Full textThis work presents an experimental study of the structure of thin smectic films frustrated on a single crystal. Film thicknesses are investigated from several hundreds to several tens of smectic layers. We worked on the model system 8CB/MoS2 by combining four different experimental techniques, llowing an exploration of the layers structure everywhere in the film. We demonstrate we are able to study sual defects of the smectic phase in a simplified geometry because of the order imposed via the substrate's surface. Combination of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Grazing Incidence X-ray effraction (GIXD) permit to take interest to the physisorption of organic molecules on a crystalline surface and more precisely to determine the fine structure of the first 8CB adsorbed molecules on MoS2 surface. We interpret our results through a1D mean field model leading to a complex molecule-substrate. In a second time, by combining Optical Microscopy (MO) and GIXD we studied the unidirectionnal planar anchoring of the smectic A and nematic phases imposed by the flat surface of MoS2. We have determined six different anchoring directions for the perpendicularly anchored smectic layers with respect to the main crystallographic directions of MoS2. With models existing in the litterature, we have then interpreted our results and evidenced the strong link between the adsorbed structure and the anchoring characteristics. Film's structure frustrated by antagonistic anchorings was investigated by combination of MO, GIXD and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in the Tapping mode. For thickness higher than 0,1 mm, smectic layers are stacked concentrically into periodic networks formed by flattened hemicylindrical structures. We have evidenced the existence of an elastic threshold located between 700 and 900 Å, below which a discontinous structure with dislocation walls exists in order to avoid any prohibitive curvature of smectic layers. We have demonstrated the asymmetric nature of the walls associated to a high dislocation density. Thickness evolution has revealed also the presence of such a discontinous structure under the flattened Hemicylindrical structures and permit to understand the defect evolution when film's thickness varies. We have then studied straightforward the internal structure of focal conics, which here are 1D degenerated

Full textIn the framework of this PhD thesis, the characterisation of the thick and thin films deposited on asubstrate has been done using acoustic microscopy via direct and inverse problem-solving algorithms.Namely the Strohm’s method is used for direct problem-solving while a variety of mathematical modelsincluding Debye series model (DSM), transmission line model (TLM) and spectral method using ratiobetween multiple reflections model (MRM) have been used to solve inverse-problem. A specificapplication of acoustic microscopy has been used consisting of mounting the plane-wave high frequency(50 MHz and 200MHz) transducers instead of use of the traditional focus transducers used for acousticimaging as well as using full-wave A-scan which could be well extended to bulk analysis of consecutivescans. Models have been validated experimentally by a thick film made of epoxy-resin with thicknessof about 100μm and a thin film made of polish of about 8μm. The characterised parameters includemechanical parameters (e.g. density and thickness) as well as viscoelastic parameters (e.g. acousticlongitudinal velocity and acoustic attenuation) and occasionally transducer phase-shift

Full textThe mechanical behavior of a 15 µm-thick chromium coating, deposited on a zirconium alloy substrate by a particular physical vapour deposition process, is studied at Room Temperature (RT) using several experimental techniques at several scales: "biaxial" tests consisting in applying simultaneously an internal pressure and an axial loading on Zr-based alloy tubes coatedwith Cr, in situ tensile tests in SEMon sheet samples coated with Cr. The cracking and plasticity of the coating are studied using two main techniques: acoustic emission and digital image correlation. The results show that, at RT, the first channeling cracks in the coating initiate at 0.3-0.4% macroscopic strain, when the substrate starts to yield. During further loading, the crack density increases first rapidly then more slowly, before reaching saturation. Plastic strain of the non-cracked coating regions is observed, in addition to the increase of crack opening. Until at least 5% applied strain, no interface decohesion of the coating is observed and the cracks, both transgranular and intergranular, do not penetrate significantly into the substrate. Numerical simulations using a FFT-based method (AMITEX_FFTP solver) are performed to calculate the critical energy release rate of the coating. It is shown that the kinetics of the coating cracking is strongly influenced by plastic strain of the substrate. The cracking saturation is due to plastic strain localization in the substrate under the cracks in the coating. The methodology developed here could be applied to study the behavior of the coating when the cladding is irradiated or loaded at higher temperatures, especially at the cladding in-service temperature (~350°C)

Full textSemiconductor coatings deposited on flexible substrates are used in various high-tech applications, for example flexible micro-electronic components or flexible sollar cells. When submitted to large tensile strains, these coatings undergo damage characterized by the appearance of multiple cracks on their surface with or without delamination at the film/substrate interface. At the end of the multi-cracking process, a characteristic distance between cracks can be measured. This distance depends mainly on the thickness of the film and the mechanical behavior of the substrate. In this project, an experimental study on oxide layers and oxide and silver multilayers of different thicknesses deposited on two polymer substrates was carried out. Were able to determine the mechanical behavior of each substrate and to identify the stages of the three stades of multi-cracking of thin layers.A first stade of random appearance of cracks, a second stade of regular cracking and a last stade of saturation of the network of cracks were identified. The influence of the thickness of the silver layer has also been studied. We have developed a 2D based mechanical model using cohesive zones to simulate the initiation and propagation of cracks in the film.Using this model, we successfully simulate the three stages of the multi-cracking of oxide monolayers deposited on polymer as observed experimentally. We then reduced the model to a representative cell allowing only the last two stages of multi-cracking to be modeled. This cell allowed us to identify the influence of the geometric and mechanical properties of the thin layers and their substrate on the distance between cracks to saturation. The influence of interfacial delamination has also been studied
