Abstract:
Fideism, or basing one’s religious belief on faith, is popular especially amongst modern Protestant Christians. For the fideist, religious belief-systems are not subject to rational evaluation, and faith as the act of belief forms the essence of truth and the ultimate criterion for embracing a religion. Critics of fideism say that epistemologically, a hierarchy of methods can be used to derive the truth, and each method gives us varying confidence levels. These methods include mathematics and logic, science, personal experience, history, expert testimony, inference and Faith. Among these, the critic says, pure faith in something is the least successful in getting at the truth. Radical fideists like Kierkegaard do not cite logical reasons for defending their belief that God exists. Personal reasons are instead offered for their decision to believe. In this thesis I seek to demonstrate that the radical fideism advocated by Kierkegaard constitutes good justification for belief in the Christian God. I will begin with a discussion on fideism and some of its proponents, followed by a discussion on the place of faith (as a non-rational belief in God’s existence) in religion. I will then appeal to Kierkegaard’s philosophy in defending my view that religious belief in God is a matter of faith and personal commitment, feeling and passion, and this is an inner process not grounded in arguments. References will be drawn from Kierkegaard’s themes of faith, subjectivity and inwardness. I conclude by saying that even if no objective grounds exist to justify our belief, Kierkegaard standpoint remains right in two ways: Firstly, the fideist rejection of the attempt to justify his belief through offering reasons for it is precisely what makes his decision to believe deeply meaningful in his life. Secondly, those who ‘try to judge faith by objective, critical reflection will go on forever that way, and will never reach the point of having faith and of being religious’. Abstract:
This dissertation is a study of the controversial literature of the eighteenth century, an examination of certain texts which offended against the religious convictions of the period. The discussion concentrates on four works: Pierre Bayle's Dictionnaire Historique et Critique (1696-1701), Bernard Mandeville's Fable of the Bees (1714-1724), Henry Dodwell junior's Christianity not founded on argument (1742) and David Hume's Dialogues concerning Natural Religion (1779). This dissertation seeks to establish why these texts were so disconcerting, subversive and fascinating to an eighteenth-century audience. These works were not straight-forward declarations of impiety: the authors themselves - with varying degrees of irony - proclaimed their innocence of any subversive design. And the contemporary response was not always a unanimous chorus of disapproval: it was a curious mixture of outraged denunciation, careful negotiation and - in some cases - unqualified praise. While some readers believed that Bayle et al were seeking to undermine the Christian religion, other readers insisted that they were defending its prerogatives in good faith. This dissertation examines how such contrasting interpretations were constructed from the textual evidence and will thus be a contribution to the study of reader-response in the period. The interpretative difference of opinion was due - at least in part - to the presence of incommensurable theological idioms in the period. Bayle, Mandeville and Dodwell employed religious languages which were unfamiliar to an Anglican audience. While some readers shared the necessary theological presuppositions, many contemporaries were simply baffled by Mandeville's Augustinian moralism, Bayle's use of scepticism and Dodwell's rigorous fideism. The eighteenth century was riven by outbreaks of theological controversy: it was a period in which the definitions of orthodox and heterodox opinions were peculiarly fluid and unstable, a period in which a religious consensus could not be taken for granted.

La diversité des formations adjectives et adverbiales étymologiquement apparentées à fides semblait ouvrir une voie nouvelle de recherche pour accéder à la substance sémantique de ce terme. L'introduction montre comment une certaine tradition remontant à l'enseignement des grammairiens anciens et en particulier à celui de servius avait fait négliger ce type d'étude. Une lecture plus attentive de toute la tradition amène à reconsidérer les conclusions généralement admises. La première partie présente un inventaire exhaustif du nombre des occurrences des formations étymologiquement apparentées à fides, des origines jusqu'aux premiers textes chrétiens. Les occurrences sont présentées en huit synchronies. Leur répartition entre les œuvres en prose et celles en vers est l'objet d'une étude statistique. Sont aussi répertoriés tous les emplois des degrés des adjectifs qui manifestent des différences sensibles. Dans la seconde partie, l'étude sémantique est menée de façon à dégager, à partir des emplois dans les textes, la substance sémantique des adjectifs et des adverbes telle qu'elle apparait chez les auteurs les plus anciens et telle qu'elle a évolué tout au long des périodes étudiées. Elle précise donc la spécificité de la substance sémantique de chacun des adjectifs et des adverbes et elle décrit comment, progressivement, dans certains types d'emplois (par métonymie, métaphore ou catachrèse), certains adjectifs ont pu avoir une substance sémantique si proche qu'elle a pu passer pour identique. Il apparait cependant clairement que c'est pour sa substance sémantique propre que les chrétiens ont retenu (in)fidelis. L'étude sémantique conduit à réexaminer les hypothèses étymologiques et en particulier celle d'A. Meillet. L'existence du couple credofides ne peut être justifiée par le skr. Sraddha- ni par conséquent la valeur religieuse héritée de fides. Fides peut être issu d'une ancienne forme d'instrumental singulier
The different adjective or adverbial forms of the etymological family of fides seemed to pave a new way of access to the semantical substance of this word. The introduction shows how a certain tradition dating back from the teaching of ancient grammarians and especially of servius had caused this kind of study to be ne lected. A more careful reading of the whole tradition leads to the reconsideration of the generally accepted conclusions. The first part provides an exhaustive list of the number of all the occurrences of the forms of the etymological family of fides, from the origins to the early Christian texts. The occurrences are classified into eight synchronies. Their distribution between prose and poetry is studied statistically. All the uses of the degrees of the adjectives, showing noticeable differences, are also catalogued here. In the second part, the semantical study allows revealing, from the uses in the texts, the semantical substance of the adjectives or adverbs, as it appears in the earliest authors and as it has evolved through all the studied periods. So it defines the specificity of the semantical substance of each adjective or adverb and it describes how gradually, in certain uses (by metonymy, metaphor or catachresis), some adjectives acquired a semantical substance so similar that it could seem identical. However it is obvious that the Christians have kept (in)fidelis for its own semantical substance. The semantical study leads up to re-examine the etymological hypotheses and especially that of A. Meillet. The skt. Sraddha- does not allow proving the existence of the couple credo - fides, nor consequently the inherited religious value of fides. A presente dissertação tem como objetivo mostrar que o ceticismo resultante do Livro I do Tratado da Natureza Humana não pode ser fundado na suposta descoberta, por parte de Hume, de uma oposição entre os princípios que considera fundamentais para a natureza humana. Isso porque a factualidade dessa oposição seria defectiva para a filosofia humeana, uma vez que solapa a distinção entre princípios universais e princípios variáveis, essencial para a distinção entre princípios que devem ser aceitos e que devem ser rejeitados; porque um ceticismo dessa natureza é próprio do fideísmo corrente na Renascença e na Modernidade; e porque a impossibilidade do conhecimento resultante dessa oposição acarretaria na eliminação do estímulo à filosofia. Para negar tal oposição, é preciso afirmar que Hume nega a distinção ontológica entre as qualidades primárias e secundárias, que é a sua raiz. Isso pode ser feito a partir da apreciação da Parte 2 do Livro I do Tratado da Natureza Humana. É também preciso mostrar a possibilidade da existência dos corpos, o que é feito a partir da análise de trechos da Parte 4 do Livro I. Isso feito, uma nova perspectiva sobre a filosofia humeana se apresenta concernindo à natureza do seu ceticismo – um que se constitui pela insegurança – e à relação entre a razão e os instintos naturais – uma relação harmônica, antes que conflituosa.
This work aims to show that the resulting skepticism of Book I of the Treatise of Human Nature cannot be founded on the alleged discovery, by Hume, of an opposition between the principles which he considers fundamentals to human nature. This because the factuality of this opposition would be defective for the Humean philosophy as it undermines the distinction between universal principles and changeable principles, essential to distinguish between those principles which must be accepted and those which must be rejected; because a skepticism of this nature is proper of the current Fideism in the Renaissance and Modernity; and because the impossibility of knowledge that is consequence of this opposition would lead to the removing of the stimulus to philosophy. To deny such opposition, we must affirm that Hume denies the ontological distinction between primary and secondary qualities, that is its root. This can be done from the consideration of Part 2 of Book I of the Treatise of Human Nature. It is also necessary to show the possibility of the existence of bodies, what is done by the analysis of excerpts of Part 4 of Book I. That done, a new perspective on the Humean philosophy about the nature of its skepticism – one that is constituted by insecurity – and about the relation between reason and natural instincts – a harmonic relation, rather than confrontational – is presented.

A number of theologians claim that the church has not tapped into the fullness of Vatican II’s teaching on the sensus fidelium. As an attempt to address that concern, this dissertation examines the teaching authority of the laity as a key element in the expression of the sensus fidelium in the church. It argues for a fuller realization of Vatican II’s emphasis on the laity’s participation in Christ’s prophetic office. It proposes a three-part lay hermeneutic (hermeneutic of everyday life, hermeneutic of desire, and hermeneutic of trust) as a relevant, authoritative framework for discerning the sensus fidelium, of which Filipino popular Catholicism is a living expression. This dissertation employs a method that is primarily critical, hermeneutical and practical. It is structured in two parts: the first two chapters establish the theological underpinnings of the study, while the last three chapters focus on the laity, their sense of the faith, their reception process, their lived faith expressed through popular Catholicism, and their participation in the prophetic office of Christ. Through an analysis of the laity’s sensus fidei as an integral dimension in the discernment of the sensus fidelium, this dissertation emphasizes that authority in the church derives from all its members and that the interpretation of faith is a process that invites the participation of all the baptized as sharers in Christ’s prophetic function. In such a church, not only the ordained, but the laity, equally belong to the guild of interpreters of God’s revelation. The laity possess a teaching authority that contributes significantly to the life of the church

Con il presente lavoro ci si pone l’obiettivo scientifico di dotare di una adeguata dogmatica giuridica quella complessa realtà che è costituita dal configurarsi delle relazioni interne al Collegio episcopale, avanzando anche nella comprensione dell’aspetto intrinsecamente comunitario dell’ufficio episcopale quale risultato del rapporto di unitaria successione all’ufficio apostolico di diritto divino. Leggendo l’appartenenza al Collegio di quei membri che lo compongono uti universi attraverso il fondamentale valore ecclesiologico che ha l’inserimento sacramentale di essi nel “simbolismo dei Dodici” (cap. I), si giunge a configurare la compagine di coloro che sono uniti nel ministero episcopale nei termini di “universitas collegialis personarum inaequali iure" (cap. III), appurando - appunto a partire dalla questione terminologica di “collegium” (cap. II) - come sia effettivamente possibile dar vita a riflessioni sempre più pregnanti sul contributo che il pensiero teologico fornisce ai fini della strutturazione anche giuridica dell’empiria interna al carattere normativo della Chiesa. Può risultare così più agevole individuare le relazioni tra quei nuclei di significato che hanno condotto, in ambito cattolico, sia ad una nuova messa a punto e valorizzazione (teorica e pratica) della dottrina della collegialità episcopale in seno al Concilio Vaticano II sia al sempre più vivace prospettarsi di interessanti orizzonti in sede di riflessione canonistica ed ecclesiologica attuale.
The present work has the scientific aim of endowing with an adequate juridical dogmatics the complex reality that is constituted by the configuration of the internal relations of the College of Bishops, advancing also in the understanding of the intrinsically communitarian aspect of the episcopal office as a result of the relationship of unitary succession to the apostolic office of divine law. By interpreting the belonging to the College of those members who make it up uti universi through the fundamental ecclesiological value of their sacramental insertion in the "symbolism of the Twelve" (chapter I), one arrives at configuring the group of those who are united in the episcopal ministry in terms of "universitas collegialis personarum inaequali iure" (chapter III), demonstrating - starting precisely from the terminological question of "collegium" (chapter II) - how it is possible to give rise to increasingly pregnant reflections on the contribution that theological thought provides for the purposes of structuring, also juridically, the empirical internal normative character of the Church. In this way, it will be easier to identify the relationships between those nuclei of meaning that have led, in the Catholic sphere, both to a new development and enhancement (theoretical and practical) of the doctrine of episcopal collegiality within the Second Vatican Council and to the increasingly lively prospect of interesting horizons in the current canonical and ecclesiological reflection.

Det här arbetet studerar med hjälp av en attitydundersökning förhållandet mellan anställdasoldater och Försvarsmakten i syfte att utveckla förståelsen för soldaters commitment till sinarbetsgivare. Frågeställningen lyder Hur ser soldaters relationer ut till arbetsgivarenFörsvarsmakten? Arbetets teoretiska grund hämtas i begreppet relationship commitment och närmare bestämtden del som benämns attitudinal commitment. Den begreppsdefinition som nyttjas bygger ihuvudsak på Meyer och Allens (1991) tre komponenter av relationship commitment, det villsäga affective commitment (känslomässig), continuance commitment (kalkylativ) ochnormative commitment (normativ). Begreppsdefinitionen inkluderar även åtta påverkansfaktorer som var och en ges en tydlig knytning till respektive komponent avrelationship commitment. Påverkansfaktorerna utgörs av personlig kompetens, deladevärderingar, förtroende, upplevelser, relationsfördelar, relationsavvecklingskostnader samtskyldigheter och tvingande miljö.Till skillnad från många tidigare studier görs här en tydlig koppling mellan påverkansfaktoreroch komponenter. Vidare studeras relationen mellan arbetstagare och arbetsgivare inomoffentlig sektor vilket även det är relativt ovanligt. Tidigare har framförallt relationer mellanorganisationer inom privat sektor eller olika former av nätverk studerats.Undersökningens resultat visar att soldaternas relation med Försvarsmakten framföralltbygger på en känslomässig grund där personlig kompetens och upplevelser samt deladevärderingar har störst betydelse. Därtill kan föras att även förtroende har viss betydelse förrelationen. Inom den kalkylativa komponenten spelar en förväntan om personlig utveckling enviss roll, men i övrigt har komponenten begränsat inflytande på relationen. I studienkonstateras också att det i princip inte finns någon normativ grund i soldaternas relation medFörsvarsmakten.
Using an attitude survey, this essay studies the relationship between employed soldiers and their employer the Swedish Armed Forces in order to develop an understanding of therelationship between these parties. The research question is: What do soldiers' relationships totheir employer, the Swedish Armed Forces, look like?The theoretical basis of the study is build on the theories of relationship commitment, andmore specifically the part that can be linked to attitudinal commitment. The conceptualdefinition used is mainly based on Meyer and Allen's (1991) three components of relationshipcommitment, namely affective commitment (emotional), continuance commitment(calculating) and normative commitment (normative). The concept definition also includeseight influencing factors, each given a clear linkage to the respective component ofrelationship commitment. The influencing factors are personal competence, shared values, trust, experiences, relationship benefits, relationship termination costs, obligations andimperative environment.Unlike many previous studies done in this area, a clear link between the influencing factorsand their respective components is defined. In addition, the survey covers the relationshipbetween workers and employers in the public sector which is also relatively rare. Previously,mainly relationships between organizations in the private sector or in various forms ofnetwork have been studied.The results of the survey show that soldiers' relationship with the Swedish Armed Forces arebased in particular on an emotional basis, where feelings of personal competence, desire forexperiences and shared values are most important. In addition, trust has some but lesssignificance for the relationship. Within the caculating component an expectation of personaldevelopment play a certain role but otherwise the component has limited influence on the relationship. In principle, there is no normative basis in the soldiers' relationship with theSwedish Armed Forces.Keywords:

Presenta la creación de una empresa productora de pastas secas hechas con granos andinos, la cual se encargara de la producción artesanal y comercialización de los productos bajo el contexto de una empresa de sociedad anónima cerrada. El proyecto se justifica por la tendencia creciente del consumidor peruano a buscar y preferir productos naturales, además a nivel de Latinoamérica el Perú es el segundo país consumidor de pastas de fideos. En cuanto a los resultados obtenidos, en el análisis estratégico se identificaron atributos que sugieren una situación muy bien aspectada en términos de la iniciativa propuesta, como son la poca oferta de productos alimenticios saludables a pesar de que hay una tendencia creciente en el consumo de este tipo de alimentos, nuestra propuesta de valor es un producto totalmente natural, hecho con granos andinos del Altiplano. This dissertation inquires into the necessity, process, and structure of the bishop's discernment of the local church's sensus fidelium. As an authentic source of saving knowledge of God such that its reception brings union with God and others, the sensus fidelium ought to be a source for episcopal teaching. In his reception of the sensus fidelium, the bishop continues to learn and to be transformed by the apostolic faith, and is in turn better able to teach the faith with authority. If the bishop's reception of the sensus fidelium is integral to his ability to teach the apostolic faith in an authoritative manner, then the orthopraxis of that reception is of great importance. One aspect of that orthopraxis is the bishop's discernment of the sensus fidelium. As a ministerial habitus, discernment has implications both for the bishop's personal transformation and for his ability to place his spirituality at the service of the apostolate. The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola and the structures of the Society of Jesus are employed as a comparative model of discernment. The Spiritual Exercises offers a way of viewing discernment as a virtue that develops one's capacity for both reception from and union with God and others. Discernment in the Society of Jesus is undertaken to foster unity of understanding and purpose at the service of the Society's apostolate. Structures promoting discernment and relating spirituality to authority provide insights into how discernment may be developed within the larger church. Chapter One indicates that the bishop's discernment must become a virtue, that is, it must both be continually undertaken and personally transformative of his own capacity to know and respond to the Holy Spirit. Further, it must take into account in a positive and constructive manner other sources of authority, or of knowing God, within the church's historical context. Chapter Two analyzes the virtues and structures currently considered normative for the bishop's ministry in the local church. While ecclesial documents encourage dialogue, spirituality, and various virtues to aid the bishop's ministry, they leave undeveloped a coherent description of the relationship between discernment and the bishop's spirituality and authority, and do not sufficiently address the bishop's formation by the sensus fidelium of the local church. In order to better realize the ideals offered by these documents and to more sufficiently conceive how the bishop comes to personally symbolize the local church, Chapter Three and Chapter Four present the spirituality of the Spiritual Exercises and structures of the Society of Jesus. Chapter Five then constructs a model of episcopal discernment in the context of communion ecclesiology and in light of the insights of the Jesuit tradition in order to demonstrate how elements of Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit institutional structures may either illuminate episcopal self-understanding and practice or be adapted to the advantage of dialogical discernment within the local church

Na região de São Fidélis, no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, ocorrem as unidades metaplutônicas Bela Joana e Angelim e as metassedimentares Catalunha, São Fidélis e Santo Eduardo, cujas idades prováveis são domédio ao final do Proterozóico. Todas as unidades estão estruturadas segundo um padrão de foliação SW-NE com mergulhos fortes. A associação charnockítica Bela Joana apresenta a configuração de um maciço lenticular e uma faixa estreita, separada do corpo principal por gnaisses migmatíticos. A unidade Bela Joana apresenta xenólitos de metamorfitos, representando restos de teto, e enclaves básicos, ambos relacionados à movimentação plutônica. Os eventos de deformação e metamorfismo que atuam posteriormente à formação das rochas das unidades Bela Joana e Angelim desenvolveram domínios deformacionais foliados e gnáissicos, relacionados às transformações metamórficas associadas a processos de cisalhamento dúctil. A foliação (\'S IND.C\') da unidade Bela Joana está presente também nos xenólitos de metamorfitos e nos enclaves básicos, podendo ser atribuída á fase de deformação \'S IND.n+1\' dos tipos litológicos gnáissico-migmatíticos encaixantes. As relações de contato entre as unidades Bela Joana e Catalunha situam a fase de colocação de associação charnockítica como anterior à intensa migmatização regional. A associação charnockítica abrange gabro-noritos, enderbitos, charno-enderbitos e charnockitos, com predominância dos termos intermediários; gabro-noritos e leuco-noritos também são encontrados sob a forma de enclaves. Como minerais primários tem-se plagioclásio, ortopiroxênio, clinopiroxênio, granada, quartzo e K-feldspato. Geoquimicamente, a unidade apresenta feições de uma seqüência cogenética de diferenciação magmática, com afinidade cálcico-alcalina, e com características de granitóide de arco magmático. A associação charnockítica é enriquecida em elementos terras raras, sobretudo em terras raras leves ) relativamente às terras raras pesadas, apresentando anomalias negativas de Eu bem definidas na maior parte das amostras. O granitóide Angelim ocorre paralelamente à foliação regional, encaixando entre as unidades Santo Eduardo e São Fidélis, sendo que as zonas cataclásticas cortam o ortognaisse ou indicam uma movimentação tectônica nas áreas de contato entre essas unidades. O Angelim é composto por rochas de composições tonalítica-granodioríticas com termos graníticos mais restritos. Os principais minerais fêmicos interpretados como magmáticos são a granada almandina e a hornblenda pargasítica; a biotita em grande parte é derivada das transformações desses minerais. Geoquimicamente, o Angelim apresenta afinidade cálcico-alcalina e enriquecimento em elementos incompatíveis, principalmente Rb e terras raras totais. As unidades gnáissico-migmatíticas Catalunha, São Fidélis e Santo Eduardo estão dispostas em faixas contínuas, onde a foliação principal (\'S IND.n+1\') está relacionada às faixas de cisalhamento dúctil desenvolvidas na região. As características petrográficas e geoquímicas sugerem que essas unidades representem a migmatização de seqüências supracrustais originalmente dominadas por grauvaca-pelitos com vulcânicas-vulcanoclásticas félsica-intermediárias associadas. As determinações geotermométricas e geobarométricas mostram que as fases minerais das unidades metaplutônicas e metassedimentares reequilibraram-se quimicamente sob condições de P-T em torno de 720 ° C e 6 Kb, expressando o pico do metamorfismo durante o Ciclo Brasiliano na região. Essas condições de P-T são consistentes com as fácies anfibolito alto e granulito, dependendo da abundância e composição das fases fluidas, particularmente das razões C\'O IND.2\'/\'H IND.2\'O nas rochas.
In the São Fidélis region occur the metaplutonic Bela Joana and Angelim and the metasedimentary Catalunha, São Fidelis and Santo Eduardo units of probable Mid-late Proterozoic age. All these lithologies presents a steep dipping SW-NE region al foliation related to ductile shear zones. Both the Bela Joana and Angelim units have massive, foliated and gneissic domains .The Bela Joana charnockitic sequence has metasedimentary xenoliths, as well as basic enclaves, and its contact relations with the Catalunha unit indicate that its emplacement preceded the intense regional migmatization. The Bela Joana have gabbro-norite-enderbite-charno-enderbite- charnockitic compositions with predominances of intermediate terms; enclaves of gabbro- norites and leuco - norites occur as well. The Bela Joana sequence have plagioclase, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, garnet, quartz and K-feldspars as primary minerals. Geochemically, it has characteristics of a calc-alkaline cogenetic magmatic differentiated sequence, similar to subduction-related magmatic-arc granitoids. Regarding the Rare Earth elements, it shows fractionated patterns with enrichment of LREE and conspicuous negative Eu anomalies.The Angelim unit have tonalitic-granodioritic com positions with subordinated granitic types, corresponding to garnet-bearing hornblende-biotite granitoids. It also have calc-alkaline affinities being slightly more enriched in incompatible elements than the Bela Joana rocks.The Catalunha, São Fidélis and Santo Eduardo gneissic-migmatitic units have mineralogical- chemical features which suggest that these lithologies correspond to the anatexis of supracrustal sequences, originally dominated by greywacke-pelites with subordinated felsic-intermediate volcanic-volcanic-lastic material. Geothermometric and geobarometric determinations indicate that all these metaplutonic and metasedimentary units re-equilibrated under similar P-T conditions of about 720 QC and 6 KB which indicate the peak of the late Proterozoic Brasiliano cYcle regional metamorphism in the region. These P-T conditions are consistent with the upper-amphibolite and granulite facies, depending on the abundance and composition of the fluid phases, particularly of the \'CO IND.2\' / \'H IND.2 O\' ratio.

Sola Fides Sufficit is a 20-minute concerto for solo violin and ensemble. The 16-member ensemble consists of flute (doubling piccolo), oboe, clarinet in Bb (doubling bass clarinet), bassoon, horn in F, trumpet in C, trombone, tuba, percussion I (bass drum, brake drum, chimes, glockenspiel, two woodblocks), percussion II (snare drum, suspended cymbal, two toms, triangle, vibraphone), piano, two violins, viola, cello, and contrabass. Sola Fides Sufficit is based on my previous solo violin composition Et si sensus deficit… written for violinist Emily Rolka in 2010. Sola Fides Sufficit is an expansion, orchestration, and ultimately a recomposition of Et si sensus deficit… The melodic, harmonic, and formal material in Sola Fides Sufficit is largely based on my detailed musical analysis of the Pange Lingua, an unaccompanied 13th century plainchant written by St. Thomas Aquinas. The six-phrase melody is well-known in the Roman Catholic tradition for its performance at the end of Holy Thursday Mass. My analysis drove my compositional choices regarding two distinct objectives: One, to reflect the chant material in overt ways (e.g., use of neighbor figures) and two, to intentionally diverge from the original chant material, at times exploiting or exaggerating elements purposefully avoided in the chant (e.g., the tritone). I utilized both ways of decision-making to create drama, contrast, tension, and resolution in the piece. My large-scale formal goal was to create a cohesive composition utilizing particular surface and structural aspects of the Pange Lingua melody, while withholding presentation of the melody in its entirety until the climax (conclusion) of the work. Fragments from the chant were selected and employed in varying contexts depending on the formal goals of each section. Some fragments were presented with few changes, while others were transformed and developed through tonality, registration, timbre, and rhythm. My structural design was shaped by four words of character the composer Witold Lutoslawski perceived as essential in the creation of his large-scale works: Introduction, Narrative, Transitional and Concluding. Influenced by Lutoslawski’s psychological approach to listener perception as a compositional and analytical tool, Sola Fides Sufficit unfolds in four unbroken parts, each portraying primarily one of these four formal characters. Within each movement, these formal characters also occur on a smaller scale and give shape to each section. Only during the Narrative portions is the content the most important aspect perceived. During the Introductory, Transitional, and Concluding music, however, the role of the given section in the form is more important than the content.

We study the class of rings (associative and not necessarily commutative) such that any module is a homomorphic image of a direct sum of copies of any faithful and finitely generated module. Such rings are known as finitely Pseudo-Frobenius, FPF for short.
In the thesis FPF semiprime rings are characterized and a detailed study of their center is made. The core of the work studies the behaviour of FPF rings, and related classes of rings, under standard constructions: polynomial rings, power series rings, group rings and the rings of invariants by a group action.

This thesis investigates discursive identity creation used in the discourses of the governing populist political parties of Hungary and Poland, Fidesz and PiS. Considering the important role construction of social identities play in populism, this article argues that we need to enhance our understanding of how the Self and the Other is described and used in populist discourse. The analytical framework draws on earlier literature from the broader field of populism as well as from the fields of Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA), security studies and discourse analysis. In this thesis, the Self is conceptualised as Hungary and Poland, respectively, and the Other is conceptualised as the West. The findings show that Hungary and Poland are depicted as unique, strong and brave, and that “the people” share a common and distinctive culture. Meanwhile, the West is depicted as controlling and not to be trusted. The historical victimization of the nation in relation to the West is important, and used to legitimize the current relationship of the two. Moreover, both discourses use similar rhetoric strategies to defend these identities. However, the analysis also points to differences between the discourse used by PiS and the discourse used by Fidesz, where the latter is more extreme in its identity construction. Hungary is depicted as more unique and the identity of the West entail a more radical degree of Otherness carrying a more direct threat towards the existence of the Hungarian nation. In the discourse used by PiS, on the other hand, the West does pose a threat to the sovereignty of the Polish nation, but Poland simultaneously identifies with and wishes to integrate further with the West. Lastly, the findings show that the discursive identity construction of Hungary, Polandand the West is closely related to new legislation planned or implemented by the parties, and is hence not only a rhetoric device.

La presente tesis explica la situación actual de una planta de manufactura de fideos, que es parte de una compañía que se dedica a la manufactura de alimentos de consumo masivo. En el primer capítulo se presenta el marco teórico a aplicar, los cuales servirán como base para poder identificar la problemática del proceso de fabricación de fideos, así como las posibles soluciones. En el segundo capítulo se describe la situación actual de la compañía, específicamente en la planta de fabricación de fideos, donde se describe los procesos actuales, el planteamiento de la problemática y el análisis de las causas con las herramientas del diagrama de Ishikawa, análisis de árbol de falla, diagrama de Pareto, análisis de la capacidad del proceso e histogramas. En el tercer capítulo se plantea una propuesta para mejorar el proceso de producción de fideos mediante la aplicación de la herramienta de la manufactura Esbelta, con el fin de obtener una producción más eficiente y eficaz acorde a las exigencias de los clientes. Finalmente, en el cuarto capítulo, se presentan las conclusiones y recomendaciones para la propuesta de mejora del presente trabajo.
This thesis explains the current situation of a noodle manufacturing plant, which is part of a company that is dedicated to the manufacture of food for human consumption. In the first chapter the theoretical framework to be applied is presented, which will serve as a basis to identify the problems of the noodle manufacturing process, as well as the possible solutions. The second chapter describes the current situation of the company, specifically in the noodle manufacturing plant, where the current processes are described, the problematic approach and the analysis of the causes with the tools of the Ishikawa diagram, analysis of fault tree, Pareto diagram, process capacity analysis and histograms. In the third chapter a proposal is presented to improve the noodle production process through the application of the Lean manufacturing tool, to obtain a more efficient and effective production according to the customers' requirements. Finally, in the fourth chapter, the conclusions and recommendations for the improvement proposal of the present work are presented.

This study examines the rise of populism in Hungary and Poland through the Fidesz and Law and Justice (PiS) parties. As a relatively new terminology, the study begins by dissecting the various definitions of populism to establish a universal set of criteria to define the ideology. The majority of experts suggest that populist leaders campaign using a rhetoric of “us versus them” that encourages the population to feel that its general will is not being accurately represented. This strategy is particularly effective in Eastern European nations whose USSR roots makes them skeptical of globalization and paranoid of any loss of sovereignty. The study outlines three major underlying themes that led to the rise of populist parties in Poland and Hungary. First, the neoliberal reforms enacted during a post-communism shock therapy era created a level of poverty and wealth disparity that made citizens eager to return to the leftist economic platforms of Fidesz and PiS. Second, the newness of Poland and Hungary’s political system and continued communist elite system led to a level of corruption in the new government that left citizens with a growing distrust towards more traditional parties. Finally, both PiS and Fidesz capitalized off of the European migration crisis to stoke socially conservative fears and rally nativism. This study finds that these populist parties are successful due to their ability to capitalize off of the frustrations and fears of the common citizen who feels forgotten in a globalized society.

The focus of this thesis is demonstrating how the conceptual difference between secularity and religion is a foundational presupposition of the modern academic and political discourse. The thesis will focus on a critical analysis of Charles Taylor's philosophical work, particularly A Secular Age. Taylor's work is a telling example of how the current academic discourse about religion and secularity describes the two phenomena as radically different, two different “states of existence” that appeal to different contents of human consciousness. Taylor's philosophy has to rely on a fundamental presupposition of reality, so that he can describe the history of Western civilization as an unavoidable epistemic gain that has reached its peak with the development of the modern understanding of the world. Despite his attempt to develop a “positive” story to explain the development of secularity, Taylor has to rely on a moment of “loss” to make sense of his historical narrative. In the second part of thesis, I will present the argument that the concept of “faith” can be understood as a fundamental form of relation that connects individuals and societies to an ontology of the world. In pre-modern societies, the concept was understood as a normative source for the ethical and existential understanding of a society in both religious and nonreligious contexts, not just as a mystical connection to a transcendental source of truth. With modernity, the understanding of the concept has changed. However, this different understanding has not been followed by a disappearance of the attitude of “faith” in non-religious contexts. The “attitude of faith” can be understood as the fundamental connection a society/civilization establishes with its Weltaanschauung, its metaphysical world-view. More than being a “religious” connection to the transcendent, faith would be the form of connection through which human beings substantiate the ultimate nature of their claims.

En s’interrogeant sur une sentence de Quintus Mucius rapportée par Cicéron(Off. 3.70), cette étude entend montrer qu’au-delà de leur diversité et des évolutions qu’elles ont subies, les actions de bonne foi (iudicia bonae fidei)ont été depuis l’époque républicaine invariablement considérées par la jurisprudence romaine comme des actions fondées sur le ius civile, et non sur le pouvoir de juridiction du préteur, malgré le défaut de prévision législative qui les caractérise ; qu’elles furent initialement, pour l’essentiel d’entre elles,secrétées par le droit propre des citoyens romains, dans le cadre de rapports marqués par une certaine intimité de vie (societas vitae), et non du fait d’exigences liées au commerce avec les pérégrins. Corrélativement, la mention de la bonne foi dans leur formule (clause ex fide bona), loin de représenter le fondement d’un devoir moral ou de l’obligation juridique qu’elles protègent,représente un standard de jugement destiné à amplifier les pouvoirs du juge pour la résolution de ces contentieux rendus délicats par les liens d’affinité sociale fréquents entre les parties au litige. Actions of good faith (iudicia bonae fidei) have for long been suspected of being initially praetorian actions, which were probably for most of them created by the peregrine praetorship to enforce contracts passed by the strangers (peregrine), so that their material source is good faith (fides bona),expressed in their formula by the clause “ex fide bona”. Our research is an attempt to prove that :a) these actions were already considered as civilian actions in the later Republic, despite the lack of a statutory ground b)their initial scope was to protect typically Roman relationships; c)Thus, the clausulaex fide bona was a simple standard that enlarged the power of the judge and overlapped some of the strict rules of Roman civil procedure, as well as it took place in an euphemistic and diplomatic way of writing formulas, in order to respect the social affinity (societas vitae) between the parties

The subjects of the Doctoral Dissertation is the problem of disclosing information seen in a horizon of legal intercourse, genesis of this information, historical development and it’s implementation into practice. An obligation to disclose information seen in a horizon of legal intercourse is analyzed from the theoretical and practical points of view. This reflects upon the structure of thesis - in the first part theoretical questions linked with the obligation to disclose information, and in the other parts - peculiarities and problems of its practical implementation. In theoretical part of the work the genesis of the obligation to disclose information that links with legal intercourse of insurance, also the main theories and doctrines which interpret and predicate existing of the obligation to disclose information in the sphere of legal intercourse. An attention must be paid also to this fact that in theoretical part of the thesis the main attention is paid to analysis the research results of obligation to disclose information and being in other social sciences. Tai atsispindi ir darbo struktūroje – pirmoje dalyje analizuojami su pareigą atskleisti informaciją susiję teoriniai klausimai, o kitose praktinio realizavimo ypatumai bei problematika. The political parties Law and Justice (PiS) and Fidesz have over the years being on the tabloid for choosing different directions than other countries within the European union. With their Euroscepticism and rhetoric’s often criticizing the union for putting Europeans second before immigrants, the parties have become a well discussed topic around the continent. The rhetoric that has been used by the parties have been associated with nationalism and making different decisions than ruling parties around Europe, as an example preventing immigrants entering their countries during the refugee crisis of 2015. The question however is whether the parties are nationalistic as their critics say, and what other areas besides immigration that tells if the parties are nationalistic. Thus, this essay’s purpose is to analyze whether PiS and Fidesz are nationalistic parties. Using three concepts to analyze from; multiculturalism, citizenship and nation, this essay will show whether you can place PiS and Fidesz within ethnonationalism or cultural nationalism. The essay also contains charts, where the parties are placed within the two chosen nationalistic orientations.

Les guerres puniques ont longtemps été présentées comme la victoire de la civilisation contre la barbarie étant donné que les seules sources à en parler étaient romaines. En ce qui concerne la religion des Carthaginois, les Romains et les Grecs avant eux s'en sont fait une image plutôt négative. Les principaux traits retenus à propos de la religion des Puniques sont leur dévouement acharné à des rites sanguinaires (immolation massive d'enfants en bas âge) et à l'impudique Astarté, pratiques religieuses jugées barbares et scandaleuses. S'ajoutent aux manifestations lugubres de la piété punique un total manquement à la parole donnée et un irrespect sans précédent des serments et traités de guerre, connus communément à Rome sous l'appellation passée en proverbe : punica fides qui s'oppose à la fides, notion éminemment romaine. Toutefois les Grecs et les Romains ont bien dû, à maintes reprises, reconnaître que les Carthaginois pouvaient avoir des pratiques cultuelles tout à fait comparables aux leurs (prières, sacrifices, présents, fondation de sanctuaires dans les pays conquis...) et faire preuve d'une piété exemplaire. Ils ont constaté, en outre, que le panthéon punique était semblable aux leurs et que les Carthaginois étaient même capables de rendre hommage aux divinités étrangères. For a long time, Romans and Carthaginians lived side by side, and especially, in mutual conflict. The conflicting relationships that had been knitted, in the Mediterranean, between these two outstandingly powerful nations, this dense network with shady alliances, oppositions and hostilities, shaped the image of the Punics. We will endeavour to make out the way the Romans perceived the Carthaginians as it is not possible to know how the Carthaginians regarded themselves: The latter attempt is doomed to failure regarding the lack of Punic literary sources. It is mainly the Carthaginian religion that had marked the Romains: these people were considered as thoroughly irreligious. They were, on the whole, negatively pointed at. In fact, the Punic wars were, for long time, presented as the victory of civilization over barbarity since the only sources on the matter were Roman. Regarding the Carthaginians’ religion, the Romans, and the Greeks ever before them, had conceived it in a rather negative way

On la connait surtout par le role de suppleance qu'on lui attribue dans le bapteme des enfants incapables d'exprimer personnellement leur foi. Pourtant, loin de se limiter au bapteme des enfants, ce travail essaie de montrer de quelle maniere cette expression a pris place dans la litterature latine occidentale des treize premiers siecles : origine de l'expression, sa frequence, ses differentes utilisations, les sighifications qu'elle a prises au cours des siecles. Cette recherche fait ainsi ressortir, pour l'ensemble de la periode etudiee, les nombreux emplois de "fides ecclesiae" dans le sens de doctrine, d'orthodoxie ; elle indique a partir de quel moment et dans quel contexte "fides ecclesiae", synonyme de "fides aliena", apparait en relation avec le bapteme des enfants ; elle met en relief son role et son importance dans la theologie sacramentaire des douzieme et treizieme siecles, entre autres, l'usage qu'en font quelques grands maitres franciscains et dominicains du treizieme siecle
"fides ecclesiae" is a commonly used expression in the field of theology. It is mainly known as a substitute formula for those infants who are still unable to personally express their faith when being christened. However, far from being restricted to that single occasion, this work of mine attempts to show the way this expression was used in the latin literature written in the western world over the first thirteen centuries of our era - how the expression came into being, how often it was used and to what purpose, and the various meanings it acquired through the centuries. This research therefore brings into focus the whole period i studied through the various uses of "fides ecclesiae" in the sense of a doctrine and ortho- doxy. I have pointed out when and where the expression "fides ecclesiae" as an equivalent for "fides aliena" first appeared in relation with the christening of children. It emphasized the role and importance of this particular sacrament in the theology of the twelft and thirteenth centuries and, amongst other things, the use made of it by some great franciscan and dominican masters of the period

When developing products, reliability is an important factor that has to be considered. For safety critical systems it is important to know the probability that an item will perform a required function without failure under stated conditions for a stated period of time. The main goal of a reliability prediction analysis is to predict the rate at which the product of a system will fail. To perform this prediction there are a number of methodologies available.

This Master Thesis proposes a model-based approach for reliability prediction calculations based on the physics of failure and supported by analysis of test-data field returns and physical models provided by the FIDES methodology. FIDES based reliability models have been integrated into a model-based diagnosis environment for seamless integration with other safety assessment analysis.

The model-based diagnosis environment used in this thesis is model-based reasoner RODON developed by Uptime Solutions AB. Components that uses the FIDES methodology have been developed in RODON, where components can be combined to systems by drag and drop method. Usage profiles that are defined according to the FIDES methodology in RODON are not system specific, which makes them reusable in other systems. The developed library of components and usage profiles makes it easy to model complex systems and perform reliability predictions according to the FIDES methodology.

The justification by faith alone, in a context of fear, anguish and pastoral practices based on merit, of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, presented itself as a liberating enunciation. It gave new meaning to theological concepts. It showed the direction to a new way of Christian life, having salvation as its principal, not its objective. It formed, in this way, a foundation of a way to live: a justified way of living. A way that defines the integrity of being, that defines personal and communitarian acts. A way that, dogmatized over the years, imposed itself like a doctrine, to the detriment of vivid experience. The purpose of this research is to point out the relevance of justification by faith in the context of the 16th century, highlight aspects that formed the foundation of a new way of life of a person justified by faith, and confirm justification by faith as a foundation of a way of life that resists the hegemonic system of the market society of the 21st century.
A Justificação pela Fé no contexto da Reforma protestante do século XVI apresentou-se como um enunciado libertador das práticas pastorais meritórias. Ressignificou conceitos teológicos. Apontou para uma nova forma de vida cristã tendo a salvação como seu princípio, não seu objetivo. Formatou, desta forma, o fundamento de um modo de vida: o modo justificado de viver. Um modo que define a integralidade do ser. Modo que, dogmatizado com o passar dos anos, impôs-se como doutrina em detrimento da vivência. Esta pesquisa se propõe a apontar para a relevância da Justificação pela Fé no contexto do século XVI, assinalar aspectos que fundamentam e moldam o novo modo de vida da pessoa justificada pela fé e afirma a Justificação pela Fé como o fundamento de um modo de vida resistente ao sistema hegemônico da sociedade de mercado do século XXI.

In this thesis, I seek to contextualize the exclusivity of traditional marriage in the United States. I investigate the use of Christian beliefs applied to the American legal system, consequently becoming the foundation of American commonsense. I draw out the ways in which Augustinian thoughts on marriage have inadvertently been used to justify institutional favoritism toward heterosexual, monogamous couples. Through examining the Christian-American lens that shapes our understanding of traditional marriage, I argue that previous and current secular opposition to non-traditional marriage is fundamentally grounded in Christian faith, furthermore, American cultural understanding of marriage is unconsciously lined with Augustinian thought.

This thesis attempts to understand the reasons behind Hungary’s surge in populism in the years following the 2008 financial crisis. In particular it looks at the two major political parties in Hungary, Fidesz and Jobbik, and how they continue to maintain control over the Hungarian government despite the common theory that populist support deteriorates overtime. A key component of Populism is that it usually grows in times of crises. Particularly in Hungary I focus on the many crises that arose during Hungary’s turbulent history of occupation, especially their transition out of Communism. Along with the devastation caused by the 2008 financial crash. Hungary’s inability to completely transition into a full-fledged Democracy as well as the economic devastation they witnessed following 2008 has created an environment where Populism can thrive indefinitely.

Les miracles attribués à la virtus des espèces eucharistiques font l'objet de l'étude. Ils sont envisagés à partir du milieu du XIe siècle, moment où, dans le contexte de la réforme « grégorienne » et de la querelle bérengarienne, la présence substantielle est exprimée en des termes d'un réalisme sans précédent. Il s'agit de comprendre comment la production de récits miraculeux, qui prend alors son essor, construit un discours dont l'objet est non seulement de défendre le dogme nouvellement formulé, mais aussi une vision cléricale de l'ensemble de la société. L'exploration de cette problématique se fait par un parcours chronologique organisé en trois grands temps. Les récits de miracles articulent d'abord l'affirmation du réalisme eucharistique à l'exaltation du sacerdoce (années 1050-1170). Un tournant majeur est opéré entre les années 1170 et 1230. Alors que la documentation est plus prolixe et change de nature (naissance des recueils d'exempla), les récits, qui subissent très fortement l'influence cistercienne, doivent être replacés dans les enjeux du « tournant pastoral » qui s'opère sur fond de flambée des hérésies. Les deux derniers tiers du XIIIe siècle permettent d'envisager la place des miracles dans une prédication aux laïcs qui insiste, par leur biais, sur les manifestations publiques de la dévotion eucharistique comme marqueurs de l'identité chrétienne. La diffusion de la Fête-Dieu à l'ensemble de la Chrétienté, actée par l'insertion de la bulle Transiturus dans les Clémentines par Jean XXII (1317), constitue le terme de l'étude
The study focuses on miracles attributed to the eucharistic species. In the middle of the 11th century, the substantial presence of Christ in the eucharist is conceived in a realistic way, in the context of the Gregorian reform and the controversy raised by Berangar's theology. Miraculous tales produced at the time can be seen not only as a way to illustrate the eucharistic dogma, but also to express a clercical pattern for the whole society. The study follows the chronological order. At first, the narratives associate eucharistic realism with the enhancement of priesthood (1050-1170). Then, a major turn can be stressed between 1170 and 1230. At that time, especially in the Cistercian order, exempla are compiled in a new kind of collections. Miracles take place in the context of « pastoral turn » and the growth of the heresies, which they try to fight. In the two last thirds of the 13th century, the documentation allows us to analyze the place of these miracles in the preaching of the mendicant friars. These use miraculous tales in order to stress upon public manifestations of eucharistic piety as a way for the laity to express its Christian identity. The study ends with the progressive spreading of the new feast dedicated to the corpus Christi to the whole Christianity, which makes a decisive step in 1317, when pope John XXII includes the bull Transiturus in the Clementines
