Abstract:
Insulin resistance, a hallmark of metabolic disorders, is a risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Impairment of insulin responsiveness in vascular endothelium contributes to insulin resistance. The reciprocal relationship between insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction augments the pathophysiology of metabolism and cardiovascular functions. The most abundant green tea polyphenol, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), has been shown to have vasodilator action in vessels by activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). However, it is not known whether EGCG has a beneficial effect in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced endothelial dysfunction. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed either a normal chow diet (NCD) or HFD with or without EGCG supplement (50 mg·kg−1·day−1) for 10 wk. Mice fed a HFD with EGCG supplement gained less body weight and showed improved insulin sensitivity. In vehicle-treated HFD mice, endothelial function was impaired in response to insulin but not to acetylcholine, whereas the EGCG-treated HFD group showed improved insulin-stimulated vasodilation. Interestingly, EGCG intake reduced macrophage infiltration into aortic tissues in HFD mice. Treatment with EGCG restored the insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of eNOS, insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1), and protein kinase B (Akt), which was inhibited by palmitate (200 μM, 5 h) in primary bovine aortic endothelial cells. From these results, we conclude that supplementation of EGCG improves glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and endothelial function. The results suggest that EGCG may have beneficial health effects in glucose metabolism and endothelial function through modulating HFD-induced inflammatory response.

Abstract:
The paper explores the origins, development and basic genre features of сommedia dell'arte. The first part of the paper deals with the archetypal comic elements of сommedia dell'arte. The historical significance of this type of comedy, as Pandolfi (1957) stresses, lies in the fact that it unequivocally confirms the autonomy of theatrical art by imposing the neverending quest for the freedom to critically examine all the aspects of social life without any dose of censorship or limitations. Its comic pattern has the roots in the grotesque and absurdity of real life, which allows for the actors to fully affirm their artistic aspirations. Shakespeare’s romantic and pastoral comedy focuses on the final reconciliation or conversion of the blocking characters rather than their punishment: the rival brothers Oliver and Orlando are reconciled; Duke Frederick is miraculously converted. This was also a theme present in the medieval tradition of the seasonal ritual play, as Frye notices and claims that “we may call it the drama of the green world, its plot being assimilated to the ritual theme of the triumph of life and love over the waste land...Thus the action of the comedy begins in a world represented as a normal world, moves into the green world, goes into metamorphosis there in which the comic resolution is achieved, and returns to the normal world” (Frye 1957, 182). The Forest of Arden in As You Like It represents an emanation of Frye’s “green world”, which is analogous to the dream world, the world of our desires. In this symbolical victory of summer over winter, we have an illustration of “the archetypal function of literature in visualizing the world of desire, not as an escape from ’reality’, but as the genuine form of the world that human life tries to imitate” (Frye 1957, 184). In addition, the marriage between Orlando and Rosalind takes place in the Forest of Arden not by a coincidence. This is Shakespeare’s vision of the final unity and healing only to be accomplished in the ‘Mother’ Forest, as Hughes terms it (1992, 110), which ultimately represents a symbol of totality of nature and men’s psychic completeness. In Frye’s reading of Shakespeare’s green world, an identical idea of the heroine as the lost soul is expressed: “In the rituals and myths the earth that produces the rebirth is generally a female figure, and the death and revival, or disappearance and withdrawal of human figures in romantic comedy generally involves the heroine” (Frye 1957, 183). Thus, Rosalind represents the epitome of the matriarchal earth goddess that revives the hero and at the same time brings about the comic resolution by disguising herself as a boy (for those members of the audience and/or readers who regard the play as an instance of Hughes’ passive ritual drama and thus primarily enjoy the process of the young lovers’ overcoming various impediments on the way to a desirable end of the play).

Abstract:
Objective: The study was designed to investigate the in vivo effects of black and green tea consumption on serum lipid profile and cardiac function in hyperlipidemic rats. Methods: 24 male Wistar rats, average weight 125 g were sorted into four groups: A, B, C and D. Normal control group (A) were fed standard rat chow; the remaining three groups (B, C and D) received rat chow supplemented with 2% (w/w) cholesterol to induce hypercholesterolemia. Group C and D were administered 40 mg/ml of black and green tea respectively while group B (hyperlipidemic control) were not treated. The feeding and tea administration lasted 6 weeks. Results: Significant reduction in body weight and heart weight index was recorded in rats administered black and green tea compared with the untreated group. Black and green tea consumption also caused significant decrease in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk ratio accompanied with elevated HDL-cholesterol compared to untreated group. Significant alterations in cardiac marker enzymes: creatine kinase (CK), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were also observed in serum and heart homogenates of untreated hyperlipidemic rats which were normalized in rats administered the teas. These results are synonymous with decreased risk of atherosclerosis and protective potential on cardiac function by green and black tea. Conclusion: We conclude in this study that regular intake of black and green tea might be useful in treatment of obesity and prevention of cardiovascular complications arising from hyperlipidemia.

Highlight Research Cinnamaldehyde for shrimp Dynamics of Vibrio and the correlation with shrimp health status Green and yellow Vibrio bacteria in water, intestine, and hepatopancreas of shrimp Cinnamaldehyde decrease the number of green Vibrio bacteria Abstract Disease can cause shrimp mortality and high economic losses caused by Vibriosis group. One alternative is using cinnamaldehyde which function as an anti-microbial and inhibit the production of toxins released by microorganisms. This study aimed to evaluate the administration of cinnamaldehyde on the dynamics of Vibrio bacteria and the health status of Pacific white shrimp fed with cinnamaldehyde-containing feed. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) consisted of 4 treatments and 3 replications consisting of treatment K, A, B, and C which mean feeding without cinnamaldehyde, feeding containing cinnamaldehyde dose of 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% respectively. Parameters included total bacteria (green and yellow Vibrio) in water, intestine, and hepatopancreas, as well as immune responses parameters, including total hemocyte count (THC), respiratory burst (RB), and phenol-oxidase (PO). All data were tabulated in Microsoft Excel 2016 and all statistical analysis was conducted in the SPSS v.22.0 software with one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT (P=0.05). The results showed that the administration of cinnamaldehyde influences the dynamics of Vibrio and health status of shrimp. At the beginning and at the end of cinnamaldehyde administration, green and yellow Vibrio bacteria are mostly found in water, intestine, and hepatopancreas. The administration of cinnamaldehyde to Pacific white shrimp can reduce the number of green Vibrio bacteria both in the intestine and hepatopancreas as shown in treatments C and B. Cinnamaldehyde also affected the higher percentage of yellow Vibrio bacteria in treatments C and B compared to control (K). The highest immune responses of THC and RB were produced in treatments A and C compared to K. The decrease of green Vibrio bacteria and increased colonization of yellow Vibrio bacteria were correlated with immune responses. The best treatment in this study is treatment C.

Abstract:
Urbanization leads to the growth of impervious surfaces, which increases surface runoff, causing pluvial and flash flood phenomena. Furthermore, it significantly limits the infiltration of stormwater into the ground; this, in turn, reduces groundwater supply, ultimately intensifying drought effects. In order to adapt urbanized areas to climate change, the objective is to stop these unfavorable processes and strive for recreating the natural water cycle through developing decentralized stormwater management practices on private properties. An important management instrument that motivates property owners to invest is economic incentives, such as stormwater or impact fees associated with a system of rebates/discounts that depend on the applied stormwater runoff reduction solutions. Herein, we analyze a new economic instrument—a fee for reducing natural field retention—which is planned to be introduced in Poland. We assessed the incentive and funding (income-generating) function of the fee based on the example of the Sudół river catchment in Krakow, Poland. The research involved conducting simulation calculations and assessing the incentive impact through calculating investment Net Present Value (NPV), which is the investor’s response to the proposed economic incentives included in the structure of the fee and the rebate system. This study demonstrated errors and loopholes in the suggested fee rules—too low rates that prevent achieving profitability (negative NPV) for small-scale stormwater retention practices, and incorrect conditions that enable obtaining discounted fees. We also estimated the fee rate that ensures investment profitability.

Abstract:
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is characterized by the absence of dystrophin from muscle cells. Dystrophic muscle cells are susceptible to oxidative stress. We tested the hypothesis that 3 wk of endurance exercise starting at age 21 days in young male mdx mice would blunt oxidative stress and improve dystrophic skeletal muscle function, and these effects would be enhanced by the antioxidant green tea extract (GTE). In mice fed normal diet, average daily running distance increased 300% from week 1 to week 3, and total distance over 3 wk was improved by 128% in mice fed GTE. Running, independent of diet, increased serum antioxidant capacity, extensor digitorum longus tetanic stress, and total contractile protein content, heart citrate synthase, and heart and quadriceps β-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase activities. GTE, independent of running, decreased serum creatine kinase and heart and gastrocnemius lipid peroxidation and increased gastrocnemius citrate synthase activity. These data suggest that both endurance exercise and GTE may be beneficial as therapeutic strategies to improve muscle function in mdx mice.

Abstract:
Abstract Industrial waste that contains high concentration of iron heavy metal (Fe2+) needs to be reduced into a safer limit for water ecosystem using an environmental-friendly, sustainable and low cost technology. This literature study was aimed to gather information on Fe2+ metal ion removal with biosorption method by mobilized beads-shaped Desmodesmus sp. green microalgae. Biosorbent beads are made of Desmodesmus sp. green microalgae powder binded with Na-alginate polymer. Desmodesmus sp. microalgae were cultivated in an Erlenmeyer flask with wastewater contains Fe2+ and Beijerinck growth media controlled in batch system. Analysis was conducted to study the influence of pH, size, beads, beads concentration, and Na-alginate concentration towards Fe2+ heavy metal removal efficiency on biosorption process. Research results revealed that Fe2+ heavy metal was effectively adsorbed by 1 mm beads up until 46% at maximum capacity on pH level of 6. These beads contain 8% gr/L of microalgae powder and 9% gr/L of Na-alginate. The involved function groups in Fe2+ sorption and the beads biosorbent morphology changes were analyzed by using FTIR and SEM. This biosorption research was following by analysis of Freundlich isotherm and reaction kinetics order two with linear approach. This was to shows the beads possess adsorption kinetics with optimum Fe2+ absorption capacity. Desmodesmus sp. beads are highly potential to be used as biosorbent since the heavy metal removal process was selectively conducted on wide pH level and temperature ranges, fast adsorption kinetics, and low operational cost. The smaller the beads size the wider the surface area, which leads to higher removal efficiency rate.

Abstract:
Due to the popularization of the concept of “new retailing”, we study a new commercial model named O2O (online-to-offline), which is a good combination model of a direct channel and a traditional retail channel. We analyze an O2O supply chain in which manufacturers are responsible for making green products and selling them through both online and offline channels. The retailer is responsible for all online and offline channels’ orders, and the manufacturer gives the retailer a fixed fee. We construct a mathematical function model and analyze the greenness and pricing strategies of centralized and decentralized settings through the retailer Stackelberg game model. Due to the effects of the double marginalization of supply chain members, we adopt a simple contract to coordinate the green supply chain. The paper’s contributions are that we obtain pricing and greening strategies by taking the cooperation of offline channels and online channels into consideration under the O2O green supply chain environment.

Abstract:
Experimental studies have shown the action of green tea in modulating cardiac remodeling. However, the effects of green tea on the cardiac remodeling process induced by doxorubicin (DOX) are not known. Therefore, this study is aimed at evaluating whether green tea extract could attenuate DOX-induced cardiac remodeling, assessed by cardiac morphological and functional changes and associated with the evaluation of different modulators of cardiac remodeling. The animals were divided into four groups: the control group (C), the green tea group (GT), the DOX group (D), and the DOX and green tea group (DGT). Groups C and GT received intraperitoneal sterile saline injections, D and DGT received intraperitoneal injections of DOX, and GT and DGT were fed chow supplemented with green tea extract for 35 days prior to DOX injection. After forty-eight hours, we performed an echocardiogram and euthanasia and collected the materials for analysis. Green tea attenuated DOX-induced cardiotoxicity by increasing cardiac function and decreasing the concentric remodeling. Treatment with DOX increased oxidative stress in the heart, marked by a higher level of lipid hydroperoxide (LH) and lower levels of antioxidant enzymes. Treatment with green tea increased the antioxidant enzymes’ activity and decreased the production of LH. Green tea extract increased the expression of Top2-β independent of DOX treatment. The activity of ATP synthase, citrate synthase, and complexes I and II decreased with DOX, without the effects of green tea. Both groups that received DOX presented with a lower ratio of P-akt/T-akt and a higher expression of CD45, TNFα, and intermediate MMP-2, without the effects of green tea. In conclusion, green tea attenuated cardiac remodeling induced by DOX and was associated with increasing the expression of Top2-β and lowering oxidative stress. However, energy metabolism and inflammation probably do not receive the benefits induced by green tea in this model.

Based on the self-passivation function of chitosan, an efficient, and green synthesis strategy was applied to prepare chitosan carbon dots (CDs). The quantum yield of carbon dots reached 35% under the conditions of hydrothermal temperature of 200 °C, hydrothermal time of 5 h, and chitosan concentration of 2%. Moreover, the obtained carbon dots had high selectivity and sensitivity to Fe3+. Based on the Schiff base reaction between the aldehyde groups of dialdehyde cellulose nanofibrils (DNF) and the amino groups of CDs, a chemically cross-linked, novel, fluorescent composite film, with high transparency and high strength, was created using one-pot processing. Knowing that the fluorescence effect of the composite film on Fe3+ had a linear relationship in the concentration range of 0–100 μM, a fluorescent probe can be developed for quantitative analysis and detection of Fe3+. Owing to their excellent fluorescent and mechanical properties, the fluorescent nanocomposite films have potential applications in the fields of Fe3+ detection, fluorescent labeling, and biosensing.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of beef heifers on Stapf. cv. Marandu grass pastures that were managed at three herbage allowances under continuous grazing with a variable stocking rate and were provided with mineral mix supplement or supplements with energy and protein. Seventy-two test heifers and 48 put-and-take heifers were used in a randomised design in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement [three herbage allowances (1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 kg of green dry matter/kg of bodyweight, and two supplementation levels (mineral mix or 0.3% bodyweight of a mineral–protein–energy supplement)], with two replicates per treatment (paddocks), to maintain the pre-established forage allowance. No significant difference was observed in the gain per hectare as a function of the herbage allowance, but 2.5 kg green dry matter/kg bodyweight provided the greatest average daily gain of bodyweight (0.605 kg/animal/day). The energy/protein supplementation provided the greatest average daily gain compared with animals fed only the mineral mix. The supplements in the diet of beef heifers fed at 0.3% of bodyweight increased bodyweight gains without compromising the gain per hectare at different herbage allowances.

Abstract:
Chlamydodon mnemosyne, a brackish-water ciliate which feeds on cyanobacteria, is capable of sensing the direction of light. Cells are negatively phototactic in the well-fed state and tend to swim towards the light source when mildly starved. Severely starved cells normally fail to show phototactic responses. An autofluorescent substance, which is present in all life cycle stages, occurs in, or immediately beneath, the plasma membrane of this ciliate. It is located in the anterior left side of a cell, in the same region where mildly starved cells accumulate small orange globules that form a structure known as the stigma. The diameter of the whole area where the autofluorescent substance is located appears to be smaller than the stigma; typically, it consists of two rows of blue-green fluorescence, each row subdivided into 5–10 squares. Since the blue-green autofluorescence is excited by both blue (450–490 nm) and near-ultraviolet (340–380 nm) light, it possibly originates from flavin- and/or pterin-like molecules. We suggest that the autofluorescent substance located in or beneath the plasma membrane of Chlamydodon mnemosyne acts as a photoreceptor pigment in phototaxis and that photo-orientation of this ciliate is triggered by a combined mechanism involving the photoreceptor and either the stigma or a number of light-absorbing food vacuoles as a shading device.

Due to the increasingly devastating impact of pluvial flooding on human beings’ lives and properties in cities, the use of green infrastructure to manage stormwater onsite is becoming more popular worldwide. The maintenance of green infrastructure to ensure its function has become one of the most pressing tasks facing policy makers. However, there is limited research regarding the willingness to pay the stormwater fee as a form of maintenance funding. This study utilized contingent valuation data obtained from a survey of 1101 respondents living in six pilot sponge cities in China to estimate the willingness to pay for the green infrastructure maintenance. The findings indicated that two-thirds of all respondents were willing to pay, 17% would like to pay around 6–10 RMB/month (0.95–1.59 US dollars/month), and 17.8% would like to pay more than 20 RMB/month (3.2 US dollars/month). The educational level and age of the respondents were significant determinants of the probability of willingness to pay and the amount they would like to pay. Knowledge of the concept of sponge cities was another significant influencing factor for the willingness to pay, but it did not influence the amount of payment. The findings could help policy makers make better strategies regarding the maintenance of green infrastructure and its costs.

Abstract:
This analysis aims to find out the amount of land cover change in Palembang City, where Palembang is one of the cities undergoing land change. The change in land cover is an event of shifting the type of land cover from one species to another followed by increasing and decreasing use over time or changing the function of a land at different times. In Palembang City there are several examples of changing land like paddy fields, and green open spaces. Paddy fields are agricultural farms that are physically flat surfaces, limited by bunds, and can be planted with rice, palawija or other cultivated crops. Most paddy fields are used for cultivation which are classified into 4 types namely technical irrigation, semi technical, simple and rain-fed. Meanwhile, green open spaces are elongated / lane and / or clustered areas, which prefer open, growing plants, either naturally grown and divided into 2 types: natural green open spaces and artificial green open spaces. In this analysis the data used are secondary data satellite map map of 2014 which resulted from Badan Pembangunan dan Pendapatan Daerah (BAPPEDA) Kota Palembang The method used in this analysis is the Natural Break (Jenks) method with emphasis on the color difference of each type of land cover.

Abstract:
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a frequent muscular disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding dystrophin, a cytoskeletal protein that contributes to the stabilization of muscle fiber membrane during muscle activity. Affected individuals show progressive muscle wasting that generally causes death by age 30. In this study, the dystrophic mdx 5Cv mouse model was used to investigate the effects of green tea extract, its major component (−)-epigallocatechin gallate, and pentoxifylline on dystrophic muscle quality and function. Three-week-old mdx 5Cv mice were fed for either 1 or 5 wk a control chow or a chow containing the test substances. Histological examination showed a delay in necrosis of the extensor digitorum longus muscle in treated mice. Mechanical properties of triceps suræ muscles were recorded while the mice were under deep anesthesia. Phasic and tetanic tensions of treated mice were increased, reaching values close to those of normal mice. The phasic-to-tetanic tension ratio was corrected. Finally, muscles from treated mice exhibited 30–50% more residual force in a fatigue assay. These results demonstrate that diet supplementation of dystrophic mdx 5Cv mice with green tea extract or (−)-epigallocatechin gallate protected muscle against the first massive wave of necrosis and stimulated muscle adaptation toward a stronger and more resistant phenotype.

Abstract:
A nutritional study was conducted to evaluate the inclusion of the green microalga Scenedesmus sp. at 5% (SCE-5) as an alternative fishmeal ingredient. This microalga was tested with four replicates during 45 days using isolipidic (18%), isoproteic (48%), and isoenergetic (1.9 MJ kg−1) diets. Fish fed Scenedesmus sp. showed similar growth and feed efficiency parameters as the control group. Regarding the digestive function, the SCE-5 diet enhanced the activity of alkaline pancreatic proteases, whereas it did not affect that of intestinal enzymes involved in nutrient absorption. No histological alterations were found in fish fed the SCE-5 diet, although a higher density of goblet cells in the anterior intestine and changes in gut microbiome diversity were found in this group, which collectively suggests positive effects of this green microalga on the intestine. Dietary Scenedesmus sp. improved the fillet’s nutritional quality in terms of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels, although it also increased its yellowish color. The overall results of this study showed that Scenedesmus sp. is a safe ingredient for compound feeds in rainbow trout when considering fish growth performance, animal condition, and health parameters, although it substantially affected the color of the fillet that may potentially affect consumers’ preferences.

Abstract:
An irrigation scheduling model for turnip (Brassica rapa L.) was validated using a line-source irrigation system in a 2-year field trial. The model used a water balance, a variable root length, and a crop factor function of plant age (i). Evapotranspiration was computed daily as class A pan evaporation times a crop factor [CF(i) = 0.365 + 0.0154i-0.00011i2]. Irrigation according to the model maintained soil water tension at <25 kPa at a 30-cm depth. When rainfall amounts were less than water use, leaf yields responded quadratically to irrigation rates, from 0% to 160% of the model rate, and the highest leaf yield with the lowest water applications corresponded to the model rate. Therefore, this model could replace the “feel or see” methods commonly used for scheduling irrigation of leafy vegetables grown in the southeastern United States.

Abstract:
Dark fermentation (DF) is a promising process for mitigating environmental pollution and producing “green” H2. However, wider implementation and scaling of this technology is hampered by insufficient process efficiency. In this work, for the first time, the effect of innovative pretreatment of cheese whey (CW) in a vortex layer apparatus (VLA) on characteristics and DF of CW was studied. Pretreatment in VLA resulted in a heating of the CW, slight increase in pH, volatile fatty acids, iron, and reduction in fat, sugar, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The biochemical hydrogen potential test and analysis of H2 production kinetics confirmed the significant potential of using VLA in enhancement of dark fermentative H2 production. The maximum potential H2 yield (202.4 mL H2/g COD or 3.4 mol H2/mol hexose) was obtained after pretreatment in VLA for 45 s and was 45.8% higher than the control. The maximum H2 production rate after 5 and 45 s of pretreatment was 256.5 and 237.2 mL H2/g COD/d, respectively, which is 8.06 and 7.46 times higher than in the control. The lag phase was more than halved as a function of the pretreatment time. The pretreatment time positively correlated with the total final concentration of Fe2+ and Fe3+ and negatively with the lag phase, indicating a positive effect of pretreatment in VLA on the start of H2 production.

Abstract:
The term amnesty means the waiving of punishment (to a group of people) without, however, erasing the guilt. Amnesties are usually granted in connection with political events such as national or international peace amnesties in times of political change or wars. However, there are also waivers of criminal prosecutions, popularly known as "mercy before justice". Amnesties can therefore be seen, on the one hand, as a humane act of mercy, but on the other hand they can also cause problems in the population's sense of justice, since punishments are treated differently, and the principle of equality is shaken. The concepts of punishment, guilt and innocence, as well as their representation, offer a basis for the question of how amnesties are formed in Dostoevsky's texts. Dostoevsky's characters are usually ambivalent and challenge a reflective reading as well as an ethical judgement. By making social injustice an important theme in his texts, the author focuses on the restoration of justice through amnesty. A co-responsibility in society as well as a co-guilt in a higher sense form the core of his argumentation, both as a contrast to justice, which considers the guilt of the individual, and as a consideration of man's hereditary guilt and his responsibility to the community. A comparison with ancient Greek jurisprudence also shows that amnesties were closely connected with the collective, with emotion and ritual. This results in new ways of looking at prominent texts by Dostoevsky, as will be shown with the example of The Brothers Karamazov and other works. This will provide a brief overview of how Dostoevsky understands guilt and innocence, what function punishment has in his texts and how amnesty emerges as a result

Abstract:
Parrhesia first appeared in Greek literature in the fifth century BC. Essentially, parrhesia refers to being granted the liberty to speak freely and openly without being deemed insubordinate to someone of greater authority and could otherwise lead to punishment or death. Parrhesia allows one to speak truth to power, essentially benefiting the one in power who lacks insight into the truth of a situation. In his book, Filosoferen met kinderen op de basisschool: een complexe activiteit, Berrie Heesen describes how doing philosophy with children is a form of parrhesia in that it encourages children to speak freely and openly. Parrhesia changes the adult/child relationship. Taken seriously by adults as full-fledged human beings creates a space for children to take themselves seriously while also being held responsible for what they think and feel. By giving reasons for their thoughts and feelings, and listening to those of their peers, children not only become critical listeners of others but also of themselves. They learn that what they think and feel matters — that they matter in the eyes of others and themselves, raising their self-esteem as well. In the process, children also develop their own touchstones of reality. Moreover, (self-) scrutiny is essential to feeling whole and grounded in who we are, giving us a sense of purpose and direction.

Abstract:
Grain production space, ecological service space and urban–rural development space are the classifications of land systems from the perspective of the dominant function of the land system. Grain production space reconstruction concentrates on the principal contradictions of land system changes, and is the key to exploring the transformation of land system. Therefore, the pathways, process and influencing factors of grain production space reconstruction in the Loess Plateau of Chian from 1980 to 2018 was explored from three dimensions of quantity–quality–spatial pattern in this study. Results showed that the quantity of grain production space showed a slight downward trend with a net decrease of 9156 km2 between 1980 and 2018, but its total quality showed a fluctuating growth trend under rain-fed conditions. Due to the intensification of human activities, grain production space was gradually fragmented, and the distribution tended to be decentralized, and the shape gradually became regular. Meanwhile, both the quantity and quality gravity center of grain production space moved to the northwest by 8.32 km and 86.03 km, respectively. The reconstruction of grain production space in the Loess Plateau was mainly realized through four pathways: Grain for Green, Urban Expansion, Deforestation and Reclamation, and Land Consolidation. The grain production space was mainly reconstructed through the pathway of Grain for Green after 2000. The four reconstruction pathways were the result of a combination of natural environment and socio-economic factors, but influencing factors had different strengths and directions for each reconstruction pathway. From the perspective of social economy–land use–ecological environment coupling, in order to maintain the sustainable development of the land systems, it is necessary to reduce the trade-offs of the functions of land systems as much as possible and strive to coordinate the relationship among grain production, ecological protection and high-quality development.

Adult specimens and egg masses of Rhaphidrilus nemasoma were collected in the low intertidal zone from Execution Rock, Bamfield, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, in June of 1986. Each egg mass contained about 1000 eggs. The eggs were green, spherical, and measured 125–145 μm in diameter. Larval development took place within the egg mass until the three-or four-setiger stage, at which time they emerged from the egg mass. Newly emerged larvae crawled on the bottom of the culture beakers and fed on benthic diatoms. Metamorphosis took place soon after emergence and was completed within 2 weeks. Paddle cilia were observed at the early trochophore stage, and their possible function, and the extremely high fecundity of this polychaete, are discussed.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In vertebrates, phagocytosis occurs mainly in specialized cells of the immune system and serves as a primary defense against invading pathogens, but it also plays a role in clearing apoptotic cells and in tissue remodeling during development. In contrast, unicellular eukaryotes, such as the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila, employ phagocytosis to ingest and degrade other microorganisms to meet their nutritional needs. To learn more about the protein components of the multistep process of phagocytosis, we carried out an analysis of the Tetrahymena phagosome proteome. Tetrahymena cells were fed polystyrene beads, which allowed for the efficient purification of phagosomes. The protein composition of purified phagosomes was then analyzed by multidimensional separation coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 453 peptides were identified that resulted in the identification of 73 putative phagosome proteins. Twenty-eight of the proteins have been implicated in phagocytosis in other organisms, indicating that key aspects of phagocytosis were conserved during evolution. Other identified proteins have not previously been associated with phagocytosis, including some of unknown function. Live-cell confocal fluorescence imaging of Tetrahymena strains expressing green fluorescent protein-tagged versions of four of the identified phagosome proteins provided evidence that at least three of the proteins (including two with unknown functions) are associated with phagosomes, indicating that the bulk of the proteins identified in the analyses are indeed phagosome associated.

Abstract:
Scope. Several reports in the literature have suggested the renoprotective effects of ketone bodies and green tea polyphenols (GTPs). Our previous study found that GTP consumption could elevate the renal expression of the ketogenic rate-limiting enzyme, which was decreased by a high-fat diet (HFD) in rats. Here, we investigated whether ketogenesis can mediate renoprotection by GTPs against an HFD. Methods and Results. Wistar rats were fed a standard or HFD with or without GTPs for 18 weeks. The renal oxidative stress level, kidney function, renal expression, and activity levels of mitochondrial 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) synthase 2 (HMGCS2) and sirtuin 3(SIRT3) were detected. The increased renal oxidative stress and the loss of renal function induced by the HFD were ameliorated by GTPs. Renal ketogenesis and SIRT3 expression and activity levels, which were reduced by the HFD, were restored by GTPs. In vitro, HEK293 cells were transfected with the eukaryotic expression plasmid pcDNA HMGCS2. GTP treatment could upregulate HMGCS2 and SIRT3 expression. Although SIRT3 expression was not affected by HMGCS2 transfection, the 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE) level and the acetyl-MnSOD (K122)/MnSOD ratio were reduced in HMGCS2-transfected cells in the context of H2O2. Conclusion. The ketogenesis/SIRT3 pathway mediates the renoprotection of GTPs against the oxidative stress induced by an HFD.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of two green leafy vegetables (Gongronema latifolium and Celosia argentea) on the hepatic biomarkers [Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)], cardiac biomarkers [Creatine Kinase (CK) and Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)] and histopathology of the heart of high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats, with the aim of evaluating the vegetables as functional foods. Design/methodology/approach Experimental diets consisted of Control Diet (CD), High-Fat Diet (HFD), High-Fat Diet with Blanched Celosia argentea (HCB), High-Fat Diet with Unblanched Celosia argentea (HCU), High-Fat diet with Blanched Gongronema latifolium (HGB) and High-Fat Diet with Unblanched Gongronema latifolium (HGU). Seventy-five albino male rats (weighing 180–200 g) were used. The animals were divided into 15 groups of five albino rats each. Animals in Groups 1, 2 and 3 were fed with CD, HFD only and HFD with Atorvastin (5 mg/kg b.w), respectively. Animals in Groups 4, 5 and 6 were fed with 5, 10 and 15% HCB, respectively. Animals in Groups 7, 8 and 9 were fed with 5, 10 and 15% HCU, respectively, whereas animals in Groups 10, 11 and 12 were fed with 5, 10 and 15% HGB, respectively, and animals in Groups 13, 14 and 15 were fed with 5, 10 and 15% diet-inclusion of HGU, respectively. Findings The incorporation of the vegetal matter into the diet brought about a significant reduction (p = 0.05) in the activities of ALT, AST, CK and LDH when compared with HFD. However, the histological examination showed no pathological lesion, only at 15% inclusion of the vegetables. Originality/value The paper established that the incorporation of Celosia argentea and Gongronema latifolium into diet, most especially at 15% inclusion, may serve as functional food in the management of hyperlipidemia and associated complications.

Abstract:
Lately, matcha green tea has gained popularity as a beverage and food additive. It has proved to be effective in preventing obesity and related metabolic syndromes. However, the underlying mechanisms of its control effects against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are complicated and remain elusive. In the present study, we performed an in vivo experiment using male C57BL/6 mice fed with a high-fat diet and simultaneously treated with matcha for six weeks. Serum biochemical parameters, histological changes, lipid accumulation, inflammatory cytokines, and relevant indicators were examined. Dietary supplementation of matcha effectively prevented excessive accumulation of visceral and hepatic lipid, elevated blood glucose, dyslipidemia, abnormal liver function, and steatosis hepatitis. RNA sequencing analyses of differentially expressed genes in liver samples indicated that matcha treatment decreased the activity of lipid droplet-associated proteins and increased the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes, suggesting improved metabolic capacity and liver function. The current study provided evidence for new dietary strategies based on matcha supplementation to ameliorate lipotoxicity-induced obesity and NALFD.

Abstract:
We recently showed that the long-term in vivo administration of green tea catechin extract (GTE) resulted in hyperdynamic cardiomyocyte contractility. The present study investigates the mechanisms underlying GTE action in comparison to its major component, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), given at the equivalent amount that would be in the entirety of GTE. Twenty-six male Wistar rats were given 40 mL/day of a tap water solution with either standardized GTE or pure EGCG for 4 weeks. Cardiomyocytes were then isolated for the study. Cellular bioenergetics was found to be significantly improved in both GTE- and EGCG-fed rats compared to that in controls as shown by measuring the maximal mitochondrial respiration rate and the cellular ATP level. Notably, the improvement of mitochondrial function was associated with increased levels of oxidative phosphorylation complexes, whereas the cellular mitochondrial mass was unchanged. However, only the GTE supplement improved cardiomyocyte mechanics and intracellular calcium dynamics, by lowering the expression of total phospholamban (PLB), which led to an increase of both the phosphorylated-PLB/PLB and the sarco-endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase/PLB ratios. Our findings suggest that GTE might be a valuable adjuvant tool for counteracting the occurrence and/or the progression of cardiomyopathies in which mitochondrial dysfunction and alteration of intracellular calcium dynamics constitute early pathogenic factors.

Abstract:
Catechins, which are abundant in green tea, possess a variety of biologic actions, and their clinical application has been extensively investigated. In this study, we examined the effects of tea catechins and regular exercise on the aging-associated decline in physical performance in senescence-accelerated prone mice (SAMP1) and age-matched senescence-accelerated resistant mice (SAMR1). The endurance capacity of SAMR1 mice, measured as the running time to exhaustion, tended to increase over the 8-wk experimental period, whereas that of SAMP1 mice decreased by 17%. On the other hand, the endurance capacity of SAMP1 mice fed 0.35% (wt/wt) catechins remained at the initial level and was significantly higher than that of SAMP1 mice not fed catechins. In SAMP1 mice fed catechins and given exercise, oxygen consumption was significantly increased, and there was an increase in skeletal muscle fatty acid β-oxidation. The mRNA levels of mitochondria-related molecules, such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1, cytochrome c oxidase-II, III, and IV in skeletal muscle were also higher in SAMP1 mice given both catechins and exercise. Moreover, oxidative stress measured as thiobarbituric reactive substances was lower in SAMP1 groups fed catechins than in the SAMP1 control group. These results suggest that long-term intake of catechins, together with habitual exercise, is beneficial for suppressing the aging-related decline in physical performance and energy metabolism and that these effects are due, at least in part, to improved mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle.

Abstract:
The green alga Ulva fasciata Delile (Ulvaceae), after thawing from storage at −20oC, has been used to study the in vivo biosynthesis and release of lectins. The alga was made to resume viable growth by immersion in a PBS buffer, pH 7.4, containing 0.01% w/v sodium azide and irradiating with a halophosphate lamp. The growing alga readily took up 14C leucine, when this was added to the buffer, as seen by a decrease in a sample count rate of ~ 8000 cpm over a period of twenty minutes. The transfer of the radioactivity fed algae into fresh PBS buffer resulted in 14C labeled proteins being subsequently released into solution. As well as observing changes in levels of radioactivity, the release of proteins was also monitored by UV absorption at 280 nm. Both techniques indicated an initial steady release over the first twelve hours, followed by a slower approach to a plateau value. Transfer of the algae that had undergone an initial period of protein release into a subsequent second and third volume of fresh PBS buffer produced similar UV absorption profiles, but the total quantities of material released were reduced. Identification of the released proteins was obtained from their ability to agglutinate red blood cells, which was inhibited by L-fucose, and their electrophoretic mobilities when compared with earlier isolated samples of the U. fasciata lectin. The reference lectin was obtained by affinity chromatography, following the selective precipitation of the water soluble algal proteins with ammonium sulfate. We postulate that the observed release profiles support the previously suggested concept that lectins have the ability to function as protection agents for living marine algae.

Abstract:
The high number of tourists who come to visit during the holiday season comes to Samosir Island. However, the number of tourists who come to the island of Samosir and the number of accommodations available at this time have not been able to meet the high interest of visiting tourists. The design of the Tuk-Tuk Lakeside Lake Toba Resort is one way to help achieve the benefit of tourists visiting the current Samosir island for comfortable lodging facilities and still feel what it is like to return to nature. The research methodology begins with collecting data, studying literature, surveying the location of the research, and also designing problem-solving. In creating an object to be designed, the designer can carry out a variety of alternative design approaches, one of which is to approach the theme that will be used in the designation, Green Architecture. The selection of Green Architecture themes in buildings is considered capable of describing functions and describing culture. Approach to the idea that takes air circulation systems that do not use the air conditioner or ac that is applied to the main buildings of hotels, restaurants, and resorts. Air and contour on the land on the plains of the unspoiled island of Samosir can become local wisdom that can be utilized in designing Tuk-Tuk lakeside Danau Toba Resort.

Abstract:
We assessed the effect of ingestion of green tea (GT) extract along with a low-energy diet (LED) on resting energy expenditure (REE), substrate oxidation and body weight as GT has been shown to increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation in the short term in both animals and people. Forty-six overweight women (BMI 27·6 (sd 1·8) kg/m2) were fed in energy balance from day 1 to day 3, followed by a LED with GT (1125 mg tea catechins +225 mg caffeine/d) or placebo (PLAC) from day 4 to day 87. Caffeine intake was standardised to 300 mg/d. Energy expenditure was measured on days 4 and 32. Reductions in weight (4·19 (sd 2·0) kg PLAC, 4·21 (sd 2·7) kg GT), BMI, waist:hip ratio, fat mass and fat-free mass were not statistically different between treatments. REE as a function of fat-free mass and fat mass was significantly reduced over 32 d in the PLAC group (P<0·05) but not in the GT group. Dietary restraint increased over time (P<0·001) in both groups, whereas disinhibition and general hunger decreased (P<0·05). The GT group became more hungry over time and less thirsty, and showed increased prospective food consumption compared with PLAC (P<0·05). Taken together, the ingestion of GT along with a LED had no additional benefit for any measures of body weight or body composition. Although the decrease in REE as a function of fat-free mass and fat mass was not significant with GT treatment, whereas it was with PLAC treatment, no significant effect of treatment over time was seen, suggesting that a robust limitation of REE reduction during a LED was not achieved by GT.

Abstract:
The accuracy of energy differences calculated from first principles within the local density approximation (LDA) has been demonstrated for a large number of systems. Armed with these energy differences researchers are addressing questions of phase stability and structural relaxation. However, these techniques are very computationally intensive and are therefore not being used for the simulation of large complex systems. Many of the methods for solving the Kohn-Sham equations of the LDA rely on basis set methods for solution of the Schrodinger equation. An alternative approach is multiple scattering theory (MST). We feel that the locally exact solutions of the Schrodinger equation which are at the heart of the multiple scattering method give the method an efficiency which cannot be ignored in the search for methods with which to attack large systems. Furthermore, the analytic properties of the Green function which is determined directly in MST result in computational shortcuts.

Abstract:
This study was designed to investigate the ameliorating effect of methanolic extract of green walnut husk (GWH) in hypercholesterolemic rats. A total of thirty male Albino Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus domestica) were divided randomly into six equal groups. Group 1, negative control, fed on a standard rat diet whereas groups 2–6, hypercholesterolemic rats, fed a high-fat diet (1% cholesterol in a standard diet). Group 2, positive control, was left untreated, whereas the groups 3–5 treated orally with methanolic extract of GWH at 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg/day BW, respectively. Group 6, treatment control, received atorvastatin intraperitoneally at a dosage rate of 0.8 mg/kg/day. The treatment lasted for 84 days. Lipid profiles, biomarkers for liver and kidney functions, some hematological parameters, and liver histopathological assessment were performed. No significant variation was observed on lipid profile values after 42 days of GWH intake; while after 84 days, there was significant reduction (P<0.05) in cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides and significant increase (P<0.05) in HDL. On day 42, the GWH intake revealed no ameliorating effect on ALT, AST, ALP, serum creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN); while on day 84, the GWH at 400 and 800 mg/kg BW reduced liver injury enzymes and serum creatinine levels but not the BUN. The GWH showed no significant effect on RBC, HGH, HCV, MCH, and MCHC counts; however, the WBCs count of all experimental groups showed significant (P<0.05) increase when compared to negative control. In comparison with other experimental groups, the 800 mg/kg GWH group and the treatment control group exhibited significant decrease (P<0.05) in HCT. The histopathological findings of the liver showed that the 800 mg/kg BW dosage rate of GWH was efficient in ameliorating the adverse tissue changes noticed in the positive control and other experimental groups. It can be inferred that GWH at dosage rate 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg BW have a potential antidyslipidemic effect in dose and period dependent manner. Further investigation to identify the safety of GWH for long standing using against hyperlipidemic patients is required.

Abstract:
Bacillus licheniformis (B. licheniformis) is a safe probiotic that can promote animal growth and inhibit pathogenic bacteria. This study aimed to assess the effects of B. licheniformis, one green feed additive, on growth performance, diarrhea incidence, immune function, fecal volatile fatty acids, and microflora structure in weaned piglets. Weaned piglets (n = 180) were randomly divided into three treatment groups and fed a basal diet and a basal diet supplemented with 500 mg B. licheniformis per kg and 1000 mg B. licheniformis per kg, respectively. The dietary 500 mg/kg B. licheniformis inclusion improved the average daily gain, reduced diarrhea incidence, and strengthened antioxidant capacity. Piglets supplemented with B. licheniformis presented increased serum immunoglobulins (IgA, IgM) compared to the CON group. Meanwhile, the expression of anti-inflammation factors was increased, and the levels of pro-inflammation factors were reduced after B. licheniformis administration. Moreover, the levels of volatile fatty acids, including acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, isobutyric acid, and isovaleric acid, in the BL500 and BL1000 groups were increased compared with the CON group, and the concentration of valeric acid was higher in the BL500 group. Furthermore, piglets in the 500 mg/kg B. licheniformis addition group significantly altered fecal microbiota by increasing Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 and Oscillospira. In conclusion, dietary B. licheniformis relieved diarrhea, enhanced antioxidant capacity, immunity function, and fecal microflora structure in weaned pigs.

Abstract:
Urban communities can feel more applicable benefits in urban environmental planning as part of their daily activities. Urban public open spaces have not all considered the quality of the environment. Initial observations show that the utilization of public open space is not yet optimal from environmental and social aspects. Manado City Public open space is a place of interaction and recreation for the community, but currently little attention is paid to ecological or environmental functions and the quality of the landscape. With the observed background, this study aims to examine the city's public open spaces that can improve their functions and quality, by providing ecological protection and aesthetic quality of the landscape. This study evaluates the performance of open spaces (Patches Landscape) that support the sustainability of recent urban environment. The approach in this study in addition to sustainable cities, sustainable landscapes also integrate environmental psychology, aesthetics and people's perceptions of urban open spaces. This research also looks at the historical aspects of the community that will give identity to the planned open spaces, and their impact on improving the ecology and quality of open spaces. This research is conducted in Manado City, Indonesia. The method used in this research is a mix-method approach using Trivalent concept. The concept is to evaluate the tree-in-one main dimensions namely ecological, socio-cultural and aesthetic in landscape planning and design. The analysis of Landscape Quality Indicators is used to establish the concept of an engineering and spatial-based urban public open space design model recommendation.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to develop a novel and practical series-parallel inventory-redundancy allocation system in a green supply chain including a single manufacturer and multiple retailers operating in several positions without any conflict of interests. The manufacturer first produces multi-product and then dispatches them to the retailers at different wholesale prices based on a common replenishment cycle policy. In contrast, the retailers sell the purchased products to customers at different retail prices. In this way, the manufacturer encounters a redundancy allocation problem (RAP), in which the solution subsequently enhances system production reliability. Furthermore, to emphasize on global warming and human health concerns, this paper pays attention both the tax cost of industrial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of all produced products and the limitation for total GHG emissions. Design/methodology/approach The manufacturer intends not only to maximize the total net profit but also to minimize the mean time to failure of his production system using a RAP. To achieve these objectives, the max-min approach associated with the solution method known as the interior point method is utilized to maximize the minimum (the worst) value of the objective functions. Finally, numerical experiments are presented to further demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methodology. Sensitivity analysis on the green supply chain approach is also performed to obtain more insight. Findings The computational results showed that increasing the number of products and retailers might lead into a substantial increase in the total net profit. This indicated that the manufacturer would feel adding a new retailer to the green supply chain strongly. Moreover, an increase in the number of machines provides significant improvement in the reliability of the production system. Furthermore, the results of the performed sensitivity analysis on the green approach indicated that increasing the number of machines has a substantial impact on both the total net profit and the total tax cost. In addition, not only the proposed green supply chain was more efficient than the supply chain without green but also the proposed green supply chain was very sensitive to the tax cost of GHG emission rather than the number of machines. Originality/value In summary, the motivations are as follows: the development of a bi-objective series-parallel inventory-RAP in a green supply chain; proposing a hybrid inventory-RAP; and considering the interior point solution method. The novel method comes from both theoretical and experimental techniques. The paper also has industrial applications. The advantage of using the proposed approach is to generate additional opportunities and cost effectiveness for businesses and companies that operate utilizing the green supply chain under an inventory model.

Abstract:
Sustainable rainwater management is made possible, among others, by nationwide and local policies and regulations that create economic incentives. This article analyzes how existing economic instruments in Poland motivate property owners to make investments that manage rainwater on their own properties. Two types of investments were analyzed: bioswales as one of the lowest-cost green infrastructure measures in construction and operation, and the rainwater harvesting solution that uses rainwater to irrigate greenery. Simulation of this type of investment was undertaken in response to existing economic incentives—obtainable discounts of national and municipal rainwater drainage fees and municipal subsidy programs for rainwater management from three cities of different sizes selected from the Greater Poland province. Analyses were carried out for three types of development: different intensity, sealing of the land, and number of residents. The financial profitability of the investment was evaluated by determining the payback period, NPV, and benefit–cost ratio, taking into account the possible discounts in fees and investment subsidies in the variant analyses. It was shown that the incentive function of national fees for rainwater drainage is low, and that the incentive function of municipal fees and subsidies is higher, depending on the design of the fee (rates and discounts) and subsidy (directions and level of subsidies) systems.

Abstract:
A brief review of derivation of two groups of approximate closed form expressions for the electrical scalar potential (ESP) Green functions that originates from the current of the point ground electrode (PGE) in the presence of a spherical ground inhomogenity, are presented in this paper. The PGE is fed by a very low frequency periodic current through a thin isolated conductor. One of approximate solutions is proposed in this paper. Known exact solutions that have parts in a form of infinite series sums are also given in this paper. Here, the exact solution is solely reorganized in order to facilitate comparison to the closed form solutions, and to estimate the error introduced by the approximate solutions. Finally, error estimation is performed comparing the results for the electrical scalar potential obtained applying the approximate expressions and accurate calculations. This is illustrated by numerous numerical experiments. .

Abstract:
Park is a green open space widely used by the community to carry out various activities ranging from recreation, playing, sports, and other passive activities. Current weather conditions are often uncertain. This makes people inconvenient when it rains suddenly, especially when outdoors such as in parks. Because if they don't immediately take shelter when it rains, it can make the body sick, besides that, rainwater can damage the non-waterproof gadgets they carry. In other conditions, when the weather is bright, and the sun is shining hot, it can make people feel hot and lazy to do outdoor activities in the park. Therefore, an automatic umbrella tool was made that functions as a shelter in the garden. In this tool, there is a light sensor module and also a rain sensor, which is controlled with the Arduino Uno microcontroller as an input data processor and an L298N motor driver, which functions to regulate the speed and direction of the DC motor rotation (to the right and left) as an umbrella drive. When the motor rotates to the right, the umbrella will open, while when the motor rotates to the left, the umbrella will close again.

Abstract:
Achieving multi-color luminescence with a single atomic center in transition metal complexes is a challenge. In this work, luminescent materials with tunable emission properties were realized by complexation between aluminum (III) ions with the ligands 3-hydroxyflavone (3-HF) and 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline (DCHQ). Aluminum (III) complexes with a single ligand emitted blue from 3-HF and green from DCHQ. High quantum yields (QYs) of 29.42% and 37.00% were also obtained, respectively. DFT calculations revealed details of the photophysical properties of the complexes. Correspondingly, cyan light emission was obtained if these two complexes were mixed together, from which the emission wavelength was located at 470 nm and the QY was 20.52%, under 290 nm excitation. More importantly, the cyan light emitted by the mixtures had selective sensitivity to different metal ions, resulting in either quenching the fluorescence (in the case of Fe3+) or enhancing the fluorescence (in the case of In3+). The fluorescence enhancement effect of In3+ on metal complexes has not been previously reported, neither for transition metal nor lanthanide ions. The linear quenching behavior of Fe3+ functions in the 50–700 μM concentration range, and the linear enhancement behavior of In3+ is demonstrated in the 300–800 mM concentration range.
