Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to further examine the relationship between family leisure variables and the dependent variables of family functioning and satisfaction with family life among a broad, national sample of Canadian families using the Core and Balance framework. Specifically, this study examined how both family leisure involvement (core and balance) and family leisure satisfaction contributed to the explanation of variance in family functioning and satisfaction with family life. Because the data were nested in families, this study accounted for family-level variance by incorporating mixed modeling. The sample consisted of 943 families across Canada including one parent and one child between the ages of 11 and 16 (n = 1886). Findings added to previous Canadian family leisure studies by reporting empirical relationships between family leisure variables and outcome variables and doing so from a broad national sample. Findings were also consistent with trends in other countries reporting satisfaction with core family leisure involvement as the single strongest predictor of both family functioning and satisfaction with family life among Canadian families. Furthermore, while core family leisure satisfaction was the driving force in the explanation of variance in family satisfaction, findings suggest there must be participation in both core and balance family leisure. Additional implications for Canadian families, scholars, professionals, and policy makers are discussed.

Betts, Jennifer. "Kinetic family drawings as indices of family functioning." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/15863.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 131-140.
Kinetic Family Drawings (KFDs) are Projective drawings which require the drawer to give 'action' to the depicted figures. A number of studies have been conducted following its inception in 1970. (Burns & Kaufman, 1970; 1972). Upon examination of these studies, however, it is evident that those studies pertaining to aspects of family functioning obtained significant results to a greater degree. It was the contention of the present study, that the KFD may be measuring aspects of family functioning. The present study thus incorporated a measure of family functioning, the McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD) (Epstein, Baldwin & Bishop, 1983), to assess whether KFD depictions were indices of family functioning. The results were obtained through KFDs of 96 individuals who constituted 24 families. These individuals consisted of (n=48) parents and (n=48) adolescents. Due to constraints of research design, there were unequal numbers of males and females i.e. 38 males and 58 females.

Dyer, Camilla F. "Exploring family functioning post stroke." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24547.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to explore the impact of an older person’s stroke on family functioning. Stroke patients, aged 65 or over, and members of their family were compared to a control group of older people without stroke and members of their family. The researcher was also interested in how individual functioning may act as possible contributory factors, consequently affecting family functioning as a whole. A cross sectional between groups design was employed. Stroke patients (aged 65 and over) and family members were compared to a healthy control group of older adults and family members. The participants completed assessments measuring family functioning, perceived family quality of life, perceived social support, and current mood. The main result was that, in families where an older person had a stroke, the stroke did not negatively impact on family functioning. Group comparisons revealed that the stroke and control group did not differ on measures of family functioning, perceived social support and mood. However, older people with stroke reported a lower perceived quality of life than older people without stroke. The latter result suggests a possible area for intervention for clinicians working with older people with stroke. Interpreted within a family life cycle and individual developmental perspective, the results suggest that older people suffering strokes may be expected, and as such this expectation may act as a coping mechanism for dealing with the illnesses and losses that people are faced with in their later life. Methodological limitations of the study and suggestions for further research are discussed.

Goranson-Coleman, Jane Susan. "The relationship between family rituals and family functioning in the remarried family." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29716.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper proposes that remarried families who have a higher level of family ritual observance will also have a higher level of family functioning. This hypothesis was tested in a study involving 60 individuals comprising 30 couples remarried over two years, and with a stepchild under 13 years of age. Each partner responded to a questionnaire composed of family functioning measures (FACES Ill-Adaptability and Cohesion subscales, Family Satisfaction Scale, Quality Marriage Index) family ritual measures (Family Traditions Index, Family Celebrations Scale, Family Time and Routines Index), and demographic information. Data was examined using Correlation, Analysis of Variance, and Regression analysis. Results indicate that women experiencing a higher level of family routines also experience greater family satisfaction. Additionally, women who had counselling in the remarried family, report greater marital quality, and women who work outside the home report a higher level of adaptability. For men, a higher level of cohesion and family celebrations were found for men where the remarried family includes a child from the current marriage. These results suggest that awareness of family rituals present in remarried families and the effect of particular demographic variables can be useful information for both family therapists and the families themselves.

Abstract:
Typical life circumstances for military families may impact their participation in prevention programs, yet little is known about what factors influence their participation. The current study examined predictors of attendance in the Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10–14, for Military Families, a universal in-person program designed to improve family functioning and reduce youth substance misuse and other problem behaviors. Participants included 159 parent–child dyads randomly selected to be offered the 7-week family program. Analyses examined demographic characteristics, deployment experiences, time spent waiting for the program to begin, and psychosocial functioning as predictors of attendance in a series of regression models. Of the 39 percent of families that attended any program sessions, the majority (71 percent) attended at least four of the seven sessions. Attendance varied significantly across the geographic areas in which groups were held. Prior service utilization, youth conduct problem behavior, parental history of deployment, and family conflict were each positively associated with attendance, whereas parent tobacco use was negatively associated with attendance. These results highlight the challenges in recruiting military families into in-person prevention programs and suggest that extra efforts may be needed to engage families that do not perceive that they have a need for support.

Abstract:
This article deals with analyzing the features of psychological separation in late adolescence and early adulthood. The author outlines the components of psychological separation. It is proved that peculiarities of the parental family affect the process of separation. The flexibility and cohesion of the parental family influence functional, emotional and attitudinal independence from a mother. While just flexibility affects separation from a father (means attitudinal and emotional independence). Conflictual independence from a mother does not relate to the peculiarities of the functioning of the parental family. Conflictual independence from a father has a connection with the cohesion of the family system, including the common parameters of time what family is spending together and emotional connection. It was experimentally proved women students have the significant differences among all the components of the separation from mother and father. Girls mostly depend on the mother figure.

Dolja, Valerian V., Amit Gal-On, and Victor Gaba. Suppression of Potyvirus Infection by a Closterovirus Protein. United States Department of Agriculture, March 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2002.7580682.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The plant virus family Polyviridae is the largest and most destructive of all plant viruses. Despite the continuous effort to develop resistant plant varieties, there is a desperate need for novel approaches conferring wide-range potyvirus resistance. Based on experiments with the tobacco etch potyvirus (TEV)-derived gene expression vector, we suggested approach for screening of the candidate resistance genes. This approach relies on insertion of the genes into a virus vector and evaluation of the phenotypes of the resulting recombinant viruses. The genes which suppress infection by the recombinant virus are selected as candidates for engineering transgenic resistance. Our analysis of the TEV variants expressing proteins of the beet yellows closterovirus (BYV) revealed that one of those, the leader proteinase (L-Pro), strongly and specifically interfered with the hybrid TEV infection. Since closterovirus L-Pro is evolutionary related to potyviral helper component-proteinase (HC-Pro), we suggested that the L-Pro interfered with HC-Pro function via a trans-dominant inhibitory effect. Based on these findings, we proposed to test two major hypotheses. First, we suggested that L-Pro-mediated suppression of potyvirus infection is a general phenomenon effective against a range of potyviruses. The second hypothesis stated that the suppression effect can be reproduced in transgenic plants expressing L-Pro, and can be utilized for generation of resistance to potyviruses. In accord with these hypotheses, we developed two original objectives of our proposal: A) to determine the range of the closterovirus-derived suppression of potyviral infection, and B) to try and utilize the L-Pro-mediated suppression for the development of transgenic resistance to potyviruses. In the first phase of the project, we have developed all major tools and technologies required for successful completion of the proposed research. These included TEV and ZYMV vectors engineered to express several closteroviral L-Pro variants, and generation of the large collection of transgenic plants. To our satisfaction, characterization of the infection phenotypes exhibited by chimeric TEV and ZYMV variants confirmed our first hypothesis. For instance, similar to TEV-L- Pro(BYV) chimera, ZYMV-L-Pro(LIYV) chimera was debilitated in its systemic spread. In contrast, ZYMV-GUS chimera (positive control) was competent in establishing vigorous systemic infection. These and other results with chimeric viruses indicated that several closteroviral proteinases inhibit long-distance movement of the potyviruses upon co-expression in infected plants. In order to complete the second objective, we have generated ~90 tobacco lines transformed with closteroviral L-Pro variants, as well as ~100 lines transformed with BYV Hsp70-homolog (Hsp70h; a negative control). The presence and expression of the trans gene in each line was initially confirmed using RT-PCR and RNA preparations isolated from plants. However, since detection of the trans gene-specific RNA can not guarantee production of the corresponding protein, we have also generated L-Pro- and Hsp70h-specific antisera using corresponding synthetic peptides. These antisera allowed us to confirm that the transgenic plant lines produced detectable, although highly variable levels of the closterovirus antigens. In a final phase of the project, we tested susceptibility of the transgenic lines to TEV infection. To this end, we determined that the minimal dilution of the TEV inoculum that is still capable of infecting 100% of nontransgenic plants was 1:20, and used 10 plants per line (in total, ~2,000 plants). Unfortunately, none of the lines exhibited statistically significant reduction in susceptibility. Although discouraging, this outcome prompted us to expand our experimental plan and conduct additional experiments. Our aim was to test if closteroviral proteinases are capable of functioning in trans. We have developed agroinfection protocol for BYV, and tested if co- expression of the L-Pro is capable of rescuing corresponding null-mutant. The clear-cut, negative results of these experiments demonstrated that L-Pro acts only in cis, thus explaining the lack of resistance in our transgenic plants. We have also characterized a collection of the L-Pro alanine- scanning mutants and found direct genetic evidence of the requirement for L-Pro in virus systemic spread. To conclude, our research supported by BARD confirmed one but not another of our original hypotheses. Moreover, it provided an important insight into functional specialization of the viral proteinases and generated set of tools and data with which we will be able to address the molecular mechanisms by which these proteins provide a variety of critical functions during virus life cycle.

Development of approaches to community based family planning outreach in Egypt: Assessment of Raidats Rifiats Program. Population Council, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1995.1025.

Full text
Abstract:
Egypt’s family planning program officially began in 1965. Impressive gains in contraceptive use have been made since 1980, and the contraceptive prevalence rate increased from 24 percent in 1980 to 47 percent in 1992. Egypt’s National Population Policy addresses the nation’s population growth through multiple interventions designed to reduce fertility, including family planning (FP) services. FP accessibility is promoted through a network of public and NG0 FP clinics. A number of years ago, the Egyptian Family Planning Program began using the Raidats Rifiats program to extend services into rural communities. There is concern regarding the program’s ability to recruit women for the clinic-based program. Senior policymakers and program managers need to assess the role Raidats has played within their communities and their contribution to the FP program. The present research provides a comprehensive assessment of the various subsystems functioning in this program. Six governorates were included to represent Egypt’s major four sectors: West and Middle Delta, East Delta, Middle of Republic, and Upper Egypt. Overall, the study highlighted gaps in the existing Raidats system that should be strengthened to improve system performance.

Abstract:
This study’s objective was to assist the Kenya Ministry of Health (MOH), the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD), NGOs, and donor agencies in planning the expansion and improvement of family planning (FP) and other reproductive health (RH) services provided in Kenya. Data on the functioning of program subsystems and the quality of care provided were collected in May 1995 from 254 maternal and child health/family planning (MCH/FP) facilities throughout the country using a situation analysis approach. The study sample included a representative sample of facilities from the MOH and NGO sectors. It also included a census of all facilities operated by the Nairobi City Council so that comparisons could be made with the situation analysis study undertaken in 1991. Data were collected through an inventory of facility infrastructure and equipment, staff interviews, observations of FP client-provider consultations, and exit interviews with FP and MCH staff. This is the second time that a national situation analysis study was undertaken in Kenya, and a comparison was made with the results from the first study, which was undertaken in 1989.

Community involvement in reproductive health: Findings from research in Karnataka, India. Population Council, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh17.1007.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1996, the government of India decided to provide a package of reproductive and child health services through the existing family welfare program, adopting a community needs assessment approach (CNAA). To implement this approach, the government abolished its practice of setting contraceptive targets centrally and introduced a decentralized planning strategy whereby health workers assessed the reproductive health needs of women in their respective areas and prepared local plans to meet those needs. They also involved community leaders to promote community participation in the reproductive and child health program. Since 1998, several evaluation studies have assessed the impact of CNAA on the program’s performance and community participation. These studies showed that the performance of the maternal health-care program improved, whereas the functioning of the family planning program initially declined but later recovered. The approach achieved little in boosting community involvement. This project tested a new model of health committee to help stimulate community participation in reproductive and child health activities at the village level. The experiment, described in this report, was conducted in the Hunsur block of the Mysore District in Karnataka for two years. Researchers evaluated the impact in terms of community involvement and utilization of reproductive and child health services.

A diagnostic study of the implementation of Department of Health volunteer workers program. Population Council, 1994. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1994.1003.

Full text
Abstract:
This report presents findings from a 1993 survey of 200 Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) from two Davao provinces and two Lanao Provinces in the Philippines. Premised on the belief that the BHWs are important in improving the delivery of health and family planning (FP) services in the countryside, the study examined the factors that affect the performance of these health workers. The study is basically descriptive in nature, with the view to diagnosing problems in the implementation and functioning of the program and suggesting appropriate solutions. The survey method was utilized as a main data collection tool. Beside the survey of volunteer workers, 300 clients were also interviewed to solicit their responses to questions regarding the performance of their BHWs. Focus group discussions were conducted to delve into issues identified in the quantitative analysis that needed further probing. Data in this report show that BHWs provide indispensable services to their communities.
