Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, we deal with polaritons as a “quantum fluid of light”, described by variants of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. We discuss how interactions between flowing polaritons and a defect allow to study their superfluid regime and generate topological defects. Including spin gives rise to an effective magnetic field (polariton spin-orbit coupling) that acts on the topological defects—half-solitons and half-vortices—behaving as effective magnetic monopoles. We describe various techniques to create periodic potentials, that can lead to the formation of polaritonic bands and gaps with a unique flexibility. Special focus is given to topologically nontrivial bands, leading to a polariton topological insulator, based on a polariton graphene analog.

Abstract:
Chapter 29 covers how a field of scientific research is often transformed by the influence of ideas or modes of thought from a quite different field. Though this can often be highly beneficial, it can also have negative effects, involving an inappropriate attempted expansion of the domain of the intervening science, something the author of this chapter has referred to in the past as “scientific imperialism.” This chapter explores the application of evolutionary ideas to psychiatry and diagnoses this as an example of such undesirable imperialism. At least in the neo-Darwinian guise in which evolutionary ideas have been applied to psychiatry, they suffer the fatal defect of treating psychiatric conditions as genetically determined responses to the environment. It is argued in this chapter that they should rather be seen as outcomes of a complex and multifactorial developmental process to which evolved genetic factors have very limited relevance.

Abstract:
Visual Fields: Examination and Interpretation, 3rd edition contains revisions and updates of earlier material as well as a discussion of newer techniques for assessing visual field disorders. The book begins with a short history of the field of perimetry and goes on to present basic clinical aspects of examination and diagnosis of visual field defects in the optic nerve, optic disc, chorioretina, optic chiasm, optic tract, lateral geniculate field bodies, and the calcarine complex. Additional aspects of visual field examination are explored including those of monocular, binocular, and junctional field defects, congruity vs. incongruity, macular sparing vs. macular splitting, density, wedge-shaped homonymous field loss, and monocular temporal crescent. Various new techniques of automated perimetry are also considered including SITA, FASTPAC, and SWAP. This volume provides a very useful overview of the techniques of visual field examination in a number of eye disorders and will be of interest to all ophthalmologists, neuro-opthalmologists, retina specialists, and optometrists.

Full text
Abstract:
The only fields of the Standard Model whose masses are not protected by a symmetry are the scalar fields. Supersymmetry is a symmetry between fermions and bosons which provides precisely such a protection mechanism. This chapter presents a comprehensive study of supersymmetric field theories. In particular, it is shown that they do not suffer from the phenomenon of gauge hierarchy. They have remarkable renormalisation properties and offer the most attractive framework to build a unified theory. The breaking of supersymmetry, both explicit and spontaneous, is studied in detail. The generalisation of electric-magnetic duality in supersymmetric theories yields non-perturbative results and the concept of twist makes possible the study of topological field theories. The supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model is shown to predict the existence of new elementary particles, whose phenomenological properties are analysed.

Hendriks, Herman G. D., and Joost T. M. de Wolf. Haematological and coagulation disorders and anaesthesia. Edited by Philip M. Hopkins. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199642045.003.0084.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter covers the principal haematological disorders and their implications for anaesthesia. Haemoglobin concentration is the main determinant of oxygen delivery to the tissues making anaemia a potential concern for the anaesthetist. In deciding whether to correct anaemia with a red blood cell transfusion, the anaesthetist must consider the nature of the surgery and the underling cause of the anaemia as well as the haemoglobin concentration. Techniques to limit the need for blood transfusion and the complications of transfusion are discussed. Perfect haemostasis means control of bleeding without the occurrence of thrombotic events. Coagulation management requires an understanding of this balance and the knowledge that altered coagulation activity may result in clinically relevant bleeding or, in contrast, thrombosis. Therefore, the key in haemostasis is an understanding that every anticoagulant action enhances the risk of bleeding and every procoagulant action enhances the risk of thrombosis. If a specific defect in the haemostatic system is known, treatment is tailored to restore this defect. However, tests to predict surgical bleeding do not exist, as it is for test to predict thrombotic events. The strengths and limitations of coagulation tests should be appreciated before they are used to assist clinical decision-making in the perioperative period. An excellent coagulation test is the clinical field (i.e. the surgical wound). If there are abnormalities in the coagulation tests without clinical bleeding, a correction is hardly necessary. In patients taking anticoagulant medication, consideration must be given on an individual patient basis, to the relative risks of continuing (bleeding) or stopping (thrombotic events) the medication.

Full text
Abstract:
This book introduces quantum field theory, together with its most important applications to cosmology and astroparticle physics, in a coherent framework. The path-integral approach is employed right from the start, and the use of Green functions and generating functionals is illustrated first in quantum mechanics and then in scalar field theory. Massless spin one and two fields are discussed on an equal footing, and gravity is presented as a gauge theory in close analogy with the Yang–Mills case. Concepts relevant to modern research such as helicity methods, effective theories, decoupling, or the stability of the electroweak vacuum are introduced. Various applications such as topological defects, dark matter, baryogenesis, processes in external gravitational fields, inflation and black holes help students to bridge the gap between undergraduate courses and the research literature.

Sutton, Adrian P. Physics of Elasticity and Crystal Defects. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198860785.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Mechanical properties of crystalline materials are almost always dominated by the defects within them. The ability to shape metals into pipes, girders and furniture stems from the generation, motion and interaction of these defects. Defects are also the agents of chemical changes within crystals, enabling mass transport by atomic diffusion and changes of phase. Defects distort the crystal and these distortions enable defects to interact over large distances. The theory of elasticity is used to describe these interactions. Assuming no familiarity with the theory, this book introduces the reader to linear elasticity and its application to point defects, dislocations and cracks. A unique feature of the book is the attention given to the atomic structure of defects and its influence on their properties and their elastic fields. Where it is available brief biographical information is provided about prominent contributors to the field. This textbook is written for postgraduate students in physics, engineering and materials science. It is very likely that even those students with some knowledge of elasticity and defects will find much that is new to them in this book. There are exercises to help the student check their understanding as they work through each chapter. The student is guided through more advanced problems at the end of each chapter. Worked solutions to all exercises and problems are available to course instructors from the OUP website. The last chapter describes four technologically important areas requiring fundamental research, with suggestions for possible PhD projects.

Abstract:
As the early universe cools down, it may perform transitions to phases with more and more broken symmetries. In a first-order phase transition, fields may be trapped in the false vacuum; the rate of the resulting tunneling process to the true vacuum is derived. Phase transitions can lead also to the formation of topological defects. Their structure and the reason for their stability are discussed.
