Abstract:
The article is devoted to the political views of F.D. Samarin, his conception of the political system in Russia before 1905, constitutional reforms of 1905–1906 and Stolypin’s reforms. The author demonstrates how Samarin tried to adopt the Slavophile doctrine to the situation of the beginning of the 20th century. At that he had to carry on polemics both with the opponents of the Slavophilism and its supporters. On the one hand, this fact stresses Slavophilism diversity and its inner heterogeneity. On the other hand, it shows the nature of the Slavophile doctrine itself that resembled more the historiographic approach to researching the past than a well-structured political conception. Giving meaningful political content to Slavophile ideas depended fully on every single representative of the Slavophile intellectual heritage.

Abstract:
The paper analyzes the material from two workbooks (1864–1867) that belonged to Feodor Dostoevsky (Russian State Archive of Literature and Art. Collection 212, inventory 1, storage units 4 and 5). The research was conducted in three main areas: selection of information for the letter style alphabet; comparative analysis of sources (manuscripts and publications of handwritten text) for the purpose of identifying and correcting errors in its reading; a review of calligraphy and graphics of Feodor Dostoevsky. The alphabet of letter styles allows to establish typical and atypical letter styles in the handwriting of Feodor Dostoevsky. This made it possible to compile a classification of letters, describe their features, and use this information in the study of difficult-to-read and previously undecipherable records. The latter may contain valuable information that allows to clarify the facts in the creative history of the works of Feodor Dostoevsky, biographical information, chronology of the creative process, and so on. The second area of research includes the comparative analysis of manuscript sources and their published versions — is of particular value for ascertaining the original author's text and eliminating the inaccuracies of research interpretations that often appear in the process of manuscript publishing. There is a direct connection between these areas of analysis — the letter style alphabet is a tool that allows to read the handwritten text more accurately and correct the mistakes of the publishers. The third direction, dedicated to the study of calligraphy, expands the range of tasks related to the study of graphics in the writer's texts and allows to draw preliminary conclusions about the nature of its function in the handwritten text. The scientific novelty of the work consists in the systematization of data on the writer's handwriting in manuscripts of the specified period, on the features of his creative work, and in correcting the errors made by publishers of handwritten materials and restoring the true meaning of the author's notes. The practical value of the work consists in collecting information about the writer's handwriting, which is relevant for the textual analysis of his works, publication of his texts, and use of the collected information for subsequent scientific work.

Abstract:
This article examines Feodor Chaliapin’s guest performances in Budapest. The famous singer visited Hungary altogether eight times over ten years, playing the roles of Mephisto (Faust), Basilio (The Barber of Seville), and Don Quixote in the opera, as well as giving individual concerts. His performances were considered the most outstanding events during the opera and theatre season, taking place before full houses, the boxes being filled with representatives of the Hungarian elite, political actors, businessmen, writers, and actors. The Hungarian press followed Сhaliapin everywhere, correspondents tried to inform readers about each and every moment of his stay in Hungary, and he obliged journalists — that problematic group — with great patience and professionalism by never declining an interview. Prestigious critics and musicologists (including Aladár Tóth, Emil Haraszti, and Dezső Szomory) wrote laudatory commentaries on Сhaliapin’s performances on the pages of Hungarian journals and newspapers. They all praised his talent, creative power, amazing bass, and charm as well as his ability to win the hearts of the audience from the very first moment. Hungarian people regarded Сhaliapin not only as the king of the opera, but also as the embodiment of Russia and Russian culture. Сhaliapin used his tournees to Budapest to get acquainted with the Hungarian capital; he visited the most famous sights of the city (he especially loved walking on the banks of the Danube) and he enjoyed spending his time eating out in restaurants and bars while listening to Hungarian gypsy music. Journal articles enable us to reconstruct this somewhat forgotten episode in Russian-Hungarian cultural relations.

Abstract:
The author of the article undertakes reconstructing the origin of the literary myth of Feodor, the Bishop of Rostov, that symbolized the first attempt in the 12th century to establish in North-Eastern Russia (“Rus’”) the archdiocese that was independent of Kiev in the context of Yu.F. Samarin’s historiosophic views. The author believes that this literary myth was created by the Bishop of Suzdal Dionysius. It was entered into the Laurentian Codex as part of the struggle against Archimandrite Mikhail (“Mitaya”) who was one of the candidates to become Moscow Metropolite after the death of Saint Alexius and was supported by Dmitry Donskoy. In connection with the story of Bishop Feodor the author also analyzes ancient Russian disputes on fasting that is viewed by the prevailing historiographic paradigm as important marker of dual faith that allegedly existed in Russia. The author proves the Orthodox character of the views of the Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky. According to the author Samarin’s statements on the absence in ancient Russia of heathenry serious resistance against Christianity are still relevant.

Full text
Abstract:
At the core of this paper is a discussion of unpublished progymnasmata (in Greek & Latin) elaborated by a number of Sophronius Leichoudes’ first students. These texts are preserved in three codices from the National Library of Russia. They were dedicated to elaboration of the whole range of the late antique rhetorical exercises such as ethopoeia, encomium, psogos (invective), chreia, commonplace, refutation and confirmation. No manuscripts have revealed examples of the exercises in fable, comparison, ecphrasis, thesis, introduction of a law. However, these progymnasmata, except the latter, were studied in abbreviated form within the preserved exercises. The topics of the pieces proposed by Sophronios are mostly of Christian character, such as a lament of Joseph, Judas’ betrayal, praises of Christmas, saints and martyrs, theological debates and many more. The information preserved on their scholia makes us possible to identify the authors’ names (Nikolay Semeonov Golovin, Aleksey Kirillov, Feodor Polikarpov and Feodor Gerasimov, Fedot Ageev, Iosif Afanas’ev, Peotr Postnikov, Paladiy Rogov, Greeks Anastasios and hierodeacon Dionysios) as well as to specify the essential elements of each exercise to be performed. Based on these materials, we can conclude that Sophronios conveyed to his students the best elements of both Byzantine and Jesuit rhetorical training, in this way the Leichoudian method of instruction corresponds in general to that of contemporary Greek schools.

Abstract:
The State Tyutchev memorial estate «Mouranovo» is connected with the names of the two famous poets Eugeny Bo-ratynsky (1800-44) and Feodor Tyutchev (1803-73). The founder of the fist museum exposition was a grandson of the poet Tyutchev - Nickolay Tyutchev (1876-1949). The exposition created by him includes different pieces: family portraits, rare books and pieces of art, samples of rare Russian and European porcelain, autographs. Then after his death the head of the museum became his nephew, great grandson of the poet Feodor Tyutchev - drill Pigarev (1911-84), PhD. He was a philologist, literary critic and researcher, one of the best specialists in Tyutchev studies. The article is dedicated to N. Tyutchev and С Pigarev, their life and activity as directors of the Memorial estate and it highlights a lot of extracts from visitors´ memoirs on meetings and work together with these two successors of the country estate. Nikolay Tyutchev was a famous expert in art among collectors of porcelain and rare pieces of art. He granted his own great collections to the museum, drill Pigarev and his donation to the museum and museum research issues were appreciated by scholars, literary critics and connoisseurs of Russian literature. The issues published at his time then became a great basement for further Tyutchev and Boratynsky studies as well as Russian poetry of the golden age.

The scholarly reception of the genre has hitherto paid little attention to its many incongruent stylistic features, including its striking Gothic motifs. Abstract:
This article reviews the known facts on the work and concepts of Russian higher educational institutions of the 1650s-1700s. The author analyzes the polemics that unfolded in the XVII century and continues until today around higher education in Russia from Fyodor Rtishchev's School to Zaikonospassky Greek Schools created by Likhud brothers. It is noted that the idea of autonomous estate-inclusive university in Moscow, which was conceived by the Tsar Feodor III Alexeyevich and received privileges in the Grant Letter of 1682, was never brought to life. The author reveals the motives of resistance to introduction of regular education and recognition of rules of the rational science. It is demonstrated that breaking with the Russian traditional church rituals by Patriarch Nikon on the basis of false Greek scholarship caused doubts of the society on the utility of foreign regular science; and the desire of the devotees of Greek scholarship to prove that Latin education, unlike Greek, is harmful for the faith, nullified the attempt of Tsar Feodor III Alexeyevich to create a Moscow university for preparing secular and church personnel. Such struggle for the Academy resulted in the clash between rationalism of the enlighteners and authority of the church, which destroyed and suppressed the enlighteners, and discredited the church. In the XVII century, no Higher educational institutions were established in Russia; moreover, the Moscow academic staff was annihilated. In the context of the reforms of Peter the Great, the humanities education in Russia of the XVIII century was implemented Little Russian scholars, while natural scientific education – by Western scholars.

Abstract:
The paper explores the decoration of manuscripts in an early printed style of the ornamentation dominant during the second half of the 16th – the beginning of the 17th centuries by the example of the works of outstanding scribes and drawing-artists brothers Stephan, Feodor and Gavrila (nicknamed Ivan) Basovs. The author applied the element-structural method and identified the influence of the artworks of the European master Israel van Mekenem the Younger and the Moscow first printers on their art. The brothers Basovs created various examples of the ornamentation: marginal ornaments, headpieces, initial letters. The present study is focused on the artistic features of marginal ornaments. The author reveals various types of the ornamental compositions and highlights distinctive features of the brothers Basovs` art. The study identified that the author's interpretation of the individual motifs of the early printed style by Stephan Basov is most clearly expressed at the creation of the complex (multicomponent) compositions with a combination of the various plant elements. Feodor Basov created ornamentation that is distinguished by the artist's inexhaustible imagination, which manifested itself in a large variability in the combination of components (for example the author's forms of fruits and birds). The Gavrila Basovs' marginal ornaments are characterized not only by the use of color, but also by the variety of compositions, many of which were multi-tiered and framing the text. The author examined the individual style of each of the brothers Basovs at the creation of marginal ornaments in the early printed style and determined the share of author's originality in its interpretation.

Abstract:
The research of secretive collection of manuscripts sheds light upon the historical views, cultural interests, and life circumstances of Bogolep Adamov (the second half of the XVII century – January 13, 1727). The sources contain some information on the activity of the bishop in his new eparchy, created by the Tsar Feodor III Alexeyevich according to the plan of religious education of his subjects. The rest of the facts about Bogolep Adamov, from his last name and his life path in the Chudov Monastery and Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Moscow and St. Petersburg respectively, to his episcopal consecration on January 25, 1719, are known from his books and manuscripts. One of them, which in the author’s opinion is most personal, and thus especially valuable, was the subject of this research. From methodical perspective, the work indicates the norm that is advisable to observe in describing a manuscript of the XVII century. It is demonstrated how a consistent codicological analysis of the manuscript collection allows tracing the entire history of its creation, and which research methods, starting with textology, reveal its content. Having examines the reasoning of Bogolep Adamov, the author also gets familiar   with the booklore of that time. Considerable attention is given to the archeographic explorations that give an idea of the partially preserved library of the bishop, formed in the last quarter of the XVII – first quarter of the XVIII centuries. As a result of the conducted research, Bogolep appears as an educated, traditionally open-minded individual of his era, which began with the reforms of the Tsar Feodor III Alexeyevich and ended with the reforms of Peter the Great, whom in the twilight of his life, the bishop recalls with warmth.

Abstract:
The article considers novels The Life and Adventures of Tikhon Trostnikov (1843) by N. A. Nekrasov and Humiliated and Insulted (1861) by F. M. Dostoevsky as experimental works in which the authors sought to combine European and national traditions. The reference to biographical material, the use of the structural method allowed to discover the similarity in genre content of the works and the difference of ideological attitudes of the authors. Both novels were created as autobiographical works, adventurous and satiric, included elements of “natural essay”, but each of the authors sought to use national genre content: Nekrasov's is a folk drama, and Dostoevsky refers to the traditions of Old Russian calendar literature, a literary story that shows the verification of the Holy Scriptures. Nekrasov failed to create a complete work, largely due to the narrative form, in which in some cases the parody begins to appear. But Dostoevsky managed to bring the novel to a new level, especially in his last works The Raw Youth and The Brothers Karamazov. Performing the task of “restoring the lost man”, Dostoevsky turns to the church calendar, Gospel allusions and parable plot.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This paper aims at examining the first Don Quixote sound film The Adventures of Don Quixote, directed by G.W. Pabst in 1933, as well as the songs and musical themes that two great French composers, Ravel and Ibert composed for the Russian baritone Feodor Chaliapin, the protagonist of this first feature film. It was originally planned as a multilingual project for a European and a larger world audience (English, French and German) that might understand Don Quixote as a classic-cum-modernist cultural product of the incipient technological era. In an attempt to disentangle the complex sociohistorical, intellectual and economic forces at play in the crystallisation of a myth for modern times (20th century and beyond), I approach Pabst’s film version with recourse to the Frankfurt School’s valuable critique and insights on notions such as the aura, instrumental reason, myth, and the culture industry.

Abstract:
In Anna M. Louw’s novel Kroniek van Perdepoort the primal conflict between good and evil is an important constituent element. Well-known authors in world literature have been fascinated by this problem, and it is an enriching experience to bring together allusions and to investigate points of contact with authors such as Feodor Dostoyevsky, Thomas Mann. William Faulkner and Patrick White. In Kroniek van Perdepoort there is a meeting between Klaas Kamer and the devil. Similarities between this meeting and similar meetings in Dr Faustus (Thomas Mann) and The Brothers Karamazov (Dostoyevsky) are pointed out.Subsequently the portrayal of sin in Kroniek van Perdepoort is compared with Faulkner’s novels The Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom!, in which a similar theme is represented.Patrick White is also an author of religious literature to whom Anna M. Louw is attracted by her own admission. His novels. The solid Mandala and Riders in the Chariot are studied, and similarities with Kroniek van Perdepoort indicated.

Abstract:
Abstract The body of almost every Roman or Byzantine emperor has been lost. This piece draws attention to two skeletons, recovered from a Muslim türbe at Trabzon during World War I by the Russian excavator Feodor Uspensky. Using local oral tradition, Uspensky identified the two bodies he recovered as the Byzantine emperor of Trebizond Alexios IV (1417-1429) and a local Turkish hero Hoşoğlan. Since Uspensky, his identifications have not been challenged nor scientifically examined. This paper argues that Uspensky did not recover just one but two imperial skeletons. It first dissects his identifications, showing how competition for sacred space between Greeks and Turks in the Ottoman period led each community to identify the tomb’s occupants with foundational figures in their communities. After dissecting Uspensky’s identifications, this paper then makes the case that both occupants of this tomb were unidentified members of the Grand Komnenoi family, urging for scientific examination of what may be the only bones of a Byzantine emperor.

Abstract:
An overview related to opuses of Feodor Sologub, a symbolist writer, who is very popular in Russia as well as over the world, is made in this paper. The paper’s main task is a study of Christmas story specificity. Two histories of two personages as parallel narrative structures are considered. A close-up view of fable features related to Sologub´s prose are shown. In this story reflections about Christmas miracle are combined with analysis related to sincere and spiritual orders of central personages. The methodological connection between symbolism and classicism is established in this paper. This feature of Russian symbolism is noted for the first time in literary criticism. In the center of paper author’s attention is an originality of a symbolist meta- phor which is considered not only as tracks but also as a communication element between heroes of the story.

Abstract:
The author explains the influence exerted by the novel Don Quixote in Russian symbolism and, particularly, how the image of Dulcinea crosses practically all the work of the major symbolist Feodor Sologub. Taking into consideration the impact caused by the idealist vision of the Cervantes's character in Romanticism, it is understandable that this attracted attention of symbolists or "Neo-Romantics. For that reason, the feminine ideal of Sofia of Vladimir Soloviov, understood as philosophic fundamental of the Russian symbolism, corresponds perfectly with the myth of Dulcinea. Although not mentioning Dulcinea, Sologub shows in his stories how the imperfect of the World kills the pristine beauty. A series of essays, articles and dramas culminate in the symbology of the book The Created Legend ("Tvorimaya leguenda"), where Sologub shows his fundamental idea: the transformation of life through the creator dream. Starting with the Quixote's idealization of Dulcinea, Sologub recreates a World that does not exist but which must exist, that is, Sologub does not offer a rereading of the Quixote, but the novel of Cervantes helps him to elaborate his own artistic creed.
