Maidment, Jane M. "Social work field education in New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Social Work, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4633.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this research dissertation is social work field education in New Zealand. The purpose of conducting the study was to ascertain how both students and field educators experienced teaching and learning in the field. Results indicate that while teaching and learning thinking and theory have evolved in recent years to include a critical reflective dimension, the practice of field education is still largely based on an apprenticeship model. Practice experience and theoretical input relating to areas of societal inequality as well as the political context in which field education is delivered explain the continued use of the apprenticeship model. Students and field educators do, however, share a vision for how field education should be delivered. They agree on the attributes of an effective field educator, and on the methods needed to enhance practice teaching and learning. The research has, nevertheless, identified a discrepancy between this shared vision for field education and the reality that students experience in the field. Field educators are clearly marginalised in their role. Their work as educators is not sanctioned or recognised by employing agencies, and workload pressure frequently militates against social workers being able to accommodate students on placement. In this climate a minimalist approach to field education is adopted, resulting in unqualified social work staff and people who are not social workers acting as field educators. Without radical shifts in the recognition, resourcing and organisation of field education, student learning in the field will continue to be compromised. The theoretical framework used in this research was derived from existing learning theory, which was then reconceptualised and developed in light of the research outcomes to formulate a contemporary theory for practicum learning.

Hayes, Richard J. "Published work in the field of Tropical Epidemiology." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30259.

Full text
Abstract:
The submitted publications relate to research on the epidemiology and control of diseases of importance in developing countries, and fall into two main classes. The first consists of research on methodological issues in statistics and epidemiology arising in the course of the field research. The second consists of substantive epidemiological research carried out in collaboration with scientists in developing countries over twenty years. The methodological research includes work on methods for assessing whether the change in a measured value depends on its initial value; alternative measures of diarrhoea morbidity; design issues in vaccine trials; use of the case-control study design to investigate risk factors for severe malaria; the development and validation of verbal autopsy instruments to diagnose cause of death in countries with inadequate vital resignation; studies of the bias resulting from poor methodological quality in randomised controlled trials; and use of attributable fraction methods to estimate the proportion of febrile episodes attributable to malaria and to evaluate alternative malaria case definitions. Design issues in cluster-randomised trials, particularly in the context of HIV intervention trials in developing countries, are also discussed. Among many publications on HIV infection is a key paper discussing the interaction of HIV and other sexually-transmitted disease (STDs). This argued the need for randomised trials of the impact of STD control on the HIV epidemic, and led to the first such trial in Mwanza Region, Tanzania. The Mwanza trial showed that improved STD treatment services resulted in a 40% reduction in HIV incidence in the general population, and that the intervention was highly cost-effective. This was the first randomised trial anywhere in the world to demonstrate the impact of prevention measures on HIV incidence in the general population. Other papers explore risk factors for HIV-1, HIV-2 and other STDs in a range of settings, the interaction of HIV and tuberculosis, the natural history of HIV infection, simulation models of HIV and other STDs, and the use of Herpes simplex virus type 2 infection as a marker of sexual risk behaviour in rural Africa.

Hemy, Melanie. "Persisting in Field Education: Social Work Student Experiences." Thesis, Griffith University, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/405205.

Full text
Abstract:
Field education is a core component within social work education and vital to enable students to integrate their learning and professional practice. In addition to the challenges associated with undertaking tertiary studies, many also have to balance this new role of ‘student’ with other roles and responsibilities. Undertaking field placement can therefore present as a barrier to their persistence. This research was designed to address gaps in knowledge about the experience of social work students and strategies they adopt in order to persist with field education. To explore these issues further, 16 Master of Social Work students were recruited to participate in two semi-structured, in-depth interviews. In contrast to other field education research, student perspectives were sought at two different points in placement. The research explored their experience focussing on what students perceived as being helpful or as hindering their field education. The methodological framework adopted was founded on an understanding of social constructivism that acknowledges the socially constructed nature of knowledge and the existence of multiple realities. This approach matched the exploratory nature of the study. Consideration of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory in the research design and analysis, contributed to the development of a Framework that took the perspective of student persistence from within a sociocultural context of social work field education. These two perspectives, combined with the influence of narrative research theory, enabled a research design that has deepened an appreciation of the experience of persistence in field education to be exposed and meanings to be understood. The results of the research revealed new knowledge about the breadth of factors that influence students’ field education and how they persist. The study concluded that students engage in a finely balanced and complex process to manage the competing roles, responsibilities, and other influential factors within their environment. Furthermore, the thesis concludes that there are aspects of the field education context and the wider environment that are significant to persistence, but over which students have little control. The findings have long term implications for social work field education which need addressing through research and change.

Abstract:
This study explores the field of social work values in the social work profession. The aim of the study is to explore how social work values are related to empowerment practices and organizational structures inside the social work field. By using the perspective of empowerment and professional doxa these structures inside the social work field are explored in interviews with nine social workers. These nine interviews show how social workers relate to values insides their profession, how empowerment practices are done, and what kind of organizational conflicts social workers may experience. By using the perspectives of empowerment and professional doxa the interviews been analysed and connected to both local and global concerns for the social work field. Many professional conflicts were found by taking these perspectives that are discussed in this study, as for example role conflicts social workers could experience. Other conflicts were those of structural failures that caused harm to client contacts and economic factors that were deemed more important for organizations than good client outcomes.

Abstract:
Notwithstanding the importance attributed to teaching students to integrate theory and practice in field education, little is published of how Field Educators undertake this task. This thesis explores how Field Educators worked with students to teach them how to integrate theory and practice. The research adopted a social constructionist perspective and used a qualitative methodology to analyse a series of case studies undertaken with six Field Educators as they supervised students. The participants were experienced Field Educators working in diverse contexts of practice with students from a range of universities and social work programmes in Australia. The method incorporated two steps. First, a supervision session was videotaped as it occurred between Field Educator and student, followed by a review of the session with the Field Educator to further elucidate the reasoning behind the strategies and processes used in their session with the student. This process resulted in three groups of data—one from the video-tapes, another from the session review and a third from the observational data which consisted of the researcher’s analysis. The findings were investigated using thematic analysis. The results were analysed first within cases and then across cases, building a picture of common themes in the processes used to teach students. The results showed that, while Field Educators developed linkages between theories and practices with students, they did not focus primarily on this. Nor did they use the concept of integration. The findings also indicated that Field Educators did not use models, competency-based teaching or evidence-based practice. Rather, they developed their own epistemology for supervision. They employed a fluid process of discussion and reflection as they co-produced theoretical concepts with students. This discussion moved between facilitative and didactic processes, according to the Field Educator’s considered assessment of the student’s abilities in the context of practice issues which students raised. They viewed this aspect of supervision as one part of their role of assisting students to achieve their learning goals as they progressed along a pathway to becoming competent practitioners. They saw themselves as practitioners, rather than educators. They appeared to know little about what the universities were teaching, and made few references to the supervision requirements of the Australian Association of Social Workers. Overall, they appeared to take the context of their practice for granted and did not discuss the discourses at play in their work. These supervisors seemed to work largely in isolation, raising questions about the adequacy of preparation for social work in an Australian environment which is hostile to the values of the profession.

Gollick, Michael John. "Optimising roadheader performance based on laboratory and field work." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1999. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/30934/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis covers in detail a study of the excavation of rock salt by roadheader, the factors affecting performance and finally a specification with operational results of a new production machine to suit the South African Coal Mining Industry. Dosco Overseas Engineering Ltd. the author's employer, is introduced. Reference is made to how, over the years, performance prediction has radically changed from a mere approximation to a position where an accurate value with a performance guarantee is a necessity. Reference is made to the Universities of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Nottingham and Leeds who have been the main suppliers of rock testing facilities. The University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne has had further responsibilities for a specific test programme, funded by Dosco, to establish a Performance Prediction Methodology. A general introduction to the trial site at Domtar Salt, located in Canada, is given, along with the current mining methods and the particular aspects requiring consideration if machine mining were to be adopted. A detailed study over a twelve month period covering three main topics; fines production, performance rates, and cutter pick suitability is described. Results are discussed at length and valuable conclusions are drawn. Extrapolation of the results to predict the performance of a larger machine suitable to Domtar's high production requirements is shown. The ability to relate this study to other applications and, in particular, the aspect of pick penetration and its effect on machine design is discussed. A prediction curve suitable for South African coal is shown, along with the necessary calculations to enable a high production rate and the corresponding effect on machine design. Specification features, such as boom force, cutter head design and cutter motor power, are considered at length. The implications for the machine manufacturer for even larger, more powerful machines is shown. An early correlation· of findings is established by comparison to field results from a smaller single boom, Dosco roadheader. The study concludes that current or new machine design can be favourably influenced to reflect varying market requirements and that accurate prediction of machine performance is possible. A later, overall study of the TB2500 shows achieved production rates and comments in particular, on machine mining rate and available mining time. Recommendations having particular reference to the equipment suppliers involvement in the sales procedure are given.

Lim, Wee Kiat. "Field work| Constructing a new emergency management organizational field in China in the post-SARS era." Thesis, University of Colorado at Boulder, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3621368.

Full text
Abstract:

My dissertation traces the genesis and growth of the Chinese emergency management organizational field over the ten-year period since the 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak. I conducted my fieldwork in Beijing in 2012, using a multi-method approach that involved interviews, participant observation, and analysis of archival materials.

I found that governing elites and academic experts within the emerging field—what I call the "establishment"—relied upon insider cultural knowledge (e.g., myths) and party-state ideologies (e.g., communist folklore) to legitimize a new risk governance framework and create an emergency management policy domain separate from existing domains. The emergency management establishment enabled these legitimizing claims through its embedded position in government and academia. By using a strategy of curation, it carefully (re)assembled culturally-accepted accounts and ideas, both indigenous and adapted from afar, to create its claims. By becoming institutional evangelists, academic experts in particular entrenched the risk governance framework and propagated the ideas that helped form the field by advocating, advising, and training government officials through multiple field organizational entities.

By also incorporating Foucault's concept of governmentality, I found that the legitimacy project conducted by the establishment consisted of shaping the conduct of emergency management government officials according to its own risk governance framework. This expands current Foucauldian studies on governmentality by highlighting that not only the general population but also elites can be subjected to governmentalization. It also provides a more nuanced reading of the "hollowing of the state" thesis by highlighting how the Chinese party-state strengthened its role as the legitimate emergency manager by including the civil society and the private sector, albeit in lesser roles.

My findings draw attention to the foundational quality of cognitive legitimacy vis-à-vis pragmatic and moral legitimacy, an area which has received scant discussion in the neoinstitutional literature. It also informs the understudied topic of the interrelated influences of power relations, ideas, and experts on emerging organizational field formation within neoinstitutional theory, especially in a non-Western context. Finally, my research updates current understanding of national emergency management policies in the international arena, and especially in China.

Full text
Abstract:
Interest in the area of virtual work continues to increase with articles being written from different disciplinary perspectives - e.g. information systems (IS), management, psychology and transportation. In this paper, we map research on virtual work to (a) understand the intellectual base from which this field has emerged, (b) explore how this field has evolved over time, and (c) identify clusters of research themes that have emerged over time and the relationships between them. Specifically, we use co-citation analysis of research published in all social science disciplines to map the field at three points in time - 1995, 2000 and 2006. Our results show that the field has grown from nine research clusters in 1995 to sixteen in 2006. A comparison across these maps suggests that research in the cluster of "virtual teams" has gained significance even as research within some earlier clusters such as "urban planning and transportation" has lost ground. Our longitudinal analysis identifies relevant concepts, theories and methodologies that have emerged in the field of virtual work. This analysis can help interested researchers identify how they may want to contribute to the field of virtual work - by adding to popular clusters, enriching emerging smaller clusters or by acting as bridges across clusters. Although extensive research has been conducted on urban freeway capacity estimation methods, minimal research has been carried out for rural highway sections, especially sections within work zones. This study filled that void for rural highways in Kansas. This study estimated capacity of rural highway work zones in Kansas. Six work zone locations were selected. An average of six days’ worth of field data was collected, from mid-October 2013 to late November 2013, at each of these work zone sites. Two capacity estimation methods were utilized, including the Maximum Observed 15-minute Flow Rate Method and the Platooning Method divided into 15-minute intervals. The Maximum Observed 15-minute Flow Rate Method provided an average capacity of 1469 passenger cars per hour per lane (pcphpl) with a standard deviation of 141 pcphpl, while the Platooning Method provided a maximum average capacity of 1195 pcphpl and a standard deviation of 28 pcphpl. Based on observed data and analysis carried out in this study, the recommended capacity to be used is 1500 pcphpl when designing work zones for rural highways in Kansas. This research provides the proposed standard value of rural highway work zone capacities so engineers and city planners can effectively mitigate congestion that would have otherwise occurred due to impeding construction/maintenance.

Abstract:
This article seeks to reflect on anthropological work in the field of higher education policy, specifically in the area of University Extension. This proposal tackles this issue from my own professional performance at a national public university in Argentina. I briefly summarize key aspects of one of the programs where I participated, as well as its corresponding institutional framework. The relevance of the case lies in its potential to reflect on anthropological praxis, and it encompasses several issues related to my daily work. Anthropological praxis crosscuts the various stages or levels which compose «extension» policies, namely design, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. My purpose is to analyze the anthropologist’s intervention in this area —university extension—, that represents the «nexus» between the university and the community », in order to contribute to social transformation. However, this perspective emphasizes (or probably emphasized?) knowledge transfer. I examine the notion of extension and the new concepts that are gaining ground. To think applied anthropology, I consider the following topics: the critical distance and the empathic involvement; the «applicability» of concepts and ethnographic methodologies, anthropology as a praxis; and, finally, interdisciplinary work.

Mamakwa, Sekgena Melidah. "The experiences of labour inspectors in their field of work." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/27489.

Full text
Abstract:
There are experiences that labour inspectors undergo when doing their jobs. In Brazil, (Labour Inspectors: Killings 2005:1), the use of physical violence against labour inspectors led to armed federal police officer travelling with labour inspectors, after the murder of three labour inspectors in the Soya Plantation which was allegedly using illegal slave labourers. Rice (2006:26) pointed out that labour inspectors enforce the labour laws and related regulations and apply national standards and report to supervisors on problems and defects not covered by regulations. A qualitative study was used to collect data using one-on-one semi-structured interviews from 15 labour inspectors at 15 labour centres in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The aim of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of labour inspectors in their field of work. The researcher read the informed consent form for the participants and they signed and permitted the researcher to use an audio recorder (see annexure B). The following experiences are identified and described: expectations of DOL when conducting an inspection, fulfillment, frustrations, frustration management, and challenges in the field of work, support systems and tools of trade. The limitation of this study was the collection of data. Geographically, Mpumalanga Province (South Africa) is big and it was time consuming and financially costly to access the inspectors. They also had tight schedules to allocate time for the research interviews.

Orton, Madelene Richardson. "School-to-Work Reform in Action: Reflections from the Field." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/145095.

Full text
Abstract:
The School-to-Work Opportunities Act of 1994 provided seed monies to educational institutions, if they were willing to form collaborative partnerships with members of the business and employer communities. The goal was to build learning opportunities for students that would facilitate their seamless transition from the public school system into adult work-settings and/or places of post-secondary education, training, and skills acquisition. An historical case study of school reform was conducted, using qualitative research methods that included extensive field observations, participant interviews, document analysis, narrative inquiry strategies, phenomenological reflection and data reduction. The lived experiences of 23 students and 14 community partners were juxtaposed against the recollected memories of the teacher-researcher, and analyzed in the context of complex change theory (Ambrose, 1987). The point was to distill the essential themes that could shed light on the research question. Those factors that were deemed to be influential in the development, delivery, or efficacy of the learning opportunities that were created as curriculum interventions, in support of this one piece of federal legislation, are discussed analytically, so as to make recommendations for similar practical programs with a career-education or work-based learning focus.

Abstract:
The relationships between work and personal life have been on the public, business, and research agenda for about 35 years. Perspectives on these relationships have shifted from a work-family to work-life or work-personal life focus, from a conflict to a balance or enrichment view and, finally, from a segmentation to an integration perspective. This evolution, however, leads to a theoretical and practical impasse where neither integration nor segmentation can be seen as the absolute individual, organisational and societal value. This thesis takes the discussion one step further and focuses on individuals’ work/non-work experiences, calling for a humanistic case. The humanistic case urges placing individuals’ work/non-work experiences at the centre of human resources and at the centre of the work-life field. The aim of the thesis is to theorise individuals’ work/non-work experiences in their individual, organisational and societal contexts. To achieve the purpose, the thesis presents individuals’ work/non-work self-narratives. These self-narratives of six French middle-managers, three men and three women, underline how individuals experience their diverse life domains, namely the work, the family, the social and the private and their management. The self-narratives have been generated through in-depth qualitative interviews and diaries. The thesis explores and provides an understanding of individuals’ work/non-work experiences from a boundary perspective. Focusing on the processes behind individuals’ work/non-work experiences, the thesis reveals that work/non-work preferences for integration and/or segmentation are not sufficient to understand individuals’ experiences. It is essential to consider the preferences in relation to their level of explicitness and the development of work/non-work self-identity. Moreover, it is important to understand the roles of positive and negative work/non-work emotions emerging in the work/non-work process as a respective signal of individuals’ satisfaction or dissatisfaction in how their life domains are developed and managed. The thesis contributes to the work-life field, especially the boundary perspective on work and non-work by presenting a model of individuals’ work/non-work experiences. The model pursued is derived from 33 theoretical propositions. The study suggests a two-dimensional approach for life domain boundaries as a systematic combination of seven boundary types (spatial, temporal, human, cognitive, behavioural, emotional and psychosomatic) and their mental and concrete natures. It suggests a three-dimensional model for work/non-work preferences, revealing five major archetypes of work/non-work preferences between segmentation and integration, and stressing the emotional side of the work/non-work process. It shows that individuals value segmentation on a daily basis and integration on a long-term. This thesis concludes that segmenting and integrating is essential for the harmony of their life domains namely their work, their family, their social and their private.

Abstract:
Emerging diseases currently represent 65% of recent major disease outbreaks. Of them, 75% are associated with wildlife. Recently, an increasing number of newly discovered viruses have been associated with small terrestrial mammals, particularly with rodents, pointing at this group as one of the most dangerous potential sources of emerging or re-emerging diseases. To meet these challenges for public health, a proper surveillance becomes necessary, which passes by detection of pathogens in human and risky groups of animals, including field investigations. Yet this can be achieved only by using proper techniques of samples treatment and pathogen detection. Currently, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the main tool used for the detection of pathogens in routine diagnostic and research. Yet, several researches showed that some substances can inhibit PCR, causing false-negative results. Therefore, we initiated a screening program targeting rodents for the presence of known and unidentified viruses. A total of 1441 rodents were trapped during field campaigns organized in Europe and Africa, between 2002 and 2011. At first we investigated on PCR inhibitors and discussed techniques of treatment of samples allowing reducing the influence of inhibitors in rodent samples. Among the extraction techniques tested, EZ1 virus mini kit and RNAnow extraction reagent were more effective than NucleoSpin virus kit or TRIzol extraction reagent. Also, the use of lungs and kidneys was preferable to the use of liver and spleen, the quantity of inhibitors being higher in the last two organs. No significant difference was observed between storage at -80°C, or in RNAlater RNA stabilization reagent

Abstract:
Once women were the pioneers within the tech industry, but during the past decades the number of women who choose a career within computer science has decreased rapidly. The imbalance raises the question if the tech industry has been adapted for a more masculine way. The lack of female participation in Information Technology (IT) education and professional work is a challenging and constant issue. This problematic is now a well-documented research area, but the causes and remedies remain puzzling and complex. A quantitative study and literature review aims to shed light on one of the possible underlying issues, which might be prevented men to acknowledge and to discuss gender imbalances, and be a part of the solution: the fear to lose all privileges the norm has historically provided them. Thus, this project aims to bring awareness to those hegemonic groups and urge them to improve conditions by using their power status as a firststep towards to fixing the system and a generation of equity conditions, so everybody could have access to the same opportunities to develop a satisfactory professional career within the IT field.

Abstract:
Geographic Information System (GIS) is a technology that can help collect, edit, store, manage, transform, analyze and represent data. This research aimed to show how mobile GIS application can  be designed, developed and applied to electric field work. An Android mobile application, which had been integrated with GIS was developed in Java. The prototype was tested and evaluated by employees of China Southern Power Grid (CSG). The resulting mobile application had three important features and functionalities: map view, location and electrical object querying, and attribute viewing and editing. According to the results of the user testing, the advantages of the application were its improved performance as brought about by the different scales used in the maps, its clear layout, and the speed of completing the query tasks. The disadvantages, on the other hand, were restrictions in the data types used and the query window. The study showed that with wireless communication, GPS and Location-based (LBS) supplements, electric utilities can benefit from this mobile GIS application in the following aspects: 1) eliminate the obstacles of going out in the field; 2) increase the flexibility of field work by faster access to data; 3) increase the accuracy and efficiency of field workers by dealing with the querying and editing task, and field mapping on a portable devices in real time. According to these aspects, electric field work can easily be enhanced by saving time, resources, and costs.

Scaggs, Anne Marie. "Student Perspectives on Application of Theory to Practice in Field Practicums." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6112.

Full text
Abstract:
The field practicum is designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate knowledge and practice prior to graduation; however, students continue to lack the ability to connect theory to practice within the field practicum. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the beliefs, attitudes, and perspectives of social work students regarding the application of theory to practice within the field practicum. The conceptual framework included concepts of empowerment, empowerment theory, and social constructivism. The research question addressed how social work students at a local university described the issues related to connecting theory to practice within the field practicum. Data collection involved interviews with 6 social work practicum students, observations, and document analysis. Data were coded and analyzed to identify 4 themes: learned theories, concerns, theory to practice, and student beliefs related to theory and practice. Findings confirmed students' inability to connect theory to practice. Findings were used to develop a project incorporating simulated learning environments in social work curricula to increase the connection of theory to practice. Findings may be used to enhance students' ability to integrate theory into practice, which may strengthen the profession of social work through improved service delivery at local, state, national, and global levels.

Newman, Ashley D. "Contributing Factors to Burnout Development in the Mental Health Field: A Systematic Review." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/484.

Full text
Abstract:
A significant amount of previous research has addressed burnout among mental health professionals who work with individuals with severe and persistent mental disorders. Multiple issues can contribute to burnout including organizational factors, severity of client diagnosis, and low quality supervision (Lasalvia et al., 2009, Ballenger-Browning et al., 2011, Kozlawska, Nunn, & Cousens, 1997). The purpose of this study is to identify the most critical elements of burnout among public mental health professionals. This study is a systematic review, using 10 key articles, of existing literature on elements of burnout and contributing factors to developing burnout in public mental health professionals. The search yielded three major categories of dynamics: client specific characteristics, individual worker characteristics, and organizational/environmental characteristics. Identifying the red flag contributors to burnout in this segment of social work will be essential informing clinician’s practice in public mental health. Additionally, the findings from this study may be effective in macro practice in informing large-scale trainings for social workers as well as policy and legislation.

Abstract:
Background One central task within nursing is health promotion, which can be done at different levels. Primary prevention aims to promote health and protect against illness by preventing problems before they occur. HIV is still a worldwide issue, yet Ethiopia is one country where efforts at preventing the spread of the virus have had positive results. Aim This study aimed to describe how nurses in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, work with primary prevention to minimise the spread of HIV. Method The study was conducted as a qualitative field study at a hospital in Addis Ababa. Semi-structured interviews were held with seven nurses at four different units. Content analysis was used to analyse the data. Result The nurses mentioned various efforts of preventing HIV, where the main findings describe the different hands-on methods at their unit as well as the nurses’ frequent work with health education and information. An additional finding outlines the setting in which the nurses carry out their preventive work. Conclusion In conclusion, the nurses worked in a variety of ways to prevent the spread of the virus to themselves and to their patients. Screening was an important effort to minimise the exposure to other non-infected individuals. Health education and information were quoted by the majority of the nurses, but it was impacted by the awareness that the patients already exhibited. The findings show the multitude of efforts attempted at all units, which highlight the significant presence and value of health promotion within nursing.

Koskie, Timothy Benjamin. "Mapping Moderation: Cultural Intermediation Work and the Field of Journalism in Online Newsrooms." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18809.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the work of moderating and managing audience comments in two Australian online news organisations to find how their staff conceive, practice, value, and develop these new intermediary duties. Using a Bourdieusian analytical framework, it examines whether these work roles operate as new forms of cultural intermediation in news production and how they are influenced by ‘the field of journalism’, which comprises journalism’s power relations, norms, logics and history. Using interviews and participant observation, this study comprehensively documents the distinct objectives, tasks and practices of comment moderators and community managers, as well as identifying the people, aspects of social and cultural capital, and organisational systems that have influenced their approaches to the work. The study demonstrates that comment moderation and management work culturally intermediate between the organisation, readers, and commenters as fringe producers, with a focus on communicating the organisation’s vision for comment sections. However, it finds a distinction between the tasks and workplace status of comment moderators and community managers and reveals prioritisation’s importance in shaping discussions’ flow and tenor. The field of journalism significantly influences this work, as workers with journalism experience evaluated comments based on their contribution or adherence to journalistic values. Participants’ field alignment also affected how they moderated comments or managed their community, with most comparing their comment sections and practices to those of other prominent journalistic organisations. These results show the need for more development of cultural intermediation strategies and techniques to enable online news organisations to build constructive commenting communities while communicating their editorial values.

West, Ryan Matthew. "Work function fluctuation analysis of polyaniline films." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/47586.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, the development of a novel experimental technique for measuring the spontaneous, stochastic work function (WF) fluctuations of conducting polymer films, at equilibrium, is discussed. Polyaniline (PANI) is studied as a representative conducting polymer. This technique utilizes an insulated-gate field-effect transistor (IGFET) with PANI gate electrode (PANI-IGFET). The fluctuations of PANI WF are transduced into measurable drain current fluctuations of the device. By analyzing these fluctuations while systematically controlling the temperature, electric field and doping level, a model of WF fluctuations in PANI films is developed. These experiments suggest that the source of WF fluctuations is the hopping of charge carriers, or trapping/detrapping of charge carriers, around the Fermi level of the PANI film at the PANI-insulator interface. This process is thermally activated with a field and doping dependent activation energy in the range of 0.1 to 0.5 eV. Thus, this new technique provides detailed information about charge-carrier dynamics in the space-charge region of the PANI film, at equilibrium. These results have important implications for organic electronics and furthering fundamental understanding of the relationship between doping, disorder and work function in organic semiconductors.

Alperin, Diane Elias. "Factors associated with social work student satisfaction with field placements in child welfare by Diane Elias Alperin." FIU Digital Commons, 1995. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1227.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was conducted during the 1994-1995 academic year. Seven social work education programs in the state of Florida, all accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, participated in this study. Graduate and undergraduate social work students in child welfare field placements, and their field instructors, were surveyed during the Spring 1995 semester to assess their satisfaction with field placements ii this area and the relationship of this satisfaction to employment interests and field placement recommendations. The majority of social work students responding to this survey were generally satisfied with several aspects of their field placements--the learning, field work program, field instructor, child welfare agency, and overall field experience. The field instructors were generally more satisfied than the students, but only statistically different from the students in the areas of satisfaction with the field work program and the child welfare agency. Multiple regression analysis revealed that learning assignment opportunities, field instructor relationship characteristics, placement preference, and pre-placement interview contributed to the prediction of student satisfaction. Student satisfaction in field placement was significantly related to the acceptance of employment, if offered, and the recommendation of the field placement to other students. Logistic regression analysis revealed that satisfaction with the child welfare agency was the greatest contributor to the prediction of acceptance of employment, and satisfaction with the field work program was the greatest contributor to the prediction of field placement recommendation.

Lynch, Sienna. "AN EXPLORATION OF SOCIAL WORKER RISK IN THE FIELD WHEN WORKING WITH VULNERABLE ADULTS AND THEIR DESIRE FOR SAFETY TRAINING." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/482.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored the risk that social workers face in the field while serving vulnerable adults to determine if there is need to implement mandated safety training based on social worker experiences and their desire for initial safety training. There needs to be a clear understanding of risks faced by social workers and their desire for safety training to implement safety standards and training for social workers across the board in social service agencies and academic institutions. There is minimal research currently on this topic and thus this study is paving the way for future research, as well as providing insight to risks faced by social workers who conduct field visits. This quantitative study presents different field situations that have put the social worker’s personal safety at risk and desire for safety training based on their personal experience. The results show a desire and need for mandatory safety training prior to entering the field. The results show a positive correlation between years in the field and risks faced in the field. Additionally, there was a positive correlation between age and desire for field safety training. There were differences found in risks experienced and desire for safety training by gender, education and ethnicity. This study is the start to understanding safety risks faced by social workers in the field and suggests developing safety training policy to ensure social worker safety in the field in both social service agencies and academic institutions.
