Full textMarine shaft lines undergo complex cyclic loadings. In order to characterize these structures in fatigue, two complementary objectives are achieved. Firstly, the marine shaft’s loads are characterized in order to identify relevant fatigue cycles. During this step, an original parametric fatigue design method is implemented. This method is based on the definition of an equivalent load considering multiaxiality, variability, non-proportionality and mean stress. This method allows to distinguish two damage modes with a mode associated with the established cyclic regime of rotary bending and a mode associated with the ship’s maneuvers. Secondly, a rapid characterization method is implemented to characterize in fatigue the marine shafts’ steels for a large number of loading configurations. The method is based on a model which enables fatigue identification behaviors from self-heating measurements. The steels of the study are characterized in tension-torsion for various configurations of mean stress and nonproportionality of the loading. In this context, the notion of iso-self-heating surfaces is introduced. It allows, for a specimen, to model the elastoplastic and dissipative behavior of the material in the dedicated stress space. Their use makes it possible to define a multiscale fatigue criterion based on the invariants of the stress tensor. In the study, a modeling of the behavior of the material is proposed for very low amplitude loads (VHCF) exhibiting a strong difference in dissipation compared to the regime of higher amplitudes (i.e. HCF domain)

Full textThe objective of the work presented here is to elaborate a numerical model which can predict the thenmal behaviour and the efficiency of power gearing transmission. The thenmal networks method has been used. This method consists in dividing the geared unit into isothenmal elements and connecting these elements by thenmal resistances which depend on the kind of heat transfer encountered (conduction, convection, radiation). Seme elements of the network represent heat sources and the heat generated is linked to power losses which occur in a gearing transmission. The following sources of power lasses are laken into account : friction due to the meshing c gear teeth, lasses in bearings, friction in shaft seals and in gearbox synchronizer sets, losses due to cil churning. As far as cil churning lasses are concerned, a specifie test rig has been used to study this dissipation source and seme original fonmulations are proposed to quantify the heat generated. The originality of the model thal has been developed lies in the nodal decomposition : each element is considered as having a basic shape. Then classical correlations are used to quantify heat transfers, and it allows to simulate the thermal behaviour of any geared unit. A computational program has been designed in order to solve simultaneously power lasses and thermal calculations. Steady-state and transient problems can be solved. Seme measurements have been carried out with Iwo different power trains transmissions : a manual six-speed gearbox and an industrial gear unit. The results of these experiments show thal the numerical model allows to predict with a good accuracy the thermal behaviour and the efficiency

Full textThis work has been done in collaboration between the LTDS and the ESI-Software company. The aim is to develop a new direct method for the modelling of the strong physical coupling between magnetodynamic and thermo-metallurgical problems in order to numerically simulate induction hardening process. Usually, the classical indirect method is used to solve such coupled problems. We have proposed to use a new direct method as far as the source current is sinusoidal. Thus, non-linear magnetodynamic and thermal problems are solved together in the same finite element and the resolution of the magnetodynamic problem rests on the harmonic balance (or multi-harmonic) finite element formulation (HBFEM). Residual mechanical stresses and strains at the end of the treatment can be therefore calculated from the temperature and phase distributions

Full textThermal performance of silicon micro heat pipe (MHP) arrays have been studied experimentally and numerically in the present work. A numerical model has been developed in order to simulate the hydrodynamic and thermal behaviour of a water MHP array, whose cross sectional area is triangular. Capillary limit, optimal fluid charge and temperature profiles can be determined according to the geometry. Several silicon MHP arrays have been designed and realised (with the collaboration of LPM and LPCS). The MHP array is made of two silicon wafers of 350 µm thick. V-grooves have been micromachined in the first one using an anisotropic wet-chemical etching (KOH). On the second wafer, used to close the MHP (by fusion bonding with the first wafer), polysilicon thermistors are deposited on the external side. Two experimental set up have been realised for the experimental study. The first one permits to degass the fluid, to charge the MHP array and to measure the charge ; the other one is used to determine the thermal performances of several MHP arrays. For a MHP array made of three wafers and filled with methanol, the temperature profiles and the heat load allow to determine, using a 3D-model, the effective thermal conductivity. Comparing with a silicon wafer (with a same thickness), a noticeable increase in the effective thermal conductivity (about 300 %) is obtained
