Abstract:
This article deals with the activities within the Association GCI during the first half of the 20th century. The association was formed in 1902 by female graduates of the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics (GCI) to promote their interests. The study is primarily based on the association’s yearbooks and daily newspapers. The study’s three main research questions are: Why was the Association GCI formed? Who was behind the formation? What results did the association achieve or not? The association’s most important contribution during the period was its courses for gymnastics directors, which were characterized by both curiosity and boldness. The conservatism regarding physical culture that is otherwise often associated with GCI was not present here. Nevertheless, in the long run, the association did not succeed in strengthening the members’ professional positions. In conflicts with the medical profession and the Gymnastics Teachers Association, the Association GCI drew the shortest straw.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the attitudes towards the labour movement’s strategies, goals and organisational issues in Swedish Miners’ Union’s (Gruvindustriarbetareförbundet, hereafter Gruv) paper, Gruvarbetaren 1917-1925.

The theoretical starting point is Engels’ view on the class state. This perspective turns the question of socialism and the way to get there into an issue of working class power over the state. Another theoretical perspective is the partition of the labour movement into a trade-unionistic branch, seeing unions as financial organisations of interest, and a pro-state one, considering unions as political organisations.

During the period investigated Gruvarbetaren was quite radical and advocated a firm class struggle strategy towards employers. Since these were considered unreliable, class struggle was seen as the only way to better the conditions for the working class. The solution to the workers’ problems was by the paper considered to be socialism. In accordance with Engels’ view the working class would have to attain power over the state in order to reach that goal due to the class oppressive nature of the capitalist state. This power should preferably be conquered by way of revolution where the capitalist state was remodelled into a socialist one rather than through reforms. In this process the trade unions should take an active, political, part according to the paper and thus it can be placed in the pro-state branch of the labour movement. Especially during the years around 1920 it was clear that Gruvarbetaren wanted unions to develop into revolutionary organisations.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to study the labour union Försvarsverkens Civila Personals Förbund section 36 in Karlskrona between 1939- 1949, which consisted of men and women who were employees of the naval shipyard. The labour union is studied by investigating their economy, membership number and amount of written rapports to and from the section and which labour questions they worked for. Besides this, the essay seeks to study if there was any development in the working process, for example if there occurred any modernization in the shipyard and if this is visible in the questions driven by the union. Another purpose of this paper is to compare section 36 in Karlskrona with section 41 in Malmö, by comparing which questions they worked for and the working process in the shipyards. The theory used in this paper is the so called conflict- theory, which states that conflict is either moving society forward, or creating chaos in the natural order, by the struggle for material resources. Conflict theory is a multi- faceted theory and therefore one interpretation, made by Bo Stråth, is used for this paper. When it comes to the method used in this paper, the one that is used is a comparative method with both quantitative and qualitative elements. The other aspect of the method comes from the conflict theory, as described by Stråth. The result showed that section 36 had a relatively good development between 1939- 1949: their economy increased and their membership increased overall, even though most factors changed for better or worse between each year. Another result was that section 36 and section 41 were quite alike when it came to the two aspects that were investigated. In both sections the question of wages was the most important and in both shipyards the working process changed to some extent for the employees, which can be seen in the questions driven by both sections.
