Abstract:
ABSTRACT Cell morphogenesis requires dynamic reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton, a process that is tightly regulated by the Rho family of small GTPases. These GTPases act as molecular switches by shuttling between their inactive GDP-bound and active GTP-bound forms. Here we show that Nir2, a novel protein related to Drosophila retinal degeneration B (RdgB), markedly affects cell morphology through a novel Rho-inhibitory domain (Rid) which resides in its N-terminal region. Rid exhibits sequence homology with the Rho-binding site of formin-homology (FH) proteins and leads to an apparent loss of F-actin staining when ectopically expressed in mammalian cells. We also show that Rid inhibits Rho-mediated stress fiber formation and lysophosphatidic acid-induced RhoA activation. Biochemical studies demonstrated that Nir2, via Rid, preferentially binds to the inactive GDP-bound form of the small GTPase Rho. Microinjection of antibodies against Nir2 into neuronal cells markedly attenuates neurite extension, whereas overexpression of Nir2 in these cells attenuates Rho-mediated neurite retraction. These results implicate Nir2 as a novel regulator of the small GTPase Rho in actin cytoskeleton reorganization and cell morphogenesis.

Abstract:
This work aims at analysing the organization and the processes that exist in the Library Centres of the University of Pisa, from the point of view of an improvement in efficiency and quality of the service being supplied. Processes and activities will be analysed in order to understand their adequacy in comparison with the specifications fixed in advance, and with the satisfaction of patrons/users considered as those who use the final output that has been accomplished. The focus will be on the most critical processes being carried out in the “administrative secretariats” of Cost centres (in which the Libraries Department of the University is subdivided), starting point for every possible ameliorative action towards a better organization of the work and the activities. Supervisor of the thesis is Arianna Pitzalis, the academic year is 2005/2006.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the history of the Central Library of San Marcos University between the years 1923 and 1966. This period was chosen because 1923 is an important year in the history of the library, when under the direction of Pedro S. Zulen there is a significant improvement in services made to the public. Continuing forward 43 years, the history of the library is presented until the catastrophic earthquake of Oct.1966. This teluric movement required the transfer of students and teachers from the main building of the University (At that time in the Casona del Parque Universitario) to the new recently constructed "University City". Unfortunately, after the relocation the Library is unable to continue offering services because there was no physical space for it in the new campus. Ongoing development of the University library was then seriously limited by external and internal factors. The main external factor was the lack of autonomy of the university with regards to the ever changing government. In this sense, each 'golpe de estado' (coup), meant the resignation of the rector and in turn, the disruption of the institutional politics by a new administration. As to the internal factors, the Library lacked professional employees- librarians - with leadership abilities (with exceptions under the direction of Pedro Zulen and Jorge Basadre) and the absence of institutional support (including budget, salaries, physical space). The main conclusion that can be drawn is that the Central Library languished with a series of unfinished projects, resulting from the adverse institutional factors. Far from its users and in an urban environment deteriorating daily, the institution lost its role of central axis of librarian development of the university.

Abstract:
The research addresses a study of the information needs of high school students (day tomorrow) of the Technical College of Palermo. To achieve this, the theoretical concepts of the school library were approached from the UNESCO / IFLA manifestation for the school library, the possibility of characterizing the school library from history, function, services and others. Likewise, the state of the art of the publications of the studies of the school libraries in Colombia and Latin America was identified, thanks to the revision it has been possible to identify methodologies of this type of studies that served as reference of the investigation. Subsequently, from the theoretical framework of the user studies it was possible to model the methodology of the research. Finally, after the implementation of the users' study, an analysis of the results was carried out to characterize the information needs of high school students, based on this information, the conclusions and recommendations were presented where the proposals for the Strengthening of information services of the library using information and communication technologies (ICT).

Abstract:
The main aim of this study was to check the understanding about the concept and application of knowledge management for the federal public administration in Brasília, where investigated the sample of federal public organizations that have headquarters in this city and which work with knowledge management, in a moment which the posture and values of public organizations are strongly changed joined up to the economic and social Brazilian environment changes. In accordance with this purpose, a theoretical framework integrating Information Science, Brazilian public administration, and knowledge management theories was searched, since all the theoretical framework that holds up the knowledge management is based on the Information Science theories. The interview was the used technique. Starting from the collected data, this research analyzed the aspects related to the perception of the interviewed managers about the concept and application of knowledge management in their organizations, proving the strategic, human, and technological actions of this practice, as well as the difficulties and benefits arising from it. The results showed that knowledge management, in agreement with the interviewed public manager´s opinion, is not, as concept, a new idea, but is a new process, of which aim in the human cognition area is inserted, just start to be depth discussed for this administration area in this beginning of the XXI century. The results also showed that the analyzed organizations of the public area have considerables investments in technology. However, they showed that investments in human resources, the essence of knowledge management process, are still necessary.

Abstract:
The university in the Valle del Cauca and the rest of the world , libraries have a changing dynamic , with various proposals to modify the requirements of academic, technological and business world. These demands are guided by compliance with quality models seeking an adjustment to the environment and require a fixed results , in the case of ISO 9000, EFQM model FUNDIBEC , among others. Another way to respond to the new challenges of the university environment , has introduced new paradigms in the management of library services and resources based on technology models , the case of Integrated Learning Centers , Informations Commons and Learning Commons , all country proposals such as America, Canada, England and Spain , where the use of technology to support teaching and learning processes , research and production of knowledge, show alternatives. To achieve the construction of a specific guide to the creation and improvement of academic library services , the basis is the Service Delivery process area or SD of CMMI for Services ( CMMI -SVC ) , the Software Engineering Institute , a used model for software companies , using as base 5 maturity levels , where companies conducted a series of best practices proposed in 24 process areas , to have as a desired result, the scheduled maturity. This process area in particular, to find in it a complete service-oriented basis , responding to technology integration , human, physical and financial resources are chosen. The final result shows an adaptation of the Service Delivery process area of CMM- SVC , the context of university libraries , through a guide that houses the practices proposed by the original model and transforms them into activities using tools and methodologies area of librarianship , management and telecommunications . The application of the generic goals and generic practices are outside the scope and should be part of the institutionalization process , organized by each university.

Abstract:
This thesis is about chat services as part of electronic reference services in university libraries in Germany. Though the object of investigation is the chat service, the central question is if the introducition of this innovative service can be seen as an example for the innovative ability of public administration in Germany in general. To answer this question, different aspects are adressed, e.g. the acceptance of employees for innovations or the extent of hierarchical structures in the decision making processes of the libraries. The findings are mainly based on interviews that have been carried out with the manangement of the libraries investigated. The conclusion of the thesis is that such a piece of work certainly cannot give a final answer to such a question, but that if all public instiutions in Germany would be as innovative as the libraries that have been under examination it would be possible to refer to the German public sector as "innovative". The problem is that it is very questionable if libraries with their special responsibilities and conditions can be representative for the public sector as a whole.
