Abstract:
Dedicated to the medina in the Mediterranean space, this book is essentially based on detailed historical and photographic research into the characteristics of city design and its evolution, as well as some case studies from direct experience. The main objective of the present study consists of its documentary and evocative value, without forgetting the analysis of the multiple architectural spaces with monumental complexes of extraordinary cultural importance arranged according to precise hierarchies and specific uses. The research summarises the different experiences from this immense Arab-Muslim architectural heritage and its urban evolution. These aspects are expressed both by the large number of case studies (from Cordoba to Palermo, passing through Fez, Séfrou, Marrakech and Tunis) as well as by the quality of the built spaces as a whole. The several contributions show an urban framework that is still legible and significant, consisting of grids of houses with forms, structures and functions that show a concentration of spaces, places and monuments stratified over time and developed in the Mediterranean countries, producing extremely diverse situations.

Abstract:
Nivkh (Paleosiberian group), spoken on the lower reaches of the Amur River and on Sakhalin island in Siberia by a few hundred speakers in four main varieties, but rapidly dying out, is a polysynthetic head-marking but configurational SOV language, with defective polypersonalism, noun incorporation, verb root serialization, and complex noun forms. Its dominant structural principle and characteristic design is dependent-head-synthesis, with dependents lexically head-marked and still referentially active. Nivkh displays compositional polysynthesis with a mixed internal structure, as the suffixal domain of a word-form may be described by a template, whereas the pre-root domain is scope-ordered due to dependent chaining. The evolutionary path of complex forms is best conceived of as coalescence of formerly adjacent words. Morphophonemic processes at the word-internal morpheme boundaries, especially consonant dissimilation and assimilation, and bound allomorphs prove the wordhood of the complexes. Non-root bound morphemes encode modalities, degree, scalar, and focus operators and phase of action.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the complete quadrilateral line arrangement, and especially its relationship with the space of regular points of the system of partial differential equations defining the Appell hypergeometric function. Appell introduced four series F1, F2, F3, F4 in two complex variables, each of which generalizes the classical Gauss hypergeometric series and satisfies its own system of two linear second order partial differential equations. The solution spaces of the systems corresponding to the series F2, F3, F4 all have dimension 4, whereas that of the system corresponding to the series F1 has dimension 3. This chapter focuses on the F1-system whose monodromy group, under certain conditions, acts on the complex 2-ball. It first considers the action of S5 on the blown-up projective plane before turning to Appell hypergeometric functions, arithmetic monodromy groups, and an invariant known as the signature.

The science of complex systems is not an offspring of physics, biology, or the socialsciences, but a unique mix of all three. By recalling what these diciplines are, wedevelop an intuitive feel for complex systems and for how this science differs from otherdisciplines. This chapter aims to show that the science of complex systems combinesphysics, biology, and the social sciences in a unique blend that is a new discipline in itsown right. We review a few classical concepts of the science of complex systems andemphasize the importance of co-evolution of states of components and their interaction. The chapter clarifies the structure of the book.

Abstract:
This chapter pays tribute to the instrument's ethnic American roots. It discusses the accordion's ongoing importance in particular regions of the country—particularly the Upper Midwest—and in several ethnic styles of music: Slovenian and “Dutchman” style polka in the Midwest and Upper Peninsula and Valtaro musette in Manhattan's Italian neighborhoods. These communities generated many accomplished accordionists, a few of whom became popular “crossover” entertainers with international careers. These worlds predated and coexisted alongside the “accordion industrial complex,” described in the previous chapter, but few eminent accordion teachers valued or drew on any of these folk traditions. The chapter also sets the stage for an examination on the later revival of the accordion through a discussion of conflict and continuity between the accordion's role in “folk communities” and the accordion industrial complex.

Abstract:
Senior management professionals have overall responsibility for business services functions, such as Finance, Human Resources, and Marketing. To perform their role effectively they need to develop a very close working relationship with the senior leadership dyad and engage in a complex range of political activities. To bring about the change they have been tasked with achieving, they must become consummate politicians, displaying a range of political skills, from networking ability and interpersonal influence to social astuteness and apparent sincerity. Through a complex set of political activities, management professionals work with the Managing and Senior Partners to help shift the balance of power, away from senior fee-earning professionals and towards the leadership of the organization, without the fee-earning professionals necessarily recognizing or accepting that this change is occurring. This chapter, therefore, shows how it is possible for outsiders to lead discreetly.

Harris, Eirik Lang. The Shenzi Fragments. Columbia University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.7312/columbia/9780231177665.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Shenzi Fragments is the first complete translation in any Western language of the extant work of Shen Dao (350–275 B.C.E.). Though his writings have been recounted and interpreted in many texts, particularly in the work of Xunzi and Han Fei, very few Western scholars have encountered the political philosopher’s original, influential formulations. This volume contains both a translation and an analysis of the Shenzi Fragments. It explains their distillation of the potent political theories circulating in China during the Warring States period, along with their seminal relationship to the Taoist and Legalist traditions and the philosophies of the Lüshi Chunqiu and the Huainanzi. These fragments outline a rudimentary theory of political order modeled on the natural world that recognizes the role of human self-interest in maintaining stable rule. Casting the natural world as an independent, amoral system, Shen Dao situates the source of moral judgment firmly within the human sphere, prompting political philosophy to develop in realistic directions. Harris’s sophisticated translation is paired with commentary that clarifies difficult passages and obscure references. For sections open to multiple interpretations, he offers resources for further research and encourages readers to follow their own path to meaning, much as Shen Dao intended. The Shenzi Fragments offers English-language readers a chance to grasp the full significance of Shen Dao’s work among the pantheon of Chinese intellectuals.

Abstract:
Cancer treatment has become increasingly complex with the rapid development of new therapies and treatment modalities. Guidelines for optimum cancer treatment are produced by several organizations, but ensuring that the patient receives the treatment requires both provider awareness and patient support to follow a complex treatment plan. An individual diagnosed with cancer must simultaneously come to terms with the diagnosis, make difficult shared decisions about treatment with his or her provider, and commence treatment in a matter of a few days or weeks. Ensuring optimum treatment is an increasingly complex process that involves multiple people and steps. Well-documented disparities exist in the receipt of and adherence to appropriate treatment by demographic and social factors, such as age, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geography. This case study provides an example of how the process of providing optimum cancer treatment may be improved through a technology-enhanced navigation program.

This chapter assembles a few standard definitions, fixes some notation, and reviews a few of the results about buildings and Moufang polygons. It also summarizes the basic facts about Coxeter groups and buildings, including the fundamental properties of roots, residues, apartments, and projection maps. The chapter defines a Moufang building as spherical, thick, irreducible and of rank at least 2, and a Bruhat-Tits building as a thick irreducible affine building whose building at infinity is Moufang. Furthermore, it presents a fundamental result of Tits: that an irreducible thick spherical building of rank at least 3 satisfies the Moufang condition as do all the irreducible residues of rank at least 2 of such a building. Finally, it considers a simplicial complex, the dimension of which is its cardinality minus one.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the changing functions and organization of Parliament in areas that have received less attention in existing scholarship. The ‘rise of democracy’ was not the only imperative driving Parliament’s almost complete remodelling as an institution during the period under study. Broader cultural factors also played their part, as a number of innovative studies examining the environment of Parliament from the perspective of architectural space, historic identity, parliamentary debate, scientific inquiry, and the concept of time (to name but a few) have sought to indicate. Gaps still remain, however, particularly in terms of work on the House of Lords and the development of Parliament’s legislative and scrutiny functions. Drawing on some of these historical approaches, and proposing a few new ones, this chapter explores the changing power structures and operation of Parliament in two key areas: the business of law-making and the relationship between its two houses.

We also discuss the polarisation properties of the condensate and the superfluid phase transitions for polarised exciton-polaritons. We briefly address the polarization multistability and switching in polariton lasers. Finally, the optical spin-Hall and spin-Meissner effects are described.

Cancer is a disease of the genes. In the last two decades new technologies have allowed us to interrogate the genome more efficiently and faster. This has led to new therapies and improved understanding of cancers. It is clear the few cancers are caused by just one gene defect and in these rare cases the defective gene or its product is a target for therapeutic intervention. The bigger challenge now is to use this paradigm against multi-genic cancers which are far more common and more complex in their genetic makeup.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses light in Newtonian theory. Astronomy (and physics in general) is certainly not a complete science without a theory of light. However, the nature of light and its kinematical properties were not completely understood until the advent of Maxwell’s theory, special and general relativity, and quantum field theory. The answers to these questions provided by Newtonian theory were only partial and sometimes even contradictory. Thus this chapter seeks to present a few aspects of this topic, such as the influences of gravity on light, stellar aberrations, and wave propagation. It also studies the Fizeau and Michelson–Morley experiments.

Abstract:
Western Apache belongs to the Southern or Apachean branch of the Athabaskan language family, (Nadene phylum) and is spoken by ca. 6,000 people in central and eastern Arizona, USA. Since there are very few children acquiring the language, it is endangered. The Western Apache noun word is morphologically simple, but the verb word is unusually complex. It can be characterized morphologically by what Sapir called “interrupted synthesis”, that is, a complex interdigitation of functionally diverse prefixal elements: inflectional prefixes, derivational prefixes, and thematic prefixes. Furthermore, the Athabaskan polysynthetic word is also characterized by extensive fusion or contraction of short prefix elements, prefix slippage, and haplology. As a result, the Athabaskan verb word is often between two and four syllables long, which is quite short when compared to words in more “orthodox” polysynthetic language families (Woodbury, Chapter 30, this volume) such as Eskimo-Aleut, Chukotko-Kamchatkan, and Wakashan.

Abstract:
This article deals with complex networks, and in particular small world and scale free networks. Various networks exhibit the small world phenomenon, including social networks and gene expression networks. The local ordering property of small world networks is typically associated with regular networks such as a 2D square lattice. The small world phenomenon can be observed in most scale free networks, but few small world networks are scale free. The article first provides a brief background on small world networks and two models of scale free graphs before describing the replica method and how it can be applied to calculate the spectral densities of the adjacency matrix and Laplacian matrix of a scale free network. It then shows how the effective medium approximation can be used to treat networks with finite mean degree and concludes with a discussion of the local properties of random matrices associated with complex networks.

Abstract:
Larvae of many marine invertebrates must capture and ingest particulate food in order to develop to metamorphosis. These larvae use only a few physical processes to capture particles, but implement these processes using diverse morphologies and behaviors. Detailed understanding of larval feeding mechanism permits investigators to make predictions about feeding performance, including the size spectrum of particles larvae can capture and the rates at which they can capture them. In nature, larvae are immersed in complex mixtures of edible particles of varying size, density, flavor, and nutritional quality, as well as many particles that are too large to ingest. Concentrations of all of these components vary on fine temporal and spatial scales. Mechanistic models linking larval feeding mechanism to performance can be combined with data on food availability in nature and integrated into broader bioenergetics models to yield increased understanding of the biology of larvae in complex natural habitats.

Miscarea contine dimensiuni infinite, a le pune in cuvinte inseamna a risca…

Abstract:
Primary generalized epilepsies account for 30% of all epilepsies. These age-related epilepsies without structural brain lesions and normal development have a high heritability. Based on the main seizure type and their age of onset, four main subsyndromes are recognized. Rare autosomal dominant families carry mutations in a few genes involved in ion channel functions, whereas common genes are yet to be discovered. The complex inheritance involving multiple genes is the major limiting factor preventing to uncover their genetic architecture. Understanding genetic determinants is the key to unraveling the neurobiology and to improve therapies for these disorders.

Genomics has transformed the biological sciences. From epidemiology and medicine to evolution and forensics, the ability to determine an organism’s complete genetic makeup has changed the way science is done and the questions that can be asked of it. Genomics: A Very Short Introduction explores the science of genomics and its rapidly expanding toolbox. Sequencing a human genome can now take only a few days and those of simple bacteria and viruses, a matter of hours. The resulting sequences can be used to better understand our biology in health and disease and to ‘personalize’ medicine. Abstract:
The archaeology of Sardinia is characterized by complex architecture and a rich figurine tradition. The visual narrative is a focal point of life in the pre-Nuragic and Nuragic phases, and a key element of ideology. Figurines first appear in the Middle Neolithic. They become an integral part of cosmology until the Early Copper Age, after which there is a period where figuration (but not representation) is no longer in use. Figurines reappear in the Nuragic period. At this time they are almost exclusively made of metal, with a few stone figurines from Monte Prama. The secondary agency of bronze figurines (bronzetti) is a powerful element in the performance of social relations. This chapter reassesses the role of figurines by (a) situating them within their social contexts in increasingly complex societies; (b) tracing the nature and timings of their appearance and disappearances; and (c) examining the role of visual imagery in establishing and maintaining dominant symbol systems.

Abstract:
Annihilation and dislocation represent the “ideal outcome” in military strategy: a swift victory with as few casualties and economic costs as possible. Annihilation seeks to reduce an adversary’s physical capacity to fight, usually in a single battle or “lightning” campaign, such as Hannibal’s victory against the Romans in Cannae (216 BCE). Dislocation endeavors to reduce an opponent’s willingness to fight by causing confusion or disorientation through unexpected maneuvers or the use of surprise, such as Hitler’s blitzkrieg conquests in the Second World War. Annihilation and dislocation strategies can be considered high risk, high reward. They both require military forces trained well enough, and led effectively enough, to execute complex maneuvers.

Abstract:
Genes play a fundamental role in the regulation and evolution of most phenotypic traits, including behavior. This chapter focuses on the genetics of reproductive behavior in insects.More specifically, the distribution of genetic effects for reproductive behavior in insects (many genes of small effect or few genes of large effect) is examined, as well as how these genes interact with each other, with genes for other important traits, and with the abiotic and social environments. The chapter concludes by discussing the wider implications of this complex genetic architecture to the evolution of reproductive behaviors in insects and outline some key directions for future research on this topic.

Abstract:
Management of anticoagulation, is a common practice. This chapter discusses best approaches, heparin choices, and safety issues. Anticoagulation is required in immobilized patients in the neurosciences intensive care unit to prevent deep venous thrombosis and the more consequential pulmonary embolus. There are very few strong indications for anticoagulation in ischemic stroke and exceptions are discussed. Reversal of anticoagulation is also needed in some patients and certainly in patients with recent significant trauma or spontaneous hemorrhages. Current reversal protocols require intravenous vitamin K, fresh-frozen plasma, and more often, prothrombin complex concentrate. Reversal of the effect of the direct oral anticoagulants is more difficult but options are discussed.

Abstract:
This chapter explores German–Polish film relations. World War II created a caesura between Germany and Poland. For years, the complex connectivity that existed in the region was broken and instead dissociation characterized relations. The chapter examines the tentative conciliation of the two regions, focusing on documentary film. It begins with the work of a few documentarists who headed east at the time of the Wende, the moment of the collapse of the East Block. In bucking trends and heading east they captured images that ultimately speak more to the future of Europe. They not only documented important moments of “first contact,” they literally envisioned relationships that are still developing today.

Abstract:
This chapter details the resistance of Chica da Silva. Chica was an enslaved woman born in eighteenth-century Brazil who obtained manumission and socioeconomic ascendance through her involvement with a very wealthy Portuguese man who was sent to the interior of the State of Minas Gerais to oversee the exploration of diamond mines. Chica guaranteed her survival and the well-being of her offspring through her association with the diamond contractor. Faced with few alternatives for economic stability, her association with a “benefactor” might still be interpreted as a choice to commodify her body. However, Chica's resistance to subjugation warrants a more complex assessment.

Macauley, Robert C. Death and Organ Donation (DRAFT). Edited by Robert C. Macauley. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199313945.003.0016.

Abstract:
The concept of death by neurological criteria (i.e., brain death) was formulated in 1968 to describe a state of complete and irreversible loss of brain function. While there remain philosophical debates about the validity of the concept, it is enshrined in state law—with a few notable limitations—and impacts both the role of continued somatic support as well as making possible the donation of vital organs. In light of the shortage of organs available for transplantation, greater attention has recently been paid to death by circulatory criteria procurement protocols. One significant source of disagreement is the duration of pulselessness required to declare death and whether circulation needs to be irreversibly ceased or only permanently so.

Abstract:
Anaesthesia for children is tempered by changes that occur during both growth and development. Drug dose is affected by size and clearance maturation processes as well as the changing body composition that occurs with age. All organ systems undergo these maturation changes and most are complete within the first few years of life. Normal physiological variables in infancy and childhood are quite different from adults. The central nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems are particularly important. Cerebral immaturity and plasticity impacts sensitivity to drugs, pain responses, and behaviour and increases potential harm from apoptosis with anaesthesia. The heart undergoes a transition from fetal to adult circulation during the first few weeks of life. Undiagnosed congenital defects are not uncommon. The neonate is very susceptible to conditions that trigger an increase in pulmonary vascular resistance, with reversion to fetal circulatory patterns. Respiratory anatomy and mechanics affect the propensity to apnoea, airway maintenance, artificial ventilation modalities, uptake of inhalational agents, and tracheal tube sizes. Metabolic rate and oxygen requirements increase with decreasing age. This physiology influences diverse aspects that include the rate of desaturation during apnoea, hypoglycaemia during starvation, cardiac output, drug metabolism, fluid requirements, and heat production or loss.

Peris, Tara S., and John Piacentini. Helping Families Manage Childhood OCD. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med:psych/9780199357604.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Childhood obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex condition that is often accompanied by high levels of family stress and strain. Families of youth with OCD face a unique set of difficulties in that they often are intimately involved in their children’s symptoms. This pattern of responding to OCD, frequently referred to as accommodation, comes in many forms, and for most families, it occurs daily. Research suggests that accommodation is accompanied by increased levels of family distress, anxiety, and conflict, which, when high enough, can undermine successful OCD treatment. Although evidence-based treatments exist for childhood OCD, few protocols offer strategies for treating these more complex family presentations. This program offers an empirically supported approach for managing childhood OCD complicated by poor family functioning. It identifies specific family features that may contribute to treatment nonresponse in childhood OCD, and provides clinicians with an innovative set of strategies for addressing them. By focusing on emotion-regulation strategies and family-problem-solving exercises, families learn to troubleshoot difficult OCD episodes in an effective and supportive manner.

Abstract:
The EHRA Book of Interventional Electrophysiology is the second official textbook of European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA). Using clinical cases to encourage practical learning, this book assists electrophysiologists and device specialists in tackling both common and unusual situations that they may encounter during daily practice. Covering electrophysiological procedures for supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, the book enables specialists to deepen their understanding of complex concepts and techniques. Tracings are presented with multiple choice questions to allow readers to hone their skills for interpreting challenging cases and to prepare for the EHRA certification exam in electrophysiology. Cases include orthodromic atrioventricular re-entrant tachycardia, pulmonary vein isolation, ventricular tachycardia ablation, and atypical left atrial flutter, to name a few.

Kaldellis, Anthony. Byzantine Historical Writing, 500–920. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199236428.003.0011.

Abstract:
This chapter describes how the timeline of Byzantine historical writing can be divided into three 140-year periods: first, from AD 500–640, the end of late antiquity, when historiography flourished in many genres; second, from 640–780, when Byzantium struggled to resist Arab conquest and few surviving texts were produced; and finally, from 780–920, an age of recovery for the state and literature, when older traditions were resynthesized and the foundations for new developments were laid. Primarily, the society of the Eastern Empire was mostly Greek speaking, Christian, and specifically Roman in its political or national consciousness. The ‘usable past’ available to historians was therefore complex, consisting of incommensurate components that defined different sites of the culture.
