Abstract:
Soul-Eye-Prow or Soul-Ferry-Prow?By Flemming Lundgreen-NielsenGrundtvig’s last completed poem .Old Enough I Now Have Grown. (1872) in stanza 3 presents a word that has not as of yet been deciphered with absolute certainty. At the first publication of the poem in 1880 by his son Svend it was given as »Sjæleøje-Stavnen« (literally: Soul-Eye-Prow), from 1964 on the reading .Sj.le-Færge-Stavnen. (literally: Soul-Ferry-Prow) has been suggested. The paper endeavours to settle this philological dispute. Firstly various renditions of the word through more than one century’s prints and reprints are registered, with specific regard to the (neglected) accuracy of spelling. Secondly the possible reading Soul-Eye- is verified as part of the metaphors of Danish Romanticism (found in B.S. Ingemann and in a hymn by Grundtvig), but due to lack of logical and metaphorical coherence the combination of the concrete word eye and the equally concrete word prow is rejected as against Grundtvig’s general practice in creating compounds.Contrarily Soul-Ferry- does make fine sense as part of an image of Charon’s boat and effortlessly combines with Prow. Thirdly the actual characters and strokes in the relevant line of Grundtvig’s manuscript are examined in minute details. The main problem is that Grundtvig because of failing eye-sight sometimes wrote words or letters with his steel pen without realising that he had run out of ink. The final result of this examination implies that the reading »Færge« (Ferry) seems the only possible one considering the number and kind of letters between the hyphens in the middle constituent of the trinomial compound. It is mentioned that in a scrutiny the small-scale photographic reproduction of the manuscript in Grundtvig’s Sang-Værk, vol. 6, 1964, cannot serve as a substitute for Grundtvig’s manuscript (in the Grundtvig Archive, The Royal Library, Copenhagen); neither can a contemporary handwritten copy.

Abstract:

Abstract:

During the period June 1991 to August 1993, 107 Argus-tracked drifters, drogued to 15 m depth, were released in the Greenland, Iceland, and Norwegian (GIN) Seas. The drifter movements revealed the strong and spatially confined current systems along the Iceland-Faeroe Front (IFF) and provided tracking of the Norwegian Atlantic Current and the general cyclonic gyre circulation in the GIN Sea. Of the 107 drifters released, 59 were selected for this study due to their proximity to the IFF. Tracked by the Argos system aboard the NOAA polar orbiters, the drifters provided accurate location and sea surface temperature (SST) data. Interpolated and low pass filtered position data were used to construct maps of drifter displacement and surface velocity field estimates and to study the correlation between drifter trajectories and satellite derived SST frontal features. Drifter SST data were compared to spatially and temporally coincident satellite retrieved SST data. The individual data sets were in good agreement with each other, resulting in a temperature difference of less than 1 deg C. Satellite imagery used to estimate surface currents through SST feature tracking provided a snapshot of the flow field over a short time scale. The drifters revealed a distinct frontal zone (IFF) where the topographically steered flow field approached velocities of 1 m/s. This relatively strong flow became unstable as it propagated eastward and an intense eddy field developed. What began as a stable demarcation between water masses became a flow field dominated by warm and cold instabilities and intrusions. This dynamic transformation occurred over relatively short time (less than 5 days) and distance (several hundred kilometers) scales, testament to the vigorous activity in the IFF. These Lagrangian drifter measurements compose the fg1$ac=gd

Abstract:
The paper discusses the choice and treatment of names in connection with the regional reform in Norway. The first stage of the reform was adapted in 2017, implying that the number of counties were to be reduced from 19 to 11, and the number of municipalities from 426 to 358. Following the change of government, a second reform was adapted in 2022 entailing a partial return to the former county structure with 15 counties. The choice of names of the new regions has been central to the political process and created a lot of debate. In the discussion about naming, reference was made to the Act on place names, which has rules about the spelling. Several new names have replaced traditional names such as Innlandet ‘the inner part of the country’ for the two former counties of Hedmark and Oppland. The consideration of inherited names has been set aside several times because local politicians have favored “advertising” names, such as the new county name Vestland and the municipal names Fjord and Færder. It is though likely that most of the new names will be accepted given time. But also, in the event of future changes in the county and municipal structure, there will be room for disagreement when it comes to the naming process.
