Sotomayor, Hector. "He_rtland: The Violence of Neoliberalism." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6027.

Abstract:
Perhaps, under the consciousness of today, “neoliberalism” has defined our world during the previous and current centuries more than any other socioeconomic system. But the evolution of this ideology, which initially aimed to enhance, or rather, reinvent capitalism and individual freedom, has, in essence, induced an unrecognized problem. I argue that neoliberalism is the catalyst for much of the hostility in this globalized society where tensions and poverty are casualties of individual and corporate prosperity. Because of this revelation, I argue that neoliberalism inadvertently instills violence that is both unseen and gendered. In order to formulate my argument, I introduce a historical chronology to the ideological origins of neoliberalism and how it manifested its way to its socioeconomic prominence. I then concentrate my attention to neoconservatism, most notably, Reaganism, with the year 1984, which I feel is the official christening of neoliberalism. From that year, I bring forth, three films about the crisis of farming in the 20th century, Country, Places in the Heart, and The River. Through these “farm crisis films,”which centers their themes around pastoral virtues, I argue that the violence conveyed in these films critiques neoliberalism. On the surface, these films demonstrate violence through an invisible and unrecognizable antagonist. But at the heart of this violence is a gendered angle that has much more to do with neoliberalism than with feminist debates. The gendered violence of neoliberalism is, in actuality, linked to the characters’ struggle to maintain some sense of autonomy, but this possibility is always uncertain because of their failure to recognize their inevitable interdependencies.

Abstract:
This master's thesis is an investigation into Xavier Dolan's depictions of queer and non-normative characters. Through close analyses of the director's first five films, this study identifies Dolan's recurring stylistics and narrative techniques, and how they relate to his cinematic representation of individuals who do not conform to society's norms. The question of how queer subjectivity is presented to the spectator of the films guides the study, which outlines different kinds of subjective images and ways of expressing the inner worlds of the protagonists. As one of the first extensive academic studies of Dolan in English, the thesis carries out a dialogue with the few existing scholarly sources on the filmmaker, while also employing theories put forward by Deleuze, Pasolini, Bonitzer and Foucault, among others. Whereas previous writings on Dolan have focused almost entirely on national aspects of his work – interpreting the films as typically Québécois – this study considers the filmmaker from an international perspective. Although being an auteur study, the thesis highlights current issues of queer self-representation and the voices of the marginalized, proposing that Dolan's work offers non-normative alternatives to heteronormative narrative structures, patriarchal storytelling conventions and traditional family constellations.

Ait, Sidhoum Amer. "Sustainability and firm performance : evidence from corportate and farm level." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/664276.

Abstract:
This thesis approaches the question of sustainability and firm performance. In the contemporary business model, firm performance measurement must take into account not only economic profits, but also environmental and social issues, in order to ensure the sustainable development of the firm. By using advanced methodological approaches and exploring sustainability through a holistic view, this thesis contributes significantly to sustainability performance literature. Three specific objectives have been fulfilled through three papers that constitute the main body of the present thesis. The first article aims to answer whether profitable business is compatible with balanced sustainability by investigating the relationship between the economic, social, environmental and governance performance for a sample of global firms. A canonical vine (C-vine) copula is used for this purpose. Results show the existence of a fairly strong positive relationship between economic, social and environmental performance. The corporate governance dimension is shown to have a weak relationship with the rest of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) dimensions. Important policy implications are derived from these results. The second paper investigates the relationships among performance dimensions associated with corporate social responsibility focusing on the U.S. electric utility sector. Results of a statistical copula approach suggest that economic performance of utilities is compatible with environmental, social, and governance performance. The CSR model has the potential to help U.S. electric utilities become better corporate citizens while also obtaining higher economic profits. The third paper investigates farms’ stochastic production technology as the interaction of three-main types of sub-technologies that govern, respectively, the production of agricultural commodities, environmental pollution, and social outputs of agricultural activities. The model is empirically implemented through a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model. The empirical application is based on a survey of Catalan arable crop farms. On average, we find our sample farms to display high technical and social performance, while they show relatively poor environmental performance.

Abstract:
In order to identify the factors that describe a successful rural entrepreneur, three focus groups were conduced with farmers and extension agents of the Wheat Cooperative of Alto Jacui – Cotrijal at Não-Me-Toque, Rio Grande do Sul State. Several variables were suggested as playing important roles in explaining why a farmer is considered successful or not, besides their ability to produce profits. Among these variables are: (1) the farmer competence as shown by his technological knowledge, his ability to implement production and trading processes, and by his attitudes in conformity with the values of the Cotrijal’s social group; (2) farmer’s constant search for new technical and economical informations; (3) farmer attendance of courses and events that will enhance its technical qualifications; (4) farmers willingness and ability to promote partnerships, associations and group production; (5) farmers ability to diversify their activities as strategies to reduce risks; (6) farmers willingness to adopt knew ideas, technologies or production systems; (7) farmers ability to organize production and their farms; (8) the existence of a system of expenditure and receipt control; (9) how they plan production and other farm activities; (10) farmers that have freedom to travel and to set their own time to work; (11) farmers that have their families involved with the farm business; (12) their ability to provide for children formal education and to give their family higher levels of consumption; (13) farmers involvement with the community subjects; and finally, (14) farmers that are seen as persons that preserves the environment and as model for other farms. A questionnaire with 37 statements were applied to 140 farmers of Cotrijal. The statements were based on the focus group suggested characteristics and organized according to the four management functions (planning, organizing, direction, and control), on two strategic levels (strategic and operational) and on the four firm’s working areas (finance, production, commercialization, and human resource). The huge amount of data were condensed by defining eight factors (from multivariate factor analysis) that comprised 62.3% of the sample total variance: (1) financial, (2) commercial planning, (3) communication and information, (4) personal planning, (5) human resource management, (6) production organization, (7) dealing with new opportunities, and (8) previous commercial experience. Three linear regression equations were estimated with attributed grades for farmers' entrepreneurship ability as the dependent variables. Grades were attributed by the farmers (themselves), by other interviewed farmers, and by the extension agents of Cotrijal. Equations show that four factor were statistically significant in explaining the grades: financial, communication and information, personal planning, and dealing with new opportunities. Other three general variables also were statistically significant in explaining the grades: personal satisfaction, product quality, and physical and financial control. Although the equations explained only a small part of the variations in the grade attributed to the farmers entrepreneurs ability (from 14 to 27% explanation measured by the adjusted R2 coefficient) they showed high significant levels as measured by the F statistic test.

The stationary states of driven diffusive single-file systems, connected to boundary reservoirs with fixed particle density are shown to be selected by an extremal principle for the macroscopic current. Given the current one obtains the exact first- and secondorder non-equilibrium phase transition lines for the bulk density as a function of the boundary densities. The basic dynamical mechanism behind the extremal principle is an intriguing generic interplay between the motion of shocks and localized perturbations. Abstract:
295 pages
My dissertation addresses two major issues in Chinese contemporary film and TV studies: the first is the proliferations of new forms of subjectivities and the state’s attempt to regulate them via the construction of an ideal citizenship on the film and TV screen; the second is to develop an approach to understand the political economy of screen culture (yingshi wenhua), as well as freedom and control in post-1989 China. My project investigates key contemporary state-sponsored (zhuxuanlü) and state-criticized/banned screen products as a way to explore socialist values advanced by the Chinese Communist Party, as well as the ways in which and the extent to which individuals are able to challenge them. The ways in which my project contributes to the fields of film and TV studies in China are fourfold. First, close readings of selected films and TV dramas inform us of three emergent forms of subjectivity that were previously theorized as a synthesized sublime subject. Second, I conceptualize qualities of the on-screen socialist spirit that the state uses to counteract the three new forms of subjectivity and maintain its superiority. Third, by discussing the state’s intervention and control on production and consumption of screen products, I reveal the state’s vested interests and individuals’ execution of agency in popular culture. This emphasis on state-individual interactions challenges the current focus on TV and film as merely a profit-oriented industry; it also unravels conflicted ideologies in screen products and questions the understanding of popular culture as mainstream culture. Fourth, by achieving the above tasks, my research exposes that the state’s tolerance of its citizens’ partial freedom is for the purpose of political stability.

Abstract:
While the influence of the film medium on modernist literature has been well established along with the increase of intermediality studies, and although the new generation of Swedish authors in the 1930s expressed fascination for the moving pictures, the interrelation between film and literature within the Swedish literary context has gained surprisingly little scholarly attention. On that account, this study sets out to explore the early 1930s prose works of Erik Asklund and Josef Kjellgren, in relation to a film movement particularly admired by them and their Swedish contemporaries – namely, the Soviet montage cinema. Using a broad semiotic and narratological discourse, as well as incorporating the theoretical writings of Soviet filmmakers Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov, the study examines thematic and formal traits within the novels from an intermedial perspective. The aim is to formulate to what extent, and by which media specific means, the authors allude to and ‘imitate’ the characteristics of said film movement. Central to this discussion is the concept of iconicity – a phenomenon that, when present in literature, may function to modify the conventional semiotic ‘modes’ of the printed literary text, consequently creating a production of meaning that resembles that of the film medium. The results show that the authors’ respective prose works indeed employ medial and artistic conventions of the Soviet montage cinema, yet with different techniques and outcomes. Whereas Asklund, by way of experimenting with the signifying practices accessible to the prose genre, can be said to bring about a ‘film-like’ perception, Kjellgren – while showing distinct similarities to the Soviet cinema on a thematic level – does not to the same degree alter the customary semiotic constituents of the literary text. On the whole, the study contributes to a new and nuanced perspective on Swedish modernist literature.

Abstract:
Thin film growth from the vapor phase has for a long time intrigued researchers endeavouring to unravel and understand atomistic surface processes that govern film formation. Their motivation has not been purely scientific, but also driven by numerous applications where this understanding is paramount to knowledge-based design of novel film materials with tailored properties. Within the above framework, this thesis investigates growth of metal films on weakly bonding substrates, a combination of great relevance for applications concerning e.g., catalysis, graphene metallization and architectural glazing. When metal vapor condenses on weakly bonding substrates three dimensional islands nucleate, grow and coalesce prior to forming a continuous film. The combined effect of these initial growth stages on film formation and morphology evolution is studied using pulsed vapor fluxes for the model system Ag/SiO2. It is shown that the competition between island growth and coalescence completion determines structure evolution. The effect of the initial growth stages on film formation is also examined for the tilted columnar microstructure obtained when vapor arrives at an angle that deviates from the substrate surface normal. This is done using two metals with distinctly different nucleation behaviour, and the findings suggest that the column tilt angle is set by nucleation conditions in conjunction with shadowing of the vapor flux by adjacent islands. Vapor arriving at an angle can in addition result in films that exhibit preferred crystallographic orientations, both out-of-plane and in-plane. Their emergence is commonly described by an evolutionary growth model, which for some materials predict a double in-plane alignment that has not been observed experimentally. Here, an experiment is designed to replicate the model’s growth conditions, confirming the existence of double in-plane alignment. New and added film functionalities can further be unlocked by alloying. Properties are then largely set by chemistry and atomic arrangement, where the latter can be affected by thermodynamics, kinetics and vapor flux modulation. Their combined effect on atomic arrangement is here unravelled by presenting a research methodology that encompasses high resolution vapor flux modulation, nanoscale structure v vi probes and growth simulations. The methodology is deployed to study the immiscible Ag-Cu and miscible Ag-Au model systems, for which it is shown that capping of Cu by Ag atoms via near surface diffusion processes and rough morphology of the Ag-Au growth front are the decisive structure forming processes in each respective system. The results generated in this thesis are of relevance for tuning structure of metal films grown on weakly bonding substrates. They also indicate that improved growth models are required to accurately describe structure evolution and emergence of a preferred in-plane orientation in films where vapor arrives at an angle that deviates from the substrate surface normal. In addition, this thesis presents a methodology that can be used to identify and understand structure forming processes in multicomponent films, which may enable tailoring of atomic arrangement and related properties in technologically relevant material systems.

Kornelsen, Kevin E. "Far-infrared reflectivity measurements including thin films of ice and a mosaic of TTF-TCNQ crystals." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25905.

Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis project involved the design and construction of a reflectance module to be used with a far infrared Fourier spectrometer. This module would be used for specular reflectivity measurements with small samples at temperatures between liquid helium and room temperature. Early tests of this reflectance module were used to investigate some of the interesting changes in the far infrared spectrum which result from ice condensation on the sample surface. With the condensing substrate at temperatures between 130 and 200K the condensation is in a crystalline phase and can drastically reduce the intensity of the reflected radiation. The effects are most significant in the spectral range between 150 and 300cm⁻¹. Substrate temperatures lower than 130K lead to condensation of ice in a vitreous phase which does not have such a large effect on the far infrared spectrum. Modifications were made to the reflectance module design to eliminate the unpredictable effects of ice condensation and a final set of tests were performed measuring the reflectance of a mosaic of TTF-TCNQ crystals. The resulting data shows much of the fine structure which has been observed in other measurements using bolometric techniques.

Abstract:
We have investigated several properties of semiconductor electronic nanostructures. In the first part of the thesis, within the density functional theory we have addressed the ground state and the dipolar response of quantum rings. In particular, we have considered single-quantum-ring systems and also vertically and concentrically coupled quantum rings. As parameters, we have taken both the inter-ring distance and the intensity of externally applied electric and/or magnetic fields. The calculation of the addition energies and the dipolar response has allowed us to study the evolution of these properties as a function of the mentioned parameters, and to describe as well some of the properties of double-ring systems in terms of those of the single rings, especially in the limits of small (strong coupling regime) and large (weak coupling regime) ring separations.

Also, we have studied the effects of the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions in quantum wells and wires submitted to magnetic fields. For the formers, we have not taken into account the electron-electron interaction in most of the calculations and we have employed an analytic formalism that has allowed us to obtain exact results for the electronic eigenstates and eigenenergies in some particular cases, as well as non-exact expressions obtained after doing some approximations that have turned out to be very accurate when compared with the numerically obtained results. For the quantum wires, we have employed a generalization of the local spindensity approximation that allows to treat systems with non-collinear spins (e.g. due to the spinorbit interaction) similarly as those systems in which one can define a common spin quantization axis. This way we have been able to compute the single-particle orbitals and also the conductance of the wire as a funcion of both the magnetic field and the spin-orbit coupling strengths, investigating the effects of the exchange-correlation interaction.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the representations of indigenous peoples of the North in Soviet fiction films and made for TV movies. Mobilizing several approaches — film analysis, the cultural history of cinema, the history of representations and Soviet political history — it confronts films with non-film sources (press, paper archives, interviews) in order to highlight the construction of a subjective point of view. It also studies the production of these representations, in both its most concrete and symbolic dimensions. The issue of the participation or non-participation of indigenous peoples in the creation of their image on film, whether in front of or behind the camera, is another central question. The filmic representations of the peoples of the North, constantly torn between visions of “progress” and “authenticity,” operate on the screen as images that allowed the Soviet Union to evaluate its own perception of modernity. From the 1920s to the 1980s, images of indigenous people shifted along a spectrum ranging from the incarnation of backwardness to be eliminated in the name of Sovietization to the embodiment of harmony with nature, now lost or threatened. Moreover, taking into account the question of the contribution of the indigenous people to the creation of their own image, this thesis demonstrates that cinema became a complex space, where different readings and uses were possible according to the position of the participants

BEDNASEK, DREW. "Aboriginal and Colonial Geographies of the File Hills Farm Colony." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/5303.

Full text
Abstract:
Canadian government archives have primarily shaped scholars’ analysis of the File Hills farm colony on the Peepeekisis Reserve in south eastern Saskatchewan. While these colonial archives are valuable for research, they emphasise particular points in the government’s telling of the colony story. They focus on the construction, management, and intentions of the colony, but neglect the experiences and perspectives of Peepeekisis community members affected by the colony scheme. My thesis makes use of government archives, and is also based on Aboriginal oral histories about the colony and its long-term consequences. My central argument is that a more critical interpretation of archives and oral histories will enrich the historical and geographical record about the colony. I demonstrate how oral histories and archive documents can converge and diverge, but combining the two is particularly important to nuance the colony narrative. A critical viewing of texts and oral histories from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries also reveals that colonialism in the prairie west was highly spatalised and grounded in “betterment” sciences that sought to control and discipline Aboriginal peoples through the manipulation of space, heredity, and environments. Betterment sciences shaped Indian Affairs policy and the farm colony is a remarkable example of how betterment was applied on the ground. Finally, oral histories offer powerful insight into Aboriginal identities that survive in spite of colonial constructs and strategies. Oral histories of Peepeekisis community members are particularly important for highlighting peoples’ everyday geographies and lives only hinted at in colonial archive documents. Part of what makes this thesis original is that it is based on collaborative research. I sought Peepeekisis band permission to conduct this project, and Peepeekisis community members’ oral histories form an important part of this thesis and they have provided guidance on the documenting of their oral histories in this thesis.

An investigation into the feasibility of measuring wake velocity profiles in a towing tank using hot film probes has been conducted. Results show that such a system is feasible, but care must be taken to minimize calibration errors due to the small velocity differences being measured. Included are calibration data and plots of wake profiles behind a sphere measured at the U.S. Naval Academy's Hydromechanics Laboratory and the MIT Ship Model Towing Tank. These plots show the effect of the presence of a free surface on the development of turbulent wake. Data collected using the hot film system can be used as an input to analytic wake algorithms, compared to wake prediction or visualization techniques

Film creation is a way to connect with other people. The director of this short film “Far From Home” chooses to display some personal feelings on the screen to release the director’s internal emotions, as well as to connect to the audiences. The story of “Far From Home” is based on the director’s individual emotions and growth background. Director’s father is a first-generation mainlander who immigrated with National Government into Taiwan in 1949. This film describes how the leading roles built their relationships and accumulated emotions in their lives. The generation difference is a reason why there are lots of dissimilar values and world views between family members which often lead to communication problems. Bad communication and misunderstanding can cause conflicts. But behind the conflicts, there still are deep love and concerns between family members. This compositional report shows the concept and the production of this short film. Chapter one is about the motive of the creation, which is from the director’s own emotions and background. The purpose of this film is to show the love with family and the feelings of second-generation mainlanders, and try to make a bridge between different ethnic groups in Taiwan. Chapter two is the literature review. It is a research of related topics about autobiographical films and writers of second-mainlanders. Chapter three is the concept of creation. It shows the concept of the script and general idea of visual style. Chapter four is about the production. It describes the process of production and shows the problems during production and how these problems were solved. Chapter five is the records of the public play and Q&A with audiences. It also tells the conclusion of this production. The director made a deep heart-searching through making this film. Keeping an objective attitude to deal with subjective emotions is the key point of making an autobiographical film.

The research attempts to explore how the patients with leukaemia adjust their emotions and their loss of father in the infancy, and to interpret the meaning of life. As the cancer patients were aware of the fatal disease, their family and friends could hardly accept the fatal fact. They either lose their emotions to cry or repress their sadness; they suffered even more, especially when coming to the end of the life. Their family and friends, with their awareness or not, would, at the instant moment, choose to repress the shock and pain at the time in order not to affect the patient’s emotions. But both parties—the patients and their family and friends—have to lead their life without being understood; all they could do is wait for the disappearance of the sense of loss. But would the patients’ friends and family feel sorry for them as they pass away? Or any other emotions? The Fireflies Most Far Away is a film intertwined between life and emotions that accounts for a patient with leukaemia. In particular, the author interprets the protagonist’s process to fight the cancer by the metaphor of the firefly with the patient. Also, the author seeks to explore the opening between life and emotions by making the spectators fall in the sad complex through this film.

Abstract:
This study seeks to identify the main determinants of the size of the farm firms in Portugal and more specifically in the region of Algarve, between 2002 and 2007. After reviewing the relevant literature to identify the determinants of firm size, were presented and discussed determinants associated with firm, workers and employers. The empirical analysis resulted from the application of an econometric model explained during the study. First it’s analyzed the sector at national level, where there was a need to replicate the models but with a different offset, in order to strengthen or refute previously analyzes taken, only then proceed to the analysis of farm firms in the Algarve region, allowing us to have a starting point for firm, as well as to understand if there are differences between the determination of the firm size in this region and Portugal. In the end, is concluded that workers still being the best and main determinant to explain and determine the firm size. Although, determinants like age and legal form of the firm explain the firm size, but it’s the determinants associated to workers and employers, such as age, experience, qualifications and skills, which have the greatest impact on the explanation and sizing. Moreover, it appears that there are few differences between the average size of farms in Portugal and the average size of farms in the region of Algarve.

Reynolds, John Stuart. "Going far?: John O’Shea’s Runaway in the context of his attempt to establish a feature film industry in New Zealand." 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/334.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past two decades, the amount of media attention and scholarly research focused on New Zealand feature-films has greatly increased. However, because this work has emphasised directors and films from 1977 onwards, John O’Shea (1920- 2001) has not received the detailed treatment called for in terms of the crucial role he played in sustaining and building film production in New Zealand through his company Pacific Films. This thesis seeks to make a comprehensive study of one of O’Shea’s most important feature films, Runaway (1964). The film provides a classic example of the importance of contexts in film study, and this thesis seeks to explore a variety of relevant contexts – the previous history of film production in New Zealand; the development of a general ‘film culture’; O’Shea’s personal background; the events leading up to the Runaway’s production; the social, cultural, technical and financial challenges O’Shea faced in completing the film; and its reception and subsequent influence. His earlier and later feature films are also discussed in some detail. The limited amount of previous scholarship on this topic necessitated primary research of various kinds, beginning with a study of the extensive records of Pacific Films – scripts, correspondence, music scores, flyers, press clippings, etc. Interviews were conducted with O’Shea over a six-year period. In addition, interviews were held with various people involved in the production of Runaway, as well as a number of writers. These included Colin Broadley, Betty Curnow, John Graham, Kevin Ireland, William Johnstone and Ian Mune. Runaway makes an interesting case study for many reasons – its novelty as the first 35mm feature made in New Zealand for 12 years; O’Shea’s struggle to create the necessary creative and technical infrastructure; the influence of contemporary European cinema; the film’s portrayal of an ‘Angry Young Man’ combined with the New Zealand ‘Man Alone’ tradition; and its creative achievement in a situation when there were so few precedents or possible ways of funding film-making. This thesis seeks to expand the record of an under-researched period of our film history, to provide insights into the dynamics of New Zealand culture at the time, and to analyse O’Shea’s remarkable contribution to the development of a local film industry.

In this thesis, we measure the far-field second harmonic generation (SHG) in various-oriented BiFeO3 thin films by femtosecond laser pulses with 800 nm. From the symmetry of SHG pattern, we could analyze the relationship between the SHG and the polarization in BiFeO3. Moreover, the SHG in the BiFeO3-CoFe2O4 nanostructure samples can be measured by a home-made Scanning Near-field Optic Microscopy (SNOM). By comparing the results of SNOM and PFM, the mechanism of SHG in BiFeO3 thin films could be further revealed. Finally, the time-resolved SNOM has been performed here to study the ferroelectric domain in BiFeO3 thin films.

In this dissertation, we reported the investigation of two novel photodetectors, i.e., far infrared InP / InGaAs / InP PIN and ultraviolet SiCN / Si MSM photodetectors, respectively. Additionally, growing single and poly crystalline GaN films on Si-substrate were described in detail. Firstly, we reported the preparation and characterization of a high performance, front-illuminated PIN photodiode through the pre-bake process. The developed photodiode possesses a very low dark current of 0.041nA, a very low capacitance of 0.47 pF, a very high responsivity of 0.99A/W (79% quantum efficiency) at λ= 1.55 μm, and the 3dB bandwidth of 4.48 GHz at -5V for the device packaged in TO can, respectively. On the other hand, we also presented the investigation of tuning Zn diffusion time to attain a lowest capacitance of 0.43 pF, a lowest dark current of 39 pA and the highest responsivity of 0.99 A/W (79% quantum efficiency atλ= 1.55 μm) for a large area (73 μm in diameter) InGaAs PIN diode for easier coupling with a fiber. Then, we described the SiCN films grown on silicon substrate by rapid-thermal chemical vapor deposition (RTCVD) for the fabrication of an ultraviolet SiCN / Si MSM (metal-semiconductor-metal) photodetector. The MSM SiCN/Si photodetector is very sensitive for 254nm UV light, so that it is suitable for deep-UV light, detecting applications and there must be very good development in the future. Additionally, the photo/dark current ratios (PDCR) of SiCN photodetector are about 6.5 at 25°C and 2.3 at 200°C, respectively. Finally, the growth of poly-crystalline GaN on Si (100) and single-crystalline h-GaN on Si (111) substrates with single-crystalline SiCN buffer layer by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) were depicted. The single-crystalline SiCN on Si (111) substrate possesses 9.4 times in smooth and 11.3 times in grain size smaller than SiCN on Si (100) substrate, which result in GaN on SiCN / Si (100) is poly-crystalline but single-crystalline on SiCN / Si (111).

Abstract:
This study examines the factors that contributed to the failure of retrenched Telkom workers to start and run successful businesses after the company had provided them with start-up capital and also funds for training. Many of the factors contributing to the majority of Telkom retrenched employees not establishing businesses will be identified and recommendations that companies could implement in the future to limit the failure of businesses of retrenched employees will be made. The study was descriptive, exploratory and qualitative in nature. Semi-structured interviews and a survey questionnaire specifically developed for this study were used to gather data. The study was conducted on ex-employees of Telkom residing in and around the townships and suburbs situated on the western side of Johannesburg (Mogale City, Randfontein and Soweto). Telkom provided retrenched employees with funds to attend external training so that they could be equipped to start and run their own businesses. Subsequently, Telkom also provided start-up capital so that these employees could start small businesses after they had left the company. Although the funds were provided, most employees did not utilise them to start their businesses and the few that did access the funds and start businesses experienced the failure of their businesses within a very short period of time. Three major issues of concern were identified: many of these ex-employees did not utilise the funds that were allocated for training; many did not make use of the start-up capital and the majority did not start businesses. The study investigated the following issues: a) Why the retrenched employees did not make use of the funds allocated for training b) Why the ex-employees did not make use of the start-up capital c) Why the ex-employees did not start businesses d) Of those that did start businesses, why did they fail within such a short period of time? The findings of the study confirm that most of the retrenched employees did not access either the training or the start-up funds. Detailed reasons for why the funds were not made use of are given and recommendations are also made for what the company should do in future if deciding to embark on a similar exercise.
