Abstract:
Introduction and aim:This study examines the effect of life skills education on mild intellectual and developmental disabled students.Life skills education program is widely used in other disabilities but rarely utilized with children who have intellectual disabilities, possibly on the assumption that the cognitive skills on which it capitalizes are less likely to be available. The primary goal of education for this group is to increase self-sufficiency by teaching functional skills needed in everyday life across home, community, work, and leisure domains.Method:A total of 30 participants took part in this study (20 male, 10 femal). The IQ level of these participants were assessed by WISC_R. we also assessed intervention effects on three skills targeted by classroom teachers. The three target skills were self-knowledge, social and interpersonal relationships, and anger-management.Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient and factor analyses were used to examine the reliability and validity of the LSEQ in this special students sample. Results:The alpha coefficient reliability of the total scale of the LSEQ was 0.76. The total effect of Life skills education program showed positive effects ( T=-7.136 df=29, p< .001 ), Self-knowledge ( T=-5.882 df=29, p< .001 ), interpersonal relationship ( T=-7.430 df=29, p< .001 ), anger-management ( T=-4.762 df=29, p< .001 ).Cunclusion:Overall, results showed positive effects of the intervention on participants" skills. Further research on the effects of various systematic instructional strategies on the social- skills of individuals with various disabilities in multiple settings is recommended.

Abstract:
We have conducted the first-ever study of female and male Afghan university students about entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education. Students at this new university in Afghanistan provided data on their intentions, entrepreneurial disposition, perceptions about the university role, and their beliefs about barriers and motives to entrepreneurship. On the one hand, we find significant differences between women and men in disposition and intentions, with women having lower levels of disposition and intentions. On the other hand, the two groups display remarkably similar views of the importance of numerous entrepreneurship motives and barriers. They also feel the same about the positive university support of their entrepreneurship interests. In other words, although young Afghan women and men appear to feel different about themselves and their plans, they hold relatively similar views on the reasons for entrepreneurship, the impediments to entrepreneurship, and the potential of university education and support to foster entrepreneurship in both sexes.

Abstract:
Pronunciation is very important in speaking. Most of English learners usually face some difficulties in pronouncing English words properly especially in word stress. One of the influential factors is because of first language interference. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze students’ stress production of two, three, four, five, and six syllable words in order to explain the possible factors that influence the Madurese male and female students in pronouncing English word and to analyze students’ stress production of syllable words in order to explain the influence of gender on students’ pronunciation. This research employed qualitative descriptive research. The subjects of this study were 20 students of Madura Islamic University. The data were collected by using questionnaires, students’ recording and table. The result of this study shows that Madurese dialect gives significant positive influence on two syllable words stress on first syllable. It is because in Madurese dialect sound system, stress in two syllable words are frequently produced on first position. Meanwhile, male and female students were almost the same in pronouncing stress correctly on three until four syllable words. On the contrary, they put stress improperly on words that consist of five to six syllables. In this case, the students put the stress correctly and incorrectly from three until six syllable words, it does not indicate that it was influenced by Madurese local language. The possible factors affecting the students’ word stress is because of motivation, age, target language exposure, lack of pronunciation training and lack of knowledge about the rules of word stress. Last, Gender does not influence much in pronunciation moreover in word stress. In segmental feature, female students’ pronunciation consonant is better than that of male students but not in vowel. The students who pronounce correctly were the students who always train themselves. Pedagogically, this study can be the additional information to develop male and female students’ stress production.

Swanson, Jacqueline V. (Jacqueline Viola). "Ethical Reasoning Among Baccalaureate Female Nursing Students." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1989. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc332287/.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus for this study was ethical reasoning among baccalaureate female nursing students. This descriptive and correlational study examined the ethical reasoning of freshmen and senior students at a large southwestern university for women. The research instrument used was the Defining Issues Test developed by Rest. The senior nursing students differed significantly (p < ,05) from the freshmen nursing students in ethical reasoning. However, nursing majors did not differ significantly from the non-nursing majors. A multiple regression analysis was performed that identified two factors associated with ethical reasoning (viz., age and GPA), The correlation coefficients were r= .377 for age and P_ score and r= .315 for GPA and P score. Older students were found to be significantly more advanced in ethical reasoning than were younger students. Students with higher GPAs used principled reasoning significantly more often than did students with lower GPAs. Of interest are the findings related to demographic characteristics, ethnicity, and religious preference. The sample was predominantly white, but a significant difference in use of principled reasoning between whites and non-whites was found. In the sample, whites used ethical reasoning more often than did non-whites. The students in the sample who labeled themselves as Baptists were significantly different from Traditional Christians (Methodists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Lutherans, and members of the Church of Christ) and Other Christians (all others, excluding Baptists, Catholics, and the Traditional Christians). The Baptist group used principled reasoning less often than did the other two groups of Christians. The Catholics were not significantly different from the Baptist, Traditional Christian, or Other Christian groups. The results are ambiguous and may reflect only a conservative philosophy or a conservative theological ideology rather than cognitive processing.

Abstract:
Student evaluations are often used by administrators to make important career decisions for professors such as offers of tenure, increase in salary or other monetary reward (see Frick, Chadha, Watson, & Zlatkovska, 2009). Research has consistently shown that helpfulness in its various operational definitions is one of the most important traits to students when evaluating a professor (For example Silva et al., 2008). Previous findings have demonstrated that inequalities exist among subjective student evaluation ratings of men and women, (see Bennet, 1982). The present study extended this research by manipulating the instruction styles (strict vs. permissive), as well as the gender of the instructor, in a hypothetical syllabus. Participants were randomly assigned to read 1 of 4 syllabi which varied only by instruction style and gender of the instructor. Subsequently, participants answered follow up questions on the content of the syllabus which emphasized the gender of the instructor. Evaluations were collected in the form of both Likert scale ratings and responses to open ended questions. The written evaluations were analyzed for emotional content using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count Software (LIWC, Pennebaker, Francis, & Booth, 2007). A 2 (male vs. female) X 2 (strict vs. permissive) between subjects ANOVA was applied to the data collected. The results support the hypothesis that gender inequalities do exist, particularly when the professor was established as having a strict style of student interaction.

Pennington, Yvette. "Cyberbullying Incidents Among African American Female Middle School Students." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2017. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3280.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent research has shown an increase in cyber bullying acts against middle and high school students. The National Center of Education Statistics (2010) reported that cyberbullying incidents increased 73% between the years of 2007 and 2009. In 2011, 75% of cyberbullying victims were adolescents (National Center of Education Statistics, 2013). Using data collected from the Pew Research and American Life Project, the study examined the prevalence of cyber bullying acts against African American female adolescents compared to Caucasian male and female adolescents and African American male adolescents. Additionally, the study reported the cyber bullying incident that occurred most frequently as either directly using texting or indirectly using social media websites. Past research studies have shown a prevalence of cyber bullying acts against Caucasian females. The participants in this study were 737 adolescents 12-17 years old. The results suggested that a prevalence of cyber bullying acts against African American female students occurred at a significantly lower rate than Caucasian female and male students but a significantly higher rate than African American male students and Hispanic male and female students. Additionally, indirect cyberbullying incidents occurred significantly more frequently than direct cyberbullying incidents.

Abstract:
Studies of female at-risk students have proved minimal with specific regard to those leaving the comprehensive high school in order that they may attend alternative programs. Research on related literature concerning the history of education in the United States, effective instructional practices, appropriate grade level curriculum, school structure and climate, and at-risk students with emphasis on the female gender was examined. Studies were also completed using survey instruments and focused interviews involving students enrolled at three continuation high schools in northern California. Students responded that attendance and low academic performance influenced their decision to leave the comprehensive high school. Other factors affecting: their enrollment included large class size, lack of teacher instructional support, mismatch of student ability to courses in which they were enrolled, and an insufficient offering of courses and extra curricular options that were attractive to them. Students did acknowledge that they were encouraged to do their best by teachers at the continuation high school. Easily established friendships was a second positive reflection of participants. Recommendations for instructional application and future research are included within the dissertation. The research of this study focused on site controlled factors which influenced female students' decision to discontinue their education at the comprehensive high school in favor of an alternative educational program. The findings of this research, therefore, is under the control of both educators and policymakers and very much in the realm of direct influence. Educational leaders are encouraged to review these findings for consideration in refining school practices and decisions for restructuring school design.

Abstract:
This study sought to explore the lived experiences of five female, first-generation, low-income students who attend a metropolitan commuter university, and investigate how a structured undergraduate research experience exerts influence on the women's academic and social involvement. A qualitative case study with a narrative and grounded theory analysis was selected as the most appropriate approach for exploring this topic and addressing the guiding research questions. Interview and journal data were collected and analyzed to identify significant themes. The importance of finding an academic home, the significance of interacting with faculty and peers, and the validation of a metropolitan commuter university education through a scholar development process emerged as significant findings. Implications and recommendations on programmatic and institutional levels are included, as well as suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
AbstractThe low participation of women in engineering fields is a common problem worldwide. As a result, universities are starting to create plans to attract more female students. However, there are no documented methodologies to guide institutions in this process. Hence, this chapter describes a method to attract more women to STEM programs, using one Latin American university as a case study. The procedure starts by establishing a baseline of the student population, using specific metrics to determine possible biases in admissions or graduations. The results show a small number of registered female students; thus, the method suggests different strategies to improve this situation. The next step is proposing activities to empower young girls to study engineering, describing indicators developed to evaluate the effectiveness of the activities. The case study includes participation from elementary, middle, and high school students. Results show that girls and boys participated in the proposed activities, and they maintained or improved their motivation to study a STEM program.

Abstract:
Despite the existence of Directorate of Learner Support Services in National Open University of Nigeria, many students are unaware of the services and/or do not use them. The majority of students who consider leaving the University do not seek help from the Directorate. Female students particularly, fall in this category in National Open University of Nigeria. This substantiates research findings which argue that students who need help the most are the least likely to seek it out. As a matter of ethics, Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution has an obligation to take steps toward retention and support of their students to become more engaged and more effective learners, and to build in them resilience. This paper examines ways of developing capacities to expand female student retention and building resilience for their success in National Open University of Nigeria. It combines student survey data, qualitative research with students, and analysis of institutional data to dissever information. It finds that to maximize female student retention and build resilience for completion of programmes admitted for, student and staff capacities could be developed through engagement nurtured within mainstream activities. This will not only engender a strong sense of belonging but will also build in the female students, confidence and resilience to complete their study. Further, the University Management needs to nurture a culture of belonging and creating the necessary infrastructure to promote female student engagement, retention and success.

Abstract:
To promote life-long learning skills in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) education, authors designed and implemented a student-centered instruction in the CAD courses. A quasi-experimental pre-and-post test research design was implemented. Experimental group students were asked to design screencast tutorials with their verbal explanations recorded. Students shared their screencast tutorials with their peers and provided feedback to each other’s video tutorials. Control group students were asked to review the instructor made screencast tutorials. A life-long learning survey, an engineering attitude survey, an exit project survey, and a CAD modeling exam were used as the study instruments. A total of 147 students participated in this study over three years. Findings indicated that female and first generation college students in the experimental group performed better than their peers in the control group in the CAD modeling exam. Our student-centered instruction was more affective on female students’ and first generation college students’ skills and knowledge than male students’ and not-first generation college students’ skills and knowledge.

Abstract:
This article reports on a statistical investigation into the engagement rates of male secondary-school students with school counsellors in co-educational state secondary schools in Aotearoa New Zealand. The data analysis evidences a discrepancy between the engagement rates of male and female students, substantiating what has been known anecdotally: that male students are less likely than their female peers to meet with school counsellors. Data from 2615 counselling records across eight schools nationwide indicate that male students engage between 3% and 11% less than their female peers. Further research in 2022 is planned to investigate any barriers or constraints that could account for this discrepancy and expose possible facilitative factors that may increase male student engagement rates with school counsellors.

Abstract:
In intensive production, freshly hatched cockerels are culled in the layer hatchery (7 billion males each year), On the other hand, for meat production rearing female birds has not economic benefits because of male broiler chicks have a faster growth rate and better feed efficiency than females. In this regards several methods are being developed for sex determination in the chick embryo during the incubation period. But these methods need to be rapid, cost-efficient, and suitable practical for commercial use. Additionally, sex determination should be done before pain perception has evolved in chick embryos. Biotechnology by in ovo technique to sex determination of between male and female chicks or sex reversal could improve production and eliminate ethical dilemmas for poultry industries. In birds, the differentiation of embryonic gonads is not determined by genetic gender with the certainty that occurs in mammals and can be affected by early treatment with a steroid hormone. During the development of the chick embryo, the genotype of the zygote determines the nature of the gonads, which then caused male or female phenotype. The differentiation of gonads during the period called the "critical period of sexual differentiation" is accompanied by the beginning of secretion of sexual hormones. Namely, any change in the concentration of steroid hormones during the critical period affects the structure of the gonads. Many synthetic anti-aromatases such as federazole and non-synthetic in plants, mushrooms, and fruits containing natural flavonoids have been used in the experiments in ovo injection of anti-aromatase had no negative effect on the growth performance of sexual reversal female chickens. In conclusion, administration of an aromatase inhibitor causes testicular growth in the genetic female gender, and estrogen administration leads to the production of the left ovotestis in the genetic male gender. Therefore, in the early stages of embryonic development, sexual differentiation can be affected by changing the ratio of sexual hormones. In this review, effects of some substances applied by in ovo injection technique on sex reversal and performance in chicks.

Abstract:
Abstract Reframing failure, individual problem solving, and access to technology are signatures of the “maker movement,” which directly inspired university makerspaces across the globe. In particular, university makerspaces have become a significant resource to students taking courses that require the creation of tangible prototypes. While research investigating a student’s experience prototyping in a makerspace is growing rapidly, not much has been done to investigate the student prototyping experience in exclusively virtual settings. The goal of this study is to identify trends in the virtual prototyping experience with intentions of informing university instructors, makerspace facilitators, and students of where to anticipate struggles and frustration with the virtual prototyping experience. This study uses journey maps (a qualitative design method) to investigate the virtual prototyping experience for 12 undergraduate students, of diverse academic disciplines, at an R1 university in the United States. Results from this study suggest that the functional prototyping experience (which emphasizes independent contributions towards a tangible product) generates more emotional volatility than the experiential prototyping experience (which emphasizes collaborative efforts toward a final prototype). Other notable results include statistically significant differences between Female and Male self-reported emotional levels at the beginning of the experiential prototype journey.

Abstract:
Today, the number of female students that enrol in degrees related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas is quite low. So, numerous initiatives have arisen to promote these degrees and encourage female students in these areas. In this context, the EuLES Network (u-Learning Environments in Higher Education), an interdisciplinary network created in 2010 at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) to foster research, interaction, cooperation and transfer of knowledge and technologies related to learning and open education, has developed two projects oriented to High School Students: “WikinformáticA! en Aragon” and “Women in STEM by EuLES”. WikinformáticA! en Aragón is a competition for student groups in which they develop a wiki on prominent women in the history of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The objective is the visibility of women involved in technology. The purpose of the Women in STEM project is to offer testimonies of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to encourage scientific vocations, especially in young people and girls. The project consists of conducting video interviews of women who work or study in these disciplines. All the videos, along with a short biography, are posted on the web.

Abstract:
Physical education in modern higher education should contribute to an effective solution to reduce student morbidity. Therefore, one of the promising directions for improving the system of physical education in higher education institutions is the development of sound didactic techniques and methods that provide a comprehensive solution to the problem in question. The aim of the study is to develop recommendations for the correction of the physical condition of female students belonging to special medical groups, contributing to the improvement of the physical condition of these female students. The methods used were the theoretical analysis of literature, generalisation, the study of practical experience, self-observation, testing, a formative experiment and methods of mathematical statistics. The participants in the study were female first-year medical students in a special medical group comprised of 40 persons. The proposed recommendation for physical condition correction includes the exercises of Pletnev and Pilatas, their methodology and sequence of performance; components of physical activity considering the functional capabilities of female students. Upon the conclusion of the study, there was a significant improvement in health, endurance, strength and speed indicators. The growth rate of physical fitness indicators in the experimental group increased from 36.35 % to 49.21 %, and less significantly in the control group from 8.20 % to 22.02 %, the number of students with a higher level of health increased from 20 to 40 and decreased from 20 to 10, respectively. Thus, the proposed organisational-methodological recommendations make it possible to increase the level of physical and functional fitness of female students of the special medical group and to strengthen their physical health.

Abstract:
This study aimed to reveal the most important problems facing students of the College of Education from their point of view and its relationship to some variables. The study used two tools: the first is the open interview (focus group), and the second is a questionnaire designed by the researcher. It contained 65 items distributed on six axes: costs and assignments, tests, academic professor, academic registration and guidance, the content of study materials, and finally the classrooms have been verified as being truthful and consistent. The results showed that the problems related to the classroom were the most prominent facing students, while the problems related to the academic professor were the least important from their point of view. The order of importance of the problems varied according to the specialization taught by female students, and by the different program registered with it, as well as by the different status of the female student, whether she was a full-time student or on the job. Faculty of Education has to ensure that the students are progressing and achieving high performance during the program with the less problems they face. If students do not meet these criteria/expectations, measures need to be taken to support them and help them improve their skills, knowledge, dispositions and achievement. If students do not meet standards, the College might not get full accreditation, and will have an Area For Improvement. This means that the College has to take other measures to improve students’ achievement to receive full accreditation.
