Abstract:
This study aims to describe the application through the Fairclough Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model on insurance advertising and its effectiveness in argumentative writing learning. The research method is a mixing qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative methods are applied by using the Fairclough's CDA model that applies micro, meso, and macro dimensions. Quantitative methods are used to measure the effectiveness of Fairclough CDA modelon argumentative writing learning. The results showed the use of language, connectivity, and hegemony with future concerns caused by lifestyle and social demands, and calamity with phrases as a form of the claim that needs to be made a counterclaim. This strongly supports the argumentation content. The Mann Whitney U test shows significance value of 0,000 is ≤0.005. Thus, it can be concluded that Fairclough CDA modelapplication of learning with CDA is effective for improving learning outcomes in argumentative writing.

Abstract:
This article describes Fairclough’s normative critical discourse on physical insults to children with Lesti Kejora using Norman theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method, listening method and literature study. The observation method was also applied in this study. This study also uses a note-taking approach. The survey consists of three phases: a data acquisition phase, a classification phase, and a data analysis phase. This study uses two news media, Suara.com and Herstory, based on the analysis of Fairclough's theory, bullying the child of artist Lesti Kejora. The data analysis technique used is reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The purpose of the study was to find out how the two SH media (Suara.com and Herstory.ac.id) obtained information about the physical insults of Lesti Kejora's children. The theory used in this study is a three-dimensional model from Norman Fairclough, namely the micro, mesostructural, and macrostructural dimensions. Microstructural analysis that describes the negative and positive sides of physical abuse of children with Lesti Kejora, mesostructurally how the media obtains information related to physical abuse of children. Social situations depicting children's physical appearance as monkeys are associated with children's physical humiliation.

Abstract:
The character's life is always interesting to broadcast and of course, many people are interested and constructed to produce interesting news and broadcast on the media, including online media. The research method for analyzing the construction of celebrity news is a method of discourse analysis from Fairclough. This Fairclough discourse analysis is used to see more broadly the other side of the news so that there is no perception from one party only. Through critical discourse analysis, it is possible to find findings of the ideology of a variety of media available. The results of the study show that based on Fairclough's discourse analysis, there are differences in the content of news coverage in 2 online media. The present research intends to explain the constitution of the Structuralist aspects of the discursive approach of Norman Fairclough, one of the most representative authors of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). As a methodological and theoretical approach, whose purpose consists in the study of the language in contemporary societies, Critical Discourse Analysis is derived from Critical Linguistics of 1970, consolidating itself in the decade of 1990s. As it borrowed the Social Theory of Discourse (TSD), developed by Norman Fairclough, CDA has defined itself theoretically and methodologically, and this explains the relevance of the British linguist to CDA. To elaborate the TSD, Fairclough resorted to important authors of the sciences of language like Halliday, Bakhtin and Foucault, and of social sciences like Bourdieu, Giddens, Thompson, Gramsci and others. We approached the four first ones in this work, and the choice of these authors is due to our interest in the Structuralist aspects of the research of Fairclough. When we refer to structuralist bias , we raise up a great number of problematics about Structuralism, which have existed since the moment the Structuralism came to be seen with certain aversion for many language theorists. One of the reasons is the fact that structuralist approaches give priority to the social structures, not admitting the capacity of action and change of the social subject, this criticism is present in Norman Fairclough s books. Another problematic is a kind of self saturation that the proper structuralism allows to be shown. But to explain this, it is necessary to use the division that Umberto Echo (2001) makes between ontological Structuralism and methodological Structuralism. The first one consists, basically, in the incessant search of deeper structures that lead the phenomena, and the second one consists in the application of homogeneous structural models in the analysis of different phenomena. Eco criticizes the first one, showing the impossibility of reassuring, in fact, the real existence of structures, but he presents the second one as a productive methodology for many kinds of researches. In Fairclough s approach, we find the two modalities of structuralism displayed by Eco. During the research we demonstrate how important Bakhtin, Foucault, Bourdieu and Halliday, had been for the constitution of the structuralist bias of Norman Fairclough, allowing the British author to operate with systems of differences in the treatment of discursive phenomena, without neglecting the dialogic bias in the study of the interaction contexts. At last, the bakhtinian dialogism, foucaultian archaeology, the constructivist structuralist sociology of Bourdieu and the functionalist linguistic of Halliday had more been excellent supports for the constitution of the structuralist bias of Norman Fairclough s discursive approach.
A presente pesquisa de tem por objetivo expor como se apresenta o viés estruturalista da abordagem discursiva de Norman Fairclough, um dos maiores expoentes da Análise de Discurso Crítica (ADC). Tida como uma abordagem teórico metodológica, cuja finalidade consiste no estudo da linguagem nas sociedades contemporâneas, a Análise de Discurso Crítica é uma vertente dos estudos do discurso derivada da Linguística Crítica de 1970, consolidando-se a partir da década de 90. Ao se apropriar da Teoria Social do Discurso (TSD) desenvolvida por Norman Fairclough, a ADC se define tanto teórico quanto metodologicamente, o que explica a relevância do linguista britânico para essa corrente de análise discursiva. Para elaborar a TSD, Fairclough recorreu a importantes autores das ciências sociais e da linguagem como Halliday, Bakhtin, Foucault, Bourdieu, Giddens, Thompson, Gramsci, entre outros. Os quatro primeiros foram abordados neste trabalho, e a escolha destes se deu justamente pelo interesse no viés estruturalista da obra de Fairclough. Quando nos referimos a viés estruturalista , terminamos por trazer à tona toda uma problemática que existe desde o momento em que o Estruturalismo passou a ser visto com certa aversão por muitos teóricos da linguagem. E uma das justificativas diz respeito ao fato de abordagens estruturalistas darem primazia às estruturas sociais, não admitindo a capacidade de ação e mudança dos sujeitos sociais, essa é uma crítica presente na obra de Norman Fairclough. Outra problemática estruturalista relevante é uma espécie de auto saturação que o próprio estruturalismo deixou surgir. Mas para explicar tal saturação, convém recorrermos a divisão que Umberto Eco (2001) faz entre estruturalismo ontológico e estruturalismo metodológico. O primeiro consiste, basicamente, na procura incessante de estruturas cada vez mais profundas que regem os fenômenos, e o segundo consiste na aplicação de modelos estruturais homogêneos na análise de diferentes fenômenos. Eco critica o primeiro alegando a impossibilidade de se assegurar, de fato, a existência real de estruturas, mas apresenta o segundo como metodologia produtiva para diversas pesquisas. Em Fairclough encontramos os dois estruturalismo expostos por Eco. Durante a pesquisa, procuramos demonstrar como Bakhtin, Foucault, Bourdieu e Halliday foram fundamentais para a constituição do viés estruturalista de Norman Fairclough, permitindo que o autor britânico operasse com sistemas de diferenças no tratamento de fenômenos discursivos, sem que ele abandonasse os aspectos dialógicos no estudo dos contextos de interação. Enfim, o dialogismo bakhtiniana, a arqueologia foucaultiana, mais a sociologia estruturalista construtivista de Bourdieu e a Linguística Sistêmico Funcional foram suportes relevantes para a constituição do viés estruturalista da abordagem discursiva de Norman Fairclough.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the discourses that can be identified in medias representation of social services. To answer the purpose we made a critical discourse analysis using Faircloughs three-dimensional model. The choice to focus our study on a local newspaper was based on earlier research that found it possible that a local paper has a greater impact on readers than a national newspaper. Readers can more easily connect with what's happening in the immediate environment than what is written nationally. We used articles published in 2013 containing “social services”. We found four discourses about collaboration, economy, criticism and work practices and procedures. We found social services mentioned in contexts involving money, resources, complaints, cooperation, collaboration, support, routines and responsibilities. The social services was briefly depicted, descriptions of their work was often omitted. The descriptions we found was often negative and contained assumptions that were not explained.
Syftet med detta examensarbete var att undersöka vilka diskurser som kan identifieras i medias framställning av socialtjänsten. För att besvara syftet gjorde vi en kritisk diskursanalys med Faircloughs tredimensionella modell. Vi valde att fokusera vår studie på en lokaltidning då tidigare forskning funnit att det kan ses som möjligt att en lokaltidning har ett större inflytande på läsarna än en rikstäckande tidning då läsarna lättare kan knyta an till det som händer i närmiljön än det som skrivs nationellt. Vi använde oss av artiklar publicerade under 2013 och som innehöll ordet socialtjänst. Studien resulterade i fyra diskurser; samverkansdiskursen, ekonomidiskursen, kritikdiskursen och diskursen om arbetssätt och rutiner. Vi fann att socialtjänsten nämns i sammanhang som berör pengar, resurser, klagomål, samarbete, samverkan, stöd, rutiner och ansvar. Sättet socialtjänsten benämndes på var kortfattat, beskrivningar av deras arbete utelämnades ofta. De beskrivningar vi fann var ofta negativa och innehöll antaganden som inte förklarades.

Syftet med den här studien är att undersöka och analysera vilka diskurser om inkludering som blir synliga i skolledares tal om begreppet. Från en socialkonstruktionistisk utgångspunkt användes Faircloughs kritiska diskursanalys på en text bestående av fyra transkriberade intervjuer med skolledare. Sammanfattningsvis har studien sett sex diskurser om inkludering framträda. Dessa var en gemenskapsdiskurs, en diagnostisk diskurs, en dialogisk diskurs, en expertisinriktad diskurs, en individualiseringsdiskurs och en förmågediskurs. Inkluderingen beskrevs på skiftande sätt, vilket stämmer väl överens med skiftande definitioner även inom forskningen. De diskurser inom vilka språkanvändandet minst stämmer överens med forskning om inkludering var den diagnostiska diskursen och förmågediskursen, där det lätt blir att barnet sätts som bärare av problemet.
The object of this study is to examine and analyze which discourses concerning inclusion become apparent when school administrators speak of the concept. Fairclough critical discourse analysis was used, from a social constructionist premise on four transcribed interviews with school administrators. In conclusion, six discourses became apparent about inclusion. These included a community discourse, a diagnostic discourse, a dialogical discourse, an expertise oriented discourse, an individualization discourse and an ability discourse. Inclusion was described in varying ways, which corresponds well with current research. The discourses where language use least corresponded with research about inclusion was the diagnostic discourse and the ability discourse, wherein the child is easily portrayed as the carrier of the problem.

The purpose of this paper was to examine how the bullying discourse differs depending on if the person bullying is a student or an employee at the school. Cases from Skolinspektionen and Barn- och elevombudsmannen was analysed using Faircloughs three dimensional critical discourse analysis to be able to identify how the disocurse differs depending on who has been bullying. The analysis showed that the discourse do differ between when it is a student and when it is a employee at the school that bullies. The agency of the employees were hidden and their potentielly bully-like actions were rationalized while the agency of students that bully was clear.
Uppsatsen syfte var att undersöka hur mobbningsdiskursen skiljde sig åt beroende på om det var en elev eller en anställd på skolan som har utsatt en elev för kränkande behandling. Med hjälp av Faircloughs tredimensionella kritiska diskursanalys har ärenden inkomna till skolinspektionen analyserats för att kartlägga eventuella skillnader. Analysen visade att diskursen skiljer sig beroende på vem som var anklagad. Anställdas handlingar bortförklarades och förmildrades i huvudmannens yttranden samtidigt som agentskapet doldes medan elever framställdes som personligt ansvariga för de kränkningar som skett.

Abstract:
Syftet med denna uppsats är att ta reda på hur gymnasieskolors webbtexter kan förstås i förhållande till diskurs. För att undersöka detta utgår jag från Norman Faircloughs kritiska diskursanalys och den systemisk-funktionella grammatiken (SFG). Jag undersöker fyra webbtexter som beskriver fyra olika gymnasieskolor – två privata och två kommunala skolor. Uppsatsens ansats är språkvetenskaplig. Stor vikt läggs därför vid den systemisk-funktionella grammatiken. Jag utgår från den interpersonella analysens språkhandlingar, modusmetaforer och modalitet. Texternas första- och andradeltagare analyseras även separat liksom texternas tilltal. Analysresultaten visar att alla fyra texter bär drag av marknadsföringsdiskurs. Detta realiseras bland annat av direkt du-tilltal och en rad erbjudanden till läsaren. Vissa erbjudanden uttrycks explicit i form av varor. Andra erbjudanden, som kunskap och utveckling, är mer abstrakta. Analysen visar också att texterna bär spår av bland annat elitistisk diskurs. Detta realiseras bland annat genom modalitetsmarkörer, modusmetaforer och placeringen av förstadeltagaren i olika satskomplex. Genom att använda diskurser utanför den traditionella utbildningsdiskursen visar skolornas webbtexter en förändring i samhället. Marknaden har flyttat in verksamheter som tidigare tillhört den offentliga sektorn. Detta skapar en ny relation mellan skolan och eleverna. Genom att element från marknadsföringsdiskursen har lånats in i skolans värld konstrueras eleven till en konsument av utbildning.

Abstract:
In this study, my intention has been to examine how the ambiguous concept of corruption is constructed by the press. Emphasizing the media’s representations of the socially constructed and context-specific concept, this work adopts a critical perspective on discourse, together with an approach of conceptual history. Finland has for many years been appointed as one of the least corrupt countries in the world, signing several international conventions against corruption since the 1990s, which in turn has led to an increase in discussion regarding the phenomenon. By conducting a multi-method study, my aim has been to analyse the possible changes in the definition of ”corruption” in the Finnish newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet during the period 2000-2013. Using the theoretical framework of Fairclough’s media discourse and Koselleck’s conceptual history, the concept has been analysed in light of Finnish legislation regarding corruption during this period. The analysis yielded several results. The concept of corruption is defined as a both moral and legal problem, resulting in shifting meanings. A change in the representation of levels of corruption in Finland, from optimistic to pessimistic is illustrated, which is upheld in the press by results from international corruption surveys and statements made by those in power. Overall, while discourse on corruption is both constructed and transformed by journalists, it has ideological effects when what is presented as facts are in reality based on statements made by experts and political actors.  Finally the analysis shows that “corruption” and “trust”, being asymmetrical concepts, constitute an inseparable pair of concepts. In a democratic country these concepts depend on each other, making corruption a matter of the entire society. I propose that further research examine the possible changes in the concept of corruption over a longer period of time.

Abstract:
This chapter applies a critical theory lens to understanding how South African university students construct meaning about the role of ICTs in their lives. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) has been used as a theoretical and analytical device drawing on theorists Fairclough and Gee to examine the key concepts of meaning, identity, context, and power. The specific concepts that inform this study are Fairclough’s three-level framework that enables the situating of texts within the socio-historical conditions and context that govern their process, and Gee’s notion of D(d)iscourses and conceptualization of grand societal “Big C” Conversations. This approach provides insights into students’ educational and social identities and the position of globalisation and the information society in both facilitating and constraining students’ participation and future opportunities. The research confirms that the majority of students regard ICTs as necessary, important, and valuable to life. However, it reveals that some students perceive themselves as not being able to participate in the opportunities technology could offer them. In contrast to government rhetoric, ICTs are not the answer but should be viewed as part of the problem. Drawing on Foucault’s understanding of power as a choice under constraint, this methodological approach also enables examination of how students are empowered or disempowered through their Discourses about ICTs.

Abstract:
Asian/American educators are often reified as the model minority and are regarded as smart, quiet, and reserved, and willing to conform to the dominant discourse and culture (Fairclough, 2001; Ramanathan, 2006). When they do not mold to this ascribed role, they can be avoided, found peculiar, and isolated (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001). This chapter examines the narratives of three Asian/American teachers in the Midwestern United States. These narratives are instructive in individual and collective racial identity development, as well as the cultural formation of emerging definitions of what it means to be an Asian/American professional in U.S. public schools.
