Bibié-Emerit, Laetitia. Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015BOR30076/document.

Abstract:
This research provides a description of the digital discourse as it appears in the digital environment that is Facebook. It is based on the study of birthday wishes, showing how their final shape may be influenced by technological influence site. The first part provides an overview of developments in research on digital discourse, describing on one hand the context of emergence of Web 2.0 and discursive and epistemological changes that it has caused. And also known linguistic specificities of the speech appearing in digital environments. The second part shows that the advent of the social web has changed things in research on digital discourse, demanding a multidisciplinary approach. This reflection requires an interest in that production environment and affordances that provides speakers. This new epistemological positioning allows to rethink the description of Facebook, not as a communicative platform, but as a complex discursive environment by questioning the notions of identity, privacy and socio-emotional ties. The third and final part of this thesis presents the issues related to the study of a concrete case of natively digital writing. The description and analysis of birthday wishes on Facebook and methodological and theoretical tools adapted to digital environments used for this purpose. The description and analysis of birthday wishes on Facebook show two technolinguistic aspects in this type of discourse. The first is environmental action on language production, it is the case of technological preconstruction but also taking account of exposure of the message by the speakers (redefinition of socio-emotional bond). The second is the integration of technology within the same discursive forms, generating new technological genders as the discourse by button or statements increased as hashtags

Curci-Wallis, Annabell. "How Facebook Comments Reflect Certain Characteristics Of Islamophobia: A Critical Discourse Analysis." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Teologiska institutionen, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-384591.

Abstract:
This study is a contribution to the limited knowledge of how different types of media content (about Muslims and extremism) posted and shared on Facebook might influence corresponding user comments. Through analyzing the discourse of user comments this study aims to identify how comments might reflect certain characteristics of Islamophobia, and to which themes in Facebook posts commentators relate to the most. The linguistic analysis is guided by the use of critical discourse analysis. For the purpose of this study, three different types of articles/video and the corresponding comments are analyzed. Two of the articles/video that I will analyze are from unreliable media sources, and one of the articles is from a credible media source. The linguistic analysis showed that the majority of commentators expressed that they believe the claims made in the articles/video about Muslims and extremism are true. The discourse analysis further showed, the majority of articles/video and the majority of the analyzed corresponding comments reflected the [in the study] defined characteristics of Islamophobia. My findings confirmed similar studies done in the past.

Burke, Shani. "Anti-Semitic and Islamophobic discourse of the British far-right on Facebook." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2017. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/27177.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses critical discursive psychology to analyse anti-Semitic and Islamophobic discourse on the Facebook pages of two far-right organisations: Britain First and the English Defence League. Using the Charlie Hebdo attack as a time frame, I examine how the far-right manage their identity and maintain rationality online, as well as how users on Facebook respond to the far-right. This thesis demonstrates how Britain First and the English Defence League present themselves as reasonable in their anti-Semitic and anti-Islamic stance following the Charlie Hebdo shooting. Ultimately, I bring together the study of fascist discourse and political discourse on social media using critical discursive psychology, in a novel synthesis. The Charlie Hebdo shooting and the shooting at the kosher supermarket in Paris in January 2015 (as well as other attacks by members of the Islamic State) have led to Muslims being seen as a threat to Britain, and thus Muslims have been exposed to Islamophobic attacks and racial abuse. The current climate is a challenging situation for the far-right, as they are presented with the dilemma of appearing as rational and even mainstream, whilst nevertheless adopting an anti-Islamic stance. The analysis focuses on how Britain First and the English Defence League used the shooting at the Kosher supermarket to align with Jews in order to construct them as under threat from Islam, and promote its anti-Islamic stance. I also analyse visual communication used by Britain First to provide evidence that Britain First supported Jewish communities. Discourse from Facebook users transitioned from supportive towards Jews, to questioning the benefits that Jews brought to Britain, and expressing Holocaust denial. Furthermore, I discuss how other far-right politicians in Europe such as Geert Wilders from the Dutch Party for Freedom, portrayed himself as a reasonable politician in the anti-Islamic stance he has taken in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attack. Findings are discussed in light of how the far-right communicate about the Charlie Hebdo shooting whilst maintaining a reasonable stance when projecting anti-Semitic and Islamophobic ideology, and how such discourse can encompass hate speech. I demonstrate how critical discursive psychology can be used to show how various conflicting social identities are constructed and interact with each other online. This thesis shows how the far-right use aligning with Jews as means to present Muslims as problematic, and how such alignment has resulted in the marginalisation of both Jews and Muslims.

Marchesi, Silvia. "The natural mother : Discourse and representation of motherhood in an Italian Facebook group." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Tema Genus, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-148473.

Full text
Abstract:
Nature still plays a prominent role in shaping social expectations about the tasks of parents, especially mothers. The transition from the previous model of mothering and the contemporary one in Italy is definitely characterized by a revival of what is perceived as the ancient way of childrearing. At the same time, nature is also used to establish ideas about women and motherhood that are socially constructed. The gender inequality that characterizes maternity is somehow justified as part of an inevitable process where it is only or mainly the mother who has to stay home and provide care for children. The belief is well-established in Italian society and many women embrace it without any questioning. This research seeks to understand the appeal that the concept of the natural mother exercises today on many women. Empirically, the focus is on the Italian context. Departing from questions coming from the personal experience of motherhood, the author carried out an investigation of a Facebook group that provides support and information about a natural approach to motherhood. Ecofeminist and intersectional theory have been used in order to address the thorny relationship between women and nature. With the aid of discourse analysis and online ethnography methods, the author tried to disclose contemporary use of nature in the cultural representation of maternity. The study reveals the role that breastfeeding plays in present-day Italy in modeling a natural approach to motherhood. More precisely, breastfeeding is the core for understanding the idea of the natural mother. The significance of the research is that it highlights how breastfeeding raises the contradiction of the natural motherhood approach: on the one hand, it claims a stronger voice for women’s needs and expectations of their pregnancy and maternity experiences; on the other, it supports a conservative rhetoric about gender roles.

The most popular social network website of nowadays is about to have more than 900 millions of people connected by it. This is a start point to social relations and its features, in which we can find not only good communication, but concrete examples about how violence can be significant in such environment. This study makes a deep analysis about bullying in virtual context, showing how cyberbullying is being part and changing social organization with the massive participation of people on Facebook. For that, we show how communication technologies arrived until today with social networks and social networks websites, studying violence and its history and concept, showing through authors like Hannah Arendt (2009) how this is related to power and dominance, and comparing it to the contribution of Foucault (2009) about how surveillance is about punishment and control, then closing the theories about violence, surveillance and cyberbullying with Smith et al. (2009), talking about virtual violence and it relations to social networks websites. After that, as theorical reference and methodology, we use Critical Discourse Analysis with enphasis in Tridimentional Discourse Concept from Fairclough (2003) and Visual Grammar from Kress & Leeuwen (2006) to make a deep view into Facebook publications that present violence signals. For that we have a perspective not only at the publication itself, but in it production, distribution and reception, which makes this study caracterized like how cyberbullying can be found not only at school environment, but at virtual, adult and public context, what makes of bullying even more violent and full of abusive power

Abstract:
The easy accessibility, ubiquity, and plurilingualism of popular SNSs such as Facebook have inspired many scholars and practitioners of second language teaching and learning to integrate networked forms of communication into educational contexts such as language classrooms and study abroad programs (e.g., Blattner & Fiori, 2011; Lamy & Zourou, 2013; Mills, 2011; Reinhardt & Ryu, 2013; Reinhardt & Zander, 2011). At the same time, the complex and dynamic patterns of interaction that emerge in these spaces quickly push back upon standard ways of describing conversational genres and communicative competence (Kern, 2014; Lotherington & Ronda, 2014). Drawing from an ecological interactional analysis (Goffman, 1964, 1981a, 1981b, 1986; Kramsch & Whiteside, 2008) of the Facebook communications of three German-speaking academics whose social and professional lives are largely led in English, the authors consider the kinds of symbolic maneuvers required to participate in the translingual conversational flows of SNS-mediated communication. Based on this analysis, this article argues that texts generated through SNS-mediated communication can provide classroom opportunities for critical, stylistically sensitive reflection on the nature of talk in line with multiliteracies approaches.

Georgalou, Maria (Mariza). "Constructions of identity on Facebook : a discourse-centred online ethnographic study of Greek users." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.716383.

Full text
Abstract:
The social network site (SNS) of Facebook is a dynamic online socio-cultural arena which gives users ample and unprecedented opportunities for self-presentation through the meshing of language with other semiotic modes. Research on the subject has tended to focus on either a particular linguistic phenomenon in relation to identity (e.g. code-switching) or on a specific aspect of identity (e.g, ethnic identity) without treating multimodality in much detail. It has also been limited to exploring identity through information abstracted from member profiles alone and not interactions amongst participants, while it often lacks an ethnographic perspective. Moreover, identity on Facebook constitutes, in the main, a slice of larger-scale linguistic research on social media and not a fully-fledged study per se. In this light, the present study is in its entirety dedicated to the ways in which identity is discursively constructed within Facebook, drawing on insights from Greek users. More specifically, it investigates i) how Facebook users construct themselves, 2) how they are co-constructed by their Facebook friends, 3) the role of multimodality in these identity constructions, and 4) the kinds of textual practices that Facebook users follow to construct their identities. To this end, I adopted a discourse-centred online ethnographic approach (Androutsopoulos 2008), which combined a three-year systematic observation of specific Facebook profiles with the direct engagement with their owners (two females and three males; mean age = 28). The: data of the study comprise Facebook profile information, status updates, comments from interactions, video and article links, photos my Informants have taken themselves or have found elsewhere in the internet, interview excerpts, survey and field notes as well my informants’ comments on my analysis. Developing a data-driven, bottom-up approach of discourse analysis, this ■study: offers a multifaceted and nuanced view of identity on Facebook through the lenses of place, time, profession,; education, stance, and privacy. It identifies the ways in which the users locate themselves in terms of place and time; announce activities, share and broaden their expertise and buttress solidarity among colleagues and fellow students; communicate emotions, tastes, thoughts, opinions and assessments; and control the flow of information on their profiles to secure their privacy and hence identity. It is argued that apart from being a self-reflexive process, identity is intrinsically an interactive and collaborative process, shaped and reinforced by those with whom the users share a ‘friendship’ on Facebook. Focusing on discourse manifestations of identity, this study shows how Facebook can function as a cathartic gateway for self-expression, a powerful grassroots channel, a digital memory bank, a tool for promoting one’s work, a platform to exchange information, a dynamic knowledge depository, a meta-friend, and a research tool.

Abstract: Discourse on Slimming (DSE) circulates on Facebook and Instagram, producing meanings that affect subjects that daily accompanies profiles of laypeople and health professionals in these social networks. The sayings of common sense and those appropriated of the scientific community are repeated infinitely until their meanings become natural by the effect of ideology. Slimming never seemed so simple, and following the "tips" available on the internet, reinforces discourses that are not beneficial to the population, causing the risk of getting it sick even more, since obesity is considered a pandemic nowadays. Two subject positions (laypeople and health professionals) were followed, and their discourses composed the corpus, which gradually revealed itself and showed how in the DSE the subject moves at all times, identifying and disidentificating himself with meanings of a very heterogeneous discursive formation. Verbal and nonverbal were considered in their distinct materialities, meaning together, and even when there was a need for verbalization, the images and their singular way of meaning were highlighted. Because there is an approximation in the discourses of the two subject positions in a space where the lines that separate the scientific from the non-scientific are increasingly thin and bumpy, we choose the discourse of the housewife Eloisa Helena to show the movements of the DSE, their recurrent meanings and how ideology works in an era of post-truth, in which the meanings...
This research aims to analyze the stablished dialogical relations between the I and the other, that can be occupied by different subjects from the space of saying that they occupy on the page, these relations happen through the interaction with the quotes of songs and literature, which we call cultural products, these made in Facebook posts; on a specific page called “Brasileiríssimos”. The page is considered and claims to be a project that intents to publicize Brazilian culture, according to its own concept of what that is. There is a contractual relation between the page and its followers, given that the interactions about the quoted discourses are majorly positive. During the analysis, we were able to identify the dialogical relation between subjects that unfold from the quoted discourses and the comments that place each one of the subjects in a positive stance in relation to the content. Dialogy is a confrontation of intonations and value systems, which place the most varied visions about the world in a given position. Furthermore, engaging in a dialog means to listen to, respond to, and, on this page, agree with. Additionally, it is possible to learn, from the analysis, that the posts work beyond any set of rules or formal procedures, considering that the quotes cover the textual construction of meanings, the dialogical dimension of language and comprise the enunciative positions displayed by the page. Precisely because it is a space with unique singularities, the place of speech on Facebook is delimited, consisting of specific areas for the posts, the comments and the responses to the comments. Taking that into account, the I and the other could be, respectively: the follower and the page; the follower and the quoted discourse; the follower and other followers, and so on. In other words, the relation between the I the other are modified depending on the place they hold in each situation. Also worth noting, the relation of voices in interaction with the quoted discourses build, together, the image of both the page and the followers, whereas the meanings are built within the responsive comprehension of the subjects that interact with the utterances. On the proposed discussion about the concepts brought forth by the Circle of Bakhtin, it is possible to perceive the construction of meaning springing from the manner in which the citations are made, from how the page positions itself before the quoted discourses and from the relationship between the page and its followers. In order to make the analysis, concepts formulated by the Circle of Bakhtin were employed, especially the ones that approach the idea of subject, language, utterance, dialogism and citation.

Abstract:
The Facebook - Cambridge Analytica scandal came to light in 2018 revealing the problematic surveillance practices, and violations of privacy the companies allowed. The EU has introduced a privacy legislation, GDPR, that came into effect in 2018 shortly after the scandal erupted. Privacy is a key problem with modern technologies, as companies are trying to gain all possible data on individuals. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the surveillance-privacy nexus in the EU. This thesis asked the research question of: How has surveillance, through emerging technologies, affected the EU's ability to protect the right to privacy? To analyse this research question, this thesis used case study and post-structuralist discourse analysis on the recordings of Alexander Nix, CEO of Cambridge Analytica, at a marking festival, and of Mark Zuckerberg at the European Parliament. To analyse the recordings, biopower and panopticon were used as core theoretical tools. Through utilization of the methods and the theoretical tools, the findings of this thesis point to the conclusion that the EU’s ability to protect privacy from surveillance practices was not affected by the modern surveillance technology, and therefore the protection against exploitation of privacy remains low.

Abstract:
Corporations are increasingly using social media as a tool for communicating Corporate Social Responsibility. Marketing researchers have conducted ample research on the topic, however, a communication perspective is missing. In order to fill this gap and gain a nuanced understanding of how corporations are communicating CSR and potentially enacting power relations, this thesis focuses on linguistic elements in CSR- related Facebook posts. A content analysis was performed on the Facebook pages of three oil corporations, covering a total of 120 posts. Results demonstrate that all three companies aim for engagement with the audience, using various semantic and sensory interactivity elements, and maintaining an informal writing style. Despite the latter seemingly contradicting the assumption that corporations are enacting power, there are elements that support this claim. The corporations implement a constraint of content in their posts through the use of abstract writing, and include a constraint on positions through the narrative styles of accounting and advertisement, which offer limited encouragement for participation. Regarding rhetoric, the ethos included in the posts carried significant interconnection with the CSR topics discussed, through which the companies seemed to enforce constraints of content. Shell and Total emphasize certain environmental issues, while not focusing on other impacts. BP does not not target environmental issues and mainly highlights positive social impact. Although the enactment of power is not present in each of the linguistic structures of the posts, there are elements that indicate the presence of power relations, which could offer groundwork for further research.

Abstract:
Disertacija siekiama įvertinti pasirinkto socialinio tinklo viešojo diskurso potencialą demokratinių procesų palaikymui. Tirtos viešosios klimato kaitos diskusijos (komentarai) socialiniame tinkle Facebook. Pagrindinės to priežastys: a) auditorijų poliarizacija; b) nesutarimais grįsta politinė diskusija; c) nepakankamas dalyvių mokslinis ir politinis išprusimas; d) nerimtas dalyvių nusiteikimas.
The major purpose of this dissertation was to measure quality of preselected public discussions (in form of comments) generated on popular online social network Facebook. We used Discourse Quality Index as the main instrument to collect and analyze our empirical data. In particular, we measured how the quality of our discussions corresponded to the preconditions of Habermasian ideal discourse perception. In our analysis, we highlighted the role of Web 2.0 based online communications environments to support, promote or, possibly, neglect traditions and principles of deliberative democracy. Our results revealed that quality of the discussions we analyzed is not good enough; consequently, they cannot be considered by policymakers and have positive impact on decisions made. The main reasons of that are: a) audience polarization; b) dissensual political discourse; c) low participants’ scientific and political literacy; d) not serious or light role that participants undertake in the discourse.

Abstract:
In today's media landscape, the boundaries between traditional media and digital media are intertwined. Thus, many news outlets can use social media platforms such as Facebook to share their articles to reach a larger audience. At the same time, it creates an opportunity for readers to interact with the articles by leaving a comment.  The purpose of this study is to examine what Facebook users comment on posts that contain links to news articles about influences in relation to COVID-19. The selected news articles are published on BBC News and The Guardian Facebook pages. Our research question is: What do Facebook users comment on posts about influencers in relation to COVID-19? Besides, we have two subquestions to support the research question; (1) What are the similarities and differences in the responses when comparing the comments on posts from 2020 and 2021? (2) What are users' opinions about influencers in relation to COVID-19? To support the questions, we use the theories public sphere and discourse theory.  Regarding the method, the study is carried out with a qualitative approach, which means that we examined four Facebook posts, of which 50 comments from each post by using discourse analysis. The choice of posts is based on the articles in the posts being about influencers in connection with COVID-19. Then the material was processed in the program NVivo, where we could identify the most used words among the comments.  The results show that the themes that can be identified in the posts are influencers as a profession, influencers' ethical behaviour and society. Then we analyse the themes, some of the most used words and writing styles in different contexts. For example, many commentators argue that being an influencer is not a real job, and thus it is absurd that influencers are allowed to travel abroad even though the restrictions imply that UK residents can only travel abroad for work. In line with this, many also criticise restrictions as they apply only to a specific group, which influencers do not fall into the category. Other aspects that can be founded are that influencers can do whatever they want, and they are skilled at marketing.  We concluded in the study that the pictures and headlines serve as a basis for how the commentators can view influencers. Moreover, public opinion may differ depending on the knowledge of people regarding COVID-19. We can also indicate that Facebook users tend to leave comments with descriptive and convincing writing styles rather than explanatory.

Abstract: This research aims to analyze the stablished dialogical relations between the I and the other, that can be occupied by different subjects from the space of saying that they occupy on the page, these relations happen through the interaction with the quotes of songs and literature, which we call cultural products, these made in Facebook posts; on a specific page called "Brasileiríssimos". Taking that into account, the I and the other could be, respectively: the follower and the page; the follower and the quoted discourse; the follower and other followers, and so on... Disertacija siekiama įvertinti pasirinkto socialinio tinklo viešojo diskurso potencialą demokratinių procesų palaikymui. Tirtos viešosios klimato kaitos diskusijos (komentarai) socialiniame tinkle Facebook. Pagrindinės to priežastys: a) auditorijų poliarizacija; b) nesutarimais grįsta politinė diskusija; c) nepakankamas dalyvių mokslinis ir politinis išprusimas; d) nerimtas dalyvių nusiteikimas.

Abstract:
The aim for this study was to research the Swedish migration agencies’ communication on the social platform Facebook, and try to build an understanding of the agencies construction of non-political message to the public. We were also addressing the present discursive struggle in the comment section below the agency’s publications, to get a better understanding of why users are criticizing the agency, and how they are handling the critics.  This is because of the national politics surrounding migration can be seen as a “two-way-split”, where the public opinion is either very positive to the migration, or very negative. The study was conducted by analyzing two months’ worth of Facebook publications from the Swedish migrations agency, and included a total of 280 comments from users to study how struggles form between the “two-way-split”.  Critical discourse analysis and Fairclough's three-dimensional model was used as method to study the problem on a qualitative perspective. The appliance of Foucault's and Faircloughs theories about discourse have been applied on the material consistently throughout the study.  The results of the study show that the Swedish migration agency are using two discursive forms of presenting messages to the public. The first is a governmental discourse, were focus lies on a natural position to the politics with statistics and facts, the second is a storytelling discourse, which is more focused on presenting people and their individual stories to the public, but like the first one, with a natural position. The results also show that the engaging public is using a different, more public, discourse to the subject, and with that forms a lot of negative comments about the agency work and the politics behind it. In conclusion, we form the belief that the agency has adapted the new storytelling discourse as a communicative strategy to raise the trusts of the agencies work to the public, but the critical engaging public still mistrusts the work, and keeps the discursive struggle with the agency alive.

Abstract:
This research maps, analyzes and problematizes the notions that readers mobilize when evaluating the journalistic relevance of posts by reference Brazilian newspapers on Facebook. Using the methodology of Discourse Analysis, 59,780 comments were analyzed on 211 posts by the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo and O Globo, during April 2016. The analysis resulted in four indicators of relevance used by the readers: individual interest, attribution of importance, novelty and attribution of quality. Under individual interest, the readers linked the relevance of the news to the satisfaction of personal interests, taking self-referencing as the criterion. Attribution of importance was divided into three senses: rejection of the non-important, of news that the subjects consider useless or futile; indication of what is most important according to the reader's own opinion and hierarchization; and contestation of frameworks, questioning the types of information highlighted in the news. The lack of novelty was indicated as a value associated to relevance, since new is an expectation by the audience in relation to journalism. Attribution of quality was inferred from the deficiencies pointed out, such as misinformation and lack of exemption and plurality. The analysis also verified that the subjects perceive some of the logics of the digital environment, such as the increase of information sources, websites with restricted access of the newspapers, reading headlights only and the consciousness of click economy. Lastly, conversational situations between readers were identified regarding interest (personal and of others) and also regarding the relevance of entertainment news. From the theoretical survey associated to the analysis of the comments, we have concluded that relevance is constructed subjectively by readers, from social and ideological positions, who consider personal parameters of interest and parameters learned through the practice of journalistic reading. Readers mobilize different degrees of importance, relating it to novelty and journalistic quality, and are surrounded by connective, interactive and informative logics of social networks.

Abstract:
Today, nine out of ten municipalities are active on social media and it has become increasingly popular among municipalities that make use of placemarketing to promote their particular region. A problem that is raised in this study is that the population of the municipalities in northern Sweden often is in decline. The purpose of this study is to investigate how a democratic-controlled organization such as Luleå Municipality uses the social media Facebook in its placemarketing, to highlight a place of scale and to attract new residents and stakeholders to move to or visit the city. In order to answer the purpose I have with the help of a critical discourse analysis examined how Luleå Municipality using social media Facebook in their marketing of Luleå as a place. The results were then analyzed using theories of placemarketing, Norrland and the market-oriented municipality. The analysis showed that it is clear that Luleå Municipality use placemarketing on the Facebook page of Luleå. This is large parts of the posts was about highlighting the site's advantages in terms of events and activities and great nature and environment images.

This research, entitled “A imagem de si em textos no facebook: modos de ser do sujeito”-“The image of themselves in texts on facebook: ways of being of the subject”, was aimed at understanding how one builds their discursive ethos on it, analyzing discourse strategies used to build one’s own image, as well as pointing out aspects which contribute to the teaching-learning process in schools. The relevance of this thesis consists of enhancing knowledge about this new virtual discursive person, who is empowered by digital technologies and different discourses present in our contemporaneity, builds meaningful images in post-modernity. For this purpose, as a theoretical support, this research was based on Bauman (2001), Lemos (2002), Lyotard (1988), concerning post-modern society traits, Bakhtin (1986), in the study of the dialog oriented, declarative and social character of language, Pêucheux (2005), in language conceptions as a result of senses and the discursive person, and Maingueneau ( 2005, 2008) in the analyses of the construction of the discursive ethos. A qualitative and interpretative research was made, and the corpus analyzed consisted of six posts taken from personal profiles on facebook, which were selected from a group of a hundred fifty-two profiles collected previously. The analyses of the data made it possible to identify and characterize six relevant types of ethos on facebook: ethos of engagement, ethos of optimism, ethos of ostentation, ethos of intimacy, ethos of sensuality and ethos of religion, which are based in accordance with people who are generated by cyber culture in the emerging culture of postmodern society.

Police presence on social media in Sweden has grown in recent years. New social networking tools have resulted in changes of practice in communication. This qualitative study examines how one local Police department in Sweden presents themselves on Facebook. Drawing on critical discourse analysis this paper focuses on uncovering personal values and power relations in various Police discourses but also how identity is shaped. Analyzing one year of Facebook posts from Polisen Södermalm, we identified several thematic discourses and found that content in the informal discourse reproduce some values not supported by policy or principles of public servantship. Our study contributes with qualitative analysis and findings in a field that still needs more work.

Abstract:
The world's high meat consumption is one of the main causes of global warming, it increases the risk of cancer and heart diseases, and causes a lot of suffering for animals. In December 2017, SVT showed the TV program Köttets lustar, which highlighted the different aspects of meat consumption. The program put a lot focus on how animals are affected by the meat industry, and the question of whether it is ethical to eat meat. The program reached great attention in mainstream media and on social media.   This study investigated the different discourses in the question of meat consumption in Köttets lustar, how they were framed by SVT, and the struggle between the discourses in the debate that the programme generated on SVT’s Facebook page. The aim was to see how the framing affected the debate on Facebook. The used method was Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis. In the analysis of the programme, six discourses were found: the animal rights discourse, the discourse about veganism as a sect, the masculine discourse, the public health discourse, the climate discourse and the economic discourse. In the debate on Facebook, the struggle was primarily conducted between the animal rights discourse and the economic discourse.   The animal rights discourse advocated that we should not consume meat at all, and used arguments from the climate discourse and the public health discourse to strengthen its thesis, while all the other discourses advocated continued meat consumption. The main problem with meat consumption was that we eat too much meat, and not the ethical question. The economic discourse - which emphasizes the consumer's responsibility to choose the "right Swedish meat" in a fair amount that takes better account of climate, animals, health and the environment, was dominant. The economic discourse also increased its dominance by placing greater emphasis on parts of the animal rights aspect, which makes it more difficult for the animal rights discourse to enhance its power.

Abstract:
Internationally recognized for and culturally self-identifying as a gender equality advocate, Sweden has seen a recent uptick in popular support among women voters for its far-right nationalist political party, the Sweden Democrats (SD). While nationalist movements are primarily distinguished by their nativist political rhetoric, academic study has consistently shown that nationalism also consistently promotes a traditional gender duality while denouncing feminism and gender equality practices. Likewise, SD also consistently opposes feminist and gender equality practices in stark contrast with mainstream Swedish political parties. This qualitative discourse analysis collected, categorized, and analyzed recent Facebook posts circulated by the Sweden Democrat Women's Association (Sverigedemokraterna kvinnoförbund) leadership to identify why women (ostensibly) served by Swedish state feminism vote for and even join SD in a leadership capacity. By utilizing constructivist theoretical frameworks of social and cultural identity with a post-structural analytical methodology focusing on problem conception, representation and dissemination, the resulting analysis shows that the dominating discursive theme is practically summarized as: "(in)security." In short, SD women perceive Sweden's (equality) feminism as unrelatable, irrelevant and/or intrusive in an "everyday" existence framed by a rapidly changing Swedish society due to record immigration, increased economic insecurity, and a weakening welfare state. In closing, three prime research areas are identified for future study: image-based content analysis of SD's political messaging, increased incorporation of security frameworks in investigative writing, as well as broadened research into how Swedish equality feminism can best include two consistently detached societal clusters: native-Swedish conservative and non-Western immigrant women.

Abstract:
Modern information and communications technology has brought about radical changes in the way we live and communicate. However, new technologies have also sparked scepticism and created controversies. A recent example is the opposition to the fifth-generation mobile network technology, 5G. According to the established science community, there is no evidence that 5G would pose a health hazard. Still, a growing anti-radiation movement has claimed that the technology will cause new and increased radiation risks. This essay explores the Swedish 5G critical movement that has grown large on Facebook. The aim is to examine how risk, fear, and mistrust in relation to the mobile network 5G are constructed discursively within the 5G critical movement, based on two of the largest and most active 5G critical groups on the platform. Drawing on a social constructionist approach, the study focuses on three analytical themes: risk, fear, and mistrust. These themes also form the basis of the theoretical framework, consisting of perspectives from Ulrich Beck’s (2012) risk society and Frank Furedi’s (2006) theory on culture of fear. The study is based on a netnographic collection method where both linguistic and visual data have been collected and analysed in a multimodal discourse analysis. The result of the analysis shows that risk, fear, and mistrust are constructed via "versions of the world" in which the risks of 5G are presented as real, acute, and threatening and actors in power are portrayed as unreliable, corrupt, and incompetent. These discursive patterns are both linguistic and visual; they take place not only through meaningful choices of words, narratives, and signs but also by using so-called internet memes and emojis. The results also show that sociological perspectives on risk, fear, and mistrust can deepen the understanding of these constructions and provide perspectives on how the movement relates to the surrounding society. The analysis indicates that the definitional struggles and different claims of rationality that Beck (2012) has described as typical for the risk society also characterize the construction of risks related to 5G. Furedi’s (2006) themes of fear also deepens the understanding of how risks are assigned a threatening content through social and cultural processes. Moreover, the analysis reveals that distrust of established expertise can lead to the emergence of an alternative expertise, which has been described by both Beck and Furedi. However, the results also suggest that social organization online entails some new conditions that have the potential to shift traditional positions of power described in theory.

Abstract:
Our study examines the phenomenon echo chamber and how it manifests itself on Facebook pages of Swedish news media. Our material consists of five opinion articles from five different Swedish newspapers, as well as the comments section connected to the opinion articles. The study’s theoretical framework consists of two main theories: selective exposure and Fairclough’s theory of critical discourse analysis. Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis also constitute as our main method, which we use to analyse the discursive practice used in opinion articles and comments sections connected to them. The result shows that an echo chamber is observable in almost all of the comment sections, which indicates a political polarization in how readers consume Swedish news media.

Abstract:
The present research aims to analyse the behaviour of users of the Facebook fanpage “Ni Una Menos Perú: tocan a una, tocan a todas” when interacting in the comments of posts that they might agree or not with. For this, we have examined the behaviour of users based in the comments and subcomments that they have written on ten posts about the legalization of abortion in Perú. After going through a literature review, it was decided to categorise the responses to the posts into five roles of behaviour: full support, partial support, neutral, partial rejection and full rejection. Then, we will analyse the users starting with two categories: the identity they show on Facebook and the way they express themselves in their responses to the posts. Besides that, it has been considered the way the users react to the different approaches that can be find in the posts. On the same note, this research proposes a new analytical tool to analyse the behaviour of users that allows us to focus on all the different elements that shape the behaviour of the users while maintaining an individual perspective of each one.

Magnér, Linnéa, and Emelie Sandberg. Thesis, Karlstads universitet, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-83382.

Full text
Abstract:
May the 14th of 2020 the Swedish celebrity Paolo Roberto spent the evening in an apartment in a fancy neighborhood in Stockholm with a woman from one of the poorest countries in Europe, and was caught in the act of purchasing sexual services from her. The star chef, actor and TV host confessed to the police later that night. In an interview the following day, Roberto himself says that he suspects the woman was not there willingly. The news of his crime generated strong reactions in comment sections on social media. The purpose of the study is to examine how users express themselves in comment sections under a controversial news article about an emotionally charged subject. We will therefore analyze how users in a particular comment section on Facebook reacted to the interview with Paolo Roberto in TV4. The thesis is interested in how participatory journalism contributes to the public discourse about the emotionally charged subject of sex purchases, as well as other discourses that we may encounter. The study aims to answer two research questions; one that examines what reactions the comment section contains and one that examines how these reactions can be understood in the light of discourses of prostitution and media ethics. The theorical framework of the essay is based on participatory journalism and discourse theory. The thesis is a qualitative text analysis and utilizes the textual analytical dimension of Anabela Carvalho’s apparatus for critical discourse analysis (2008). From the empirical material patterns have been identified and 12 of these were selected for deeper analysis. Some examples of these are that many describe Roberto’s behavior as “sobbing” and controlling the narrative. A large part of the comment section blames TV4 for “letting” him do this. Some challenge the ethics and editorial decision of TV4 while others disagree with the Swedish model for prostitution and the mainstream view on purchasing sex, which will quickly be confronted by others. The conclusions of the thesis are that the prostitution discourse is dominated by the perspective that it is morally wrong to purchase someone else’s body, that it is not ethical to interview a perpetrator the way TV4 did and that there is demand for agenda-driven journalism. Finally, the conclusion is drawn that the authors of the essay are part of the large majority of scientists who see a democratic potential in participatory journalism but are disappointed by the fact that it is not harnessed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to investigate the confrontation of the Facebook group that was developed in response to the interview with the rap artist Greekazo in Malou Efter Tio. The study investigates the research questions: How is the discursive practice of Facebook utilized to challenge a mainstream television production? How are the stereotypes of contemporary marginalized rap artists reproduced in the Swedish news media? Our key interest lies in the moment of conflict between a section of the public and a mainstream media organization where we discuss how the media representation of a Swedish contemporary rap subculture is confronted by a minority of people online. To support the research questions, the study relies on two additional working questions: How do resistance and group formations develop in terms of dynamics within the Facebook comment section of Malou Efter Tio? Why are the stereotypes of contemporary marginalized rap artists reproduced this way in the Swedish news media? The focus is to analyze how the discursive formation of Facebook presents alternative viewpoints to challenge the mainstream media.  The theoretical framework of the essay is constituted by the theory of social discourse in which we have embarked on the critical discourse theory (CDA) by Norman Fairclough (1993). This approach uses theories and methods to theoretically problematize and investigate the relationship between the text, the discursive practice, and the sociocultural dimension (Fairclough, 1993; Winther Jørgensen & Phillips, 2000). The notion of media representation has been approached from two perspectives: The Agenda Setting theory and the Framing Theory, here we have particularly emphasized the idea of moral panic in which we have investigated how Malou Efter Tio was speaking about moral panic fears concerning the contemporary rap subculture in Sweden.  Previous research includes Djerf-Pierre and Shehata (2017) in which they applied the Agenda Setting theory in a Swedish news media environment, Nilsson (2009) who investigated the media representation in Swedish television, Lindholm (2014) who researched the notion of self-presentation in Swedish rap music, and Johnen, M., Jungblut, M. & Ziegele, M. (2018) who investigated what incites participation in online discussions.  In the analysis, we distinguished three prominent themes: social injustice, responsibility, and solidarity. These themes were established from the selection process in which 19 Facebook comments were collected and analyzed through the critical discourse analysis. The study showed how the Facebook discourse was utilized as a space for resistance of which the dispute betokened an abruption in ideology. This abruption was consequently challenged by the Facebook users in which they collectively built authority throughout the affordances of the Facebook discourse. The study will end with a discussion concerning the role of Facebook in a wider context in which the democratic space of the platform is contextualized from a societal and political point of view.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine how Swedish fans of the TV-series Skam use the Facebook group Kosegruppa Sverige in order to construct and maintain a fandom, and how fan practices can contribute in creating identity among the members of the group. Theories related to fan research, discourse psychology and intersectionality were applied, as well as a brief overview of earlier research results related to these areas. By using a netnographic approach combined with a discourse analyses, posts made by fans on Kosegruppa Sverige during December 2016 were examined and analyzed. Three main fan practices were found to be used in constructing fandom in the group; fans made their own material such as edits, videos and attire that had a connection to the narrative, they acted out on their fandom both by adapting their language and looks, and finally by buying and selling merchandise and thus collecting things related to the series. Identity was created through intersectional perspectives of gender, sexuality and age. Finally, the study concluded that fandom could be seen as an integral tool within media production, which blurs the line between producers and consumers.

Abstract:
This essay shows up the development of didatic sequence (SD) proposed by the material of studant book `high school in web- didatic sequence- opinion article from the State of Sao Paulo provincy, involving the social network Facebook. The development of didatic sequence in the social network Facebook provides opportunities for the teachers to follow the daily activities, being able to, with that, oriantate the educatee at any moment. This job will involve just the section that refers to the textual production writed of the refered genre, following the descriptors of the common basic contents (CBC) - high school - portuguese language from the State of Minas Gerais (MINAS GERAIS, 2006). The issue that motivated the search were the unsatisfactory results exhibited on the writings of the nacional test of high school - ENEM of 2012, from the staduals schools of Minas Gerais and the gap among those results and the results of particular schools, which are far higher in relation to public schools. The objective of this search is to offer subsidies to the portuguese teachers in order to develop a didatic sequence using the social network Facebook. Specifically, the objective is that teachers who are following these proposals could develop new pedagogical practices making use of available technology, giving a contribution to the full formation of the educatee. Methodologically, this is a research of qualitative character, in which the data were analyzed from the Interactionism Socio Discourse theory, principally about conceptions particularly attributed to Dolz, Norerraz and Schneuwly (2004) and Bronckart (1999), given the influence of these researchers on several government documents such as: Parameters National Curriculum (BRAZIL, 2000), PCN + (BRAZIL, 2002), Curriculum Guidelines for Teaching Middle OCEM (BRAZIL, 2006) and Common Basic Contents (MINAS, 2006)

The objective of this research is to analyze what the ideological discourse of the linked advertising on social networking site Facebook, a Brazilian beer brand. In seeking to achieve this goal, it was possible to question about the relations of power, which in this context are related to the way that an alcoholic beverage demand advertising set up on the receiving audience. If dealing with a product that can cause addiction, social problems and be consumed by an underage audience, it is very important to understand what discursive strategies are employed by the brand. For theoretical foundation was made a literature review about advertising & advertising, online social media, consumer, discourse and ideology. The sources were obtained through desk research of qualitative nature, which lasted two years and six months, starting in January 2013 and ending in June 2015. The research corpus was composed of advertisements with more tanned in each semester , distributed through institutional page of Skol beer brand on Facebook, which totaled ten ads compounds for image and text multimodality. For ideology of identification were categorized eight discursive objects that make up three discursive formations, which are: positioning, educating consumers and consumption as entertainment. The analysis method was Discourse Critical Analysis focused on three-dimensional model of discourse proposed by Fairclough (2001), along with multimodal analysis Machin & Mayr (2012). The results suggest that the Skol beer brand, seeks to sustain consumerism speech order, or market ideology.

This dissertation derives from the continuation of reflections started in previous researches (scientific initiation and term paper), when we use the discursive analysis of a “new” type of text, formed by short phrases published in social networks, such as Facebook. Those phrases present a particular formal structure, and their meanings play different roles in virtual interaction. We designate those “phrases” circling in the virtual environment, which are selected, highlighted, and have images added to help build a universal text, as shared messages. We focus, at this master’s research, therefore, to the analysis of constitution and sharing practices of some messages with pieces of text from books and interviews, which enunciation are related to contemporary literary authors renowned in Brazil – like Caio Fernando Abreu and Clarice Lispector, and others that although have fewer cultural prestige, show a wide renown between groups of young readers, i.e. Tati Bernardi. This way, our corpus is made of messages from three sharing pages: O Mundo De Caio Fernando Abreu e Clarice Lispector; Caio, Tati e Clarice o que me diz; and Trechos de Livros. All these pages dedicate to publish messages related to the authors in their names or that present a collection of pieces of text from various recent published books, from which is common posting messages with authorship given to Caio Fernando Abreu and Clarice Lispector, specifically. In this dissertation, evidences of how the authorship works along with the construction and sharing of those messages are analyzed, through a formal analysis of them, as well as an analysis of the readers’ comments about the authorship, under the theoretical-methodological perspective of two contemporary theories that allow us to study the question of reading: the french Discourse Analysis, and specially the theories from works of Michel Foucault about the “author function”; and the Cultural History of reading, mainly about the works of Roger Chartier about reading actually – theories that, in their articulation, allow us to list permanencies and mutations through which our actual reading practices go. We observe that, although recent, the production and sharing of those speeches are submitted to an authorship working mechanism relatively similar to printed order. About the readers’ comments, we notice two speaking forms: one that copy, in a certain way, the form and content expressed by the messages, applying aspects of the “poetic function”, at the author’s style at expressing its impressions about the message; and another one that focuses on questioning the authorship of those speeches, citing the original sources of the texts, or questioning and recognizing vestiges that allow the identification of a correct authorship attribution in those messages. This way, we can analyze some characteristics of this new reader’s/author’s profile that emerge with the creation and diffusion of new technologies.

Abstract:
Cited as the main source of entertainment and social interaction today, social networks have conquered virtual space and have become propitious digital tools of expressive speech that are able to make use of diverse forms of communication. As such, these networks have turned into an entanglement of multiple languages, producing all kinds of sentiments and tend to operate in accordance with the wishes and intentions of those who use them. This dissertation discusses the abilities that social network users develop in order to build images of themselves using these mediums of speech. The scope of this research is to investigate the political Discursive Ethos through the social network, FACEBOOK, utilizing discursive constructions that emphasize identifying traits and credibility used to make a good impression and achieve success in political and social arenas. For the development of this study we orient ourselves using the theory and methodology of the French Discourse Analysis, focusing on the specific works of Maingueneau (2001/2008), Pêcheux (1997a/1997b), Charaudeau (2011), Amossy (2008) and other authors who have developed research on the discursive Ethos and its operation in the construction of discourse. We will also look at analyses linked to the field of communication concerning the study of social networks. The body of this work is composed of data from the network FACEBOOK, where discourses which match the objectives mentioned above will be analyzed. The results acquired through this process will demonstrate that what persists at this juncture is the fact that these constructed discourses tend to control speech patterns, making Ethos the instrument that governs our interactions, constructed from history and traversed by ideologies, the subjects in these networks and beyond, manifest themselves through the discourses of these social network users.

Abstract:
The development of communication technology has also created new structures, able to challenge the traditional power roles of the communicative process. Social media have become a fruitful arena of this change due to their users having the possibility to respond to the producers’ messages. Thus, the traditional lineal structure turns to an interactional one and consequently, the lines become blurred between the roles of the dominant and dominated as assumed by the senders/producers and the receivers respectively. Controversial issues shed light on this ‘battle for power’, such as the sustainability actions and reporting of Zara and H&M. These companies are the leaders of the fast fashion industry; one of the most ‘unsustainable’ fields. Through a critical discourse analysis of the posts that the companies launch on their Facebook-sponsored accounts as well as the comments related to sustainability that they obtain from their users, the communicative process occurring in social media can be assessed. The aim of this analysis is to provide an insight into how the communicative process between sender and receiver in social media creates public opinion and affects the development of sustainability discourse. It has been shown that users have found in social media a powerful tool to challenge the companies’ power: they can comment on the informative product in question. Also the users have taken the sustainability discourse as the required ‘object’ when questioning a product’s reliability. The latter is in some way another means with which to challenge the companies’ power.

Wonder Woman character is acknowledgedly feminist and figured, along with Superman and Batman, one of DC Comics's top superheroes. She is the female's best-known female superhero. However, it was only in 2017, 75 years after its release, that the character gains a cinematographic work of its own. With the advent of information technology and the appropriation of the spaces of social networking sites, the theme of feminism has been gaining strength and has been widely discussed. This study analyzes the discussion on social networking sites on gender issues, in relation to the Wonder Woman movie release, in four publications on the official Facebook page. We investigated, in the comments on the release of the film, the presence of a debate on feminist issues, in order to identify the topics discussed. The idea is that the film would be able to mobilize discourses about female empowerment. We trace a brief history of how gender issues have been discussed from the 1930s to the present day. We discuss how gender studies are understood today and about the presence of feminism on the Internet. Questions about power and discourse were brought to the fore anchored in the precepts of Bourdieu (1996) and Foucault (2013), who describe elements to be considered in speech production as being a product of power relations in a society. We understand language as a form of naturalizing power through the concept of habitus (BOURDIEU 1989), and we consider it as one of the ways of perpetuating gender inequality. We recourse to Recuero (2012, 2014) to describe computer mediated communication and its relevant aspects for the analysis of this study, understanding it as a social product, capable of simulating elements of oral conversation. We understand, as Herring (2001), that textual communication is part of the discourses that come to construct behaviors. Thus, we use theoretical and methodological contributions of the Computer Mediated Analysis Discourse, developed by Herring (2001, 2004) in an attempt to find patterns capable of indicating the presence of a discussion about female empowerment, as well as to identify other recurrent patterns of discourse.

Abstract:
Recent years were marked by a major transformation in human and social communication, owing to the advances in ICT and thus social media technologies. Social media have introduced new communication practices, provided newfound interaction patterns, created new forms of expressions, stimulated a wide civic participation, and so forth. They are rapidly evolving and their significance is increasing while their role is changing in social and political processes. Moreover, they are increasingly becoming an instrumental approach to, and power for, social change due to their potential in bringing new dynamics to its underlying processes such as public mobilization. Indeed, more recently, they played an important role in what has come to be known as the Arab Spring. Particularly, in the recent Egyptian revolt, social media, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, have been transformed into effective means to fuel revolt and bring about political transformation. This marked a victory for social media and corroborates that they are an enduring resource for the successful mobilization of bottom-up, grassroots movements and leaderless collective actions. This, in turn, has stimulated discussions about their impact on political change, giving rise to a new discourse, what might be identified as ‘social media for social change’. This discourse is gaining an increased attention in the media and the academia: many journalists and authors talk and write about it. Particularly, research and publications by journalists emphasize the fundamental role the online media play in the reproduction of the role of social media in the Egyptian revolution and political change. The aim of this study is to establish, by means of a discourse analysis, how and with what purpose in mind, the online media report on – represent – the relationship between social media and the Egyptian uprising and political transformation, a social relationship that seems to be overstated and constructed in various ways by different journalists. This critical reading reveals what is undervalued, overvalued and excluded, as well as the intersection between the media discourse, subjects and ideology. To achieve this aim, the discourse analysis approach was used to examine the set of selected media texts. The media representation is deterministic as to the role of social media in the Egyptian revolution and political transformation, i.e. it exaggeratedly depicts the power of social media by describing the Egyptian revolution as a Facebook revolution. It also tends to be rhetorical and exclusionary. The event of the revolution and the reality of political change in Egypt are far more complicated than how it is reconstructed by most journalists. Further, it plays a role in constructing a positive image of different corporate players, namely Facebook, Twitter and media companies, as well as in constituting their identities. A great highlight is given to represent these actors. In addition, the media representation does ideological work. It sustains and serves corporate power as well as advances ideological claims. This discursive research enhances the current understanding of the phenomenon of social media in relation to revolution and political change, although the findings may not be generalizable.

Abstract:
This study aims to see how H&M are using crisis communication through Facebook to investigate if they are able to contain their reputation and trustworthiness during and after crisis. This has been done by a quantitative content analysis and the qualitative critical discourse analysis with Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model. The study is based on theories relating to crisis communication, brand preservation, ethnicity and rhetoric. The study has been conducted on an official statement H&M made on its Facebook page where 579 comments were analyzed. In the quantitative analysis, three themes emerged from which qualitative research took its starting point to prevent the occurrence of subjective interpretations of the material. In the qualitative analysis, these themes developed and deployed in the categories racism, defense and insultment with subsequent subcategories. These themes were analyzed further in relation to the theoretical framework. H&Ms statement and answers have been analyzed separately. The study found that crises based on trust such as this children's collection probably trigger harder against smaller companies that are more dependent on reputation and credibility than world- leading clothing companies like H&M.

What are the senses? effects generated on black women from the notion of nappy hair on hair-focused Facebook communities? This questioning drives this research, which seeks to answer the question under P?cheux?s Discourse Analysis theoretical contribution. The proposal is to present the aspects related to the concepts of senses, ideological formation, discursive formation, interdiscourse, discursive memory and silencing, elements that are intrinsic to the notion of discourse and to the subjects that are discussed on Facebook communities. Black women occupy the place of the discourse?s object, which produces and reproduces senses based on certain conditions of production. Thus, on Facebook there is a competition between different discursive formations, allowing the resumption, resignification and rupture of historically constructed meanings about black women and beauty standards. Through the posts and comments on chosen communities, it was analyzed how social, historical and ideological issues permeate the discourses about the black women subject and the process of acceptance and / or rejection of nappy hair in the virtual environment, which reflects, in many aspects, what is present in the real environment. Senses that are attributed to hair do not refer only to the aesthetic, but to the way the image of the black women was socially constituted.
Abstract:
This research aims at comparing digital identity and nature of the peculiarities of interactive written language on two digital social networks (Facebook and Renren). We are interested in the difference between the digital identity of these two digital social networks, one is worldwide used (except a few countries such as China) and the other is mainly used by the Chinese. Is that the digital identity of one person is also the same on these two different social network sites? How the users interact and express vis-à-vis different friends in different digital context? Can the online interactions manifest emotional aspects? In order to respond to these problems, this research questions the digital identity and their function in the identity construction, the relational and social aspects of online interaction, the types of emotions expressed in the online interactions, and the role of emoticon in the expression of emotions of these two digital social networks. The data analysis enables to identify the linguistic, social and emotional phenomena in online interactions of the corpus of study. Interviews and questionnaires clarify the analysis of the experience and the feeling of the different actors. So throughout the description of case use of Facebook and Renren by four newly arrived Chinese students in France, this work attempts to better understand the features of digital identity and interactive exchange of these two digital social networks

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Political Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
In the 17th and 18th centuries the bourgeois public sphere emerged as the conceptual space between the public, with its enclosed institutions and organisations, and the circle of the private life. It is within this more or less autonomous space that public discourse took place and public opinion, as a function of public discourse, was produced. The public sphere was realised as a necessary precondition of deliberative democracy where it needed to manifest commitments to freedom and equality in the communicative interaction between those partaking in the deliberative process. Since the 17th and 18th centuries, the public sphere has undergone various transformations and, even though it is largely argued that the utopian public sphere as conceptualised by Habermas does not yet exists, it is regarded as a necessary precondition that all democracies should strive towards. Since the 19th century, media has been one of the main intermediary institutions of the public sphere. Initially, the earlier mass media of press and broadcasting were regarded as adequate and beneficial for the conduct of democratic politics and the facilitation of public opinion in the public sphere. Information flow was, however, vertical and the heightened commercialisation experienced within the media market lead to the neglect of democratic communication roles between the public itself and the leaders, institutions and organisations. These forms of mass communication thus limited access and discouraged active political participation and deliberative dialogue within the public sphere. In the 20th and 21st centuries, new media, especially the internet, have been hailed as a potential way to break away from the vertical information flow and to create new arenas for public discourse. One emerging contending form of new media is social networking sites (SNSs). Even though SNSs were not initially developed for political reasons, they have been utilised by political figures in an attempt to broaden voter reach and to enhance their campaigns. Amongst the SNSs available on the internet, Facebook has emerged as the largest, fastest growing and most popular SNS amongst internet users between the ages of 18 and 24 in the world. In the past, this age demographic has shown a disinterest in politics and has thus been recognised as the previously politically disengaged age demographic. American president Barack Obama realised the potential of Facebook and incorporated it in his new ii media campaign during the presidential election of 2008. Facebook enabled Obama to expand his voter reach and communicate with the previously politically unengaged age demographic. It also enabled him to create an arena where political information regarding the candidate, campaign and relevant political issues can be provided. This opened a communication flow between Facebook members and the president. Arenas for public discourse were also established and the potential of Facebook to facilitate public opinion was realised. In this study, the question is asked whether Facebook, as a SNS, can be seen as an adequate forum where public discourse takes place and public opinion, as the function of public discourse, is facilitated. This study will therefore aim to explore whether a Facebook, as SNS, can be seen as a public sphere. With the help of a case study of the 2008 Obama campaign, Facebook has shown the potential to allow for public discourse to take place. Thus the notion of Facebook as facilitator of public opinion is supported by this study.

Abstract:
The essay To negotiate truth is a cultural analytical study of the boundary work that takes place in the comment sections, more specifically in relations to the climate change debate and Greta Thunberg’s climate activism. This paper deals with empirical material in the form of comments obtained from the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet’s and Expressen’s comment field on Facebook. The data-gathering method used for this paper is digital ethnography. This study aims to create an understanding of how argumentation is presented in open social arenas such as Expressen and Aftonbladet's comments field. The purpose of the study has been to show how the contested claims and facts are legitimized and negotiated in the comment fields. The theoretical framework has consisted of discourse theory and Boundary objects theory. The questions to be answered in the study is: In what way is truth constructed in the debate? How are the various claims of truth legitimized? In what way are facts and science used in the legitimization of the different claims of truths? The analysis shows that truth is constructed in many different ways, partly through what i choose to call denial and distrust discourse. The analysis also showed how climate research and the climate can be seen as a boundary object and be used to stabilize the denial discourse further. The result also showed that scientific evidence can be used in a variety of ways in the legitimization of the different claims of truth. On the one hand, there is a demand for more nuanced research to be presented in the media, this creates an image that there are two sides of climate science that are of equal importance. The analysis also showed how mistrust and doubt against established media, political processes and science in general can be used in the legitimization of various statements of truth. I also claim that Greta can be seen as a boundary object in the ongoing negotiation. The use of religious metaphors also proves to be of great importance in trying to undermine the climate issue and climate research in general.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the journalistic discourses about gender violence of three Spanish newspapers and three Italian ones, on their Facebook pages. We analyze the ideology, in order to investigate if this kind of news refers to an ideological social perspective about gender violence or to a patriarchal one. Taking into account two central aspects of social networks, multimodality and users’ interaction, we analyze the verbal discourses and the pictures that go with them. We consider also the users’ comments, looking at them as a manifestation of the citizen journalism and as texts that can reflect the newspapers’ ideology. We adopt the perspective of the Critical Discourse Analysis, through a linguistic-discursive perspective and a journalistic one, giving centrality to the cognitive aspect. Obviously, the analysis develops through a methodological perspective on one hand with linguistic-cognitive and semiotic aspects, on the other hand with analytic journalistic aspects, focused on the framing theory. Furthermore, we adopt an analytical approach through a feminist epistemology, talking about victims and aggressors. The results show that the Spanish and the Italian press still reveal a representation of the gender violence through a patriarchal ideology, even though they also have discursive elements from which we can infer a social perspective. Also, it is demonstrated that the ideology of newspapers discourses has effects on the users’ comments. Finally, taking into account the newspapers discourses and the users’ ones, we see that there are differences between Spanish discourses and Italian ones in the representation of victims and aggressors.

Abstract:
In July 2018, Bulgaria’s Constitutional Court rejected the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence (better known as the Istanbul Convention). This rejection came following a wave of civic activism, which scholars characterized as the first anti-gender campaign in Bulgaria. Three years after the Constitutional Court’s decision, the Istanbul Convention continues to occupy online and offline public space, still provoking controversy and sparking heated debates. Employing critical discourse analysis (CDA), this thesis analyzes comments under Facebook posts mentioning the Istanbul Convention between 2017 and 2021. The posts appear on the Facebook pages of two ideologically opposing civil organizations that actively participated in the debate around the Convention’s ratification. Using Reyes’ (2011) concept of de/legitimization discourse, this paper analyses the online discussion around the Convention, exploring how de/legitimization discourses are utilized by the two ideologically opposing communities. To account for the role of Facebook as a discursive practice, the study further explores how the architectures and affordances of Facebook as a platform contribute to the polarization of the IC discussion. The analysis reveals the instrumentality of de/legitimization discourses for constructing pro- and anti-IC activist groups, for redefining the meaning of ‘gender’ in Bulgarian society, and later for transforming the meaning of the phrase ‘the Istanbul Convention’ to outgrow a reference to one document and become a signifier of values. Additionally, the study highlights three types of Facebook affordances that were found to affect the discussion’s polarization: identity, social, and functional.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the study of digital identity of two Tunisian political parties that are most notorious in Tunisia: Call of Tunisia (Nida Tounes) and the Ennahda Movement. The challenge is to study their identity construction from the images posted on the social network Facebook from their respective leaders: Beji Caid Essebsi (BCE) and Rached Ghannouchi (RG). It is about deciphering the images of leaders, rich in signs and symbols to identify the symbolic contrasting representations. Considering the image as a digital iconic speech, we are implementing a methodological protocol which is based on a dual analysis: a qualitative analysis of the 20 most sought images, between 2012 and 2013, and other quantitative treating reactions they generate. To do so, we have adopted a multidisciplinary approach based on the model of the iconic argument (Adam and Bonhomme, 2007). Based on the intrinsic description of the images, we have detected a set of formal elements that we have organized into six codes: linguistic, typographical, morphological, photographic, kinesic and chromatic. Certain codes are highly repetitive within the whole set of images, endows them with a certain identity that is built on that of the leaders. This is a representative paradigm that allows a topical indexing in turn generating values that enhance the putting forward and value of each political entity. Whether it is the charismatic and authoritarian image of BCE or that of the pious man and the spiritual guide RG, they represent constants that we have synthesized in two main messages: the charismatic figure of the leader and the sense of belonging. The identity construction of the political actor takes place though the contradiction of representing a being who must be recognized as unique, singular and collective while at the same time triggering the longing for a collective belonging. This implies referring back to a unique and an absolute figure while at the same time belonging to a group, being the Tunisian or the Muslim communities. In presenting the characteristic features of the political entity, the images allow a staging of the political actor by making him a subject of identification that creates relations (identity, emotional, iconic, informational and social) between the public - interpreting and the output authority that is the party. The latter’s production consists in the selection of a character trait, as part of the structured traits that is capable of explaining the global interpretive functioning. Any description-interpretation reflects operated choices, as different as they are, building a resulting image and that generates the appearance of different interpretation communities (convinced, critical or shared). They are thus codes serving as warning signals in their identification, relations markers, which in turn define the context of interpretation, reflected in the actions of the commenters, their electronic messages. These latter are almost all in favor of the two political actors. The quantitative analysis has shown that the groups of convinced interpreters write mostly praises and eulogies of their leader. Ultimately, the identity construction that is elaborated on Facebook allows the political leaders to be on the social networks in a constant interaction between "the self production" and the "interpretation of the other"

Abstract:
This thesis, in Communication and Information Sciences, raises the question of the internet personal data protection through the discourses analysis of four actors concerned with this subject: internet companies, authorities regulating, French population and national press. The objective is to understand how, through the discourses of each one of these actors, the question of the jamming of the spheres private and public about the Internet takes shape. It is a question which increases with the development of the Internet, in particular with the multiplication of the social digital network, which gives to the Internet users various opportunities to display their privacy. The multiplication of the interpersonal relationship devices connection is then accompanied by a contemporary dialectical between private and public spheres, not always controlled by concerned people. This interaction between private and public leads to a transfert of the border wich separates the two spheres and can involves some drifts on behalf of specialized companies, such Google and Facebook, toward the aggregation of personal data contents. Indeed, databases are central in the economic system of these companies and gained a commercial value. However, the commercial use as of these data is not necessarily known by the user and can be realized without its agreement, at least in an explicit way. This double questioning related to the jamming of the private and public spheres, i.e., firstly, the individual aspect where the Internet user is incited to reveal personal elements more and more, and, secondly, the related aspect with the selling of the data by the Internet companies, then generates the question of the individual freedom and data confidentiality. The regulating authorities, in France or in European Union, try to provide answers in order to protect the Internet users by setting up actions relating to the right to be forgotten or by prosecuting Google, for example, when the company does not conform to the laws in force on the territory concerned. The various angles of incidence as well as the diversity of the studied actors required the constitution of a multidimentional corpus in order to have a comparative approach of the different representations. This corpus includes texts registered like political discourses, regulating authorities speeches, companies of the Internet speeches, specifically Google and Facebook, or press speeches which occupy a meta-discursive position since they repeat speeches of the actors previously stated. It includes also oral speeches made up of talks especially recorded for this research with some persons taken randomly in the French population. A quantitative analysis of the discourses between 2010 and 2013, contemporary period with the thesis, permit to carry out a first sorting and to select only the most relevant speeches compared to our hypothesis. The qualitative analysis which followed was based on the theoretical framework previously elaborate in order to cross the representations of the actors in connection with the personal data and to highlight the various visions about this question
