Likhi, Leburu Leburu. "Congregational abuse towards clergy families : a pastoral care challenge." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/67767.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to help clergy families who have been hurt and been abused by congregation in their circuits. This is a sporadic in many churches, particularly in mainline churches. The study is dealing with clergy, minister and their families who have been attacked in the church chapel even in the manse. Most circuits when a clergy is sent to their circuits to sever, congregation thinks they own the church, they own the manse, they think they can do whatever they want, and abuse the clergy families. This thesis will try to show kinds of leaders the church is having. It will also show how congregation are cruel and easing influence. What makes things worse is that the church faced with church discipline, most of the time clergies are many even today, there are clergies who are in the waiting list waiting for disciplinary hearings as they have been charged, and congregations lay their charges. Since the researcher has been is the church for guide sometime, his experience let him to make a thorough study. It will also try to introduce and make the top leaders to deal with this kind of issue thoroughly. That is why most children of clergy families when growing up they are also wounded emotional It is the wish of the researcher to equip church leaders and to help clergy families to deal with the congregational abuse.

Maswana, Nonzolo. "Infedility in Africa clergy families : a pastoral care approach." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/40340.

Full text
Abstract:
Infidelity of clergy has been defined as a culture, by those who believe in polygamous marriage. Women are often controlled by men and very few societies exhibit an equalitarian relationship. One paramount way in which men control women is through sex and sexual power. Infidelity is abuse because the characteristics of the unfaithful are like those of a battered and the symptoms of the victim are like those of the battered. Sitting in on battered women’s group, I heard the same things-women wanting to go back; full of anger and rage, saying they’d rather be beaten than wonder where their partner was sleeping at night. The researcher is ministering among Pondo and Bhaca people who are no strangers to this oppressing practice. Few marriages in these days last beyond few years, because infidelity has become such an accepted alternative way of living and working out marital problems. The problem disturbed author’s ministry as a junior minister. As result I am researching this problem so as to come out with a theory that will help to address this issue. Clergy spouses approach the act of infidelity very painful, they ended up traumatizing their own spouses, children and their ministry. One of my favourite clergy in Pondo even resigned his pastorate about a year ago due to adultery and fathering a child outside of his marriage. All of these high profile ministers have been involved in some form of infidelity. But still the powerful words from Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:13 “no temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man, but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it”. Today, many churches invite unfaithful itinerant clergies to preach to their congregations unaware of the spiritual poison they are injecting directly into the life blood of their congregations and the Christian community. No wonder many churches are so full of infidelity, dishonesty and immorality of the worst kind. Clergy spouses decided to stay in their marriage are taught forgiveness, so that they can move away from their traumatic experience.

Peega, Kgakalane Andries. "Caring for traumatized families of 'crucified' clergy : a challenge to pastorial care." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/27556.

Full text
Abstract:
The research deals with trauma and violence as these affect women and children in the parsonage household when the clergy experience brutal attacks by parishioners. It focuses on the clergy households of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa especially within the black congregations. So, the hypothesis to this research is that the clergy, within the Methodist Church Of Southern Africa, are ‘crucified’, but no one cares for their families during these ‘crucifixions’- their well- being, feelings, anxiety and safety and security. No one listens to their stories. No one journeys with them. The only thing the church does, is to transfer the affected minister to another circuit wounded and unhealed. The question dealt with in this research is, where do the clergy go when they go through crisis situations? Do they really need pastoral care? Who cares for their families when they the clergy are the direct victims of violence or emotional attacks? Where do they find healing and counseling? For, it is the children and spouse of the clergy that are adversely affected when the clergy go through crisis, because, when one member of the family suffers, the whole body is affected. The research therefore investigates how the church, especially the MCSA has pastorally responded to the impact these ‘crucifixions’ have had on the emotions of the family members of the clergy; the extent and nature of the traumatic experiences of ministers’ families; the difficulties and problems faced by the church to address these problems and finally, make some personal recommendations to the church to effectively deal with these problems. The research concludes by suggesting a model of pastoral care that will help the church to deal with traumatic experiences of its clergy, for the obligation of the church to concern itself with suffering stems from the Bible where prophets and Jesus teach about love. This therefore, is a demonstration that it is imperative for the church to involve itself through pastoral guidance in dealing with such conflicts and its effects in the lives of ministers’ families. Abstract:
In the continuity of my works executed before, the project will be to reconstruct the best possible the history of high priests of Egypt during the End of the New Kingdom, main characters of local power. This goal will require a gathering and a thorough analysis of archaeologic documents this high personages have left : steles, low-relief, statues, funerary monuments... This first work will allow foremost to achieve a chronology and to understand the genealogy of involved families, then relationship between its. Then, I will have to study caracteristics of their functions to better understand their significance. This first two phases of the development will constitute the introduction to an historical essay, which will try to site each character in relation with Pharaoh and also with others characters of the same time. In this way, we will be certainly able to understand their role and impact on the history of Egypt of the end of the New Kingdom, just before the Third Intermediary Period

Gugushe, Joseph Mongezi. "Traumatic suicide attempt due to lack of remuneration to clergy by the church : a pastoral care perspective." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/40365.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this study was on traumatic suicide attempt due to lack of remuneration to the clergy by the church: a pastoral care perspective. The assumption was that no one in the church took responsibility of caring for clergy families. Trauma referred to a spiritual wound in the soul of humankind and it is a spiritual event when humankind was experiencing loss of faith, loss of hope, loss of trust, loss of meaning, loss of innocence and when the spiritual wound was being healed spiritually. Suicide was defined as purely personal act that appeared to be entirely the outcome of the extreme personal unhappiness of the minister who as a result of non-payment of their stipend by the church. The operational framework of research methodology included: the research design, literature review and interviews; data collection method and data analysis and interpretation. The Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa belongs to the Reformed family of the Protestant churches. In this project, semi-structured scheduled interview open-ended Questions were designed to allow interviewers free movement. The concluding chapter dealt with research findings and recommendations to the church.

Abstract:
Research on the ordination of women has focused on the effect in the church and on aspects of the personality of the women choosing the priesthood but not on effects on the families of ordained women. Using personal interviews, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale and the Bem Sex Role Inventory, spouses in 12 families which contain ordained women from Episcopalian, Methodist, Unity and The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints churches were analyzed to determine the effects of ordination on the families. Couples containing an ordained female were found to have slightly higher marital adjustment and significantly higher levels of androgyny than a standardized sample. Androgyny and marital adjustment were significantly correlated. The more androgenous, the greater the marital adjustment.

Riley, Kate E. "The good old way revisited : the Ferrar family of Little Gidding c.1625-1637." University of Western Australia. School of Humanities, 2008. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2008.0026.

Full text
Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] The Ferrars are remembered as exemplars of Anglican piety. The London merchant family quit the city in 1625 and moved to the isolated manor of Little Gidding in Huntingdonshire. There they pursued a life of corporate devotion, supervised by the head of the household, Nicholas Ferrar, until he died in December 1637. To date, the life of the pious deacon Nicholas Ferrar has been the focus of histories of Little Gidding, which are conventionally hagiographical and give little consideration to the experiences of other members of the family, not least the many women in the household. Further, customary representations of the Ferrars have tended to remove them from their seventeenth-century context. Countering the biographical trend that has obscured many details of their communal life, this thesis provides a new, critical reading of the family's years at Little Gidding while Nicholas Ferrar was alive. It examines the Ferrars in terms of their own time, as far as possible using contemporary documents instead of later accounts and confessional mythology. It shows that, while certain aspects of life at Little Gidding were unusual, on the whole the family was less exceptional than traditional histories have implied; certainly the family was not so unified and unworldly as the idealised images have suggested. Moreover, the Ferrars were actively engaged in making those images, for immediate effect and for posterity. The Ferrars' identities, corporate and individual, and their largely textual practices of self-fashioning are central to the study. Other key concerns are the Ferrars' moral and religious ideals and practices, gender in the family, and intra-familial relationships. Evidence for the thesis is drawn from family documents dating from the early years of the seventeenth century to the time of Nicholas Ferrar's death. ... The Little Academy is considered first: in this unique dialogue circle, young women discussed morally edifying historical tales, offering them a textually-mediated experience of the world and working to reinforce conventional gender roles and religious values. The final three chapters pertain to the copious and little-studied family correspondence. A chapter that develops a theory of the functions of the family correspondence network is followed by one studying the affective relationships that the celibate sisters Mary and Anna Collet maintained through their letters with their unmarried uncle and spiritual mentor, Nicholas Ferrar. These chapters consider the identities as single people that all three developed through these relationships, within the maritally-focused framework of the Protestant family. The last chapter also concerns the lives of the unmarried, examining the relationships of single male adults and their roles in the family, focusing on the friendship of Nicholas Ferrar and his cousin Arthur Woodnoth. The thesis closes by reflecting on the fact that returning the Ferrars to their seventeenth-century context reveals their multi-faceted nature, comprising ideals and identities sometimes incongruous with one another, and certainly unaccounted for in the traditional narratives. It thus demonstrates the importance of the overall project of reconceiving the Ferrars? history, which forms an original contribution to the study of the social, cultural and religious history of early seventeenth-century England.

Abstract:
During two centuries, the Central Americans have tried unsuccessfully to break the chain of disunion. These people are still facing with the consequences of those national identities found out by elites retired within themselves. And yet, these men and women, "Elected of the World", have never been so near to unite the central american peoples into one nation than during the federal experience from 1823 to 1837. They were in a position to realize the full integration of indigenas and ladinos in a homogeneous melting pot that could assure a full independence and a larger prospeity. Why did they fall ? The analysis for the period of a prosopographical corpus of some members of high church, the "Elected of God", shows us that some power families, particularly relying on clerical nets, bear the heavy responsability of this tragic ending. Our methodology led us to reconsider the impact of the "second conquest of America" by the Bourbons administration (the gap between the will to reform and the result of it that, instead of making the Church weaker, would at the contrary have led to its greater centralisation and made easier its control by a few families at the time of Independence). By carefully reconsidering the economic wheels which made possible to the Church to operate, we are trying to explain how an ideologically conservative coalition, in a Gramscian meaning, could appear and produce the fatal use of war by provincial elites in order to dictate their point of view

Abstract:
This thesis aims at bringing to light the function of the familial group in the organization of the Egyptian society during the beginning of the XVIIIth dynasty (from Amosis to Amenhotep II) from the study of the familial background of the priesthood. A prior analysis of kinship terminology used during the period provides data allowing the reconstruction of genealogies of priests and priestesses. This lexicographical study shows that terms of kinship are indeed used unequivocally. Then, by crossing genealogical and prosopographical informations, a trend of professional reproduction can be noticed within the priesthood. Replaced in its historic and social context, this phenomenon reveals, as there is no rule of hereditary transmission neither direct appointment by the king, the existence of family strategies for settling in temples. This leads to revise the definition of the egyptian family and to revalue its role in the functionning of society. Indeed, the studied family groups appear to be organised like aristocratic “houses”, gathering numerous members belonging to various ranked groups (blood relatives, relatives by marriage, dependants, close relations…) sharing common interests. These houses, which position and capacity of action are recognized, structure the society and are privileged partners for the newly established central power at the beginning of the XVIIIth dynasty. Outside the main study of social history, a discovery of more general impact has to be to point out, that is the role played by graphic necessities in the composition of hieroglyphic texts

Abstract:

Scheepers, Chiquekita. "The role of the social worker in the interdisciplinary team providing statutory services to children and families in the cape metropole." University of Western Cape, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/7993.

Abstract:
Magister Artium (Social Work) - MA(SW)
The role of statutory social workers is often misperceived by other role players in interdisciplinary teams; but even more so in the law fraternity spectrum. As such, social workers experience many challenges working with attorneys, magistrates and court clerks because they are often undermined by their counterparts in the interdisciplinary team. This places great strain on professional relationships in settings where these professions are required to work collaboratively, such as statutory services with children and families. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand the role of the social worker in the interdisciplinary team providing statutory services to children and families in the Cape Metropole. The theoretical framework selected for this study is conflict theory, because it is suited to explain the often-strenuous relationship between social workers and the rest of the interdisciplinary team in the law fraternity.

Abstract:
This ph. D. Deals with the domination upon the ecclesiastical principalities in the middle rhineland by the imperial knights during the 17th and 18th centuries, and with the links between the institutions, the social specialization and the family organization among this nobility, that is a good example for the elites in the southwest holy empire. Focusing on twenty lineages, the stufy show first how institutional and confessional differenciation leads the group into becoming a real "church's nobility" that monopolizes the cathedral chapter and the episcopal seats through a thorough aristocratic exclusivism and strong kin networks. The matrimonial strategies are then described as closed ones, because of the genealogical proofs resuired from the canons by the chapters, but also as flexible ones, that can follow the political change, the episcopal success and the dynastisation of the lineages. This "tightening of the lineage" is fanally emphasized by considering its demographical aspects, the balance of power in the family and the reinforcement of the inheritance's discipline : numerically reduced, the lineage devotes a growing part of its energy to the ecclesiastical success and the conservation of the patrimony by contractually redefining the role of each of its members. In a wide comparative frame, this study not only emphasizes the importance of kinnetworks for the survival and adaptation of a self-governing nobility in oligarchical princebishoprics and in the southwest holy empire, that remains an original institutional and…

Abstract:

Abstract: The perspective of concubinato (the state of a man and woman living together who did not marry nor in the church or registry office) as a random and instable relationship, is linked with Caio Prado Júnior and historians that based on Caio Prado Junior¿s works to describe the life of the poor man that survived on the edge of the agro exporting economy, and due to that, were morally, degraded. A new generation of scholars, following this thought, showed that these human beings found in these random and temporary relationships the only way to organize themselves in a family. According to these researchers, the concubinato represented the social declassification in which these people lived. The aim of this thesis is to show that the concubinato was a stable relationship similar to marriage. The analysis of varied documentation ¿ parochial: parish church visits, marriage informal documentation; and judicial documentation: legitimating processes; registry offices documentation post-morten inventories, testaments ¿ made it closer in various aspects the concubinato from legitimate marriage. From analyzing the parochial documentation, the weight of the poverty and ecclesiastical bureaucracy, supposedly elements originating the concubinate were relative. The study of marriage¿s informal documentation revealed how much the cultural values involving the matrimony were internalized by the partners together in a concubinato state. The analyses of the matrimonial licenses relativize the idea that the religious obstacles were easy to be overcome. We focused on the registry and judicial documentation between legitimate parents and children, regarding the heritage. The laws referring to the patrimonial succession together with the process originating from Tribunal of Paço constituted important elements in our work. Through names linking and from crossing sources, we built small biographies of couples that had kids in the concubinato. The cycle of life of these couples was analyzed in different moments. It was possible to verify testimonials, heritage divisions or the own course of his own partner

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of death on the family of the pastor. The study poses a question of what pastoral care model can be used to help the pastor’s family cope during their period of bereavement. A qualitative methodological design was followed, allowing individual experiences to emerge. Five female participants were interviewed. A qualitative analysis was undertaken in order to explore their grief and coping mechanism during the period of bereavement. The study traces the origin and causes of death, with the emphasis on African and biblical perspectives. The aspect of how people make meaning of death is also explored. The study revealed that death had a different impact according to their different culture. Death leads to grief which can be psychological, emotional, social, or spiritual. Several themes emerged from the study. The themes were used to produce a bereavement model that can be used to provide pastoral care to families during their period of bereavement.
