Abstract:
Ethical issues presented by people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and mental health problems are usually addressed by reference to rights, autonomy, choice, and inclusion. These liberal valuesprovide certainty in the face of uncertain and complex situations. However, Deleuze argues that ethical vision expands more effectively by sitting with repetition: the most obvious repetition in ID is scandals. Inquiries into the abuse of people in the community as well as hospital patients suggest that denial of difficulty associated with ID encourages denial of the difficulty experienced by staff and parents. They also show how an essentially-contested dichotomy between medical and social models is played out, obscuring the significant emotional impact of ID on all parties not least on the individual’s own sense of personhood. We argue for a triple shift in ethical thinking: from individual achievements to enduring relationships; from negative judgment to affirmative living; and from moral rules to practical action.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the antievolutionists' move away from arguing with scientists and toward providing a scientific-sounding argument for mass consumption, usually in the guise of “intelligent design” (ID)—a tactic that allowed creationism to appeal to a broader audience. It first considers initiatives meant to make creationism attractive to the scientifically unlettered before discussing how proponents made individual rights and freedom of expression consistent themes in the fight to teach creationism in public schools. It then looks at two books that reenergized the fight against evolution and became central to the new offensive: Phillip E. Johnson's Darwin on Trial (1991) and Michael Behe's Darwin's Black Box (1996). It also describes the approaches adopted by creationists in the face of court rulings that rejected the teaching of creationism and ID in public schools. The chapter concludes with an assessment of ID advocates' “wedge strategy,” The Wedge Document, and the collection of papers titled Mere Creation: Science, Faith & Intelligent Design.

Abstract:
Electoral integrity faces many challenges in America. To understand these issues, the first part of this chapter starts by identifying the major concerns arising during and after the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, including issues about fraud, fakery, and meddling. To place these issues in a broader perspective and establish whether systematic evidence justifies these sorts of anxieties, the second part clarifies the core concept of electoral integrity as the key yardstick used to evaluate elections around the world and outlines the sequential steps in the electoral cycle, as well as how this concept can best be measured. The third part demonstrates that many countries face multiple challenges in meeting international standards of electoral integrity. Compared with similar affluent democracies, American contests perform particularly poorly. The analysis also uses expert and public evaluations to diagnose the electoral performance of all 50 U.S. states. To understand the reasons for these ratings in more depth, the fourth part outlines the chapters contained in the rest of the book. Contributors analyze evidence for a series of contemporary challenges facing American elections: the weaknesses of electoral laws, photo ID requirements for electoral registers, gerrymandering district boundaries, fake news, the lack of transparency, and the hodgepodge of inconsistent state regulations. The conclusion sets these challenges in comparative context and draws out the broader policy lessons for improving electoral integrity and thereby strengthening American democracy.

Abstract:
‘A case of obsessional neurosis’ discusses the case of a patient that Sigmund Freud first met in 1907. This particular and complicated patient was known as ‘The Rat Man’. The patient faced a desperate internal situation and was also incredulous, as his analysis unfolded, that he could be so encumbered by thoughts and driven to actions that defied rational sense. Freud went to extraordinary lengths to grasp the ideas behind his patient’s apparently nonsensical activities, to trace his psychic history, and to understand how obsessional doubts governed his life. Freud’s 1923 model of the mind and its three agencies—the superego, ego, and id—are also considered.
