Abstract:
This chapter examines the contemporary costume film's unique interrelationship of femininity and privacy by focusing on how the historical constraints of privacy force the post-feminist heroine to make herself anew as a feminine subject. It uses the two poles of privacy and publicness to organize relationships between gender, feeling, time, aesthetics, and identity, worked through and re-envisioned by costume films for present-day viewers. By these means, the values of privacy and publicness are recalibrated to accommodate a mutable femininity that uses aesthetics and feeling as creative methods of adaptation. The heroine's process of identity construction consists of tests, experiments, and play with self-presentation to find and utilize the sanctioned meanings and covert privileges afforded by femininity. In reassembling elements of gender and galvanizing their force to new ends, spaces for covert resistance and pressure-release emerge. This course is one of “tactical aesthetics,” or the deployment of style to access power which makes use of gendered acts, expressions, dress, and etiquette to design new advantages. To explore this concept, the chapter analyzes two films, Elizabeth (1997) and Marie Antoinette (2006), as divergent visions of femininity.

Abstract:
Femininity resides at the heart of feminist debates regarding sex, gender and sexuality. As such, this chapter engages with a plethora of ways in which femininity has been defined, resisted, challenged and critiqued in contemporary short story narratives. Space, and a woman’s right to occupy space, provides the opening point of analysis through a reading of the narratives of Byatt and Tremain. The second section shifts to the notion of ‘behaving appropriately’ and examines the ways in which a selection of short stories depict and reflexively critique femininity in order to make visible and problematize societal expectations of women. Through these discussions, the female body emerges as an important motif and this is an image that will be drawn upon across the subsequent chapters. Finally, the discussion illuminates the ways in which femininity is often understood through association with a young and white female body. Subsequently, the closing section pays attention to narratives which foreground bodies “other” to this normative model and asks how this challenges the concept of femininity and, in turn, what this can tell us about contemporary feminisms.

Abstract:
The French have never been feminists. Of course, they’ve always loved women, but in the manner of Mediterranean peoples, which is the way ogres love little children—for their personal consumption. In the middle ages, the law denied French women the possession of land and separated them from the political scene. Later, the civil code denied them the same rights as men. It is also known with what stubbornness aging senators have consistently turned a deaf ear when the feminists claimed the vote and full rights of citizenship. Since the war of 1914–18, the situation has changed somewhat. Lack of manpower brought women into many fields to replace men, and they began to acquire economic independence. This war completed the evolution. In the Resistance, in concentration camps, women proved their right to participate in the reconstruction of their country on an equal basis as men. The civil code was modified in their favor and they were given the right to vote, to be elected; there are few jobs which are today forbidden them. It appears, therefore, that in France the old quarrel between feminists and antifeminists is settled, and there is no reason to return to it. But I ask myself if on the contrary it is not today that the question rises most ...
