Full textThis study aims to investigate mating preferences among Masters degree students of the University of Milano—Bicocca. A full factorial survey design was set up by defining fictive profiles (vignettes) of potential partners with a set of biological (age, height, facial beauty), cultural (religiosity and educational level) and socioeconomic traits (wealth and career prospects). All attributes are expressed in three categories, apart from age in two. Vignettes present a face picture (previously selected based on attractiveness level) and all the other traits are listed schematically. All of the whole fictive population of potential partners (N=1458) is submitted to the evaluation of a sample of respondents. Vignettes are identical for men and women respondents apart from the potential partner sex, expressed in the picture. Thus, the population of vignettes is doubled, one for men and one for women. Through an online survey, 243 female and 243 male students – all Italian, Caucasian, born between 1995 and 1997, cisgender and heterosexual -- are tasked to rate a block of six random profiles each with a number between 0 and 10. Data on demographics, religiosity and values of gender egalitarianism are also collected. I conduct multilevel analysis to estimate the causal impact of each trait category on the female and male ratings, while accounting for the correlated error terms for the ratings of each block of profiles. Thus, the average causal effects of each trait category are provided along with the average marginal effect of being a male and a female rater for each trait category. Moreover, I estimate the average causal effects on female and male ratings of age, height, educational level, wealth and career prospects for each level of profiles’ facial beauty. Again, differences in average causal effects between sexes are provided along with differences within sex. Finally, I divide the male and the female samples according to their socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds to investigate differences in mating preferences within each sex.

Full textA latent trait is an unobservable psychological attribute of an individual. A common way to measure it relies on the use of questionnaires, which collect person’s responses to test items and calculate a score representing the underlying latent trait. We analysed data collected among health care workers (HCWs) who faced COVID-19 pandemic and whose psychological wellbeing was evaluated through psychometric scales (GHQ-12, IES-r, GAD-7). Classical test theory (CTT) and item response theory (IRT) represent two different measurement frameworks. Starting from a series of clinical questions arising from a specific medical environment, objectives of this work were to explore the clinical implication of the tests’ outcome, performed through risk factor analysis for psychological impairment on a sample of 990 HCWs, and to evaluate the structure of the scales intended as measurement tools. We provided demonstration of the utility of IRT as compared with CTT-based method through the analysis of General Health Questionnaire – 12 (GHQ-12 questionnaire), a valid and reliable tool widely used to measure mental health. IRT-based techniques enable us to delve in several areas of interest of GHQ-12 questionnaire. Through the multidimensional version of IRT models we assess its dimensionality, finding that HCWs' psychological wellbeing was affected by general discomfort and stress together with a strong feeling of uselessness and inability to make decisions. Differential item functioning (DIF) detection performed with IRT investigated possible differences in responses between subjected directly or indirectly involved with COVID-19 patients and between workers enrolled before or after vaccination campaign, showing how their psychological status was affected by such circumstances. The discrete version of IRT (based on latent class analysis) allowed to determine how some response pattern may predict individual’s outcome of psychological wellbeing evaluation which consisted in three steps. Lastly, we explored the issue of atypical response pattern detection applying Forward Search algorithm to Rasch model.

Full textFactorization models are a mathematical representation of multidimensional data objects as a collection of simpler components. For instance, a matrix can be characterized as a sum of latent rank one components. Factor models are commonly used across a variety of disciplines to deal with data sets whereby a large number of observed variables is thought to reflect a smaller number of latent variables. However, it can be challenging to infer the relative impact of the different components as well as the number of components. To address this issue, it has become popular to rely on over-fitted factorization models that avoid strict constraints on either the number of factors and the ordering of the data. In the Bayesian framework, increasing shrinkage priors on latent elements have been proposed, allowing the introduction of infinitely many factors, albeit with impact decreasing with the component index, such that the unnecessary ones can be adaptively removed by increasingly shrinking their coefficients close to zero as the component index increases. These flexible approaches are usually named infinite factorization models. This thesis aims to provide an overview on infinite factorization models, presenting the state of the art, discussing the limitations of the current models, and gradually composing a general Bayesian infinite factorization framework that includes novel methods to address such deficiencies. In particular, we consider the role of sparsity in the latent low-rank elements, as being crucial to improve the inference and facilitate interpretation. Firstly, we focus on the effect of the sparsity induced by the usual approximation of the infinite model through a truncated version to facilitate the posterior inference. In this regard, it is fundamental to carefully assess how the truncation criterion affects the inference performance and the factor model representation. We propose a novel truncation criterion that relates the level of truncation to the factor contribution to the global data variability, allowing one to easily calibrate the algorithm's parameters. Secondly, we careful investigate the role of local sparsity within the low-rank latent elements by introducing a new general class of infinite factorization models. In this framework, we provide theoretical support to verify desirable shrinkage properties of the prior. The main novelty of the proposed class of models lies on the dependence of the local sparse pattern of the latent elements on auxiliary information which is supposed to inform on the similarity among variables, that correspond to columns of the data matrix. This structure enables us to fill a key gap of the current infinite factor models that do not allow the accommodation for grouped variables and other non-exchangeable structures. We also propose extending this class to the more general class of matrix decomposition models. Symmetrically to the use of the exogenous information about variables, the matrix decomposition model also embeds auxiliary information about the row entities of the data matrix. A novel estimation algorithm inspired by boosting approaches is designed, overcoming the computational limits of the current Markov chain Monte Carlo approaches and the non-identifiability issue which characterizes all the over-fitted factorization models. Practical gains with respect to the current state of art are shown in simulation studies and discussed in real data applications, further illustrating benefits in terms of parameter estimations and model interpretation. Football player tracking data represent the common thread of the thesis. Thoughtful insights and representations are provided, sheding ligth on the potential of our approach. However, the generality of the proposed framework is expected to impact many other application fields.
