Full text
Abstract:
Nuzi was a town in what is today northeastern Iraq. It flourished as part of the kingdom of Mittanni from about 1475 to 1350 BCE, early in the Late Bronze Age. Uniquely for a town of its moderate size, Nuzi produced a huge number of documents of which almost 7,000 survive. These include economic, legal, administrative, and even a few scholastic texts. They come from government offices in the town, private houses from several of the town’s neighborhoods, and private villas in Nuzi’s wealthy suburbs. The present volume presents text editions, including transliterations, translations, and analyses of some of these tablets from the suburbs, predominantly from a single family’s records, a huge private archive, one of the largest ever to have been unearthed in the entire ancient world.

Abstract:
This section of the book revisits a question from the book The Lattice Boltzmann Equation (for fluid dynamics and beyond). This question is: What did we learn through lattice Boltzmann? Did LB make a real difference to our understanding of the physics of fluids and flowing matter in general? Here, the text aims to offer a subjective view, without the presumption of being right. Besides being routinely used for a broad spectrum of complex flow problems, there are, in the opinion expressed in this part of the book, a few precious instances in which LB has made a palpable difference.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter offers a brief consideration of the relationship between history and form in Cane. Given the wide range of interpretations of the text's parts, it comes as no surprise that critics have presented dramatically differing interpretations of the whole. Some have discerned a progression toward resolution and synthesis; others a suspended state of fragmentation and division; while others a triumphant achievement of polyphony and hybridity. With a few noteworthy exceptions, however, commentaries on Cane have largely overlooked the text's engagement with history. They may address Cane's representation of the present as an outgrowth of the past, and its connection with contemporaneous racial discourses and practices, but they do not generally treat the text's form as itself an enactment of the historical contradictions shaping the time and place of its creation.

Billheimer, John. Hitchcock and the Censors. University Press of Kentucky, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5810/kentucky/9780813177427.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Motion Picture Production Code controlled the content and final cut on all films made and distributed in the US from 1934 to 1968. Code officials protected sensitive ears from the standard four-letter words as well as a few five-letter words like tramp and six-letter words like cripes. They also scrubbed ‘excessively lustful’ kissing from the screen, and ensured that no criminal went unpunished. Censors demanded an average of twenty changes, ranging from trivial to mind-boggling, on each of Alfred Hitchcock’s films during his most productive years. No production escaped these changes, which rarely improved the finished film. Code reviewers dictated the ending of’ Rebecca, shortened the shower scene in’ Psycho, absolved Cary Grant of guilt in’ Suspicion, edited Cole Porter’s lyrics in’ Stage Fright, and decided which shades should be drawn in’ Rear Window. Nevertheless, Hitchcock still managed to push the boundaries of sex and violence permitted in films by charming (and occasionally tricking) the censors and by swapping off bits of dialogue, plot points, and individual shots (some of which had been deliberately inserted as trading chips) to protect cherished scenes and images. The director’s priorities in dealing with the censors highlight both his theories of suspense and the single-mindedness of Code officials. Hitchcock and the Censors’ traces the forces that led to the Production Code and describes Hitchcock’s interactions with Code officials on a film-by-film basis as he fought to protect his creations, bargaining with Code reviewers and sidestepping censorship to produce a lifetime of memorable films.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Probing the Earth with isotopes’ shows how, using isotopes, we have come to understand the structure and behaviour of the Earth. The outer few tens of kilometres are divided into continental and oceanic crust. Below the crust, the sub-surface is divided into the mantle and the core. From the base of the crust to about 2,800 km depth, the Earth is rocky and composed of minerals like olivine and pyroxene that are rich in magnesium, iron, and calcium. From about 2,800 km to about 5,100 km depth the outer core is liquid. The remaining 1,200 km or so to the centre of the Earth is solid metal.

Abstract:
The magnetic bar-code on the ocean floor provides convincing evidence of moving continents, yet, as with the discovery of the structure of DNA, few are convinced—at first. Drilling in the deep oceans and geochemical work at mid-ocean ridges provides further evidence in support of the Vine–Matthews Hypothesis. Application of the hypothesis to data collected in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans establishes sea-floor spreading as the process that creates new oceans and, in conjunction with reversals of the geomagnetic field, stamps the bar-code into the rocks beneath the sea bed.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter gives an overview of the law on contract formation and third party beneficiaries in Cambodia. Much of the discussion is tentative since the new Cambodian Civil Code only entered into force from 21 December 2011 and there is little case law and academic writing fleshing out its provisions. The Code owes much to the Japanese Civil Code of 1898 and, like the latter, does not have a requirement of consideration and seldom imposes formal requirements but there are a few statutory exceptions from the principle of freedom from form. For a binding contract, the agreement of the parties is required and the offer must be made with the intention to create a legally binding obligation and becomes effective once it reaches the offeree. The new Code explicitly provides that the parties to the contract may agree to confer a right arising under the contract upon a third party. This right accrues directly from their agreement; it is not required that the third party declare its intention to accept the right.

Poplack, Shana. How nonce borrowings become loanwords. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190256388.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Making use of a unique series of speech corpora collected between the 1940s and 2007, this chapter traces for the first time the diachronic trajectory of nonce forms in bilingual production over a real-time period of 61 years and nearly a century and a half in apparent time. It tests and refutes two standard assumptions about nonce borrowings: (1) they increase in frequency and diffusion, and (2) they originate as code-switches and are gradually converted to loanwords. Results show that nonce forms generally do not go on to become established loanwords: few persist, let alone increase over time. Based on several diagnostics, analysis of the linguistic trajectory of those that diffuse and increase in frequency shows that they are not integrated gradually; instead they assume recipient-language grammatical structure abruptly. Code-switches are not converted into borrowings; the decision to code-switch or borrow is made at the moment the other-language item is accessed.

Full text
Abstract:
In just a few years, the magnetic bar-code secreted beneath the world’s oceans had provided detailed intelligence on the motions of the plates. When combined with other data from the sea floor, this allowed geophysicists to reconstruct the history of entire ocean basins following the rifting of Pangea. Some folk, however, are never happy, and ‘glass-half-empty’ types might well have complained that, impressive as all this was, it accounted for less than 200 million of the 4500 million years of Earth history, i.e. just 4%. What about that other 96%? Did plate tectonics operate through part or all of this long history and, in any case, how could you ever know, since the evidence had all been shredded by the closure of earlier oceans? There was hope: the same process that had so conveniently sequestered the recent history of the plates in the sea floor had also been at work throughout much of earlier geological time, recording the story in rocks onshore. By comparison with the high-definition picture of plate motions offered by bar-codes and fracture zones, this recording was monochrome, fuzzy, and incomplete. Yet, by the mid-1950s, it had already provided conclusive evidence that continents were truly mobile. Curiously, hardly anyone noticed.

Doing What Matters in Times of Stress: An Illustrated Guide. Adapted Version for the Caribbean. Pan American Health Organization, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275123935.

Full text
Abstract:
The Caribbean Development Bank and the Pan American Health Organization have developed this stress management guide to help people cope with adversity. The publication is an adaptation for the Caribbean of Doing What Matters in Times of Stress: An Illustrated Guide, a World Health Organization publication to support implementation of its recommendations for stress management. This guide is for all who experience stress, ranging from parents and other caregivers to health professionals working in difficult situations. Informed by available evidence and extensive field testing, the guide provides information and practical skills to help cope with adversity. While the causes of adversity must be addressed, there is also a need to protect and support people’s mental health. This publication has five sections, each containing a new idea and technique to cope with stress. These are easy to learn and can be used for just a few minutes a day to help reduce stress. Readers can go through one section every few days and take time to practice the exercises and use the learning in the days in between. Another option is for them to read the book through once, applying whatever they can, and then read it again, taking more time to appreciate the ideas and practice the techniques. Practicing and applying the ideas to daily life is key for reducing stress. The guide can be read at home, during break or rest periods at work, before going to sleep, or at any other time when people might have a few moments to concentrate on taking care of themselves.

Abstract:
This book has demonstrated how the study of material culture has come of age. From being the preserve of a few hardy souls working in disconnected island Communities — the social and economic history of consumption, ethnographies of contemporary consumption, the anthropology of goods, such as clothing and pottery, material culture studies in archaeology — it has become the stamping ground of many. The concluding article here demonstrates how the study of material culture has come of age. From being the preserve of a few hardy souls working in disconnected island communities — the social and economic history of consumption, ethnographies of contemporary consumption, the anthropology of goods, such as clothing and pottery, material culture studies in archaeology — it has become the stamping ground of many. Things have now become a key part of worlds. That was always true in the sense that the layout of things has always been a powerful pointer to a culture's propensities and dispositions.

Abstract:
This part of the book walks through the evidence that we have gathered to estimate international governance. The route takes us through forty-six international organizations (IOs), and tells the reader how IO bodies are composed, what decisions each body makes, and how they make decisions. This sounds simpler than it actually is, and few readers will accompany us on the entire journey. However, it may be reassuring for the expert and the non-expert alike to know that should they have a specific query about any of the organizations covered in this book, they can discover how we code it by looking in the profiles in this book or online....
