Liesen, Laurette T. Feminist and Evolutionary Perspectives of Female-Female Competition, Status Seeking, and Social Network Formation. Edited by Maryanne L. Fisher. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199376377.013.8.

Full text
Abstract:
During the 1980s and 1990s, feminist evolutionists were instrumental in demonstrating that primate females, including girls and women, can be aggressive and seek status within their groups. Building on their insights, researchers from across disciplines have found that females use a variety of direct and indirect tactics as they pursue their reproductive success. To better understand women’s aggression and status seeking, one also must examine their social networks. Women must not only deal with the dynamics within their groups, they also must deal with pressures from other groups. Success in maintaining connections in one’s social network is vital for access to the various resources women need for their own reproductive success and to keep competitors in check. Overall, women’s social networks, while serving both supportive and competitive functions, profoundly impact on the reproductive future of women and especially the survival and future reproductive strategies of their children.

Adams, Marilyn McCord. Duns Scotus on the Female Gender. Edited by Adrian Thatcher. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199664153.013.009.

Full text
Abstract:
Scotus’ estimate of the female gender is shaped by his view that Mary is pre-eminent among merely human saints. Because Mary must be a real mother, he rejects the Aristotelian view that mothers are merely passive causes in reproduction. Christ’s most perfect saving act preserves Mary for immaculate conception, freedom from original sin, not just from birth but from the moment of foetal animation. Gender-justice is important in the marriage contract, even though God never dispenses from life-long indissoluble monogamy to allow polyandry or to permit women to divorce. The Franciscan distinction between dominion and use allows Mary and Joseph to be really married even though both vowed chastity. Gender-justice means that right reason would never permit merely human institutions from restricting ordination to men. The command must come from Christ himself.

Battin, Margaret P. Reproductive Control for Men. Edited by Leslie Francis. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199981878.013.16.

Full text
Abstract:
Although women have many contraceptive options—gels, foams, pills, patches, rings, injections, subdermal implants, intrauterine devices, most with low failure rates and good reversibility—men have only the condom, withdrawal, and vasectomy, all with high failure rates or no guarantee of reversibility. This leaves men with unequal options for reproductive control, yet they may be held responsible for support of a child whether they wanted to reproduce or not. Five types of modern male contraception are now under development: they all raise issues of effectiveness, acceptability, and risk, but would give males far greater reproductive control. However, the common “one’s enough” assumption—that it is sufficient if either the male or the female contracepts—means that reproductive control could shift from females to males. “One’s enough” must be challenged in favor of “double coverage,” highly effective long-acting reversible contraception as routine for both parties, the nearest guarantee of female–male equality in reproductive control.

Abstract:
Why did Mary Shelley create THE myth of modern science on June 16, 1816? This essay explores the autobiographical and scientific origins of Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, focusing on the ways in which the sexual division of labor in 19th Century Britain shaped the novel. Victor Frankenstein’s project – to have a baby without a woman (and thus eliminate the biological necessity for females) – points to the myriad ways in which the women in the novel, from Elizabeth Lavenza, Caroline Beaufort, and Justine Moritz to the female creature, are de-valued or destroyed. But in Mary’s feminist novel, Mother Nature fights back, killing Victor and transforming his creature into a monster. Shelley’s novel implicitly argues that human beings must co-operate with rather than dominate the natural order of reproduction.

Abstract:
Statin myopathy can occur at anytime during use. This chapter discusses an approach to diagnosis, and emphasizes management considerations, including awareness of statin metabolism by the cytochrome P-450 system. A statin must be discontinued in any patient with evidence of myopathy or myalgias. A muscle biopsy should be done in cases that do not improve clinically or by creatine kinase level. It is important to note that there are cases of apparent statin myopathy which transform into a chronic autoimmune inflammatory myopathy. Antibodies to hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase have recently been identified in the majority of patients with autoimmune statin myopathy and this test may give further weight to treat with immunotherapy.

Full text
Abstract:
Catherine Reyes-Housholder and Gwynn Thomas highlight the unexpected emergence of female presidents and presidential candidates in Latin American politics. They point out that theories explaining the election of female executives globally fail to account for the rise of female presidents in Latin America and argue that the transition to democracy, women’s increasing political experience, the rise of the left, and recent political party crises have provided new opportunities for women in the presidency. However, female presidents must continually manage gendered expectations created from men’s past dominance of presidential power. While they appear similarly as successful governing as male presidents, only Michelle Bachelet has made gender equality a central component of her agenda. Female presidents have not used their constitutional powers to enact many gender equality policies, but in certain circumstances, they have been more likely than men to appoint women to their cabinets. Female presidents also have had some positive consequences for women’s participation in politics.

Taiz, Lincoln, and Lee Taiz. Sex and the Single Cryptogam. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190490263.003.0017.

Full text
Abstract:
As Chapter 17 makes clear, the asexualist/sexualists controversy continued even as Johann Hedwig and Karl von Nägel demonstrated the existence of sex in cryptogams by discovering the Alternation of Generations (1782, 1784), hybridizers A. F. Wiegman and Carl Friedrich von Gaertner recieved prestigious prizes for their work, and Giovanni Battista Amici and Adolphe-Theodore Brongniart discovered—and confirmed—the pollen tube. Unconvinced, Matthias Jacob Schleiden, co-founder of the cell theory, insisted that ferns grow asexually from spores, and that spores, not seeds, are the primary units of propagation in seed plants also. He argued (1853) that the entire life-cycle of seed plants is based on duplicative cell divisions that produce seeds entirely by vegetative processes. Following the Aristotelian doctrine that the female parent provides the material substance of the embryo, he concluded pollen must be a female structure that reproduces vegetatively—thus making the case for a unisexual, plants-as-female model.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter interrogates the literary evidence from the perspective of a social historian, asking and answering the question, ‘why (with a handful of significant exceptions) do women in Greek myths not have nostoi?’ Part of its explanation is that mythical constructions of male and female characters must not contradict fundamental expectations about the behaviour of the sexes in ‘real’ society.

Fisher, Maryanne L., and Ana María Fernández. The Influence of Women’s Mate Value on Intrasexual Competition. Edited by Maryanne L. Fisher. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199376377.013.52.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to engage in assortative mating, people must be accurate in self-assessments of their current worth on the mating market. We argue that people intrinsically know their worth (i.e., mate value), and that this knowledge has far-reaching implications on a variety of behaviors and decisions. Here our focus is on women’s mate value and how it relates to their intrasexual competition for access to, and retention of, romantic partners. We start with a review of definitions and the components of female mate value, discuss mate preferences in relation to assessment of mate value, and then briefly provide a sample of some auxiliary issues, such as how feelings of control over mate value influence one’s well-being. We then turn to female intrasexual competition and specifically review competitive strategy use in relation to mate value. In the last section, we provide areas for further investigation.

Abstract:
NMDA receptor encephalitis is a member of the growing group of antibody-mediated neurological syndromes that can present acutely to neurological services. In the past, these entities were undoubtedly misdiagnoses as viral encephalitis or schizophrenia. The identification of the NMDA receptor antibody and a stereotypical phenotype has greatly improved the chance of a diagnosis in these patients. Furthermore, there is good evidence for the use of early immunotherapy, which may need to be sustained and increased in resistant cases that may still achieve a full recovery. The presence of an ovarian teratoma must be excluded in young females, although young males and females may also be affected in the absence of an underlying tumor.
