Redgrave, Kim. "All happy families are not alike : a feminist Aristotelian perspective on the good family." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2014. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/993/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, the claim that a flourishing family life should be characterised as a social practice, according to Alasdair MacIntyre’s definition of a practice, is defended. Furthermore, it is argued that the social practice of making and sustaining family life pursues certain goods, the achievement of which are constitutive of the family’s flourishing. The argument proceeds through the following stages. In the first part I focus on the Aristotelian premises of the argument and set out MacIntyre’s theoretical framework. I then apply this framework of the relationship between practices and institutions and internal and external goods to the family. In the second part I explore three important contemporary moral theories and how they address what a flourishing family life involves. In doing so, I look at how the Aristotelian approach adopted in this thesis compares to these approaches. The three approaches explored are contemporary liberalism (in particular liberal perfectionism), liberal feminism and feminist care ethics. At the end of this part of the thesis I argue that a synthesis of the Aristotelian framework and the particular insights of care ethics will provide a richer view of what a flourishing family life involves. In the final part of the thesis I provide an outline of some of the goods internal to the practice of life and the different activities and relationships which are constitutive of these goods. I then go on to suggest how families often fail to flourish as a result of the pursuit of external goods as ends in themselves or due to a lack of external goods. The conclusion of this thesis and its original contribution to knowledge is twofold: firstly, that MacIntyre’s contemporary Aristotelianism in combination with the insights of care ethics provides the tools with which we can identify the goods that contribute to and constitute familial flourishing. Secondly, that in order to identify the barriers to flourishing that families encounter, we must first understand what the goods internal and external to the practice are. We must then ensure that the institutions designed to sustain the family subordinate the goods external to family life to the internal goods, which only family members themselves can achieve through co-operative activity with each other.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine answers to several research questions: 1.) What do pre-service teachers know about feminist pedagogy or teaching in ways that are culturally responsive? 2.) In what ways are pre-service teachers prepared to use feminist pedagogy? 3.) How is a lesson constructed utilizing a feminist curriculum? All participating pre-service Art Education students completed a Survey of Art History, a questionnaire of their background in Art History, a questionnaire on their ideas of feminist pedagogy, and completed a group brainstorming of lesson plans. Data was analyzed from student responses. Results support the need for teaching more feminist content and pedagogy. Recommendations are made for further research.

Szucs, Eszter. "Space for Girls: Possibilities of Feminist Agency and Political Engagement on the Internet." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/wsi_theses/18.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the teen-targeted website gURL.com, which is committed to providing safe space for young girls to explore different aspects of girlhood. I primarily focus on girls’ comments and conversations posted on the message boards in order to trace how teens mediate and extend the borders of the popular conceptualizations of contemporary girlhood. I interpret young women's online activities within the discursive framework of the complex relation between Girl Culture and feminism. Without overvaluing the freedom of online environments, I assume that the relatively unregulated space of the Internet enables girls to step outside the dominant stereotypes and discover alternative modes of doing feminist activism. I argue that these new venues of political engagement are adequate ways of resistance within the specific era of postmodern global capitalism.

This paper maps themes (e.g. family, beauty, femininity, gender, blackness, representation) and artists from the Black arts and Feminist art movement who have been very influential when planning this senior art project. I specifically look at the works of Black feminist artists such as Betye Saar, Faith Ringgold, Carrie Mae Weems, Kara Walker, and Mickalene Thomas who navigate themes from both movements. In my project I have painted a series of interpretive acrylic portraits of close friends and family members, all adapted from photographs.

Beasley, Garland. "Judging the Rational and the Dead: Ann Radcliffe and Feminist Theology." VCU Scholars Compass, 2011. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/188.

Full text
Abstract:
“Judging the Rational and the Dead: Ann Radcliffe and Feminist Theology” argues Radcliffe’s first three novels, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne (1789), A Sicilian Romance (1790), and The Romance of the Forest (1791), show a progression of feminist theology informed by the late eighteenth-century British religious movement of Rational Dissent. The thesis attempts to complicate and extend Radcliffe scholarship by moving away from fractured critical discourses and into more cohesive readings of Radcliffe that include feminist and theological interpretations of her work. Of particular interest to the project are Radcliffe’s views on the circumscribed nature of women’s existence within British notions of church and state. The thesis does more than attempt to note Radcliffe’s objections to the circumscribed nature of women in British society; it also seeks to explore the potential solutions offered by a feminist theology that rejects establishment religious hierarchies in favor of a more Unitarian system.

CAPES
The following research is about the construction of subjectivity on female obesity in contemporary culture. The studied object are the online speech “pro-ana” and “pro-mia” posted on seventy blogs by internet users with eating disorders – obesity, bulimia and anorexia – compared to the opinion of ordinary women, personally interviewed. “Ana” and “Mia” are nicknames used on internet by bloggers that look forward to the beauty standards of models and actresses to refer to anorexia and bulimia. In this computer mediated communication the bloggers share information, experience and feelings, besides a strong ideal in favor of thinness and the adoption of practices associated to anorexia and bulimia as a lifestyle. The results presented here show how values, beliefs and prejudices gained a new dimension when mediated by computer and are incorporated into cyberculture.

Williams, Carolyn, of Western Sydney Nepean University, and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. "Identity, difference and the other : a genealogical investigation of lesbian feminism, the 'sex wars' and beyond." THESIS_FHSS_XXX_Williams_C.xml, 1996. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/187.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation into lesbian, and its primary focus is an analysis of the discursive conditions of the ?sex wars?: a moment in feminist politics in which contestations over sexuality became the central focus of feminist debate. In particular, the question is asked how it was possible for lesbian sadomasochism to be problematized as an ?anti-feminist? sexual practice. Lesbian feminism was committed to a modernist logic which compelled the production of ?regimes of truth?, which promoted a certain construction of ?lesbian? as a privileged form of feminist while problematizing lesbian sadomasochism. This problematization is traced to Enlightenment and humanist logics and precepts operative within feminist, lesbian feminist and gay liberationist discourses. The tendency of modernist discourses to produce singular, exclusionary identity categories and a hierarchical ordering of subject positions is also found to be present within the discourse of contemporary ?queer? theory. It is the contention of this thesis that the work of lesbian writers like Judith Butler, Shane Phelan and Teresa de Lauretis disrupts the modernist logic of the ?one? operative in both lesbian feminism and ?queer? theory and points to the theoretical and political work that needs to be done. The most urgent task facing current lesbian, gay and ?queer? theorists is the elaboration of an ethico-politics of difference, one that is attentive to the mutually constitutive multiple differences within and between subjects.

Gami, Sagarika. "Seeking Justice: Mobilizing the South Asian Community in the Face of Sexual Assault." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/187.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis looks at how the rule of law fails to achieve justice for Indian-American survivors of domestic violence in a multitude of ways, corresponding to class and religious positionality, as well as documentation status, and how the Indian community mobilizes in response to these failures by creating alternative modes of justice for survivors. Historically, these alternatives have taken form as direct service organizations, providing culturally and linguistically accessible services to survivors. I contend that these are helpful on an individual level, working to interrupt cycles of violence, but not at the collective level – stopping these cycles altogether. Given the systemic nature of sexual violence, working from transformative justice principles is an ideal modality of organizing, but not feasible given the structure of Indian-American communities today. In the interim between present post-violence work and future integration of transformative justice, I argue that pre-violence educational models are the most effective way to see tangible, generational, systemic change. Modes of resistance through educational initiatives aimed towards Indian youth ages ten to eighteen against rape culture will more effectively deter the cycles of intra-community violence from occurring, specifically when oriented from sites of religious worship and/or cultural centers – spaces that create a sense of Indian identity. These educational spaces currently do not exist as an intra-community effort, so I analyze various feminist pedagogies as well as an example of this work being done within other communities to extend these praxes back to the Indian community.

This study pursued the answer to the following central question: “How the effect of women empowerment policies promoted by the federal program of Territórios da Cidadania occurs on female representation in the 2008 elections and 2012?". The federal program Territories of Citizenship, Federal Decree 11,503 / 2008, has as its main goal, to promote economic development and to universalize basic citizenship programs. One of its most important pillars to achieve this goal is to produce actions to overcome gender inequalities. This federal program is organized on scale form because it has as performance basis a set of municipalities that have similarities on economic and environmental characteristics, cultural identity commonalities and social cohesion. On this sense, the research will focus its analysis on the municipal elections, especially in election financing networks and proportional gender representation of councilors chambers seeking to compare the electoral pleas of 2008 and 2012 to analyze the effectiveness of policies implemented there. For this, we used elections data available on TSE website structured on electoral database. The database was set up on network donations of both claims and the resulted statistics analysis highlighted the evidence of a change, occurred in these municipalities on both elections. The research undertaken shows that the position of women in electoral financing networks is essential for the achievement of success on the conquest of places in the municipal legislature. The central position in investments have been achieved by women who already have family translation in the political field as well as a wide sociability in local institutions, thus becoming, targets lenders. However, the great mass of women candidates, have a low profile on professional and educational qualifications, and little chance of attracting financial partnerships, hurting their chances of electoral success.

Forman, Sophia R. "Bringing Back Color, Bringing Back Emotion: Exploring Phenomenological Empathy in the Reclamation of the Female Nude in Painting." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/187.

Full text
Abstract:
At the nexus of the seemingly disparate art-theoretical topics of color and the female nude is a critical consideration of phenomenology in both one of its most basic senses—as the first-person experience of perceived phenomena—and as a larger philosophical position which, through its abstraction of perception to subject-object relationships, implicates the painted figure. Specifically, this paper conflates the phenomenology of color with the transcendental phenomenology of Edmund Husserl and Maurice Merleau-Ponty in investigating empathy. Structured as a dialectic, it establishes the most prominent views of both color and the female nude—the nude as a symbolic figure, color as perceptual experience—before delving into their various points of theoretical and art-historical intersection within these categories. This analysis ultimately forms the argument that color can be a powerful tool in reclaiming the female nude figure, stimulating emotive bodies that inspire empathetic viewers and intersubjective rather than objectifying, or abjectifying, dialogues.

Provost, Rebecca. ""Don't Tread On Me": Reading The Dialectical Nature of Laura Linney's On Screen Performance Process." Scholarly Repository, 2008. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_theses/180.

Full text
Abstract:
Laura Linney has an extensive education and experience in performance, which has influenced her to create a well-defined methodology when she approaches new roles. She uses a dialectical approach to performance. This approach has two parts as she outlined in a personal interview: phase one is her research, education, understanding of the script, and previous experiences working together to create a character, while phase two is her release of control over the character and the opportunity for the text (film or otherwise) and role to take on their own distinct personalities. This means that Linney eventually gives up agency over her characters in order for them to be effective and successful in the whole of a film. In effect, her characters are created by numerous influences within and outside her range of control. My intentions in this article are to prove that this dialectical methodology is prominent within all aspects of Laura Linney?s performances. In fact, I suggest that her utilization of this technique is what makes her a dynamic, effective, and unique actress. The dialectical nature of her performance techniques can be observed most effectively in specific breakthrough moments within her films. These moments exist most prominently in Linney?s films that are rooted in close character analysis like You Can Count On Me, The Savages, and the HBO mini-series John Adams. Close textual analyses of these scenes show a dramatic hiatus from the standard performance that she has used to help build a character. They show distinct differences between characters, which reinforces my point that each role is not only mandated by Linney?s creative power over her acting, but also a complete release of this control. They highlight how Linney allows herself to be directed and molded to develop deep, complex characters that work organically within the greater text of the film.

Abstract:
This study examines U.S. newspaper representation of Muslim-Arab women post 9/11 with an aim of better understanding how women are portrayed in relation to religion, society, politics and the economy. Through a discourse analysis, I examined local articles from across the nation, in addition to international articles, that examine various aspects of Muslim-Arab women’s lives between 9/11/2001 and 9/11/2005. With the increasing focus on the Muslim world in general, and Muslim women in particular, it is necessary to determine how women are portrayed. Muslim-Arab women have increasingly been on the face covers of magazines and front pages of newspapers since 9/11 and all the events that followed; among the major topics covered were the war in Afghanistan, the U.S.-led Iraqi invasion, as well as the elections in both countries. This project aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the diverse stereotypes used by Western reporters to describe Muslim-Arab women, their appearance, status, roles, obligations, responsibilities and aspirations. The analysis also examines the journalistic practices that contribute to distortion and stereotyping.

Abstract:
Environmental Justice defines the environment as the spaces where we live, work, and play. The Environmental Justice (EJ) Movement has traditionally used this definition to organize against toxics in communities. However, within EJ work, prisons or policing have often not been centralized or discussed. This means that the approximately 2.2 million people in prison are excluded from the conversation and movement. Additionally, communities and activists are identifying police and prisons as toxics in their communities, but an analysis of policing and prisons is largely missing in EJ scholarship. This thesis explores the intersection between prisons, policing, and pollution. It outlines how prisons, policing, and pollution are connected and reveals why this intersection is critical to understand in Environmental Justice (EJ) scholarship and organizing. Based on interviews with formerly incarcerated individuals in San Antonio, Texas, and a case study of the Mira Loma Women’s Detention Center in the Antelope Valley of California, this thesis expands the realm of EJ work to include and center the spaces of prisons and policing and complicates the definition of toxicity as it has been traditionally used and organized against in the EJ movement. I argue that policing and imprisonment are toxic systems to our communities and contradict and prevent the development of safe and sustainable communities. Thus, understanding prisons and policing as toxic to both people and to the environment, we should move toward abolishing these toxic systems and building alternatives to them. To this end, or rather, to this new beginning, [prison-industrial-complex] abolition should be explored as a framework within EJ to push us to fundamentally reconsider our ideas of justice, to better and differently approach the practice of making environmental justice available for all because abolition is not only about dismantling, but it is largely about building more just, safer, and more sustainable communities. This thesis brings abolition and EJ discourses together to assess the potential for coalition building between abolitionists and EJ activists to work toward a common goal of building safe, sustainable, and more just communities for everybody. I conclude that abolition should be embraced as a framework within EJ to liberate our carceral landscape and to imagine, and subsequently, create a new environmental and social landscape.

Abstract:
L'étude qui suit comparera le féminisme d'Austen à celui de Mary Wollstonecraft, à partir de ses essais A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, A Vindication of the Rights of Men, ainsi que ses romans Mary et The Wrongs of Woman.

Abstract:
The Restoration and early eighteenth-century theaters of London formed an important mixed-gender rhetorical venue, which was acutely focused on the age-old “querrelle des femmes” (or woman question). The immediate popularity of the newly opened Restoration theaters, the new practice of casting actresses rather than actors in female roles, and the libertine social climate of London from 1660 to the early 1700s created a unique rhetorical situation in which women openly participated as speakers and audience members. Through a methodology combining feminist historiography, performance theory, Bitzer’s rhetorical situation, and Habermas’ notion of the public sphere, this dissertation reclaims the Restoration theatre as one of the earliest public, secular, mixed-gender rhetorical venues in the English-speaking world. London theater of the Restoration and the early eighteenth century presents a feminist kairos for rereading and revisioning the actress from object to subject, from passive receiver to deliverer of performative rhetoric. Overall, the attention given to issues of femaleness in the plays of this period exceeds that of preceding and subsequent periods. The novelty of the actresses, as well as disillusionment with the male-dominated government and system of patriarchy, were major contributing factors that led to the female focus on stage. This phenomenon of female rhetoric also reflects the charisma, elocutionary skill, and visual rhetoric of the best female performers of the period, including: Nell Gwyn, Mary Saunderson Betterton, Elizabeth Barry, Anne Bracegirdle, Susannah Mountfort Verbruggen, Anne Oldfield, and Lavinia Fenton, all of whom are discussed from a rhetorical perspective in this dissertation.

The recovery of eschatology as the motor and the center of Christian theology has its apex in the work of Jürgen Moltmann, Theology of Hope (1964). In Latin America, little was done about a re-elaboration of eschatology and its implications for systematic theology in a Latin American theological method. Among the few works we have the book of João Batista Libânio and Maria Clara Bingemer, Christian Eschatology (1985). Both authors address the theme of Christian hope from different perspectives. After describing systematically the eschatologies of these two authors, we seek to determine to what extent the focus of these authors contributes or not as a theoretical tool to read the world and to illuminate a praxis engaged with change and transformation of oppressive structures in society. In the end, it is about rethinking eschatology in its relevance to the daily life of people.

Abstract:
My dissertation explores the narrative of Aurora Bertrana (1892-1974), an unknown writer today, but a successful and recognized female author in Catalonia and Spain during the mid 20th century. The written work of Aurora Bertrana is almost never mentioned in manuals of literature. Relegated almost to absolute oblivion, her rich, intellectual writting has not received the attention it deserves. I have studied seventeen of Bertrana’s novels –practically her entire oeuvre– written in Catalan and Spanish, including the following excellent books that have escaped critical attention: Ariatea (1960), “El pomell de les violes” (mn.), L’inefable Philip (mn.), La aldea sin hombres (mn.), La madrecita de los cerdos (mn.), Entre dos silencis (1958), La ninfa d’argila (1959), Fracàs (1966) and La ciutat dels joves: reportatge fantasia (1971). I have analyzed her writing, published and unpublished, from a feminist approach, taking into account the intellectual history of Spain and Catalonia. Bertrana’s strong commitment to controversial, social issues reveals her association with the modern and noucentists Catalan trends of her time. Her novels also reveal a unique interest in Europe at war and in non-Western cultures and lifestyles that draws attention to the situation of women in different circumstances and cultural geographies. My research is therefore anchored on interpretive and theoretical parameters that intersect, with a consideration of gender, such as class-and-gender, war-and-gender and travel-and-gender. I have used the work of feminists such as Simone De Beauvoir, Shulamith Firestone, Jelke Boesten, Margaret and Patrice Higonnet, Michelle Zimbalist Rosaldo, and Julia Kristeva to help assess Bertrana’s engagement with gender and socio-political issues. This approach is particularly well suited for a writer like Aurora Bertrana, a Catalan and Republican intellectual woman forced into exiled during the Spanish Civil War and the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

Abstract:
In her day Louise Dupin (1706-1799) was a famous salon holder and a "feminist" author whose writings are still relatively unknown. It took a century and a half for her manuscripts – written by her secretary, a certain Jean-Jacques Rousseau – to leave the hands of her inheritors. Then, due to their geographical dispersion, they remained unpublished for a further sixty years. For the first time, readers can now consult a transcription of the historical and educational parts of her Ouvrage sur les femmes. We shall also explore the feminist part of her "Critique de l’Esprit des lois". The chatelaine of Chenonceau was in fact one of the first to risk a refutation of Montesquieu's work. Voltaire read it attentively. How did she articulate her feminist and political thought in her encounters with the great philosophers of her day? To what degree was her monarchism troubled by convictions whose keyword was equality? We would like to introduce readers to the balanced, erudite and pugnacious character of her historical, political and moral thinking

Abstract:
18th century female novelists enjoyed, in their time, strong and vibrant acclaim throughout Europe. Their work nonetheless did not become part of the literary heritage. It is important to analyse the circumstances and reasons for this exclusion. They irreverently question the codes and conventions of authorship, as well as fiction and women’s writing. This work explores the fate of some of these writers – Mme Riccoboni, Mme de Tencin, Mme d’Epinay – and their work, so as to understand the full extent of the collective projections that explain how they have been perceived.Hence, we need to go back on these novels which, maybe, we no longer know how to read. This is made possible by the notion of distance, incongruence or discrepancy. Through the play of different discourses, Mme de Tencin’s and Mme de Fontaines’ novels subvert the symbolic order of patriarchal society. Their novels set out the contours and specifics for the position of women. Yet, they tend to overly constrain the rules of fictional discourse.Irony, in its multiple shapes, is the discourse that allows to circumvent the discursive traps encountered in this study. In its diversity, irony is best suited to sustain – for the female characters of Mme de Souza, Mme Cottin or those in Mme de Charrière’s novels – the opening brought about by distance, the irreverence of questioning – true requirement for literature as well as for all that is feminine

Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of sex and death in contemporary gay male culture, particularly focusing on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS and “safe sex” practices, specifically bug-chasing. By analyzing relevant literature and public discourse the topic of bug-chasing, or intentional pursuit of HIV sero-conversion, is placed in appropriate context. The work of Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, and Leo Bersani is employed in order to frame bug-chasing as a means of radical sexual self-determination which attempts to transcend the bonds of the administered bourgeois self, and ultimately results in an act of will akin to Martin Heidegger’s being-towards-death.

Abstract:
The current manuscript presents the research made on the context of the first Clinical Psychology Master Program of Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, under the supervision of Professor Pedro Nobre (Phd). This thesis “The Role of Psychological, Organic and Relationship Factors on Male and Female Sexual Desire” is composed by two sections: a theoretical section – “Biopsychossocial Determinants of Sexual Desire: a Literature Review” – that makes a description about the several dimensions often implicated on sexual desire, and an empirical study – “Sexual Desire: Predictive Factors and Gender Issues”- that aims to test different hypotheses concerning the impact of the previous dimensions on male and female sexual desire, considering the differences that men and women present at this phase of sexual response. Besides the complexity of the concept of sexual desire, there is also a lack of knowledge regarding the etiological and maintenance factors of sexual desire problems. Therefore, it is relevant to understand the biopsychossocial dimensions under witch sexual desire is express by both genders. The present study showed the central role played by cognitive dimensions (specifically, dysfunctional sexual beliefs and automatic thoughts during sexual activity) once these factors were the best predictors of sexual desire, mediating the relationship between age or medical problems and desire. We also observed gender differences regarding levels of shame presented during sexual activity (men with low desire present significantly more shame when compared to men with high sexual desire, while women with low and high desire present similar levels of shame); Moreover, men and women showed significant differences concerning psychopathology (womem present more anxiety and somatization), and emotions during sexual activity (men present more worry, fear and shame; women present more anger and satisfaction). Data reflects the significant role of cognitive dimensions on sexual desire, and also the need to consider gender differences regarding male and female sexuality.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Num primeiro momento dá-se especial relevância à obra de Mary Astell, A Serious Proposal to the Ladies, for the Advancement of their true and greatest Interest (1694), e o seu impacte à época. Posteriormente, aborda-se o texto reivindicativo de Catharine Macaulay, Letters on Education with Observations on Religious and Metaphysical Subjects (1790), exemplo cabal do radicalismo da década de 90 desse século.
Abstract: The eighteenth-century represented a moment of intense debate in what concerns female education, the milestone of the “Custom Law” contest which had long perpetuated the inferiority of women, and had confined them to the private domestic sphere. Thus, the defence of the right to education must be understood in a broader context, i.e. the defence of the intellectual equality of genders. In this study it is our aim to analyse the female educational models throughout the eighteenth-century in England. Considering such a long period, that is, from the reign of the last Stuarts after the Restoration to its terminus, and acknowledging the French Revolution (1789) as a decisive historical turning-point, we will study the proposals of two authoresses that mirrored distinct patterns of the feminine educational model. The key-goal of such proposals consisted of the acknowledgement of the need for a better education, one that would enable women to acquire useful learning on every subject other than domestic expertise. Our study begins with the analysis of A Serious Proposal to the Ladies, for the Advancement of their true and greatest Interest (1694), by Mary Astell, and its impact at the time. We, then, proceed to the analysis of Catharine Macaulay’s vindicative writings, Letters on Education with Observations on Religious and Metaphysical Subjects (1790), a perfect example of the radicalism of the 1790s. Our argument is that the political turmoil and unrest experienced by both writers, although in different historical moments, pave the way for women to reassess and redefine their roles. Also, despite the fact that these two authoresses can be easily labelled as ideological opposites, a more thorough approach of their legacies will reveal their complementarity, and illustrate their common concern regarding female education and the roles of women in the eighteenth-century.
