Chiu, Hsin-Yao. "Family Structure and Family Instability: Evaluating Their Influence on Adult Outcomes." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3398.

Full text
Abstract:
Family structure is a widely used independent variable. However, in recent years researchers have questioned its predicting power. They also strive to improve its use. This study drew on Holman's (2001) theoretical model and examined the association between the family structure independent variables (Family Structure, Family Instability, and Parental Romantic Partners) and the outcome variables (Coming to Terms, Self-esteem, Maturity, and Depression). The analysis was conducted with a sample of 3,705 individuals (2,316 females and 1,389 males) randomly selected from the entire population that completed the Relationship Evaluation Questionnaire (RELATE). Results showed that Family Instability was a stronger predictor than Family Structure and Parental Romantic Partners. Among all of the outcome variables, Coming to Terms had the strongest association with each of the independent variables. Implications of the results are discussed.

Childs, Carrie. ""I want this, I want that" : a discursive analysis of mental state terms in family interaction." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/9354.

Full text
Abstract:
Using the theoretical approach of discursive psychology, this thesis examines the interactive uses of mental state talk, in particular the term want , in everyday family interaction. In mainstream cognitive psychology mental state terms are examined as words which signify internal referents. How individuals come to competently participate in social interaction is formulated as a problem of how individual, isolated minds come to understand the contents of other minds. This thesis challenges these individualistic notions and examines notions of wanting as interactionally managed participants concerns. The data are taken from two sources; a set of video recordings taken from a series of fly-on-the-wall documentary programmes which each focus on a particular family and videotapes of mealtimes recorded by three families. Recordings were initially transcribed verbatim and sections related to the emerging themes within the thesis were subsequently transcribed using the Jefferson notation system. These transcripts were then analysed, alongside repeated viewings of the video recordings. The thesis considers a range of analytic themes, which are interlinked via one of the primary research questions, which has been to examine how, and to what end, speakers routinely deploy notions of wanting in everyday talk-in-interaction. A major theme has been to highlight inherent problems with work in social cognition which uses experimental tasks to examine children s Theory of Mind and understanding of desires . I argue that the assumptions of this work are a gross simplification of the meaning wanting for both children and adults. A further theme has been to examine the sequential organisation of directives and requests in both adults and children s talk. Finally, I examine speakers practices for rejecting a proposal regarding their actions and for denying a formulation of their motivations by a co-interactant. The conclusions of the thesis show that expressions of wanting are practical expressions which work within a flow of interactional and deontic considerations and that making claims regarding one s own or others wants is entirely a social matter. I argue that rather than being examined for what they may reveal about the mind , mental state terms may be fruitfully examined as interactional matters.

Hillyard, Cinnamon. "Construction and Analysis of a Family of Numerical Methods for Hyperbolic Conservation Laws with Stiff Source Terms." DigitalCommons@USU, 1999. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/7120.

Full text
Abstract:
Numerical schemes for the partial differential equations used to characterize stiffly forced conservation laws are constructed and analyzed. Partial differential equations of this form are found in many physical applications including modeling gas dynamics, fluid flow, and combustion. Many difficulties arise when trying to approximate solutions to stiffly forced conservation laws numerically. Some of these numerical difficulties are investigated. A new class of numerical schemes is developed to overcome some of these problems. The numerical schemes are constructed using an infinite sequence of conservation laws. Restrictions are given on the schemes that guarantee they maintain a uniform bound and satisfy an entropy condition. For schemes meeting these criteria, a proof is given of convergence to the correct physical solution of the conservation law. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Mesutoglu, Canan. "The Relationship Among Self Construal, Family Functioning And Sibling Number In Terms Of Gender In High School Students." Master's thesis, METU, 2012. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12614885/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of the study was to understand the nature of the relationship among self construal, family functioning and sibling number in terms of gender. Five hundred twenthy-nine high school students participated in the study. Participants were selected from seven general public high schools in Ankara. Data was gathered via Personal Information Questionnaire, Autonomous-Related Self in the Family Scale (Kagitç
ibagi, 2007a) and Family Assessment Device (Epstein, Balwin &
Bishop 1983). Results of the study indicated that, for both genders, relational selfconstruals had significant correlations with healthy family functioning. It was also evidenced that autonomous self-construal scores of males were significantly higher than females and related self construal scores of females were significantly higher than males. Furthermore the family functioning dimensions that families tend to be v healthy or unhealthy were displayed. All findings were dicussed in line with the relevant literature.

A lot of relations have been newly regulated by the new Civil Code (2000) which came into force on the 1st of July, 2001. The greatest alternations involve matrimonial and family relations. There is no separate Matrimonial and Family Code left as such. After the 1st of July, 2001 matrimonial and family relations are regulated by the 3rd book of Civil Code (2000) which is intituled Family Law. Great changes were also made in regulation of extinctive prescription in family law. Essentially was innovated the general rule anticipating to apply extinctive prescription for claims arising from matrimonial and family relations. This master’s study analyses the conception of family law, the conception of extinctive prescription, norms regulating application of extinctive prescription for the claims arising from matrimonial and family relations. Also compares the norms regulating extinctive prescription settled in Matrimonial and Family Code (1969) and in new Civil Code (2000), analyses the practise of Highest Court. These questions are analysed in order to realize what changes were made in regulation of extinctive prescription implementing law reform, what problems do arise in application of extinctive prescription in family law and how it is possible to solve them. Extinctive prescription is law institute known in all countries. This master’s study briefly overlooks the regulation of extinctive prescription in some foreign countries (Federation of Russia; France; England and Wales).

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 233-306. A study of the phenomenon of somatization as it occurs in the primary care setting. The phenomenon was studied in terms of aspects of illness behaviour and risk of psychiatric morbidity. It is suggested that abnormal illness behaviour in the form of somatization may be an important factor in the non-recognition of mild non-psychotic psychiatric illness in the primary care setting. The results of the study indicate that an assessment of the patients' attitudes and beliefs about symptoms, and an exploration of psychosocial issues, may lead to a better understanding of why the patients have sought help, and may lead to early identification and appropriate treatment of somatizing behaviour and the psychiatric morbidity underlying such behaviour.

Marshall, Kylee. "We Shall Overcome: The Association Between Family of Origin Adversity, Coming to Terms, and Relationship Quality for African Americans." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7488.

Full text
Abstract:
Because adverse childhood and family of origin experiences may have implications for adult relationships, it is important to understand what can help buffer potential negative effects. The current study was designed to understand the relationship between childhood family of origin adversities, coming to terms with family of origin issues and events, and adult romantic relationship quality for African Americans (N = 1613). A path analysis was conducted using data from the RELATE assessment (see www.relate-institute.org). Results indicated that, taken together, coming to terms, self-esteem, and depression likely partially mediated the relationship between family of origin adversity and adult relationship quality. Results also suggested that if African Americans were able to come to terms, they reported less depression and higher levels of self-esteem. Clinicians may find it useful to focus on assisting African American individuals in coming to terms with childhood family of origin adversity as part of treatment for depression, self-esteem issues, and adult romantic relationship problems. Additional clinical implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
This study examined the relationships between childhood family of origin (FOO) adversities, coming to terms with them, and adult intimate relationship satisfaction for Native American individuals. The sample consisted of 186 Native American individuals in committed relationships who responded to the RELATionship Evaluation (RELATE). Among the items in the questionnaire were measures of childhood FOO adversity, whether respondents had come to terms with FOO problems, relationship quality and depression. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that coming to terms buffered the negative effects of childhood family of origin adversities on depression and relationship quality. Results suggest that coming to terms may help Native American individuals deal with FOO adversity and improve intimate relationship quality. Coming to terms with childhood FOO adversity should be considered in the treatment of Native American individuals in intimate relationships. Clinical implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
This study examined the direct actor/partner effects of self-esteem, coming to terms, and relationship quality and the indirect effects of self-esteem on relationship quality when mediated by coming to terms. The sample included 160 interracial couples of which 69.4% were made up of an African-American male and a Caucasian female, while 30.6 were made up of an African-American female and a Caucasian male. These couples completed the RELATionship Evaluation (RELATE), a survey questionnaire. This study used three variables from the RELATE: self-esteem, coming to terms, and relationship quality. Results from Structural Equation Modeling indicated that self-esteem had a negative effect on relationship quality in men and women. Female partner's negative self-esteem increased her male partner's likelihood of coming to terms, but male partner's negative self-esteem decreased his own likelihood of coming to terms. Coming to terms did not predict relationship quality in this study. The relatively satisfied couples of this sample suggest that interracial couples may not have poorer relationship quality than intraracial couples, as some previous research purports.

May, L. "Towards developing an outpatient assessment tool of LSL that incorporates clinical evaluation and the impact on patient and family in terms of Health Related Quality of Life." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2016. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1532786/.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: There is wide variation in how lumbosacral lipoma (LSL) is assessed in the clinical setting; furthermore, there is little data regarding the impact that LSL has on the Health Related Quality of Life (HRQL) of children. Secondly, there is limited information regarding the relationship between LSL type, and clinical and HRQL outcomes. This thesis aims to: 1. Develop an assessment tool for use in the out-patient setting, which would provide a standardised method by which to objectively assess outcomes of interventions including surgery, and allow comparison and audit across different neurosurgical units. 2. Identify the key HRQL factors that affect the child and parent. 3. Identify if there is a relationship between LSL type, and clinical and HRQL outcomes. Method: 1. A systematic review was undertaken to identify the assessment criteria in children with LSL. 2. A cross sectional analysis of a cohort of 54 children with LSL aged between 5 and 18 years of age was performed. 3. The results from points 1 and 2 were combined to develop an objective assessment tool. 4. HRQL was assessed using a number of generic questionnaires and by asking the children and parents directly, what was important to them in terms of their disease. The results were combined to ensure all aspects of the impact of LSL were identified, including the effect of the disease on the well-being of parents. 5. The relationship between LSL type, and clinical and HRQL outcomes was systematically analysed in a cohort of 54 children, to examine the association between these symptoms and the type of LSL. Results: 1. It was evident from the systematic review that there was no consistency in the literature regarding assessment methods for this group of children. Based on this review and the prospective study, an objective tool was developed that can be easily useable in the clinical setting. 2. The clinical issues most significantly associated with HRQL were mobility, pain and urology. Urology issues were not identified by self-report from the questionnaire results, but from verbal self-reporting. 3. The transitional group have a higher risk of clinical abnormalities and deterioration and the dorsal group the least, in the majority of clinical outcomes. There was a trend for children with transitional lipomas to have a lower HRQL and the dorsal group to have the highest HRQL, on the majority of measures. Discussion: In addition to a standardised clinical assessment tool, an appropriate HRQL questionnaire and a standardised pain assessment tool will be utilised to provide a holistic assessment of children with LSL. The study results suggest children could be risk stratified according to LSL type, with more intensive initial investigations and potential interventions in children with transitional lipomas.

Abstract:
This work examines how Graham Swift's works tackle the issue of a potential reconciliation with the past. Reconciliation will be analysed together with the character's metamorphoses over time (one of the meaning that has to be given to the metamorphoses of history in my thesis's title) and the fictional transformations of time and history. The psychoanalytic evolutions of identities and the relationships of the characters with time and history will be studied. If it is difficult to precisely assess the success of reconciliation, we will focus on some of its underlying strategies and narrative treatments. The individual level will serve as a model for the collective level

Abstract:
Through exploring the use of documentary style in a selection of contemporary American comedy series, this thesis closes in on the question whether texts that stylistically differ from traditional sitcom can still be regarded as part of the sitcom genre. The contemporary American TV series that are being analyzed are The Office, Arrested Development, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Michael J. Fox Show. As the series’ place within sitcom becomes apparent, the analysis ultimately leads to a critical investigation of the term “comedy verite.” Questioning the concepts applicability for the American series and their development leads to the investigation of new definitions. This analysis of contemporary televisual styles reveals a myriad of deeper issues and elucidates how stylistic developments point towards broader developments of the TV medium – towards a medium more and more defined by, or even drenched in, “reality.”

Abstract:
Americans over age 65 constitute a larger percentage of the population each year: from 14% in 2010 (40 million elderly) to possibly 20% in 2030 (70 million elderly). In 2015, an estimated 66 million people provided care to the ill, disabled, and elderly in the United States. In 2000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 15 million Americans used some form of long-term care: adult day care, home health, nursing home, or hospice. In all, 13% of people over 85 years old, compared with 1% of those ages 65 to 74, live in nursing homes in the United States. Transitions of care, among these various levels of care, are common: Nursing home to hospital transfer, one of the best-studied transitions, occurs in more than 25% of nursing home residents per year. This article follows one patient through several levels of care.

McDougall, Jennifer. "Fostering family relationships in long-term care." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/62604.

Full text
Abstract:
Family relationships are a significant part of a person’s life. Unfortunately, moving a relative from a family home into a long-term care (LTC) home requires the readjustment of family relationships from a familiar to a foreign environment and puts these relationships and associated family identity at risk. With the shift in focus to person-centred care and its need for the maintenance of family connection, the fostering of family relationships in LTC homes becomes an important part of properly enacting this approach to care. This critical ethnography explored the ways in which family relationships are fostered in LTC and identified the efforts made and barriers that exist in the broader organizational and social context of LTC that influence how these relationships are fostered. Data from a larger critical ethnography was collected through semi-structured interviews with and participant observation of 12 family members, seven staff members, and three residents from a LTC home in an urban city in British Columbia, Canada. Family members came into the LTC home to spend time with their relative and maintain a connection with them, but a lack of opportunity to take part in activities that recognized the importance of these connections prevented family relationships from being fostered. Task-focused care overlooked the importance of relational care and further prevented family relationships from being maintained. Physical and cognitive decline also made it difficult for family members to engage and connect with their relative, resulting in a significant impact on the fostering of family relationships. Driving distances and a lack of opportunity to maintain connections with relatives outside of the LTC home added to the challenge of fostering family relationships. Family members want to maintain family identities and associated relationships but require support in doing so. The findings from this study have implications for nursing practice, administration, education, and research.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study builds on prior research that has identified informal work accommodations to family as a valuable means for balancing competing work and family responsibilities. As organizations increasingly capitalize on team-based work designs, it is important to consider the informal ways in which interdependent coworkers constructively assist one another in the management of work interfering with family (WIF) and family interfering with work (FIW). The intent of this thesis is to develop a better understanding of the effects of the coping mechanisms employees in team-based jobs utilize to reduce work interfering with family. Thus, this thesis examined (a) the relationship between people working in team-based job designs and WIF and FIW (b) the effects of moderating variables, such as job interdependence, specialization, and cohesion on the Coworker Informal Work Accommodations to Family (CIWAF) and work interfering with family and the CIWAF and family interfering with work relationships. Three convenience samples were employed; each completed a survey packet including the CIWAF, WIF, FIW, job interdependence, specialization, and cohesion measures. Hypothesized relationships considering the effects of the composite CIWAF construct on WIF and FIW were not supported. Employees in interdependent job designs experienced more WIF than employees in less interdependent job designs. Follow up analyses considering the 6 CIWAF subdimensions showed consistent results. The three more common CIWAF behavior engaged in by employees in an attempt to reduce WIF were CIWAF - CWM (Continuing Work Modifications), - STM (Short-Term Work Modifications, and - HB (Helping Behavior). Although hypotheses were not supported, results suggest that CIWAF behaviors are an option employees consider to reduce WIF. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:
Developing collaborative practice is an ongoing process requiring frequent upgrades as team members and processes are added. Recently, faculty in ETSU’s Department of Family Medicine have been experimenting with a mechanism for iterative upgrades to team care practice known as Champion Teams. Champion Teams are based on the Institute of Medicine’s "learning health care system" approach in which practitioners develop an internal strategy for implementing new evidence based practices on an ongoing basis. In this presentation, our interprofessional team will describe team-based education and practice at ETSU as it relates to the Champion Team concept including its origins, evidence-base, and the logistics of how it functions. We will provide examples of four Champion Team projects including: 1) integrating behavioral health, 2) increasing attendance at medical visits, 3) increasing vaccination rates, and 4) a transition to a new pharmacological regimen for congestive heart failure patients. The exemplars will demonstrate how quality improvement data informed progressive changes and confirmed implementation outcomes. During discussion, we will encourage participants to identify their own targets for champion teams.

Abstract:
In this contribution, we investigate the relationships between paid and unpaid work in the lifeworlds of employed informal carers against the background of the Austrian long-term care regime. We pursue a twofold argument: On the one hand, we emphasize that combining paid and unpaid work currently poses serious difficulties for employed family carers in their everyday lives and impacts their current and future financial and social security. On the other hand, we argue that the relationships between employment and informal care are in fact not well understood by the common concepts of "reconciliation" or "work-life balance". These concepts are not able to explain the complexities of employed carers' lived realities and fail to adequately address the fundamental contradiction in the idea of a "reconciliation" of paid and unpaid work.

Law, Katharine. "Long-term dementia care : staff experiences and family satisfaction." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/75482/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the care of people with dementia in long-term care settings. It considers both the experiences of staff working with people with dementia in such settings as well as the perceptions and satisfaction of family members of people with dementia who reside in long-term care. It is hoped that these papers will contribute to understanding how staff working with people with dementia in long-term care settings can be supported to improve the quality of care provision to this population. Chapter 1 is a systematic literature review investigating the staff factors which contribute to family satisfaction with ongoing care provision for their relatives with dementia who reside in long-term care. Empirical evidence from 14 articles was critically evaluated in order to identify relevant staff factors which contribute to family satisfaction. Relevant staff factors in three broad areas were found to contribute to family satisfaction with care provision for their relatives with dementia. Each area is explored and consideration is given to the implications for future research and clinical practice. Chapter 2 is an empirical study exploring the lived experience of healthcare assistants working with clients with dementia in residential care homes. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyse the data derived from semi-structured interviews with eight healthcare assistants. Three superordinate themes and nine subordinate themes emerged following the data analysis. Each theme is explored and consideration is given to the implications for future research and clinical practice. Chapter 3 is a reflective account of the researcher’s personal experiences of working with people with dementia. It explores the change in the researcher’s perceptions and attitude towards working with people with dementia as their knowledge and experience has increased over time and the impact that this has had on their outlook regarding working with people with dementia in the future.

In addition to presenting the Champion Team concept as a strategy for implementing new team care initiatives, interprofessional providers will present two case examples from each adult and pediatric primary care. At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: Define the term "learning healthcare system" and its application to Champion Teams. Describe the utility of and keys to implementing Champion Teams. Describe two examples of Champion Teams and the application of this mechanism to making data-informed changes toward team-based care in their own setting.

Abstract:
Background: Innovation is widely recognized to be instrumental for the sustained competitiveness of businesses, including family businesses. However, many family firms are unable to achieve innovation on their own, necessitating the shift towards collaborative innovation. Yet, due to the overlap of family and business, innovation in family firms is characterized by the so-called“innovation paradox” where family firms usually possess a greater ability to innovate but lack the willingness to do so. Accordingly, considerable attention has been given to the factors that affect the willingness of family firms in an attempt to understand and possibly resolve the innovation paradox. Purpose: The purpose of the present study is to explore how the degree of family involvement in the top management team (TMT) influences the family firm’s willingness to engage in collaborative innovation and how that influences the preferred type of collaborative innovation. By exploring the link between the degree of family involvement in TMT and the willingness in the context of collaborative innovation, our study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the innovation paradox associated with family businesses, and thereby offer important insights to practitioners, both from the family and non-family perspective. Method: Our methods were based on qualitative research with an exploratory research design and multiple case-study methods of eleven family firms. Through semi-structured interviews with both family and non-family TMT members, we gained insights into the role of family influence on family firms. We also used a cross-case analysis to compare the cases and indicate similarities and differences in order to draw our conclusions. Conclusion: The results of the study show that the degree of family involvement in the top management teams influences the family firms’ willingness to engage in collaborative innovation. Depending on the degree of family involvement as represented by the respective configurations, five patterns of influence manifestations (IM) are identified.

Abstract:
This study investigates the effects of a participative-type management approach termed self-managed work teams (SMWTs) and work spillover into the family environment. The perspective of isomorphism by Aldous (1969), and Rapoport and Rapoport (1965), was used as a paradigm to examine both positive and negative effects of the work-family relationship. A total of 76 employees from the Department of Defense's Quality Division was used in the regression analysis, due to recent transitions into SMWTs. Results reported overwhelming support for the perspective of isomorphism: over 40% of the variation in positive work spillover was explained by SWMT characteristics. Communication with other teams was the single most important factor found to have a significant effect on positive work spillover.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the association between family history of mental disorders, especially psychosis, and long-term social, occupational and clinical outcome in schizophrenia. In addition, the association of pregnancy, birth and early development related factors with occupational and clinical outcome in schizophrenia were analysed. Two meta-analyses and the Northern Finland Birth Cohorts 1966 and 1986 (NFBC1966 and NFBC1986) were used to gather the data. In the meta-analyses family history of psychosis was associated with poorer long-term clinical, occupational and global (i.e. combined occupational, social and clinical) outcome in schizophrenia. NFBC1966 is an unselected, population-based sample of 12,058 live-born children and includes 161 individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. NFBC1986 is also an unselected, population-based cohort and consists of 9,432 live-born children and includes 189 individuals with psychosis. In the NFBC1966 study family history of any mental disorder was associated with more severe positive and emotional symptoms, but was not associated with other clinical symptoms or social, occupational or global outcome in schizophrenia. The family history of psychosis was not associated with outcomes. Regarding pregnancy, birth and early development related factors, it was found that young maternal age was associated with higher probability of being hospitalised with schizophrenia. In the NFBC1986 study a family history of any mental disorder was associated with higher number of days spent at hospital and higher number of hospitalisations, but it was not associated with occupational outcome or disability pension in psychotic disorders. A family history of psychosis was not associated with outcomes. This study suggests that family history of psychosis has a small association with clinical, occupational and global outcome in schizophrenia. There is less research regarding the association between family history of any mental disorder and outcome in schizophrenia, but based on the cohort studies family history of any mental disorder could be even stronger outcome predictor than family history of psychosis. Family history of mental disorders and especially psychosis is a strong risk factor for schizophrenia, and based on this study it seems to also associate with poorer outcome
Pohjois-Suomen vuoden 1966 syntymäkohortti on valikoitumaton, yleisväestöpohjainen kohortti, johon kuuluu 12 058 elävänä syntynyttä lasta. Kohortti sisältää 161 skitsofreniaa sairastavaa henkilöä. Pohjois-Suomen vuoden 1986 syntymäkohortti on myös valikoitumaton, yleisväestöpohjainen kohortti. Siihen kuuluu 9 432 elävänä syntynyttä lasta, joista 189:llä on psykoosi.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of brain injury upon the family of the brain-injured patient. Although some research into the psychosocial sequelae following head injury and the direct and indirect effects of severe head-injury upon the family have been conducted, these studies have largely been of a quantitative nature. For this reason, and with a view to expanding upon the existing findings, the present study was qualitative in nature in order to gain an in-depth understanding of relatives' experience of living with and caring for a severely head-injured family member. In addition, ways in which family members coped with the impact of the brain injury were elicited. Participants were caregivers to 11 severely head-injured patients who were representative of a range of socio-economic groupings and racial classifications. Severity of head injury was controlled for and participants were interviewed two or more years after the head injury had occurred. Demographic and injury related data were elicited by means of a questionnaire. Thereafter, data was collected by means of in-depth semi-structured interviews. A number of indices were developed based on a qualitative and descriptive analysis of the data. The study found that the mam source of distress experienced by caregivers related to emotional rather than physical symptomatology. All types of family relationships were profoundly affected by the patient's brain injury, although the caregiver's relationship with the patient appeared most vulnerable. Formal sources of support were considered inadequate and most caregivers relied heavily on emotional support, particularly from an intimate source. Coping responses were dependent upon coping resources available. Families of brain-injured patients who were racially and socio-economically disadvantaged were subjected to additional stress related to the unavailability of services and the randomness with which services that were available were dispensed. Rehabilitation services appeared to be failing to meet the needs of "brain-injured families" (Brooks, 1984) as they concentrated on the patient's physical handicap rather than emotional sequelae of the head injury.

Abstract:
Research indicates children's exposure to family violence results in long-term negative consequences, hindering social skill development and impacting on the ability to function as healthy, productive adults. Also, there exists a widely accepted theory, called the 'cycle of violence', which hypothesises that children who have experienced violence at the hands of their parents tend to grow up to become violent parents themselves. Some evidence for this theory has been found following research with groups of abusive parents and people who have committed crimes, This study explores the specific impacts of childhood exposure to family violence on the subsequent mothering of a group of women drawn from the general population. A qualitative approach using a methodology that combined feminist and narrative approaches was used. Nine women who have been exposed to family violence in childhood including physical, emotional/psychological, sexual abuse and witness to violence between parents participated in interviews which explored their experiences of mothering Each woman was interviewed twice to collect stories of childhood and of mothering experiences. These were analysed revealing that the women's mothering was affected by their childhood exposure to family violence in several ways, ranging from direct emotional impacts to indirect impacts of conceptualisations formed in the light of childhood experiences. This study adds to the existing knowledge of the long-term impacts of childhood exposure to family violence by focussing specifically on subsequent mothering. The findings encourage social work and health care personnel to appreciate that women exposed to family violence in childhood have specific issues with their mothering and there is a need to address these issues. It also challenges the weight given to the cycle of violence theory in intervention and prevention strategies in child abuse and family violence sectors

Abstract:
Health professionals as well as families are being confronted with long-term care and caregiver issues that accompany the increasing incidence of individuals surviving traumatic brain injury. A sample of parents and brain-injured offspring from 20 families served as informants. The purpose of this study was to identify a qualitatively generated theory describing the parent's experience following a brain-injured child's return to the home setting. An exploratory qualitative design using grounded theory methodology was used during data collection and analysis. All the brain-injured offspring had survived a moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury; were living with at least one parent; and were ages 17 to 34. A three-phase theory, Investing in the Comeback, was generated using grounded theory methodology. The theory's three stages, centering on fostering independence and seeking stability, describe the work of the parent living with a brain-injured offspring. The first phase, Centering On, involves the parent's focusing attention and behavior primarily on the brain-injured offspring. During Fostering Independence, the second phase, the parent initiates and maintains efforts to promote the offspring's resumption of independent functioning. The final phase, Seeking Stability, consists of the parent working to establish a regime that maintains the brain-injured offspring's optimal performance, while minimizing the strain on other family members. Theoretical sampling guided the identification of categories, properties, conditions, and consequences of each phase. Four quantitative measures supplied descriptions of sample characteristics and included demographics, cognitive deficit ratings of the child by the parent and the investigator, and the parent's perception of the family's functioning.

Abstract:
This exploratory study was designed to identify a range of variables distinguishing long-term unattached (LTU) from long-term committed (LTC) adults between the ages of 30 and 50. Specifically, it attempted to identify explanations for, and consequences of, long-term unattachment.
LTU subjects selected were those who had not been in a committed, intimate relationship for eight or more years; LTC subjects selected were those who had been in a marital, or equivalent, relationship for eight or more years.
The study was done in two parts. The preliminary study was qualitative and consisted of interviews of 14 subjects--seven LTUs and seven LTCs. LTU and LTC subjects were closely matched on demographic and socioeconomic variables. Emerging themes were added to the range of ideas from the review of literature. A questionnaire was developed from the comprehensive list of ideas.
The final study was quantitative; 77 subjects were administered the questionnaire designed for the study, as well as the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI). LTUs' responses to the questionnaire and scores on the MCMI were compared with those of LTC subjects. All variables were subjected to discriminant function analysis, and univariate analysis.
The results showed that: (a) LTUs came from families characterized by significant separations and losses, distant relationships with parents, and little communication within the family; (b) LTUs felt significantly more alienated from others as children and adults than LTCs; (c) LTUs were significantly higher than LTCs on MCMI scales schizoid, avoidant, passive-aggressive, schizotypal, and borderline, i.e., scales of personalities characterized by problems with intimate, committed relationships; (d) LTUs were not significantly more influenced than LTCs by sociocultural changes such as the human potential movement, the women's liberation movement, and the emphasis on romance in our culture; and (e) LTUs suffered significantly more than LTCs from despair and lack of meaning in their lives, and lacked satisfying ways of meeting others with whom they would like to be involved. Implications, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research are proffered.

Staf, Susanne. "Ownership succession process in practice : Importance of long-term planning." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Business Administration, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-988.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract

Problem According to previous research a successful succession requires a long-term plan. This is since the main problem causing companies to fail in succes-sions is seen to be the absence of planning, or that planning is not done well enough. But when the next generation is found outside the family or the family business, the succession is done quite fast, so long-term planning in advance does not seem to be that important after all. Therefore I question the importance of long-term planning, and what it includes, since I believe the outcome is decided by several interacting factors, and not by one alone.

Purpose The purpose with this thesis is to contribute to the debate concerning the need of long-term preparation before transitions of family businesses are done. This is done by comparing the characteristics of two successful suc-cession processes. One is a family business that has undertaken a shift within the family, and the other is a family business that has been sold ex-ternally. It will also take into account the kind of advices that comes from interviews with representatives of one bank and two audit firms, in order to find out their general view of the process.

Method This study was conducted through a qualitative method. The data was col-lected by interviewing representatives from two family businesses that have undertaken successions. In addition data was collected from representatives from one bank, and two audit firms. The characteristics in the data from these interviews have been compared to each other, and also to literature and research within the subject.

Conclusion Based on this study, I believe a view that takes into account all aspects is needed, since all aspects are equal important when a company undertakes a succession. As a result of this, long-term planning should not be seen as an aspect more important than any other. From the ancestors´ point of view long-term planning is foremost about how well-prepared the succession of the company has been, and the time until the succession is done. Long-term planning seen from the successors´ view is the time from when the succes-sion is done, and forward. This includes for example how the handing over process should be done, and how to secure that important knowledge stays within the company.
