Assim, a presente pesquisa procurou sistematizar o peculiar modus operandi de Poe através da análise de seus contos The black cat, The fall of the house of Usher, The oval portrait, The man of the crowd, William Wilson, Ligeia, e ensaios The philosophy of composition Philosophy of furniture e The poetic principle, para em seguida contrastar os resultados obtidos com as teorias do fantástico, em especial a de Todorov, permitindo estabelecer, dessa forma, pouco a pouco, outra leitura da literatura fantástica, sob a ótica da própria teoria pessoal de Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe said about his poem The Raven, in his essay The philosophy of composition, that [...] no one point in its composition is referrible either to accident or intuition - that the work proceeded, step by step, to its completion with the precision and rigid consequence of a mathematical problem. thereby demonstrating that he understood the creative process is a purely logical, conscious and analytical. And indeed, analysis of his texts proves the proposition cited. In addition, the american author is seen by much of literary criticism as the master of horror, featuring some of his texts in the canon of masterpieces of fantastic, with almost indispensable the presence of some of his tales in a collection of this literary category. Starting from those factors, it was possible to hypothesize that as the Poe‟s work is so closely related to the fantastic, the analysis of their rational and systematic compositional method may lead to inclusion of new elements the existing structure of fantastic literature. Thus, this research sought to systematize the peculiar modus operandi of Poe through the analysis of his short stories The black cat, The fall of the house of Usher, The oval portrait, The man of the crowd, William Wilson, Ligeia, and the essays The philosophy of composition, Philosophy of furniture and The poetic principle, then to contrast the results with the theories of fantastic, particularly Todorov‟s, establishing, thus, little by little, another reading of fantastic literature, from the perspective of their own Edgar Allan Poe‟s personal theory

The thesis, O Caleidoscópio de José J. Veiga: structural intersections in unusual narratives, accomplishes comparative analysis among texts of José J. Veiga (1915- 1999), namely, Os do outro lado, inserted in Os Cavalinhos de Platiplanto (1995), Sombras de reis barbudos (1995) and the short stories: Aladino (anonym), A chinela turca (1974) of Machado de Assis and Casa Tomada (1980), of Júlio Cortázar. This study also includes the analysis of Veiga’s novel, A casca da serpente (1994). Immanenet approaches lie in the above-mentioned procedures since considerations of the following scholarly people: Tzvetan Todorov, Roger Caillois, Lovecraft, Irène Bessière, Wayne C. Booth, Norman Friedman, Gerárd Genette, Linda Hutcheon and Bakhtin (partly). Presuppositons about fantastical and amazing realistic narratives arise, mainly from Felipe Furtado, Harry Belevan, Óscar Hahn, Francisca Coalla, Bella Josef, José Paulo Paes, Alejo Carpentier, Irlemar Chiampi and Jorge Schwartz’s reflections. As for the concepts of the new historical novel, the study rilies on Seymour Menton and Fernando Aínsa’s positions. Such analytical experiments intend to show that, though the literary construction of the supernatural thing involves formal-thematic variabilities, the dominant elements meet. So, Veiga’s narratives and correlate other ones result in “kaleidoscope images”, diverse and equivalente ones in a paradoxical way.

This work aims to study a still little-known facet of the poet Luís Nicolau Fagundes Varela (1841-1875). Although mostly known for his poems, Fagundes Varela also explored fiction, particularly a type of literature that converses directly with the first impulses of Romanticism. It is fantastic literature, generic term often used to designate a type of literature that has as main characteristic the depiction of a world avowedly imaginary, which includes in the same category science fiction and fairytale, for example. However, the fantastic with which Varela flirts in his publications of 1861 is much more restrictive in nature, and is also fairly representative of a particular moment in Brazilian literature. With As Ruínas da Glória, A Guarida de Pedra and As Bruxas, Varela was not the first of our writers who devoted to fantastic, nor the one who did it best. The influence of Noite na Taverna, by Álvares de Azevedo, is clear specially in one of the stories that we intend to analyze here, and it feels the weight of an E. T. A. Hoffmann, master of the genre, mentioned in the speeches of the characters. So, with the intent to bring to light a novelist Fagundes Varela, cultivator of fantastic literature, we also hope to contribute to the studies that go towards to seek a fantastic tradition in Brazil, not limited only to Noite na Taverna and Macário, wrote by Byron's famous disciple, even though his work has influenced Brazilian writers who take the paths of fantastic literature and, among them, Fagundes Varela

The master’s dissertation “The manifestations of gothic in H. P. Lovecraft: from the castle of Otranto to the manor of Ward” aims to analyze the elements inherited from the Gothic literature of the eighteenth century and adapted by Howard Phillips Lovecraft in his work The case of Charles Dexter Ward (1927) as well as his short stories The lurking fear and The outsider. In the first chapter we have done a study of Gothic literature like its origins, features and the works of the period. The second chapter is the study of works that preceded Gothic works and continued to use their motifs, space and themes, adjusting them. Still in this chapter we oppose the theories of Gothic and fantastic showing that from the gothic literature arises the fantastic literature that follows the line of terror. In the third chapter we analyze the characteristics of the fantastic literature of terror in the United States, and lastly we analyze the Lovecraft’s works, stressing the importance of Gothic literature to obtain the atmosphere of terror in his works.

Abstract:

Abstract: This work had as its purpose to review and rethink the legendary Carnaval of Recife in other heuristical parameters. The central objective is to risk proposing an aethestic model that can be applied in the editing and finalizing of research projects, one which see its subjects through a Visual Anthropology bias. The proposed scheme is made up of the following stages: photographs inserted between the paragraphs; photographs organized in plates where the text are captions; photographs placed without text creating a visual narrative; artistic interpetations/expressions of ethnographic material; assembled photographs with audiovisual support. In the introduction how the fieldwork was accomplished will be explained, from the selection of images to the creation of designs and to the final editing. The first chapter applies the first three stages of the model to examine the Carnaval of Recife. In the second chapter the images are presented as an artistic expression of ethnographic material, and the third chapter offers a review of the celebration that is Carnaval, through the double mediation of sounds and photographic images: images and sounds that travel in the memory and the imagination of the living.

Abstract:
Johanna Lundqvist
This project began with an interest in less conventional infrastructure solutions, from which a fascination for alternative ways to travel emerged. Many transportation systems were, historically, first shown in different world fairs and quickly ended up on the borderline between fun amusement attraction and a part of a city’s public transport system. What many of these unconventional transport systems have in common is the desire to, in better ways, overcome physical barriers, for example water, infrastructure or complex topography. Often they are not the cheapest, simplest or fastest options, but rather systems that take you from one place to another, in a memorable way, and with the preconditions and challenges of the space as a generator. The project resulted in a proposal for how to create a journey to remember, a journey which has been born out of an aspiration to overcome a physical barrier. With inspiration from collected references, a new transport system was placed on Kvarnholmen, Stockholm, which adds unexpected qualities to a place that can handle a new, strong character, a place that is already characterised by nostalgia. Abstract:
The hospital environment is orientated for the cure of diseases, while the individual that falls ill is forgotten in his anguish, expectations, fears. The fantastic narratives can be profitable in the search for the attention of this patient’s fantasy, since they stand out among the rest of the literary production by affecting its interlocutor in unconscious and conscious levels, allowing the “recognition” of its deepest contents. The objective of our study is to understand the hospitalized patient’s fantasy in it’s relation with a fantastic narrative. The psychoanalytical method was adopted for the achievement of the study, since it is implicated in a vision of man that presupposes the presence of a living unconscious in the human being, as well as in its productions. It was realized 10 interviews with patients between 18 and 60 years old interned in the Santa Casa de Misericórdia of Assis. To apprehend the fantasies of the patients in their relation with a fantastic narrative demanded the development of innovative research strategies, therefore, it was selected the tale “O rosto atrás do rosto”, from Marina Colasanti, to be narrated by the researcher during the interview. The analysis was realized in order to contemplate the peculiarity of certain interviews, that had been discussed separately. It was then manifested the interviewee’s concerns regarding the damages, “real” and “imagined”, suffered. Abstract:
This current study aims to ascertain the close connection between female figure and Italian horror/thriller, cinema, here called "fantastico" in an extensive meaning, in order to highlight common features related to both genres. The periodization of research goes from 60s to 80s and the first purpose was to evaluate, according to a culturalist approach, the woman-horror interdependence, often focused in a mysoginic approach to the genre. The results have often been conflicting with respect to the starting presuppositions: the women are represented only as victims, the audience’s satisfaction is exclusively male. The discussion of this thesis was possible through an empirical and applicative research of a film sample and a careful investigation of latest writings that aim in different cases to reverse the paradigm of the starting point. The second objective detected differences between female representation in the Italian and American cinema, moving from the assumption that the theories which we are based on, come from united states and have provided a sample of more American films than Italian ones. Therefore the intent of this essay was testing the applicability of some historical theoric paradigms to the Italian case. the research’ s method involved a quantitative cataloging of extensive film corpus and an intensive one, which analyzes the main female stereotypes drawn from literature and cinema (damsel in distress, belle dame sans merci, final girl ). the conclusions show that the Italian fantastic genre has resisted more than other ones of a permanent conflict between emancipation and conservative resistance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Over the past 20 years, Spanish cinema has embraced the fantastic genres in filmmaking. Films such as El día de la bestia/The Day of the Beast (Álex de la Iglesia, 1995), Los otros/The Others (Alejandro Amenábar, 2001), El laberinto del fauno/Pan’s Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro, 2006) and Los cronocrímenes/Timecrimes (Nacho Vigalondo, 2007) have expressed the cultural outlook of the new generation of Spanish filmmakers, and have gained popularity as productions aimed at national and international audiences. While scholarly articles and essays have been written on some of these films and filmmakers, there has yet to be a comprehensive study of this current cycle. This is the first English-language scholarly study of contemporary Spanish fantastic film, addressing its origin, its manifestations, and how these manifestations are representative of the 21st century Spanish cinema identity. The variety of films, in genre, approach and content, makes this period unique in Spanish film history. Considering Spanish fantastic film’s continuing (and arguably increasing) popularity, both with filmmakers and audiences, my original contribution to this area is to investigate this period in both Spanish and genre film history and studies.

Abstract:
Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, arguably the most famous Brazilian author, has been studied perhaps more than any other figure in Brazilian literature. Because Machado's novels are so exceptional, many of his good short stories have been neglected by scholars, particularly those categorized by some as “fantastic.” This study attempts to fill that gap by analyzing the most prominent female characters in Machado's fantastic fiction. After providing a brief overview of the term fantastic and explaining how the stories used qualify as fantastic, this study identifies several tropes into which their female characters fit. Chapter 1: The Femme Fragile analyzes the tropes of woman as foil for rational man and woman as manipulable possession, while Chapter 2: The Femme Fatale examines the tropes of woman as siren and woman as fantastic other. Although these tropes seem to expose Machado's misogyny, in reality they function as his dramatization of the erroneous chauvinist thinking of nineteenth-century Brazil. Machado employs these tropes only to subvert them and the patriarchal thinking on which they are based, allowing his readers to come to more productive ways of seeing gender relations in Brazil.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to characterize and explain the different forms and views of Mexican Fantastic narrative, which is portrayed specially during the Romantic and Naturalistic periods. Our task goes further than just mentioning and describing the specific corpus of Fantastic texts. Its orientation towards the critical apprehension of this narrative form is a part of the general literary process. Our procedure consists of determining the ideological function the Fantastic text plays during the periods mentioned. Also, we pay close attention to the deconstruction of the verbal procedures that frequently appear throughout the ideological function. In respect to the methodological and theoretical aspect, we apply a conception of the Fantastic, supported in a Pragmatical theory. Its purpose is to overcome the Formalistic essentialism in which an important part of the critique fails.

Abstract: This work is divided in three parts. On the first, it is investigated the work course of the storyteller, from Minas Gerais, Murilo Eugênio Rubião (1916 - 1991), together with the reviews he had received. On the second part, setting forth from the statement that Murilo is the predecessor of the modem fantastic stile in our fiction prose, we made a theoretical study about this literature genre. On the third part, we sought to describe all of the author's narratives, focusing on a specific concept of the fantastic. Finally, we raised a general hypothesis about the meaning of Murilo's work, trying to connect everything that had been discussed.

Zouzoula, Evgenia. "The fantastic creatures of Bronze Age Crete." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2007. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11787/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the imaginary beings of Minoan iconography with the aim of understanding their functions and meaning within the iconography of Bronze Age Crete. Two broad categories of Minoan fantastic creatures can be discerned, namely the imported and the locally created hybrids. With the exception of investigations of the genius, previous studies have focused mainly on matters of typology and style and, more importantly, have detached the illustrations of imaginary beings from their context of creation and use. Consequently, griffins and sphinxes are vaguely classified as "royal monsters", the dragon is merely considered as the transporter of deities, the reasons behind the creation of the bird-lady and the "Minotaur" are still unfathomable and the demonic creations of the Zakros workshop have not been explained at all and are simply viewed as meaningless. On the other hand, conjoined animals and less popular monsters, like the winged goats, have been more or less overlooked. In an attempt to remedy this, this study places the fantastic creatures of the Minoans within their context. The iconography of the Prepalatial, Protopalatial, Neopalatial and Final Palatial periods is examined sequentially so as to determine the degree to which the functions of demons and monsters changed through time in the Minoan repertoire. Variations in the choice of media for their depictions, the consideration of their find contexts, of religious and socio-political developments in each period and of the development of monstrous iconography in the mainland, the Aegean islands, the Near East and Egypt, all help towards a better appreciation of the fantastic world of the "Minoans". As a result, generic characterisations of the Minoan imaginary beings are rejected and the multiplicity of their roles, their ability to evolve and their significant role in the expression of the Minoan mindset are established. In short, the demons and monsters of the Minoans are revealed as reflections of the multifaceted, complex society of Bronze Age Crete and articulate the fears, concerns and beliefs of its different members.

Abstract:
Research on bot detection on online social networks has received a considerable amount of attention in Swedish news media. Recently however, criticism of the research field of bot detection on onlinesocial networks has been presented, highlighting the need to investigate the research field to determine if information based on flawed research has been spread. To investigate the research field, this study has attempted to review the process of bot detection on online social networks and evaluate the proposed criticism of current bot detection research by: conducting a literature review of bots on online social networks, conducting a literature review of methods for bot detection on online social networks, and detecting bots in three different politically associated data sets with Swedish Twitter accounts usingfive different bot detection methods. Results of the study showed minor evidence that previous research may have been flawed. Still, based on the literature review of bot detection methods, it was determined that this criticism was not extensive enough to critique the research fieldof bot detection on online social networks as a whole. Further, problems highlighted in the criticism were recognized to potentially have arose from a lack of differentiation between bot types in research. An insufficient differentiation between bot types in research was also acknowledged as a factor which could lead to difficulties ingeneralizing the results from bot detection studies measuring the effect of bots on political opinions. Instead, the study acknowledged that a good bot differentiation could potentially improve bot detection.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study the market for fantastic fiction in Sweden, focusing on the minor publishers and their relationship with the three major publishing groups. The fantastic fiction in Swedish today are generally dominated by bestselling anglo-american authors, especially at the major publishers. The selection of fantastic fiction that is not originally in English and that diverges from the classic, epic high fantasy is often provided by minor publishers. By researching the range of fantastic fiction in Sweden today, and combining that research with qualitative interviews with informants from five minor publishers and Sweden's largest book shop for fantastic fiction, I wish to examine if the minor publishers provide an important alternative for Swedish readers of fantastic fiction. I also intend to investigate whether those publishers actively try to broaden the Swedish market and if they see themselves as a complement and an alternative rather than competing with the major publishers. This is a study in sociology of literature, focusing on a literary genre that is generally regarded as popular or trivial literature. Therefore, this thesis also discusses the curcuit of popular literature and the position and conditions of fantastic fiction in Sweden today, using the french sociologist Pierre Bourdieu's frameworks and terminology regarding economical and cultural capital. Fantastic fiction is a genre normally associated with economical rather than cultural capital, a notion that greatly affects its position and status in the world of literature.

Abstract:
This research project proposes to investigate the manner in which early twentieth century fantasy used the fictional representation of objects for its own emergence. The hypothesis is that certain representation schemes elaborated by authors of nineteenth century fantastic literature, such as Hoffman, Poe and Maupassant, also appear in twentieth century literature, reemployed in response to the changing sociocultural situation. The thesis is divided in two: the first part, itself subdivided in two chapters, functions as a theoretical and historical framework for the textual analysis. The concept of the image is discussed and precise ideas of literary space and object are defined. This is followed by a reconstruction of nineteenth century fantasy (theoretical and, particularly, genealogical reflections are not lacking), which, on the one hand, is aimed at historicizing the idea of the “fantastic genre”; and on the other, intends to identify a typology of objects structurally connected to this narrative variety. Two are the classes of objects defined, and equal in number are the chapters structuring the second part of the work. Both types of objects, which for simplicity’s sake will be called fetish-objects and ghostly objects, are halfway between fantasy and the real. Yet while the fetish-object has something more with respect to a realistically described object, the ghostly object lacks something and thus does not manage to completely materialize. Among the authors discussed are Papini, Pirandello, Bontempelli, Savinio and Landolfi; while references to authors of other nations abound, from Kafka to Sartre, from James to Virginia Woolf, in keeping with the consideration of the Italian fantastic genre within a broader literary geography.

Abstract:
Abstract This is a study based on a national longitudinal study on Swedish school students (the School, sport and health project, SIH). Aim: The purpose of this study was to examine why young adults rate their health as good. The primary purpose was to determine the factors that respondents perceive as meaningful for their subjectively perceived health. A secondary purpose was to investigate how the informants self rated health status have changed since 2010. How do the respondents define the concept of health? How do the respondents reflect about their health in relation to their everyday life, living, work/studies, leisure, training, family/friends, past life/future life? In which extent do the respondents feel that they can influence their own lives? Method: The study is of a qualitative character. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sample group, which originated in the SIH project. The interviews have been based on seven main topics: Everyday life, work /studies, leisure, training, family/friends, past life / future life and pathogenic problems. The results have been analyzed on the basis of Antonovsky's SOC-term Results: Our results demonstrate that the control over daily life, physical activity, and to some extent also religious participation could possibly be related to the informants' good health status. The results also show that informants’ health status has deteriorated slightly since 2010, both physically and mentally. Conclusion: Our informants have a high SOC in relation to their daily lives, which might result in their good health status. The importance of physical activity and social interaction are two factors highlighted by this study. However, we have seen the difficulty of ascertaining what actually affects what. Our interpretation is that the ability of a factor to affect an individual, positively or negatively, is proportional to their subjective perception and values.

In this essay a conclusion about the way female characters are portrayed in fantasy novels will be attempted through an analysis of one selected female character from each selected novel. The works that have been chosen are; J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Robert Jordan’s The Eye of the World and A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. The analysis will be done with the help of examples and theories from both feministic criticism and gender studies. During the course of the discussion the background of the fantasy genre and goal of the scientific theories will be explained. The fantasy genre in itself allows its authors a chance to criticize the norms of our society, freed from the restraints of realism. The findings of this essay however, imply that some fantasy authors forsake this chance in order to more accurately emulate the medieval European society or in fact actively reinforce patriarchal norms.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the growth and practice of two distinct reading techniques, with reference to fantastical fiction from і 843 to 1973. While acknowledging that specific reading practices are not exclusive to particular groups or individuals, it is proposed, broadly, that readers fall into two categories: those who tend to be distanced from the text and approach it analytically; those who tend to embrace the text and immerse themselves in its narrative. These two groups, critical readers and experience readers, have their reading habits determined by basic philosophical assumptions. One aim of the dissertation is to explore the link between this division and divisions within the literary hierarchy, articulating a methodology/typology of reading. Criticism of texts in this dissertation involves discussion of the above hypothesis, assessing the value assigned to literary works by each group of reader and considering how the texts themselves investigate the hypothesis. Various theories and critical concepts are engaged with, including those of Marxist aesthetics, psychoanalysis, liberal humanism, cultural studies, and postmodernism. The aim is to demonstrate the practice of both reading techniques and to draw conclusions concerning their respective psychological and social significance. The dissertation argues that fantastical fiction is often a site of interaction between such binary opposites as realism/fantasy, high/popular, ideas/escape, and polemic/amusing. The struggle between these opposites may provide a dialectic of ''critical'" and ''experience" reading.

Fusco, Coco. "Fantastic reconstruction : postcolonial artists and the colonial archive." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2007. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/13584/.

Full text
Abstract:
The context paper addresses works submitted that are informed by postcolonial theoretical debates about multiculturalism, racial identification, essentialism, cultural hybridity and mimicry that prevailed in the cultural milieus of New York and London in the 1980s and early 1990s. Race is addressed in all these works as a language and racialisation is treated as a social and psychic process. The practice that is addressed in the context paper is interdisciplinary, involving performance, video and curating, as well as writing that assesses how these works engage the public in a dialogue about race as a signifying practice and about the seductive qualities of racial imagery. Central to the works submitted is the notion of the archive, and more particularly the colonial archive. The context paper singles out the pertinent conceptualizations of the archive in relation to the postcolonial theories and practices under consideration. Those most relevant to the works submitted are the writings of Edward Said, Michel Foucault and Allan Sekula. The colonial archive is understood as actual repositories of official representations of colonised peoples, as well as a structuring principle that demarcates the possible articulations of subaltern selfhood. The context paper treats the artistic works submitted as attempts to work through postcolonial theories via critically informed lived experiences, which is to say via praxis. What is proposed is that performative re- enactment and interaction with audiences offers an important means of exploring how racialised cultural discourses actually operate in and shape understanding of the world. The principal argument for the originality of the works submitted is that the reflexive use of performances foregrounding the constructed nature of racial identity through re-enactment and simulation constitutes an innovative approach to postcolonial praxis. The context paper also summarizes relevant aspects of the historical context in which the submitted works were produced. During that period, the author was associated with artists and art collectives that were actively engaged in a postcolonial critique of cultural institutions and Eurocentric aesthetics in the United States and Britain. The multicultural activism of that period concentrated on developing ways to combine experimental techniques with a "new cultural politics of difference" in the words of cultural theorist Cornel West. Multicultural activists were concerned not only with critiquing the stereotyping of racial minorities in mainstream media and art history, but also with putting forward a notion of race as a social construct and a symbolic practice. The works submitted address the ways that racial tropes from colonial discourse, such as "the primitive" reasserted themselves in the contemporary discourses of state-sponsored and corporate multiculturalism. The context statement focuses on three major cultural projects and nine essays that engage with the notion of race as a language. Those cultural projects are: my caged Amerindian performance, Two Undiscovered Amerindians Visit the West (1992-1994), featured in the video The Couple in the Cage (1993); my video a/k/a Mrs. George Gilbert (2004); and my curatorial project Only Skin Deep: Changing Visions of the American Self (2003). The essays address either these works or others by artists who share a concern with racial representation. The context statement outlines the theoretical underpinnings that inform these works. I discuss how these works have been informed by structuralist and post-structuralist theories of language and discursive practice; psychoanalytic theories of racial identification and fantasy and postcolonial models of cultural interpretation. The conclusion incorporates retrospective commentary on the shortcomings in my approach and in my original understanding of audience reception, particularly in relation to credulity and the suspension of disbelief.

Ward, Brendan. "Changing planets and climates in select fantastic literature." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/3994.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with literature’s engagement with the environment, specifically ecosystems and climate change. Literature of the fantastic, works that break from the tradition of mimetic literature and the limits of realism, are the focus of this thesis, which argues, alongside ecocriticism, that literature must be part of the interdisciplinary drive towards greater ecological awareness. Speculative literature adds fantastic elements or draws on scientific extrapolations into the future, and offers a platform to engage with the science of environmental issues alongside philosophical engagements with the relationship between humans and the more-than-human world around them. This thesis draws on ecocriticism to examine the role of reading and criticism in constructing more ecologically sustainable societies. From this position, it asks how fantasy can be used to convey these themes. As a result, this thesis is interested in definitions of fantasy, drawing on science fiction and fantasy to examine Kathryn Hume’s framework of the fantastic impulse. Placing fantastic texts on two axes, Hume examines the ways texts support or subvert the reader’s expectations, and encourage or discourage reflection on their extratextual worlds. This thesis contends that, texts that encourage engagement are most transformative, but that the spectrum of engagement and disengagement challenges authors to navigate between didacticism and emotive imagery. To show this, this thesis examines four series of novels drawing on the fantastic impulse. Frank Herbert’s Dune Chronicles, Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars Trilogy and Science in the Capital, and George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. The first two are on opposite ends of both of Hume’s axes, and imagine the challenges of constructing Earth-like ecosystems on other planets, asking questions about the sustainability of such a project as well as the possibilities of transforming society. The latter two engage with rapid climate change, Robinson’s looking at contemporary climate change and Martin’s engaging with historical climate change. They interrogate the impact of the climate on human and more- than-human life, and reveal the tension between comforting didactic revisions of human- environment interactions and framework-disturbing alternate ways of relating to the environment. This tension is where the fantastic is powerful, allowing alternate visions to pierce sceptical readers’ defences.

Raiford, Wanda Sybil. "The fantastical historic and representations of enslaved people's resistive violence." Diss., University of Iowa, 2013. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1893.

Full text
Abstract:
My project argues that during the 19th century resistive violence by the enslaved is impossible to meaningfully acknowledge and simultaneously too compelling to ignore. The problem of representing this violence persists in 20th century literary representations of enslaved people's conscious militancy in the U.S. Black violence is often invisible, composing an un-tell-able or at least untold aspect of history. Because these acts that almost completely resist the kind of social/historical encodations of events that make the unfamiliar, that which is distant in time and experience, familiar, violent black self-possession finds expression in strangeness - what I call the fantastical historic. The fantastical historic as a theory explains how literature contributes, through the vehicle of the non-mimetic, to both obscurantism and clarification to the lived experience of enslavers and the enslaved.

Abstract:
Magical realism is a mode of literature that does not fit easily in anyone genre. In contrast, travel fiction has existed for so long that it has evolved into a straggling, cross-genre narrative form. Nevertheless, when coupled together, magical realist and travel fiction narratives share in common a number of features that allow the resulting text to traverse, create and challenge notions of space, territory and borders. I theorise that a number of key authors have already harnessed these features to criticise and deconstruct dominant hegemonic ideologies, including those of class, gender inequality and racial constructs. This thesis is an examination and discussion of how the two forms intertwine and complement each other, and how the features and characteristics encountered in one fonn augment and inform the other. I also posit clear examples of the phenomenon of intermingling in established texts. This thesis includes an in-depth discussion of key magical realist travel texts and the production of a new novel. The critical essay stretches to 27,000 words. The novel, a 71,000 word work, is written with these concerns as a central feature. It incorporates travel fiction and magical realist gemes in an attempt to update and re-deploy the form in a contemporary setting. The process of creating both texts necessitated a great deal of background reading from plimary and critical sources. My analysis of source texts and critical texts led to the conclusion that my initial theory was correct. Select examples of travel and magical realist literature employ narrative features to reinforce challenges to the established status-quo. However, the thesis further argues the two forms are interrelated in other ways, containing contradictory elements, a preoccupation with place and identity and the deconstruction and re-creation of myth. These features are also examined and discussed. Analytical reading and the writing of a related novel indicate that the use of magical realism and travel fiction results in a dynamic and effective challenge to the construction of oppressive societal norms.

Abstract:
In the research for this project I investigate several prominent definitions and examples of fantasy in contemporary visual art, notably associated with the Freudian “uncanny” and the Surrealist “marvellous”. In the dissertation I propose a sub-genre of fantasy: the Visionary Fantastic. The mode of this sub-genre, I claim, is manifest in the work of several contemporary artists. It is also a concept I find useful in describing and directing my own artistic practice during this project. The adopted research methods include:
- Surveying a number of concepts, theories and literature on fantasy, I have drawn upon a number of writers, noting two seminal essays, “The Uncanny” (1919), by Sigmund Freud and “The Surrealist Manifesto” (1924) by André Breton, and definitions by theorist Tzvetan Todorov.
- Investigating the subject by discussing elements of the Visionary Fantastic in the practice of six contemporary artists whose work has been of considerable significance to my practice. Fantastic art can hardly be referred to as an autonomous area and does not refer to a particular movement in art. Given that it rather possesses a system of inclusion based upon certain selective principles, these artists address elements of the Visionary Fantastic yet do not approach the concept of fantasy as their exclusive concern.
- Discussing the processes in my practice, addressing the subject loosely within tropes of Utopia (– Arcadian lands, fantastic communities and marginal societies), Obsession (– techniques of detailed repetition, miniscule facture), Monstrosity (– formidable creatures, instinctual domains, hybridity) and Enchantment (– meditative, mediumistic and altered states of mind).
The disciplines I have applied in the work for the end exhibition include painting, printmaking and drawing. The outcome, a selection of works produced within this research, will be displayed as a cohesive body of work. It addresses myriad fantasy manifestations within the four principles discussed in the dissertation.

Denby, Michelle. "The feminist postmodern fantastic : sexed, gendered, and sexual identities." Thesis, University of Northampton, 2001. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/2967/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates a diverse range of feminist postmodern philosophy, distinguished by its varying rearticulation of the relationship between modernism and postmodernism and feminism’s own position vis-à-vis that debate. Drawing on postmodernism’s primary tenet that substantive, binary identity categories comprise discursive, performative constructs, feminist postmodernism theorises a range of strategies for their subversive re-performance. This is realised in the mobilisation of parodic, “failed” repetitions and identities embodied, for instance, by transsexual, transgender, and transvestite personae. Hence the reformulation of postmodern versions of agency, resistance, and choice. In the second instance, the thesis examines the combination of feminist postmodern philosophy with the narrative techniques of postmodernism and its sister genre, the fantastic mode. As a heterogeneous, open-ended, self-reflexive form, the “postmodern fantastic” challenges conventional realism and its correlative sovereign subject. The postmodern fantastic is redeployed by feminist practitioners, whose inscription of both textual and topographical re-performance, such as is manifest in the cyborg and the grotesque, represent the literary counterparts of feminist postmodern agency. The above provide critical contexts for a reading of four late-twentieth-century women writers, focusing in particular on their intervention in the modernism/postmodemism debate and their deployment of the feminist postmodern fantastic as a means of destabilising sexed, gendered, and sexual identity. The selected authors Hélène Cixous, Monique Wittig, Jeanette Winterson, and Angela Carter represent distinct and diverse, culturally specific, literary and feminist traditions, reformulating the relationship between modernism and postmodernism in different ways and with varying degrees of success. They coalesce, however, in their contribution to the feminist postmodern fantastic. It is the general purpose of the thesis to demonstrate how this particular mode embodies one of feminist postmodernism’s most powerful means of literary and ideological critique

Abstract:

While studies of fantastic literature have often focused on their structural and genre characteristics, less attention has been paid to the manner in which they address social issues and concerns. Drawing on theoretical, taxonomic, and historical approaches, this study argues that 19th-century England represented a key period of transformation during which fantastic literature evolved away from its folkloristic, mythic, and satirical origins and toward the modern genres of science fiction, feminist fantasy, and literary horror.

The thesis examines the subversive and transformative function of the fantastic in nineteenth-century British literature, particularly how the novel Frankenstein (1831), the poem “Goblin Market” (1862), and the novel Dracula (1897) make deliberate uses of the materials of fantastic literature to engage in social and cultural commentary on key issues of their time, and by so doing to mark a significant transformation in the way fantastic materials can be used in narrative.

Frankenstein took the materials of the Gothic and effectively transformed them into science fiction, not only through its exploration of the morality of scientific research, but more crucially through its critique of systems of education and the nature of learning. "Goblin Market " transformed the materials of fairy tales into a morally complex critique of gender relations and the importance of women's agency, which paved the way for an entire tradition of such redactions among later feminist writers. Dracula draws on cruder antecedents of vampire tales and the novel of sensation to create the first modern literary horror novel, while addressing key emerging anxieties of nationalism and personal identity.

Although historical connections are drawn between these three key works, written at different points during the nineteenth century, it does not argue that they constitute a single identifiable movement, but rather that each provided a template for how later writers might adapt fantastic materials to more complex literary, social, and didactic ends, and thus provided a groundwork for the more complex modern uses of the fantastic as a legitimate resource for writers concerned with not only sensation, but significant cultural and social concerns.

Abstract:
This thesis traces the paths of the production and criticism of science-fiction literature in Brazil from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present. The goal is to investigate the process of marginalization of the genre from the standpoint of the construction of Brazilian literary canons, roughly divided in two branches: the high canon, which legitimates the Brazilian intelligentsia by relating it to European high culture; and the popular canon, mediated by the same intellectual elite, which ideologically affirms Brazilian myths of nationality. The analysis of critical discourses about science fiction shows this duality, in addition to some of the values, assumptions and practices that regulate the processes of literary canonization in Brazil. The questioning of these parameters is a key way to understand the non-assimilation of the genre by the official canon, which politically constructs the idea of a Brazilian literature.

Scott, Tania. "Locating Ireland in the fantastic fiction of Lord Dunsany." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2011. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2630/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will locate the fantastic fiction of Lord Dunsany in a tradition of Irish writing, while simultaneously examining representations of Ireland within the texts themselves. Dunsany has been regarded – until now – as a marginal figure in Irish literature, but this study will show that he deserves a place in the canon. My research will demonstrate that, from his early involvement in the Abbey Theatre through to his late introspective novels set in Ireland, Dunsany throughout his life engages with Irish literary and cultural traditions. The first chapter will focus on Lord Dunsany’s theatrical writings which have been rarely staged since his death and have attracted little attention from scholars. By examining performances of the plays in Ireland and beyond, the links between the playwright and the national theatre will become clear. Building on this work on the plays, Chapter Two and moves on to an analysis of Dunsany’s novels – including The King of Elfland’s Daughter, his best known work – and places them within a historical context of conflict both at home in Ireland and throughout Europe. The next chapter looks at Dunsany’s later novels set in Ireland and questions why it is at this point in the 1930s, after decades of writing fantastic fiction, that the author chooses to locate his works in his own land. The same themes and ideas found in the novels are also prominent in Dunsany’s short stories which form the focus of chapters four and five. Chapter Four examines the stories set in Pegāna, the first tales he wrote and those which made Dunsany’s reputation as a writer of high fantasy, and locates their other-worldliness within the real world of twentieth-century Ireland. The last chapter deals with the later short stories, and brings Dunsany’s work up to date by using recent work on Irish postcolonialism and theories of Empire to analyse these narratives. The conclusion will consider Dunsany’s work overall, by way of close readings of texts from the beginning and end of his career which will allow us to trace the development of Ireland as a concept and as a literary influence throughout his writings.

Schwendener, Alyssa E. "The most fantastic lie| The invention of lesbian histories." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10004166.

Full text
Abstract:

The Most Fantastic Lie explores the troubled realm of lesbian history through contemporary art practice, visual culture, and activist collectives, arguing the necessity of new strategies toward the construction of marginalized histories in the absence of traditional evidence-based documentation. I identify three overlapping strategies toward the reconstruction of lesbian and queer histories: the documentation and collection of existing material evidence by grassroots archivists and contemporary artists who base their practice in affective relationships to archival objects; the manipulation of found objects, in the tradition of Claude Levi-Strauss’s concept of bricolage, to serve as visual placeholders for absent histories; and the fabrication of material evidence by artists working in a mode referred to by Carrie Lambert-Beatty as parafiction: deceptions that have productive power in the creation of new senses of plausibility. These strategies, in addition to providing visual pleasure to those seeking lesbian and queer histories, each mount critiques of institutionalized notions of legitimate history. In shucking the burden of proof and elevating denigrated forms of evidence such as gossip, oral history, and fantasy, artists and collectives are able to construct lesbian histories while simultaneously demonstrating the unstable foundations of historical truths.

McKeown, Andrew Patrick. "Reading the fantastic : the narrative fiction of Barbey d'Aurevilly." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13414.

Full text
Abstract:
Although Barbey's handling of the Fantastic has certainly not been overlooked, studies tend to examine this subject from a conceptual or thematic perspective. This has left unexplored the relationship between the Fantastic and Barbey's way of writing; this study aims to fill that gap by offering a stylistic analysis of the Fantastic. The thesis approaches the question by first attempting to define how the Fantastic works, and concludes by proposing the principle of a dynamic flux between writing of the real and the unreal. From this premise, the study of Barbey's Fantastic questions first the presence of realist discourse in the texts, and offers a critique of the traditional view which suggests that Barbey borrows from nineteenth-century realist orthodoxy. In its place, a broader form of mimesis is proposed. Following this, the thesis examines how Barbey's fiction works at counterpoint to the mimetic code, undermining and destabilising the illusion of vraisemblance. In so doing, the peculiarities of narrative technique are promoted as germane to the voicing of textual doubt. Then, Barbey's rhetoric is considered, offering a reading of how verbal exorbitance weakens the relationship with the signified. After this, Barbey's attempts to re-write differences are examined, a trend which provokes a crisis in the differential foundations of human understanding. The thesis concludes by examining how these principles work within the nouvelle Léa. This discussion indicates how the Fantastic demands to be read as a whole textual entity and not as a sporadic mode, and suggests that it is only in endless and unchecked interpretation- reading- that the meaning of the Fantastic is to be grasped.

Full text
Abstract:
This comparative project investigates different representations of the sandman between the 19th century and the 20th century. My discussion focuses on Romantic texts, in particular E.T.A. Hoffmann's 1816 literary tale "Der Sandmann." While the traditional scholarship on Hoffmann uses both psychoanalytical and feminist approaches, I show how Friedrich Schlegel's concept of chaos and Jean-François Lyotard's concept of the postmodern sublime help us to understand Hoffmann's complex narrative structure. I argue that in Hoffmann's tale there is no unified sandman figure. However, different storytellers in the tale shape the sandman's various depictions. In a way, the sandman figure becomes a fluid character whose enigma the narrative's structure sustains. Paul Berry's 1991 stop-motion animation "The Sandman" visualizes Hoffmann's narrative. However, the film also reintroduces a unified sandman figure that is characterized by uncanny strangeness. My analyses both of Hoffmann's literary and Berry's cinematographic narrative show that their complex structures allow for ceaseless interpretations. This leads me to conclude that fantastic narratives lend themselves to insightful and critical ponderings.
