connotation of the creation, then applying them to the genuine art works. Symbol "door" are frequently used in flat painting, video, interactive games and literature. According to different mediums of expression, it can convey diverse senses of signification. Animation combines story and image. And the symbol possesses more weight on the presenting of pictures, which will strengthen and extend the thinking of the story. No language barrier and the performance practices that do not fall into too straightforward will allow works with richer sensuous planes and thinking.

Super-reality is the abnormality in reality; it is the product of irrational logic hardly comprehensive and sympathetic for people. Dream is the prelude before the wish comes true. When one fails to balance and find an outlet for the bursting emotions in subconsciousness, escape and concentration action tends to occur in the dream easily. For super-reality and dream land, the similarity lies in exploring human desires in their minds through the psychoanalytical process, which produces the first impact of creation- exploration in dreams. Image is a kind of simulacrums in visual sense. It carries the meaning of symbols that can be rejected and transformed into language delivered by vision in accordance with personal emotions. As for multiple media animation, it is one of the creative expression techniques with highly experimental spirit. On the other hand, cross creative forms combine the material and the media. Both of image and multiple media animation possess the experimental property in delivering language via visual sense, leading to the second impact in creation phase- integration of expression techniques. Moreover, image perspective accounts for the influence of narrative structure on the angle people regard events. It observes viewpoint by objective and subjective lens instead of human eyes. Meanwhile, montage refers to multiple iterative reconstruction that endows fresh implication on the images by right-and-left permutation and combination. There is interconversive relationship between image perspective and montage. By means of the characteristics of the lens’ language, image events are narrated from different viewpoints, which forms the impact in the third phase—visual perspective reconstruction. The experimental animation “Wormhole” is an approach that launches communication between the self and the mind. It pass through the past, now, and future in process of saving memory in the brain. Conversion of time and space not only endows true feelings but also covers imaginary space. We have many facets to analyze and probe into in regard of super-reality’s pursuit of the unknown world and the inner feelings. Through the three phases before creation, we expect to correct the creative thoughts via rational “conflict” to endow the animated short film with the most sincere emotions by visual language.

The X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)、Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and time-of-flight–secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) results provided a significant evidence that iridium oxide bond with protein by coordinate covalent Bond with the Nitrogen (N) atoms. In electro-stimulation release part the continuous or step biphasic pulse (120Hz、 ±1mA) releasing show the hybrid film had the drug release behavior. The study of food films and documentaries has, since the 1980s, begun to be noticed in the scholarship. According to some literature review, the scholarship on food films focused largely on analysis of food representations in individual films. This aspect of research usually explored the symbolic role or metaphoric role of food and food behaviors play in cinematic narratives and images. The results of the research indeed affirmed that “films’ narratives and images are a legitimate means of observing the changing structures of social interdependence and shifts in cultural identity” (Ferry, 2003, p. 2). However, the success of this aspect of research suggests that there is even more that could be done in this burgeoning area. The study intends to review a decade’s food films selected and demonstrated in Berlin International Film Festival from 2007 to 2016. In the literature review section, 171 food films including new and old food documentaries and short and feature food films from all over the world have been briefly introduced. Also the previous overarching frameworks used to analyze the food films have been reviewed. In order to find out the main themes demonstrated the real roles of food play in people’s life, the researcher have watched the 171 films and studied related reviews, journal articles, and book chapters on these documentaries and films. The researcher also conducted a systematic research synthesis on them. Using Glaser and Strauss’ Grounded Theory (1967) constant comparison method, the researcher did comparative reviews on these documentaries and films. Four main themes emerged from the synthesis are: (1) It is the time to disclose the desire and awakening of human beings for nature and healthy food and for fair and just food; (2) The eternity of human beings is built on the sustainable ecology and biological diversity; (3) The persistence, creativity and ideals of the cooks are the driving force for human food culture transmission and inheritance;(4) Food is the origin of emotional communication between human life and all things. It is anticipated the research results can provide Taiwanese scholars and educators of food culture with a general overview of the current global food culture issues, so that they would study and teach food culture in a broader perspective. It is also expected that the analysis on the 171 selected food films can inspire more Taiwanese film makers and producers to shoot profound and far-reaching dietary documentaries or dramas to spread the long history and plenty of Chinese food culture. By doing so, it is hoped that Taiwanese can sincerely look at the current global concern of the various food issues and its connection to Taiwan society.

Animated movies provide people with imaginative play and entertaining satisfaction for all ages. Hayao Miyazaki's fantasy animation is one of the leaders. Aboundant animated films are adapted from the literary works. What are the tricks and ways to reproduce the personalities and styles of the adapted characters? Two of Hayao Miyazaki's animation works are adapted from the famous fantasy novels. "Howl's Moving Castle" is one of them. Due to the successful adaptation, creating the charming personalities of characters, the animation becomes a hit and makes a good example to explore novel adapted animation. In order to investigate the process of adaptation, this study sets Hayao Miyazaki's animated adaptation of "Howl's Moving Castle" as an example, summarizing the systematic reproduction model. The study begins with an analysis of the literature reviews, focusing on the character's personality style and narrative context. Then, the study probes how Miyazaki converts rich text imageries in novels to vivid and colorful animated visual images. This study adopts qualitative research methods. The apply of narrative modeling systematically deconstructs the characters through out the novel. The study is combined with semiotics interpreting and verifying the role of visual animation modeling. The use of character design also verifies and sums up the reproduction system modeling of characters' personalities and styles in the novel adapted animation. The main discussion are as follows: 1. The deconstruction of narrative theme of role modeling and the analysis of two-axis structure and composition; 2. The secondary symbol system operation; 3. The spheres of action analysis; 4. The role modeling imagery integration; 5. The shape policy setting role modeling. The results of this study disclose that the spheres of action research areas directly affect role modeling Imagery, illustrated with "Howl's Moving Castle". There are some special characteristics: 1. If the spheres of action is for the hero or the more complex spheres for action roles, the reproduction will fully adopt the original shape of fiction imagery. 2. If the spheres of action are for minor roles (as the wicked), the reproduction will follow the principle of major representation and do minor adaptations; 3. If the spheres of action are for roles can't be classified as either a field of action roles, the reproduction can be more substantially adapted. Lastly, the researcher hopes the results of this study can provide applications to relevant novel adapted animation, and even extends to provide as a reference to the live-action films adapted from the novels

The film, “Fight Club”, mainly depicts inner sense of poverty and humanity anxiety the middle-class youth faced at the end of century, which is proclaimed to be a typical work with significance of the time. The director challenged the most common material civilization and views of consumerism in a modern city radically by using a variety of metaphors, irony narrative technique skillfully. In the Study herein, theories as to semiology and narrative approach as well as photographing skills for a film were intended to use for discussion and demonstration of a number of video marks interwoven in the film, along with textual analysis to have in-depth interpretations of concept, ideology disclosed in the image and reflection of any relation with the society; such approach was divided into two dimensions including image analysis and story analysis specifically where a consolidated study combining versified dimensions is expected to have a complete inductive analysis of a variety of image symbols in the film, “Fight Club”, catching the whole picture of the Director’s camera work and narrative technique and interpreting cultural implications in the texts. However, with the limits set in the words of the thesis, such analysis or interpretation of film-type text in dynamic form needs to subtract some images in some paragraphs for image cases in the supporting discussions for avoidance of omission due to personal ideology; hence, the Study herein used focus group interview type of sampling manner to seek other experts opinions from background of field as to propagation or design and joint discussion for view exchange and selection of video screenshots representing each segment in the film. Indicated form the findings, the Director, with plasticity in a carrier such as film, characterized a time everything appeared so nice while also disclosing the dark side; capitalists, with occupying a majority of social resource, are the main causes of difficulty in the flow of ranks and disparity between poor and rich; a diversity of commercial marketing means allure public’s consumption beyond affordable range that people returned what they earned by working hard back to the rich people unconsciously to meet with the standard set by such capitalists; people at that time were only in a covet pursuit of superficial vanity under the negligence of social issues concerned with themselves. And Taylor represented a reaction against such ridiculous moral that a number of acts appearing to be rebellion are a planned implementation of subverting an ideal of old system instead of a disorder of pointless; with bare-hand competition to return human beings’ primitive instincts, people who feel more and more lost in the society can confirm and sense where they are; however, the blindness in the worship of a leader gets organization going toward Fascism that members who had loss of ability to judge what they did became the followers. The Director exaggerated with a display of a weird “space monkey” in the film to remind the audience of keeping independence in what they should think from time to time. Even though the modern society built in capitalism is not perfect, abandonment of all old things without building an updated and better system, on the contrary, would lead to a counterproductive situation and chaotic world that it is not what people are happy to see absolutely.

The researchers found that many scholars have recently reflected on VR virtual re-ality. The large perspective of virtual reality does allow users to immerse themselves in video content. For users, large viewing angles and immersive experiences bring visual surprise. Howev-er, the key to immersion is directly proportional to the viewing mode, and the degree of immersion in viewing a large viewing angle must exceed that of ordinary mobile devices. This study proposes two viewing modes, using the game experience immersion scale to measure the user's immersion experience. This study uses the 360-degree film produced by 2018 Google Spotlight Stories - Back to the Moon to design two viewing modes to measure the user's immersion experience. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of VR 360-degree and ordinary films on users with varying degrees of immersion experience. Different play modes are self-changing items. According to the immersive experience literature, immersive feeling exists and deeply feels the degree of participation in and with a imaginary world. In the game experience questionnaire, the core questionnaire mainly measures the user's immersion; As a corresponding experience of immersion, the social presence questionnaire proposed the core module and the social presence module as the dependent items of the study. Through the experiment and the questionnaire survey, the relationship between the variables was obtained to understand the Monitor and Cardboard. The pattern affects the degree of immersion experience experienced by participants. This study ex-perimented with the same video content in two ways, allowing users to experience the degree of immersion experience (GEQ) of the two viewing modes. The study found that under the same film, VR certainly gives users a large sense of visual immersion and the difference is quite large, but in understanding the content of the film does not produce significant results, the research shows that modern people have become accustomed to watching video content on mobile phones. Although VR virtual reality brings high visual sensibil-ity, it effectively allows users to understand how video content is produced - how to make users pay attention to the visual focus of the film on the main stage of the film will be an important goal for future VR virtual reality film.

In order to elevate their competitiveness of the latest 3C products, the manufacturers gradually replace the heavy connector between printed circuit boards by the anisotropic conductive film(ACF) medium for hot bonding lamination in order to reach the goal of developing lightweight electronics products. The ACF lamination process was more commonly used for signal transmission line design. This paper explored ways to apply ACF butt on the battery charging circuit, the applicability for a large current, life reliability, and found out the optimal parameters setting of the ACF lamination process. This paper used the Grey relation analysis and Taguchi method to investigate how major lamination parameters of the preload pressure, the bonging temperature, the bonding pressure, and the holding time influence the tensile strength and impact-resistance for SONY DP3342MS after cold lamination. Three standards of value were set for each parameter factors, with nine experiments being carried out, and the result was substituted into the grey correlation analysis, according to which the optimal setting of ACF lamination parameters was obtained to get the minimum resistance and sufficient tensile strength of the assembly. Finally, thermal cycling tests were repeated based on the reliability after the completion of laminated boards in connection with the optimal setting of ACF lamination parameters in order to ensure that the electrical circuits can be used for a long time. The result has been successfully applied to a series of cell phones of H company.

Intellectual property (IP) can be a story, an image, or a popular culture. Whatever earns support from fans, ranging from adapted films, television scripts, or even online computer games, can be regarded as IP. Novels or comics can spread through the Internet, and can then be vitalized by playwrights. As long as the work maintains popularity, it provides IP with infinite development spaces and opportunities. From a comprehensive perspective of the development of IP dramas in Taiwan over the years, the biggest dilemma is that the production model for the integration of IP content is yet to be sufficient, but the case subject "A Boy Named Flora A" discussed in this research is a fairly successful case of IP development recently. To better understand why "A Boy Named Flora A" is so successful, this study will conduct a questionnaire survey on the audience of " A Boy Named Flora A". It will discuss the audience's consumer perception, emotion, word-of-mouth sharing, purchase intention, and persistent intention, and further analyze the different degrees of infatuation on consumer perception. Through this study, we will explore what factors will affect the follow-up behavior of audience after watching movies and TV dramas, hoping to serve as a reference for the development of IP into movies and TV dramas and the cultivation of loyal fans. IBM SPSS Statistics 18 is utilized to conduct a questionnaire analysis in this study. A total of 412 questionnaires were collected, and regression analysis was used to study the correlation among consumer perception, emotion, word-of-mouth sharing, purchase intention, and persistence intention. The results showed that plot cognition and background cognition had a significant positive correlation with emotion, but plot cognition did not affect word-of-mouth sharing, not displaying remarkable correlation. While background cognition had a notable positive correlation with word-of-mouth sharing, emotion also had a positive influence on word-of-mouth sharing and persistent intention but had no apparent impact on purchase intention and shows no precise significance. Word-of-mouth sharing had a significant positive correlation with purchase intention but did not influence persistent intention, which is of little significance. Finally, purchase intention has a positive impact on persistent intention, thus having a significant correlation as well. As for the audience with a high degree of fascination with the play, the higher their adjustment of its plot cognition and word-of-mouth sharing is, the higher their loyalty and understanding of the play will be, and therefore they are more willing to make recommendations to others through word-of-mouth sharing.

The issues related to the body images and tragedies are always shown in Tsai Ming-Liang’s films, and the author’s perspective of creation is influenced by Tsai’s flims and Auteur theory. The cinema has the feature of depicting the reality through camera machines. However, in animation, a radical aesthetics which is different from cinema is developed through the frame editing. The body images are important characteristics in Tsai’s films. The thesis establishes Tsai’s body perspective through the analysis and discussion of literature and film context. In the creation of thesis, the author animates “The Cloud”and “Earthly Paradise” inspired by Tsai , and attempts to discover his own personal language from the discussion of Tsai’s body perspective. According to the discoursing on tragedy, body perspective and related context of artworks, the research discusses the desire body and space conversation in Tsai’s films with the concepts of Gilles Deleuze’s “Body without organ”, Walter Benjamin’s “Trauerspiel”and Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s “Phenomenology of Perception”. The thesis tries to develop Tsai’s body perspective through the animated creations “The Cloud” and “ Earthly Paradise” and explores the creative language and style of author. We can discover three elemental particularities-Labyrinth,Content and Sensory, from the research and discourses on the clips possessed these three elements in Tsai’s films. In the process of creation, the differences of fundamental specialties between animation and cinema are found. First, Tsai captures motive images through camara machines in cinema, but in animation which is captured through the author’s coporal eyes and hands. As for the Montage editing in the post production, experimental activities can be explored in cinema. However, it isn’t true in animation. Finally, the author attempts and moves toward to the characteristics of “Mimetic language” and “Poet” in the results and performances of creations which are rarely mentioned in Tsai’s films.

With the development of environmentally friendly energy, Taiwan is currently developing future energy technologies. One of them is thermoelectric materials. Thermoelectric materials have rich and interesting physical phenomena. Thermoelectric materials can directly convert temperature differences into electricity. Durable, simple, non-polluting, renewable, and widely used, it is a future energy source with unlimited potential. Thermoelectric materials are increasingly valued by semiconductor industry applications. In the past, due to the rapid development of the human economy and the lack of sustainable management concepts, the limited resources on the planet, especially the consumption of petrochemical energy, were exhausted. In order to reduce the use of petrochemical energy, replace it with a cleaner renewable energy source. However, the high cost of renewable energy, low efficiency, and solid use of renewable energy use efficiency, thermoelectric materials have become an important research topic. In this paper, we will discuss the fabrication of AgPb10SbTe12 thin films by RF magnetron sputtering to change the process conditions and different thermal annealing temperatures to improve the thermoelectric characteristics. The film was grown on a Si substrate, and the deposition time was changed at room temperature, the deposition time was changed, the sputtering power was changed to prepare a film, and the influence of the surface morphology and thermoelectric characteristics of the film was observed by a scanning electron microscope. It is known from the experimental results that the film deposited under different sputtering powers can be analyzed from X-ray diffraction; when the working pressure is 5.0×10-3 torr, the film thickness is 865 nm, and the sputtering power is 55 W and the time is 90 min. A lower resistivity of 4.9725 Ω-cm is obtained. Therefore, it is hoped that the best process conditions can be found by sputtering and the highest power factor is obtained.

Carignan, Jacob Marilyne. "Les timides et leur timidité : typologie des représentations subjectives dans quatre fils de discussion." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/25160.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the representations shy people have of their shyness in an English-speaking discussion forum. While social representations of shyness have transformed according to their sociohistorical and sociocultural context, contemporary Western values of sociability have set the conditions for shyness seen as a social and medical problem. As a result, this thesis aims to understand how shy subjects perceive the object of their shyness within four discussion threads, which each engage a specific way of considering shyness: “Self-identity”, “Introversion”, “Social skills”, “Social anxiety”. Mobilizing social representations, the “ideal type”, symbolic interactionism and identity, a hundred anonymous posts written in 2019 and 2020 were the subject of a thematic analysis with NVivo. From this analysis, I propose four “ideal types” according to the representations of shyness and the motivation for writing posts: the shyness acquired in the face of innate introversion (“Introvert”); shyness as experiential suffering with a look to the past (“social anxiety”); the quest for the secret of social interactions with a look at the present (“Social skills”); the optimistic process of self-transformation with a look to the future (“Self-identity”). These four “ideal types” share a representation of shyness as an individual problem for which therapy is an individual responsibility.
