Full textOverweight and obesity are conditions in sharp increase in populations around the world, in all age groups and represent one of the most serious public health problems today. Obesity is associated with a significant increase in morbidity and mortality for a long series of diseases. The main complications are represented by cardiovascular disease, often associated with diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia, in the contest of the "metabolic syndrome". The global increase of obesity problem is due first of all to unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles too. There are other elements, as psychological or socio-economic aspects, which can affect normal relationship with food. For these reasons, we have studied obesity as a multifactorial disease, relating it to physical, psychological and socio-economic aspects. We have analyzed a sample of 100 Italian adult individuals of both sexes, over 60 years: we recorded weight, height and BMI, and we provided an assessment of aspects of lifestyle, psychosocial, economic and demographic conditions, using specific self-administered questionnaires. The results show that obese individuals tend to have more complex psychological profiles, more abundant food consumption, less time spent for physical activity and more hours of sleep during the day than normal-weight subjects. In addition, it was found that the BMI is inversely related to the level of education and the socio-economic profile. In conclusion, we wanted to confirm that overweight and obesity are multifactorial conditions. The hope is that public and private entities, considered the influence and costs of the problem on national health systems, may implement planned strategies against obesity, providing a multidisciplinary approach to its prevention and treatment.
