Abstract:
This chapter offers a long-range historical perspective on the comparative secularization trajectories of Western Europe and the United States, built around the idea of ‘small differences’ which, over time, produce different patterns. The main categories of analysis include the separation of church and state, the democratization of Christianity and the role of free markets, the relationship between religion and political culture, the organizational characteristics of religious congregations, the contrasting roles played by social elites and a correspondingly different relationship between religion and popular culture, the differential importance of evangelical Christianity and the impact of immigration. The chapter finishes with a plea for more attention to the social historical dimensions of transatlantic comparison, including how churches were funded, the impact of fertility rates and generational transmission, and a preliminary look at current trends and future projections.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that the book fills a knowledge gap by conducting a systematic analysis of how the global gag rule affects women’s reproductive health across developing regions. The book extends the focus of the two previous econometric studies of the global gag rule’s impact in sub-Saharan Africa to include three additional developing regions: Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and South and Southeast Asia. This statistical analysis is grounded in a conceptual framework that models the complex factors that influence women’s decision-making about fertility. The chapter also describes the book’s multimethod approach to examining restrictions on women’s reproductive health through historical analysis, case studies, and analysis of aggregate data. The evolution of family-planning programs, the links between contraceptive access and fertility rates, the relationship between restrictive abortion laws and abortion rates, and the likelihood of other adverse effects are also introduced.

Abstract:
Scotland and England had broadly similar fertility and mortality trends, but Scotland’s net emigration far exceeded England’s at all periods, and in most decades was the highest in western Europe after Ireland. Analysis at local authority level shows net out-migration from almost every county in every decade until at least the 1990s, with high net outflows not just from highland and island areas but spread across most of rural Scotland and, much earlier than in England, even from the cities and largest towns. From the 1950s, Scotland had no local authorities which shared the significant net inflows found across large areas of the English south and the midlands. Graphical analysis shows major differences in crude birth and death rates in different parts of Scotland, with birth rates persistently high in the manufacturing areas of the Central Belt and low in the crofting and textile manufacturing counties.
