Abstract:
The article analyzes family anthroponyms associated with lexemes expressing family relationships. The study revealed a large number of surnames belonging to this group. The special majority are anthroponymic units formed by adding such terms of kinship as ata ‘father’, baba ‘grandfather’, eiən ‘grandson’, аҡai ‘elder brother’, etc. These anthroponyms are considered one of the most ancient. The high frequency of use in the book «Bashkir Shezhere» of such personal names associated with lexemes denoting kinship relations, such as Adykai, Atikey, Atagai-biy, Kuste, Mirzakilde, Mirzash, Myrzai, Myrzash Babysh, Sabai, Tenei, Tenekai (Tenkei), confirm the archaic nature of the onyms of this species. The study also proved the formation of most of the anthroponyms we are considering from lexemes with the meaning of consanguinity. In the article, for the first time, an analysis was made of the participation in the formation of anthroponyms of such lexemes with the meaning of kinship relations that are used in dialects of the Bashkir language, such as aby, aҡai ‘elder brother’, babҡai, babyҡai, dəүəтəй ‘grandfather’, tөpsөк ‘the youngest’. In the course of this study, it was suggested that anthroponyms based on dialect lexemes with the meaning of kinship are inherent exclusively in these dialects. It was also revealed that many Turkic peoples have many personal names formed from kinship terms, in particular, for example, the Kyrgyz people have many proper names with the ata component, and the name of the young dancer Kirghiz Atai is currently known.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the key family legal terms family, close relatives, family members, in-laws, former family member, relatives, legally defined by codified normative legal acts. The importance of defi ning these terms is determined due to the fact that the national marriage and family legislation is faced with the task of strengthening the family as a natural and basic unit of society. In the study, a number of conclusions were made and there was made a conclusion that a number of family legal terms need to be corrected. Arguments are given in favor of stating in the new edition of Article 60 of the Code of the Republic of Belarus on Marriage and Family, devoted to the issues of determining subjects that are in close relationship. It is concluded that it is inappropriate to avoid mentioning de facto marital relations in the Marriage and Family Code, while Civil Procedure Code directly mentions them. Using the techniques of comparative studies, the author independently developed a table that refl ects the content of the terms relatives, close relatives, family members, in-laws, former family members, and some others which aredefined out in codified legal sources of the Republic of Belarus.

Abstract:
Family structure is a widely used independent variable. However, in recent years researchers have questioned its predicting power. They also strive to improve its use. This study drew on Holman's (2001) theoretical model and examined the association between the family structure independent variables (Family Structure, Family Instability, and Parental Romantic Partners) and the outcome variables (Coming to Terms, Self-esteem, Maturity, and Depression). The analysis was conducted with a sample of 3,705 individuals (2,316 females and 1,389 males) randomly selected from the entire population that completed the Relationship Evaluation Questionnaire (RELATE). Results showed that Family Instability was a stronger predictor than Family Structure and Parental Romantic Partners. Among all of the outcome variables, Coming to Terms had the strongest association with each of the independent variables. Implications of the results are discussed.

Childs, Carrie. ""I want this, I want that" : a discursive analysis of mental state terms in family interaction." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/9354.

Full text
Abstract:
Using the theoretical approach of discursive psychology, this thesis examines the interactive uses of mental state talk, in particular the term want , in everyday family interaction. In mainstream cognitive psychology mental state terms are examined as words which signify internal referents. How individuals come to competently participate in social interaction is formulated as a problem of how individual, isolated minds come to understand the contents of other minds. This thesis challenges these individualistic notions and examines notions of wanting as interactionally managed participants concerns. The data are taken from two sources; a set of video recordings taken from a series of fly-on-the-wall documentary programmes which each focus on a particular family and videotapes of mealtimes recorded by three families. Recordings were initially transcribed verbatim and sections related to the emerging themes within the thesis were subsequently transcribed using the Jefferson notation system. These transcripts were then analysed, alongside repeated viewings of the video recordings. The thesis considers a range of analytic themes, which are interlinked via one of the primary research questions, which has been to examine how, and to what end, speakers routinely deploy notions of wanting in everyday talk-in-interaction. A major theme has been to highlight inherent problems with work in social cognition which uses experimental tasks to examine children s Theory of Mind and understanding of desires . I argue that the assumptions of this work are a gross simplification of the meaning wanting for both children and adults. A further theme has been to examine the sequential organisation of directives and requests in both adults and children s talk. Finally, I examine speakers practices for rejecting a proposal regarding their actions and for denying a formulation of their motivations by a co-interactant. The conclusions of the thesis show that expressions of wanting are practical expressions which work within a flow of interactional and deontic considerations and that making claims regarding one s own or others wants is entirely a social matter. I argue that rather than being examined for what they may reveal about the mind , mental state terms may be fruitfully examined as interactional matters.

Full text
Abstract:
Numerical schemes for the partial differential equations used to characterize stiffly forced conservation laws are constructed and analyzed. Partial differential equations of this form are found in many physical applications including modeling gas dynamics, fluid flow, and combustion. Many difficulties arise when trying to approximate solutions to stiffly forced conservation laws numerically. Some of these numerical difficulties are investigated. A new class of numerical schemes is developed to overcome some of these problems. The numerical schemes are constructed using an infinite sequence of conservation laws. Restrictions are given on the schemes that guarantee they maintain a uniform bound and satisfy an entropy condition. For schemes meeting these criteria, a proof is given of convergence to the correct physical solution of the conservation law. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:
The goal of the study was to understand the nature of the relationship among self construal, family functioning and sibling number in terms of gender. Five hundred twenthy-nine high school students participated in the study. Participants were selected from seven general public high schools in Ankara. Data was gathered via Personal Information Questionnaire, Autonomous-Related Self in the Family Scale (Kagitç
ibagi, 2007a) and Family Assessment Device (Epstein, Balwin &
Bishop 1983). Results of the study indicated that, for both genders, relational selfconstruals had significant correlations with healthy family functioning. It was also evidenced that autonomous self-construal scores of males were significantly higher than females and related self construal scores of females were significantly higher than males. Furthermore the family functioning dimensions that families tend to be v healthy or unhealthy were displayed. All findings were dicussed in line with the relevant literature.

A lot of relations have been newly regulated by the new Civil Code (2000) which came into force on the 1st of July, 2001. The greatest alternations involve matrimonial and family relations. There is no separate Matrimonial and Family Code left as such. After the 1st of July, 2001 matrimonial and family relations are regulated by the 3rd book of Civil Code (2000) which is intituled Family Law. Great changes were also made in regulation of extinctive prescription in family law. Essentially was innovated the general rule anticipating to apply extinctive prescription for claims arising from matrimonial and family relations. This master’s study analyses the conception of family law, the conception of extinctive prescription, norms regulating application of extinctive prescription for the claims arising from matrimonial and family relations. Also compares the norms regulating extinctive prescription settled in Matrimonial and Family Code (1969) and in new Civil Code (2000), analyses the practise of Highest Court. These questions are analysed in order to realize what changes were made in regulation of extinctive prescription implementing law reform, what problems do arise in application of extinctive prescription in family law and how it is possible to solve them. Extinctive prescription is law institute known in all countries. This master’s study briefly overlooks the regulation of extinctive prescription in some foreign countries (Federation of Russia; France; England and Wales).

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 233-306. A study of the phenomenon of somatization as it occurs in the primary care setting. The phenomenon was studied in terms of aspects of illness behaviour and risk of psychiatric morbidity. It is suggested that abnormal illness behaviour in the form of somatization may be an important factor in the non-recognition of mild non-psychotic psychiatric illness in the primary care setting. The results of the study indicate that an assessment of the patients' attitudes and beliefs about symptoms, and an exploration of psychosocial issues, may lead to a better understanding of why the patients have sought help, and may lead to early identification and appropriate treatment of somatizing behaviour and the psychiatric morbidity underlying such behaviour.

Abstract:
Because adverse childhood and family of origin experiences may have implications for adult relationships, it is important to understand what can help buffer potential negative effects. The current study was designed to understand the relationship between childhood family of origin adversities, coming to terms with family of origin issues and events, and adult romantic relationship quality for African Americans (N = 1613). A path analysis was conducted using data from the RELATE assessment (see www.relate-institute.org). Results indicated that, taken together, coming to terms, self-esteem, and depression likely partially mediated the relationship between family of origin adversity and adult relationship quality. Results also suggested that if African Americans were able to come to terms, they reported less depression and higher levels of self-esteem. Clinicians may find it useful to focus on assisting African American individuals in coming to terms with childhood family of origin adversity as part of treatment for depression, self-esteem issues, and adult romantic relationship problems. Additional clinical implications and directions for future research are discussed.

AbstractThis chapter analyzes family policies across the globe, describing patterns in the development of family allowances, leave schemes, and ECEC services both in developed and developing regions. Using the OECD family database and the ILO global social protection database, it compares the developments in family policy across different regions. The chapter reveals that the way regions and countries in the world have followed the main goals of family policy varies significantly, not only in terms of coverage and quality, but also in terms of design and context of implementation. Despite the efforts made in developing regions are still limited and rarely based on the idea of a universal set of interrelated transfers and services, there is still room for them to learn from the experience of the leaders in family policy.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines to what extent policy ideas and norms promoted at the transnational and international level around gender and family policy are influential at the domestic policy level in OECD countries. Existing research demonstrates a mixed record in terms of transnational and international non-state actors’ influence on domestic policy in the Global North. This chapter argues that international norms are diffusing to domestic policy actors and processes rather unevenly. While international organizations (IOs) and transnational advocates can facilitate the spread of ideas of best practices around gender equality in general and family policy in particular, for liberal welfare states (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, USA), IOs are still less authoritative than the national level when it comes to on-the-ground policymaking.

AbstractThis chapter introduces a multilevel perspective on family policy, ranging from family policies at the levels of supra-national (and inter-national) organizations such as the United Nations, OECD, and the European Union; national or federal policies and legislation; the subnational municipalities, states, or regions in which people live; and finally the organizations or in which people work. At each of these levels of governance, family policies are formulated, voted for, implemented, and carried out—or not. And it is this whole set of multi-level policies that ultimately affect families’ and individuals’ choices, opportunities, constraints, and capability in terms of work, care, and wellbeing. This handbook brings together research on each of these four levels, is sensitive to heterogeneous policy impacts, and brings together scholars from different academic communities.

Abstract:
The Covid emergency has forced universities around the world to transfer teaching activities online. Even if online teaching has made it possible to carry out the planned teaching activities, it is necessary, in retrospect, to evaluate the impact that this teaching method has had on the different types of students, in terms of preparation, characteristics and social background. In this framework, the presents paper aims to evaluate if distance learning can be considered socially less useful because it increases the divide between the advantaged and disadvantaged students. The study is based on the analysis of data collected at the University of Naples Federico II in June 2020. More than 19 thousand students took part in the survey, carried out to monitor distance learning activities. The aim of this work is to analyse whether and how much the distance learning activities has had an impact on the students' families both in terms of the organisation of the spaces and daily rhythms and from an economic point of view, having required additional expenses. This objective will be achieved through the use of a factorial method that will provide a composite indicator measuring the family impact of distance learning. We will then try to explain if the family impact takes different forms and intensity depending on the students' characteristics, the availability of computer equipment and the type of teaching used. Quantile regression will allow to differentiate the study of effects for different levels of family impact. Finally, it will also be evaluated whether the experience lived in terms of the family impact of the distance learning, conditions the judgement on the preferred teaching method for the future, totally online, oriented towards a complete return to face-to-face teaching or a mixed solution that takes advantage of the experience lived.

Abstract:
AbstractHaving a job is an important indicator of economic and social wellbeing, and two-earner families are becoming the norm rather than the exception. As a result, many more women, including mothers, are in the labour force now than ever before. Balancing family and work responsibilities therefore becomes ever more important, not just for women but also men who are sharing the caring load with their partners, especially when young pre-school children are present. However, employment is not equally distributed across families, and some families have noone in a job which leads to financial vulnerability. Even one-earner families that depend on a low-skilled, low-wage earner may struggle to get by and provide their children with the opportunities to succeed in life and achieve mental, physical and financial wellbeing. This may lead to the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage and poor outcomes from parents to children. Gender inequality and ongoing inequalities relating to gender divisions in work and family may lead to women being particularly vulnerable in terms of earnings capacity and retirement savings when a relationship ends. One-parent families are specifically at risk as they often have no partner with whom to share the care-taking role, making work-family balance difficult to achieve. In this chapter we review the Australian evidence on these issues and provide policy implications.

Abstract:
During academic year 2006–07, a family of four closely related multi-disciplinary senior design projects was initiated. Each project team consisted of eight undergraduate students. The family of projects has continued during the academic year 2007–08, with three additional design projects comprised of 19 students. The intent of the family of design projects is two-fold. The first objective is to introduce students to the concept of designing a product within the context of a family of closely related products, similar to the approach that a corporation may use in its strategic approach to the marketplace. The second objective is to provide an open-source, open-architecture, modular, and scalable robotic vehicle platform usable by a wide range of researchers within the Kate Gleason College of Engineering looking for a vehicle to position cameras, sensors in networks, and for other data-gathering tasks. Students were given the challenge to design and manufacture a platform based on a single design, scalable across four payload orders of magnitude from 1kg to 1,000kg. The 10kg and 100kg variants were studied in AY2006–07, and the 1kg variant was introduced in AY2007–08. The largest, 1,000kg, planned for the future, will be about the size of a Honda Civic, so safety and fail-safe engineering is important. Each project in the family is expected to build on the technology used and lessons learned from prior and concurrent projects, much like the “next model year” in the auto industry, and information sharing requirements among concurrent engineering teams. Hardware, software, and design methods are reused whenever possible, and students are expected to develop their subsystem in the context of an evolutionary platform design. In this manner, the end-product from one design group becomes the starting point for another team. Responsibilities overlap so teams must work cooperatively, which mimics the industrial environment. Starting times on various projects may be staggered, and students must deal with documentation sharing issues, and preservation of design intent across multiple-project teams and academic terms. The paper will discuss the current status of the program, the lessons learned to-date, and future plans for the program.

Abstract:
It is a fact that the family business is becoming increasingly interesting for researchers in the field of management. From here the initial basis for their special treatment is drawn, since their holistic treatment with other MSMEs still does not emphasize their uniqueness in many aspects. If the importance of these family businesses is supported by the fact that they participate with 70% in the GDP of Europe as well as the fact that they employ up to 60% of the labor force in Europe, then it is more than clear that the scientific community should pay much more attention to these businesses. The paper aims to cover the biggest challenges and problems faced by family businesses, especially in terms of their management, inheritance, organizational communication and vision for their development, as segments where the biggest problems are observed.

Abstract:
Predictive design analytics is a new paradigm to enable design engineers to extract knowledge from large-scale, multi-dimensional, unstructured, volatile data, and transform the knowledge and its trend into design decision making. Predictive, data-driven family design (PDFD) is proposed as one of the predictive design analytics methods to tackle some issues in family design. First, a number and specifications of product architectures are determined by data (not by pre-defined market segments) in order to maximize expected profit. A trade-off between price and cost in terms of the quantity and specifications of architectures helps to set the target in the enterprise level. k-means clustering is used to find architectures that minimize within architecture sum of squared errors. Second, a price prediction method as a function of product performance and deviations between performance and customer requirements is suggested with exponential smoothing based on innovations state space models. Regression coefficients are treated as customer preferences over product performance, and analyzed as a time series. Prediction intervals are proposed to show market uncertainties. Third, multiple values for common parameters in family design can be identified using the expectation maximization clustering so that multiple-platform design can be explored. Last, large-scale data can be handled by the PDFD algorithm. A data set which contains a total of 14 million instances is used in the case study. The design of a family of universal electronic motors demonstrates the proposed approach and highlights its benefits and limitations.

Abstract:
As opposed to ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), self-propelled, unmanned autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are becoming increasingly important since, unlike ROVs they can operate completely self-sufficiently, i.e. independent of the carrier platform and cable at practically any depth and for long periods of time, require only minor technical and logistic support and can be used in regions which are inaccessible to manned submersibles or ROVs (e.g. under ice regions). In other words, AUVs are distinguished by a wide range of applications, the extremely high quality of data collected, their very cost-effective operation and the large standoff capability to the carrier platform, the latter bringing about a distinct improvement in terms of carrier platform safety e.g. for military missions. Due to these advantages over conventional systems, AUVs can be employed for a whole variety of applications, such as the following in the commercial sector: • Sea Bed Mapping, • Pipeline and Route Survey, • Inspection/Control, • Site Clearance, • Debris Survey, • Science – Search – Environment – Geology, • Harbour and ship’s hull inspection. Moreover AUVs will play an important role in the military scenario like mine countermeasure as well. Obviously, one single type of AUV will be unable to cover this entire spectrum if — above and beyond the aforementioned applications — one considers the different operating depths ranging from coastal regions (about 10 m) to deep water (approx. 4000 m) and the various possible carrier platforms (helicopters, ships, submarines, shore stations). On the other hand, the development and use of one specific type of AUV for one or a very limited number of mission types would be very expensive, both in terms of costs involved and necessary logistics, and would hardly be acceptable on the market. The solution to this problem is the “modularity” of the AUV subsystems as well as a family concept for the vehicle design. To implement this strategy, ATLAS ELEKTRONIK has forced the development and marketing of an AUV family for a wide array of missions. The family starts with the SeaFox-IQ, a very small and lightweight (40 kg) AUV for 300 m diving depth, based on the extreme successful mine disposal ROV SeaFox. The big brother is the SeaStout, a 100 kg AUV, designed for 300 m too. The SeaOtter Mk1 and SeaOtter Mk2 AUVs are 1500 kg and 1100 kg vehicles for 600 m operations. The leading edge is the AUV DeepC, a 2500 kg experimental vehicle developed for 4000 m depth and up to 60 h endurance. The ATLAS AUV family offer a lot of hard- and software commonality to ensure that serviceability is maintained, while having a high degree of “customisation” in key areas like payload sensor selection ensuring they will meet customer needs.

Abstract:
The development of products with a modular structure, where the constituent modules could be derived from a set of common platforms to suit different market niches, provides unique engineering and economic advantages. However, the quantitative design of such modular product platforms could become significantly challenging for complex products. The Comprehensive Product Platform Planning (CP3) method facilitates effective design of such product platforms. The original CP3 method is however typically suitable for scale-based product family design. In this paper, we perform important modifications to the commonality matrix and the commonality constraint formulation in CP3 to advance its applicability to modular product family design. A commonality index (CI), defined in terms of the number of unique modules in a family, is used to quantify the commonality objective. The new CP3 method is applied to design a family of reconfigurable Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for civilian applications. CP3 enables the design of an optimum set of distinct modules, different groups of which could be assembled to configure twin-boom UAVs that provide three different combinations of payload capacity and endurance. The six key modules that participate in the platform planning are: (i) the fuselage/pod, (ii) the wing, (iii) the booms, (iv) the vertical tails, (v) the horizontal tail, and (vi) the fuel tank. The performance of each UAV is defined in terms of its range per unit fuel consumption. Among the best tradeoff UAV families obtained by mixed-discrete Particle Swarm Optimization, the family with the maximum commonality (CI = 0.5) required a 66% compromise of the UAVs’ range/fuel-consumption performance. The platform configuration corresponding to the maximum-commonality UAV family involved sharing of the horizontal tail and fuel tank among all three UAVs and sharing of the fuselage and booms among two UAVs.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The aim of this scoping review is known what the definition of intimate partner violence is used in the scientific literature. Background: In the scientific literature, intimate partner violence (IPV) has been defined using various terms: aggression, domestic violence, interpersonal violence, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, spousal violence, family violence, etc. (Sprague, 2013; Hamel et al., 2015; O'Hara, 2018, Rahmani et al., 2019). This variety of terminology has hindered a consensus definition, causing a fragmented view of the phenomenon. There are several explanations, one of the main ones being that IPV has been studied by numerous scientific disciplines, each of them associating it with terms specific to its field, focusing on some variables and overshadowing the relevance of others (Nicolás et al. , 2014). Specifically, the term Domestic Violence (DV) and IPV are used interchangeably. However, DV refers to any form of violence perpetrated within a family relationship. It can refer to violence, but also to violence against children or older members of the same family by another family member (Tavoli et al., 2016). It should be noted that the confusion between these terms has been generated since 1993 (Pence & Paymar, 1993) to the present (Bates, 2020).

Full text
Abstract:
India's national family welfare program has two objectives—to address the needs of families, notably women and children, and to reduce population growth rates. In reality, the program has been disproportionately focused on achieving demographic targets by increasing contraceptive prevalence. In this process, women's needs have been overlooked, in terms of poor reproductive health (RH). There is a need to reorient program priorities to focus more holistically on RH needs and on woman-based services that respond to health needs in ways sensitive to the sociocultural constraints women and adolescent girls face in acquiring services and expressing health needs. This report presents a profile of substantive needs in the area of women's RH. It contains a brief overview of the demographic situation and the thrust of the program in India, points out gender disparities and constraints women face in acquiring quality health services, focuses on the RH situation and highlights the gaps between needs and available services, and sets out priorities for policy. It raises the need for greater attention to RH and services that are more focused on women, both adult and adolescent, in India, and discusses activities appropriate for further support.

Full text
Abstract:
This report contains descriptions of 13 family planning (FP) projects recently implemented in Bangladesh. The results in terms of the contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) are analyzed to investigate the degree to which improved FP service delivery in Bangladesh can increase contraceptive use in the present status of demand, investigate the programmatic factors most associated with increased prevalence, and make these projects more widely known. Criteria for inclusion included coverage of a geographic area where household distribution of contraceptive supplies was available, and where at least one measurement of CPR has been made through credible survey efforts since July 1988. The projects varied in design, intensity, programmatic focus, geographic area, implementing agency, and evaluating agency. All were rural or largely so. Primary conclusions are that improvements in the national program can be expected to lead to substantial increases in contraceptive prevalence; increased visitation rates, and greater efforts in basic training, density of fieldworkers, and use of NGO fieldworkers may be particularly effective in meeting unmet demand; although direct provision of services by NGOs seems most associated with high performance, the implication of this for the national program requires careful analysis.

Abstract:
The majority of the existing full-scale fire service research studied the impact of tactics on the residential fireground, specifically in single-family structures. This study builds upon prior research by conducting thirteen experiments in three-story, multi-family dwellings to quantify the impact of coordination between ventilation and suppression actions. Experiments were conducted in four, garden-style apartment buildings; each of which had two lower-level units, four first-floor units, and four second-floor units. The apartments shared a common stairwell that was enclosed for all of the experiments in this study. To examine the effectiveness of tactics in the fire apartment, common stairwell and applicable exposure apartments, four experiments were conducted in lower-level apartments, seven were conducted in first-floor apartments, and two were conducted in second-floor apartments including both bedroom and kitchen/living room fires. The fire size varied based on the amount of initial ventilation provided. The main control variables included the location of initial water application, the ventilation method, and the timing of ventilation relative to water application. The suppression tactics included interior water application, exterior water application followed by interior water application, and a combined interior and exterior water application. The ventilation tactics examined in these experiments included horizontal, vertical, positive pressure, and hydraulic ventilation. Similar to previous experiments in acquired single-family structures, there was no meaningful increase in temperature outside of fire rooms when ventilation tactics were executed in close coordination with (shortly after or shortly before) the onset of suppression. In contrast, for experiments where ventilation occurred with delayed suppression, temperature exposures increased throughout the fire apartment, and in experiments where the apartment door was left open, temperatures and carbon monoxide exposures increased throughout the common stairwell. Suppression actions, whether interior or exterior, resulted in a decrease in temperatures and gas concentrations at locations where occupants may potentially be located. The enclosed common stairwell, a unique feature of this experimental series, acted as capture of combustion products. Opening the apartment door to gain access should be thought of as an important ventilation action, both in terms of its potential to cause fire growth and its potential for smoke movement into the stairwell, limiting the egress for potentially trapped occupants in exposure units. Tactics such as door control, positive pressure ventilation, and hydraulic ventilation which were used both simultaneous with and sequentially post-suppression were shown to limit gas flows into the stairwell. After effective suppression, structure ventilation operations should similarly be cognizant of gas flows, with the aim of establishing flow throughout all areas where occupants may be located.

Full text
Abstract:
Prior full-scale research with the fire service was primarily designed to isolate specific tactics, most often either ventilation or suppression, which allowed researchers to develop science-based recommendations related to the specific components of fireground operations studied in relatively controlled conditions. The current project went beyond earlier research by conducting twenty experiments in eight acquired, single-family residential structures and that combined fireground tactics to quantify the impact of coordination between ventilation and suppression actions. This experimental series included second-story bedroom fires (14 experiments) and first-floor kitchen fires (6 experiments). The main control variables studied included the position of initial application of water, the ventilation method, and the timing of ventilation relative to water application. The ventilation tactics examined in these experiments included horizontal, vertical, positive pressure, and hydraulic ventilation, while the suppression tactics included both interior water application and initial exterior water application followed by interior water application. While some elements of the experiments (e.g. structure floor plan and weather) resulted in increased variability, the lessons learned highlighted the importance of having a systematic approach to the implementation of tactics. Most importantly, there was no meaningful increase in temperature outside of fire rooms when ventilation tactics were executed in coordination with (shortly after or shortly before) the onset of suppression. The effectiveness of suppression actions in extinguishing the fire were dependent on the ability of those actions to 1) cool surfaces in the fire room and 2) wet unburned fuel. Exterior suppression actions on second-floor bedroom fires resulted in a decrease in temperatures throughout the second floor, followed by regrowth prior to final suppression through interior streams. When exterior suppression was performed on first-floor kitchen fires, where more complete fuel wetting was possible, regrowth was not observed prior to interior suppression. When surface cooling or fuel wetting are not possible due to the elevation of the fire room, missing ceiling, or obstacles, firefighters should consider alternative means of water distribution to improve the effectiveness of suppression actions from outside the fire room. Suppression actions, whether interior or exterior, generally resulted in a decrease in temperatures and gas concentrations at locations where occupants may potentially be located. Conditions improved most quickly at locations closest in proximity to the inlet of the flow path established between the front door and the fire room. For this reason, opening an exterior door to gain access should be thought of as an important ventilation action, both in terms of its potential to cause fire growth and its potential to improve conditions for potentially trapped occupants. After effective suppression, structure ventilation operations should similarly be cognizant of gas flows, with the aim of establishing flow throughout all areas where occupants may be located.

Avis, William. Funding Mechanisms to Local CSOs. Institute of Development Studies, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.089.

Abstract:
Civil society can be broadly defined as the area outside the family, market and state. As such, civil society encompasses a spectrum of actors with a wide range of purposes, constituencies, structures, degrees of organisation, functions, size, resource levels, cultural contexts, ideologies, membership, geographical coverage, strategies and approaches. This rapid literature review collates available literature on funding mechanisms and barriers to local CSOs gaining access to funding and the extent to which funding leads towards organisational development and sustainability. Broadly, it is asserted that in terms of funding, local CSOs often struggle to secure funding equivalent to that of INGOs and their local representatives. Kleibl & Munck (2017) reflect that indigenous non-state actors do not receive large shares of development funding. For example, only 10% of the total funding for US-funded health projects in Uganda was allocated to indigenous non-state actors.Given the diversity of CSOs and the variety of contexts, sectors they work in and the services they supply, it is challenging to summarise funding mechanisms available to local CSOs and the barriers to accessing these. Recent analyses of CSO funding report that while the total CSO funding in many contexts has continued to increase in absolute terms since 2015, its relative importance (as a share of total Overseas Development Assistance) has been decreasing (Verbrugge and Huyse, 2018). They continued that ODA funding channelled through CSOs (i.e., funding that is programmed by the donor government) remains far more important in volumes than ODA channelled directly to CSOs (which is programmed by CSOs themselves). The literature identifies three principal mechanisms by which donors provide financial support to civil society actors: a) Direct support to individual or umbrella organisations; b) Via Southern government; c) Via Intermediaries – largely Northern NGOs.
