Abstract:
In this paper, we will discuss the worship of fertility goddesses around the world and how these practices inform female figures as they appear in Western art. Aphrodite, or Venus, is a key figure in our discussion. In this study, we will focus on her origin, figures, and characteristics. We will also investigate female images from the later time when Europe became a fully patriarchal society. These images evidenced a shift from a muscular and curvaceous body to a soft and submissive-looking one. Once the feminist movement was underway, images from the ancient Greek and Roman period were revived and reemerged in new ways. In this paper, we’ll use Rosie the Riveter as a modern example for study. As the message and intent of artists throughout history makes clear: the ancient goddess’s expression of “Heroic Femininity” is still full of life in today’s context. Venus, the goddess of love, sex, justice, and fertility, created with a body to be desired by man, has become, in a new world setting – a beacon for women’s equal rights and freedom.

Representations of Mexican revolutionary hero, Emiliano Zapata, migrate across the Mexico/US borders. His specters inform and reflect sexual identities migrating across these borderlands. Theoretically guided by Madison's model of performative writing and Muñoz's disidentification, this experimental project highlights and challenges the heteronormativity that pervades these migratory representations and the discursive practices that bring them to life. Through a performative writing exercise, I travel through theory and time to (re)present the figure of Zapata in an intimate love story whose backdrop is violence and war.

Full text
Abstract:
This article close-reads Modernist architect Ludwig Hilberseimer’s early architectural projects, which employed a language of uniform fenestration, repetition and geometrically reduced typical forms, as embodying Georg Simmel’s blasé attitude in analogical form, and places this reading in relation to Aldo Rossi’s concept of the analogical city and the political theorist Paolo Virno’s notion of the multitude. The first part outlines the discourse around Simmel, Hilberseimer and Rossi to note salient connections between these figures, their thought and the process of modernization. The second part discusses Simmel’s and Hilberseimer’s readings of the metropolis and interprets Hilberseimer’s formal language as embodying the blasé attitude. The third part places Hilberseimer in dialogue with Rossi and interprets Rossi’s analogical city as inhabited by another of Simmel’s figures, the stranger. The article concludes by tracing a line from Simmel’s figures of the blasé and the stranger via Hilberseimer’s metropolis architecture and Rossi’s analogical city toward the contemporary multitude, a collective linguistic subject. In doing so Hilberseimer’s and Rossi’s grammar of the metropolis can be rethought in relation to contemporary subject positions as a critical project toward an architectural theory of the multitude pushing back against the increasingly individualised city and market urbanism prevalent today.

Abstract:
In an article recently published in this journal, I argued that a certain, often discussed, hybrid encountered in Bronzino's wellknown painting depicting The Exposure of Luxury (ca. 1545, National Gallery, London; also known as Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time) was actually intended to represent a “sphinx” [fig. 1]. Whatever its proper designation, this is the bizarre figure that may be espied lurking in darkness (as much metaphorical as physical), just as she/it was placed in the middle ground of the far right side of Bronzino's carefully contrived composition [fig. 2]. This darkly crouching creature was situated by the ingenious painter behind the brightly illuminated figure of a nude and joyful putto tossing roses, so making it literally hidden (occulta).

Abstract:
The cover of the may 29, 1943, Saturday Evening Post depicts our most famous image of Rosie the Riveter, a name that came to symbolize women's crossover into male-dominated industrial work during World War II (Figure 1). Norman Rockwell positioned his Rosie resting during her lunch break, calmly eating a bologna sandwich while stomping on a copy of Mein Kampf with author's name, Adolf Hitler, and Nazi swastika visible under the title. It was an image meant to reassure the American public that women would get the job done on America's home front and help defeat the Axis powers. It is also an image worth examining today for it captures some of the contradictions that continue to vex us concerning the war's multifaceted representations of women and work, portrayals that contained and excluded even as they widened public perceptions of what women could do. For one thing, Rockwell's Rosie is notably “unfeminine” in that her muscular arms are unadorned with jewelry, she wears a double-banded leather watch, she has on comfortable loafers to match her denim overalls, and her ruddy complexion seems the product of exertion, not makeup. Furthermore, she is indifferent to our gaze; rather her proud stare announces absorption in a more compelling subject, symbolized by the American flag that forms the backdrop for her portrait.

Abstract:
Abstract Cristina Peri Rossi (1941) let herself be influenced by fellow Uruguayan Felisberto Hernández (1902-64), evoking him often in works of fiction and non-fiction in the 1980s. In a variation of Harold Bloom’s notions on the anxiety of influence, Peri Rossi is more devious than innocent in her uses of Felisberto as a literary precursor. On the one hand, her rendering of Felisberto as too innocent to engage in political activism allows her to appear politically committed without being strident; on the other, Peri Rossi can invoke Felisberto to keep the influence of her stronger literary friend Julio Cortázar (1914-84) at bay. The awkward tenderness between hapless father and practical daughter in her 1975 story "La influencia de Edgar A. Poe en la poesía de Raimundo Arias" epitomizes her complicated relationship to a writer whose work she promoted, even if not always faithfully. This relationship can then be traced through Peri Rossi’s El libro de mis primos, La nave de los locos, Fantasías eróticas, and "Fetichistas S.A.". As she examines the position of weak masculinity and strong perverse desire in her own works, Peri Rossi’s championing of Felisberto minimizes and miniaturizes him, turning him into a figure of pre-modern nostalgia for a naive Uruguay she left behind for Europe and ignoring his own ideas about the economic basis and social effects of fetishistic desire.

Abstract:
Among terminally ill figures of speech, the cliché of rosy cheeks, ruby lips, and snow-white skin may be counted downright deceased. Even in medieval and Renaissance love poetry, roses in the cheeks, lips like cherries or rubies, skin like ivory, lilies, or snow were stiffly conventional: freshness of complexion prompted no freshness of metaphor. The mistress's red-and-white face was relentlessly emblazoned, “red and white” becoming a short-hand notation for feminine beauty: “With lilies white / And roses bright / Doth strive thy colour fair” (Wyatt 65); “Fair is my love … / A lily pale, with damask dye to grace her” (Passionate Pilgrim no. 7); “Thou art not fair for all thy red and white” (Campion 264). The mistress in Spenser's Amoretti has “ruddy cheekes” and “snowy browes” (no. 64); the bride in his Epithalamion is a vision in red and white—cheeks like sun-reddened apples, lips like cherries, forehead like ivory, “breast like to a bowle of creame uncrudded, / Her paps lyke lyllies budded, / Her snowie necke”; when she blushes, “the red roses flush up in her cheekes, / and the pure snow with goodly vermill [vermillion] stayne, / Like crimsin dyde” (Il. 172-7, 226-8).

Abstract:
The article presents how Algerians’ national awareness was born. At that time, the country was still a French colony (a department belonging to a metropolis). The author mentions two important figures: Abdelkader ibn Muhieddine and Ben Badis, both of them are important when the process of rousing Algerians’ Islamic and national awareness is taken into consideration. Abdelkader and Badis were ulamas; Islamic intellectuals who tried to rouse Algerians by restoring importance of their language and culture. They did not want to rouse political awareness in people, but rather identity coming from moderate Islam. Moderate Islam was supposed to be the basis of resistance against “making the country more French” and at the same time depriving dignity. The author quotes fragments of Ben Badis’ reply directed to Ferhat Abbasa (who represented Members of Parliament compliant with France). The reply is of a great value when Algerians’ national liberation movement is taken into consideration.

Abstract:
The note reinterprets an important epigraphic testimony of the Ostrogoth age (ICUR I, 2794), published for the first time by Giovanni Battista de Rossi in 1894. It is a polymetric funeral eulogy commissioned among the Amali royal family, perhaps dedicated by Flavia Amala Amalafrida Theodenanda to one or more relatives, unless one wishes to identify her with one of the dedicatees of the eulogy. After a presentation of supportive material and a new edition of the text, the history of the discovery of the inscription is retraced, involving leading figures of the 19th century political and ecclesiastical culture including cardinal Vincenzo Vannutelli and H. Stevenson Jr., a pupil of de Rossi. The contribution dates the artifact between the end of the 5th century and the beginning of the 6th; it studies the hypothesis of identifying Amalafrida with one of the princesses in the family circle of King Theodoric and with the Ostrogothic wife of Flavius Maximus; it illustrates a hypothesis of the intended use of the epigraph for a funeral monument in the cemetery area of the Martyrial Basilica of S. Secondino on the Praenestina.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Hilda Doolittle, an American poet, playwright, and novelist known by the initials H.D., was one of the few female figures of the male-dominated early modernist era. Her early works are of crucial importance as they are associated with Imagism, the literary movement shaped by Ezra Pound as a reaction to the wordiness, indirectness, and sentimentality of Victorian and Romantic poetry. H.D. played an important role in Imagism. Ezra Pound, who suggested that Hilda Doolittle append the signature “H.D., Imagiste” to her works, introduced her as the leader of Imagism. Her first poetry collection, Sea Garden (1916), which includes twenty-seven poems, is a paragon of Imagist poetry. The poems were composed in free verse without thematic boundaries and with the use of harsh and impersonal style and diction, natural imagery, a melodious rhythm, and economical word choice. However, H.D.’s “The Garden,” an image-focused poem from this collection, goes far beyond Imagism. It is not simply a nature poem; the narrator glorifies fierce natural objects such as hard roses, rigorous winds, and thick air to represent women’s potential strength, resilience, and productivity. It also subverts the stereotypical representation of femininity and female vulnerability by displacing dominant patriarchal myths. The poem is brimming with encoded images that metaphorically reconstruct female imagery and representation. This paper investigates how “The Garden” unfolds hidden and disregarded concepts of femininity to reposition the female figure in the ideal imaginary “Garden” by saving her from the confinement of the man-made “Garden” in order to suggest a new representation of femininity, mirroring Pound’s call to “Make It New!”

Abstract:
‘Father Persons’ has long been a legendary figure of controversy. We cannot even agree on the spelling of his name. Most of his contemporaries called him Parsons, especially if they were hostile, but his correspondence and other manuscript evidence make it quite clear he preferred Persons. The variant spellings would not affect the pronunciation of his name, but ‘Parsons’ is a reminder of the rumour that he was the bastard son of a Somerset parson. Parsons or Persons, he was notorious in his day as a traitorous plotter and irrepressible controversialist, but today he is virtually ignored by literary scholars. The story is told of a meeting in 1954, on a train from Cambridge to Oxford, between C. S. Lewis and A. L. Rowse. Rowse congratulated his fellow-traveller on the recent publication of his History of English Literature in the Sixteenth Century—a work that itself was to become, for other reasons, the centre of controversy—pausing only to register some surprise at his treatment of prose: ‘You praise Cardinal Allen, who is really negligible and wrote very little, but you do not even mention Robert Parsons, the Jesuit who wrote over thirty books and was one of the most considerable prose writers of the Elizabethan period. Why?’ To this piece of donnish one-upmanship, Lewis bluffed: ‘I did not think he was important enough to be included.’ He hadn't read Persons.

Madness and Literature: The Other ViewAbstract: Madness and literature are intrinsicallyconjoined topics defined by that blurred line betweengenius and insanity. The figure of the ‘madman’ or theinsane has become staple symbol, analogy and parableto signify a world in crisis, and at times, the mirror andcatalyst of the critical consciousness of humankind. Inthis paper the concepts of madness and literature areexplored in two contemporary Latin American novelsfrom a feminine point of view. In both texts madness is atthe core and both use insanity to expose an alternateview of reality. Thus, a correlation of madness, literatureand gaze is created as if a particular connection betweensight and madness existed, or as if madness were theresult of being able to apprehend realities from analternative perspective. The two novels are La nave delos locos (1984) by Uruguayan Cristina Peri Rossi, andNadie me verá llorar (1999) by Mexican Cristina RiveraGarza. In both cases the topics of mad and madness willquestion and challenge the norms dictated by society.Key words: madness, reason and unreason, gaze/mirror, novel, feminine point of view.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article’s first aim is to find, the primary level of poly-product in Iranian banking section that causes the layout of the market between the banks become lower and bank concentration higher. To do that we use, the instance of Omni-product banks which is one of the most common approach developed by Penza & Rosse (1987). The first strand is related to bank cost function; and the other one to earnings multiproduct approach. In evaluating this experience-based examination and defining the effects of Omni-production on market penetration, we have applied a structural model to estimate demands on deposit services with study’s result like banks presenting traditional services such as loans and ATM cards. Additionally same modern facilities like brokerage services and capital bonds are of further market power versus those with only basic services. The economies of scope degree is sized via cost saving in scale of percentage which is produced through added figures of fruitful activities in comparison with only individual yield of product. Thus, so as to empirically distinguish economies of scope in poly-product banks, no.1 level of our investigation include modeling and speculating the function of bank’s cost.

A tripod-C60 molecule was synthesized and attached onto a Au-coated AFM tip. Using the tripod skeleton of the molecule, tripod-C60 was immobilized onto the Au surface in a dispersed and stable manner, as observed by XPS and AFM imaging. Using an AFM tip functionalized with the tripod-C60, waffle-type DNA origami was scanned under visible light irradiation. Upon scanning, DNA damage was clearly observed by AFM imaging at the single molecule level. Control experiments in the absence of C60 (tripod only), in the dark, or in the presence of L-histidine or D2O confirmed that the observed DNA damage was induced by singlet oxygen (1O2) generated from C60 under photoirradiation.

Jia Zhangke’s Still Life (Sānxiá hǎorén, 2006) was shot in Fengjie, shortly before its flooding brought about by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydropower station in terms of capacity. The film remakes the post-apocalyptic atmosphere found in European films made after the Second World War. From a web of cinephilic, intermedial and intertextual references, which inscribes Still Life in a local and global history of art and of film, this text compares the way Jia films his characters in a disappearing Fengjie with sequences from Roberto Rossellini’s Germany Year Zero (Germania anno zero, 1948) and Michelangelo Antonioni’s Red Desert (Il deserto rosso, 1964). While remaking the composition of ruins framing Edmund, in the first case, and in the second, a complex relation between background and figure in a deserted industrial landscape, Still Life creates a strange temporality, combining the imminence of a future catastrophe with the memory of past ones.

This paper studies the impact of spatial frictions on Asia's long-term spatial development. Using the framework provided in Desmet, Nagy, and Rossi-Hansberg ( 2016 ), we analyze the evolution of Asia's economy and the relative performance of specific regions and countries. We then perform a number of counterfactual experiments and find that a worldwide drop in transport costs of 40% increases the present discounted value of real income by 70.7% globally and 78% in Asia. These figures are much larger than those found in standard quantitative trade models because they include dynamic effects and take into account intracountry transport costs. We also perform exercises in which we upgrade Asia's road network or relax migratory restrictions between locations in Asia. These exercises emphasize the important role of spatial frictions in the development of Asia's economy.

Abstract:
In spite of its outstanding capacity for alloying with lithium, silicon cannot be practically used as a negative electrode for Li-ion batteries: its large volume expansion upon lithiation leads to a poor capacity retention [1]. Promising results have been obtained by incorporating methyl groups in amorphous silicon (methylated amorphous silicon). This material exhibits an improved stability upon electrochemical cycling while keeping a capacity close to that of pure silicon [2]. However, the conductivity of methylated amorphous silicon may be a strong limitation, especially at high methyl content: for example, 10% methylated amorphous silicon is 10000 more resistive than pure amorphous silicon. Doping is a well-known method to enhance the electronic conductivity of semiconductors, even if the dopant activity is lower in amorphous semiconductors than in crystalline ones. 2% boron doping increases the conductivity of 10% methylated amorphous silicon by five orders of magnitude compared to the undoped material. Boron doped methylated silicon thin films (100nm thick) with various methyl content were cycled in the range 0.025V – 1V at C/2 rate (electrolyte: LP30 with 5%FEC). 10% methylated amorphous silicon with 2% boron doping exhibits a capacity retention of 70% after 500 cycles of full lithiation/delithiation, an improved performance as compared to the undoped material (see Figure 1a). Interestingly, boron doping allows for using higher methyl content without demanding pre-conditioning procedures for the electrochemical cycling of the material. The stability upon cycling is found to be further increased for 15% and 20% methylated electrodes, with a capacity retention exceeding 80% over 1000 cycles of full lithiation/delithiation (Figure 1b). This figure comes at the expense of a decreased total capacity (which remains 3 to 4 times larger than that of the current carbon electrodes). The SEI evolution and structural changes are currently investigated using operando ATR FTIR and ex-situ Raman spectroscopies, in order to rationalize the factors limiting the Coulombic efficiency to 99.7%. Abstract:
Sleep disorders are common among elderly people, affecting about 50% compared with about 26% of younger adults. About two-thirds of residents in long-term care have sleep disturbance (Karacan & Williams, 1983; Becker & Jamieson, 1992). This high prevalence of sleep disorders results in excessive daytime napping, fatigue, cognitive impairment, increased psychiatric morbidity and increased prescribing of hypnotics, with an associated increase in mortality (Kripke et al, 1979). Karacan & Williams (1983) quote figures varying from 26 to 100% for the prescribing of hypnotics to residents in institutional care. This has major implications. There is a risk of both accidental and deliberate overdose. There may be interactions with other drugs and a hangover effect can impair daytime functioning. Excessive sedation can make the patient difficult to rouse in an emergency. Dependence may occur and the drugs may further disrupt sleep. They also increase the likelihood of sleep apnoea.

Abstract:
In October of 1904, when Edith Wharton was writing The House of Mirth and Henry James, having recently arrived in America after a twenty-two-year absence, was collecting the impressions that were to make up The American Scene, James paid a two-week visit to Wharton at the Mount, her country house in Lenox, Massachusetts. The visit consolidated their friendship and literary relationship. In the mornings, both wrote. In the afternoons, Wharton and James “motored” together, enjoying the beauty of a Western Massachusetts autumn, and they conversed deep into the evenings (Benstock, 144–45; Edel, 598). The claim that Wharton's fiction is heavily influenced by James's, frequently reiterated ever since Wharton began her career, has become a critical commonplace (Lewis, 131). But reading passages side by side from the works both writers were in the process of creating in the fall of 1904, The House of Mirth and The American Scene, yields as much evidence of Wharton's influence on James as of James's influence on Wharton, an influence established probably for the most part through their conversations. In this essay, I contend that the shared imagery in the work of the two writers — involving roses, skyscrapers, and Trinity Church, and centering on the figure of the Jew — makes most sense when the two writers are read in conjunction. Read together, the shared imagery in James and Wharton passages suggests that the two together imagined the Jew as the figure for a commercialized, industrialized, modern America, and for the impossibility of art in such an America — and that they found a mutual consolation in doing so. Wharton's later novels, two of which I consider in this essay (The Glimpses of the Moon [1922] and Hudson River Bracketed [1929]) demonstrate that her conversations about these matters with James, and their shared understanding of the Jews, remained important to her for a quarter of a century. Toward the end of her career, she attempted to forge a similar bond of shared aesthetic sensibility and mutual anti-Semitism with the younger writer F. Scott Fitzgerald, but without success.
