The present study examined adolescents’ perceptions of their caregivers’ parenting style as well as their physical activity participation, motivation, and attitudes. High school students completed questionnaires regarding their physical activity participation, motivation, and attitudes, and they assessed both their male and female caregivers’ parenting style. Results indicated that for males, a permissive parenting style was related to more physical activity participation and that males favor physical activity that features long and hard training and as a way to stay healthy and fit. An authoritative parenting style was related to higher rates of physical activity for females, and their attitudes focused on social aspects of physical activity as well as a release of tension. For both genders, identified regulation was associated with higher rates of physical activity, indicating that higher levels of self-determined motivation are important for promoting active behaviors. Cross-gender relationships between caregiver and child emerged and social and gender norms seemed to influence parenting style and attitudes specific to gender. Additional results and implications are discussed.

Abstract:
The current study investigated family, individual and sibling relationship variables of adult sibling loss, using a cross-sectional survey design. A purposive sampling procedure was used to recruit adult subjects that had experienced the death of an adult sibling within the last five years. Ninety-four subjects responded to the initial request with 84 subjects returning questionnaires for an 89% response rate. Family variables of communication, cohesion, and adaptability and individual variables of individuation, self esteem as well as level of grief were operationalized using standardized instruments through a mailed questionnaire. It was predicted that significant relationships would be found between family variables and current level of grief. It was also predicted that individual characteristics (individuation, self esteem, church attendance, and cause of death) would be significantly related to the level of grief. Characteristics of the sibling relationship (frequency of contact, communication, perceived emotional closeness, geographical proximity, age differential and same sex) were predicted to reveal significant relationships. Bivariate analysis yielded support for only four of the sixteen hypotheses. No family variables were related to the subjects’ level of grief at the time of the survey. The individual characteristics of individuation, self esteem and church attendance were all significantly related to the level of grief. Support was also found for the sibling relationship variable of geographical proximity with level of grief. Multivariate regression analysis was used in testing two models that investigated demographic, family, individual and sibling relationship variables with current level of grief. The first model included all variables that were statistically significant at the bivariate level and relevant demographic variables. In addition, the level of grief at death and the amount of time since death were included in the model. The level of grief at death was the strongest predictor of current level of grief. The first model explained 61.7% of the variability of current level of grief. The second model selected those variables that had significant t-values from the first model. The level of emotional involvement was the strongest predictor of the level of grief at death. This model explained 58% of the variability of current level of grief. The level of grief at death was the strongest predictor of the current level of grief in both models.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research project was to explore the family structural variables of cohesion and adaptability as well as extracurricular activities, peer influences, and personal attitudes as they were manifested in adolescents classified as nonusers, users, and/or abusers of alcohol/drugs. Two hundred and thirty-seven adolescents responded to written questionnaires including the Alcohol and Drug Use Index, a reduced form of the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES III), the Student Attitude and Behavior Questionnaire, and a Demographic Questionnaire. Information was obtained on age and grade level, gender and ethnicity, parental characteristics, and student's educational aspirations in an effort to identify factors associated with teenage alcohol/drug use. Some of the major findings suggested that the users/abusers groups reported less involvement with their families, educational pursuits, and extracurricular activities when compared to their nondrug using counterparts. The statistical analysis also confirmed some aspects of structural family therapy theory and refuted other aspects. The results of this study were also compared to prior research on adolescent substance use. These results further expanded the understanding of factors associated with adolescent use/abuse of alcohol/drugs.

Abstract:
During the second half of the twentieth century, housing preferences towards homeownership converged in the majority of European countries. By the turn of the millennium, homeownership was the leading housing tenure in southern Europe. Taking this into consideration, this thesis aims to improve our understanding of the interrelationship between housing tenure, household formation and fertility in the beginning of the twenty-first century. With a focus on southern Europe, this thesis performs a comparative analysis guided by three objectives: (1) to explore the distinctive feature of the southern European housing system regarding homeownership and household formation patterns; (2) to explain the recent evolution of housing tenure distribution while accounting for individual and contextual factors; and (3) to analyse the role of housing tenure status in fertility. To tackle the first objective, this thesis uses cluster analysis with the European Union Statistics of Income and Living Conditions data to test the factors contributing to the homogeneity of the southern European housing system in the beginning of the twenty-first century. Additionally, by estimating logistic regression models, this thesis highlights the significance of heterogeneous patterns within the southern European group. Furthermore, the assumption that the homeownership rates in southern Europe are high is challenged using renewed measures of tenure rates that take the level of household formation into account. Regarding household patterns formation, by means of multinomial probit regression models, this thesis provides innovative findings on the housing decisions of active young adults in southern Europe and in three other European countries used as a representation of different welfare state regimes (France, Germany and the United Kingdom). With regards to the second objective, this research addresses the current increase in renting preference using the micro data of the Spanish census (2001 and 2011). Estimating multilevel logistic regression models, this study accounts for both individual and contextual factors, highlighting the role of housing prices stability in the likelihood of be a tenant and the influence of the internal geographic heterogeneity on individual housing choices. At the individual level, over time, there is a convergence process toward a greater acceptance of renting regardless of citizenship, type of partnership, or educational attainment of the young couple. Yet, individual heterogeneity became more determinant in the case of age and degree of urbanisation. Although with different signals, both processes lean towards an upsurge of renting at the early stages of a couple’s life. Concerning the third objective, this thesis first studies the Spanish case using the Spanish Survey of Household Finances (2008) and estimating probit regression models for three time frames. The results show that the relationship between homeownership and fertility is becoming increasingly problematic. Second, using the Eurosystem Household Finance and Consumption Survey (2008- 2011), this thesis compares southern European countries among themselves and with two European countries with distinct fertility rates and housing systems (France and Germany). Probit regression models and parametric frailty models reveal that the positive relationship between homeownership and having a first-child birth is not a southern European exception and that in Spain, France and Greece, to be a homeowner lowers the time ratio to the birth of the firstchild. Portraying the dynamic feature of housing systems, there are reasons to believe that the southern European housing system is changing. This thesis explores those signs of change with regards to their impact on the known features of the southern European housing system by looking at it from different standpoints (micro and macro level) and by emphasizing housing tenure status both as an outcome and as a determinant of an event.

Abstract:
In this thesis I consider family as a basic unit of the decision-making in the economy and I study the implications of these decisions for health inequalities and labor supply, very important socioeconomic outcomes. In the first chapter of this thesis, named "Health Policies and Intergenerational Mobility", I study the role of health inequalities and health policies for income persistence over generations within family in the United States. While the role of education and education policies received a lot of attention in the literature on intergenerational mobility, almost nothing is known on how medical policies affect intergenerational mobility and inequality. This is rather surprising, since health, like education, is highly persistent across generations and health of children have an important impact on how they perform in school. In this paper, I develop and estimate a human-capital based overlapping generations model of household decisions that take into account multidimensionality and dynamic nature of human capital investments. I distinguish two forms of human capital: health capital and human capital, and model explicitly government policies in education and health. The counterfactual simulations show that health policies is an important determinant of intergenerational mobility of income across generations for agents of the bottom of income distribution and there are important interactions between health and education policies. In the second chapter of this thesis "Marriage and Health: Selection, Protection, and Assortative Mating" (joint with Nezih Guner and Joan Llull), we study how marital status affects health inequality. Using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) and the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), we analyze the marriage health gap for working-age individuals. Controlling for observables, we find a gap that peaks at 12 percentage points at ages 55-59. If we allow for unobserved heterogeneity in innate health (permanent and age-dependent), potentially correlated with timing and likelihood of marriage, we find that the effect of marriage on health disappears below age 40, while about 6 percentage points difference between married and unmarried individuals remains at older (55-59) ages. This indicates that the observed gap is mainly driven by selection into marriage at younger ages, but there might be a protective effect of marriage at older ages. Exploring the mechanisms behind this result, we find that better innate health is associated with a higher probability of marriage and a lower probability of divorce, and there is strong assortative mating among couples by innate health. We also find that married individuals are more likely to have a healthier behavior compared to unmarried ones. Finally, we find that health insurance is critical for the beneficial effect of marriage. In the third chapter of this thesis, "Household Labor Market Dynamics", coauthored with Nezih Guner and Arnau Valladares-Esteban, we study the role of labor supply decisions within family for the labor market dynamics. We study the joint labor market transitions of married couples between three labor market states: employment, unemployment, and out of the labor force. We assess the importance of different labor market transitions for married males and females. The results show that married men and women differ in their labor market dynamics. The transitions between employment and unemployment are the key driver of the cyclical movements in unemployment for married males. For married females, however, transitions in and out of the labor force play a key role. We calculate the importance of the added worker effect and show that without the added worker effect, female labor participation and unemployment rates in 2000-2010 period would be about 2.5 and 0.3 percentage points higher, respectively. This 0.3 percentage points represents about 6.16% of the female unemployment rate.

Abstract:
This dissertation tries to shed new light on the relationship between migration and fertility by concentrating on two migration contexts and applying different quantitative methods and taking various perspectives. The thesis consists of three independent research papers that are all tied together by the same theoretical framework that has been proposed in the literature to explain the link between migration and fertility (selection, disruption, interrelation of events, socialization and adaptation). Chapter 2 and 3 analyse the fertility behaviour of Senegalese migrants in Europe. While Chapter 2 takes a descriptive approach to family trajectories of male and female migrants and how they evolve in the immediate time before and after the migration move, Chapter 3 compares the fertility behaviour of migrant and non-migrant couples. Finally, Chapter 4 focuses on Latin American child migrants in Spain and their fertility preferences compared to native Spanish youth. The findings contribute to our understanding of the interplay between migration and fertility (preferences) and provide theoretical and methodological implications for the study of migrant fertility.

Abstract:
Two hundred thirty-eight undergraduates from a midwestern university completed the Hazan and Shaver Attachment Instrument to categorize themselves into three attachment styles: secure, insecure anxious/ambivalent, and insecure avoidant. They also completed the Parental Attachment Questionnaire (PAQ), The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scales II (The FACES II), the Family Satisfaction Scale, and a Demographic Questionnaire. This study examined the attachment styles of undergraduates and measures of their parental attachments and family dynamics. It was hypothesized that the securely attached subjects would report significantly greater levels on three variables of parental attachment than would insecurely attached subjects. It was also hypothesized that securely attached subjects would report significantly higher levels on three variables of family dynamics than would insecurely attached subjects.Using multivariate analyses of variance designs, both hypotheses were supported. Subjects who were securely attached, when compared to those who were insecurely attached, reported significantly higher levels of parental attachment, in terms of: providing emotional support, fostering autonomy, and in the affective quality of their attachment to parents. Subjects who were securely attached, when compared to subjects who were insecurely attached, also reported significantly higher levels of adaptability, cohesion, and satisfaction in their families of origin. Results were discussed in relation to previous research on attachment styles and the studies of parental relationships and family dynamics in young adults. Methodological limitations were highlighted. Implications of this study and recommendations for future research were provided as well.

Abstract:
How people survive and behave in different environment are some questions that Human Behavior Ecology seeks to answer. The choices that humans make in such conditions can either be considering parental and economical investments, or the pursuit of self or group interest. Using a Tibetan Pastoralist Society as a case study, this thesis explores how Tibetans adapt their behaviour to different contexts, from an evolutionary ecological, anthropological and demographic perspective. I start the thesis with a brief history and demographical presentation of how these Tibetan herders behave within and outside domestic life. The main analysis part starts from which gender get more parental care, by looking at duration of breastfeeding and the interbirth intervals. I find female-biased parental investment. Possible reasons are the high female workloads and the improved social status of women derived from the high economical contribution made by them. The next analysis focusing on how wealth flows, the fertility and the length of the trial time affects the stability of marriages. Then I examine the effects of kin on child well-being. Within domestic life, concepts like ‘Grandmother Hypothesis’ and ‘Mother Hypothesis’ are well-documented. While this research makes a contrary finding that it is the older male family members who are invested more in child caring than the females. The next analysis considers questions beyond domestic life by examining herders’ social networks. I investigate the motivations behind Tibetans who choose to herd in groups, and others who prefer to herd alone. Economic gift games are used to explore the cooperation strategy within villages, whether pastoralist prefer to share limited resources with their genetic relatives over others. The analysis concluded that stated social norms are slow to change, while actual individual behaviours appear to evolve faster, responding to recent social and political changes in the region.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to conduct an exploratory study of parental involvement in youth sports. The Flow Model developed by Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi is used as the basis of my theory behind the research. Although there has been recognition that it is important to study young athletes, little is known about parental involvement. Thus, my three main research questions are: (a) How do adolescents experience their participation in soccer? (b) What are the family dynamics, as expressed by parents, related to challenging and supporting their children? And (c) How do adolescents experience the relationship between these family dynamics and their participation in soccer? My methods of inquiry of this study included collecting data through two questionnaires: (a) Experience Sampling Method (ESM) and (b) Support/Challenge Questionnaire (SCQ). I also conducted in-depth interviews. My participants included 11 males and 10 females 14-15 years of age. Each of these participants were administered the two questionnaires. Of these 21 participants, eight adolescent athletes and their parents were followed up with in-depth interviews. The results of this research are organized into four main categories including communication, family interaction, goals and beliefs, and expectations. From these themes, three categories for implications were developed to encompass soccer implications, therapy implications, and research implications. Ultimately, acknowledging how adults affect the outcomes of children's stress and enjoyment, parents can deal more successfully with the social, emotional, and psychological needs of their young athletes (Scanlan & Lewthwaite, 1986).

Dykhuis, Melissa Joy. "Asteroid Family Dynamics in the Inner Main Belt." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/565904.

Full text
Abstract:
The inner main asteroid belt is an important source of near-Earth objects and terrestrial planet impactors; however, the dynamics and history of this region are challenging to understand, due to its high population density and the presence of multiple orbital resonances. This dissertation explores the properties of two of the most populous inner main belt family groups - the Flora family and the Nysa-Polana complex - investigating their memberships, ages, spin properties, collision dynamics, and range in orbital and reflectance parameters. Though diffuse, the family associated with asteroid (8) Flora dominates the inner main belt in terms of the extent of its members in orbital parameter space, resulting in its significant overlap with multiple neighboring families. This dissertation introduces a new method for membership determination (the core sample method) which enables the distinction of the Flora family from the background, permitting its further analysis. The Flora family is shown to have a signature in plots of semimajor axis vs. size consistent with that expected for a collisional family dispersed as a result of the Yarkovsky radiation effect. The family's age is determined from the Yarkovsky dispersion to be 950 My. Furthermore, a survey of the spin sense of 21 Flora-region asteroids, accomplished via a time-efficient modification of the epoch method for spin sense determination, confirms the single-collision Yarkovsky-dispersed model for the family's origin. The neighboring Nysa-Polana complex is the likely source region for many of the carbonaceous near-Earth asteroids, several of which are important targets for spacecraft reconnaissance and sample return missions. Family identification in the Nysa-Polana complex via the core sample method reveals two families associated with asteroid (135) Hertha, both with distinct age and reflectance properties. The larger of these two families demonstrates a correlation in semimajor axis and eccentricity indicating that its family-forming collision occurred near the parent body's aphelion. In addition, the Eulalia family is connected with a possible second component, suggesting an anisotropic distribution of ejecta from its collision event.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of firm dynamics, family ownership, and employment protection. It addresses the implications of employment protection on firm productivity and how family owned firms react differently with regard to economic shocks. It also investigates whether family ownership matters for the probability of exhibiting high growth. Abstract:
In this thesis we study two seperate yet related three parameter-families of continuously differentiable maps from the unit circle to unit circle which have a single critical point. For one of the families we show that there is a set of positive measure of parameters such that there is a set of positive measure for which all points in the latter set, the derivative experiences exponential growth. We do so by applying a similar methodology to what Michael Benedicks and Lennart Carleson used to study the quadratic family. For the other family we attempt to show a similar but weaker result using a similar method, but do not manage to do so. We expound on what difficulties the latter family provides and what features Benedicks and Carleson used for the quadratic family that we do not have available.

Kianpour, Saeid. "Syrian Refugee Fathers Perceptions of Identity and Family Dynamics in the U.S. after Displacement." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/99462.

Full text
Abstract:
At the end of 2016, approximately 65.6 million individuals were displaced forcibly around the world because of generalized violence, persecution, violation of human rights, or conflict such as civil war (UNHCR, 2016). The purpose of this study is to: (a) explore Syrian refugees after displacement in the US, (b) give voice to refugee fathers, and (c) advance knowledge for marriage and family therapists, who are working with refugee families. Eight Syrian refugee fathers who were displaced in the last two years and living in Indiana, US shared their experiences through in-depth interviews. After transcribing and translating the interviews, thematic analysis, a flexible research tool that provides a reach and complex account of data, was used to analyze the data. Four main themes emerged from fathers: displacement stress, loss of extended family connections, experiences of isolation, and identity changes with provider role. A thematic map also is created illustrating how the stress of displacement and being far away from extended families profoundly influence provider identities and family interactions. In addition, the contextual model of family stress is used to customize fathers experience of displacement. The inferences from this study provide guidance for marriage and family therapists, mental health practitioners, and organizations working with refugee families.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the experience of dementia as recounted by family carers and people with the early experience of dementia. Between October, 1992 and May, 1996 sixty four semi-structured interviews were conducted with family carers of people with dementia using a modified grounded theory approach. Constant comparative analysis of the data led to the emergence of a five stage integrated scheme to explain their experiences, namely: Recognising the Need (1); Taking it On (2); Working Through It (3); Reaching the End (4); and A New Beginning (5), with critical junctures attached to each stage which either locked the carer in, or moved the carer through, the model. A second phase of data collection comprised eleven interviews with ten people with the early experience of dementia and their family carers. Analysis of these data resulted in the emergence of the stage of Keeping it Hidden with its supporting strategies: Closing Down; Regrouping; and Covering your Tracks which help to explain how people with early dementia manage their changing cognitive abilities. Following a theoretical integration of the two phases of data collection the process of 'working' emerged in three forms, i.e. Working Apart; Working Together; and Working Alone to explain movement between the above two models. Transcending the data, the study also generated the linking scheme of Maintaining Involvement to help explain the dynamics of dementia. The 'fit and grab' of this linking scheme was subjected to preliminary empirical scrutiny via a third series of interviews with six carers of people with dementia. It is suggested that the grounded theory emerging from this study helps to explain the shared experience of dementia, while also having implications for policy and practice which are briefly explored in the concluding chapter, together with some of the methodological implications and limitations of the study.

Abstract:
We study interdependencies in spousal labor supply and the effectiveness of intrahousehold insurance in a sample of married couples, where the husband loses his job due to a mass layoff or plant closure using data from the Austrian Social Security Database. We show that in our sample of relatively young couples the shock hits households at crucial stages of family formation, which requires careful modeling of the wives' counterfactual lifecycle labor market patterns. In our empirical analysis, we propose three independent control groups of unaffected households to identify the causal effects of husbands' displacement on wives' labor supply. Our empirical results show that husbands suffer large and persistent employment and earnings losses over the first 5 years after displacement. But wives' labor supply increases only moderately and they respond predominantly at the extensive margin. The implied participation elasticity with respect to the husband's earnings shock is very small, about -0:04. While the wives' earnings gains recover only a tiny fraction of the household income loss, public transfers and taxes are a more important insurance at least in the short run. In terms of non-labor market related outcomes, we find a small positive effect on the probability of divorce, but no effect of the husband's job displacement on fertility. The presence and ages of children in the household are crucial determinants of the wife's labor supply response. The most responsive group are mothers, who are planning to return to the labor market after a maternity break, while mothers of very young children or wives without children remain unresponsive. We thus conclude that Austria's strong gender identity norms are an explanation for the limited scope of intra-household insurance.

Abstract:
Diabetes is one of the top causes of death, with the number of people diagnosed constantly increasing. Consequently, finding therapeutic candidates for insulin has become urgent. However, many critical questions are still unclear regarding insulin activation, and the activation process of the other insulin-family proteins, namely insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and II (IGF-II). Deficiency of these proteins can lead to chronic diseases, with insulin being involved in diabetes and IGFs in cancer. To this end, this thesis presents the first molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of insulin to reveal new insights into its activation, which involves the B chain C-terminal (BC-CT) and its hydrophobic core. MD simulations of the IGFs are also presented for the first time, enabling comparison of their activation mechanisms. Additionally, this thesis presents a comprehensive computational study with the aim to predict the effect of mutations on insulin. The key results presented in this thesis are as follows: 1) Insulin activation is associated with the opening of the BC-CT and is stochastic in nature; 2) Insulin comprises three conformations, namely closed (inactive), open (active) and wide-open (active that fits the IR interface), with the closed conformation being the dominant one and the wide-open occurring rarely; 3) The F24 residue plays a hinge role, and Y26 is the critical residue during the activation; 4) IGFs activation is similar to insulin, however their activation involves two opening locations; 5) The two openings in IGF-I occur simultaneously, while in IGF-II independently indicating different activation mechanisms; 6) IGF-II appears to be hyperactive compared to IGF-I; 7) The hinge interaction and the hydrophobic interactions play a crucial role in the stability and activity of IGFs and insulin; 8) The analysis used to study the effect of mutations of insulin can be readily applied to any set of mutations to guide future drug development for insulin.

Abstract:
Although Turkey is a country with strong social cohesion, figures of runaway children in Turkey are increasing dramatically. This research focused on the factors that cause children to run away and on interaction programs to intervene and/or prevent this problem. Until recently, Turkish family life was able to avoid such problems, but with the effect of westernization and social mobility in Turkey, the basic family structure has become more like the family structure in the western countries. Studies reveal that runaway episodes happen in all families regardless of such factors as economic, race, or geographic situations. Teenagers run away for several reasons; however, early intervention is highly suggested by studies to mitigate the problem. Although, parent-child conflict plays a significant role as a reason for youth leaving home, on the other hand family interaction still remains the best alternative to the problem.

Abstract:
Sheep farming in Australia has a long tradition, built up over several generations, of inheritance of the family farm, the occupation of sheep farming and the personal identity around being a sheep farmer. This tradition appears to be under threat, due to a combination of hard times and the long-term and inexorable decline in the terms of trade. I examined this threat to the continuation of family farming in Australia’s sheep industry by describing the demographic structure of the industry, documenting the structural changes and questioning whether the changes actually matter. The work involved demographic analysis of data from recent censuses of population and housing and in-depth interviews with sheep farming families. The average age of Australia’s sheep farmers is increasing, caused mainly by the decrease in entry of young people to the industry. This phenomenon is not confined to Australia’s sheep industry but is widespread and long-term through the industrialised world. Also, as some areas focus on agricultural production and others on amenity consumption, the rural landscape is changing. The changes to the structure of Australia’s sheep industry and the nation’s rural landscapes are driven by substantial forces that cannot be resisted easily. This has implications for policy-makers, extension agents and farm families.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates different aspects of family structure and children’s well-being in Sweden. Applying a child perspective, it analyzes children’s likelihood of stepfamily entry, their emotional well-being in different family forms and educational outcomes in families with complex sibling structures. Analyses are performed using data from nationally representative surveys of both parents and children as well as from administrative registers. The results do not show any socioeconomic differences in the process of family reconstitution, although children of parents with low educational attainment are more likely to be in the risk pool for stepfamily formation. There are however differences by gender, with girls having higher likelihood of stepfamily entry than boys, especially in the younger ages. Children are also more likely to experience a stepfamily formation on the paternal side, thus gaining a stepmother. Gender differences can also be found in the association between family type and emotional as well as educational well-being, with girls showing slightly more adverse outcomes than boys. Children of both sexes do however show lower well-being and school outcomes in post-separation family types than in original two-parent families. Like previous international stepfamily literature the results show that Swedish children in stepfamilies and blended families experience adverse emotional and educational outcomes but that the differences are generally small. The main contrast to previous, mostly American, studies are the lack of socioeconomic differences in stepfamily formation and that adverse emotional outcomes in single parent families as well as stepfamilies seem to be mainly explained by differences in parenting and the parent-child relationship rather than economic deprivation.

Abstract:
The problem addressed is to ascertain how selected factors impacted the adjustment of undergraduate university students. Undergraduate university students (n=382) from the University of North Texas completed measures of basic student information, perceived level of family support and level of parental attachment, and perceived level of college student adjustment. Parental Attachment and Family Support were found to positively correlate to the level of adjustment to college. Analyses of these data reveal a statistically significant difference in student adjustment to college when comparing the participants by age, university classification, and living arrangement. Further analysis reveals that there is a statistically significant difference between gender, race, students' marital status, and parents' marital status when measuring the outcome of perceived family support. Perceived level of parental attachment differs significantly when comparing students by their race, marital status, and their parents' marital status.

Full text
Abstract:
During the evolution of gene families, functional diversification of proteins often follows gene duplication. However, some gene families expand while preserving protein sequence. Why would a cell need to maintain multiple copies of the same gene? In this thesis I have addressed this question for an actin gene family containing 17 genes encoding an identical protein in the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum. Using bioinformatics I identified several highly conserved sequence elements as potential regulatory motifs, yet found that gene expression patterns during development are broadly similar across the gene family. Turning to live cell imaging I showed that family members display different transcription dynamics, with strong 'bursty' behaviours contrasted by more steady, continuous transcriptional activity. By switching promoters I showed that different dynamics are directly determined by endogenous promoter sequences, rather than genomic context. I have explored how cell-to-cell variability in gene expression introduced by bursty transcription propagates to resultant cytoplasmic mRNA and protein and showed that population variance of these molecules is reduced compared to nascent transcription. Finally, I generated cell lines with up to 6 genes knocked out and showed that these cells potentially display a minor defect in growth. Overall these data suggest that expanded gene families are utilised not only to generate sufficient protein for normal cell physiology, but also to enable both robustness and responsiveness to a range of stimuli regulating the expression of essential genes.

Reed, Rebecca Ginny. "Interpersonal Immune and Emotion Dynamics in Couples." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/556225.

Full text
Abstract:
Social relationships affect a range of health outcomes, including even mortality risk. However, important questions remain concerning the precise mechanisms through which close relationships exert their influence. The present research focuses specifically on immunological and interpersonal emotion processes that may link social relationships and health. The specific aims of this study were to: (1) determine: a) how long it takes for adults' inflammatory levels to recover after an interpersonal laboratory stressor, and b) whether there are associations between allostatic load indicators of cardiovascular functioning and lipid/fat metabolism and immune recovery; (2) determine whether partners' immune patterns are linked, above and beyond the expected diurnal rhythm; and (3) examine the moderating effects of interpersonal emotion regulation patterns on partners' immune functioning. A final goal of the present study was to test the feasibility of conducting such a study in a naturalistic setting with multiple ambulatory immune measures per day, across multiple days. Twenty-four committed heterosexual couples collected their own salivary immune samples 4 times each day (upon waking, mid-morning, later afternoon, and before bed) for 5 consecutive days, including 2 days before a laboratory dyadic stressor (discussing an area of disagreement in the relationship), the day of, and 2 days after, to capture normative baseline diurnal variability and immune recovery post-stressor. Four additional saliva samples were collected on the lab stressor day at baseline, immediately after the disagreement conversation, 30-min. post-conversation, and 90-min. post conversation, for a total of 8 samples collected on the lab stressor day. Salivary samples were assayed for interleukin(IL)-6 using ELISAs (Salimetrics, LLC). As predicted, after the interpersonal laboratory stressor, immune recovery occurred within 48 hours of the stressor, and in fact recovered as early as the evening of the stressor. However, on the day of the lab stressor, IL-6 levels appeared to still be elevated at the later afternoon time point, approximately 3 hours after the stressor had ended. Contrary to my hypothesis, allostatic load indicators of cardiovascular functioning and lipid/fat metabolism did not moderate immune recovery. Secondly, as expected, partners displayed physiological (immune) linkage; specifically, couples showed "anti-phase" physiological linkage on the day of the lab stressor, and "in-phase" linkage on all other days, pooled together, suggesting that couples may have engaged in more of a regulatory effort on the day of the lab stressor, whereas on all other days, there was a relaxation of regulation and enhanced emotional connection. Third, couples' interpersonal emotion dynamics moderated the diurnal pattern of IL-6 such that couples who exhibited disconnected negative emotions, disconnected positive emotions, and displayed indeterminate patterns in their positive emotions, showed dysregulated diurnal IL-6 slopes. Lastly, the methodology of the present study proved to be feasible, and the study was accomplished without unforeseen problems. Ultimately, studying these immune and emotion processes as they occur in every-day life may help to uncover patterns in couples' biology and emotions that may accumulate over time to set people on different health trajectories.

In this thesis is a qualitative investigation of the dynamics of family business conflict in Indonesia. The focus is on conflict between family members working together in a business and there is an exploration of the factors contributing to the escalation or de-escalation of conflict, the behavior of family members in dealing with conflict, and the roles of non-family executives in family business conflicts. The findings reveal that a conflict is more likely to escalate when it involves personal relationship issues, aggressive and/or passive-aggressive behaviors, and non-family executives as messengers or yes-men due to potential communication bias and/or misleading information.

Abstract:
This study investigated the association between the severity of Tourette Syndrome (TS) and comorbid tendencies (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and rage), maternal differential treatment, fairness evaluation of maternal differential treatment, and communication with both sibling and family relationships. Fifty-five mothers and healthy siblings of individuals with Tourette Syndrome participated in the study. The parents provided information regarding family demographics and the severity of Tourette Syndrome and comorbid tendencies, and the healthy siblings completed the sibling and family relationship questionnaires. The questionnaires were posted on a secure website, where the parents and healthy siblings could complete the online measures via internet connections.

The study revealed several important findings. The results showed significant associations between the severity of Tourette Syndrome and comorbid OCD, ADHD and rage tendencies thus suggesting that studying Tourette Syndrome without considering comorbidity would be unrealistic. Additionally, communication regarding Tourette Syndrome between the healthy siblings and their parents played an important role with respect to sibling and family relationships. Communication between the healthy siblings and their parents predicted more warmth between the healthy siblings and their sibling with Tourette Syndrome as well as more family cohesion and adaptability as reported by the healthy siblings. Communication had a significant moderating effect on both severity of Tourette Syndrome and healthy siblings' fairness evaluation of maternal differential treatment in predicting family relationships. When the sibling had less severe Tourette Syndrome, the healthy siblings reported more family adaptability when they had more communication with their parents, and reported less family adaptability when they had less communication with their parents. The results also indicated that when healthy siblings perceived their maternal differential treatment to be unfair, they reported more family cohesion when they had more communication with their parents, and reported less family cohesion when they had less communication with their parents. The study did not support the negative impact of maternal differential treatment on sibling relationships; however, the results confirmed the previous findings regarding the moderating effect of fairness evaluation on maternal differential treatment in predicting sibling relationships. When the sibling with Tourette Syndrome was favored, the healthy siblings reported more sibling warmth when they perceived the favouritism (maternal differential treatment) to be fair. Furthermore, the results showed that healthy siblings' perceptions of maternal differential treatment could predict cohesion and adaptability in the family. The more the healthy siblings reported being treated differently by their mothers, the less cohesion and adaptability they reported in their families.

The present study supported previous studies in finding that sibling conflict decreased with age. The results also highlighted the role of age in moderating the effects of communication and maternal differential treatment in predicting sibling conflict. When healthy siblings had more communication with their parents they reported more conflict with their sibling with Tourette Syndrome when they were younger, and reported less sibling conflict with their sibling with Tourette Syndrome when they were older. Furthermore, when healthy siblings were favored by their mothers, they reported more conflict with their sibling with Tourette Syndrome when they were younger than when they were older, thereby emphasizing the importance of developmental differences in dynamics between the siblings. The significant contributions of the study include underlining the importance of communication, the relationship between Tourette Syndrome and comorbid conditions, and healthy siblings' perceptions of sibling and family relationships.

This paper builds on the study Prices on the Second-hand Market for Swedish Family Housesconducted by Lennart Berg, economist and associate professor emeritus from UppsalaUniversity in 2002. This study attempts to identify inter-and intraregional pricedependencies in Sweden for the second hand market for family houses. The house priceindices used in this econometric analysis commences in 1990:1 and ends in 2018:4 for allregions in accordance to NUTS 2 in Sweden. This thesis models the change of the regional prices for one-and two family houses indicatingthat the metropolitan area of Stockholm contributes predominantly to all other regionsthroughout the country. In addition, the capital city also shows cointegrated relationshipswith all regions although not the contrary. Shocks to the housing market of Stockholmindicate that Gothenburg, the Western region and Malmö are affected contemporaneouslyfollowed by the other regions nationwide with a certain time lag leading to say that thecontribution and influence of the capital city´s house price development leads the pricedevelopment throughout the country, Sweden.

Although researchers suggest that interactions between the student and others in the home environment facilitate smooth readjustment, little is known about how the family relates during this transition period. In this study, the interactional dynamics within the family during the student's readjustment were explored. Theoretical concepts from systems theory and family developmental theory were used to further understanding of the interactional processes within the family system. A multiple single-case study research design was employed, where eight families were interviewed at three points in time: one month before the student's return; one month after the student's return: and at four to five months after return. All family members were interviewed at each stage, using a semi-structured interview guide designed to gather data about family relationships during this period. Changes in family dynamics between siblings, the returnee student, and parents, were a significant finding of this study, although these changes varied across families. A family perspective of the readjustment process was collated from descriptive accounts from family members, where four phases of the family experience could generally be described: excitement, uncertainty, rediscovery and reorganisation of the family system. It was concluded that the study showed evidence that the readjustment process was influenced by the interactions and interrelationships within the family, where not only the student had changed but also the family.

The efficient operation and succession of family owned businesses plays a critical role in our national economic health. This study was built upon the Family Business Succession Model, which is based on family systems theory. The impact of owner characteristics, enterprise characteristics, business formalizing activities, family influence, access to resources, and external environmental conditions, all on the extensiveness of family business succession preparedness, was assessed. These results were moderated by the generation of the business. With an exploratory and descriptive methodology, primary survey data were obtained from family business owners in Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas. Research results provide family business advisors with important insight for developing recommendations around improving the extensiveness of family business succession preparedness, provide important policy implications, and serve as a basis for additional theory development in family business succession planning.
