Abstract:
The purpose of this book is to critically enhance the appreciation of Diplomacy and Sport in global affairs from the perspective of practitioners and scholars. The book will make an important new contribution to at least two distinct fields: Diplomacy and Sport, as well as to those concerned with History, Politics, Sociology, and International Relations. The critical analysis the book provides explores the linkages across these fields, particularly in relation to Soft Power and Public Diplomacy, and is supported by a wide range of sources and methodologies. The book draws in a range of scholars across these different fields, and includes esteemed FIFA scholar Prof. Alan Tomlinson. Tomlinson addresses diplomacy within the world’s global game of Association Football, while other subjects include the rise of Mega Sport Events (MSE) as sites of diplomacy, new consideration of Chinese Ping-Pong Diplomacy prior to the 1970s, the importance of boycotts in sport – particularly in relation to newly explored dimensions of the boycotts of the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games. The place of non-state actors is explored throughout, be they individual or institutions they perform a crucial role as conduits of the transactions of sport and diplomacy Based on twentieth and twenty-first century evidence, the book acknowledges the antecedents from the ancient Olympics to the contemporary era and in its conclusions offers avenues for further study based on the future Sport and Diplomacy relationship. The book has strong international basis because it covers a broad range of countries, their diplomatic relationship with sport and is written by a truly transnational cast of authors. The intense media scrutiny on the Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup, and other international sports will also contribute to the global interest in this volume.

Abstract:
Success in youth sport is underpinned by a range of chronological age- and biological maturity status-related factors which affect performance in a sex- and sport-specific manner. Pubertal changes in body size, shape, composition, muscle metabolism, muscle strength, aerobic fitness, and anaerobic fitness strongly influence sport performance but biological clocks run at different rates. As selection and retention in youth sport is based on chronological age, competition is not always on a level playing field. Young athletes benefit from exercise training but there is no convincing evidence of the existence of a ‘maturation threshold’ below which the effects of training will be minimal or will not occur, or of ‘windows of opportunity’ during which training effects are enhanced. Participation in sport provides a positive environment for the promotion of personal development but evidence is accumulating that elite youth sport also presents risks to current and future health and well-being.

Abstract:
This monograph summarizes goal-setting theory as originally developed in 1990; it then updates the theory based on research findings subsequent to that time period. These new findings include the economic value of goal setting, the use of stretch goals, new analyses of commitment, goal determinants, multiple goals, learning goals, long-term goal effects, and team goals. We also summarize studies involving the application of goal setting to field such as creativity, negotiation, sports, health, aging, entrepreneurship, psychotherapy, education, self-development, and subconscious motivation. We point out potential problems and pitfalls in the use of goal setting and how to avoid them.

Vorderer, Peter, and Christoph Klimmt, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Entertainment Theory. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190072216.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This handbook provides a strong collection of communication- and psychology-based theories and models on media entertainment, which can be used as a knowledge resource for any academic and applied purpose. Its 41 chapters offer explanations of entertainment that audiences find in any kind of ‘old’ and ‘new’ media, from classic novels to VR video games, from fictional stories to mediated sports. As becomes clear in this handbook, the history of entertainment research teaches us not to forget that even if a field is converging to a seemingly dominant perspective, paradigm, and methodology, there are more views, alternative approaches, and different yet equally illuminative ways of thinking about the field. Young scholars may find here innovative ways to reconcile empirical-theoretical approaches to the experience of entertainment with such alternative views. And there are numerous entertainment-related phenomena in contemporary societies that still fit the „bread and circuses-“ perspective of the initial Frankfurt School thinking. So while the mission of the present handbook is to compile and advance current theories about media entertainment, scholars active or interested in the topic are invited to also consider the historic roots of the field and the great diversity it has featured over the past nearly 100 years. Many lessons can be learned from this history, and future innovations in entertainment theory may just as likely emerge from refining those approaches compiled in the present handbook as from building on neglected, forgotten, or marginalized streams of scholarship.

Abstract:
Ireland and Partition: Contexts and Consequences brings together multiple perspectives on this key and timely theme in Irish history, from the international dimension to its impact on social and economic questions, alongside fresh perspectives on the changing political positions adopted by Irish nationalists, Ulster Unionists, and British Conservatives. It examines the gestation of partition through to its implementation in 1921 as well as the many consequences that followed. The chapters, written by experts based in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain and the United States, include new scholars alongside contributions from authorities in their fields. Together, they consider partition from a variety of often overlooked angles, from its local impact on the ground through to its place in the post-1918 international order and diplomatic relations, its implications for political violence and security policy, and its consequences for sport and economics, through to its capacity to divide both nationalism and unionism from within. This book places the current questions about the future of partition, resulting from ‘Brexit’ and the centenary of partition in 2021, in a fuller perspective. It is relevant to those with an interest in Irish History and Irish Studies, as well as British History, European History and Peace Studies.

Rosenthal, Indira, Valerie Oosterveld, and Susana SáCouto, eds. Gender and International Criminal Law. Oxford University PressOxford, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198871583.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This book brings together leading feminist international criminal and humanitarian law academics and practitioners to examine the place of gender in international criminal law (ICL). It identifies and analyses prevailing misconceptions and narrow understandings of gender, before turning to a consideration of the impact a limited conceptualization has on accountability efforts and the protection of rights. It includes specific examples from national and international jurisprudence from which it is clear that the term ‘gender’ has not been well understood and that gender ‘blind spots’ prevail. These manifest starkly, for example, with respect to sexual violence against men and boys, gender-based crimes affecting children, and the gendered dimensions of slavery, forced marriage, and reproductive crimes. The authors consider how best to implement a deeper and more accurate understanding of gender in the practice of international criminal law by identifying possible responses, including embedding a sophisticated gender strategy into the practice of ICL, the gender-sensitive application of international human rights and international humanitarian law, and feminist reconstruction of judging in ICL. Other authors examine efforts to ensure that gender is expansively interpreted in ICL, for example in a new treaty on crimes against humanity, and that victims’ reparation awards are gender-inclusive. The objective of this book is to promote a more nuanced and expanded understanding of the concept of ‘gender’ in the field ICL in order to strengthen efforts for accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression.

Viafara Sandoval, Harold, Mónica Cristina Pérez Muñoz, and Sandra Parra Hinojosa. Polyphonies of the body in Professional Training. And the wave travels further. Editorial Bonaventuriana de la Universidad de San Buenaventura Cali, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21500/9789585415621.

Abstract:
"This book is an approach to the sphere of the body from different disciplinary perspectives. For this, a dialogue is necessary, not to unify the concept, but to have the possibility of meeting and moving around different fields of knowledge. This to give meaning to what has been done over time and structure a system of consensus, dissent, and networks in a discourse-practice that has been marginal in the local space. In this encounter, it can be observed that there is no attribute of the body that allows us to speak of it as a whole nor a nature that informs us of a purpose. The body is constructed and this construction refers to a use, a need, and an experience. But on many occasions, its construction has been left aside in some areas of training, without giving it the importance it deserves. I invite the readers to delight in this new wave, in which we can see views from perspectives such as sport, health, disability, education, and art. Winding, undulating movements that have been based on academic reflections, projects, and research by friends and colleagues who have joined these dialogues today and seek to unravel and decant the mysteries of the body, how they perceive it, assume it and it is constitutive of the subject."
