Dearden, Jackie. "Introducing facilitated communication training : an action research project." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2005. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11136/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Facilitated Communication Training (FCT) is a controversial approach to supporting people with severe communication difficulties. It is one method of supporting Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). It has the potential for enabling people with severe language impairments to access communication aids. The local education authority had experience of enabling a non-verbal young person with cerebral palsy who uses FCT to access mainstream education and were open to exploring whether other young people could benefit from this support. Aims: To explore ways of introducing FCT within the local authority in order to enhance the communication of young people who had been identified as not having had access to the means of reaching their communication potential. Method: An action research approach resulted in the implementation of a pilot project. AAC/FCT was introduced to a group of seven pupils and the adults who support them through a training and support programme. A case study methodology was used to analyse the outcomes for pupils and adults. Results: Action research was found to support the introduction of FCT. Some pupils showed significant gains through access to AAC/FCT. The majority of adults reported changes in their knowledge, use and attitudes towards AAC/FCT. Many attributed this to an increased belief in pupils' potential. Conclusions: Action research is an effective process in supporting change. There is a theoretical basis for explaining why FCT supports some pupils. The discourse used to describe FCT could be further supported by using theories that take account of context (mediated learning and activity theory) and could contribute to changing the negative historical and socio-cultural discourse associated with FCT. An effective training and ongoing support programme lead to changes in adults' practise.

Desmond, Catherine Sarah. "Generalisation of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) across transfer facilitated and non-facilitated settings." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9286.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which PECS would generalise from the training setting to other familiar settings as a function of properties of the settings. It was predicted that PECS would generalise better to the setting where PECS use facilitated was by having the same communicative partners and items available. Three preschool children all with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) were trained to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to a minimum proficiency level of Phase 3. The experiment employed an ABA single case design with multiple target measures, replicated across participants, acknowledging that observations in the first baseline would be zero. Transfer of PECS across settings varied for each participant. One participant generalised PECS to the facilitated environment more than the non-facilitated environment as predicted. Another participant transferred PECS better to the non-facilitated environment compared to the facilitated environment contrary to the research prediction. The final participant did not generalise PECS to either environment, switching to functional verbal communication instead.

Joslyn, Noella, and n/a. "Facilitated communication and people with brain injury: three case studies." University of Canberra. Professional & Community Education, 1997. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060427.093347.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines facilitated communication as it was experienced by three people who were affected by acquired brain injury. Facilitated communication is a type of augmentative communication purported to allow persons with a severe communication impairments to communicate. The assumption is made that people with global apraxia can communicate if given physical support. The technique usually involves a facilitator providing physical support to the arm, hand or elbow of the person with the severe communication impairment to assist them to point to objects, pictures, printed letters and words or to a keyboard. Facilitated communication is a controversial method because it is difficult to establish the existence, or extent of the facilitator's influence in the communication of the person with a disability. Although much of the research on facilitated communication has been conducted with people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, research on the use of the technique with people with brain injury offers several advantages. Firstly, most people with brain injury were known to be competent communicators prior to the brain injury. Secondly, many recover sufficiently to allow a retrospective examination of the issues that faced them when they were using the technique. Thirdly, there can be a large amount of data available about the person's diagnosis, their prognosis and the course of their history following the event. Consequently, the current study uses a case study methodology to explore the application of facilitated communication with people with brain injury and draws on personal recollections of people with brain injury, interviews with families and medical and therapist reports. The three people interviewed in the study displayed varying language and memory abilities. They indicated a preference for independent communication techniques and they reported frustrations with using facilitated communication. They quickly rejected the method when speech began to appear even though their speech was inadequate for communication purposes, for two of them, for an extended period. One of the interviewees reported that facilitator influence was overwhelming at times but not always present. Two of the interviewees felt that facilitated communication gave them a start in their recovery process. Two of the interviewees reported that meaningful exchanges with others occurred only with speech. In addition to these findings the study, although not experimental, was able to shed light on some of the contentious issues surrounding facilitated communication. The method is reported to be designed to overcome the motor difficulties of the disabled communicator by providing physical assistance to individuals with poor fine motor control thus breaking the perseveration cycle that can be present . However the task of coping with facilitator influence may actually require some motor skills. Also, the physical effort involved in using facilitated communication for some individuals may have been underestimated by its supporters. However the study has shown that some individuals with severe communication impairments felt that facilitated communication had some merit but saw their ability to communicate independently as the significant achievement in their recovery.

Abstract:
An augmentative and alternative communication method, Facilitated Communication (FC), raises serious questions regarding origin and therefore credibility of the texts produced by persons having autism. This controversy is partly due to confusion between two methods of facilitation: Facilitated Communication and Psychophany (a method derived from FC and mostly used in France). The present exploratory study aims at identifying origin of the messages produced via FC and Psychophany, and at differentiating these two methods. We first analyze systematically clinical video observations of 6 young non-verbal adults with autism, while practicing FC during regular sessions with their facilitators, and while modulating the psychomotor support of the subjects. Fine video analyses from 2 subjects show 39 clear clinical correlations between behaviors and texts are extracted from 7 sessions in one adult (Brice) and 20 correlations from 4 sessions in another adult Amar. Besides, when comparing two subjects, Brice and Carine, who are facilitated by the same facilitator, we show that the number of sentences produced do not differ significantly, whereas the total time of writing differs significantly. In the second study, Brice and his facilitator are studied more deeply through various tests, reading tests, message passing procedure and psychophysical tests using an accelerometer. Results seem to confirm our first ones showing a contribution of the subject, Brice, to the writing process. Our study confirms necessity distinguishing FC, during which the subjects partly control the writing process at visuo-motor levels, from Psychophany where the subjects apparently do not control anything

Abstract:
Abstract. The traditional autonomous vehicle (AV) architecture places a heavy burden on graphics processing units of the vehicle due to heavy signal processing requirements. Ultimately this results in performance degradation in AVs. This is mainly due to advanced sensors, which enable the vision for AVs, like Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), radars and cameras. In most of the AV models accepted by many leading automobile companies, LiDAR plays a significant role. It generates a high definition (HD) point cloud of the surroundings to obtain a precise map. AV makes decisions based on that by processing Terabyte (Tb) scale data within the AV. Still, vehicle-mounted LiDARs are not capable of providing information beyond a human driver’s vision. To provide a solution for the above-mentioned drawbacks of the traditional AVs, we propose an infrastructure based communication architecture to facilitate autonomous driving and communications. A set of coordinated LiDAR modules with integrated transceivers, which are mounted at an elevation with a bird’s eye view, can provide a much larger field of vision (FoV). Decisions are taken from a centralized body. We prove the technical feasibility of the system from sensing and communication point of view. The proposed architecture can play a supportive role with traditional AV architectures and it can be applied to many cases such as to automate harbours and factory floors. In the second part of the thesis, we address a resource allocation problem with ultra-reliable and low latency communication (URLLC) for a factory floor. We have analytically proven the capability of the proposed system to establish a reliable (packet error probability less than 10^(-5)) and low latency (less than 1 ms transmission delay) links with sufficient throughput (kilobit scale) using a convex optimization problem. Latency, throughput and reliability variations are studied under the short packet transmission of the proposed system.

Abstract:
Turning cells into useful devices to perform unnatural functions creates the potential to permit the interface between biological organisms and electronics. In this thesis cell-based devices were designed and constructed to respond to either light or a specific chemical stimulus. Design constraints were defined by the eventual application of the device, a biohybrid robot. The enzyme endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) was chosen as a target for genetic engineering. Prior to constructing the device a suitable host for the engineered construct was selected. CHO-K1 cells were transfected with nitric oxide synthase and expression levels were characterized via flow cytometry and inhibitor studies. A novel method for the effective delivery of inhibitors was developed and applied to demonstrate that transfected eNOS was sufficiently expressed to produce a measurable output. In addition, a balance between the native nitric oxide production machinery of the cells and the transfected endothelial nitric oxide synthase was observed. Two systems were designed and constructed for stimuli responsive nitric oxide production. The first system was designed to produce nitric oxide in response to the presence of the antibiotic rapamycin. Chemical induced dimerization would bring the two separated domains of endothelial nitric oxide synthase into close enough proximity to re-establish protein function. The separate oxygenase and reductase domains were successfully amplified and subsequently fused with components of the chemically induced dimerization system. The second system involved fusing a domain from the plant gene Nhp1 (Light Oxygen Voltage domain - LOV) capable of harvesting a photon, with mouse endothelial nitric oxide synthase. This strategy aimed to hijack the wild type protein’s native electron transfer pathway. Manipulation was carried out in bacteria with subsequent transfection into CHO-K1 cells. Subsequent testing of nitric oxide production the mutant cells confirmed the optical sensitivity of the mutant eNOS. Moreover both LOV mutant cell lines were capable of fast response times and switching behaviour. The findings of this thesis demonstrate that genetic engineering of endothelial nitric oxide synthase is a suitable strategy for the controlled release of nitric oxide upon optical stimulation. Moreover the potential of an engineered cell to respond quickly to stimuli has been realized, comparing favourably to genetically engineered systems that rely on gene expression to elicit an output.

Collins, Gary Wayne. "Information communication technology as a cognitive tool to facilitate higher-order thinking." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24075.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital educational technology is capable of contributing supplementary strategies that can be used to address various educational challenges faced by higher education. Foremost among these challenges is the widespread lack of academic preparedness of students who enter South African higher education institutions. The legacy of Apartheid, teachers' poor domain knowledge and command of the language of instruction, together with a lack of commitment to the cognitive development of learners are some of the reasons why students have not developed the cognitive skills required to engage in meaningful learning. Meaningful learning requires a high level of conceptual engagement and development. To assist in the learning process, educators must focus on student learning rather than on the instructor and the technology used in the instruction. A powerful means of supporting meaningful learning is through a process of model building. Computer technology can effectively be used to facilitate the building of conceptual models. By encouraging students to use computer technology to build models that represent their personal understanding, the students are performing the role of designer and the technology is used as a cognitive tool. Using digital technology as a cognitive tool allows students to engage in critical thinking and higher-order learning. An expert system shell is one way in which technology can be used as a cognitive tool. When students build expert systems they are required to demonstrate the reasoning of an expert and to exhibit an understanding of causal relationships and procedural knowledge. There is very little evidence of research concerning the application of expert systems as a cognitive tool in education. The primary aim of this study is to formulate design principles in the form of conjectures and principles related to a learning environment that uses technology as a cognitive tool in the form of an expert system shell to promote higher-order thinking skills. The second aim of this study is to explore the experiences of students who are exposed to a learning environment based on the conjectures and principles formulated during the design phase of the research. The conjectures and principles formulated during this study are expressed in terms of the characteristics, procedures and arguments associated with a learning environment that uses technology in the form of an expert system shell to facilitate higher-order thinking. These conjectures and principles were separated into seven interrelated clusters that can be summarised as follows:
  • initial exposure;
  • guided discovery learning;
  • designing the expert system on paper;
  • creating domain awareness;
  • linking conceptual understanding to a representation of that understanding;
  • hands-on development; and
  • problem engagement.
These conjectures and principles could guide similar endeavours undertaken by lecturers or instructional designers.

Regehr, Lindsay Jacalyn. "Paraprofessional Counselors' Perceptions of Storybooks to Facilitate Children's Communication Following Parental Suicide." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2018. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7715.

Full text
Abstract:
A parent's death it is one of the most stressful and traumatic events in a child's life (Guldin et al., 2015; Worden, 1996, 2008). In particular, when bereavement is linked to a parent's suicide, children face unique challenges and are more vulnerable to potentially negative outcomes (Brent, Melhem, Donohoe, & Walker, 2009; Haine, Ayers, Sandler, & Wolchik, 2008; Pitman, Osborn, King, & Erlangsen, 2014; Young et al., 2012). Although many factors influence children's recovery following a parent's suicide, the surviving parent's emotional stability and emotional availability to support their children are of critical importance. Additionally, negative outcomes are often linked to unhealthy patterns of grief, such as avoidance and blame (Ratnarajah & Schofield, 2008), social isolation, closed communication (not talking about the suicide), and secrets kept within the family (Cerel, Jordan, & Duberstein, 2008). Furthermore, society's stigmatization of suicide impedes survivors' emotional healing (Mitchell et al., 2006). In recent years, researchers have consistently shown the success of bibliotherapy in helping increase children's and parents' understanding and communication about death. However, this efficacy has not been demonstrated specifically with grief related to suicide. No bibliotherapy-related research specifically addresses children's grief associated with a parent's suicide. Addressing this lack of research, a focus group study was conducted to obtain paraprofessional counselors' opinions about which type of story would be most effective in supporting this unique population of child survivors. We sought participants' (n=5) perceptions regarding which specific criteria should be considered when selecting child-appropriate reading materials (picture books) for bibliotherapy. We focused on the purpose of opening communication with young children (ages 4—8-years old) following their parent's suicide. The following summary and recommendations are based on participants' input. Following a parent's suicide, participants emphasized the critical need to individualize treatment to fit the unique needs of the child. Participants repeatedly stressed the need to know the child-the circumstances surrounding the suicide and the child's specific situation. They also recommended that counselors should strive to find books that fit the child's individual needs; books need to be forthright and honest in their portrayal of suicide; and stories need to show a way forward, provide hope, and assure the child that that they are not alone. Participants endorsed suicide-specific books, indicating that these books tended to be best for helping the child talk about the suicide and their grief. As a foundation for conversation with the child, participants noted the importance of children's books that helped identify and address specific emotions. Additionally, participants cautioned adults to avoid sharing stories that included ambiguous and unresolved issues, as children needed stories that offered closure and directly taught effective coping strategies. Future research is recommended to further explore the efficacy of children's picture books that were endorsed by this study's focus group. It is important to assess child survivors' and surviving parents' perceptions of these stories and the effectiveness of stories in opening communication about the deceased parent's suicide. Additionally, future research needs to investigate licensed counseling professionals' perceptions of children's picture books, specifically their perception of the story's capacity to open communication and provide adaptive grief support to child survivors. Additionally, longitudinal research should focus on the long term effectiveness of sharing carefully selected stories to facilitate healthy grieving patterns in child survivors.

Remote communication has become part of our daily lives. Technology plays a decisive role in filling the gap caused by discrepancies in time and space between us and the people we want to reach. However, the level of immediacy and interactivity are always lacking when compared to face-to-face communication. In most cases, the desire to communicate is postponed or abridged to nonreciprocal sharing, especially when time differences are taken into account. Limited bandwidth also increases the likelihood of a misunderstanding occurring during a remote conversation. Confronting the limitations of remote communication, FlickerThis is a mobile service that facilitates grounding in communication through viewable content. Different from most communication services that rely on isolated channels to push information out, FlickerThis adapts the essential perceptions, seeing and hearing, in face-to-face communication to mediate remote communication. With photos taken by a camera phone and audio narration as the intuitive input, FlickerThis messages are composed to become stories whenever one has an intention to communicate with others. Users can talk over the phone while flipping through a virtual photo album together, or they can record and send voicemails embedded with pictures. Therefore, FlickerThis enables remote communication to switch between synchronous and asynchronous modes, and uses viewable content to enhance mutual understanding.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to understand how informal awareness, the presence and availability information of coworkers, can be provided in remote contexts through technology. Based on a workplace study, it was discovered that informal communication is an important part of work and is inadequately supported by current technology. Through research, it was suggested that information on presence and availability is that which facilitates informal communication. In order to design for this situation, this thesis features six interactive peripheral display prototypes which seek to provide informal awareness in an unobtrusive and effortless way to geographically distributed coworkers. Going beyond monitors, these prototypes seek to utilize natural human sensory-motor capabilities to ease perception and interaction. The results suggest such devices are appropriate at mediating awareness and have the potential to facilitate informal communication.

Abstract:
A phonological disorder is a communication disorder of the speech sound system characterized by an impaired ability to use developmentally expected speech sounds and sound patterns to communicate with others (Bauman-Waengler, 2004). This impairment affects the clarity of a child's speech and how easily a child's speech can be understood. As stated in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) (American Psychiatric Association, 1994), difficulties with speech sound production may interfere with academic achievement, social communication, or future occupational achievement. Children with phonological impairments are generally viewed as being at risk for reading difficulties (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2001).Clinicians and researchers in speech-language pathology agree that efficient treatment of children who have moderate to severe phonological disorders is critical. Although imitation and structured practice are primary strategies employed by speech- language pathologists for practicing speech production, using communicative tasks to facilitate generalization during phonological intervention has been suggested in the literature.The purpose of this study was to determine if communication-centered phonological intervention would be effective in improving speech production in preschool children with moderate to severe phonological disorders. A single subject multiple probe across subjects research design (Horner andamp; Baer, 1978) was used to assess the effectiveness of communication-centered phonological intervention with three preschool children. The communication-centered phonological intervention in this investigation consisted of the combined application of focused stimulation of key words during joint storybook reading and interactive practice of key words using communicative feedback.All three subjects demonstrated some type of phonological improvement following the communication-centered intervention. Two out of the three subjects demonstrated improvement in the use of the target phonological patterns during theintervention sessions with one of these participants demonstrating generalization of the target phonological pattern to conversational speech. Although the third subject did not demonstrate improvement during the intervention period, follow-up testing revealed some system-wide changes in his phonology that may be attributed to the intervention. Further investigation of communication-centered phonological intervention is warranted.

Abstract:
Beginning with birth, typically developing children use strategies to communicate, and the functions of their language change with maturation and interaction. Since communication cannot exist if both parties do not participate, it is important to not only study the ability of the child, but also the behavior of the adult. Numerous studies have examined the behavior of the parent or other domestic adult, but few have included the study of teacher behaviors. This study investigated teachers’ response to four types of nonverbal communication attempts made by infants. The gestures included: deictic, affect signaling, object-related, and conventional. The type of response was also documented as facilitating dialogue or discouraging dialogue. Thirty infant teachers and/or teacher assistants from 11 centers in Northeast Tennessee were videotaped for 30 minutes. Videos were coded to determine which of the defined functions teachers were most likely to respond to and if the response facilitated or discouraged dialogue. The results showed that overall, teachers responded to 25% of nonverbal attempts; 75% of the infants’ nonverbal attempts teacher offered a non-facilitative response or missed the gesture. Pearson correlations determined that there were relationships between children’s attempt to communicate and teachers’ response in all four types of nonverbal communication, including deictic, r (30) = .659, p = .000; affect signaling, r (30) = .917, p = .000; object-related, r (30) =.848, p = .000; and conventional, r (30) = .794, p = .000. There were several relationships between the number of nonverbal attempts by children and teachers offering a facilitative responses including affect signaling, r (30) = .776, p = .000; object-related, r (30) = .635, p = .000; and conventional, r (30) = .514, p = .004, but not with deictic attempts. There were relationships between the number of nonverbal attempts by children and teachers offering discouraging responses in all 4 types of nonverbal language, including deictic, r (30) = .706, p = .000; affect signaling, r (30) = .630, p = .000; object-related, r (30) = .582, p = .001; and conventional, r (30) = .439, p = .015.

Abstract:

In today's society, it has emerged that the development of technology rarely or never accommodates to the significant others’ needs and situation. In order to change significant others’ requirements for the use of technology and web-based services, it is important that their views on technology and web-based services are attended to. The study aim was to describe significant others’ views on technology and web-based services in home care of an elderly next-of-kin with diagnosed dementia. Convenience sampling of nine informants, in relation to certain inclusion criteria, was conducted in collaboration with relative consultants. The method for data collection was qualitative interview by use of an unstructured guide. Data processing was carried out by qualitative analysis. The results show that there are three distinctive areas which highlight significant others’ views on technology and web-based services in home care of an elderly next-of-kin with diagnosed dementia. These areas are: that technology and web-based services will facilitating care, will facilitate communication, and barriers to use technology and web-based services. According to informants, it is important that technology and web-based services will facilitate the care of an elderly next-of-kin, that they are easy to use, providing the security and adapted significant others’ situation based on their suggestions. It is also important that technology and web-based services will facilitate communication in the care of their next-of-kin. The informants believes it is important to communicate with professionals/ network, that they get support and help in using technology and web-based services and communication facilitated by the sound and image combined. Barriers for using technology and web-based services depends according to informants on the absence of need, lack of information and that there is something for others but not for them. It is important that these aspects are taken into account so technology and web-based services will be adjusted based on the audience.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the role of Information and communication technology (ICT) in support of effective knowledge management. Based on a comprehensive literature review, a knowledge management framework was developed for investigating the role of ICT in support of knowledge management. The framework not only centers on the dynamics of knowledge objects and processes, but also focuses on the impact of the internal knowledge management environment where organizational, managerial, structural, cultural and other related elements are intertwined and interplayed. Based on this research framework, two sets of hypotheses were proposed for testing: (a) whether ICT enables and facilitates conversions between knowledge objects and knowledge management processes, and (b) whether the internal knowledge management environment impacts the effective implementation of knowledge management projects. To test the hypotheses, a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies including theoretical induction, continuous literature review, secondary data analysis, and the conduct of an online questionnaire survey and a case study was adopted in this study. The empirical findings were drawn from the secondary data analysis, case study and questionnaire survey. A questionnaire survey and a case study were conducted to obtain empirical data for testing and validating research hypotheses. To obtain a better understanding of current knowledge management best practices, secondary data were gathered and analyzed. In order to investigate the conversion processes of knowledge objects, an online survey was used to explore the experience, perceptions and opinions of respondents in the use of electronic resources at an individual level. To identify the factors that can determine success or failure in implementing knowledge management projects, a case study involving the pilot implementation of a knowledge portal was undertaken for collecting and analyzing empirical evidence from the field. The empirical findings confirm the ICT's enabling role in knowledge management. The results of this study further suggest that the conversion processes between data and information are fully supported by ICT, whereas the conversion processes between data and knowledge, and the conversion processes between information and knowledge are only partially supported by ICT. While knowledge codification and dissemination are increasingly supported by ICT, supportive technology for knowledge generation and application remains much less effective. The critical success factors impacting the implementation of knowledge management projects include organizational, structural, strategical, managerial, and cultural elements. These interlocking elements form the internal knowledge management environment in an organization. This study provides theoretical contributions by better understanding the nature of knowledge, the relationship between ICT and knowledge management, and the relationship between knowledge management and internal knowledge management environment. It also provides a contribution relevant to practitioners by developing a novel knowledge management framework, which can be used as a guideline of knowledge management efforts.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Electrical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2008. Includes bibliographical references (leaves 67-72).
Distributed wireless sensor networks (DWSNs) are applied in a variety of applications that can enhance the quality of human life or even save lives, such as in fire monitoring, where DWSN microsensors relay the exact location of the fire to water sprinkler actors to automatically extinguish the fire. Batteries are currently the predominant source of energy in DWSNs. one of the key obstacles in the adoption of DWSN technology is the limited lifetime of batteries in microsensors. Recharging or replacing depleted batteries can significantly increase costs in DWSNs. The aim of this study is to address the power challenge in DWSNs by proposing a sixteen-element equiangular spiral rectenna to ahrvest ambient microwave energy to supply indoor DWSNs. The study concludes that this rectenna model has the potential to generate power that enables long periods of operation of the DWSNs without human intervention in the power manageement process, thus reducing maintenance and administration costs. The efficiency of the rectenna model was tested in an anechoic chamber. Efficiency test results indicated that the highest efficiency of 2% for the rectenna model was achieved as 2 GHz for an ambient power of -6 dBm across a 1 K ohm load resistence. The study further concludes that the current rectenna model size of sixteen elements is a limiting factor for the deployment of DWSNs.

Gopeni, Amanda. "A feedback loop model to facilitate communication between citizens and local government in a smart city." Thesis, University of Fort Hare, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10353/2205.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, an increasing number of people move into cities to search for better opportunities for themselves and their families. This movement is known as urbanisation and makes it difficult for the local government to fully understand citizens’ needs particularly pertaining to public safety matters. During the first phase of the Public Safety Smart City project, it was identified that there is a need for feedback loop to facilitate effective communication of public safety issues between citizens and local government. This means that EL citizens do not have a better channel in place to address their public safety issues to the local government. This could lead to the decisions made by the local government in public safety not fully communicated back to the citizens. The primary objective of the study is to develop a feedback loop model that will assist in more effective reporting of public safety issues between citizens and the local government. The study followed an interpretivism paradigm and the research methodology employed is the qualitative approach. This was influenced by the existing De Fleur model of communication, secondary data and also semi-structured interviews. The interviews were conducted with eleven citizens and four managers from the Department of Public Safety. It was ascertained that the lack of a feedback loop about public safety issues between citizens and local government is likely to increase public safety issues. Findings revealed that this is because citizens are not continuously updated about their reports and also about the state of public safety matters. Furthermore, the methods of communication utilised lead to poor communication of public safety issues. The study concludes that the introduction of an Information and Communication Technology enabled feedback loop between citizens and local government can help in reducing public safety issues and make public safety officials proactive rather than reactive.

Chen, Bing. "A communication platform to facilitate knowledge transfer between different stakeholder groups in sustainable student accommodation design." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2009. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6131/.

Full text
Abstract:
It is widely acknowledged that sustainability principles should be addressed in the housing market to tackle climate change. In this research, particular attention is paid to latent issues (people's knowledge, motives and values) related to energy saving and carbon reductions in the operational phase of house occupation. In this research, design process is described as a transfer between areas of knowledge bearing on a particular project, aiming for consensus of problem solving. Hence better results can be expected if a close consensus on the alternative options could be achieved between different stakeholder groups. However, stakeholders from different groups often have different systems for value judgement in reality and it is difficult to get the message across in the design decision-making process. To provide a deep insight into the given phenomena, this research explores priority variances between four key stakeholder groups in terms of student accommodation design: designers, clients, occupants and legislators. A multi-strategy research framework is designed for the collection and analysis of data. In this hierarchical context, consultation responses from different stakeholder groups are compared against an agreed set of issues (drawn from EcoHomes). Among these four key stakeholder groups, particular attention is paid to the Occupant Group as its members, student residents (both future housing designers and current housing occupants), are supposed to be better educated on sustainability issues and have a positive effect, through changes in their attitudes, social values and inspirations (willingness to change their lifestyles towards greater environmental sensitivity), over the vast campaigns of education, debate and public participation. It is found that current architectural education frequently overlooks that adapting to climate change could involve carbon-intensive actions - though architectural students have had a general awareness of sustainability principles, it has so far made limited impact on their design protocols or lifestyle choices. Other important findings, such as the interrelationship between education and its effect on student residents' environmental awareness and social desirability, can be fed back into the socio-technical research model (e. g. Bayesian Belief Network model) or used to inform current sustainability-related education. The significant priority variances between different stakeholder groups are also specified. It is concluded that a complete consensus across all stakeholders is unlikely to be achieved in the near future. To achieve better design results, therefore, a communication platform is proposed to facilitate knowledge transfer. Two approaches are addressed to introduce the principle of trans-disciplinary communication: a common language and a broader collaborative decision- making process. Furthermore, by criticising the weighting exercise underpinned BRE's EcoHomes, a Code for Sustainable Student Accommodation (CSSA) is proposed. Rather than achieving a broad consensus, it represents opinions from all levels of decision-makers and acknowledges the priority variances within and between them. As an exploratory case study, the weighting method of CSSA needs to be further verified and developed in the future for legitimate purpose. All research findings are explored and interpreted to the degree of an architect's knowledge level, which reflects the researcher's personal values.

Webster, Penny. "The therapist as a "bad object": the use of countertransference enactment to facilitate communication in therapy." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002592.

Full text
Abstract:
Psychoanalysis as it exists today is not constituted by a single theoretical framework describing pathology and indicating a specific set of interventions. Since Freud originally conceptualised psychoanalytic understanding of pathology and psychoanalysis as a mode of intervention, there have been many revisions and reformulations of his theory. This thesis has attempted to integrate some psychoanalytic ideas regarding personality formation, psychopathology and psychotherapeutic intervention (Fairbairn, 1952; Ogden, 1992, 1994), with interpersonal (strategic / structural) ideas regarding intervention (Minuchin, 1974; Sullivan, 1940, 1953, 1964). In order to do so, the thesis used the relational psychoanalytic perspective, as depicted by Aron (1996) and Mitchell and Aron (1999), as an overarching conceptual framework. The focus from these points of view is the patient's internalized relationship patterns and the therapist's participation in their repetition. It is held that internalized relationship patterns are not only based on, but can be changed by, lived experience. From this perspective, the goal of therapy is to enhance the patient's capacity to reflect and think about experience, and therefore, to communicate about it. This means a change in the patient's predominant mode of communication. Ogden's (1994) modes of communication were described. The thesis suggested that Ogden's modes of communication can be stretched or translated into the types of communication outlined by Langs (1978). This thesis aimed to explore the deliberate use of countertransference responses to facilitate communication in the beginning stages of therapy with patients functioning predominantly in the paranoid-schizoid mode (Ogden, 1992). Patients who operate in this mode are often unable to tolerate interpretation and therefore traditional approaches to intervention are not effective. A "strategic / structural relational psychoanalytic" approach to treatment was proposed. It was suggested that therapists utilize joining and accommodation techniques as described by Minuchin (1974) and alter their style of interaction to match that of the various object relational constellations that they have managed to identify within the patient via their countertransference responses. It was hypothesized that patients need their therapists to be similar to their original objects in order to feel safe in the therapeutic environment and that this may facilitate communication in the beginning stages of therapy. The research utilized a qualitative research approach. Qualitative research methods attempt to use data gathered phenomenologically, always acknowledging the researcher's biases when gathering the data. The data gathered is then interpreted according to various theories or hermeneutic lenses. The hypothesis mentioned above has been investigated by analyzing three cases in terms of the research questions based on Langs' (1978) classification of communication. The thesis described the difficulties inherent in collecting clinical data from psychologists working from within a psychoanalytic framework. Eventually three sets of therapy details and verbatim therapy transcripts were obtained, provided in the thesis and analyzed in terms of the research questions. However evidence for the success of the hypothesized alternate approach was not found in this research study. It was suggested that other possible methods might be useful to investigate the hypothesized approach further.

Abstract:
Older adults are increasingly using social networking sites such as Facebook to maintain social relationships. A growing body of literature indicates that frequent communication with family members and close friends influences successful ageing. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to establish the nature of the relationship between the impact of Facebook communication and successful ageing on older adults living in the rural municipality of Hagfors. This study defines an older adult as a person aged 55 years and above. Self-reported life-satisfaction, social engagement and social trust are used as indicators of successful ageing. Predictions about Facebook communication and successful ageing are tested by theories of socio-emotional selectivity and social capital. This is based on 15 semi-structured interviews conducted with older adults living in the municipality of Hagfors. The results indicate that having small social connections and frequently exchanging privately composed communication with family members and close friends promotes successful ageing. Facebook is found to be a potential source of social capital.

Abstract:
Well into the 21st century strategic decisions remain at the forefront of organisational managerial activity. The ever increasing complexity and uncertainty of the modern world dictates the need for effective strategic decision making. In the attempt to pool together the necessary capabilities strategic decisions in large organisations take place in group settings thus bringing at the forefront the role of group decision making. Group decision making is fundamentally a communicative activity riddled with the intricate processes of negotiation. With negotiation comes conflict with group participants’ differences over perspectives and worldviews being viewed as the fundamental cause of it. Not all conflict is destructive. Benefits are also to be reaped if conflict is managed effectively. A number of techniques and methods have emerged in the field of the Management Sciences and Information Systems that intent to alleviate the destructive and promote the productive aspects of conflict. One technique that follows a rational approach to decision making and incorporates strong elements of facilitation and qualitative modelling has been termed as Facilitated Modelling (FM). The key distinction between FM and other approaches is the use of qualitative models as transitional objects argued to enhance the effectiveness of group conflict management. In the past two decades numerous calls for evaluating the impact FM models may have on conflict have been made with little to no response. This thesis is an exploratory attempt to offer partial insights and inform these calls. The theoretical perspective of Adaptive Structuration Theory acted as the under-bed guiding this exploration. The exploration adopted a multiple case study approach as the methodological avenue for collecting data. Interaction data derived from three workshops, during which strategic decisions were made, have been micro-coded and analysed using both statistical as well as flexible mapping techniques. The results revealed complex relationships between the manner in which the model is appropriated and the resulting conflict management processes. Specifically, findings indicate that when models are appropriated they will reduce the ineffective conflict management behaviours. The concept of Model Appropriations Complexity (MAC) has been introduced as a moderating variable between the model appropriations and conflict management effectiveness with the findings supporting a positive relationship between MAC and effective conflict management. Additional preliminary analyses indicate prior FM-related experience of group participants as another potential explanatory variable for future research to explore.

Avila, Sara Elise. "A Social Communication Intervention to Facilitate Emotion Word Learning in School-Age Children with Developmental Language Disorders." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7367.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, social communication approaches to intervention for children with developmental language disorders (DLD) have been limited. However, several recent studies have shown that these interventions can produce positive changes in children with DLD. One weakness that children with DLD demonstrate is the production of words to express emotion. This thesis evaluates the effectiveness of a story-based social communication intervention to increase the production of emotion words in three elementary school-age children diagnosed with DLD. Data were collected and analyzed in pre-treatment baseline sessions, throughout the intervention, and in post-treatment follow-up data for the seven target emotion word categories of happiness, surprise, fear, anger, sadness, disgust, and contempt. The specific targeted emotion word categories were determined based on individual participants limited proficiency during baseline sessions. Thus, the emotions targeted were unique to each child. Intervention consisted of 40 intervention sessions using a combination of storybook therapeutic strategies (e.g., story enactment, story sharing, and modeling by the clinician to help increase the child's emotion understanding) as well as emotion recognition and emotion inferencing tasks. Each participants data were analyzed and presented in figures. The percentage of non-overlapping data (PND) was used in data analysis, quantifying how successful the intervention was for each of the targeted emotions. While the target emotion word categories varied between participants, all of the children showed improvement in the targeted emotions. While the intervention was more effective for some children than others, all increased in their ability to use the target emotion words more accurately as a result of participating in intervention.

Abstract:

This qualitative essay discusses some of the issues surrounding the lack of knowledge companies have about the importance of meetings as a means for company development. Today, many meetings are carried out without a well defined purpose and aim. As a result of this, the meeting industry is slowly beginning to become aware that companies have a need for professional guidance when drawing up a meeting. Meetings carried out should be stimulating for the company as well as the co-workers.  Companies should come to an awareness of the importance of meetings, and the full capacity of the meeting can be made use of, through using meetings as a means of communication. When companies carry out meetings the focus should be on the quality of the meeting, rather than the cost.  Meetings should be regarded as an investment, comparable to investments in physical capital. We think that this new way to plan and carry out meetings is a new direction within the meeting industry. This direction takes focus on a professionalisation of the content and purpose of the meeting. This development will benefit companies both within and outside the meeting industry. With a professionalisation, companies outside the meeting industry will replace a lot of inefficient meetings with less, but more efficient meetings. The professional meeting should be used as a tool for reaching success, competition benefits and development. The meeting industry will benefit from this process, since more companies would like to turn to experts, which contributes to a new direction with new services generating higher revenue.

Abstract:
One of the most common articulation errors made by children is on the phoneme Ir I. Treatment techniques for this sound have varied and have included the stimulus approach (Van Riper, 1972), phonetic placement techniques (Scripture, 1923), the sensory-motor approach (McDonald, 1964), the motokinesthetics approach (Young & Hawk, 1938), and sequential programming approach (Shriberg, 1975; Wood, 1988), to name a few. An integral part of many of these treatment methods is the use of the auditory stimulation. An innovative technique using a prosthetic device to facilitate the production of Ir I was used by Leonti, Blakeley, and Louis (1975), in the treatment of a 9.8 year old male. A follow-up study was conducted by Clark, Schwarz, and Blakeley, (1993) in which a prosthetic device, the R-appliance, was used to facilitate the production of Ir I at the word level. The results of the study indicated that the appliance facilitated the production of Ir I in isolation, in words, and in spontaneous speech. The present study investigated the use of the R-stick appliance as a facilitative device for the production of the Ir/ phoneme at the word level. It was hypothesized that the experimental group (R-stick) would have higher mean scores at the word level than the control group (no R-stick). This hypothesis was not supported by the data. Both groups showed significant improvements in their Ir I word productions, but no difference was shown between the two treatment approaches. There are several possible reasons for these results: (a) insufficient training with the use of the R-stick and the treatment protocol, (b) lack of probes during the course of the study, (c) length of treatment, (d) the small number of subjects participating in the study, and (e) the R-stick appliance is a clinician-manipulated tool.

This dissertation is a qualitative inquiry that explores and pinpoints those exact communication strategies in leadership communication that enable higher educational leaders in sustaining their positions. This study was initiated with the intent to lay out the foundational literature on the content of communication that is utilized by higher educational leaders on a daily basis to achieve their departmental and institutional goals. For this purpose, communication was the core idea of focus, pertaining to which, verbal and non-verbal skills of leaders were explored. From the notion of communication and upon further investigation of communication literature, theory and leadership studies posit persuasion and trust as two prime components of leadership communication, without which, a leader’s functionality would be greatly mitigated. Therefore, the three main constructs that this study examined are communication, persuasion, and trust. This study was strongly driven by the motive to explore the utilization of those specific communication strategies that enhance persuasion and trust among higher education leaders and their staff and colleagues. The method of inquiry was in-depth, face-to-face interview protocol that enabled the researcher to formulate carefully worded interview protocol questions that were meticulously sequenced and worded to extract the lived communicative experiences of its participants. From this point, thematic coding was utilized to code the responses of the participants and draw out the common themes that emerged across all interviews. The results of this research are comprehensive and contribute to the existing base on communication literature. This research brought forth the pivotal role of relational communication in facilitating leadership, the need for all leaders to make conscious efforts in choosing their verbal and non-verbal communication strategies meticulously in their daily professional lives, and the indispensable role of persuasion and trust in dynamic leadership communication.

Abstract:
Caregivers of children with autism will likely meet with many school professionals once their children become school-aged. These meetings can be intimidating for caregivers who are unfamiliar with special education terminology and protocol, and caregivers may feel ineffective when communicating with school personnel. The purpose of this study is to describe a training curriculum to teach caregivers ways in which to communicate during meetings with school professionals, including the kinds of questions to ask/statements to make and when to ask or make them. A detailed overview of the training procedures, the participants, and the outcomes are described here. Preliminary data suggest the training produced increases in communication skills and that caregivers found the training effective and useful.

Boldt, Barbara A. "Does intervening in the learning of study abroad students facilitate the development of intercultural competencies?" Scholarly Commons, 2008. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/684.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the effects of intervening in the learning of study abroad students via a class called Skills for International Management. It looks specifically at the development of intercultural competencies, and compares two different methods of assessing those outcomes. Thirty-four study abroad students participating in an international management class in Italy were given pre- and post-tests using The Global Competencies Inventory. Qualitative data were gathered using a reflection paper that the students wrote at the end of the semester. The results showed that the qualitative data were better at reflecting what the students learned, while the quantitative results reflected a slight increase in Overall Global Competency for the group. The results confirmed that intervening in the learning of study abroad students during their sojourn positively impacts their overall levels of intercultural competency and they also supported the contention that multiple assessment methods should be used to assess study abroad learning outcomes.
