Abstract:
Within the considerable diversity of fish there are less-usual attributes of some species which facilitate survival in particular habitats or in response to selective pressures. The intense competition in warm, shallow water results in polymorphism in colour and size and complex social structure in some reef-fish and in different dentitions in cichlids with trophic specializations. Fish in the light-less deep sea are typically dark with large eyes and mouth; often they possess light-emitting photophores. In contrast, dark-dwelling cavefish lack melanin pigmentation, are usually pink, lack photophores and generally have poor eyesight. Adaptations to other limited habitats such as desert springs or temporary pools and water margins favour small fast-growing fish and air-breathing fish adapted to terrestrial habitats. The range of special adaptations is considerable, including burrowing fish, sound-producing fish, electric fish and even ‘flying’ fish. While parasitic fish are rare, special symbiotic relationships occur, as does hermaphroditism.

Abstract:
This chapter presents the details of the optical manipulation of electron spin states. It also addresses manifestations of the electron and nuclear spin dynamics in optical response of semiconductor nanostructures via spin-Faraday and -Kerr effects. Coupling of spins with light provides the most efficient method of nonmagnetic spin manipulation. The main aim of this chapter is to provide the theoretical grounds for optical spin injection, ultrafast spin control, and readout of spin states by means of circularly and linearly polarized light pulses. The Faraday and Kerr effects induced by the electron and nuclear spin polarization are analyzed both by means of a macroscopic, semi-phenomenological approach and by using the microscopic quantum mechanical model. Theoretical analysis is supported by experimental data.

Abstract:
This chapter explores four significant figures: Francis Bacon, Robert Boyle, Henry More and Anne Conway, each of whom represents an important and distinct aspect of the relationship between religion and science in the early modern period. It considers diverse approaches to questions such as whether matter is connected to spirit and the extent to which the workings and causes of physical phenomena are separate from those of metaphysical design and purpose, thus demonstrating the ways in which theological and scientific concerns are frequently intertwined during this period. However, this chapter examines not only competing modes of thought, but also the interconnections between them. It shows how theories about the relationship between religion and science arose out of a self-conscious response to other voices and were informed by exchange of ideas and open-ended debate.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines television news' reporting of the Selma campaign for voting rights that led directly to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Television cameras present on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Sunday March 7, 1965, were able to capture the beating, gassing, and brutalizing suffered by voting rights demonstrators as they attempted to march to Montgomery. The uproar generated by that footage generated more support, volunteers, and moral clout for the civil rights movement. This chapter considers how one news program, The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, presented the Selma campaign as an ongoing nightly news story, with particular emphasis on its coverage of the campaign's three martyrs: Jimmie Lee Jackson, Rev. James Reeb, and Viola Liuzzo. It also discusses the response of white Selmians in the “glaring light of television” and the commentary in the African American press regarding the television coverage of the campaign.

Villani, Susanna. The concept of solidarity within EU disaster response law. Bononia University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30682/alph13.

Full text
Abstract:
"Over the last years, the increase of emergencies occurring within the EU – or originating outside but having repercussions on it – has progressively brought to light the need to identify a common understanding of solidarity in the EU legal order. The book provides an overview of the socalled EU disaster response law and an appraisal of its peculiarity by assessing the substantial practical and theoretical role of solidarity in shaping the main legal instruments for disaster response occurring inside the Union. Special attention is devoted to the existing instruments providing financial and in-kind assistance in the event of a disaster and to the analysis of the recent initiatives concerning the provision of assistance to face the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The detailed analysis of the legal value of the solidarity clause established by Art. 222 TFEU then allows to evaluate the actual existence of solidarity obligations within EU disaster response law. Susanna Villani is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in EU Law at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Bologna. Currently, she is also Adjunct Professor of EU Internal Market and International Trade Law at the University of Bologna and member of various research teams in Italian and EU projects. In 2018, she received her PhD in EU Law at the University of Bologna in co-tutorship with the National Distance Learning University (UNED) in Spain."

Full text
Abstract:
Glucocorticoids (GCs) play a major role in orchestrating the complex physiological and behavioral reactions essential for the maintenance of homeostasis. These compounds enable the organism to prepare for, respond to, and cope with the acute demands of physical and emotional stressors and enable a faster recovery with passage of the threat. A timely and an appropriate GC release commensurate with stressor severity enables the body to properly contain stress responses so as to promote recovery by rapidly restoring homeostasis. Inadequate GC release following stress not only delays recovery by disrupting biological homeostasis but can also interfere with the processing or interpretation of stressful information that results in long-term disruptions in memory integration. A salient example of such an impaired post-traumatic process is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The findings from recent animal models and translational and clinical neuroendocrine studies summarized in this chapter provide insights shedding light on the apparently contradictory studies of the HPA-axis response to stress. Also included is a review of the basic facts about PTSD and biological data.

Abstract:
The Reconciliation Project, the attempt to show that justice is compatible with rational prudence, is evaluated in light of the classic challenges of Hobbes’ Foole, Plato’s Lydian Shepherd, and Hume’s Sensible Knave. Hobbes’ response to the Foole is justice-reciprocalist, emphasizing social sanctions, and is naturally interpreted in terms of folk theorem interactions of repeated games. Plato’s justice-Platonist response to the Shepherd, who has identity-concealing power, emphasizes goods allegedly inseparable from justice. A new Invisible Foole challenge is considered where an agent like the Foole who takes seriously only social sanctions acquires identity-concealment technology, and folk theorem responses are proposed for this challenge. The Invisible Foole challenge is similar to the most serious challenge, that of the Sensible Knave. The most compelling response to the Knave’s challenge combines elements of justice-reciprocalism and justice-Platonism.

Abstract:
The response to a speech made by Egypt’s President ʿAbd al-Fattāḥ al-Sīsī in January 2015 on the occasion of the Prophet Muḥammad’s birthday celebrations that asked for “religious revolution” demonstrates the continuing importance of examining discursive trends in Islamic thought. The strategies of a fifteenth-century scholar, al-Suyūṭī, who framed his own identity as a jurist in his legal writing casts light on how contemporary scholars are using his legacy to define who they are in a time of crisis and upheaval in modern Egypt. Understanding how Islamic thinkers justify their interpretation of Sharīʿa can inform a positive response to the geopolitical realities that the Muslim world faces today.

Abstract:
In response to the issues that came to light as a result of the financial crises, the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards called for the establishment of a professional body to promote better standards of behaviour in banking. This chapter discusses the Banking Standards Board (BSB) and the FICC Market Standards Board (FMSB). The BSB commenced work in January 2016 and, at the time of writing, has twenty-two member banks and building societies. The aim to the BSB is to set standards of behaviour and competence for banks and building societies, and to define metrics against which they could benchmark. The FMSB was set up in 2015 ‘as a private sector response to the conduct problems revealed in global wholesale Fixed Income Currencies and Commodities (FICC) markets after the financial crisis’.

Wise, Joseph E. Intimacy Versus Isolation. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190461508.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter charts the course and history of psychodynamic theoretical thinking as it relates to intimacy, both sexual and affiliative. Theory is considered in light of development, especially Erickson’s developmental stage of intimacy versus isolation. Clinical problems related to the injured patient, including post-traumatic symptoms, symptoms as a result of physical injury, and psychological response to physical injury, are discussed. A case example of a physically injured patient with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is considered in order to demonstrate how theory applies to clinical work. The case addresses intimacy in light of PTSD, physical injury, and psychological sequelae of injury.

Dancy, Jonathan. Practical Shape. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198805441.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers a theory of practical reasoning which is Aristotelian in spirit, since it maintains that one can reason to action in very much the same ways as those in which one can reason to belief. But the book gives its own, non-Aristotelian account of what those ways are; the practical syllogism hardly appears at all. Instead, there are accounts of reasons as considerations favouring a certain response, and of other ways in which considerations can be relevant to that response. Practical reasoning involves the attempt to see how the different relevant considerations come together to favour responding in a certain way (understood here as the attempt to determine the practical shape of the situation) and in acting in that way, in the light of those considerations. The only difference between this and theoretical reasoning is that in the latter, the relevant response is a belief rather than an action. The ‘therefore’ that is involved on both sides is a ‘for these reasons’ sort of therefore. The book also shows how the account offered can make good sense of moral reasoning and of the special forms of practical reasoning that are instrumental.

Wright, A. G. Photocathodes. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199565092.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Optical properties of photocathodes and their characterization in terms of absorptance, transparency, and reflectance in mixed dielectric media are presented. Photometric units and international standards are based on a specified white light source. The electromagnetic spectrum covers about a decade in wavelength and there is a relationship between photon energy and wavelength. Spectral responsivity can be specified in milliamps per watt or as quantum efficiency, η‎(λ‎), in terms of photoelectrons per incident photon. Empirical specifications, based on filtered light from a standard white light source give a measure of the photocathode response to blue, red, and infrared light. Bialkali photocathodes laid on a conducting substrate can operate at ultra-low temperatures approaching absolute zero, while others can survive operation at 200 °C. End window and side window photomultipliers are available in a range of diameters and photocathode types.

Ramírez, Paul. Enlightened Immunity. Stanford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.11126/stanford/9781503604339.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
A history of epidemics and disease prevention in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Mexico, Enlightened Immunity focuses on the multiethnic and multimedia production of medical knowledge in a time when the governance of healthy populations was central to the pursuits of absolutist monarchies. The book reconstructs the cultural, ritual, and political background of Mexico’s early experiments with childhood vaccines, tracing how the public health response to epidemic disease was thoroughly enmeshed with religion and the church, the spread of Enlightenment ideas about medicine and the body, and the customs and healing practices of indigenous villages. It was not only educated urban elites—doctors and men of science—whose response to outbreaks of disease mattered. Rather, the cast of protagonists crossed ethnic, gender, and class lines: local officials who decided if and how to execute plans that came from Mexico City, rural priests who influenced local practices, peasants and artisans who reckoned with the consequences of quarantine, and Indian tributaries who decided if they would hand their children to vaccinators. By following the public response to anticontagion measures and smallpox vaccine in colonial Mexico, Enlightened Immunity sheds light on fundamental questions about trust, uncertainty, and the role of religion in a period of medical discovery, innovation, and modernization.

Abstract:
Photon detectors transform information, carried by light, to an electrical analogue. Signals contain information on the time of occurrence and the intensity in terms of the number of photons involved. Photon rates may be constant with time, slowly varying, or transient in the form of pulses. The time response is specified in terms of some property of the pulse shape, such as its rise time, or it may be expressed in terms of bandwidth. Light detector applications fall into two categories: imaging and non-imaging; however, only the latter are considered. Detectors can be further divided into vacuum and solid state devices. Vacuum devices include photomultipliers (PMTs), microchannel plate PMTs (MCPPMTs), and hybrid devices in which a silicon device replaces the discrete dynode multiplier. PIN diodes, avalanche photodiodes (APDs), pixelated silicon PMTs (SiPMs), and charge-coupled devices (CCDs) are examples of solid state light detectors.
