Abstract:

Existing reinforced concrete (RC) structure can be strengthened upon the addition of externally bonded high-strength light-weight fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. An abundance of research over the last two decades has established the effectiveness of the externally bonded FRP via extensive experimental testing. Perhaps the most commonly occurring failure mode though is premature debonding of the FRP and debonding generally occurs at strains well below the strain capacity of the FRP. Debonding failures are undesirable as they are typically brittle and represent an under-utilisation of the FRP material. A straightforward means to prevent or at least delay debonding is by the addition of mechanical anchors, however, research to date on anchors is extremely limited. Of the various anchor concepts examined to date by researchers, this dissertation will focus on anchors made from FRP which are herein referred to as FRP anchors. The details and results of a program of research on the performance of FRP anchors in FRP-strengthened structures are presented in this dissertation. An extensive review of exiting literature helps establish knowledge gaps which serve to justify the need and the scope of the research reported herein. A novel bow-tie FRP anchor concept is then proposed and tested in smaller-scale single-shear FRP-to-concrete joint assemblages as well as larger-scale simply-supported FRP-strengthened RC slabs. The anchors are shown to increase the strength and slip capacity of the joints by up to 41 % and almost 600 %, respectively, in comparison with unanchored control joints. The anchors are then shown to increase the load and deflection capacity of slabs by 30 % and 110 %, respectively, above an unanchored control slab. In addition to strength, it is the ability of FRP anchors to introduce deformability into FRP-strengthened RC slabs which is particularly beneficial in order to produce safer structures. An analytical model is then developed which is based on a novel quad-linear moment-curvature response which can capture the complete load-deflection response of the FRP-strengthened slabs anchored with FRP anchors. The analytical modeling approach enables closed-form equations to be derived which can then be used by design engineers to relatively easily construct load-deflections responses and accurately predict member responses. Following the concluding comments for the project as a whole, future research topics of relevance are identified.

Abstract:

Existing reinforced concrete (RC) structural members such as beams, columns and joints can be strengthened and repaired with externally bonded high-strength and light-weight fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. The effectiveness of such strengthening can, however, be limited by premature debonding of the FRP at strains well below the strain capacity of the FRP. Such failures are also generally sudden and give rise to brittle member behavour. It is therefore important to prevent or even delay debonding failure in order for the FRP strengthening to be more effectively and efficiently used. Anchorage of the FRP strengthening is a logical solution and to date several different types of anchorage systems have been developed and tested. Anchors made from FRP, which are herein referred to as FRP anchors, are singled out for deeper inspection in this doctoral program of research. FRP anchors are an attractive form of anchorage as they are non-corrosive, relatively easily made by hand, and can be used in a variety of shaped RC elements ranging from beams to walls. There have been limited systematic studies though conducted on anchorage devices including FRP anchors. This knowledge gap forms the scope of the program of doctoral research reported herein. This dissertation is concerned with investigating the ability of FRP anchors to anchor externally bonded FRP in flexural strengthening applications. This is done by investigating the influence of FRP anchors on FRP-to-concrete bonded interfaces. Following a review of relevant literature, tests on FRP-to-concrete joints anchored with FRP anchors are reported as well as tests on FRP-strengthened RC slabs anchored with FRP anchors. The joint tests are used to investigate and understand the influence of key geometric and material properties such as, but not limited to, anchor type and position as well as plate length. The optimal arrangement of FRP anchors enabled significant increases in FRP plate strain utilisation to be achieved in the joints. Two modelling approaches based on regression analysis as well as partial interaction modelling are developed for the modelling of the joint tests. In the latter method of analysis, the complete debonding process is able to be simulated. The test and modelling results of the joint specimens are then used to design anchorage schemes for application to RC slabs strengthened in flexure with externally bonded FRP plates. The slab test results show the importance of strategic FRP anchor installation for enhancing the strength, ductility and deformability of FRP-strengthened RC slabs. Future research needs are finally presented in light of the outcomes of the experimental and analytical components of the research reported herein.

Abstract:

Timber has been used as a construction material in civil infrastructure throughout the world for several millennia and it is still a popular construction material to this day. Degradation of timber due to mechanical and environmental actions, as well as possible higher loads, can necessitate the need for strengthening or repair. The external bonding of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites offers a viable solution. A lack of understanding of the strength and behaviour of FRP-to-timber bonded interfaces is, however, hindering the safe and rational design of FRP strengthening measures for timber structures. The aim of this research project is to enhance understanding of the strength and behaviour of the bonded interface between timber and FRP. Important tangible outcomes of the project include the development of effective bonding systems as well as bond stress-slip models and bond strength model which quantify the bonded interface. In order to achieve these outcomes, an extensive experimental and analytical investigation is conducted. Tests are performed and reported on FRP-to-timber joints as well as FRP-strengthened beams. For the former, softwood (Pine), hardwood (Camphorwood) and glulam timber products have been tested. Variables include (i) externally bonded (EB) plates and near-surface mounted (NSM) plates, (ii) FRP plates formed in a wet lay-up procedure and pultrusion, (iii) bonded length of FRP, (iv) adhesive type, (v) adhesive thickness, (vi) timber species, and (vii) natural growth characteristics of the timber such as annual growth rings and knots. The concept of an effective bond length has been verified from the tests as well as effective procedures and materials for bonding FRP to softwoods and hardwoods. Models are also proposed and validated to quantify the bond strength and bond stress-slip relationships of the joint tests. The strengthening methods are then applied to glulam beams in order to observe the behaviour and strength of the bonding systems on a larger scale as well as on a system that bends. The bond strength model proposed from the joint tests is then assessed against the beam tests. Finally, conclusions are made on the entire program of study. Then, recommendations for future research are proposed.

Abstract:

Approximately fifty percent of the bridges in the United States are considered deficient. The deterioration of the concrete components is a leading cause of the problem. The deterioration of concrete bridge decks is due primarily to corrosion of the reinforcing steel in the concrete. A promising solution to the problem is the use of fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) as a replacement for reinforcing steel. The use of FRP as reinforcement has the following advantages of lightweight, high tensile strength, corrosion resistance, flexibility, and electromagnetic resistance. This paper looks at the use of FRP as reinforcement in concrete beams and compares the information from deflection measurements of different configurations. Also, a material cost comparison is made to determine the cost of using the FRP reinforcement over standard steel reinforcement. Concrete bridge deck systems are designed using steel and fiber-reinforced plastics and allowable stress and load resistance factor methods. Recommendations for further study and uses of FRP are made.

Abstract:

When implementing a bridge design proposal, it is common that several alternatives be considered, each with a different material of construction. Traditional building materials used for the construction of bridges have mainly been concrete, steel, timber or aluminium. With all these materials options, maintenance and replacement costs throughout the lifespan of a bridge make up for a large proportion of their total life cycle costs. Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) provides a new viable construction material, which can be implemented in bridge construction. This plastic based material has favourable material properties such a very high strength to weight ratio, high corrosion resistance and durability, as well as very low maintenance costs over its lifetime. In the feasibility analysis, a case study of an existing FRP deck bridge was taken and examined in three aspects: structural, economic and environmental. The bridge was also redesigned with a concrete deck solution, to provide a comparison to a conventional construction material. The results were found, in general to be favourable towards the FRP solution. From the structural analysis savings on deflection, support reactions and superstructure stresses were outputted. Economically, the composite material was found to have a substantial higher initial cost but much lower periodic maintenance costs than the concrete option. Finally the FRP bridge option displayed a lower construction time for the superstructure, at one third of that of concrete and an overall lower environmental impact, based on material production and the overall bridge construction process.

Abstract:

Increasing mechanical, economic and environmental requirements lead to multi material designs, wherein different classes of materials and manufacturing processes are merged to realize lightweight components with a high level of functional integration. Particularly in automotive industry the use of corresponding technologies will rise in the near future, as they can provide a significant contribution to weight reduction, energy conservation and therefore to the protection of natural resources. Especially the use of continuous fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) with thermoplastic matrices offers advantages for automotive components, due to its good specific characteristics and its suitability for mass production. In conjunction with isotropic materials, such as steel or aluminum, optimized lightweight structures can be produced, whose properties can be easily adapted to the given component requirements. The present paper deals with the development of innovative hybrid laminates with low residual stresses, made of thin-walled steel sheets and glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic (GFRP) prepregs layers. Thereby the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) was increased by an optimization of the FRP/metal-interfaces, carried out by examining the influence of several pre-operations like sanding, cleaning with organic solvents and applying primer systems. Based on these findings optimized compound samples were prepared and tested under realistic Cathodic dip paint conditions to determine the influence on the ILSS.
