Pels, Peter J. Magical Things: on Fetishes, Commodities, and Computers. Edited by Dan Hicks and Mary C. Beaudry. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199218714.013.0027.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the concepts of magical things followed by fetishes, commodities, and then the modern world of computers. When do things become magical is a vital question which this article tries to answer. This article discusses the magical elements associated with various objects that we come across in our daily lives. It also focuses on the problematic aspect associated with magic and fetish. The understanding reached by the impossibility of the fetish can be extended to our own everyday lives by zooming in on the magic of the commodity — to show that a certain fear of the object that behaves as a subject is both affirmed as well as denied in consumer society. The last part of this article shows through a reflection on the early popularization of the computer how the modern problematic of magical things plays out even in contexts where people embrace rather than fear the autonomously acting object.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 looks at how key stimuli and brain programming affect our own species’ aesthetics and determine which shapes, colors, and landscapes humans are attracted to and consider beautiful. Like other animals, people are predisposed to respond to certain key stimuli, which have been associated with an expectation of functionality, fitness, and increased well-being. In other words, the perception of beauty represents a strong internal indicator, which it pays to be guided by in order to gain various benefits. In this investigation, the chapter enters the micro-processes of artistic creation. It looks at the aesthetic effects that make up an artwork and at the understanding of why something captivates and fascinates people. The right embellishment can transform a trivial everyday object into an overwhelming power object—a kind of fetish that means the world to us and costs a fortune. How does something like this happen?

Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to the study of the cult of toses – fetishes in the traditional Khakass culture. Based on a wide range of sources, both published and for the fi rst time introduced into scientifi c circulation – archival materials and museum collections, the place and role of these cult objects in the spiritual life of Khakass were analyzed. The practice and technology of their manufacture were studied in detail. Sacral functions attributed to fetishes and rituals of their worship are considered. The connection of shamans with the cult of toses has been revealed. For the fi rst time, certain types of cult products have been artistically reconstructed. The book is addressed to specialists in the fi eld of history, ethnography, museology, local history and researchers of the traditional beliefs of the peoples of Siberia.
