Spark, Andi. "Animatrix: Animating Female Experience." Thesis, Griffith University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365369.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explores the practice and context of animating female experience, specifically responding to the issue of postnatal depression. The interrelated hypothesis argues the definition of ‘animatrix’; a term that can be used to identify a particular approach to practice that is distinctly woman-centred or woman-created. In doing so, I address unfavourable conditions in the animation industry, both historically and continuing, that discourage an authentic female voice. This study takes an exploratory self-reflective practice approach wherein I examine my own and others’ experiences and responses to mental health issues surrounding childbirth. I correlate these to associated themes of the representation of adult women, social constructs and expectations of women as mothers, concepts of taboo and abjection, along with ideas of embodiment, memory, and fragmented storytelling. Coupled with this, I scrutinise practical and structural techniques used in animating; in particular, hand-drawn animation as opposed to the use of two-dimensional, cut-out, or rigged animating techniques or sculptural or digital three-dimensional model styles. This extends to incorporating haptic and tactile aspects of a drawing-based practice, integrated with theories of flow, to develop iterative digital screen-based artworks that can be displayed in multi-modal environments. Through a critical review of my multidisciplinary practice surrounding the field of animation, I identify key criteria that may be used to designate the honorific of Animatrix to a practitioner or practical outcome. This designation and attendant criteria serve to provide a launching point for further critical discussion from academics, practitioners, and the industry about the representation and contribution of women in animation.

Walsh, Heather Raquael. "The Female Experience: Study Abroad Students in Egypt." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3193.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study explores the experiences of female students on study abroad programs, with the aim of answering the following questions: do they face unique challenges as female students (including harassment or assault), how do they avoid or cope with any negative experiences, and can we as language departments better prepare our students to have the best experiences possible? The participants for the study were primarily 12 of 50 students involved in the Brigham Young University Study Abroad to Cairo, Egypt during Spring and Summer terms 2010. Data include participant observation, student journals, and ethnographic interviews conducted during the last few weeks of the program. Data analysis reflected gendered experiences in socializing with native speakers as well as experiences with harassment, and even sexual assault. The thesis argues that proper student preparation is the key to their continued investment in culture and language learning. Future research could include a look at second language learners across the Middle East, factors that contribute to harassment and assault, and gender as a predictive factor of language gains.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of female authorship that examines the feature films of Jane Campion in order to determine how her preoccupation with the cinematic articulation of 'female experience' is expressed in her films-whether female experience can be aestheticised, and to discover whether her gender can be discerned through the films of a woman director. The exploration of these ideas entails a review of the feminist thinking, methodologies and epistemologies that are relevant to cinema, and that examine relevant theoretical positions within feminism and theories of cinematic authorship. The key lens employed here for theorising Campion's cinema is that of postmodern-feminism. As an approach, this allows an understanding of difference rather than 'Otherness', and an enquiry into gender that is neither essentialist nor constructionist, but facilitates critical thinking about both positions. The central argument of this thesis is that Campion's film practice functions as an investigation into gender difference, how women and men live together in the world-experience that world, and are engendered as female through historic, psychological and cultural experiences. This thesis therefore argues that Campion's aesthetic and perspective is not only feminist, but also, female, and feminine, and her work a cinematic articulation of female experience.

Eberhardt, Antoinette. "The experience of instant messaging upon adolescent female relationship." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1324.

Full text
Abstract:
Social Interaction Technologies (SIT) have broadened the horizon of communication in terms of the way people are able to communicate. It is now possible to interact with others across the world and engage in numerous activities ranging from dating to political movements, hobbies and even professions (Chigona, Chigona, Ngqokelela, & Mpofu, 2009). Adolescents and pre-adolescents especially are inclined to make use of SIT in their social lives with the most popular mode of communication, apart from email, being instant messaging (IM) (Brown, Mounts, Lamborn, & Steinberg, 1993; Bryant, Sanders-Jackson, & Smallwood, 2006; Madden & Rainie, 2003). Adolescents tend to use IM regularly as a tool to maintain relationships and girls especially, use it as a tool to socialise (Jennings & Wartella, 2004; Lenhart, Rainie, & Lewis, 2001). The mobile phone or cell phone, which is another example of an SIT-based communication, has become an established medium of technical, social and commercial communication in South Africa. It has given rise to the development and vast growth of a mobile youth culture who consider it an essential tool for communicating (Bosch, 2008). In South Africa, instant messages may be sent via mobile phone using one of two methods: MXit and the SMS (short messaging service). MXit and the SMS are considered convenient tools of communication as an ongoing conversation in the form of a text message may be maintained in the present (Yoshii, Matsuda, Habuchi, Dobashi, Iwata, & Kin, 2002).

Pendleton, Kassidy. "FEMALE ADOLESCENT’S EXPERIENCE OF THEIR THERAPIST CRYING IN THERAPY." UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/hes_etds/24.

Full text
Abstract:
Therapist self-disclosure is an important topic and the literature explains that how a therapist responds to their client can greatly impact the treatment process and therapeutic alliance. One of the ways that therapists respond to their clients is through crying. Although there have been studies that conclude that the majority of therapists do in fact cry in therapy, no studies have tried to understand how this response is perceived by clients. This qualitative study aims to understand the client’s perspective and how therapists’ crying affects the treatment process and therapeutic alliance. The informants in this study were adolescent females who attended a particular therapeutic treatment center. Data was collected through a series of semi-structured interviews. Data was analyzed through a grounded theory approach in which open, axial, and selective coding was used. The results from this study indicate that therapists crying in therapy can be perceived as both beneficial and detrimental in regards to the treatment process and therapeutic alliance.

Wilson, Tanisca. "An Exploration of the College-Educated Female Incarceration Experience." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2010. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/109.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a significant increase in the nation's female incarceration rate. During 2006, the number of women in prison increased by approximately 4.5 %. The increase of female prisoners from 2005 to 2006 was larger than the average growth rate of 2.9% from 2000 through 2005. Women ages 35 to 39 made up the largest percentage of female prisoners. At the end of 2006, females made up 7.2% of the prison population under State or Federal jurisdiction, up from 6.7% in 2000. Oklahoma had the highest female incarceration rate in the nation, approximately 129, 000 inmates; followed by Louisiana, which incarcerated 108, 000 female inmates (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2006). The purpose of this study was to describe how college- educated incarcerated females in a state prison perceived their incarceration experiences. The central research question was: how do college-educated incarcerated females perceive their incarceration experience? Data were collected by conducting interviews with nine women who had a minimum of two years of college-level coursework from a regionally accredited college or university and who did not have a history of drug abuse. Findings suggest that while there are negative aspects of college-educated females' incarceration experiences, the totality of the experience was not negatively perceived.

Korkmaz, Fatma Tuba. "Rewriting Myths: Voicing Female Experience In Margaret Atwood&#039." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12612766/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Myths have been an undeniable source in both shaping and expressing the values, norms and behavioural patterns in societies. However, the archetypes in these myths have helped to oppress women in their personal and social lives and have forced them to accept identities which actually are not theirs. Feminist archetypal theorists propose that through a detailed study of common images of women&rsquo
s writings, fantasies, dreams and myths, the archetypes that women possess will be uncovered and the female experience will have the chance to be voiced more accurately. The aim of this thesis is to explore Surfacing and The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood and Indigo and The Leto Bundle by Marina Warner to lay bare the attempts of both writers to break away from the male-oriented myths so as to rewrite female experience via rewriting myths. In four novels, the archetypes and mythical elements are used in rewriting the gender and sexual identity markers which have long been imposed on women by patriarchal mythmakers. By rewriting these markers, both writers not only voice the genuine female experience and the body but also pave the way for the creation of new myths which would celebrate female identity and freedom.

Johnson, Jessica N. "Gender Inequality in the Workplace| The Experience of Female Administrators." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10751250.

Full text
Abstract:

Gender inequality continues to impose limitations on the progress of women in a number of ways. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how female administrators have experienced gender inequality in the workplace in order to gain a better understanding of the barriers they have encountered. This study explored participants’ administrative background, experiences as an administrator, challenges encountered related to gender inequality, and what was learned (i.e., coping, strategies to address gender inequality). The findings revealed the main challenges participants’ encountered in the workplace were based on pay and promotion. Through this study, female administrators were given an outlet to express their concerns regarding gender inequality and provide their input concerning strategies that may be effective in addressing gender inequality in the workplace.

Watts, Sarah Louise. "Exploring the lived experience of stress amongst female police managers." Thesis, University of Essex, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.617062.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how stress is experienced in the everyday lives and work of female police managers. Current conceptualisations of stress within organisational and practitioner stress literatures are grounded in measuring, isolating and thus managing workplace stressors. Together with the social norms and professional discourses surrounding stress, these perspectives neglect the experiential constitution of stress at the level of the lived body. To address this research gap, the thesis draws on key tenets of Merleau-Ponty's (2002) phenomenological perspective to empirically explore the experience of stress. Data is collected through the use of photo-elicitation and in -depth semi-structured interviews with twenty managerial police women. The medium of the visual image overcomes some of the difficulties in encapsulating strong feelings and emotions common to stress, to allow the emergence of a wider diversity of stress interpretations. Three main findings chapters serve to contribute to debates surrounding the lived experience of stress at work. The first chapter explores stress from the organisational context of the police, focusing on how organisational histories and traditions influence the circulation of ideas as to what it means to 'be' a police officer. The second chapter centres on the embodiment of stress, paying particular attention to how the body is drawn on in discussions of stress. The final findings chapter explores how stress is at once socially situated and individually experienced, looking at the various ways of communicating what stress is and how it may be represented or shared on a collective level. A final discussion chapter then serves to resituate these findings within current academic and practitioner debates, demonstrating how the key conceptual contributions made by the study provide new insights into stress at work.

Blankenship, Sara K. "Still on the Sidelines: the Female Experience in Sports Media." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2014. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc699891/.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study aims to analyze the lived reality of women working in sports media today. Through systematic analysis of 12 in-depth interviews, the findings of this study suggest that the adoption of technological advancements in news media and all associated outlets have created a leveling effect for women due to the demand for highly skilled individuals who can handle the digital demand of modern news production. This study suggests that longtime gender disparities in sports media are experiencing a bit of a reprieve due to the massive digital audience and the need for professionals who can deliver information quickly and efficiently and with accuracy. However, the persistent symbolic annihilation of women as well as hegemonic hiring practices that emphasize aesthetic appeal have created a difficult path for women to move off the sidelines and into roles with more creative and analytical breadth, even with a rapidly increasing demand for jobs in the media industry.

Raver, Elizabeth. "The lived experience of math anxiety for female elementary school teachers." Thesis, Capella University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3666122.

Full text
Abstract:

This study sought to better understand the phenomenon of Math anxiety as experienced by female elementary school teachers, teaching grades 2-5. Using qualitative research methods to collect and analyze data, ten participants were recruited for open-ended interviews designed to collect data in the form of verbatim statements. The analysis of this data resulted in qualitative descriptions of the lived experience of Math anxiety by focusing on what Math anxiety is and how it precipitates. In addition, a description of the meaning and essence of Math anxiety was constructed. Results of this study include teachers' descriptions of factors they associate with Math anxiety including frequently changing Mathematics curriculums, student and parental issues, mandatory statewide online Mathematical assessments, teacher evaluations that require statewide student Mathematical assessment scores and parental input, and budgetary decisions adversely affecting students and faculty. Participants described time restrictions, painful past memories, feelings of Mathematical inadequacy, and Mathematics/gender issues. In addition, participants described how Math anxiety may decrease with humor, greater Mathematical experience, and/or by understanding Mathematics on deeper levels due to the newly adopted Common Core Mathematical Standards. Up until the completion of this dissertation, the researcher has not been able to locate any studies describing the lived experience of Math anxiety in female elementary school teachers. Through the voices of the teachers themselves, it is hoped that this novel approach may increase the understanding of Math anxiety for educators, parents, students, administrators, and researchers.

Mutegeki, Kathryn, and Caroline Iverman. "Women who Live with Female Genital Mutilation : Experience with Healthcare Providers." Thesis, Röda Korsets Högskola, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:rkh:diva-2134.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: An estimated 125 million women live with Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) worldwide. Despite it being internationally recognized as a human rights violation. FGM is still practiced in approximately 29 countries, most of them in Africa and the Middle East. FGM has no health benefits, whereas there are short and long terms negative consequences that can cause physical and psychological problems. Aim: To describe the experiences of women who live with FGM and their subsequent interactions with healthcare providers in countries where FGM is not a tradition. Method: A literature study based on ten studies with a qualitative research design. Results: Five main themes were found; Knowledge of FGM, Language Barriers, The Gender of Healthcare Provider, Interactions with Healthcare Provider and On Display. Conclusion: Patients had difficulties due to the language barriers. There was a preference for female healthcare providers. Patients were affected by interactions with healthcare providers as well as lack of knowledge. Patients also had their genitals put on display for others. Clinical significance: With increasing migration, it is important that healthcare providers do not judge, but instead treat and care for these women with respect and empathy.

Tah, Edith Manyong. "The role, position and experience of female teachers within faith schools." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2016. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/16556/.

Full text
Abstract:
For hundreds of years leadership of religious organisations has been dominated by males, despite the acknowledgement that much religious work and support of the institutions has been done by women. Historically, leadership carried the notion of masculinity and the belief that men were born with certain leadership traits and therefore make better leaders than women. Nevertheless, current thinking contests this view and argues that leadership can be taught and learned and it is possible to develop leader traits in any individual, regardless of gender. This research sets out to contribute in promoting women’s leadership in faith schools. The research employs a qualitative method of data collection, and adopts the critical realist and feminist theorising standpoint. This research presents results of case studies involving the Catholic, Anglican and Muslim faiths. Through in-depth interviews, an exploration on the views of religious authorities, school authorities and female teachers, regarding the role, and position, and experiences of female teachers within faith schools is presented. The research reveals the reality and complexity of barriers encountered by female teachers from a cultural, social, institutional and religious perspective that hinder women’s career advancement. These case studies provide strong first-hand evidence that is hoped to influence both practice and policy. Through the interaction and involvement of head teachers, school governors and religious authorities concerned with the management of the schools, the research aspires to support a process of enlightenment — particularly to individuals who influence decision making processes — to implement strategies that will allow equal representation among the genders in leadership positions within education in faith schools.

Dunn, Caroline Stephanie. "The experience of female football fans in England : a qualitative study." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2012. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20192/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is little, arguably insufficient literature in the mainstream (or 'malestream') domain of sports research focusing exclusively on female football supporters and looking at their reasons for their fandom as well as their particular experiences. This thesis, based on 100 questionnaire responses and 27 in-depth face-to-face interviews, explores respondents' narratives, analysis and perception of their own experience as a football supporter. It positions itself within a tradition of feminist standpoint research, defining the researcher interrogating the object of her own fandom as an 'aca/fan', and stressing the importance of self-reflexivity. Jennifer Hargreaves (1994: 1) refers to her own research as a 'political intervention' as she works to make women's sport a standard topic for sports sociology scholarship; my intent is to do the same for women's sports fandoms. The qualitative interviews have given rise to three key themes - the female fan's 'supporting career', her practices of fandom and the ways in which she negotiates her identity, and her experience of the importance of the supporters' trust movement. It also discusses the responses of clubs and football authorities to their female fans and their intentions (or failures) to market the sport to girls and women. Although every object of fandom and performance of fandom is different in both perception and practice, whether the individual is male or female, this thesis shows that there are some significant overlaps in experience and performance among people who share a particular fandom. However, female fans - even though they identify themselves simply as 'fans' - also share an experience of negotiating a complex fan identity as women within a sport that is institutionally sexist.

Abstract:
As female students have traditionally been underrepresented in a number of academic disciplines (e.g., Hernandez et al., 2017), and because female students have often encountered obstacles in persisting in their preferred fields of study (e.g., Hughes, 2012), it's important to elevate female voices and learn how to better support them in academia. In order to pursue this, original qualitative research was conducted to better understand the academic experience of undergraduate female students pursuing a degree in an CFLE approved family science program. As part of this presentation, participants will learn about the female undergraduate experience and what obstacles they often encounter. Specifically, from the results of this study, participants will learn about female students' desires to be challenged and to have diverse perspectives included in the classroom, and also about the stigma they often experience due to their chosen field of study. Implications for programs and professions will be discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the experiences of academic women in order to gain an in depth understanding of factors that encourage and discourage their career advancement. A qualitative design and a Feminist standpoint framework guided the study. 11 faculty members from different faculties were interviewed in this study: eight female academics and three male academics from three Swedish universities: Linköping, Örebro and Stockholm. The study looked at the factors that encourage women academics career advancement such as: personal, family and academic factors. While, factors that discourage their career advancement have been also discussed and such factors are: the lack of support, network and mentorship; the reconciliation of the private life and the professional life; the lack of time: excess academic and administrative workloads. The results of this study also revealed that the lack of academic support, mentorship and the combination of family and work duties appeared to be the greatest barriers for the career advancement of the female academics. study concludes that despite the Swedish government countless series of measures and reforms to improve gender equality and equal opportunity in higher education, the number of female academics in the top ranking especially professorship is still very low and the career progression is also slow compared to their male counterpart.

Abstract:
Friends are of crucial importance to lesbians lives, their significance heightened due to lack of acceptance from blood family, work colleagues and society. Despite a proliferation of literature on lesbians love relationships, lesbians friendships remain understudied. In the light of theorising about widespread shifts in intimacy patterns in modern industrial societies, this thesis examines the role of friendship for contemporary lesbians. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, using lesbian feminist, feminist psychological and mainstream sociological theories to interpret lesbians negotiations of their friendships and preoccupations with their own continually developing sense of self. The study finds that firstly, the most significant issue in negotiating friendships is deciding on a lesbian identity despite socialisation to compulsory heterosexuality. Friends are expected to be accepting and supportive or they are lost. Discrimination, the fact that the lover is the best friend, struggles with difference in lesbian communities, time constraints and a more general shift to individualism mean that community and family contacts are replaced by small, supportive and affirming friendship networks. These meet needs and within them lesbians negotiate a sense of self, but for the most part with no template of political consciousness. Secondly, while friendships are important, they are also difficult. The fluidity of the friendship relationship, blurred boundaries between friends and lovers, and womens moral imperative to care all provide barriers to communication. Thirdly, while lesbians value the relational self, a confident sense of self is challenged when close-connected relationships sit at odds both with mainstream, heterocentric culture, and with traditional models of psychology which promote independence and separateness. Lesbians who are confident communicators, who have access to alternative feminist discourses which value relatedness, and who, together with their friends, are open to change, are able to negotiate satisfactory friendships and relationships. The study demonstrates lesbians complex subjectivities as changing selves are negotiated through friendships, love relationships and communities, particularly through experiences of loss.

Abraham, Theresa Denise. "Female Veterans' Combat Experience and PTSD on Male Partners' Psychological Distress and Relationship Quality." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6500.

Full text
Abstract:
Female veterans' combat exposure to trauma places them at risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which has consequences for healthful reintegration to family and civilian life. Previous research found that wives who provide continuous care to male veterans with PTSD experience symptoms of psychological distress; however, little research has been conducted on the influence of female veterans' PTSD on their intimate male partners' (IMPs) psychological well-being. A multivariate correlational design was used to examine the influence of female veteran PTSD on psychological distress and relationship quality in IMPs. The couples' adaption to traumatic stress model was used as the theoretical framework. The research questions examined (a) the difference between female veterans with and without PTSD on the length of time in the relationship, combat experience, the total number of deployments, and IMP psychological distress and (b) the influence of female veterans' combat experience, PTSD, and IMP psychological distress on relationship quality. A sample of 71 IMPs between the ages of 18 and 65 provided survey research data on the variables of interest. Psychological distress, number of partner deployments, and length of time in relationship discriminated significantly between IMPS whose partners were diagnosed with PTSD, not diagnosed, or did not know about the PTSD diagnosis. The regression results revealed that the psychological distress of IMPs and the number of partner deployments positively predicted relationship quality. Attention to female veterans and their families can contribute to increased retention of female service members in the Army and successful integration into family and civilian life.

Kruger, Yolanda. "The Lived Experience of Having a Trusted Advisor for Female Corporate Executives." Thesis, Capella University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10640512.

Abstract:

This study addressed the lived experience of corporate executive women who have had a trusted advisor. The relayed impact and significance of trusted advisors for their career development was portrayed. Traditionally, women lagged behind men in numbers in key corporate positions. Due to increased international efforts to level the playing field over the last decade, more women were present at the executive level in corporations. Understanding the experience of these women is crucial for psychology practitioners in the workplace to strategically support and enhance working conditions in the corporate environment. In this study, the phenomenon of what it is like for corporate executive women to have had a trusted advisor was explored through the descriptions of their perceptions and experiences. A qualitative, phenomenological research design was utilized to collect, analyze, and describe data and synthesize the description of the experience and process of having or having had a trusted advisor. The experience of nine executive women was recorded and transcribed through open-ended, conversational, face-to face interviews. Over 400 meaning units were scrutinized to arrive at individual, and eventually, composite textural and structural descriptions of the phenomenon. The essence of the experience of the executive women was portrayed and the findings presented. This portrayal of the “what and the how” of the trusted advisor experience revealed a complex process of human connectedness, sense of self, and the importance of trust for these nine women. Seven themes were common to all the participants; unconditional support, communication/interaction, trust, feelings associated with the trusted advisor relationship, personal and professional integrity, pathway to career and growth, and advice and decision making. The essence of the experience of having a trusted advisor was clearly set in the relational world of human experience and was best represented as the give and take of a shared dyadic relationship.

Cunial, Trotta Elisa. "Initiation and becoming a therapist : investigating female experience towards a grounded theory." Thesis, Regent's University, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.646079.

Full text
Abstract:
Initiation as a rite of passage is strongly linked to the history and practice of psychotherapy and counselling psychology. The absence of recent studies on this topic encourages research in this area. This research investigates the initiation experiences of seven female participants as they became qualified as psychotherapists and counselling psychologists, i.e. in their ‘becoming a therapist’. Data were collected through open-ended interviews, and narratives analysed using the interpretive-constructivist version of grounded theory developed by Charmaz. The emerged grounded theory (considered a preliminary theory due to the limited number of participants) highlights the interplay between two fundamental agencies of the self: Being and Doing. Their interaction allows female therapists to engage in several inner and outer tasks affecting the shaping of their sense of self. The theory highlights a dynamic and non-linear process of identity transformation and shows how female therapists relate to transitions and changes on a personal and professional level. The emerged theory is relevant and informative for the current practice of counselling psychology, as it emphasises the importance of female therapists' personal and professional development. By considering the psychological impact and influence of initiation, it highlights how the process of female therapists' becoming unfolds and shows how this can serve their clinical practice.

Abstract:

This research was a constructivist grounded theory study exploring what experiences facilitated doctoral degree completion for female CES degree recipients. Researchers have discovered that women doctoral students are at greater risk for not completing their doctoral degrees. Additionally, there is a dearth of information related to how CES women doctoral graduates persist to degree completion. Therefore, the research question that guided the current study was: What doctoral education experiences facilitated degree completion for CES women doctoral degree recipients?

The researcher utilized purposeful sampling and sought a diverse sample of volunteer participants. Six female participants, one of whom was a woman of color, were selected for the study. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed consistent with the process of grounded theory. The theory, themes, categories, and subcategories emerged from the data.

Data revealed the overall theory to be: The Process of Completion as an Inter-Connected System of Experiences with Self and Others. The two main themes included in the theory were: (a) Relationships as Sources of Support and Catalysts for Growth and (b) Navigating Obstacles. The categories that comprise the theme Relationships as Sources of Support and Catalysts for Growth were: (a) Personal Growth and Development Occurs through Relationships with Others and (b) Professional Growth and Development Occurs through Relationships with Others. The categories that comprise the theme Navigating Obstacles were: (a) Navigating Systemic Obstacles and (b) Navigating Individual Obstacles. The results of this research were discussed in relation to existing literature and implications for the CES field were identified.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at investigating the marks of female gender inscription through poems written by women between the years 1980 to 2012 in the context of the contemporary Western world Judeo-Christian matrix, based on theories of Empirical Science of Literature, the Radical Constructivism and the Study of Neuroscience. Investigates the portrait of the muse in poetry on a journey through time and this contrasts the mellow tone of the lyrical voices of Brazilian poets such as Darcy Denófrio France (Jataí - Goiás), Lilia Pereira da Silva (Itapira - Sao Paulo), Rachel Naveira (Field Great - Mato Grosso do Sul), Valéria Villela (Rio de Janeiro - RJ) and the Portuguese poets: Ana Luisa Amaral (Porto), Agnes Lawrence (Porto) and Maria Teresa Horta (Lisbon). It denounces the invisibility of woman writer in the literature system responsible for the choices of the writers who excel in anthologies and important awards as Jabuti in Brazil and Camões in Portugal. It makes clear the fact that although her books do not circulate in literary circles, they exist and this justify their participation in the official canon which until then reserves female writers a much smaller parcel than to the male writers. In his corpus brings concepts such as observers of second order and linguajante subject from Maturana and Varela; the relationships between the management of life and homeostatic processes responsible for the survival of the conscious mind, present in Neuroscience with Damasio and his studies on the issues of self, the emergence of the self autobiographic responsible for giving the brain a spiritual self that gives the human sense of their identity and make us understand the social inscription of gender that is rooted since childhood in all social subjects and leaves deep marks as those found during the investigation of the lyric voice in the poems and their recurring themes such as confession, marriage, culture, repression, sexuality, full of the feeling of oppression of the individual woman behind the lyrical voice. In this investigation we also present concepts worked from studies of researchers such as Ernest von Glasersfeld, Michel Foucault, Norbert Elias, Siegfried Schmidt, Stuart Hall, Wilhelm Reich, to name the most relevant.

Auer, Deborah. "The experience of female patients seeking elective rhinoplasty surgery : a narrative inquiry." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2018. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/25906/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to understand what motivates patients to have an elective rhinoplasty, taking into consideration any societal, familial, cultural and intrapersonal influences. The research question explored how, if at all, surgery impacts women's embodied sense of themselves and if there is a way of providing psychological support to this patient group. Four female patients were interviewed preoperatively and postoperatively using a narrative inquiry approach. The research offers a detailed qualitative contribution in a field that is predominantly quantitatively studied. The research explored the nuances of why female patients want to have rhinoplasty surgery. The narratives of the patients showed that the motivation to have surgery is based on external and internal factors. The external factors revealed the following: society's acceptance of cosmetic surgery, the influence of the media, the experience of the consultation and how risk is understood. The internal factors were influenced by the patients' experience of the death of significant family members, a need to separate from patriarchal and matriarchal family members, feelings of body shame, a fear of negative evaluation from others, and objectification of their body in preparation for surgery. Following surgery, a psychological shift was discussed by each patient; this indicates that cosmetic surgery does indeed have a psychological impact. The implication for practice is that clinicians need to have a better understanding of the motivation of this patient group to be able to offer the appropriate psychological support. Awareness also needs to be raised with surgeons, to help them better understand how the surgery they perform can have a psychological impact. This research showed that patients proceeding with cosmetic surgery could benefit from having specialised psychological support preoperatively and postoperatively. This would contribute to more realistic expectations for surgery and, hopefully, a better outcome for both patient and surgeon.

Jenner, Susannah A. "An exploration of applied psychologists' experience of working with female refugees or asylum seekers that have experienced sexual violence." Thesis, University of East London, 2012. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3031/.

Full text
Abstract:
There appear to be specific issues that psychologists need to consider when working with female refugees and asylum seekers that have experienced sexual violence. These include ethical, theoretical and practical concerns regarding psychological models and approaches, dilemmas regarding professional, personal and political stances, as well as challenges encountered when working with refugees and/or survivors of sexual violence in general. Research regarding applied psychologists‟ experience of working with this client group is limited, but it is important in order for them, and the services they work in, to meet the needs of this vulnerable group. Hence, eight applied psychologists were interviewed and transcripts analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. The analysis resulted in the formation of four super-ordinate themes: 1) Impact of the work, 2) Personal and professional identity, 3) Struggles with the tools of the trade and 4) Holding on to a „both/and‟ view. Implications of the findings concerned four areas: 1). politics and ideology of the profession, 2). psychological models and approaches, 3). support and supervision for professionals, and 4). increasing service user involvement in clinical practice, service development and research.

Bulmer, Gordon Roy. "Evaluating the labour market experience of Canadian male and female 1986 University graduates." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/10449.

Full text
Abstract:
A major issue in labour economics concerns the differences in earnings between males and females. This thesis evaluates the male-female wage gap of the 1986 university graduates using The Follow-up of 1986 Graduates (NGS). The wage differential among graduates with bachelor degrees widens over the period 1986-1991. The increase in wage discrimination is the result of a change in the skill sets of males and females. However, wage discrimination decreases among graduates with masters degrees. The main reason for the decrease is the improved returns, relative to males, that females earn for their human capital characteristics. The results are obtained using Oaxaca's (1973), Cotton's (1988) and Wellington's (1993) decomposition methodologies. Wellington's (1993) two-period decomposition takes advantage of the panel nature of the data and has been employed only once previously on Canadian data. This thesis shows that the analysis of wage differentials is sensitive to the parameters of the model and the underlying populations.

Previous research indicates that among civilians and female veterans, a history of sexual violence is associated with negative experiences with gynecological care. We attempt to extend these findings to active duty female U.S. military officers. We hypothesize that in this population (1) sexual violence history status predicts emotional reactions to the pelvic examination; (2) that this relationship is mediated by military rank; and (3) recollections of the first pelvic examination are correlated with reactions to the most recent pelvic examination. Sixty participants completed an online survey, consisting of six questionnaires, tapping attitudes and reactions to gynecological care, history of trauma, recommendations, and demographic information. There is insufficient statistical evidence to support either a relationship between sexual violence history and reaction to the most recent pelvic examination, or that rank mediates this potential relationship. However, there is strong evidence that the first pelvic examination experience was positively correlated with the most recent pelvic examination experience. Participants, regardless of sexual violence status, reported stronger reactions to the first pelvic examination than to the most recent examination. The results are not consistent with previous work for several possible reasons including the definition of sexual violence, the role of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and homogeneity of the sample.

The purpose of this study is to explore the entrepreneurial experience of female public accountants, including their motives, difficulties encountered and solutions adopted. This study adopted Qualitative Interviewing Method, aiming at 12 female public accountants, who initiated accounting firms around the central area of Taiwan. Based on Benjamin and Philip’s model (1986), which identidied two types of entrepreneurial motives, named "pull" and "push", this study has found both types of motives existed among these surveyed public accountants. The financial problems which often encounteres in general industries seem not really matter in public accounting industry, on the other hand, developing new clients is the most common difficulty in the initial stage. Launching their business, entrepreneurs then faced the problem of using professional knowledge and skill appropriately, and selecting proper solutions. To deal with thoese difficulties mentioned above, female public accountants surveyed chose to join the profesional association in order to seek the opportunities to share experiences from experienced peers, or chose to keep good relationships with taxation department or the ex-colleagues worked in accounting firms.

Abstract:
Client sexual advances may be a common occurrence in therapy, yet there is little information available with strategies for managing them. In hope of initiating a dialogue, five female therapists experiences were examined for possible insights. Informal semi-structured interviews provided data for a qualitative thematic analysis. Questions focussed on therapists accounts of incidents, how they were managed, impact on therapy, and speculations on potential differences between female and male therapists experiences. Discussing the topic with colleagues or supervisors and adequacy of training were also explored. Six overarching themes were derived; (1) sexual advances, (2) special relationships, (3) impact on therapist, (4) maintaining boundaries, (5) taboo topic and, (6) being female. Implications for counsellor training, supervision, and future research were discussed.

In Taiwan, due to lack of positive learning in sports, the role and status of the athletes is not attached importance by the society. People tend to look down upon an athlete. Therefore, being a boxer is also recognized as a negative impression. However, I always believe that if an athlete has obtained outstanding results in his/her professional field, he/she must shows equivalent quality in character. In this study, in order to explore the life of my sport, I applied narrative inquiry as a methodology, because only in narrating my life, the events and actions will become meaningful. Based on the belief, the reflections of a Taiwanese female boxer were even more precious. In the inquiry, the psychological adjustment process during games, the interaction with my fellow coach, difficulties I had to face and how I dealt with them, as well as my experience in the Boxing games were discussed. This research emphasized the wakefulness of the narration. Aware of the three narrative dimensions, I attempted to find a frequency that resonated with readers to avoid ourselves into narcissism and solipsism of danger. On the other hand, I was always aware of the ethical issues involved in the study, concerned about the relationship of responsibility. This research represented the preparation of a Taiwanese female boxer, her experiences in attendance of the games that were presented in the ring stories and four themes: sports experience, epiphany, injury, and being a female boxer. Finally, there were my reflections and growth.

Abstract:
“Come on, you know this shirt will look so good with that pair of blue jeans you bought the other week?” This mannequin says to me, or at least I am imagining that she is talking to me, let alone trying to convince me to buy this white shirt. She stands in the middle of the entrance of the shop next to her male companion that I assume is also trying to trick other men into buying the chino pants and collared shirt that he is wearing. I know that I just have to walk past and go over to get my prescription refill at the pharmacy located upstairs. Flash forward to an hour later, and I have gotten my prescription from the pharmacy, I even had some time to stop and buy a salad at the café. Something in my other hand feels a little heavier. Is that? Oh shoot! It’s a shopping bag; in it, the white shirt and a pair of black heels. I seem to have completely ignored the fact that I went into the shop and bought the white shirt! As I was making my way to go and pay for it, the mannequin told me how that black pair of heels would tie the outfit in together with my blue jeans and this white shirt. I notice a few other women with shopping bags and seemingly happy as they move around the aisles of the mall; I am these women. A young and black middle class female in a shopping mall that has just made a purchase from money she earned from work. This is what drew me into this topic; understanding the shopping experience that encompasses ideas around shopping and consumption practices as a black woman in post-apartheid South Africa.
