Abstract:
The bond-valence method has been used for valence calculations of FeMo/V cofactors in FeMo/V proteins using 51 crystallographic data sets of FeMo/V proteins from the Protein Data Bank. The calculations show molybdenum(III) to be present in MoFe7S9C(Cys)(HHis)[R-(H)homocit] (where H4homocit is homocitric acid, HCys is cysteine and HHis is histidine) in FeMo cofactors, while vanadium(III) with a more reduced iron complement is obtained for FeV cofactors. Using an error analysis of the calculated valences, it was found that in FeMo cofactors Fe1, Fe6 and Fe7 can be unambiguously assigned as iron(III), while Fe2, Fe3, Fe4 and Fe5 show different degrees of mixed valences for the individual Fe atoms. For the FeV cofactors in PDB entry 5n6y, Fe4, Fe5 and Fe6 correspond to iron(II), iron(II) and iron(III), respectively, while Fe1, Fe2, Fe3 and Fe7 exhibit strongly mixed valences. Special situations such as CO-bound and selenium-substituted FeMo cofactors and O(N)H-bridged FeV cofactors are also discussed and suggest rearrangement of the electron configuration on the substitution of the bridging S atoms.

Abstract:
The numerical modelling of geosynthetic-reinforced piled embankments using both the finite element method (FEM) and finite difference method (FDM) are compared. Plaxis 2D (FEM) was utilized to replicate FLAC (FDM) analysis originally presented by Han and Gabr on a unit cell axisymmetric model within a geosynthetic reinforced piled embankment (GRPE). The FEM and FED techniques were found to be in reasonable agreement, in both characteristic trend and absolute value. FEM consistently replicated the FDM outputs for deformational, loading, and load transfer mechanism (soil arching) response within the reinforced piled embankment structure with a reasonable degree of accuracy. However the FDM approach was found to give a slightly higher reinforcement tension and stress concentration but lower reinforcement strain at the pile cap than FEM, which was attributed to the greater discretize of the model geometry in the FDM than in FEM.

Abstract: Plates are commonly used to support lateral or vertical loads. Before the design of such a plate, analysis is performed to check the stability of plate for the proposed load. There are several methods for this analysis. In this research, a comparative analysis of rectangular plate is done between Finite Element Method (FEM) and Finite Difference Method (FDM). The plate is considered to be subjected to an arbitrary transverse uniformly distributed loading and is considered to be clamped at the two opposite edges and free at the other two edges. The Finite Element Method (FEM) is a numerical technique for finding approximate solutions to boundary value problems for partial differential equations. It is also referred to as finite element analysis (FEA). FEM subdivides a large problem into smaller, simpler, parts, called finite elements. The work covers the determination of displacement components at different points of the plate and checking the result by software (STAAD.Pro) analysis. The ordinary Finite Difference Method (FDM) is used to solve the governing differential equation of the plate deflection. Convolution PML is known to have excellent wave absorbing capability, and has been used combined with FDM and FEM. Most of them are splitting type formulation for explicit FEM or FDM. Here implicit non-splitting type convolution PML procedures consistent with mixed formulation FEM as well as displacement based FEM are developed. The resulting coefficient matrices for convolution PML are symmetric if corresponding coefficient matrices of FEM are symmetric. The developed method is applied to dam-reservoir-foundation systems including reservoir cavitation, and the validity of the method is demonstrated.

Purely numerical methods based on finite-element approximation of the acoustic or elastic wave equation are becoming increasingly popular for the generation of synthetic seismograms. We present formulas for the grid dispersion and stability criteria for some popular finite-element methods (FEM) for wave propagation, namely, classical and spectral FEM. We develop an approach based on a generalized eigenvalue formulation to analyze the dispersive behavior of these FEMs for acoustic or elastic wave propagation that overcomes difficulties caused by irregular node spacing within the element and the use of high-order polynomials, as is the case for spectral FEM. Analysis reveals that for spectral FEM of order four or greater, dispersion is less than 0.2% at four to five nodes per wavelength, and dispersion is not angle dependent. New results can be compared with grid-dispersion results of some classical finite-difference methods (FDM) used for acoustic or elastic wave propagation. Analysis reveals that FDM and classical FEM require a larger sampling ratio than a spectral FEM to obtain results with the same degree of accuracy. The staggered-grid FDM is an efficient scheme, but the dispersion is angle dependent with larger values along the grid axes. On the other hand, spectral FEM of order four or greater is isotropic with small dispersion, making it attractive for simulations with long propagation times.

Noticeably in casting and heat treatment process, computational methods are commonly engaged to predict process and mechanical characteristics such as solidification time, cooling speed, hardness and residual stress, in which analyzing thermo-mechanical coupled process necessitates such heat transfer, microstructure transformation, and stress. This paper proposes a FDM/FEM hybrid method for thermal stress analysis in casting process; taking advantage of each computational method, we use both FDM and FEM to analyze thermal stress. We use FDM to predict temperature distribution and microstructure and then transfer the result data to FEM to calculate thermal stress distribution. In this process, a systematic field data conversion procedure is developed for a successful data transfer. For the validation of this proposed method, numerical examples are presented and compared with antecedent experiment results. The interface data conversion program developed in this study can be used for any other program as well as FDM and FEM.

The application of cellular structural materials provide new light-weight capabilities in many engineering fields. But the microstructure significantly influences the strength, the fatigue and fracture behavior as well as the life span of a structure made from cellular materials. The current paper illustrates the general idea how to take into account the cellular microstructure in the stress and strain analysis. The detailed geometry, including all discontinuities in the microstructure is available, for instance from measurements provided by the computed tomography (CT). The proposed simulation methodology is a combination of the finite element method (FEM) and the finite cell method (FCM). The FCM approach is applied in regions where discontinuities occur, avoiding a body-fitted mesh. As basis of the FEM-FCM coupling the commercial FEA package Abaqus is used. The theoretical background and the overall simulation workflow along with specific implementation details are discussed. Finally, academic benchmark problems are used to verify the developed coupling method.

Numerical procedure based on finite element method (FEM) and finite difference method (FDM) for the analysis of bolt-grout interactions are introduced in this paper. The finite element procedure incorporates elasto-plastic concepts with Hoek and Brown yield criterion and has been applied for rock mass. Bolt-grout interactions are evaluated based on finite difference method and are embedded in the elasto-plastic procedures of FEM. The experimental validation of the proposed FEM-FDM procedures and numerical examples of a bolted tunnel are provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method for practical applications.

SAMMANFATTNINGDet sägs att vi lever i ett individualistiskt och flexibelt samhälle. För den starka individen innebär detta att karriär, utveckling och privata intressen värderas högre än lojalitet gentemot arbetsgivaren. Att byta arbetsgivare under sitt yrkesverksamma liv betraktas idag mer som regel än undantag. Hur resonerar då blivande officerare och stridspiloter som har valt att utbilda sig till ett yrke som endast går att utöva i en enda organisation? Kan studenter, som i princip bara har en arbetsgivare att välja på, verkligen ha behov av karriärvägledning? Syftet med studien är att få en förståelse för hur blivande officerare och stridspiloter ser på sig själva i organisationen, samt vilka upplevda behov de har av karriärvägledning. För att undersöka detta område närmare har jag genomfört gruppintervjuer med fem blivande officerare och fem blivande stridspiloter. Resultatet visar att en majoritet av deltagarna i studien har en marknadsmässig inställning. Karriär, utveckling och privata intressen är i hög grad styrande för deras val, men de visar också tecken på institutionalisering då de har tagit till sig organisationens värderingar som sina egna. Studenterna upplever ett behov av både taktisk och strategisk karriärvägledning.

This diploma work has been conducted for the consulting company Ramböll inUppsala, Sweden with the purpose to perform a study with the calculation programFEM Design 9.0 made by Strusoft. The aim has been to find out if it is possible to gainadvantage by utilizing more advanced 3D software for design calculations, instead ofthe traditional methods currently used in construction works.The method of approach has been to model an existing warehouse building with theprogram FEM Design, and then compare the results with those attained with FrameAnalysis and hand calculations. These results are then analyzed. An evaluation is maderegarding to what benefits can be achieved using a more advanced 3D-model.The results of the study show that the differences between the methods are not ofany significance with regard to the design of the steel frame. However in morecomplex materials such as reinforced concrete, the differences become more notable.The conclusions drawn by the authors of this study into FEM Design are that theeducation requirements of the program are higher than for simpler programs, whosepurpose are solving predetermined problems. More time is also needed to create themodels used in full 3D software compared to the traditional simpler methods.Despite this there is a great potential in using FEM Design for both small and largeconstruction projects.

Examensarbetets syfte är att utforma rutiner och verktyg för att säkerställa att relevant information om allvarliga och frekventa problem når föregående processer. Den information som föregående processer tar emot ska vara av sådan karaktär att de vet vad de ska fokusera på i sitt förbättringsarbete. Strävan har varit att ta fram ett felrapporteringsverktyg där alla fel som påträffas i produktionen ska kunna gå att rapporteras in. Utifrån den datainsamling som har gjorts via sekundär- och primärdata har den information som ska rapporters in tagits fram. Felrapporteringen ska ske i en Lotus Notes databas, detta för att programmet redan finns inom SDE`s väggar. De fel som hittas och rapporters in i felrapporteringsverktyget riktas var och en mot ett ansvarigt område. Tillexempel om det fattas ett hål på en artikel och det hålet finns med på ritningen riktas felet mot inköp. Varje ansvarigt område ska månadsvis skriva ut och åtgärda sina tre ”fem i botten” scorecard i kategorierna konsekvens, kostnad och frekvens. Fem i botten scorecarden bygger på paretoprincipen, det betyder att scorecarden visar de fem största felen varje månad i de tre olika kategorierna. Den information som loggas in i felrapporteringsverktyget kommer även att vara ett reklamationsunderlag då inköp står som ansvarigt område. Dataanalysen kommer att göras i ett Business Intelligence verktyg som heter QlikView. Detta för att QlikView på ett smidigt sätt tar data från en eller flera databaser och gör det möjligt för användaren att snabbt och enkelt analysera informationen.

The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge about how teachers use Favorite Mathematics in teaching to promote students' knowledge of the five abilities. The purpose was also to get an idea of how the teacher relates to the teaching if the teaching aid is not enough. We chose to conduct qualitative interviews via zoom with F-3 teachers. The sample consists of six experienced teachers who have worked with mathematic teaching in primary school for at least 4 years. In our result, it appears that the teachers use the teaching aid to a large extent, but that they need to supplement this with exercises and extra material.

Kandidatprojektet är ett gestalningsprojekt inom arkitektur av en grundskola för ca 700 elever i Fornuddsparken i Tyresö kommun söder om Stockholm i Sverige. Syftet med projektet har varit att utforska hur en grundskola kan utformas med fokus på relationen mellan arkitektur, pedagogik och fysisk rörelse inomhus och utomhus. Grundskolan sammanfattad med siffror: - Fem gröna floder för att dra in parken i skolan, skapa struktur för hinderbanor, dämpa ljudnivån, för en mer varierad inre miljö och för en friskare luft. - Sex omslutande skivor för formmässig stabilitet, struktur för orienterbarhet och för en tydligt sammankopplad inre och yttre gatumiljö. - Tio kvarter innehållande trygga basytor att utgå från med utblickar mot parken, de livfulla gatorna mellan kvarteren och mot lugnare miljöer. - Mer än hundra träpelare kombinerade med massivträ och träregelväggar. Skolans gestaltningsarbete vilar på tre konceptuella beslut: - Idén att elever och lärare ska inspireras till fysisk aktivitet både inomhus och utomhus.   - Organiseringen av inre rum går före yttre form. Det flytande öppna rummet som skapas mellan de mer slutna funktioner har prioriterats före den yttre formen. - Arbeta för en stark integration mellan park/utemiljö och skolbyggnadens inre miljö. Arbetsmetodiken har bestått av en systematisk process med en dynamisk växelverkan mellan delprocesser som: Studiebesök på skolor, inläsning om pedagogik och skolarkitektur, lokalprogramstudier med sambandsdiagram, idé och konceptutveckling med collage, skisser och texter, gestaltningsprocess med hjälp av skisser, CAD-ritningar, fysiska modeller och digitala 3D-modeller, diskussioner och kritisk analys av gestaltade lösningar med handledare, kursdeltagare och stödpersoner.
This bachelor project is an architecture design project of an elementary school for 700 students. The site location is in a park, Fornuddsparken, in Tyresö south of Stockholm in Sweden.The aim for the project was to explore how a school building of this size can be designed with a special focus on the relations between architecture, pedagogy and both indoor and outdoor physical movement. The elementary school with numbers: - Five green rivers to connect the park with the interior of the school, establish a structure that can be used for obstacle courses, improve the indoor acoustics, create a more diverse environment and for a more healthy air inside the building. - Six embracing, folded slabs to give stability to the form, a structure for easier orientation on the site and to structurally connect the inside street corridors with the outside schoolyard. - Ten blocks with more private and safe base rooms with views at the park, the more crowded street corridors between the blocks and views at more serene sceneries outside the school area. - More than one hundred pillars combined with bearing massive wood elements and wood stud walls. The design is based on three main concepts: - The idea that students and teachers should be inspired to more indoor and outdoor physical movements. - The priority in the design process should be the organization of the interior spaces not the form itself; an inside to outside approach in forming the building. - The aim to integrate the outside park and schoolyard with the inside of the building. The working method has been based on a systematic process with a reciprocal action and iteration of sub processes like: Study visits to schools, reading sessions about teaching and school architecture, studies of the program for the school with space organization diagrams, developing ideas and concepts with collages, sketches and writing, the main design process using tools like sketching, CAD-drawings, paper and wood models and digital 3D-models, discussions and critical analysis of the created drawings with the aid of tutors, students and other advisors.

Nowadays, with the evolution of the additive manufacturing processes and its possibility of usage for industrial applications, the tendency is to adapt, optimize or to develop new concepts for the improvement of functional parts or assemblies characteristics. One important concept is the Finite Element Method which offers the possibility to describe mathematically all the physical phenomena which occurs during the functionality of the parts.
