Damiens, Antoine. LGBTQ Film Festivals. Amsterdam University Press B.V., 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9789048561575.

Abstract:
While scholars have theorized major film festivals, they have ignored smaller, ephemeral, events. In taking seriously minor European and North-American LGBTQ festivals which often only exist as traces within archival collections, this book revisits festival studies' methodological and theoretical apparatuses. As the first 'critique' of festival studies from within, LGBTQ Film Festivals argues that both festivals and queer film cultures are by definition ephemeral. The book is organized around two concepts: First, 'critical festival studies' examines the political project and disciplinary assumptions that structure festival research. Second, 'the festival as a method' pays attention to festivals' role as producers of knowledge: it argues that festivals are not mere objects of research but also actors already shaping academic, industrial, and popular cinematic knowledge. Drawing on the author's experience on the festival circuit, this book pays homage to the labour of queer organizers, critics, and scholars and opens up new avenues for festival research.

Hilder, Thomas R. Sámi Festivals and Indigenous Sovereignty. Edited by Fabian Holt and Antti-Ville Kärjä. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190603908.013.20.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter is a contribution to the literatures on Sámi cultural history, Nordic postcolonial studies, and music festivals. Drawing inspiration from social theory, the chapter explores how the proliferation of festivals has helped in the formation of local and transnational Sámi publics in the Nordic region. It argues that festivals help foster a sense of transnational Sámi community and work toward cultural self-determination at three levels: the local, the Nordic, and the global. In showing how resistance to nation-states is performed and how sovereignty is enabled in festivals, the chapter highlights the significance of Sámi culture for reconsidering broader political issues of transnationalism and globalization in the Nordic countries today. The main case studies are the Kautokeino Easter Festival and the Riddu Riđ đu Festival.

Abstract:
The key to the Jewish calendar is Nature and the pattern of sunrise and sunset. Temple procedures were scheduled into a day that began at dawn and for other purposes the day began at nightfall, such as the Sabbath. ‘The calendar and festivals’ looks at how the Jewish year is structured. The New Moon and changing seasons are celebrated. In biblical times, the New Moon was a festival of importance. Three of the most popular Bible-based festivals are known as ‘pilgrim’ or ‘foot’ festivals. Not all festivals are joyful. The New Year (Rosh Hashana) and Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) are serious occasions marking the beginning and end of the Ten Days of Penitence.
